With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

It's pretty good. It's basically a Chinese Wuxia novel with cultivation and power creep but it isn't handled in some random or arbitrary way. The author always establishes stuff ahead of time or gives fairly reasonable justification for power ups. It's not like, for example, "Oh, I just remembered about this tunnel that leads into a totally different dimension and there's this new power called Laws that I never mentioned until now."

Besides that, the characters are well written for the most part and there are some legitimately suspenseful moments.

My biggest... more>> criticism is that it feels repetitive. It's something you come to expect when reading a very lengthy CN novel but I'm in the middle of volume 3 and I feel burnt out. I hear volume 4 is better but we'll see. <<less

The early and middle parts of the story are great (At least for me), but I feels the story quite rushed on the latter parts, still enjoyable though.

This was a pretty good novel, especially at the beginning. Both the author's writing and the translation were top notch. However, it can be EXTREMELY confusing!!

Spoiler

the only issue I had was with the ending. It ended up being another ridiculous and crazy super powered battle that only partly made sense. Tack on to that how confusing this novel can be in general, and you really get lost and confused. It also had the kind of ending where it somewhat "hints" at a happy ending, but is more like... "well what do YOU think this means?" Always felt that kind of ending was just a cop out. So many character relationships were left unresolved as well, like the payout you were waiting for never came.

A fun and very-very-well written novel, well written enough that its flaws won’t disturb you too much. Our MC is very bland and not too much focus on his character/character development. However, what covers that is the sheer amount of mystery, exposition and world building that we get. It makes it easy for us to insert ourselves into the story and ride along for the journey. Honestly, it feels like im playing a Fromsoft game or following an RPG where they just drop you in the starting area and not... more>> tell you anything at all. If you’ve also read mother of learning, this novel is done in a similar way. Just a pure and fun adventure through and through. Fair warning though, if you’re not a fan of slow burn, less actiony, more intellectual type of MC and always winning by the skin of their teeth type of stories then this novel isn’t for you. But please don’t rate this lowly as it is one of the more polished novels and feels like a more published one (outside of the usual CN style of adding tons of fluff to pad chapters longer). <<less

I can only say volume one was perfect. I truly hooked for volume 2 and wished to continue till volume 5.

But all I can say is that I didn't like volume 2 as much. It somehow felt like a sequel to volume 1 but repeating the same the same circumstances and villains from volume 1. And I would have liked it but sadly, I will have to drop it.

The thing that irked me about the main character was his overreliance on the cheat space before he proceeds. It's like he wouldn't be able to do anything without it. Also lack of a solid goal, patnered with his weak mind and mentality.

The pacing is so slow, yet he's cultivating too fast. He always progresses after 200 chapters, yet one week equals 50 chapters.

You keep getting reminded that he wishes to return to earth. But in truth, he's only getting stronger to survive the week's final boss. Just why is he always in danger like 3 times a week while every other character isn't. There's also the matter of side character stories that you actually don't care about.

Nobody cares about Audrey's tea parties and observations. You only ever care about her when she's given a mission from MC and his "adorer" otherwise she's blunt.

Also nobody cares about Fors, the super author and her beyonder meetings.

But for some reason, people like Derrick, Alger and Azik are only rarely talked about. And it leaves you in frustration knowing that you will never know much about them.

Another point is MC not having any relationships. For some reason, he's a loner, has no true friends. Only work acquaintances and so called connections. It's like he's estranged from from everyone just because he has some trivial secret. (It's trivial because no one will actually steal the cheat space, and neither will they invade Earth.)

What I mostly hated was that the fights were good. Yet the power levels were meaningless. It's like anybody can completely defeat anyone and they can't at the same time. When he was level 8, he was almost killed by a Paladin of level 9. Even though he has already killed lots of level 7 fighter classes and above. He only survived because of some plot armor called sharp newspaper. And somehow as a level 7, he was able to fight level 5s, who are freakin High sequence beyonders.

Now comes the final part, what I hated the most was the author 's overuse of plot armor and impossible coincidences. Somehow sealed artifact 0-08, the ink less quill, has more power than the gods themselves, yet no god or angel has ever tried to get it. Somehow it can manipulate the fate of the True Creator yet he just shrugs at it. It can even block the cheat space from divination, yet somehow the MC always survives. Why? And its restrictions contradict its use. Like can be used in a city wide radius, yet it can manipulate the true creator who's in another dimension.

When he was first captured by Daly divination, the cheat space somehow decided to protect him. And he's always spared by his enemies. Like his constant fear of Sharron's betrayal, but she never even cares. When mr.A died, he was spared, not even arrested. And somehow his knowledge in tarot club and coincidences make him a mysterious god. Why is everybody then s*upid? Do you mean no one has tried to manipulate the cheat space secretly or realize the crimson light is a connection?

I would have read longer, if not for the fact that the hyped up situations and beyonder levels are 1000+ chapters in the future.

[collapse]

Not because it's bad but because I slowly lost interest in the MC in the story as it never delivers in time and you're forced to wait 800 chapters for a conclusion while the faults in the novel overwhelmed me gradually till I quit.

But I am not stopping, just waiting till more than 1000 chapters have been translated. I do this because the pacing is too slow, even slower than slice of life novels yet it's not. So as you finally finish an arc, more than 200 chapters have passed and little has progressed. <<less

This is one of the best light novelsI have read so far. The MC is insteresting, the sexundary characters are interesting, the world building is amazing, the magic systen is unic and easy to follow. The enemies are not weaklings, they are hard to fight, the MC has to really plan a lot to defeat them.

The onky think I would criticize is that he doesnt do many team up whith the rest of his 'club' but even that is explained. I honestly dont know how this story could end and... more>> I'm overjoyed for that. <<less

Just to qualify I haven't quite finished this novel yet. I started it unsure how the story would play out. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I have for only having started reading it out of boredom. It's weird, strange and odd rolled up into one and that makes it amazing to me. Often times you can guess how a story will play out, how the MC will get out of a situation. The main character isn't overpower. Doesn't have a cheat like system. He does get... more>> a couple perks of being reincarnated but they are things that help inform him and enable him to prepare and plan a path. I was and still am drawn into all of the strangeness of the world the author created. From the power system, to the society it's all great. The MC finding out more info on the world is an adventure itself mixed into many other adventures. The stories strangeness and weird powers. It might sometimes follow a familiar cadence, story telling wise, but the inventiveness of the story, characters and powers makes up for it in many ways. <<less

it's a good novel, but it's lacking in polish, as if author didn't bother having anyone to read the novel and point out the problems.
the characters have some mental bs going for them, MC is sometimes pulling 9000IQ moves while at other times feels like someone who has IQ in the negatives. Author also loves doing "gotcha" nonsense, pretends that characters screwed up and then shows how they actually pulled a smart move, and I saw many people commending it, but to me it just looked scummy writing at best and vomit-inducing to the point of dropping at worst. The worst of it shows when author does that in the same battle with both or multiple characters doing that "gotcha" nonsense over each other other again and again and you just keep wondering when will this Uno bs end already.

anyway let's go over the tags-that-shouldn't-be-there-but-i-can't-edit-them-so-i'll-review-them for fun:
Harsh Training- doesn't exist, don't know what to say about it, unless you think that going on the weekend for an hour's target practice is "harsh training".
Immortals- there are no immortals as a special group, it is vaguely mentioned that the stronger you get the longer you live to the point that time has no impact, but that's all.
Multiple Realms- this can be easily misunderstood, there are 3 realms at best, 1 being real world, 2 being a place that's somewhat there but is mostly used for fast-travel, and 3 being a place that barely gets mentioned and is almost never seen, also all 3 realms exist kinda in the same space.
Mythical Beasts- this is complete bs tag, just cause there is "mythical" in the name doesn't mean that it's a "beast", this is like saying that oh idk Sailor Moon can turn into a magical girl that means she's a Mythical Beast lol.
Philosophical- this is very very very minor, if I was searching for a novel with this tag and got recommended this book then I would be quite disappointed.
Proactive Protagonist- kinda right, but MC also likes to go with the flow quite a lot so not sure if it really fits.
Souls- I don't really remember anything concrete about souls? Somewhere that I could point and say "that part of the book had stuff to do with souls". Sure it's a thing, but eh.
BIG ASS SPOILER
Spoiler

really? This is a really serious spoiler you know, oh well.
Transmigration- there's no transmigration in this novel, and if you don't like I write this in, well I put it in spoilers so it's your fault

[collapse]
Werebeasts- not really, there are maybe 3 characters, but they're not werebeasts, they just have a power to grow nails and fur and stuff. If you really wanna go out a limb, there is 1 major and 1 minor but still important character that is well, a wolf, that used a Transformation Ability to shapeshift into a human, kinda, almost human.

one tag I would like to be added would be Naive Protagonist, although it is a gimmick, while MC is acting intelligent for a decent part of the novel, there are times, especially on important occasions, when MC acts extremely naive and it bites him in the ass, which is really weird cause he's being lauded as a smart person and all, yet makes dumb mistakes for no reason.

TL;DR: so yeah, it's a pretty good novel, but if you expect an "Award-winning Work" like the tag says, then too bad, it's not polished enough to be an award-winning work to me, even if it gets an award, to me it will be a joke. Also I read the official synopsis of the author's new novel that came out after this one, ffs it's so bad, even after reading this novel and liking it quite a bit, I instantly lost all desire to read ait, it's that bad, not to mention author screwed the ending of Lord of the Mysteries so hard I don't even want to read Lord of the Mysteries 2.
-1 star for lack of polish
-1 star for characters with "fluctuating" IQ
3/5

edit: just remembered, for those saying that this is a well thought out novel, it has blatant retcons inside of it, I wouldn't call that "well thought out", as well as plotholes that make plot extremely contrived and plain s*upid at times, sometimes plot is being forced so hard by the author you can't call it "well thought out" ever again once you notice it

I read this novel because of over hyped, but I'm into action novel like LEGENDARY MECHANIC, full of comedy and humor, now I'm at chapter182, so far full of mysteries that I don't even understand, action here is so few, Klein is still weak because of that I dropped this novel so many times

The power system are so complicated, and even after klein at sequence 8 he still doesn't have any magic skills.

I'm so tired to push myself to read this novel, I still don't get what people are hyping... more>> about, maybe because it's not like other Chinese novels.

I'm just gonna drop here and probably will pick up again after 2 months. <<less

Dropped

I finished the first volume, Clown, and it didn't keep my interest. It was too slow for a mystery or horror novel and it had too much action for a slice of life.

It is well written and the translator did a wonderful job, it is just missing that little sparkle which would have made it a 5 star for me

This is good novel. It is supposed to be Lord of the Mysteries, but sorry I don't find things a bit mysterious even from other people's perspective. I know I haven't read far yet but I don't expect the story to develop as rapidly as it needs to be. It is slow causing the story to feel bland like even after 100+ chapters, the author can say - The real story has not begun yet! Like wait so I wasted all my time just on tutorials? Even after the MC... more>> transmigrates there is no real info about world that he needs to know is discovered and he is still in his rabbit role from where he does small jobs rather than aiming high. Tbh personally I hate people who live life thinking themselves high and mighty or showing off while being in a rabbit hole, like why pretend when you have all scenarios mapped out in your head? If you can run a simulation talk in your head, why can't you do it outside. Practice and experience are what you need to be able to comprehend stuff, why am I saying stuff like this here? Its because our MC is an illusion master who has no real info about world since he didn't travel anywhere and also can't since he is broke, he pretends to be high and mighty and people accept it? Its that easy huh?

Well either way have a good read, you found a Good Novel that's for sure! <<less

I'm at chapter 37 right now, and I have yet to find any fault in this novel.

Things I like:

- Protagonist thinks ahead and has a polite scam-artist type of personality, which I enjoy. The aspects of his character mentioned in the prologue are also written to good use. For example, it's mentioned at the start that in the modern world he was a keyboard warrior/armchair thinker (someone who acts as if an expert on the internet despite basically only citing Wikipedia), and he enjoys posturing in the transmigrated world as... more>> well.

- Characters have distinct and perhaps quirky, but realistic personalities. His brother knows how to speak well, his boss is forgetful, his sister is practical. The blend of characters in the main plot create interesting dynamics, and in the ancillary scenes provide flavour.

- Lack of overdramatic or clichéd writing. Perhaps I've read too many bad CN stories lately, but the progression in this novel has so far been well thought-out, has good pacing and has never relied on insubstantial "telling, not showing" descriptions. Seriously man, I can't take any more paragraphs where the peanut gallery is in awe of some lady's ethereal beauty or some dude's gigantic, rock hard wallet. <<less

This would maybe be my favorite novel if not for some flaws it has (Always my personal opinion.)

For example, what I dont like at all is how '' MC is always acting as someone else''. And what I mean by this is that he is always in disguise and doesnt show his true personality to anyone else (This happens since chapter 300 until the chapter I am right now 1200) . I mean its ok to have MC disguise as someone else to achieve his goals, but in a... more>> novel you'd expect MC to act like himself most of the time wouldn't you? But this MC has a disguise, on top of a disguise, on top of a disguise and on top of a disguise!!! He has only been himself for first 200 chapters...

Furthermore, he never gets the recognition he deserves.. He has saved the capital city thrice by himself, he always saves people but ofcourse noone knows or cares because he is always impersonating someone else. You'd expect that after he saves everyone for the 100th time he will get some recognition right? But no, not in this novel.

Also I hate how after he revives for the first time, he never tells his family or friends that he is alive. And I understand he does this to protect himself and his family at first, but after all this time he has become strong enough to protect himself from most of his enemys but he still doesnt tell them... His interactions with his brother and sister at the beggining on the novel were a big plus on this novel, but nowadays he has no ties with anyone and why?? Because he is always in a triple disguise!!

You cant just have a MC with no personal interactions at all, thats not how a novel works.

But overall, i'd still give this a 7/10 and its quite a good novel for those who are thinking of reading it.

Finally this is the best novel i've read ''Release that Witch'' and if have not read it just yet, I suggest you get started right away! <<less

I definitely enjoyed it, I feel like it started off a little shakey, the first 10-20 chapters dont really sell it the best but afterwards its fine.

This novel is a lot better than the author's other novels so hopefully, they can at least keep this one going well, the other three novels by this author aren't the best.

I only really have some minorish complaints about the decisions the MC makes at times, no one said he was a genius but I do think this guy makes questionable moves.

After the MC... more>> leaves the hometown I do think the story loses some of it emotional appeal, several characters don't end up making that journey with him for reasons.

Outside of the members of the "Club" there is not a lot of reason to care about the rest. Some characters and their situations/viewpoints are definitely more interesting than others. a big plus is the fact that the magic system is pretty unique <<less
