“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

Best thing I've read on this site, if it didn't have game-like mechanics it would be comparable to great high fantasy western novels. Fantastic characters that have interesting interactions and relationships as well as great world building.

Very consistent writing. A fifth into the novel and the pacing, world building, character interactions have been fantastic. A lot of likable, fleshed-out and realistic characters. Seol Ji-Hu is not overpowered and he paces through arcs with enough suspense and tension that leaves you wanting more.

I applaud the author for a very well-developed story so far and cheers to all the people who support this novel.

It's one of the best novels because it amazingly didn't drop quality so far, usually most novels start to have some weird pacing around this area of chapters like taking too long or too fast to be taken serious or maybe something like a drop of quality/consistency with characters. Yet this hasn't dropped in quality so far. 5/5 for me

In my opinion!!! This novel is more realistic, novels like 'i alone level-up' or overgeared (but I also like it) has a good concept but there many lacking of course I can deny that there's also lacking here. But when you read it thoroughly you can feel the that it's actually happening unlike others that you will feel 'THAT 'S IT!?' or the plot was invincible, force or the author put it then that expectation did not happen RIGHT!??

Can't deny to other's that there no lacking in there but to... more>> me it's perfect!!! Totally recommended to read!!! <<less

Never made a review before. Read close to a hundred novels already and I finally feel like it's worth making one for this. Give it a 8.5 or 9 out of 10 for now because of some story/world issues.

The Second Coming of Avarice is really damn good for a webnovel. It’s one of the few WN I’ve read that approaches a “real-published-novel” level of quality if you get my meaning. What separates this WN from the rest is the author’s exceptional character writing (relative to the popular Korean WN out... more>> there). There’s a complexity to the MC and significant characters that other WN simply aren’t even close to reaching. The way the MC changes through each chapter and their interactions with other characters almost feels carefully planned and events that happened in the past have significant meaning to character growth in the future (unlike many other WN, where the implied effects of early plot points were so vague that they weaken the links we feel between said early events and their future effects).

Like many WN, the MC goes through the tr*sh with OP benefit route. Unlike many WN, the MC’s ability doesn’t make them broken; it’s just a tool that lets MC make better decisions than most; his ability doesn't force him to go a certain way, he still has the ability to choose. His personal combat ability is impressive (not OP) and was developed through hard work, although a lot of good luck was involved. Thankfully, this means that the MC doesn’t just steamroll his way through problems. Challenges are actually difficult for the MC (lots of relevant life-and-death situations) because he doesn’t have broken powers. He has to think and react smartly to overcome a lot of these events (doesn’t mean there aren’t some BS moments; however, it’s still pretty early in the novel’s life and some BS is expected).

I feel that one of the best parts of this novel is the “flow”. Chapters are very long compared to most WN and this allows the author to start and finish entire arcs in a few chapters, keeping you in that “flow” state where you’re incredibly immersed in the story for much longer than most WN can. You don’t break suspense with a forced cliffhanger moment due to shorter chapter length and inception to resolution of min-arcs can start and end naturally multiple times within a chapter.

Conversely, the author seems to have a lot of trouble with world-building. I think our understanding of the WN world is quite weak right now. Admittedly, 90 chapters (the point where translations have reach currently) is pretty early into the WN’s life, but considering the chapter length, I expected a lot more world development. Honestly, not much is known of the Lost Paradise world outside of 2 or 3 cities/towns, a forest and 1 or 2 other areas and even these areas are sparsely described. There’s also little to no mention of the major enemies/species/countries in this world and only recently has the MC had any plot-significant interaction with said other enemies/species/countries. At this point, there’s no way I can imagine a layout or map of any part of the WN’s world in my head. Similarly, with weaker world-building, we also don’t have any understanding of the “real” conflict hinted at in the prologue.

Currently, it’s a little slice-of-life-like but with immensely good character growth/development and compelling suspense and action sequences. I really hope the author starts to consolidate and finalize more of the established plot points and start developing the story/world/characters in a clearer direction (they've been doing a great job so far, events make sense and follow each other meaningfully). It’s been a little “durdly” so far, but within the latest 10 or so chapters, I feel like the novel is moving in a better direction (the MC finally has some plot significant interaction with other species in the novel and the story is moving to a larger-scale stage). If the author can figure out what they want and manages to stick with it, The Second Coming of Avarice might become my favourite WN of all time. <<less

One of my most beloved novel.

This novel is at the pinnacle at expressing emotion.

the characters especially our MC Seol expresses his emotions that is realistic to the situation he finds himself in.

The story itself deserves 4 stars but chapters like "Chapter 43" and "chapter 89"

express how humanly a character can behave and can struck a cord in you.

Highly recommended.

Just read it.

A very interesting tale, with both an innovative power (that isn't OP in and of itself) and very good world building. I can't go into detail about all the ideas I like that are implemented into this, but I find it fantastic and I eagerly await each new chapter that is translated and released!

I've read many novels and this is the first time I'm writing a review. Why? Because this novel is really good. The plot is good with a foreshadow before something actually happen in which most novel is lacking. There are also occasionally a cliff-hanger but not too much. The conversation is very natural and funny. It contains a good amount of drama, comedy and action. Plot armor is always explained so it doesn't feel forced. MC is a bit childish compared to his age but he's funny, confident and very... more>> tenacious. The translation is also very good with a constant update. Overall, this is one of the best novel I've read. <<less

One of the best, great development from start to present. Only disappointment has been him being a bit less assertive in past few chaps, but it doesn't seem like it'll become a longtime trend. Highly recommend.

One of the best novels I've read. MC starts out as scum but slowly works to redeem himself and reconnect with his family. A bit like NEET Receives a Dating Sim Game Leveling System, but the "other world" element in this novel is a lot more interesting to me.

This novel has a ton of potential. After 60 chapters he finally gets out of the extremely long tutorial, and despite that it was a lot of fun. However so far the entire story he is basically being told what choices to make, he always has some boss or supervisor or contractor telling him what he can and cannot do. And to an extent, it makes sense. The situation he was put into near requires him to follow orders as he has 0 idea wtf is going on. But if... more>> the entire story is him being under the control of those around him, why is he the MC? The story even references the possibility of him becoming a corporate s*ave, so it would be extremely ironic if he continued to be a passive protagonist after choosing "freedom".

This is a very refreshing story, very high quality writing imo. The dialogue between characters is top notch, and the humor stems mostly from situations rather than characters, which I find to be a plus. Characters die, but not excessively so, there is a real sense of danger.

However the biggest gripe I have with the writing is this weird thing the author does where he presents this minor dilemma that will OBVIOUSLY be solved in the very near future in order to advance the plot, but he keeps baiting it out as if we as readers would actually believe him. Then a quarter of a chapter later its revealed to be solved and by the time you get to the solution you have already forgotten about the minor dilemma and you get metaphorical blue balls from the lack of satisfaction. Like no sh*t he is going to keep this ultra awesome item he found, NO he is not going to sell it. No sh*t he is going to help this person, WHY would he not there is literally 0 reason for him to not help.

And I say those things with annoyance, but it really is minor since that is literally everything I don't like about this story. Its a great read, better than 99% of the other stories on this site. <<less

I came here from The Novel's Extra. Here is my impression of this novel. It is an adventure story at its core with a heavy dose of action and drama. When I read this novel, I always had a sense of curiosity regarding the MC: what actions is he going to take, what plans does he have, what loot will he get, will he abandon this character, to what degree will his plan fail, etc. The adventure, action, and drama elements are executed excellently BUT the characters are the weakest... more>> element in this story.

Villains are unredeemable mustache-twirling, baby-kicking, "I AM EVIL" kind of characters; 1/5 boring, tr*sh characters but at least they are easy to hate.

Support characters have 1 core, immutable trait, and take actions based on that trait, their relationships, and their circumstance; 3/5 average - 4/5 pretty good depending on how much screentime a character has to be developed since more screentime=more complex characters. Many support characters are very endearing and relatable, but they will probably not change much over the course of the novel. This is just what I feel, but I believe that 99% of supporting characters will NOT be developed enough to be stand-alone characters because the point of supporting characters in this series is to have their personalities bounce off with the MC. As a result, I believe that they will only be developed to the point of being useful to the MC. This may explain why antagonists are so poorly developed. Antagonists exist FOR the MC which means that antagonists are not built to be good villains, but are ultimately built to be jobbers for the MC.
Spoiler

Let's take a certain trainer. She is introduced as a maid that assist in the tutorial process. This maid is strong-willed, and has the nickname of Sicilian Demon Instructor (or something similar). She is very harsh, and has high standards since she want truly strong transmigrators. She is also hinted to be a top-tier fighter, and can work with her peers. Interesting right? All the screentime is dedicated to reinforcing what I pointed out above. Sure, it does the job, but by itself, that is not a fully fleshed-out character. Her characterization is all related to her profession as a trainer, but I'm looking for characterization beyond her profession as the MC's coach. (After some brainstorming, some possibilities might be: Her private life, Her ideals/dreams/desires, Her preferences and habits not related to Demon Instructor, Characters she like/dislike for personal reasons and what would those personal reasons be)

I chose this character as an example because she is a good character that is ALMOST there in my opinion. I believe this characterization problem will be more apparent with other support characters.

I'm complaining about characterization less in Arc 3 because Arc 3 supporting characters are some of the better ones. However, characterization is one of this author's weak points so I'm very weary. I'm doubly worried since this is a long-running series, and for series like this, its easy for the author to get burned out, and stop being creative with ideas, which would be like a death sentence for interesting characters.
[collapse]

Spoiler

A counterargument for antagonists only being jobbers: Act 3's Alex (Investigative Priest), and Samuel (Pathfinder) are excellent characters. While they disagreed with Seol's decision during the looting, they had their circumstances on why they opposed our MC. These characters were technically antagonists at the moment, but they weren't 1 dimensional. Also, another possible exception is the shady organization "Sinyoung" that probably will conflict with the MC in the future, and has potential to be interesting.

[collapse]

The big fish in this story is definitely the MC: 5/5 excellent. He starts out as absolute human garbage that ruined his family, and his relationship with his gambling. He would probably do everything possible to get more gambling cash with not an ounce of shame. However, he gets a wakeup call from his future self, and tries to fix his life step-by-step while bearing all the consequences of his past. Each step along the way, the reader is with him, and we see his desires, his fears, his regrets, and his thoughts. If you cannot stand the MC, then you will hate this series.

The first arc is very "Korean Deathgame-ish". Human participants being thrown into a foreign environment, big powers easily killing said humans, some scary mascot character causing further suffering, humans being pieces of shit, etc. I most dislike this arc, and the reason why is because with exception to the MC, most characters are shit. In this arc, most characters are antagonists, and I learned in this arc is that the Author can't write antagonists for his life. Also, the MC is pretty distant towards everyone for quite a while so the supporting cast has no time to shine. In addition, because the brutal scenario gives absolutely NO agency to the characters, it is impossible to do any adventuring in this arc, and adventuring is this series' strongest point. If you plan to read this, my advice would be to pay attention to potential allies and skim over all antagonists since they are predictable as hell anyways.

The second arc is the Training arc. This arc is like a compromise between Arc 1 and Arc 3: a semi-structured, soft-survival environment with instanced zones to train in and do quests. If the ways that the MC tackles quests, his interactions with allies and neutral characters, and his genuine efforts to getting stronger are intriguing, then you will like this. Otherwise, if this arc falls completely flat for you, then it might be a sign that this novel isn't for you.

The third arc would be when he

finally gets officially isekai-ed

The Summary is bad. It is basically about an addict given a second chance by fighting in a different world while being able to come back. Unlike what most reviews say here, the MC is nice but not naive and he has interesting power. There is character growth, and while people say there is harem, it feels more like friendship (The MC has not even returned any feelings at all).

Spoiler

At some point it is seen that people in the other world become very liberal about 'relations' so that could contribute to the confusion.

[collapse]

A heads up, the novel starts with a scene from the future so it could get very confusing. Also writing/translation (I dunno) is kinda bad at beginning, but it gets better quickly. <<less

I think this book is perfection. It's harem but it is delivered in a mature way, all the women have a role to play. I'm gay and this might be the only straight harem I can vouch for it's quality and every childish Harem author should learn from this.

Everyone have different taste in picking novel. Some might like it and some might hate it.

So, let me description a few thing for this novel.

  • MC is a tr*sh that wish to change his life
  • Have harem
  • super easy to understand power level (level 1 [weakest] - level 10 [strongest]) unlike cultivation novel where many level with super hard/difficult name to remember the level
  • MC growing stronger but not genius/talent
  • MC been mistake as genius and strong due to he have special eye power
  • Reincarnation without memory (never regain that memory but can see short flashback only when condition met)
  • MC can use his past self power (cannot control the power until the end) and become super strong when he realize he powerless
  • sooo diligent and hardworking in training
  • very lucky and smart in planning (due to his eye power foresight) to the point, almost all his strategy in this novel are working (I said almost, not all his strategy)
To whose like OP MC, this novel are not like that in the beginning (CH01 - CH330) but after CH300++ MC start getting OP. Of course, since MC reincarnated, MC has a power to use his past self strength and become soooo OP but, not many chapter that cover that.

This is one of the longer Korean novel I read. I thought I was a Chinese novel but it's a great novel. I like how the author made the MC and how having a living being put on another would really change what they are it's a unique logic compared to other isekai novels I've read so far. I like how the author put a lot of effort in bringing a deeper emotion in the story how important family is and how it could change one memories are lost.

My personal favorite novel. This is saying a lot, since I prefer it even compared to masterpieces like Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, Kidnapped Dragons, and Lord of the Mysteries. I'm not saying Second Coming of Gluttony is objectively better, just that I liked it more.

I want to start with the character growth. Seol Jihu is a fantastic tr*sh protagonist. He's truly a garbage scumbag at the start. His future self only has enough contribution points to send back his undying emotions, which are enough to suddenly fill Jihu with a overwhelming... more>> sense of shame. With his entrance into Paradise, he throws himself at the trials that await him. One thing I like a lot is that Jihu channels his former gambling addiction and self-loathing into a terrible obsession with Paradise. It's the one thing in his life that he was succeeding at, that he could be good at. When he was back on Earth, he had to be constantly confronted with the painful consequences of his actions. Paradise is his escape, just as gambling was. Upon realizing this, he makes real efforts to grow and apologize and make amends. I like that it's not a one and done thing. The chapters where Jihu apologizes all the people he has hurt are so raw that they hurt to read a little, in a good way.
Spoiler

The trial Jihu had to undergo to become the Executor of Gluttony where he was forced to relive all his memories when he hurt all his loved ones was amazing and terrible to read.

[collapse]

And, everybody who whines about Jihu being a "beta" or weak-willed or other silly descriptors in the beginning is just self-reporting. In order for a story to be about personal growth, the main character must be quite flawed in the beginning. And, aside from the fact that alpha-beta mentality is a funny little made-up fantasy idea disowned by its very creator, not all male main characters must be an expression of "masculine" strength and power and constantly be in control and etc... There is room for a greater expression of traits in the web novel medium. It's not a bad thing to be traditionally "unmasculine", and that's assuming that Jihu even qualifies as such a thing. I see these kinds of people often, complaining about "beta" MCs in the reviews. What's wrong, unable to project yourself onto the figure of a powerful man as a form of escapism? Does someone not conforming to your gender expectations make you uncomfortable? Does it remind you of reality?

All that being said, I will readily concede the harem argument. I know a lot of people really dislike harems, and fair enough honestly. I personally don't really care that much if a novel has harem or not, so it wasn't a problem for me. Also the behavior of some of the women in Jihu's harem was... questionable at best and criminal at worst.
Spoiler

Yes, he does get r*ped by two of them. No, it was not warranted at all. It was messed up and kind of glossed over.

[collapse]

Anyways, on to the power system and scaling. It's good, other than the part where you lose your strength on Earth. That didn't really make much sense to me, but it's fine. This novel has a system, kind of. The system was designed by the Seven Sins, and can only make someone as strong as they are. The system will not help beyond that, which makes sense. Contrary to most system novels, Jihu trains very hard to become stronger and get his skills. He doesn't just get skills as a reward from completing a scenario or putting points into Swordsmanship on a screen. He works for them. Besides that, I really like that the power scale is completely consistent throughout the whole story. A lot of lesser, tr*sh novels will adjust the power level alongside the growth of the main character. That strikes me as the mark of a poorly planned plot. In SCoG, the number of powerhouses does not change, and we know all of them. The Executors of Sin and the Army Commanders are the top dogs. Since the power level is consistent, it is very satisfying to see Jihu grow stronger and challenge people he would not have been able to beat before. Also, Jihu uses a spear. That's really cool since pretty much every other protagonist uses a sword.

The main antagonist, the Parasite Goddess, is actually smart. That's why it feels good to win against her. She doesn't pull her punches, she knows what she's doing, and she loses. In cliché Shonen animes and mangas, the big bad would just send some dudes after the MC who the MC can beat and grows by beating. The big bad never seems to learn. Not here. The Parasite Goddess does not care about cliches.
Spoiler

She recognizes very early on that Seol Jihu is going to be a serious problem if he's not eliminated. She sends 3 Army Commanders to kill him, which is insane overkill. He only scrapes by with the combined efforts of several Executors, Baek Haeju, his future self, and sacrifices.

[collapse]
The Army Commanders are all individually extremely powerful, which is why it meant something that Jihu was eventually able to defeat them.

I just want to say that this novel is actually really brutal. I was thinking about it, and it does not mess around.
Spoiler

Jihu and Teresa have to resort to drinking their own urine to survive being stranded out in Parasite territory. Kazuki's sister has her innards replaced with parasitic life forms, and the parasites torture the other group members. Dylan gets his limbs replaced with parasites. Jihu sees a vision of the future where Seo Yuhui is captured and gets turned into a breeding pod for the parasites, forced to give birth for eternity, unable even to die.

[collapse]

There's a lot more I want to say, but it's been a while since I read the novel. My memory is a little fuzzy. Also, this review is insanely long already. Just go and read the novel if you like Korean fantasy novels. It's one of the best ones out there. <<less

I had finished reading it a long time ago, I'm going to type the review, based only on my memory, so something may not agree with the story.
-
1. Story ★★★★★ - Fantastic, in terms of the way the world and its system are, as well as the consequences & benefits that it offers.
-
2. Character ★★★★★ - I'm not going to lie, there are some incongruities with the MC's behavior, reading other reviews reminded me of them, but nothing that IMPACTED me from wanting to drop the... more>> work or something like that, most characters have their developments and their reasons to be following the MC, and even the part of the Harem that in other works is well played, here it is even well developed and it makes sense, the development of the MC is very visible and not played at all, obviously it has its comedy moments that are great even XD.
-
3. Enjoyment ★★★★★ - It was a great walk, I remember while reading, listening to music and getting crazy near the end of the work I was so hyped.
-
4. General ★★★★★ - It's a considerably long walk, but very satisfying, of course, because it's a Harem genre, it might put you off reading the review, but give it a try XD.
-
PS: NEVER TAKE IT TO READ THE MANHWA of this work, they cut TOO MUCH things from it, it's not worth it.

This was one of the early novels I read and I did enjoy it. I missed those days where I can focus all day about reading novels. Probably many didn't like this because this was a harem novel. The plot was good. The so called gods are not all enemies. Nowadays gods are the common enemies of the protagonist and its annoyed me. And whatsmore, most protagonist looks like sun Jinwoo or whatever, the protagonist of I alone level up; Solo Leveling. They even copy the style of dual dagger... more>> and they make their own guild and not joining any guild. One of the reason I like this novel was that. He uses spear and not some dagger thing, making it unique. The fighting style of the MC is focus on martial arts and not some magic crap like 'lightning strike' 'fireball', etc. I also like how the MC choose to have let someone choose him as her apostle? Or Saint I forgot. Protagonist now a days when a constellations or gods choose him as being his apostle or something, the protagonist will never do it because it will tie them down and don't want to be a s*ave. I like how the novel has no betrayal of gods or something. There are no need for that to prolong it. I don't understand how the mind those authors works lol. It may be funny I'm comparing this novel to novels these day but it's true. You can rarely find good novel like this one. It's full of system or dungen;Sun Jinwoo style and betrayal of gods. <<less

I'll be honest. I used to hold this novel in high regards. I binged it in a matter of days and considering the novel to have about 500 chapters, I would say that's quite a fast pace. Despite the large amount of dislike about the beginning chapters, I find it more refreshing than the other books that can be found on NU. As you can see, people love this book like how the Romans love their bread and wine. Unfortunately, this novel is not similar to wine and instead the... more>> complete opposite of it. The climax is one of the most lackluster fights I have seen in a story. Considering that most of the action revolved around trying to seize advantages, not just pure battles, this is hardly surprising. As the story progresses, the author starts throwing out nonsense like a guy with a free hugs sign at an anime convention when a bodybuilder wants one.

Major Spoilers
Spoiler

For example, the MC and one of his waifus have been left behind in enemy territory and need to survive in a wounded state with no supplies and an entire army chasing after them. To solve their dehydration problem, they decide to drink their own piss. I'm sorry what. Do the gods make you piss nutrients once you come to Paradise? Might as well never buy food as I have my infinite supply of it. Now one can consider that they needed some water to last them temporarily. However, they were on the road for an extra four days with no time to collect food. You're telling me that piss, that is very close to seawater, gave them four days of food?

[collapse]

I can deal with characters becoming op where they can defeat gods and make miracles out of thin air. I can not deal with characters losing their consistency.

Very Minor Spoilers

The MC has retired and is happily enjoying his life with his girlfriend. However, he soon becomes drunk and accidently makes his friend pregnant. No problem. He can just go back in time. But he soon realizes that he can not stop this from happening as this is fate... and starts to despair where he considers becoming a eunuch. If you don't like it so much then why not just never drink or do it in a secure place? Not only that, but he is fated to marry another seven women. This is canon. You can go the wiki and see for yourself.

Maybe you are considering whether to read this so it only seems right for me to try to help as that is what reviews are for. Can you find joy in mindless reading or do you treasure your time more? <<less
