This novel is BS. Author keeps having MC fight opponents that is one level above him or way overpowered then he has to get saved by stronger allies. Plot armor to the make in this novel. With how easily MC can power up, author could have him continued to focus on getting stronger (MC can increase levels in a month or two), but instead hey let's make MC go on missions and somehow end up fighting an overpowered opponents that he can't win against. Technically MC doesn't need to... more>> fight any body to get stronger or level up, he just needs money to buy the magic books/artifacts/magic items..... There are alot of ways for him to obtain money but somehow author keeps insisting he's constantly broke. Also MC has so many magic spells in his arsenal yet he doesn't know how to use half of them against strong opponents. MC is also too much of a goody-two-shoes. <<less

The people who wrote 1 star reviews after reading 5 - 50 chapters are tripping. This is so damn good! Lot of great world building, an expansive and realistic magic system. Also the characters are pretty damn good. Its basically the life story of a magician told in first person view from his humble beginnings to the apex of magic. The story is told over a long time, with the use of a book eating parasitic grimoire magic is easily consumed and learned and is used to recieve knowledge and... more>> interesting pieces of lore from the soul fragments of the people who wrote the book. Even then this isnt an over the top power fantasy like alot of JP novels, all of his success and progress feels well earned and he struggles greatly to push forward leaving a satisfying aftertaste.

Highly Recommended! <<less

Well, I'll tell you my opinion about this story.

I have finished this story recently so my thoughts are a little bit messy but what I can tell you is this story is interesting. I enjoyed how the MC is struggling through enmity.

I won't say there is no flaw because that would be lying, but I cannot find any big mistake or big bad things to say for this evaluation. The story pace is pretty good, not so slow, not so fast but correct to me. The MC's behavior is pretty... more>> realistic, with a lot of thoughts about how he should behave, act, think.

For sure, this story is flirting with the harem side, but not too deeply neither. And his companions aren't that pathetic neither. The different Characters tend to act resistingly and their roles are not too bland.

There are some references to the real world but you'll discover them if you read the novel.

You'll travel through the world and discover how peoples think and live.

There is no fan service in this story, and I liked how the author has managed to create such a story.

Eventually, if you like magic, battles, deities, you'll enjoy this story. There is a little bit of fan service with the harem side, but this one isn't very prominent.

What I've liked less is the short story (only 400 chapters, I would have liked something bigger), some pieces of information not revealed at the end of the story, a better development between the different characters, and a deeper understanding of their life (the story is neatly focused on the MC, I would have liked reading more from his friends and on).

This is my last thought about this story, don't read this spoiler if want to enjoy it the best :
Spoiler

Something that made me somewhat sad is the end. I won't say it's a bad ending. On the contrary, the end is really good, but... well you'll see it if you read it.

So at first I thought the concept was nice, you eat books, you gain a power in a system like way, and as I was reading the first chapters, I thought what would happen that could actually make him eat a book, and when I discovered it was a grimoire, I was kinda disappointed.

Also there's like a system like thing attached to the grimoire which is weird cause it's not in a modern world or related to it.

Then the story, it's not really interesting. It's nice enough if you just... more>> wanna read something though, like I am the night before the final exams lol <<less

B+

If you're wondering what that rating is for, its for everything. Plot, characters, world building, writing style, powers, are all well executed. Nothing stands out but nothing drags it own either. You have a very consistent story that can hold you attention the whole way through.

Harem is ok but I really liked the mentor relationship (seriously why don't we get more competent long term teacher characters?). Politics is good (because it's ignored) and not all nobles are ignorant douchebags. Theo is a decent MC, hard to hate him.

Personal thoughts:... more>>
Spoiler

I thought it stuttered a bit in pacing after 'Pride' died but it still held my attention well. The first battle with 'Pride' was so amazingly done but it wasn't replicated in future fights.

It's actually an interesting plotline. But, it lacks excitement and seems a lil bit repetitive. The MC keep having a cycle of needs to be stronger > eat books/magic tools > practices > fight > finally realize that he needs more power. I just didn't have the mood to continue reading it.

For the first half of this novel, I really enjoyed it. I’m not one to critique a book about its world building, it’s character development, etc. unless it really is a tr*shy novel. As long as the novel is enjoyable or engaging to me, I’ll like it. However, the one thing that I could not get past is the whole harem thing. I understand this thing pops up all the time in Asian novels and most of the time I am able to look past it as long as the... more>> ones in the harem are strong, don’t hinder the MC, and the MC cares about them more than just being attracted to their b**bs or body. However this novel doesn’t do that.

The main character does not respond to their feelings at all and tries to stay almost “neutral” and “innocent” despite constantly being swayed to the fact that they are beautiful women.

Spoiler

On one hand, there’s Sylvia, who regards him as her very first friend and the person who she can form a mutual relationship with. He’s the only one who she can related to for being regarded as a genius (despite him not really being one because of his cheat grimoire method). But he doesn’t treat her the same way?? I can understand if he doesn’t want to reciprocate her feelings but he just straight up treats her like a random character??? Not once did he act like her friend and really support her that much as a friend, especially in the beginning. He would just run off and do his own thing and she would be perfectly fine with it after a little talk from him when he gets back. The one time he notices that he hasn’t been a good friend to her, it almost feels like he completely forgets about her afterword. I just... didn’t understand and it annoyed me a lot.

On the other hand there’s the high elf (who I’ve already forgotten how to spell the name of because we haven’t seen her in forever). She decides on her gender (which is a half-death for her if her partner doesn’t feel the same for her) because she regards him as her partner. It almost seems like the author is making this to guilt trip the MC into reciprocating her feelings. She confesses to him, and the MC basically forgets about it and has not a single thought about it for the half of a year that he’s gone in the East Continent. When he gets reminded of it when he’s back, he’s basically has an “oh yeah, I forgot about that” attitude and forgets about it again. Like dude, come on, this girl is confessing her heart out to you and all you’re going to do is sleep with another woman (we’ll get to the whole sleeping with another woman part with the next harem member)

The last harem member (although there are more women that lust after him) is the eighth circle tower master. Now that’s what I call a strong minded and physically strong women. But she’s constantly lusting after the MC as her prey. Like she was a little unneeded for that, and should have just stayed as a the strong, badass tower master who gives no shits. I love that the author doesn’t make her weak once she becomes part of the harem but at the same time she is not bound to him as part of a master-s*ave contract when the MC saves her life. Then immediately afterword, she pounces on him and sleeps with him? Like she’s fine for going after someone who she has feelings for, but the MC has a lot to think about regarding his other female relationships. He should be getting his act together, not sleeping with her.

[collapse]

Anyway, that’s all I want to say. There’s a lot of other problems with this story like how he’s regarded as the hero of Meltor but there are other magicians who are just as strong that have done things that are amazing as well who aren’t regarded as anything but strong. I don’t really want to rant anymore about this, so that’s all.

You can decide how you feel about Thai story when you read it, if you ever decide to. <<less

Tbh I have great expectation when I decide to read this novel but after chapter 300 I just wish I drop it. The plot is interesting but I still feel I waste my precious time reading.

Spoiler

For harem. MC have three wives. He married to high elves, half dragon and magician. The half dragon suppose to be older and strong but I think she's the most annoying character because she childish and reckless. She do not have character development at all.

I normally don't write reviews (takes away my time to read, you know), but I feel it would be a disservice to this story if I at least don't leave a review.

To be completely honest I think this novel deserves 4.5 stars, but I think 4 would be too little, especially after I read some unreasonable reviews regarding the story as 'bland' or with 'no world-building' or other ridiculous reasons (which I strongly disagree), hence the 5 stars.

The plot is simple but interesting, a young man who is struggling to... more>> become a magician and has no many options left for him until a 'mysterious' book (a grimoire) calls for his attention which is the spark he needs to become a mage and an unprecedented hero in his world. If I had to give a Super-short version of the story it would be that, but don't misunderstand, the progression of this story is what makes this story great and the fights wich result on a display of spells and quick-wittedness, and I appreciate that the fights doesn't drag too long.

About world-building I would say it has enough, it isn't something very complex, but the novel don't need it. There's the world, a planet like ours but with magic and other arts instead of science, there's a great empire which relies on warriors and something called 'aura', a magic kingdom which is where Our MC comes from, a religious country (based on divine (?) spells), all this on the West continent. At the East continent, civilization relies on shamanism instead of science, on another end of the world there's the ever-present elves with their love to nature. And at the south, there are swamps with ferocious monsters wich only the best warriors can defeat. And there's more and maybe some things I'm forgetting about, but if this is 'no-worldbuilding' I don't know what it is.

Maybe what this story would lack would be characters? But as this novel just have 400 chapters (perfect length in my opinion) it doesn' need more and the MC has consistent interaction with at least 10 of these characters.

Also, the protagonist is one of the strong points of the book, he isn't someone naive but he's neither ruthless nor apathetic, He always thinks before acting and is someone with a flexible mind who's always eager to learn.

But probably the best reason to read this novel it's because it is completed and with a definitive ending. Doesn't leave loose ends and the final fight is good with no-nonsense and doesn't end abruptly or is rushed (looking at you Coiling Dragon) and thank God the author included an epilogue so you aren't left with a void after reading and you have a sense of closure. If I have to compare it to something I would say it feels like when I finished watching Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Before dragging this too long, the only reason I would lower this score.5 stars like I said at first, is because there are some action scenes that are hard to imagine, not really bad, but maybe it wouldn't be so if author helps you with a little more detail and there's a certain character which didn't appear on the epilogue and one just mentioned:
Spoiler

Aquilo, the evil dragon which isn't part of the main 3 heroines but important regardless, was just mentioned. And the elf Ellenoa, had enough development before, however lacked an appearance on the epilogue. But at least the MC got married to her (he had 3 wives by the end btw, which I don't think is forced as some others) so I'm not too mad about it.

[collapse]

If you read to this point I thank you and expect don't leaving you too bored. Even if you're just mildy interested on some of the points I made or the tags of the novel, go for it, you won't be disappointed, especially if you like korean novels. <<less

As others have stated in great detail, this is a great idea for a story that's wasted by bad writing. It's basically a series of deus-ex-machinae saving the MC over and over and over, each time making him more and more powerful through minimal effort on his part. Everything is handed to him for free. He's rewarded for his successes. He's rewarded and never held accountable for his failures. For example:

Spoiler

He's losing against the Emperor, and one of his many not-quite-a-girlfriend allies is dying, so he releases the soul of a necromancer lord (he got the book holding it via an earlier deus-ex-machina) despite knowing that there was a very high chance that his own body would be stolen. The necromancer lord does in fact take over his body, wins the fight for him, saves the girl (sorta), and is then bumped out of his body by another deus-ex-machina. Convenient. Then he soul-bonds the girl to save her more permanently (ugh!) while the necromancer goes on to mu*der a country of 10 million people and eat both their souls and bodies... and he's rewarded for this! Later, the necromancer goes on to attack the allies he gained earlier, and despite this all happening due to the power of boners they still don't hold him accountable, saying that friends don't keep score and since he helped them out once or twice they'll forgive this existential threat that's entirely his fault.

[collapse]

I love the idea of the grimoires. I love the mythology. But the thick, layered plot armor is ludicrous. Everyone loves the MC, entire nations revolve around his actions, enemies scale to his capabilities, etc. and that makes the story feel pointless. Also, the geography is completely random. It's impossible to visualize because the northern, central, and eastern "continents" all seem to be connected, and the countries all abut one another despite supposedly being widely separated.

I was looking for a good story that involves magic rather than swordsmanship or martial arts. This has all three, so I guess it's what I was looking for (minus the "good" part), but the writing just isn't at the level that I hoped for. I'm more than 3/4 of the way through the story and I've lost interest. I don't really care what happens next because it's just going to be more "random epic loot is handed to the MC while he escapes death over and over by 'unexpected' interventions that don't really require much effort on his part." I gave it two stars due to the ideas in the story, and bumped three stars off due to the writer misusing those ideas. <<less

This is a very moderate and light read that I can best described as being very vanilla. There is pretty much ZERO edge to this story, it can very well be listed as PG-13. And you know what? That's fine. It's completely alright to enjoy a classic rise of a hero story. The MC is standard, upright good guy that doesn't give in to temptation, the kingdom he serves is full of upright leaders (this is probably one of the more unique points - the upper nobility of the kingdom... more>> are NOT corrupt and actually quite reasonable), he travels around fighting the good fight, helping good people and beating the bad guys. It is by far one of the most straightforward, vanilla stories I've read. And I liked it. <<less

I liked this novel. It's more like 4, 5 than just a 4. I don't give out five stars casually so it's the best mark I can give here.

It's a good story with nice plot twists that hooks you from the start.

Not a masterpiece, that leaves you breathless until the end and after, but if you want to read a decent quality novel, have a good time and make a journey with the main character, then this is a perfect choice.

I would only wish for characters to be fleshed out... more>> better (Veronica is pretty deep despite her personality imo) and more of the slice of life vibe between dangerous situations.

Some thougths about ending under the spoiler (Don't look if you haven't read till the end!)

Spoiler

I liked all the arcs except the one with Lust and Heavenly Demon, I just skimmed throught it because it was too boring and predictable. The last arc did good unexpectedly, a lot of novels about transcendents end in similar way and I don't really mind. I like novels like this one that don't leave you devastated with 'book hangover' and I'm glad that the ending was cute with a child and future.

Anyway, try it out, I hope you enjoy it. <<less

After finishing this series, I would give it a solid 4/5. The main character has THICK. FULL-PLATED plot armor, and the "coincidences" and "miracles" that saves him from disastrous atrocities are often at ridiculous levels.

Spoiler

Like how the souls Theodore gathers from original books somehow are important keys to solving disasters, how the sole element he has contracted through pure coincidence is the goddess Dmitri, etc

[collapse]

However, unlike other weak-to-strong fantasy novels, this novel does it BEFORE all the events happen, making the plot armor less obvious and disturbing to the overall story. This somehow makes the story enjoyable despite all the "miracles" that occurs, as during the actual action, the story flows as those "everything has a plan" kind of plot. Yes there are a lot of plot holes, yes there are logical and religious fallacies, but if you're looking for a solid but light power fantasy novel, I would highly recommend giving this a try. <<less

A fresh look on a magician combined with lore. The magician system is interesting until it becomes convoluted and nothing makes sense despite the grandiose naming. Alas it focuses more on humanity and emotions rather than being the discoverer of truth (magician), which is a good change of pace.

It started very good but after 50 or so chapters, the quality dropped :- (

The author, in an attempt to increase the deepth of the world (and more specificaly the power systems) went the wrong path :-s At first all was simple and clear, but because of that, the MC could only rely on Gluttony to gain power. And it seems the author didn't like that because he rapidly went for an MC who don't only rely on his cheat power (and he failed, 9/10 the MC rely on his... more>> cheat) and quickly add WTF rules uppon rules to let the MC gained power by himself through unordinary way.............

Furthermore, as of now the MC is all but OP (and I spoiled myself, the MC become OP at the last 8th of the novel). Someone should erase the overpower protagonist from the tag :-s

Spoiler

As of now, the MC has accumulated too much power (despite being at the bottom of the food chain..... sorry, at the middle of the food chain) too quickly. So he must train a new unknown power before to remain alive before continuing growing.

But our "intelligent" MC dicided to slow his trainning because he's all but not intelligent. He remembers very very well but don't understands half of what he remembers (almost all his power is based on understanding so he should be in deep sh*t but it seems that Gluttony misunderstood "remembering" and "understanding" because the understanding of the MC is very high for almost anything he read twice :-s And everyone said the MC is quick witted but it's clearly just normal deduction... If he didn't deduced this much then he would be qualified to be another dumb MC :- (Adding to all that, the MC is DENSE... He doesn't know what is love... Furthermore, the MC is a complete newbie who keep doing s*upid errors or non efficient actions but everybody treats him as a veteran -_-

[collapse]

It reach a point where I know thing won't go better and will keep getting worse so I drop here. I'm frustrated because it started very well. There are a lot of things which I didn't speak about but I only wanted to write about the main reason who made me dropped.

I'll finish on this, the novel seems to be logic but it's not ! If you started reading this novel with logic, you'll dropped earlier or latter. So read this novel without logic in mind and it should still be a 4 or 5 stars (I wanted to rate this much at first but my disappointment made me rate it at 3... If it's not 2, it's only because the start was very good) <<less

This story is definitely a good read for anyone out there that likes the weak-strong category. The story essentially starts the same as other martial arts/magic with a seemingly useless child of a not-so-well off family running across a massive stroke of fate. It deviates a bit from there, with a character that finally doesn't take crap from bullies on the basis of "protecting" his secret. There's a fleshed out system of levels, interesting spells, and enough comedy and romance to go around.... more>>

Even marriage for those of you who are tired of a one-sided one-dimensional dense main character who doesn't have the courage to do anything. The main character also understands the concept of people changing with power, and does more than his fair share of effort put in to protect his loved ones (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

A really good Story with small Problems. In many terms it's comparable to Naruto if you rip down the story to the ground (Grimmories are biju's and so on). The Story use the typical Fantasy settings with an world that is weaker than in ancient times where mana was everywhere.

All characters are well designed and show it trough action and not discriptions while bering independent enough to look real. The Story is while being straight not predictable (or at least not in a bad way) and the Grimmories... more>> with there goals are a nice touch. In addition to the fantasy style "old world was stronger" there are many hints that the former world was our real world mixed with magic that are well implemented.

The problems are mainly about the genres of this novel. As an example it have to much romance to not include this genre but clearly not enough to fill it because it's just basic and and so it will disappoint there. The same for Harem and OP main character (I like this weak to strong but not everyone like it). <<less

First of all, it is one of the few novels with a real ending. Thats a really huge plus point for me.

The plot of the novel was basically clear and it followed the plot with a few deviations for world building and so on, so I would say basically no or almost no filler chapters. Which is another huge plus point for me. ;-) Since the novel is pretty short (in comparison to other novels) there is also not really much repetition.

Well thats all I have to "say" without spoilering... more>> the story^^ <<less
