The Second Coming of Gluttony

Description

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

I was initially debating whether to try this book or not. For months I had it on my reading list and I finally said hey why not, there must be a reason almost 1000 people gave it a 5. I wholeheartedly agree that this novel is a 5, the author has some of the best dialouge and plot progression I have seen in a long time. If I were to describe the book in one word it would be smooth. Everything flows into each other and nothing feels choppy or... more>> forced when I read. The chapters flow into each other in such a way that I can retrace the entire story so far and not get confused or lost. I also heard that the quality does not drop even into the 500 chapter mark. If you are looking whether or not to read this I would tell you yes. <<less

It seems like a lot of people like this novel a lot seeing the rating and reviews. As for me though, I can't bring myself to read pass 3rd chapter. MC one of most important elements for any novel. Here, the author went out of his way to describe him as an absolute scumbag, probably for the sake of giving him a redemption plotline later on... But, screw that, I don't want to see this guy get redeemed at all, I definitely don't want to follow him on his isekai... more>> journey either.

The author is really good, making me despise someone with just 2 chapters but to me at least, it backfired enough that the whole novel puts me off.

***

Returning to this novel once again, remembering how it turned out after chapter 3, I started over and completely skipped over chapter 3... the result, well I did read all the chapters in 2 days. I wouldn't call this fantastic novel worthy of 4.7 average score which would make it one of best novels on this websites, but it's rather alright overall.

If there is one thing that I would truly appreciate in this novel then it would be MC's ability to somewhat see the future... because of this ability, rather than simply getting lucky like most MCs, or some BS gut feeling or simply wanting to be the good guy, MC here makes choices based on this ability that mostly leads him to the best outcome. There are still some BS luck here and there and worse of all, MC seems to be capable of irregularly summon his overpowered future self for whatever reason whenever author messes up and puts him in the inescapable situation but hey overall it's rather good.

The world building is rather solid as well and this is an isekai with multiple people being able to go back and forth between the earth and "the isekai world" which makes the world building aspect so much deeper. The isekai world needs saving but the people aren't going there to save it but rather to simply profit from it, the moment it's beyond saving they can simply go back to earth and cut losses this fact alone makes it so much better than typical isekai where everyone who goes there has to save the world no matter what as even if they are scum they still need that world to continue existing, here it's all about the profit. <<less

I heavily suggest reading to at least chapter 20 (prologue arc) before making any decisions. The main character makes a deal with a god to send his feelings back into the past. Unfortunately, the past him was a rather large scumbag which took years (in the past life) for him to change. So before you get turned off by the main character's initial behavior, know that it only lasts for a couple of chapters.

And without ado here's the actual review: This is a story of somebody who... more>> has obtained the feelings and fragments of memories from his future. As such, although he's not a perfect superhuman who finds all of the lucky events and sweeps up all rewards (Ex: Reincarnator, King of the Battlefield), he has enough experience to do rather well in comparison to his peers. As for how the story, it follow one of the general Korean mass summoning to another world (King of the Battlefield, Reincarnator, Arena, etc.) tropes with a larger focus on character interaction and a character that only has enough future knowledge to have better than average combat skills and some slight intuition during turning points in his life.

All in all, a pretty good read. <<less

Usually I'm too lazy to leave a review, that's why I created this account just to review this masterpiece.

I'm your typical OP MC lover, lol. But never thought the progress of being strong is so damn good!

I found this novel quite plain in the beginning (because he's weak, maybe) and usually I dropped it right away, but the story held me thightly and I got immersed instead because of:

  1. The story telling is just that good! (Also thanks to the translator) everything just popped to my head. Sometimes I have a hard time imagine things but not with this one.
  2. Character development is slow, but the progress is enjoyable!
  3. Character interaction is so deep and vary!
    Spoiler

    RIP Like 'em Titties

    [collapse]
  4. Many details that amazed me. You'll find things in beginning will have big impacts in the future.
  5. Jokes and story are fresh! (At least, for me) I have a really good time along the journey.
  6. Do I really need to explain more? What are you waiting for? Go ahead and find out more yourself!
As all thing should be, there's always downside of something:

  1. Sometimes MC is childish, but hey? Aren't all men have a childish side? It's understandable, then, is it really a downside?
  2. Harem. Usually I never understand harem. But I really didn't want the heroines with anyone else so yeah, also understandable, but still a downside.
Only those two I could remember right now, there might be more depends on your preferences.

This has got to be the most 4/5 story I've read in a long, long time. It does a lot of things right, and it also does some things very, very bizarrely that I simultaneously credit and discredit it for.

Pros

    • Solid grammar and translation. Little to no awkwardness in understanding the text.
    • Action is well done from beginning to end of the main story. Litrpg elements present but not dominating or too crunchy. Ability use makes sense.
    • Plot progression is neither too slow nor too fast. Transition between arcs of action and arcs of rest are smooth.
    • Vibrant, recognizable side characters that recur throughout the story. Whether it be Jihu's handler, his teammates, the gods or the harem members they're easily recognizable through the text and possess unique voices.
    • Solid story in terms of makeup and execution. The antagonists have voices and thoughts that do make sense within context of story.
Mixed/Cons

    • The MC is... a strange one. His backstory and connection to the main plot are extremely compelling. A gambling addict that has completely ruined his life finds new hope in a completely new world, despite the strings attached. Here in this new world he can completely dedicate himself to a new cause so he can forget the sheer guilt and shame of his past, throwing himself headfirst into extreme danger and coming out a winner each time. He is capable of being ludicrously focused and determined, deathly serious and tenacious when it comes to survival and can also possess commanding determination when speaking with others in the alt world. When not serious he is a prankster and consistently trolls others (girls, specifically). The strangeness comes when we get into his character quirks, which in turn ties into the harem.
    • When the MC is dealing with his numerous female friends, he'll have frequent bouts of outright bizarre and childish behavior. While usually played for laughs, these moments clash so dissonantly with his normal personality that it becomes referenced by the harem in the plot directly. To the author's credit they legitimately make a serious attempt to explain why he exhibits such density and outlandish behavior with girls, and while I commend the author for doing so it also made me mildly uncomfortable. Spoiler:
      Spoiler

The MC was literally brainwashed/groomed from childhood by his childhood friend/ex-gf, and his mother both observed and approved it like nothing was wrong.

      [collapse]
    • The harem and the side stories. The harem within the main story is executed fairly well, if we're being honest. The girls are all recognizable and possess unique voices, some are adequately represented visually, give or take (Yuhui is biggest tits, Seonwha is supermodel with big tits, Teresa is pink everywhere big tits, Chohong is fit girl big tits, Phi Sora is lolol ti*s not big enough, etc.), they all have functions in the story and don't fade away. There is no commitment to romance or r-18 material until the very, very end and it's mostly up to the side stories to expand upon how the harem actually becomes a true harem, and man is it awkward as all hell. I once again applaud the author for trying at least to pull it off, but just tying directly to how bizarre the MC can be the dissonance generated by a harem plotline trying to be both funny and serious is very awkward. Spoiler:
      Spoiler

Two of his harem members legitimately r*pe him. Not halfway, not implied, no, two of them separately bait him into situations where he's drunk and drugged for the specific purpose of f*cking him against his will, and they both succeed. One instance is taken seriously, the second is the brainwashing ex-gf which is almost played for laughs. The main harem member even predicted the second instance would happen and did nothing to stop it. I found it disturbing.

      [collapse]
Extremely bizarre character quirks aside, a very solid and good piece of work.

lmao it got paywalled

This was an action story with great potential. It was emotionally compelling like none of its predecessors, a great set-up for interesting drama and character development, a couple good characters here and there... and then it all failed because the plot and the characters were watered down to the level of the average JP romcom dense protagonist. I'm actually amazed at how much of a trainwreck this series ended up being.

TBF, I get it why people would really like this despite its "flaws, " mainly if they... more>> don't see them as such in the first place. Sadly, I didn't get the satisfaction most people got out of it. Just kinda sad and disappointed <<less

I am so disappointed. I waited months for this novel to finish so I could enjoy it because it was really popular and I expected at least a badass MC like the one in Solo Leveling but instead, It's the kind that I hate the most : A guy who is completely oblivious to the women that fall in love for him, when it is sooooo obvious. ... more>>
Spoiler

I mean, there is times when girls go naked in his bed when he sleep and he wonder why they do that, he thinks that they are sleep walking my god! One time, there was a taxi driver who asked him if he was gay "jokingly" when he saw a woman cling to the MC in her sleep and he fend her off and insulted him but it's the only explanation, you can't be that s*upid

[collapse]

There is also the cliche were the bad guy can kill effortlessly the hero but for a reason or another, he plays with him and so the hero manage to survive.

He is polite to the point of being annoying between the "thank you" and the "sorry" that I feel he says all the time and for bullsh*t reason.
Spoiler

For example, he saves a princess from torture, help her conquering a fortress (by doing 90 percent of the job) and she reward him for it and for that, he feels indebt to her...

[collapse]

And man how I hate when he act like a spoiled child
Spoiler

he grumble non stop to a godess. A godess ! He speaks to her like it's her mother but to the king, he is anxious talking to him. Doesn't make any sense

[collapse]
His childish temperament is supposed to be funny but I find it more annoying than anything else.

I have a bone to pick with this type of webnovel. I feel like the author want to prove that this is not a phallocratic novel by overcompensating it in the relationship. Here it's the protagonist who act like a puppy with some of his women and is being r*ped by them. It's quite a clumsy way of doing it in my pov. And you can feel that trying to do that while making him a harem is quite challenging.

A good point, it is well written for a webnovel <<less

While I can't say the story is perfect for something on novel updates the series is one of the best I have read. At least at the time I'm posting this, the story is complete and has a satisfying ending and while there are better story's out there it's a good read. A lot of the things people complain about in the other reviews are explained by the end of the story, for example someone complained about the gods not doing anything when the parasite queen first invaded and got... more>> easily got overtaken
Spoiler

Later it is revealed that the world god or whatever his name is got greedy for more power and tried to absorb the parasite queen. Without that betrayal the gods would have been fine, probably.

One of my favorite novels which I actually stuck with and waited to be finished as it was translated. I loved it so much and couldn't stop reasing, I actually paid for advance chapters (which I almost never do). But in order to support the author and the translators, together with the enjoyment that this novel brought to me? Why not? :)

A really strong opening in the tutorial (though some weird unexplained stuff with regards to the availability and uses of various things), and trhen we get out into the world, and MC has fortuitous encounter after fortuitous encounter and powers up randomly to the point where he's comparable to the "high rankers" at level 1 because of his amazing training or something like no one else would try that when there are organizations that groom people to enter this game-world-thing. I think the plot was pretty strong throughout (though it... more>> got a bit dark/hopeless situation leading to MC miraculously brilliantly thinking of a way to save one dimensional side-characters in this arc), so 5/5 on that front, but characters are just so bland and uninteresting, and the MC really doesn't have anything going for him at all. No one makes good decisions ever including Mr. Incredible MC. <<less

This one has really good worldbuilding, and infuriating character development.

The first arc (Tutorial) is great. And it just accelerates from there. The exploration of the world, the early development of the MC from a gambling addict to a decent dude, the "game-lite" system, it's all great. But...

The MC is a f*cking moron. (The "Clever Protagonist" and "Charismatic Protagonist" tags on this site for the story are outright lies.) And he never stops being a moron. He has a universally applicable, easy-to-use cheat code to give him information on anyone and... more>> anything, but he always neglects to use it until it's too late. He always fails to use it on people he's trying to recruit or trust, on locations that could be dangerous, and so on. He's a typical "work harder because of average talent" MC, but with that cheat power he could do so much more. And he's absolutely WORTHLESS with women. All of them are, of course, super-powered, hot, and way into him, but he's a 27-year-old shrinking violet. And his friends and allies tend to also be morons. I think that the writer just had a very limited IQ and rather than write intelligent characters badly, he wrote a wide array of idiots because it was the limit of his ability. But it's just annoying to read, and after 300+ chapters I had enough. I'm about 60% of the way through the story and I just lost interest due to the repeated idiocy of the MC and his friends.

The story is also predictable, and the MC never faces any adversity that isn't easily resolved. Any time he does anything noteworthy, he usually gets saved through the sacrifices of others rather than succeeding on his own merits. And there are never, NEVER any lasting consequences.

Overall it's not a terrible story. It's just not a great one either. Because of that it took me quite a bit of time to notice that the flaws are greater than the merits. <<less

There is a lot to like about this story. Unfortunately, there is some to not like. Really not like. And when that "some" includes the main character? It undermines the rest of the story. Let's be honest. "Dense" main characters are not unusual in these stories. Second Coming of Gluttony though? Goes the extra mile. The MC isn't just, "damn you dense." He's, "holy sh*t how do you manage to walk and breathe at the same time, " dense.

The supposed excuse for his "every woman wants panties and wedding rings... more>> for gifts" level of ignorance?

Spoiler

His girl-best-friend-stalker and his mother have been brainwashing/conditioning him since middle school.

[collapse]

Its cute, at first, but then the author tries to combine it with a harem and trots it out for comedic effect? It completely fails to "fit" in with what so many other parts of the story try to establish the MC to be. And with how "suggestive" other content gets in comparison? It ended up ruining the experience.

So, yeah, a lot to like. But, sadly, there are some critical flaws that drag down the rest of the story. <<less

Good. Really f*cking good.

I understand that people might hate this novel in the beginning and not gonna lie, I dropped this novel 3 times because of how frustrated I was. But that begs the question, why am I still reading it? Curiosity. I was really really really curious on how an immature dimwit like him would progress in a world like that. One thing I learned from this is patience. The story was meh around the first 100ish chapters but as you keep on reading, more and more things from... more>> the beginning of the novel that didn't make sense, get explained in a logical and reasonable fashion. I saw some people complain about his plot armour but c'mon, let's be realistic here. Who would want to read a story where the MC dies early on and is dead forever?

People also talked about his tendency to gamble and how it ruins the story but I don't think so. C'mon. Our MC is literally a gambling addict. Some people might say "But he quit! Why is he still gambling????????? Bad Story 0/5!!!!!" (<--- Exaggeration) but realistically, if it was that easy to get rid of an addiction that's been honed over YEARS of time then why are there so many smokers & gambling addicts out there in the real world right now? You can't expect someone to change instantly and though it may look like our MC did, all he did was replace his gambling addiction with a new addiction.
Spoiler

That addiction being going to Paradise and tryna be a hero.

Long chapters, great characters with good interaction between them, solid world building.

At times I felt myself getting annoyed with some of the characters being too dense to realize something, but after having read a fair share of these types of novels I kind of expected it. The biggest reason why I like this series as much as I do is that the chapters are nice and long. There is often either a lot of detail or a lot of development in each chapter, which makes me feel very immersed.

The characters... more>> are often fleshed out and have their own motivation, reasons, generally things that define them. Nearly none of them feel like they are just there to serve as a stereotype, rather they each play their own role. THey interact well with each other, the dialogue always feels natural and real.

Compared to other series, I feel there is quite a fair amount of information of how the world (s) work, how people live and how the worlds interact with each other. This might not be important to everyone, but personally I enjoy this a lot. <<less

This is superbly written, not like a novel, but like a book. The writing is worlds apart from 99% of the novels here. I really want to give it 10*, but unfortunately the novel has some flaws, so this is only a bad 4*.

Spoiler

1. The world is supposed to be cruel, but the fact that people that die will just revive without their memories heavily distracts from that. All the humans in the story often switch from "No, you mustn't die" to "Lul, it's only a game".

[collapse]

Spoiler

2. The motivation of the MC is a mess. He acts like a hero because of his "memories" and gets the chicks by treating the Paradise natives like humans. This seems very gimmicky. Also I just can't take the "dying" parts serious, because of #1

[collapse]

Spoiler

3. Girls and harem. There are girls everywhere. At the beginning it is fine, because he has to "work" hard to get their acquaintance. But suddenly there are girls in high positions everywhere, and they all seem to like the MC very much. Furthermore most of them are described as both hardcore and innocent at the same time.

[collapse]

Spoiler

4. The whole contract thing kinda gets swept under the river. Same with the stats, skills and status window (the MC never seems to check it). Basically after the tutorial everything becomes a mess.

This is a really garbage novel. I regret reading it wasting my time on it. Man the MC is dumb as hell being all smart at planning and other things except being s*upidly dumb against the female characters. They all turn a 180 after the next chapter. Really liking it for now. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Characters are well written multy dimensional and not black and white.
  • The world build is well done and original
  • The pacing is good. Not to fast but neither slow.
  • The MC is strong but not OP, there is always risk in the battles and a sense that he might die.
  • The translation is really good and the translators are fast
Cons:

  • None that I can think of
All in all strongly recommend if you want a fantasy story where the MC isn't op or edgelord that hates... more>> everything <<less

Story wise it deserve 5 star. But I don't like author method to attract reader by adult contents.

MC got a lot of lucky encounter because of his good karmic deed in the past (parallel future).

The characters interaction is also nice. You won't get bored by "solo act". It's a big plus.

There are more female characters than male character, but still on good ratio. It seem female characters is more op than male.

Definitely a story worth to read

This novel has some drawbacks, but it has such a good rating for a reason and not for some bs advertising. The main difference of this novel to others is that MC isn't some kind of perfect all-knowing genius, at the start of the novel he is a gambling addict with a very flawed personality - and he grows, step by step, to become a true leader. The memories he got from the past aren't his own, at least at the start of the novel. His "past life" was just... more>> some sort of vague dream for him instead of real experience, he remembers only the most important bits and pieces, at least until his ability started to awaken much later in the story.

Some people complain about MC risking his life even when his eyes warned him. Em, in all such situations he didn't have a choice in the matter as a part of the team, so IDK what is wrong with the reading comprehension of those people. Harem in this novel is one of the best-made harems as most girls are interesting and unique enough.

There are three real drawbacks of the novel I can mention though:

1. The level-up system isn't well thought out and not explained properly, the same goes for the training of MC and lack of really trained people (like professional soldiers) amongst the summoned who should have an overwhelming advantage in this novel's setting. Also, MC could have used his points and elixirs to become super strong fast without many consequences, but instead, he stayed relatively weak for far too long for the sake of "long-term gains" which weren't guaranteed beforehand (it should be just unrealistic to expect to achieve High level in stat just by training, at least until meeting his OP teacher).

2. MC doesn't use his eyes' abilities, especially status checking ability, as often as he could be. But, I think that it wasn't important for the plot (statuses were mentioned when required though) and the author just wanted to avoid unnecessary infodumps with lots of statuses.

3. Some elements of the plot are mentioned but then forgotten by the author (for example "s*ave using" Chinese in Neutral Zone). The author obviously hasn't thought out everything beforehand and changed her plans in the process of writing. Like adding
Spoiler

"Ressurection IRL for everyone after death in Paradise"

way too late in the story.

Other than that this story is both entertaining and unique, sometimes even emotional and totally worth it. Moments when MC temporarily gains his memories back are just way too epic and can compensate for all the drawbacks this novel has. <<less
