Epoch of Twilight is another Apocalyptic novel with the trope of the cheat system for the MC. As usual, the MC is OP compared to most other humans. He won't contribute to the crumpling society or try. He won't give advice... etc. And he doesn't want to be part of society. The story so far follows the nomadic sequence that we've seen in all other Apocalyptic stories. About time authors actually tried something different, whether its base building, or in the case of this MC who like all others (doesn't... more>> want to be a leader) maybe join a city that actually survives. I'm beginning to think that he's a jinx. Wherever he goes, everything collapses momentarily.

You'll begin to notice that the author has a good idea going but lacks a lot of skills. He forces the plot to certain directions to create tension. For example as mentioned before, the MC moves to A, A is relatively safe, A collapses, MC has to fend for himself, I'd hate to call it rinse and repeat because the author has been trying to get creative, and I haven't finished the story yet. Another example would be the Mission system that sorta ruins the expectation from anything 1-MC receives hard mission, 2- he knows it can't be this easy since it's ranked B, and so do we, so he knows danger is around the corner. And of course a ridiculous inflation of mutated beasts' power that makes it seem as if the author is in some sort of bidding war with humanity. This inflation eventually inflates the MC's power and everyone's power tbh. There's a clear jump in power levels across the board in the middle of the story that isn't so subtle, and the author passes it off as if it's gradual or something.

You'll also find a very annoying habit for the author to ditch characters he doesn't know what to do with. If you don't have a use for them, DON'T CREATE THEM. Characters are less often forgotten, and more often dispatched in ridiculous ways, an unceremonious death, or even being ditched by the MC's group for ridiculous reasons. Like most of the Chinese webnovel authors (who are rarely ever good in my opinion) the author suffers from the Overprotectiveness of the MC's awesomeness disease. He removes all characters or being surrounding him that could take away from his shine, making everyone around him a helpless pup that needs his protection, mostly focusing on his harem members, which only makes the story more dull with the lack of any meaningful sidecharacters.

Speaking of side characters, their development is tr*sh, they act oddly, and their characters change from grateful to ungrateful really fast, and I'm not talking in their actions or talk, the author sometimes reflects their 'good' thoughts, only for them to be reversed 2 chapters later for NO reason at all.

This review is pending an update when I finish the story.

TL;DR: As usual, check your common sense and maybe half of your brain at the door. Just enjoy the cheap thrill, and wish for the best. It's somewhat better than G&D World. <<less

Story about a man who gets game system to survive apocalypse. He travel between places and try to fight his way through the mutant as well as behind the scene manipulators.

The story is full of gore and biological reference. Game element parts was big in early part of story, but wasn't that important in latter part of story. The story tone starts with MC who fight for survival and self. However, by the end of the novel, MC becomes more like a strict soldier on duty rather than selfish MC.... more>> He turned into a soldier who would discard his love for duty of mankind.

Early Romance is a harem with a lot of lust from MC. However, by the end, it is basically one of the tragedy.

Spoiler

At first, it starts with lust. It becomes love through mid-story. However, by the end, he eventually lost all interest in his wives. He had been on his own lone crusade against alien and on a mission to create living environment for mankind. His changes come from the fact that he kept evolving into "4-dimensional" being, which makes him lost all carnal desire and sense of kinship. By the end of story, all his wives passed away (except one) without seeing him for over 30 years. They all lived in a peaceful homeland, yet died with regret.

The only one alive actually sent him a message (30 years ago) asking about when he'll be home. She rejected to see him when he actually came back, due to how much he left them out. Afterward, she is never mentioned again (presumably they never reconcile until she died).

Basically it's a price to pay for MC, because he eventually lost all his sense of humanity and kinship. He didn't feel attached to his wives anymore after all these 4d war and evolution. In the end, he became a Godlike figure, but at the cost of losing everything that is important to his past humanity.

[collapse]

By the end of the story, I feel it isn't a good "tragedy" piece due to the fact that story tone was geared toward overcoming personal obstacle rather than a personal sacrifice for greater good. Eventually, MC lost his initial goal and turns into some machine that exists to finish the final boss. <<less

Luo Yan (The Protagonist)

Describes Human in a perfect way. He is sometimes good neither evil he just do what he can in a situation. He is mature enough to accept the fact he can't save everything not like other Novels with childish plots. He sometimes does something unpleasant but he never goes overboard he sticks with his principles. Also he knows when to back out and knows when to risk it.

The Plot and Protagonist Character Growth is very good I can divided it to 4 phases its quite tragic... more>> though

Pre-Mutation (System Inboard) -Still Weak but can survive and have good morality.

Mutation Period (System Inboard)
Spoiler

Early City [Before Reconstruction Area] -He hoards things, Plans Carefully and only thinks about his survival and those close to him.

Desert City[Reconstruction Area]-Starts to care about more people, instict to danger always followed.

Hope City [Reconstruction Area]Starts to care about human civilation as a whole (Due to Alien Invasion and their experiment that caused the mutation). His ability [strong physique & 4th dimension transition] is now starting to create cracks to what keeps him human.

short summary in hope city event

The alien decided to wipe out the human race with anti matter bombs. But luo yan had captured the spaceship and first stabilized the remains of human civilization to start the 6million migration of people to the spaceship he captured. They decided to go to barnard system

His Growth is too much that even having s*x is hard

[collapse]

Mutated[System not on board]Short story short they arrived at the barnard system and prepared for war against the aliens which they won by their progress on technology during their travel to barnard system.

The Humans beaten the aliens (Glassians) and wiped them out returned to their planet and became an interstellar civilization which became the overlord of the whole galaxy. 3000 years boi

During this phase luo yan became more god like his body can cause spatial distortion his existence is itself a threat to all 3 dimensional being so he excluded himself from all civilization. Which is a lonesome and a tragic ending for him <<less

This is a severely underrated novel. Before you all start criticising I'll admit that the MC has many personality flaws. I don't like the MC either but what I like is the world development and flow of the story itself. The author tried to be as scientific as possible in describing the supernatural abilities and technology of aliens. There are no mysterious qi or internal energy or other crap here, everything is described as a result of gene mutation (atlest it is theoretically possible). The technology introduced is also something... more>> we are familiar with but just vastly advanced (like nuclear fusion reactors, antimatter bombs, unmanned robots, battleships etc) or some scientific concepts such as fourth dimension and dyson sphere. Next comes the story itself, if an apocalypse really happens how the government reacts to it may be similar to the story (people are used to being governed, it's not easy for local warlords to rise up).

If you are purely for the apocalypse and space story then you will enjoy this. At the the same time romance lovers might at all not like it (If you want true love in apocalypse good luck with that). <<less

This is a novel where the MC is a complete jerk... A dirty disgusting pig who thinks only about keeping his harem women alive.... The MC uses everyone as chicken to be used as cannon fodder... The author is one of the most pe*verted people to have such imagination of gross things and gross situations... Totally avoidable novel.... I give it 0.1/5 for grossing me out

Great start and full of potential. MC is slowly struggling to survive and journey to become stronger. Then after chapter 500+ everything goes downhill. Author literally stop caring about MC or any of the side characters and started a sci-fi wikipedia. Chapter after chapters of nonsense science crap that nobody give a sh*t about. Whole story that start to become like a report/diary that tell how humanity continue their survival. Basically author just decided to end all the characters that he spend hundreds of chapters building up their personality and... more>> just discard them. Other potential characters that show such promising story and development was also discarded. Literally the MC lovers, kids (clones) and potential love crush were just discarded like nothing. Author should have ended the story long ago went the war was over, but instead he keep writing more sci-fi stuff and basically the MC now has zero personality. Replace him with a doll and no one would notice. MC barely say more than a few lines in a chapter or read like 5 chapters and there is still zero mention about him. <<less

What is happening to authors these days, the level system is so full of sh*t whenever he level up he gets 1 point for main stats, yes you HEARD ME ITS 1 POINT FOR MAIN STATS and 5 for skill that is so cheap system author has created that I lost the desire to read in the start. But I kept goin, the plot was so illogical to think - all animals except social animals (humans) gets op and powers while humans became their prey.. Duh... It could... more>> be ok if the system wasn't sh*t to begin with (he gets xp only from missions really what it is 90s video game..) I am really disappointed. <<less

Good for passing the time. Good translations. Info dumping in later parts of novel. Main female protagonist (not quite but that’s the impression) is something that I hate in this harem. Harem is kinda meh. The Jiang woman (main female) is a divorcee with a daughter and ex husband but author partnered her with MC. Incredibly bad decision. Daughter and ex husband was just casted aside with no other mention other than Jiang woman crying because she misses her daughter. F*ckin’ hell mate. Also, she likes to control MC’s actions.... more>> Remember, this novel is an apocalypse type novel, meaning survival of the fittest you, place your self first, if they die who cares. MC is powerful, actions are good but then this shitty woman will really say, “No! I won’t allow you to go it’s too dangerous!”. You think it’s just being caring? Think again if it kept happening all over the story. Other women are okay not much problem to me other than the Zhao girl being his dead bestfriend’s fiance. I hate NTR. I like my MC’s to b partnered with virg*n women. So back to the annoying girl. This shitty one always has a say on MC’s actions and he actually f*cking listens. Oh, she also minds the fact that MC has other women f*ck you girl you have a daughter. Oh, she also manipulated a potential harem candidate (even if the chance is very low) to be together with other man cause she don’t want to share with others. F*ck I don’t know what’s in this author’s brain to make this woman the leader of the harem could’ve chosen Wang Shishi with her bright and cheerful personality plus she actually is powerful. This shitty woman on the other hand doesn’t even became an evolved person, just a shitty police woman with a gun. With an ex-husband and daughter. So this is just a warning to all the will be reading the novel. It’s a good novel for passing time but if you have same preferences like me then you’ll be incredibly annoyed at how that woman behaved all out the story. I mean know you place girl you’re just a lowly woman in the MC’s harem. The lowest of the low. F*cked up <<less

When I read this, it reminds me of why I HATE harem-based novel. Its tolerable for me if the hero wasn't sperm-brained, but in this novel?hah.... more>>
Spoiler

Just in this chapter, the only beginning for things to happen, got me ticked off. The hero was in the moment of saving himself, but the first harem girl is being a nuisance and a hindrance. Normally, people would push her off or get angry or being harsh, right?but no. The fuking hare brained hero kissed her n indulging her IN RETALIATION. What fking retaliation was that, you sperm-brained author?!

so with that, I refuse to let myself anguished over this, and I quit this on just 6 chapters in. <<less

One of the funniest things about the novel is that MC keeps upgrading his knife skills while actually using a sword/sabre. The novel is actually not bad as the story starts from pre-apocalypse era before slowly transitioning into apocalypse era. A few things that irked me were how the system was poorly designed, the harem, and MC's character in general.

The beginning of the series promised a lot and was a very pleasant read to read until it entered the final stretch which was certainly not pleasant to read the last 100 chapters, it was forced and rushed, if I had followed the line to the chapter 400 would give 10 but still giving credit to the development until that part would give.... more>>
Spoiler

the author simply isolated the MC to live alone neither calling his dead wives nor before their deaths. Staying like that for all eternity, which was contradictory with the beginning of the character that is a bit of lust. The gruesome ending made me skip a few chapters to see the ending soon so I give it 2 stars at the end.

Not what I expected, but not too bad.

People reading this novel must be looking for post-apocalyptic sh*t so I'll be reviewing based on that.

You can really expect everything from post-apocalyptic novel in this. Apart from MC, I find world building and story very meaningful (My opinion)

It does have a good reason for disaster or should I say scientific reason? Unlike other s*upid post-apocalyptic novels with s*upid reasons.i find leveling system very good. I mean although abilities are random for every person everyone actually has to follow same path... more>> eventually. Author could have done better creating interesting rivals or other people with atleast remotely similar strength of MC.

Now coming to its cons. MC basically f*cks his wife's friend just after a week he dies. But hey she also f*cks him so it's okay since they are getting stressed and shit. He also f*cks a police woman after knowing she has a family. By this point you get his mentality that his d*ck is in his brain and it folows that way for rest of the story. You can't find a single interesting character in his harem. Apart from that there is typical women-are-s*aves in these times kind of setting. So you can expect r*pe, mu*der and r*pe again. But what actually thrilled me in the beginning and in middle is the unknown. From when he starts travelling with his group to reaching Human city, I dare say it's the best part of story. How he explores the strength of mutated beasts and how he explores his own power is exciting.

But it takes the fun from story when MC basically becomes a half god single handedly destroying enemies and eventually becoming a god atleast in our dimension. But silver lining is that author actually explains everything scientifically and shows account of how his character changes after actually becoming something different from humans.

My advice is to read this for story and forget about MC. <<less

So, I'm going to make this a spoiler, even if I won't reveal plot points.

Spoiler

If you like consistency and want things to make sense, then, I advise against reading this. The first thing that makes no sense is MC's weapon. At the start, it's a knife. He got it because he had a skill for KNIFEs! A couple of lines later... it's described as a a huge ass zhanmadao. Going on in the story, the amazing knife gets to transform in a machete, sword, lolipop, dragon and whatever you want.

The second thing to break consistency is the power level of creaures and MC. The ratings are light blue, blue, and dark blue. Every time the MC meets an enemy he can't handle, the creatures he killed earlier get demoted a level. The MC kills creature is of blue rank with no injury, then stumbles onto a creature so terrifying that he nearly pisses his pats. Of course he has to run away, that creaure is a super creature of BLUE rank, there's no way he can beat that when he can barely handle a light blue creature....+100 chapter in.... the MC kills dark blue creatures like taing candy from a baby and is stressed every time he sees a blue creature....I can't understand shit...

And lastly, let's not talk about how exp makes no sense. whatever he does or however difficult the mission, the same amount of exp is give... Worse still, the missions have grades that we have no idea how they work.

[collapse]

Some people may say that I gave if too low a rating for a dumb reason, but this really annoys me. It actually annoys me much more then the protagonist's personality (which is crap). If you want to make a story with game elements, you have to at least remember what you wrote in the last f*cking chapter. Imagine how fun a game would be if you enchanted your gear to +2 every time, just because the dev's forgot that you already enchanted it to +2 last time. <<less

Well, this is really an exciting and addictive apocalypse novel which is the best among the best, at least until the author change the novel from apocalypse into sci fi novel similar to Age of Cosmic Exploration. MC get a free space ship, then abandon Earth with fellow humanity.

I persisted but gave up at around chapter 100. Other reviews state MC is a scum but since I have only read that much I can't say for sure if he is. However I'm so much disappointed with the harem. Different from Xuanhuan novels, there's no annoying pests popping out of nowhere to trouble MC because of a woman... but the women around him are the ones annoying the hell out of me, and I can no longer stand it. I just realized authors who always write novels like this... more>> are damnable themselves because they keep on writing harem members and MCs as annoying creatures that deserve some good rounds of face-slapping. Btw, why write harem this way? If they are men, I don't understand why they desire to create characters that are worst than scums... Is it that enjoyable for them? It's not funny and I don't find it amusing. <<less

I thought this novel would be great after all the first chapter was kinda promising, but it kinda ticked me off when he did self-justification, when he could have already taken the woman as she was willing and yet he didn't then after that now that he is unable to imp**gnate he can't give her a son.

There are also a lot of errors in this novel like there are instances when randomness happen, and also how he suddenly become GODLY and poof he still can't do anything to save others.

This... more>> novel just sucks I mean there's no proper plot, for gosh sake they shouldn't have turned this into a harem if he wouldn't even become caring for his women in the first place.

PS : I can feel that this novel won't be finished, or if it'll have a dumb ending. <<less

Some people complain about the MC’s morals but the guy is not a hero and I think the author does a good job of portraying someone that is trying to survive. There are somethings to be desired about the MC’s love life but those are mostly personal choices. The main girls that stick with the MC all have very fleshed out backgrounds and are given depth which is much better than most novels. There are also no major loose ends or plot holes which is a major plus. All in... more>> all a great read and it gives me ender’s game vibes which is a book/series I loved. <<less

Interesting read, begins like most stories with thr MC getting a system albit a slower pace. Some may have found the exposition to be heavy but I quite liked a change that we actually flesh out the background characters a little more rather they just be harem member 1, 2, 3 etc. Relatively realistic personality but somewhat overly positive treatment from virtually all the organizations he was with, he became too OP too fast in the 300+ Mark.

Frankly the plot takes a nosedive after he essentially becomes a god. There's... more>> a weak attempt to show other more powerful entity but we really only get the 1. Who's never seen again anyway. Plot effectively ended at their war against the Glassians.

Worth a read if u are bored and just want to kill time <<less
