Highly enjoyable gateway xianxia series. All I can really say it is simple fun and that readers should treat it as such. The villains are not very smart for the most part and neither is the MC, but if you are looking for the kind of novel where the MC goes through a bunch of training arcs and powers up to the point of being able to contend with senior generation members who are two whole realms higher than him, then this it the one. If you are looking for... more>> the kind of main character who fits the "hero" quality of olden times (bold, brazen, womanizing), then this is the one.

Only real fault to this series is that the author loves to drag certain events around along with lots of repetition throughout the story. What could have been accomplished in a few chapters ends up taking an additional 20, and so on. However, this is an issue that most xianxia in general have.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this if you just want to read something to help kill some time. However, don't expect a masterpiece boasting complex and real characters with an engaging plot. It's just simple fun. <<less

My enjoyment of this novel slowly but steadily decreases as time goes by but I still like it. One thing this author does very well is building hype. He is very good at pumping up the audience with the cool actions of his MC. The fight scenes are done very well as they are easily mentally envisioned and create some cool imagery. This novel has some of the best combat move names out of all the CN I read. I have to give props to the translator for bringing out... more>> how cool they are. The MC in an unrepentant chauvinist badass who will take advantage of a pretty woman in heatbeat. He goes about life with the attitude that the pretty women in front if him is the most important pretty women in the world and should be treated as such (never mind the other peerless beauties in his stable, they are currently out of view). If the Peerless beauty is s*upid and falls for his tricks, well, that's their own fault really.

He is also a subscriber of the idea that you brutally deal with a situation you don't like so that in the future no one tries that sh*t again (until you go into a new zone). This means he can do some heavy handed things. He is also arrogant, with all the problems and funny moments that brings about.

The story has proven it is very good at doing tournament arcs but I'm not sure if it can do anything else because frankly it hasn't. All the plot in between tournament arcs just feeling like setup for the next one if I'm honest. The cultivation system is pretty clear and the abilities available can be imaginative. The MC, of course, regularly comes in and messes up their nice system by being broken and jumping levels like it ain't no thing using his collection of cheats. His immunities also lead to many cool moments of collective jaw dropping. The reaction chapter in this novel are glorious.

As I said earlier the novel is good at building hype, but each hype peak gets a little lower each time for me. The peaks are too similar. <<less

The writing is tepid, bogged down by overwrought descriptions, and in general the novel moves extremely slowly. While there are plenty of very satisfying scenes, the general attitude of the MC makes it hard to be invested in his success since he's such an unlikeable prick. That and the really shitty contrived harem kind of take away from things.
Spoiler

Also having an all powerful being in the background to save your ass any time there's real danger destroys any hope of dramatic tension.

What I can say about this novel? At first I was like “mh, the name sound cool but I’m sure it’s not a good novel like MGA or TDG and many many other novels”..I started reading at 8 pm and finished reading 300 chapters at 6 am, once I started I couldn’t finish anymore! It’s the best novel I’ve ever read! The MC is the most smart badass of all the MCs, he is funny and epic at the same time, the plot is ingenious. It’s a good story, I... more>> can’t help but shiver when the MC does something amazing, he makes the impossible possible and that’s just epic. <<less

It has some great parts, but I dislike the harem. His feelings for the different females now feels fake in a sense. Some parts also get very childish and for someone who was an adult in his other life, he sure doesn’t show it.

One of the best novel ever existed.

I hope it never ends. There’s some comedy, action, romance, and of course revenge. This is my favorite novel to read right now. Yup, I like it better than coiling dragon.

You should read this if you’re into Wuxia/Xianxia.

Really a 2.5/5 rounded up. The actions by MC and the way they are handled lead to this being a very dividing novel.

After reading this, there is a lot to discuss. This novel may be your first cultivation novel in English and it really fits the tropes of what you should expect. Before I go into that I want to put a warning in for people who are new, or read something from a better writer, to this genre about this specific novel:

Acts MC commits: R*pe multiple times in great... more>> detail (starts early, goes away, then comes back with a vengeance, Becomes mu*derHobo (the I want to kill everyone trust no one type), ens*avement of enemy, general concept of forgetting his harem, and the typical dark edgy MC MARs writing you've seen before. I've missed some, but he seriously does some really crap things normalized in the cultivation world by this writer.

In general MC goes from average to good, bad, decent for a long time, very very very bad, redemption/salvation/regret/ possible happiness as of current chapters. Who knows?

MC: 2/5 - really for reasons above, he is better early on and smarter, but never develops to be better later and in general becomes worse as a person and just becomes Edgelord, ruler of all things, hater of everything. I redeem his early chapters so he is not a 1.

Anyways moving on characters:

1/5: Just no. It's cultivation, some slight drama that's solved over time. More intricate in the later stages, but still very shallow. I'd give it a 0/5 however some characters are ok specifically, Mu Xuanyin.

The story: 2/5

Has a formula: if you don't like the start, you won't like the ending. (100 chapters worth give or take)

Follows all cultivation novel tropes: 1st marriage doesn't work out, lack of ability to cultivate, reincarnated with master knowledge to fix anything bad early on (plot armor), harems of enemies/daughters of enemies/ surprise family connections and relations to boost ego, 1 dimensional enemies (a couple exceptions, extremely rare) of the beat you up and somehow MC is badass enough to overcome multiple levels and various powers that can crush him, but won't.

I think most people can think the first 150 or so chapters are fine for cultivate, progress, meet harem. Linear development, unique cultivation, cultivation increase, typical enemies, typical girls, plot armor. Then around that time comes.... MC being bad guy 1st time with the trope R*pe to save a life, though not nearly as bad as later.

IFFFFFFF you can't stand this... DO NOT READ MORE.

  • As a side note if you do keep reading you have ~1k chapters before the very very bad MC comes in.
Well do you expect the MC to grow, to do something more, then you'd be.... WRONG. He won't! He has developed as much as possible at the beginning and all further actions reflect these chapters, all enemies reflect it, all conflicts reflect it, just make the scale bigger. His harem gets bigger, more beautiful, most are forgotten for many many many chapters and they won't impact much.

  • Later in the story probably because most haven't had a direct impact he makes the harem more involved behind the scenes. They do things to help, MC doesn't know as he only hates everyone int he realm at that point. MC mu*derhobo harem is more involved than almost all harem members he met before.
5/5 transaltion/grammar:

Alyschu on WuxiaWorld has been great at translating it and making it good for English readers. I'd read it on a different site due to the monetization they've done and assuming you're not rich enough to buy most of the story. Pay/free view with their tokens starts at Chapter 50.... it's like paying a couple hundred to read it.... a story that was mostly free before this started. OFC you can subscribing monthly to it. Just don't waste your money and do a google search for most if not all of it. Then support the translator if you want.

That concludes this review. I think I hit most points people dislike or like, there are several novels that do cultivation in the same style with a much more neutral to good MC who is not Edgelord. I'd recommend I Eat Tomatoes, novels like Stellar Transformations (IMO a big one that kicked off many themes you'll see in wuxia/ xianxia novels today) that stays away from Edgelord and milking of money MARS GRAVITY does.

If anyone is curious, I picked this up probably a few years ago, when each chapter really meant something, but after certain MC actions in later chapters I typically will skim. You won't miss much if you do it too as actually story driven plot is pretty minor. <<less

As of chapter 1900, I fell like I'm obligated to review this.

Its pretty frickin good.

The story can be separated into three main arcs: the BPS arc, God Realm arc (which is just about to finish in a few chapters), and whatever is coming up.

The general problem with a lot of these cultivation novels is that arcs repeat where the MC realizes that he is just a frog in the well at the beginning of each arc. While you can say the same thing happens here, there's a pretty stark contrast... more>> between the two available arcs. I'm not very good at explaining myself but with the exception of the conclusions, the arcs follow a pretty independent progression path where not a whole lot of the same things happen (Well tourneys are a thing but I'm not gonna count that cause they're not very long).

There are parts where things do get stale and it gets increasingly obvious that the author is running out of ideas, especially
Spoiler

initial bit where the MC turns dark

. The author did take a hiatus during that period when the story started to become bland and got his sh*t together. He came back and delivered the last few hundred chapters perfectly.

I am very much looking forward to what this final arc has in store. A large number of unexplained things were explained in the God Realm arc but just as many new holes were made. I have very high expectations that Mars will be able to wrap up this almost decade long story very nicely. <<less

Might seem like your typical cultivation novel with harem. And to a certain extend, it is. However the reason im giving 5 stars is because last 500 chapters or so have been absolutely amazing. You can feel the emotions. Everyday check for a new chapter and never disappoints.

I'm giving it two stars because two of my friends really like this story. But I can't wrap my head around a writing sooooo redundant. Most of the time, you spend five unnecesarily long chapters to make the story advance half a step. The situations are repetitive as the word gets. Really, you need to have the patience of budha to actually read the whole thing. And You don't even get to like any of the characters except your as*hole MC, beacause they keep coming and going. And sure, SOME... more>> of them actually appear again, but its so far appart that you already forgot about them. <<less

It was fine, until the fillers come in.

Reading those endless battles of words was unbearable, author keeps repeating the things over and over for 30+ chapters, I skipped to the obvoius conclusion, and, surprise-surprise, he keeps doing the same crap. And its not the first time, when he delay the obvious conclusion for tens of annoying chapters. No logic, nothing, but pure random bullsh*t discussions, and obvious tournament, when MC saves the day.

I read about 600~700 chapters of this about a year ago, before dropping it. I was recently on the hunt for something new and interesting to read, when I saw this again and starting from the beginning for nostalgia purposes. After 200 chapters, I remembered why I dropped it.

I'm about as long-winded and expository as the background Chinese NPCs I like complaining about so much, so I left a little summary at the bottom detailing my thoughts, if you don't wanna read paragraphs and paragraphs of my opinions.

This... more>> novel has lots of good points, but they are all completely over-powered by the bad and the boring to the point that everything levels out at exceedingly mediocre. The author ends up tripping over all his successes and falling into every cliche of the genre.

First, the language and structure. The translation, as expected of WuxiaWorld, is exceptional and professional, but the TL just had bad material to work with. While they can be interesting to start with, the paragraphs and paragraphs of shocked descriptions of things we've seen dozens of times before (with a healthy dose of "striking", "heaven-defying" and "god-like") are just insufferable. Characters are exceedingly long-winded and redundant, especially when decrying the MC's foolishness or when proclaiming their own after they get b*tch-slapped by his OP plot armor. Admittedly, this can be entertaining in small doses, so if you're going to read this novel, I'd recommend taking it piece by piece.

Mainly because it just doesn't stop. This is, perhaps, the worst and most prevalent cliche of all within Chinese martial arts novels. The story is retold time and time again, just on a whole new scale, with new carbon-copies of each and every character for the MC to befriend/help/woo/cut down to size/kill like the disposable tr*sh they were written to be. And with the extreme power creep this novel has, due to the short time limit the MC has, there is almost no time between each arc, with each taking only a couple weeks at most.

This is also unfortunate because it leaves much too little time for the MC's best over-all trait: black bellied scheming. While I'd never say he's on the level of AWE's Bai Xiaochun, Yun Che is clever and shameless, and most of the (actual) comedy in this series comes from his tricksy little plots he sets up before hand. During this re-reading, my favorite part was when he messed with the Xiao Branch Sect. Very funny. Maybe he does in the later half of the book, but I think the author would do well to put more of these scenes in.

Other parts of his character are less stellar, and also much less concrete. The basic principle for his morality is "treat me with respect, and I will return it tenfold, treat me maliciously, and I will return it one hundred fold" (not an exact quote), but he has a bad habit of treating the people he cares about really badly and then never learning his lesson. I suspect this is mostly because it allows him (time and time again) to act as the savior of whatever damsel he himself has put in distress.

Spoiler

Early examples include: Getting his past-life waifu killed and being really sorry, setting a mol*ster on his first wife so she could deal with him for her and paying her back by powering her up with his magic doctor healing powers, almost getting his loli master killed from saving him from a giant dragon he messed with and being really sorry, letting his princess waifu (v1.0) almost starve to death and get r*ped by bandits so he would have time to learn a new OP skillz and being really sorry, and the list goes on...

[collapse]

This form of morality mostly seems like a justification for the MC to torture and mu*der clans for offending him and his friends. He has no compunction whatsoever about killing lots of innocent people for being related to the people who (kind of?) deserve it.

He also has OP plot armor that takes the form sudden, inexplicable power surges when bad guys need to get their faces slapped, legacies and powerups waiting for the fated and wonderful Yun Che to show up, and of course his master, Jasmine, who essentially serves as a reservoir of OP skillz and get-out-of-deadly-situation-free cards. Let's move on to the final point: the girls.

Oh, the girls! Jade-like skin, clear eyes like pools of spring water, and personalities so thin they get blown away by Yun Che's hot, steamy breath after a shirtless work-out. The only one with real depth seems to be Jasmine, and that's because she's there for the long haul, and she serves as the obligatory tsundere. While most of them should be strong, independent women that don't need no mans, they all end up being the same kind of naive, innocent, deer-in-the-headlights-type-girl when the MC shows up. They all also conveniently desperately need the MC to solve their problems for them, despite mostly being A) stronger than him and B) largely princesses. It's amazing how the MC's presence will strip away anything that might ruin his chances at a suspension bridge effect like royal bodyguards (nope), or life-saving items (what're those? are they edible?).

For the most part, romance in this series amounts to a girl being in some kind of physical/emotional distress (readers, take note: this is often Yun Che's fault), giving the MC the chance to save them and show off how he's a lover, not a fighter, and will also brutally mu*der anyone who touches a hair on your silky head. It is kinda funny when he acknowledges that he wouldn't give a sh*t about them if they were ugly, but it doesn't make me like him anymore.

Summary

    • Really excellent translation quality. Would be 5 starts if I was only rating that.
    • Yun Che's scheming ways can be pretty silly, when he gets a chance to show them off.
    • Extreme amounts of exposition about stuff we see over and over again.
    • Just... too much face slapping. Just too much. It's upsetting when 90 percent of all established characters were made just to be face-slapped.
    • Another 9 percent is the beautiful girls, and they're just as paper-thin. Romance is extremely lacking if what you want is meaningful connections and chemistry past s*xual attraction.
Conclusion:

Would not recommend. This book could be retitled "Yun Che's Wish Fulfillment Diary". If you want a Russian Roullette of face slapping and cringy seductions, give it a try, but eventually one of the chambers will be the silver bullet that kills your interest in the series. <<less

Rated 3 stars for an average score. It's a loong story so I'd recommend giving it a try to see if you like it, put it down for a while when interest starts waning. You can always return to it later without really missing too much if you've forgotten something.

This story has all of the common cliches where the protagonist powers up in an exponential manner, cyclically going through periods where he goes from the underdog to monarch but ends up provoking an even higher power becaous of his self... more>> entitled attitude and arrogance which returns him back to being the underdog again, hence restarting the cycle.

Collecting girls is no different. Encountering a heaven shaking beauty, concurring her through some convenient outside circumstances (all from ranged marriages to f***-or die situations) that that doesn't make MC look like a utter beast. Then encountering an even more heaven shattering beauty an the cycle restarts. Every girl pritteir than the last, all of them virg*ns and and varying from cold beauties to busty women to... prepubescent girls? uh... sorry, lolies. Furthermore MC seems only capable of rough s*x ripping his women's clothes on a regular basis and commencing a marathon make out afterwards and is definitely not above r*pe in spite of or should I say because of his convenient or sense of justice (notice my oozing contempt).

Its the kind of novels that have inspired countless others transmigration stories where the MC encounters the protagonists invincible plot Armour and all the women's IQ drop as they fall in love with.

But if it really were that bad I wouldn't have given it 3*. The MC does seem to have a measure of self awareness and some of his women will point out everything I said above, his skirt chasing, his arrogance, selfishness and s*upidity. Some of the personalizes of the women are also well developed and as a woman I sometimes find myself relating some of the women. Some of the tragedy is really heart wrenching, and situations around discrimination and justice/injustice thought provoking. These elements are what manage to redeem this story.

That said it is a loooong read. I dropped it for a long time becuse it felt repetitive but felt recently like a change in lecture and picked it up from where I left off. Although I didn't remember all of the details I didn't fell like I missed anything and what was relevant in past plot arcs is rexplained ending up in a surprisingly pleasent experience. <<less

One of the best xianxia novels that i've read, Sure it can be repetitive but it's done so well that it's not just "repetitive" with no sense or reason,

Really good world building that keeps you wondering what will happen especially on parts when he is so down low where you feel like its hopeless which makes the MC a bit more realistic no matter hot blooded he is which makes you wonder what action he'll do next whether it's gonna be selfish or reasonable- Especially on the later parts... more>> of the story where he finally realizes how important one of his ' plot armor ' really is especially after it disappears. <<less

One of the best Xianxia I have ever read. The MC actually has PERSONALITY unlike many other xianxia mcs. Unlike novels like MW where the MCs wouldn’t even feel any sort of temptations regardless if it was women or wealth YC is much more human. He has his wins and loses and isn’t invincible like most mcs. The bad guys tend to be your standard Chinese bad guys, but at the very least we don’t have to hear the same phrases and dialogue out of every single villain that gets... more>> super repetitive. The side characters (his wives/girls mainly) are well developed. There is a lot of story and emotion tying them to the MC and the plot and they are not thrown in randomly. While there are many similarities between other xianxia novels, this one generally diverges from the standard. If you are looking for Something a little different then Against the Gods is for you. If you are looking for a standard martial arts addicted story with no other driving forces then ATG is not for you. <<less

After leaving this novel for a year (I am too tired to wait 1 chapter a day... it's too annoying and boring), at the end lower realm saga, I am back and now am at the 1220 chapter.

So far so good. Above all, I love MC with HAREM... ahahahahaah. Just love it.

The main plot is quite consistent... right from the start, there is already thread connecting... so you cannot do nothing but to expect what comes next, when and how it will happen. As for the sub plots, sometimes its... more>> development is poor, however one can still bear it. A bit wordy sometimes, too much words were waste just to say one or few things... often times repetitive too... I mean, one the same thing is said two times, one from narrators point of vies while the other from the character (s) point of view. I have an impressione that the author is doing this just to make the chapter longer. and it happens quite often. Thus, there were times during my reading that I just focus on dialogues since they already contain the main idea.

So far, the chapters I likes the most are 1079-1081, regarding the Royal Wood Spirit... ahhh, I cried a lot in their...

While the most annoying chapter I met so far is 1171. The MC is just too annoying...

There are more things coming to expect. For the reader to enjoy this novel is first one must remove any prejudices, just let yourself immerge into the immaginary world of the novel itself... no more no less.

Well... if you are not convinced still, why not give it a shot... who knows...

All in All, this novel is so far so goooooooooodddddd <<less

i haven't read much of it, but the author's writing style is the exact style I'm trying to avoid.

MC is a underdog, from a underdog family, in a underdog city in a underdog country. Every character acts like you would expect in a story without depth, with arrogant young masters and every relevant female character is "jade-like". Things seem to happen just to give the MC a enemy and MC isn't ever left in peace. When the novel started with everyone looking down on MC I was waiting for him... more>> to start a medicine selling business and take over the family from the bottom step by step, of course that isn't what happened.

Spoiler

arrogant young master comes in and get's him kicked out of the family while trying to steal his wife and side chick (who are both jade-like), he doesn't succeed because the wife has contacts stronger than the young master, but MC is still kicked out and the wife's family doesn't take him in, it's not that they refused for some reason, the author didn't even seem to consider it.

[collapse]

Don't get me wrong, if you're looking for chinese cultivation stories, this kind of thing is most likely what you're looking for, but I'm looking for something with a little bit more depth so I have to give it 2 stars, if it could grab my attention more after the first arc i'd give it 3 stars, but
Spoiler

the second arc, that starts on c39, starts off introducing a new arrogant young master. Yeah, no thanks, I'm out.

[collapse]
I don't know if the author is going somewhere interesting with that but the fact that I don't have the interest and patience to continue reading tells me that this novel just isn't for me.

From what i've read, this story is one of those eternal revenge stories, where MC is wronged, gets stronger and then takes revenge and then has to go somewhere else for some reason outside of his control, and then is wronged again and so on. I heard it gets better after 150 chapters, but I honestly doubt the author would change his writing style to one that suits my tastes. <<less

Love the novel. Well thought character building, and plot. The only thing that always annoy me is the writer looks like someone who doesn't know or even imagine length measurement. Seems like he doesn't know how to differentiate KM and meters. Hah... When I try to imagine the fights or something that the writer wrote to show lenght or big of something. It's really exaggerated too far beyond imagination. Haaahhh.... thats the only thing that annoyed me so much and make my head headache.
