Normal human+ cheat system tries to find a unique way to beat those Noble, Demons, devils, ghosts, and monsters.

First few hundreds of CH is very good, but in the later CH the author destroys his own work.

Spoiler

-He is not a normal human.

-He is also noble.

-His main pratic is a conventional method.

-Also, waste too much time to enlightenment his skils.

- Too many dimensions/realm/world setup, make the reader confuse.

See, everything is opposite from early CH

Fairly balanced novel. There are pros and cons IMO, while following the same strict xianxia formula, with some tweaks so that it still feels refreshing. There are some major cons though, but your mileage may vary as I'm well aware that some people really love this kind of protagonist. Heavy spoilers in my review, do not read if you do not feel like being spoiled on some very important elements of the story.

Spoiler
    • The cultivation method is fairly interesting. Instead of actually cultivating it himself, his cheat is literally a Cheat Engine, that lets him directly level the skills he gains. How much level he gains, depends on how much resources he has on hand, and how much changes his body can sustain in one go. Simply said, his entire cultivation can be summarized as a) learn a skill > b) level the skill > c) once skill has been maxed, combine the skill with another skill to get a better skill. If this sounds familiar to you, then it's because his Cheat Engine was basically made to hack a mobile game in the first place.
The problem here is that the only effort involved here is to learn the skill in the first place so that it finally registers in the Cheat Engine to be leveled, and subsequently, farming the resources to level up skills. Once a skill has been maxed, his body automatically changes as if it has been retroactively practicing the skill until the level it is now, essentially skipping entire DECADES of training that anyone else practicing the same skill would have to do, to reach the same level. The hidden danger is simply that if he overestimates his constitution and levels something to the max in one, his body will collapse. Of course, this ever only happens once, and he generally levels stuff one by one ever since then so this danger is more or less non-existent.

Funny note though, and one very good tweak here, the body collapse issue here and the external force skills he practices, changes the MC into a big, bald, hairless gorilla more suited to be some mafia or bandit boss. The story doesn't bother hide this at all and very frequently notes that thanks to his lack of hair or eyebrows, his body builder size and his natural mu*derous aura, everyone around him is scared stiff of his presence alone.

Quite unlike a majority of the other novels where all the MCs are somehow super pretttayyy KPOP boys that can make even Sun fall in love with them.

    • The enemies here are one of the main tweaks of the story. There are no young masters, jade/plum/peach/heavenly ladies or Super Holy Ground #78230 which is a VERY good thing IMO. The even better part here is how the main enemies are essentially the ghosts/youkai or demons who are held in check by the so-called Ancient and Noble Families so that the mortals can go about their lives like normal people. The main premise of 300 or so chapters i've read so far is that the normal martial artists, be they solely internal or external force practitioners, or double internal and external practitioners, are completely useless against the first 2 factions.
The demons because they're..... demons, and the Noblemen who are basically still human, can match them because of some exclusive bloodline bonuses that sets them FAR apart from a normal human. This holds true until the MC, thanks to his cheat of course, completely disregards this supposed rule, blends skills around like they're cabbages from the side of the road and slurps them all down in one go, and voila. He's slapping both demons and Noblemen around like toys.
    • Character development. On one side of the coin, the character development, if you could call it that, is very obvious. In Phase 1, the beginning, he is essentially adapting himself to the current world. He still has his human moral values and cares about his family, such as his second and third mother. He even pauses for a few moments over his first kill to agonize and ruminate a bit.
In Phase 2, his moral values undergo a very abrupt change. He is still extremely practical, however he is a lot less moral in the sense that lives become less important and he can and will happily slaughter servants if they disobey even the slightest bit without any consideration or compassion whatsoever.

In Phase 3, whatever moral he has left is basically gone. In Phase 1 and 2, the overarching theme is ruthless, logical, self preservation, while maintaining some humanity and compassion unless someone steps over his bottom line. While the main part about ruthless, logical self preservation remains once he hits Phase 3 however, there is now very little difference between him and the demons he allegedly fights.

For example, near the end of Phase 2, when a big spoiler is revealed to him about how the Noble Families treat mortals/humans like livestock, and martial artists like himself as sheep herders at best, he goes on a rant on how humanity has pride and should not be treated as cows and sheep and vows to rectify this and place humanity back at the top of the food chain. Guess what happens less than 30 chapters later.

He doesn't exactly go around eating humans, but it comes very VERY close. The change is also again, very abrupt and may jar some readers badly. At that point, the self preservation part is pretty tenuous since he's already capable of fighting toe to toe with some Family Head level Noblemen, and he's obvious just doing it because he likes POWAH.

    • Romance.... Its there. It's not great, but it's there. I actually really liked his interactions with one character early on, but because of how the novel hinted that she likes to have orgies and has s*x VERY regularly, I hold very little hope that she'll be with him in the end given how Chinese people tend to be rather hung up on purity (Not racist, as I'm a chinese myself from singapore. My parents however, WILL freak out, if I even TALK to a girl that they THINK is not a virg*n - Thank you gossipy bit*h aunt from across the road).
His actual wife so far on the other hand, is a completely normal human, ironically. The only reason they got married, was because the VERY FEW scenes she appears in, she's basically being super persistent and dedicated to him despite her complete lack of power. She doesn't know he's a mafia boss however, and outright proposes to him. This somehow tugs at his heart strings, and he finally agrees to marry her. That's all. This does not change the fact that his feelings for her are essentially non-existent, or the fact that she still only appears in the story in one or two paragraphs, every 50 or so chapters.

i liked the spooky stuff, made it different and more interesting in the beginning, but this is mostly a typical cheat cultivation novel with a fairly typical ruthless MC.

in the end my attention began to wander, a lot, and for the past 25 chapters I spent more time staring at the cover and wondering why it was a picture of a skinny flower boy with pretty long hair when the actual MC is huge, has all these hulking muscles, and is bald (even his eyebrows were burnt off and nothing,... more>> not even stubble, has grown back since). Does his body change somehow later in the story or is this a case of inaccurate cover art? Inquiring minds want to know. Since I'm not a fan of overly big muscles the more the guy bulks up the more grossed-out I feel. I think we're supposed to admire his manliness or something but ewwww.

maybe I'll try coming back to it later but I'm done for now. If they'd spent more time on the spooky and less on the bulky I'd probably really like this story but as it is, its just average. <<less

This novel is just a stereotype chinese novel with some twist about martial artists and other class of people.

It is indeed going to make you quite interested because of the said twist with the constant anticipations and thrill from the semi-horror-like events at the early chapters.

Unfortunately, despite having what it takes to hold reader's interest, this novel wasn't spared from the cancer of chinese novels, the thrill and anticipation also got old so quick after the revelations and became not too interesting afterwards.

The MC was a man from the modern... more>> world who was transported to a different world, it was surprising that he suddenly fit in to the world perfectly by being a hypocrite arrogant young master.

First he doesn't get affected much if a family member dies or turn half brain dead. However he suddenly became so emotional when a family member got imp**gnated and abandoned, he even went to drastic measures just to save his family's "face".

There's also the fact that he is very blood thirsty, arrogant, and unreasonable. But then he was hypocrite enough to "not be similar" to those people who doesn't value other people's life when he's in fact, already similar to them.

Other than that are the usual chinese stereotypes such as arrogant young masters and too much focus on "face" among other clichés.

There's also the issue about a lot of characters that you thought were important are suddenly forgotten, or some of them just die without much importance, mostly just lazy collateral damages.

3/5 for being able to give that thrill and anticipation to the readers, sadly there are also too many bad and inconsistent parts that lost it some stars. <<less

Okay I gave it a good go and stop where the translation seem to be dropped.

It started off pretty well, then around the time when MC join a sect and fleeing from war things start going haywire.

Everything turns to super power up and besides one guy every other characters get left by the way side. Some anticipated reunions turns into very simple Hi and bye greet.

it starts going random in different directions, the travelling of the worlds and MC cultivating 100000 different things every 3 chapters. Things keep happening, MC... more>> forced to level up time after time, just became a vicious cycle. MC has no goal but to level up to beat his stronger enemy who show up to just give him new level to reach.

I did find some worlds fascinating, but that's the only thing that's good about it. The story has alot of interesting elements like Ghosts and supernaturals. They were more of the driving force earlier than just we just didn't care about it anymore. MC fighting ghosts earlier was way more interesting than now adays simple one move squash everything. Also I can't figure out MC's personality, you can't say he's s*upid but you can't say he's super smart even though he work on codes. He seems pretty rash and ill temper sometimes. I don't hate him but I am not really attract to his character in a way. I find him acceptable for a MC.

This is a good read to pass the time, I am not obsess with it, hence I didn't finish reading it. The only thing I care about that was left was

What happen to his son

Antihero Protagonist????... Evil Protagonist??... haha.. none of this personality have in this protagonist. He just a man who fight for living, using his own cheat ability to survive in this barbaric world.... he's too have a heart to help the victim at that world... but what more important than your own family and your life??..... read Lu Sheng journey to be the ruler of the evil and the self-proclam justice in this world.... even though MC have power to protect the innocent..... he don't do that.... its like cycle of... more>> life.... it will never be enough... all you can do is protect youself
Spoiler

If you guys want to continue read a apathetic/ cold/ antihero MC.... don't read this novel when over 200 chapter. It not worth it, MC will become someone who know to use his hands rather than his head. typically like other Xuanhuan/ Xinxia novel MC...

The novel starts off with a fairly unique world setting. The MC finds out that he is born among mere mortals that stand no chance against the innate powers of the noble families or devils, and there is seemingly no hope of overcoming this gap. Unless, you have a cheat skill that allows you to achieve what would normally take hundreds of years of cultivation in a matter of months. The novel soon falls into the same rhythm as most xianxia and xuanhuan novels, the MC meets a strong enemy,... more>> manages to barely survive, vows to get stronger, defeats the enemy, rinse and repeat ad nauseam. Unfortunately the characters aren't too interesting, the MC's motives are just overdone, and the background story is almost non-existent. <<less

This novel is one of those hidden gems on webnovel. It's always in the 40's ranking in webnovel when it should be in the top 20.

MC transmigrated to another world and for some reason, became a neutral anti-hero type of person. He only did things for his own gains to survive, and then his family as secondary importance. Only when people unconditionally helps him first will he reciprocate. He quickly becomes strong in the beginning due to his cheat that could level up the skills he learns at a cost... more>> of using up a resource. But the speed of his strength will eventually slow down at higher levels, albeit him still being much faster than the world's inhabitants.

The first 100 chapters or so reads like a horror genre, but will then move in the direction of a typical novel where MC wants to get strong at all costs. Once he reaches the top experts level, MC will keep finding out there's actually stronger beings out there and we see him grinding away again. There's some boring arcs but most of the novel content is quite interesting. I highly recommend this! <<less

This is one hell of a novel. It starts out ordinary, a weak person in a tough world trying to make it out alive. Most things about the story is average, average plot, average premise, even average plot armour. The thing that stands out about it is the character development. Though it is never directly addressed, the MC turns from what is supposed to be a normal person into what can only be described as a psychotic killer hell-bent on getting his way. Truly, reading this up to this point... more>> has me creeped out. His first kill happens quickly after he transmigrates, and while there is some apprehension to it he isn't all that bothered. After that it seems to become his go to method. Someone he doesn't like? Kill them. Want something from them? Kill them. Want to deter people from going against you? You guessed it, kill them.

While I can accept an unbalanced MC the part that got to me the most is that it isn't talked about anywhere in the novel. It's almost as if there's an undercurrent of lunacy throughout the whole world, making this seem normal. To provoke someone in the sect that he's in, he beats their granddaughter to near death to draw them out. The excuse that the incident falls back on is that she called him out first, with only words mind you, so he is in the right to basically disable her for life. The disturbing thing about this is everyone seems to accept that as a valid reason, grandfather and all. Many instances like this happen, where he goes above and beyond to achieve his goals, regardless of what that may entail. This is juxtaposed against other scenes where he acts like a normal person, kind enough to release a hostage, generous enough to take in two beggars off the street and caring enough to help his subordinates in their cultivation. All of these actions have an ulterior motive underneath them, which no one else can see aside from the MC and the reader. It feels like we've been let in to the mind of a manipulative manic, and it really is unnerving.

Don't get me wrong, you won't see most of this until you're into a decent chunk of the novel, and even then only if you're willing to look between the lines. It isn't terribly well written, and it's certainly helped along by a bit of hero aura. Though the starting elements of a good horror are there, the story doesn't focus any light on that at all. If you want it to be, you can see it as a man who changed because of his circumstances. <<less

This is a great story to read.

A lot of power systems and a lot of worlds.

The MC is a cunning person, always hiding his power and pitting his enemies.

Multiple Realms, fast and interesting cultivation methods + handy 'cheat'.

Romance is suck, and the main character himself doesn't seem to be interested in woman.

Mystery!!

The cover image is tr*sh but the novel is very good, unlike most other cultivation novels and also fantasy novels in general, this author knows what makes fights fun and knows that too much fighting gets boring, so he spaces fights out reasonably well with relationship development, world building and cultivation.

This novel actually deserves only a 4, because it has a few inconsistencies and also things that aren't explained properly, I'm still giving it a 5 because there are too many novels much worse than this one that have much... more>> higher ratings.

The novel has horror themes, mainly on the earlier chapters.

Spoiler

There is a drop in the enjoyment of these aspects when the MC get's strong enough to deal with them, but it's still refreshing.

You might not like that the MC from time to time kills with little reason, in other words, he's ruthless. But one has to understand that he simply won't hesitate to do bad things when that would help avoid trouble down the line.

[collapse]

Also, around the chapter I stopped reading at the time of this review, the author keeps writing some really bad and filler-like happenings from the point of view of minor characters, it has not payed off so far, and I have a feeling that it never will and this is just a low point in the novel's quality, I recommend just skimming over these parts.

My last complaint is that sometimes interesting characters get a backseat, but since it makes sense when it happens (i.e. When the MC is far away from them) I find this to be minor, although I would like more interaction with the various characters, that takes a back seat to the fighting and cultivation. <<less

The best part in this story is the world building, how it slowly unravels the world and its unseen face. You can empathise with the MC as he gains power and learns more about the world as a mortal in a world where mortals hold neglegible power.

Words don't do justice to this one so try it and stick to it until MC starts gaining power and you will get hooked.

It's a little boring.

Spoiler

MC is overpowered pretty much. You can guarantee that he will win all his battles, kill people whether they deserve it or not, etc. The characters aren't very fleshed out. It's not a bad novel to kill time with. Needs more world building and character growth. I like the ideas of cultivation, ghosts, demons, cheat system, etc.

It is not bad. Not great either but still not bad.

My 2 major problems with this novel is actually some weird problems (in my opinion).

1st. The time is f*cked up. I have no idea how long stuff takes and it feels like you jump back and forth in a timeline. You get told something is supposed to happen within a certain amount of time. And then all this other stuff supposedly happened before it. I have no idea of how long ''some time passed'' is supposed to mean in this... more>> novel. Could be minutes, could be months. This problem is also linked with my other problem.

2nd. It is full of random encounters and actions. Like we have encounters that are no longer then 5 lines of text. It wasnt so bad in the first 30-35 chapters because of a well created community. But then the community changes and it all feels like one big random event. I honestly dont know what the f*ck is going on anymore.

These are my major problems. Of course there ar good things aswell. Like the characters, world, cheat and some relations. Ther are also more bad things then just the 2 problems. But those are common with the genres and almost to be expected. Like plot armor and no real connection with his previous life other then his cheat. <<less

The first 300 or so chapters is really unique. The MC trains martial arts, with the help of the system, in a world where martial artists have a level cap. The really strong people have special bloodlines and only they can combat the evil forces that hide in the dark.

Then the author gets ambitious with dreams of thousands of chapters. It's still readable but it gets repetitive and endlessly increasing power levels. And then translation stopped. What can you do...

This is extremely good, the arcs has different themes each time, ranging from horror, mystery, martial arts, school life, mecha, world domination etc (not joking, it may seem out of context if you're new but it all smoothly connects later)

The MC 's power up is very satisfying, and some fight scenes can be humorous sometimes. It should be called the Way of Brutalizing Ghosts instead.

Spoiler

MCs form was definitely scarier and more badass than the ghosts, even ghost would be scared, some even cried lol, and he indeed brutalized some of them (they're immortals anyway, he has no choice)

[collapse]

And I also like how the author completely discarded the MC's humanity later on lol, he's literally a beast in human form. All this time I ignored the title and treated it like some click bait, didn't expect he'd transform into one.

Spoiler

The ghosts in earlier chapters would seem like cute rabbits compared to creepy form of the MC, even devils were baffled and wondered if he was a human. Meanwhile the MC is in denial, defending his humanity while having a crocodile snout, dozen of horns, multiple pupils, scales, sharp claws, spikes, a tail, and 20 meters tall body... and by the way, the mouth is as flexible as a snake's maw and could swallow dozens of devils alive

[collapse]

The characters are all memorable as they often recur in the story.

Spoiler

There was this character (I forgot the name) who went with the MC to hunt ghost, they got separated and both entered a different trial, turns out the guy and his companions encountered the MC as the last boss and learned his true form because they got thrashed by the projection. After several chapters, they met again, and the MC was wondering why they were afraid of him lol

[collapse]

Spoiler

He once dealt with an opponent and revealed his true form, a person witnessed this and peed his pants, more scared of the MC now than the assassin lol

[collapse]

In the dimension travel arc, the worlds are interesting and have different kind of power systems. The MC uses his cheat to gain advantage and he becomes something like a final boss in each world.

Overall it's a good story, defintely better than generic xianxia novels. There are no arrogant young masters whatever, and although the theme changes abruptly in the latter chapters, it was written and executed well, so still remains interesting despite the sudden transition.

Because there's always something new, I never got bored reading it. <<less

I had great hope for this at the beginning because I was told it was almost as good as reverend insanity (not at all), but I'd still say this is not bad amongst the cultivation novel I read : original way of cultivation I guess, and the horror like theme was very good at the beginning. Seemed quite good at the beginning but got worse as I read on. Sometimes the MC is describe as if he act quite cleverly while he's just plenty dumb which gets on my nerves.... more>> Things I don't like: the MC and his decisions and attitude. He considers lu family as his own when he just transmigrated and had no bound to them when he arrived he said it " they're just a tool" it changed so drastically in a few month. His gf has great body that's all if author can't write good romance then just don't because it only bring down the quality of the novel which is unfortunate. Fights are like this at some point :HULK SMASH repeated x number of time till enemy is defeated. MC doesn't even use his power well and the thing about using techniques (like Saber mastery) disappear and it martial arts only appears as some kind of magic instead of mastery of weapons/fist like in the beginning

The side characters are unrealistic and seem s*upid for people that should have lived for long and thus have some wisdom (at least more than Mc) . Like no one is suspicious of him and they even try to find him excuses

The lane that I remember the most and I found ridiculous is '' Here people aren't as scheming and cunning that on earth, they value way more honesty and loyalty" something like is obviously nonsense and a generalization of all caraters, Only Conveniant because the MC wants to raise subordinates, I don't really get why since his growth can't be matched by them and the MC is starting to be like 'I need to get stronger to protect my people'

I didn't like the way things developed so I decided to drop this I do recommend reading the first chapters but not the entire thing <<less

@edit chapter 635 -> 697, April 15, 2020

Let me get something straight: no, this novel isn't similar to WMW. WMW is tr*sh, I don't get other reviewers' trains of thoughts. I guess they have only read a handful of novels to draw such comparisons as MCs are different as well and there's totally different feel to it.

This novel doesn't cease to amaze me. I keep returning to it every year for dozens of chapters but haven't updated my comment for a while because they were only okaish. But these 60... more>> particularly were TRULY amazing. You can ignore whatever I've written before. This novel is a GEM, a masterpiece and the best work of these authors hands down.

MC's personality takes a turn for the better as well (he isn't monsterish like in these 200-550 chapters anymore and doesn't mu*der for petty reasons), it's a well written character growth and development. It somewhat resembles that of The Wizard World now as it gives a similar amazing vibe to it starting at about 664 chapter (if you remember the state of MC right before Wizard World invasion then you know what I am talking about).

Also, I am pretty sure the author plagiarized that one particular scene of Er Gen novel or some other xuanhuan novel - he made a copy of that little arc where the MC lived a normal life to experience reincarnation cycle from birth to death to achieve a breakthrough; also beautifully done as it made me shred some tears.

I am a big fan of these authors. Am reading Nightmare's Call daily even now, but it feels like Mystical Journey: remade and both can't compare to Way of the Devil.

I have read 863 novels as of today and I barely find anything worthwhile, so I am glad that at least there's something like Way of the Devil to make me satisfied. This happiness is almost nonexistent nowadays... even among the current trial novels.

Btw. MC got thrashed by some enemy powerhouses with words that it's his 'secret' that makes him so strong, he denied them in hypocrisy but a few chapters later he is curbing his 'cheat usage' addiction hahah and now if new world's gods put limits on magic or cultivation he's justifying himself that he is forced to use the cheat hahah this is actually cool he reflects on his cheat :D

---------------------------------------------------------

The novel would be a masterpiece if not for certain stuff. Still an amazing upgrade to Carefree Path of Dreams. What's good is that MC's not the center of the action like in many novels and his enemies can be wiped by other forces who aren't allies; characters have their own personalities and feel fresh; this novel doesn't put labels to people (e.g. enemy = blood feud, beautiful woman = fairy that can't be touched), there's a lot of mystery surrounding the world and even a side character with a plot armor so much thicker than MC's cheating device exists and brings a light air into the plot sometimes. But as chapters go on, about 200 chapters in, two things really start to bother the usual reader:

Spoiler
    • personality of MC: I bet even he himself totally forgot he's a human and what he tried to achieve when he was weak.... at this point he's no different than people he wanted to get rid of and who sacrificed human lives and so on, even worse, his total disregard for lives is disgusting and at this point makes him a hypocrite, a twisted evil who only cares about getting stronger; he's quite unlike WMW or Reverend Insanity MC's)
    • story: from somewhat apocalyptic-horror story with super powers, which was super enganging to read (MC was in the dark just like we were about the world and it was thrilling to explore the world's supernatural with him) it went downhill to a MC hungry for power-ups and massacring random people in all kind of worlds; it took a whole different turn and has different touch to it
      [collapse]
That ruthless personality of MC slightly recovers though, but still, remember that there's no black and white in this novel. <<less
