This novel felt like I had a book for a bed. A bed that lifted me, imprinted on me, rested me and charged me up to write. It has flaws, yes. If it weren't a web novel I'd probably be a lot more conflicted. But it's a web novel, meant to hook you and make you want to keep reading. And somehow the story carries you, Juho carries you, and the supporting cast is shouting and carrying you forward so you feel more and more fulfilled with each word. And... more>> believe it or not, it created a massive hole in my writing wall (block). Do yourself a favour. Try it.

Fun fact: I made this account just so I could give this book five stars. <<less

This novel had been in my reading list for a long time and I regretted not reading it sooner.

The novel has good aspects such as character growth, where side characters has development and personality. The MC helped the characters he met and gave positive impact to their lives.

Though, this kind of story hardly had obstacles for the MC to solve, thus the lack of tension.

When I almost finished the story, I thought of giving it 4 star. Then, I saw the ending and I really liked it. The ending doesn't... more>> feel rushed and had a nice conclusion to the problem that MC had been avoided for so long. The way it executed feels smooth and memorable. <<less

I really like this novel. It feels like I learned a lot about writing and stuff here, and I'm very genuinely grateful for that.

Everything I like about this novel: (I'm not going to elaborate on anything tho -_-)

1. The depth of the story

... more>> 2. The flawed protagonist

3. The memorable side characters

4. A satisfying success story, but one that comes with great effort.

5. Character growth

6. Finally, the reader's learning experience (well, I dunno if this only applies for me or not, coz like I said, I found myself learning a lot from this story)

Although the continuous time skips in the second half of the story might feel a little jarring, you'll find yourself getting used to it at one point.

If I were to point one flaw out tho, it would be that the big time skip towards the end was a little too sudden for me and it took me a while to get used to the new flow of the story. However, just when I started wondering if the author was rushing to the end in a hurry, I got a considerably satisfying experience at the end, so I haven't got much to complain about.

The rest is up to the reader's interpretation ~ or so says our protagonist. <<less

Boring and bland. Its like staring at the calm ocean, at first you are interested and intrigued and then you get sick and tired of it as you stared at it for years and years as nothing changes. That's how it felt like. It's stagnant. I have to force myself to finish it.

Should have been 3/5 but I rated it 1 star since so many of the reviews here are so fake and are trying so hard to make themselves some kind of "elites" who are in another level in... more>> understanding this novel and literature as a whole. I love slice-of life story but this is just boring. <<less

It's fun, and I'm still working my way through it, but it's not incredibly satisfying. The main problem is that there's no sense of struggle or buildup past a certain point. Every piece the main character puts out is wonderful and well-received. He's got a rather OP language power that he honestly didn't need, and he excels at everything he puts his mind to... writing, translation, etc. Around where I am (chapter 150ish), there's really no sense of suspense for anything. If the author mentions an award, he gets it.... more>> If there's an interview with another author, they end up talking about him.

The hype surrounding the protagonist is especially underwhelming because a lot of it is due to his second chance. Like, everyone's all agog because he's just 18... No!! I, the reader, know that he is in secret a 50-year-old ojii-san! Everyone praises him for his language abilities... No!!!! He didn't even earn those! They were just showered down on him!

If the author had removed his language superpower and forced the protagonist to struggle a little more, it would have been a much more interesting read. I very much enjoyed the MC's chill, go-with-the-flow personality in the beginning. <<less

I normally don't read slice of life novels. Because I find most of them boring or repetitive or a chore to read.

Anime's like Oregairu or Classroom of elite are one of my favorites but when I tried reading the the LN I found them a chore and had to read them few chapters at a time while taking rests in between them.

That is not me. I always read a large amount of chapters in one sitting. So even if it is a novel I particularly like I always wait for... more>> its chapters to pile up before reading.

Now The Great Storyteller despite being a slice of life felt very different from other slice of life I have read till now (although I haven't read that many).

I read to the latest chapter in one seating. It didn't feel repetitive, boring or a chore to read.

The Author has writing style that makes me want to read more. And the story keeps pogressing forward. The characters in the story felt very real.

And for once we get a reincarnated protagonist who is not like a child or teenager but acts his age. <<less

It's an amazing slice of life story about writing and writers. There are elements of drama mixed into the main character's daily life that make the story so interesting to read but the real hook is the interesting characters. They feel so real and alive. They each have their own philosophies and each decide how to act and how to live. That makes the interactions so compelling to read.

The author is definitely already a great storyteller.

This is the best nonfanatsy novel I read. It is slow pieced an is just nice. It shows that other peaple opinion is not everything that is better not to care about randoms on streets. This story made want to write myself. I like the abstraction showed by author about the crow. But im also worried for MC. This book helped me to stay sane when my mind was in horrible state. I will reread it.,

This novel is honestly overrated. It was a good read in general, however, there was a lack of plot-buildups and suspense in the novel. The MC faces all problems with an unfazed character, and readers can almost always guess how each problem is resolved. Readers are oblivious to how the character manages to be randomly reincarnated nor his random superpowers. I do agree that this novel is different from all the other OP MC tropes and Mary Sue tropes, yet the novel was slightly disappointing to me.

The transitions between certain... more>> scenes and the MC's imagination definitely need improvement as there are times where the sudden change left me confused. This was especially true for the huge time skip (10+ years for christ's sake), leaving readers clueless on what happened for the past decades. For the first 300 chapters, the novel goes into detail on how the MC writes each novel and the relationship between characters yet the time skip ruins the entire mood of the novel.

I felt like the relationship between character to character could be further developed and focused on. It's slightly ironic how the author talks about being a good writer, yet fails to captivate the readers (slightly hypocritical mate).

Nonetheless, it was a great read until the time skip and then everything just falls apart. In short, the novel was a great way to waste time but it was definitely an interesting read. <<less

It is an very emotional story, one that will make you feel in many ways and draw you into it's story.

There is no negative influences written into this story. Such as no nationalism/racism or subtle enough to not stand out. That is common to find in asian novels china vs everyone, korea vs china and etc. This novel is quite open minded in that regard.

There is no influences of the plot being dragged out, messed up or author stepping in such as nerfing or boosting the MC/Enemies to force/protect plot.

This... more>> is a great story about life, emotions, dreams, regrets, expectations and writing. It pulls you in and doesn't make you regret reading it except maybe the ending slightly, hoping for it to be slightly more about reactions of the last book.

It is such a thought provoking novel that it had made me seriously consider that every named character in the story was directly created and linked to the plot and MC of the story. Thinking that every named character was some piece aspect of the overall MC, that the MC was living through a life where all of the named characters were parts of himself that were trying to help or guide him in some kind of dream/spiritual vision or something like that.

Ending is actually nothing like that but it was great enough story to make me seriously consider the above plot, still the actual ending is great too. <<less

Pleasure seeking physiological novel without any romance.

It's well written. If you read novels like this for pleasure then it will get the job done, but it doesn't go overboard and still has some realism. And it does a great job without any romance.

A unique one. A worth reading novel.

The author is truly different from others. This novel is far from those mainstream novels about transmigration, reincarnation and vrmmrpg, where all the MC has the same goals. Its either for revenge, faceslapping, to be at the top of the world.

Here, the novel is a chill story where we get to see, read, feel the struggle of Juho after his rebirth. Struggling on how to avoid his past mistake. Struggle on how to make his next book good and worthy. Struggle to prove that... more>> he doesn't want to be "genius", he wants to be a great story teller.

This novel also shows us how to be a writer/author. We get to read how complicated the mind of those authors.

When we see something ordinary, for them they saw different things, details or inspiration. <<less

Might wait more than a year before rereading, it's heavy at times, and I don't feel like we get enough info about how the MC handles day to day life for something that's a slice of life type novel.

Spoiler

We find out he donates most of his income, but is he keeping any for emergencies or retirement? I feel like I need to know if the MC is altruistic to the point of idiocy, or if he's being responsible.

Original review:

Really no novel quite like this. Every chapter feels good to read. Love the MC. He's using his second chance like a genuine person would. Tiny cheat with language, but that adds more to the story rather than being a distraction.

Highly recommended. <<less

Started off really really well, great setting and the idea is interesting. The style of writing is especially fresh and well done. But as the story goes on there isn't really any character development, there isn't any antagonist, rival, or struggle (yet) at all. Every writing he creates is a huge hit, with no sense of build up or struggle or lesson, and somehow people want to see his face very badly?? I mean, I love some stories, a lot, but I've never bothered how the author looks like.

Re-read for the third time. Still one of my favorite story of all time.

It's just so charming. There's no over the top villains, drama or revenge. It feels real, so it's not boring either.

Yes, going on an epic journey through the Mount Everest while beating your rivals and evil conglomerates can be amazing. But also going on a picnic to the hill next to your childhood home with your family and friends is unforgettable, too.

This story is the later.

I already read the whole novel. Don't read other reviews. If you want an entertaining and relaxing slice of life story that at the same time has interesting moments and characters that feel vivid and real, this story is for you. Although it follows the generic concept of a second chance in your life, the way in which the protagonist climbs is not as direct as in others. As someone else said, it's a more personal story.

"If I had to summarize the story very briefly, I would say as if... more>> you were spying on the diary of someone from this world who actually got a second chance."

You come to believe everything, it's all very real and it's great to make comparisons and imagine the different writing styles of different characters, and the truth is that for a story that focuses on writing, many good things happen and I fell in love with Coin and other characters, which I won't mention due to spoilers... I even felt a little like each character in the play itself to some degree, not only the MC.

Seriously speaking, I felt like writing after reading this, something that for many would be unthinkable.

---

tldr; In short, don't have high expectations, if you have free time, use this quiet story to relax and entertain yourself, because it is very entertaining and has good characters. As far as progressing or going up steps, it's better to get immersed in the story to figure out how you should process that, and not do it in such a direct way as in other stories. And also, the translation and writing style of the story itself seems excellent to me, and this is the first novel that I have read completely in English, being myself NOT a native. It felt good. If you like to read novels in English because you already feel more familiar with the language, perhaps this novel will help you expand your vocabulary. Many words I could guess from the context and very few I had to look for their meaning.

You'd be surprised at the original little things and details that can happen. I liked many things, it is not a perfect story, but it is a story worth reading until the end.

In general, a pleasant and balanced experience.

Let me start with this : I don't care about what people say in their reviews because in the end it's theirs not mine ! We are all different so understandably what we define as a great novel/movie ext... will differ !

--------------

This is my first time leaving a review for I usually see no need for it. I have just finished reading the final chapter. It was not what I expected at all ! The last section of the chapter left me speechless ! The realization of it being the... more>> end didn't drow on me till I failed in my task in searching for the next chapter.

Spoiler

by the last ten chapters I was so sure that he will die ! So I was feeling edgy all the time ! So when he survived I was left numb

[collapse]

As a writer myself, I loved how accurate and passionate the process of writing all the authors in the story had !

Of course as all stories this one too had downfall
Spoiler

his parents presence in the novel was so rare and bland

[collapse]

I saw so many people complaining about the lack of character development, I however see it as he who drown at 47 years old had gone threw a lot of development. You can't expect a change in character if there is no motive or Reason behind it ! When he started his second life he already has gone threw the "character development"
Spoiler

if you read till the last hundred chapter then you will be able to see his struggles and desperation to survive !

[collapse]

On a lighter note ! I must say that I loved all the side characters that always appear out of nowhere

Spoiler

my top five goes like this : Kelley coin / baron / juho / Mr. moon / sung pil !!

But I absolutely loved all the his high school friends and his colleagues SEO Joon is just so lovable.

[collapse]

I found myself being so obsessed with other characters that appeared for brief period

Spoiler

the guy with the gray hat !!! He said that the competition was his last shot, but then he ended up losing to sung pil ! What was his fate !!!? I'll never know ! Mango too !!!

This will always be my favorite novel and go-to novel when needing motivation. It made me feel the love I have always had for writing. I stopped writing years ago but the novel inspired me to continue writing again. I have a plot in mind and only have the outline. Still not finalize and have yet to start but it's a good step. I was trying MC's technique when envisioning his plot and characters which helps me flesh out mine. I wish there is a paperback copy. I would definitely... more>> purchase it even if it's costly. <<less

First of all, I believe that this novel may not be to everyone’s taste. And by that I mean, the plot may not entice everyone to read the novel as a whole. I’ve seen some comments saying that the story was boring and bland for them for the first few chapters, forgetting the fact that this is also a slice of life of genre and not your typical isekai overpowered MC stuff. LIFE IS ALL ABOUT THE SLOW AND BORING PACE PEOPLE. Some are expecting too much from the novel... more>> when this is actually normal for a slice of life kind of story.

The cons for this novel is that there are some scenes that seems to be discreetly repetitive. It’s not that very much evident since it’s still entertaining. With how the story goes, I believe that some things are bound to repeat itself when we’re talking about real life here. I guess that’s how it is for me but oh well.

Another is that there are some loopholes in the story. The cause of his rebirth is one thing, but I also find it hard to comprehend how and why the MC is equipped with a “language acquisition device” after his rebirth. I also don’t get why is it necessary for him to be a polyglot when learning 1 or 2 languages (apart from Korean) is enough considering how he only usually interact with those who knows the English language. I get that it aided him in doing one of his long-length novels in the story and had actually helped some people using it, but is learning all languages that really that vital in the story?

Now onto the reasons why you should TRY to read the novel. The plot? Amazing. The characters? Lovable. The translation? Fluffin EPIC. I’ve been doubting whether the novel is really just a typical novel to be read online and not some real literature. I really applaud the translators of this novel for giving their readers a wonderful reading experience. The story made me compel to read more literature than the usual ones I’ve been reading online. You’re even bound to learn a lot as you proceed to finish the novel and question things that are of the ordinary, like Life itself. Some parts are very philosophical as well. If you see comments saying that the story motivates them to write, then you’ll probably also feel it somehow too.

I beg to disagree with the comments saying that the novel lack angst and struggles to be experienced by the MC. Although I see their point since there is no ACTUAL antagonist in the story, I believe that the struggle is the one that the MC is facing, which is his fear of death and of himself. It’s just not that evident in the first half of the novel since it mostly revolves around the MC and his relationship towards his surroundings and his readers ((Which you won’t also get bored of since every character is very distinct from one another and every interaction would seem laughable and sometimes dumbfounding)). I love how the author had described the way the MC feels, conveying to its readers that this story will affect YOU as well. The way they also described how the MC thinks by putting their readers in the perspective or the world that the MC sees is simply astonishing. I won’t delve into the matter but you really should read it for yourself ajdslf

I was kind of sad with the time skip since it felt like they rushed everything for it to end. At first I was disappointed with its ending, thinking that it could’ve been done better. However, thinking what it would be like if I were to think of an ending, I thought that anything’s good as long as the MC wouldn’t die like how his first life’s turned out to be. I also like the addition of the crow and the kid ‘crow’ and how it is related to each other at the end. At least we all know what the crow symbolizes in the MC’s life, as well as the fact that there will be someone to carry on the MC’s literary work even after his death.

So, if a slice of life genre is not your cup of tea, MOVE ON. Although one should try other things as well to find out what really interests you in life. Who knows, this would also be your type of novel and inspire you to do other things in life (like be a writer perhaps) ;--D <<less

This novel is actually pretty good. But it sometimes pretty bland the more you read it, especially in the later parts. I think most of the slice of life story are like this. This novel is like you'll find yourself being distracted by other interesting novels and temporarily stopped and only read it again if you have much time and don't have things to read anymore–that kind of novel. The beginning of the story makes you feel interested towards the story, no- the interesting parts only stopped after he revealed... more>> himself to the public. I think that's when it started to become bland but not boring. Yes, not boring. One thing that makes this novel unique. It draws you closer and makes you want to read until the end but not to the point where you have to sacrifice your nights to read it. As I said, not boring but just bland and plain.

Overall, it was still a great read. <<less
