I read the raws some time ago and my heart still feels sad when I think about this story. Li Chengyin and Xiaofeng, a pair of star-crossed lovers. When they first met, their love blossomed just like any other couple's. There was happiness, there was sadness, they quarreled and they fought but they were in love. Then the truth was revealed and everything turned to ashes.

Nothing in this story is as it seems. All the minor details and plot and politics that you see in the beginning are actually pieces... more>> of the puzzle. Li Chengyin is not as simple as he seems. Xiaofeng appears naive, but once she remembers all that she forgets, the heaviness that weighs upon her makes you wish for her to return to her days of naivety and innocence, when she was just a carefree person.

So many tears were shed at the ending, but I understand why it had to happen the way it did. We have to live with the consequences of our decisions, and Li Chengyin and Xiaofeng's story was never meant to have a happy ending... <<less

This is a top tier tragedy novel in my opinion.

Personally I am really glad to have finished this novel.

If you are looking for a tearjerker, this is a good choice.

With that being said, and some what unfortunately, all of the payoff is at the end of the novel, literally the last 2-5 chapter + epilogue or so.

The entire novel to structured to setup the ending. In fact most of the novel isn't all that great by itself, it's pretty bland actually. Definitely not worth reading if you are not willing to stick it to the end.

The novel can pretty much be divided into 3 part, the present, the past and the conclusion. The first part is relatively lighthearted and calm, with no major conflicts. The second part more serious and emotional. These two part actually seems like 2 different novels, and to be honest, at the time of reading, pretty random.

However, all of these end up setting up the conclusion really well if you could believe. I definitely couldn't help but cry as the novel was reaching the end. It's remembering everything that happen in the novel, no matter how random and meaningless they were at the time, and the epiphany when you realized how each of those events meant for the characters that really delivered for the story.

Personally this kind of progression for a tragedy novel is not a bad choice. Although the early parts of the novel really doesn't deliver very much from an emotion stand point, there nothing like that sudden unexpected punch in the gut.

In summary, read it if you like tragedy and can stick through a reasonably long novel. Else if you are expecting a satisfying experience throughout, this is not worth it.

Also, there is only ever one MC. This much is pretty clear fairly obvious after the initial meeting, and the story doesn't attempt to hide this.

The story tags should just be tragedy, angst and heart wrenching. This novel starts out slow but it builds up for the climax, which honestly is when the tears come. Watching XF love a man so deeply not just once but twice as an innocent woman who just wants to find her true love to finding the dark secrets of her past breaks my heart. Their love was never meant to be and I'm glad the ending turned out the way it did. No matter his reasons, he did not... more>> deserve her love and affections. <<less

I liked it more than I thought I would. I truly the type to steer away from tragedy and started this because I didn't read the tags carefully. I wavered from the first sign of tragedy but persisted when I saw the chapters are short.

It isn't anything new, but the story telling is quite good and can draw your emotions into it. It really is the story that told you, everything happening in Imperial Palace, is something that happened under the control of the men of the Imperial family. The... more>> tragedy happened when you exceeding your usefullness or as a woman tried to leave the golden cage without permission from 'him'.

Even in extra, A'Mu also schemed to get SLN bethrothed to him. Thankfully though, A'Mu was taught the lesson of regret by Li Cheng Yin. So the two story ended up happy after waiting 10 patient years as A'Mu the man used gentle and soft approach.

I felt satisfied with how the author wrote the punishment for the ruthless yet decisive ML. And what is more satisfying is how the FL is written. Even when she choose such ending, it isn't the despair against fate or love, the like. But because she is aware, not everything can be overcome simply by "the power of love". Since ML is ruthless enough still wanting to play pretent innocence after all the blood debts, then she can only be a bloody flower that bloom with satisfied smile for him to see and remember all his life.

But it also makes reader felt, such satisfying revenge... but somehow still unresigned and wanted a happy ending. It really somehow makes you feel empty. Probably this is what they said "while seeking revenge, dig two graves, one for yourself". Sigh. <<less

I personally did not finish this novel, but know enough to cry about it. The writer sets it up well for a heart breaking ending.

Even though they both forgot each other due to the fall in the river of forgetfulness, they come to love each other again after 3 years of marriage. Little scenes, where the author writes about their interactions as a marriend couple makes one think that hey, maybe it wont end so bad after all, but I was so wrong. From their first kiss during their marriage, the scene made the novel to be so light. The ending, however, was just so tradgic. She dies by stabbing herself, thus renduring her to forget him forever, which she's always wanted.

Impressions as of Ch. 9. Rated 3.5, rounded down to 3.

When the story opens, the MC is already married and became the crown princess. It was a political marriage, she was given as tribute from a defeated country. Her husband the crown prince did not want the marriage as well, as he already had a favored concubine. The MC did not mind this, as it meant she had free time to sneak out with her trusty female bodyguard to disguise as commoners and to gallivant.

Being from a foreign, 'barbarian' country,... more>> the MC and her bodyguard were perplexed at the behavior of people in their new home. A reader might find their naivety interesting or exasperating, as they take everything at face value. Fans of palace dramas seeking to find an intelligent MC rebuffing the words and schemes of others will be disappointed here, at least initially; as the MC simply assumed every spoken word and action as true. This is amply demonstrated in the drowning episode.

Other than the palace intrigue and loveless marriage, there is also a mystery as a powerful wuxia character claims to have exchanged vows with the MC, of which the MC had no memory of. It may be a case of mistaken identity.

It has to be noted that the first translator (Suteki da ne) collaborated with another translator on the first four chapters but dropped the series. The translating collaborator was mentioned to be indifferent to the male characters and I have to say only one seemed suitable as a male lead, that being the general. The others seemed deeply flawed: the crown prince being childish and the wuxia man seemed possessive and not really listening to what the MC says. Of course, there might be others introduced or their personality change, but readers should bear in mind the story is only 42 chapters long with an epilogue according to the new translator. <<less

This is so sad when you remember what they were like in the past, young and carefree.

All the war with the drama within the royal palace changed them so much that they no longer trust each other.

Overall this is a beautiful tragic story between the two lovers who were never meant to have a happy ending.

Prepare for the Onion chopping ninjas!!

Be ready with a box of tissue when you read the book or watch the series (Goodbye my Princess). I watched the series first and then read the book and it didn't take away the joy of reading the book. The book is better in a way because the story unfolds in front of you while in the series you see it in the linear narration. In a way, it is like Eternal Love where the theme (the protagonist losing memory) is quite the same and both the book and... more>> the series follow the same pattern. The books start in the middle in a way while the series starts from the beginning.

As for the story, it is one of the saddest I have read. Don't know how much I have cried (the children were sort of alarmed seeing me cry) when I read or watch certain episodes. As for the characters, the MC is the most genuine person in the book while the ML is ruthless and power-hungry. The series sort of gives an indication of why he did what he did in regards to the royal family, but the book does not do so and hence the ML comes out to be more ruthless. So I am happy in a way that he doesn't get to reconcile with the MC because he doesn't deserve her. And so is the SML he also doesn't deserve her. Though he dies for her at that time the death is as pointless as pushing someone in a well and then dying while trying to pull her out!

Spoiler

It is fitting the way she dies in the book, with her best friend because she was the only person who was always faithful and by her side. Another person who truly loved the MC is the head maid and others just used her all her life.

At first I didn’t notice that it was a tragedy novel.

But I have to say that I am glad that it was one. If the FL lived happily ever after with the man who killed her family, I would have been very disappointed.

The story and ending both are satisfactory ❤️❤️

I until the very end, still wished for some sort of happy ending. Despite the evidence in every line, I still, I still waited with baited breathe for redemption, salvation and sweet tears.

It’s a complete tragedy but the ML deserved the ending. I wished he would have lived even more miserably afterwards. I was so sad for the FL, hopefully she’ll have a rebirth or transmigration story where she can experience real love and happiness.

Spoiler

This is a TRAGEDY. I unluckily (or luckily) did not see it so I was crying at the end when I was reading it.

Summary underneath

It is really sad about a girl who saw her husband massacre her family and jumped down into the river of forgetfulness I think so that she could forget her husband and everything which happened in the past. After trivial matters, she was somehow crown princess and she basically follows her own path as the crown prince was in love with a concubine. The situation got out of hand that her friend had came and realises she forgot everything. She falls in love with the prince but there was a situation when she was kidnapped and she sacrifices herself for the crown prince and emperor. She realises the person was her friend (technically now allies) and they go to the festival. She was heartbroken as now, she was kidnapped and the crown prince who was now a bit closer to her had just went to the festival she had never had a chance to experience with his lover. Then fighting, blah, blah and she got her memories back. The memory is wayyy too long but basically she remembers the guy who killed many ppl and used her for his political gains, but also loved her. The guy was also the crown prince btw.

The beginning was mild, like how most arranged marriage romance novel would start with hatred, jealousy and the inevitable realisation that they are slowly falling for each other.

But there’s a twist to it. A dark and shitty past. Results in a romance tragedy as what this novel is labelled as. I started off with without looking much into the description and labels, thinking it was so predictable which ends up smacking myself in the face with that dark past and endless stream of tear nearing the end.

It’s a good read,... more>> bear in mind the good stuff comes after the middle of the novel. <<less

Oddly enough, I never cried for the story of LCY and XF. Shed a few tears but felt more anger and disappointment along the way, not because of the story but because of LCY's character. He's definitely ruthless, vicious and cold hearted. How he mercilessly killed XF's people to attain his goal especially

killing XF's cat, Xiao Xue due to jealousy

that sealed the deal for me. Felt no remorse for him towards the end. Every pain he felt after XF's death and regret, he deserved it all.

However, the story that made me sob like a baby was

though it ended sweetly, it left me crying maybe because at the back of my mind this could have been XF and LCY had they stayed as XF and GXW, without any imperial obligation, revenge to seek and bloodshed. Just pure, sweet love between the two of them. <<less

I've never read an ML as ruthless as him. Fu Shenxing who?

On the surface, it looks like Xiaofeng is the most pitiful but when you look into it, and read the side stories, you realise no, every woman was pitiful; whether it was a mother, wife, lover, nobody was spared from the claws of their men.

What would you do of a love that hurts you? A love whose scent is sweet to you but poison to everyone you cherish, a love that entraps you in a golden cage, a love... more>> that forces you to direct the blade to your throat.

I came here after hating the ML in the drama, and being heartbroken by their tragedy. Little did I know that the guy here and other were a world apart in their ruthlessness.

Their sweet moments were sweet, honey-like, but at what cost? The debts and cruelty in between them could not be compensated. Their fate was tragic and their tragedy was fate, too.

I highly recommend this for tragedy-suckers like me. If you don't cry by the end, you will definitely in the side stories. <<less

I’m not going to read the novel cause the drama is already hard enough as it is for me. Someone can try to convince me, but I’ll never read this angst and tragic novel. I cried hella hard when I watched the drama. I’m just gonna say... poor MC. That’s all I can say. Poor MC. Nothing else. ML... deserves that ending that he got. A man can be ambitious, but when you give up everything for ambition, expect no one to be there waiting for you. Even if he... more>> tries to redeem himself, he’ll never be able to redeem himself. At least that’s what it is for me.

Even though I won’t read it, I’ll give it a 5 star because I loved the drama. I’ll never watch it again, but it was a great drama that stuck with me.

Warning: Only read this novel if you want a lot of angst and tragedy.

Spoiler

MC dies in the end. She commits su*cide to end a war since she was the reason why the war started. Her body gets buried in her homeland like how she wanted and ML retires from the throne at old age to search for MC because he believes that she’s not dead, she’s just waiting for him. But yeah... She’s dead dead. 🤷‍♀️
