Good spooks, interesting characters especially MC.
not too fond of the ML (there's no actual romance but it's implied) but honestly, they all are kids kinda. Mai the MC is 16 and Naru is 17, so immaturity is expected. I think it was really good for someone so arrogant as Naru to be yelled at for his pride by Mai more than once. And it makes their relationship different too, Mai likes Naru but never hesitates to speak her mind or what she thinks is right.

Mai MVP.

I wish the ending... more>> was better. While the plot threads were wrapped up, it felt a little too open about the characters and their next actions. Just feels like the epilogue could've been better. <<less

Hands down, this is probably the best LN I've ever read. It's a perfect blend of horror, disbelief, and drama.

Usually, in horror story, the author would insist that every case will be related to supernatural existence. However, Ghost Hunt takes into account the disbelief toward their existence and blend it into the story. Not all strange occurrence is caused by ghost, and at the same time, not all exorcists are fraud. The story is realistic & well written, all character are memorable, and several adaptation exist if you want something... more>> with more graphic (the novel is superior though). Romance is there, but is not the main focus of the story. Interaction between characters are entertaining. <<less

This series is a personal favorite - the anime, manga and novels. Each provides a subtly different reflection, based on the medium, but all three are excellent entertainment.

Based on the number of friends I've tried and failed in getting into Ghost Hunt, it's a bit of a niche genre, but it's such a delightful and well-written series filled with memorable characters and one of my favorite found families

    • Writing: I'll preface this by saying I read the manga first, and it was one of my favorite reads as a kid! It was such a unique read to me as a kid because it's definitely shoujo, but it's horror shoujo, with only a mild emphasis on romance. The horror aspect was never too much, and I still revisit some cases like Urado because they're that well-written and delightfully skin-crawling. Ono is a writer that pays such incredible attention to detail and reveals in both characters and cases are incredibly satisfying because of how well the groundwork was laid. The cases have a nice growth in scale as they go on, while still maintaining well grounded resolutions. I will say that my only point of preference for the manga over the novel is that the novel, as translated, doesn't often have the same tone indicators as the manga and anime do. So while a lot of the characters have questionable personalities and absolutely terrible first impressions, they all come across as that much more nasty and unnecessarily mean until they grow into a family. I could stick with it because of my familiarity with the materials but I could imagine new readers being put off. But I'm incredibly grateful for all the people who contributed to providing us with translations! There are many points where it's obvious it's a bit of a telephone situation (translating the chinese translation of the japanese originals into english) but they did a good job cross-referencing with the manga (which is pretty faithful!).
    • Characters: Ghost Hunt has a pretty wide cast of characters and every single one of them is delightful. Not necessarily in that they're good people, most of them are kinda a**holes on some level, but they're all given a strong personality and depth. Mai is a bit of an everygirl but she has her strengths and flaws and it's a joy to watch her grow from unwilling assistant in the first case to full blown investigator who solves the last case based on her own abilities and compassion. Also the SPR regulars are the most foundest of families to family and it's just delightful to watch them go from antagonistic and barely willing to work together to teasing coworkers who have each other's backs and who try and stay in contact even outside of work by the end. While Ghost Hunt occasionally feels its age when it comes to the way the women in this book are set up as romantic rivals, they actually also have really great and cute friendships and relationships with each other, which I love.
    • Romance: The romance in Ghost Hunt is pretty present throughout but it's almost always a secondary focus and a chance to breathe in between poltergeist attacks and what have you. It's tied in with a big twist that I'll put more on behind a spoiler but it had an ending that was rather polarizing back in the day due to some bittersweet elements. I've grown to appreciate it but I think if you're looking for a romance novel specifically, this isn't it.
      Spoiler

While I resented the way the confession went as a kid, as I've grown older I've really come to appreciate how lovingly this ending was handled even as it's bittersweet. I do think Mai loved both Gene and Naru, because for her there was no difference for so long. But it's also a rather young love. Not that it's less real but it wasn't super deep yet either. Naru's been and still is grieving his brother (and so is Mai to a lesser extent) and I do think Mai wanted an uncomplicated love and so it's not surprising at the end it doesn't go anywhere with Naru. If anything I loved that after Mai confesses, they have a long honest conversation, filled with teasing. It feels like a moment of real connection and friendship for them. Also I, like the author, do think they'll get together after they've had a chance to move on and mature, though it's a pity we won't ever get to see it (I say as I pull up a fanfic archive).

      [collapse]
tl;dr This is an excellent horror series with an emphasis on found family and some mild romance, and if you can't get into the novels you should definitely check out the manga or anime. I will kiss you on the mouth if you do.

I watched the anime series of this novel first, and I loved it. It was amazing to see the interaction between Mai and the ML. Some of the scene were very funny. The anime was amazing, so I like the novel as well.

Love this series, only thing I'm sad about is that I cant find the rest of volume 3. Seems all other volumes except for volume 3 have been completely translated. Can only find up to part 1 of chapter 4 for volume 3. Anyone know where I can find the rest of the chapters for Volume 3 so I can read the series in whole without needed the manga or anime to fill in the blanks?

This is a fun series about hunting ghosts. There is tension and excitement, but no one leaves the group due to their injuries. There are many characters, but they often come across as two-dimensional with the exception of the main ones. The major plot twist at the end was the most obvious conclusion, so it was a bit of a disappointment. If Mai used her brain a bit more, things would have been cleared up earlier. While I like the stories and the hauntings, the character depth and development are... more>> weak. The imagery is limited. The ending could do with more of an epilogue.

This is a nice series to read in one's free time, but it's not something that kept me sitting on the edge of my sit. <<less

It had been a long time since I first read this story. I remember that a few cases from this story really crept me out, even more so when I saw it in a manga/anime version. The ending felt a bit bittersweet for me though and I couldn't help but to feel sad for our MC. But aside from that, I really like this story.
