Every drop of this family bloodline is stained with sin. They are the embodiment of contradiction; calm yet maniacal, with great memories yet often forgetful. They pledge themselves to their dreams yet often compromise, are angels that are also devils… It’s why I hate them. And also love them.

The only hope of his family, a youth with the blood of elves and demons walks on a battleground of annihilation and rebirth. He wills his way through boiling lava and icy depths, killing on this field of despair to strike down the lofty figure in his sight. One day he’ll grasp his blade tightly and survey his surroundings, only to find no more enemies to kill.

This novel is awesome, I really recomend it.... Great world background (there's mage and warrior, whole kind of race like dragon, elf, orc and dwarf), great story (even the prologue is great, but it's a journey story from weak to pinacle one with a whole lot of obstacle in it)

Pro :

    • The ending is good, I like it. I previously thought that the ending will be sad or even tragic, but thankfully it's not
      Spoiler

yes, it's not all around happy especially with Flowsand, but considering the sad/tragic theme in the whole novel, it's already a great ending

      [collapse]
    • I like the journey from weak to strong, the knowledge building on learning rune
    • I like that the author create some mystery on the beginning that be answered on the near end of the story
      Spoiler

like the book of eternity, the gaton's fate, Faust,
      Alucia, and many more

      [collapse]
Con :

    • The theme from the novel is a too sad / tragic... endless war and misery... and not suitable for everyone. Of course there's happy or warm scene, but even the battle victory is mostly tragic (or has some sad price to get it)
    • Poor Mountainsea and Waterflower and everyone else even Flowsand, well bassically all of her lover except Sharon. Because they suffer so much and the MC did not give the justified appreciation due to he always busy (yeah I know he so busy due to the story plot, but what the hell... fells sad of them)
    • Book 9 is kinda rushed. Because it leads to the end and answer most of the mystery of the novel, it somehow feels rushed with only 146 chapter. Imagine that the journey is 8 whole books (with each books has 100-200 chapter) and it all be ended (and explained) on this last book
    • I still doesn't get it why the life & death planar battle keeps ocurring in this book or is it just the nature of the world?

City of sin? Yeah, you can bet your balls off its a good read.

The novel explicitly tells a story of a world built for conquerors. Families, political views, religion and even their system of social hierarchy points on military power.

The novel brings quality approach on how it tells its story for its world building, character development, conflict. Ofcourse there are things that that comes with a price for the novels quality. Lets start listing what is great and not for the novel.

... more>> The bad.

Arguably rushed ending. It feels like the author could have explored more of what was left, but it seems that he didnt. Simple as that.

Unexplored plot lines. Connected to the rushed ending, there are things left behind that wasnt explained. Arguably, since the story's setting is a vast collection of unknown universe / realm its acceptable not to know everything as a reader, but if you do finish the novel you may ask those questions as theyre left behind.

Fandom. Yes, the fans of the novel is toxic. (I guess every fandom is...) They may treat the novel as their Bible / Manifesto or whatever. Cant really blame them though, you may feel invested on the story too...

The good.

The Plot. Its coherent, the novel tells what you do need to know on a setting where people conquer other people on a vast unknown universe. The ups and downs of the story is relevant to the whole experience.

Character / Character Development. The MC, side characters, love interests, and atagonists are very well written and doesnt come as a package of your clichè pictures of train > get stronger > win = wash & repeat scenario, or the young arrogant master who was offended by the MC. Other characters growth or relevance in the story are tied on being in the right track on how the MC interacts.

Limits. The novel gives off a line of distinction when it comes to power levels to prevent the description of saying, "The gods and devils weep as the author has to fill his word count and ass pulls for the MC". I really appreciate this. Even at the ending where he can be considered OP he is being subjected to a proper limit, which is nice.

Verbatim. This is actually one of the tropes CN authors fly their brains out to think. There is a real conversation in the novel. The way characters say their pieces, or how their personality is described is perfectly presented on how they talk.

This is really quite good for the antagonists as the usual content of what theyre saying is a copy n paste "You dare to offend me?! -- 1 dimensional arrogant antag" isnt present in this novel.

Other mentions.

Usually the typical rant of these ameoba-brain edge lords who think theyre the protagonist in the novel, is the love story or why the author has the guts to discard a character.

Though its undesirable, the story needs to have these conflicts to get in track of what was described for our MC. It can be pictured as something that may leave a bad aftertaste on how the possibility of using these characters arent fully explored. But...

From what I can tell, the novel relays a clear message of we cant always have all we want even though we have the option to choose it.

There is a price, an offering... for everything you get.

What can I say for City of sin? It can be considered as a landmark for CN novels. Should you read it?

Yes, its definitely a yes.

This novel started off great. Then it got to the middle to late stages of the series around late V5. The women in this novel are written terribly, a tragedy happens to all of them, in some form of another, not a single woman is saved from this. And while some people may like that seems like a life with random chance or refer to it as fantasy so anything could happen, it is just really bizarre. Every woman falls in love with him or hates him. But they all... more>> suffer. This author has problems. Aside from that, the magic system was taken straight from DND even some of the lore. <<less

The plot is fairly good, however I do have a few pet peeves:

SPOILERS CONCERNING END-GAME OF THE NOVEL, BE WARNED.
Spoiler

So much character death that eventually winds up making the readers not bother forming a connection with most characters added as most likely they'll just be killed off to make the MC angry.

The MC is almost needlessly bloodthirsty - A single mistake and you're decapitated, even if you're a soldier following orders that really don't have much impact and are understandable.

Flowsand leaves him for a few years, yet for her it's 3000 years? Died then resurrected as Nasia.. Erm. How exactly does that work?

Melina gets her head blown up right in front of him. By an enemy that is fully aware of what he is capable of, knowing he is just egging him on by needlessly antagonising the leader of the invaders. "You will die!" The MC says. He runs over to find they moved bases. He then leaves the plane, never again running over to enact revenge, leaving it to someone made by the broodmother.

MC is at times cool, but most of the times he's a dumb, uncaring and egotistical maniac that breathes mu*der. Seems to me that all the 10 years spent with his mother were for nothing, really.

Selects someone to be his partner just so they are bound to serve him for years until he decides to procreate with her. Has no actual concerns with leaving his pregnant wife in a plane where there are a ton of people who hate him and have the power to kill her.

The brainlet doesn't think anything through, relying on a zerg-like broodmother to overrun enemies and have complete and utter co-ordination. Doesn't think "Maybe a machine of war and planar destruction should be a bit more treasured".

Mountainsea - Goes through such lengths to not even touch her again. Hello?

Rosie - From what I remember, she quickly turns into his personal rune factory. He completely forgets that she spends decades huddled up in a plane if he only spends one year outside of it. She has barely any social interaction at the start. Why does he forget about all these other partners of his until a year later? He goes through such lengths to rescue Flowsand, Mountainsea and Sharon and yet Rosie, Coco, hell even Macy and Lina are just thrown aside?

Why was Melina killed? The could've used her as a bargaining chip. Why would the supreme leader continue provoking the person who singlehandedly destroyed multiple tribes of elves out of rage?

There are many things that anger me about the ending; the lack of interaction between Sharon, Mountainsea and Richard for one. You just went through the void, risking life and limb, fighting your own father, defeating hundreds of Archlords to rescue her - You aren't a single bit surprised about her having a daughter that is protecting her, nor do you spend a good deal of time with her.

Mountainsea - Forgotten the moment she was saved. Simply sleeping and doing nothing else up until the Reaper arc where she just goes lmao screw it broodmother time. Able to smell destiny and know for sure that merging with a creature of death and destruction will make sure it doesn't go rampaging.

The Eternal Dragon gives Richard something that could literally turn against him fighting the Reapers. He's beyond the levels of Gods who are said to be very good at manipulating the soul, yet he can't do that?

Why does Richard not care about Nyris, so much that she literally kills herself to be rid of her feelings for him, as she got abandoned in the forest plane like a general?

Why does everyone forget about Richard's power and prowess, alongside his title? In a world where being s*upid means death, how do people survive past childhood like that..?

Anyway, rant over. Needed to vent a few of my pet peeves. In my mind, all of his potential partners to be became his partners and they lived happily ever after with many children, choosing to depart to explore the void and to reduce the strain on the plane, or even went to find a plane higher in power than a primary plane and lived there happily. Waterflower, Macy, Rosie, Sharon, Mountainsea, and so on part of his family happily; Flowsand eventually manages to return. There's no way the Eternal Dragon is going to piss off the people who sacrifice to him; that's not how business works. If he lets her be happy with Richard but occasionally gives them tasks to do in return, that'd suit him more in my opinion.

[collapse]

The author did an amazing job, however I could tell that the moment Book 9 started, everything started being rushed. In fact, I felt a slight dizziness around Book 6. I loved the interactions between Richard and his followers, especially Sharon and Mountainsea, Flowsand - They're things I really love. I have a soft spot for all the other potential interests as well.

I have to admit, many many times in the novel I dreaded and became anxious enough to start breathing heavily as death flags after death flags were planted.

Overall, a good novel, however the ending was, in my opinion, too rushed, too bittersweet considering how the plot was going, and far too far fetched. It's like Richard went from 30 years old or so, to suddenly 3000 years old. A bit weird, but nonetheless it works, I suppose.

I hope further works, however, place more focus on the actual character development than plot development. The plots are quite good, however the character development falls off a lot during the later stages, the MC even forgetting about core people/followers to his cause for decades, and love interests to boot.

From what I can tell, the author made every enemy more bloodthirsty and unable to be reasoned with on purpose. While not necessarily bad, it feels off putting.

Thanks for the good read nonetheless.

A beautifully crafted narrative with a wealth of lore to explore. It's worth sticking around for the finale to what is a truly epic series.

Richard's (MC) character progression was fascinating to watch; as he rises from the ashes of tragedy to create his own legend in an often cruel world.

I really enjoyed his journey; the friends & foes he gathers along the way are not only varied in their own stories but play an active part in Richard's evolving understanding of his life's path.

I only wish that the author spent more time on resolving/deepening character plotlines (Mountainsea, Alice, the Archerons) because there was SO MUCH potential to explore in terms of their viewpoints and Richard's obligations to them. I emphasize this because his entire journey can be understood (from Elena's death onwards) to be about him finding his purpose through the wishes of others. Commitment and responsibility to those he loves are the paradigms that propel him forward, and I felt that the story would have been better served if we spent more time on his evolving understanding of his roles as 1) A man 2) A leader 3) A lover

Still. A fantastic piece of story craft and well worth diving into if you enjoy a well-built world, character growth, and the relationship between power and responsibility.

I followed this novel from the start in 2017. Truly one of the greatest webnovels I have ever read. I'm not really one for battle/war stories, but I was drawn in by the masterful world-building and character development.

Spoiler

Sure, the ending was a bit rushed, but I thought it suited the story's progression. Richard got so powerful that nothing was a threat anymore and anything 'mortal' was trivial. I preferred this ending over those that cumulate in battles that go on for tens of chapters. I also liked how Richard treasured all of his love interests (none of whom were Mary Sues or useless damsels!), often risking everything for each one. Flowsand's ending really got to me, especially how she'd forseen it but still went through with everything. I wish we got to know whether Richard/Martin succeeded in breaking from the system!

I love this novels universe and a lot of the characters in it.

The biggest flaw in this novel is the author starts rushing and stops showing wtf is going on. Like the protagonist's core following stop getting screen time and some of them don't get any character building at all. His followers are the best part of this story and how they interact is what gives it life, so the authors decides to just cut this out...

His relationships do make sense but he does neglect them... more>> too much. Three of his women are from politics and even when they get closer there is still a sense of disconnect between them. The best females are Sharon and Flowsand, these 2 characters really do make me enjoy this novel more then I would have.

Overall, I really like this novel, even past the flaws. The author has become a much better writer in his more recent novels but the problem is that they are nowhere near having as great of a world setting and the characters aren't as interesting, as well. I wish the author revisits this universe in future novels.

Edit - The most annoying thing has to be the translation. The translator fails miserably with basic English and never improves on it throughout the novel. At least get a f*cking editor who has around a highschool education in English, it will make this novel much easier to follow.

Just so you all know, as of Vol 7 there hasn't been any NTR like people were saying. <<less

The novel feels odd at first, but the writing style is very refreshing - "zoomed out", focusing on long-term developments instead of short-term slice-of-life. It is very adult and cruel, and would be perfect if not for some unexpected hiccups where the author uses fantasy clichés that feel very out of place.

The only good point about this novel is the world-building.

The MC is someone who is supposedly very logical, but he sometimes does illogical and ret*rded things just to spite his father and his family. His personality is extremely inconsistent. At times cold and at times hot, with the only explanation being its his bloodline.

Chapters are teaser-length compared to 90% of other novels. They are quite often incomplete not even in a sense of having a cliffhanger but more like cut in half abruptly to inflate chapter count. So don't look at 1300 ch length it's more like 700. Power levels of characters are all over the place and as of chapter 110 the world has been barely explained. A clusterf*ck of subplots doesn't help as well. The longer I read the worse it gets, would rate it as 3 stars as of volume... more>> 5. <<less

TL:DR - Near Perfect Novel with balanced everything. Not suited for anyone that hates to much realism in their fiction.

City of Sin is such a fantastic novel that flows from real impacts in the story. From the very first chapters it's shown that there is a history to this world. A history that has had it's glorious but also tragic moments that do impact the MC. The rich world doesn't bend to the MC even as he gets very strong, there is still consequences that he has to face.

Individuals, even... more>> minor characters, will skirt rules for their own lust, pride stroking, and selfish wants just like real life. These characters aren't just enemies of the MC as an excuse to need conflict. The MC leads a group of people that feel alive and have their own sh*t going on. Not everyone magically continues leveling with the MC, some are left behind when the choices they made early in their life come back to haunt them. Not everyone is magically loyal to the MC either, loyalty needs to be earned, if not forced through magical means; but coercion, and blackmail make appearances too just like real life.

The MC is no saint but I would also say he is no evil character either. In the world he lives in he has needs and makes choices that strike towards the evil side but tries to keep things evenly in the grey area of right and wrong. He makes selfish, arrogant, and sometimes overly prideful choices that hurt himself and those around him. As he grows, so does his moral compass and this is sometimes powered by the loss of important people in the novel which leave him devastated. In the end he learns that some mistakes, some choices can never be undone.

The final volume is perhaps the hardest to like as so much happens and feels rushed. The tactical battlefield feel of various volumes tends to disappear in favor of quick ending wars that last only 20 chapters which would have taken 100 chapters prior. Battles and progress on adventure are sorted in sentences suddenly. Characters are quasi-killed off in odd ways, with that, we see an MC that becomes more jaded and is a bit more uncaring. While outgrowing his selfishness of youth, he never seemed to show remorse for dragging these people into his world that ends in their 'death'. He just sighs mournfully and moves on, which is a dreadfully poor way to see a character end that was around for most of the book, some of which wouldn't even be there if not for a selfish pride he has. Only he can ruin his 'toys' (people), not anyone else, which is sadly seen in real life as well.

Overall, an amazingly grounded novel that really explores humanity so well. <<less

One of the best Chinese web novels I've ever read. With the second place being Reverend Insanity.
The translation is smooth, and it feels like the novel was written in English and not translated.
This is actually very rare in Xianxia novels and just for that, it deserves three stars.

All of the characters in the series are memorable, even some of the minor-side characters. And all of them have their own lives and issues to deal with.

The plot has some tear-jerker moments that might be worth sticking around for, but they're dealt with in a chapter or two whenever they do happen.

This novel made me realize I'm a sucker for tragedy and romances that meet a bad end lol.

Like any novels of this genre, the protagonist starts accumulating more power faster and faster near the end but unlike with 'Warlock of the Magus World' or 'Reincarnator', it doesn't feel as rushed.

All of that combines to make this one of the best experiences Chinese Web Novel Fiction can offer.

I've never read something more boring in my entire life. I'm finding it incredibly difficult to even put it into to words. The author just assumes you're so impossibly invested into the story that hasn't even begun and shoves copious amounts of absolute garbage fluff down your throat. "Look at my epic bronze book from this old empire that no longer exists!" - Time Skip - "Look at this epic, utterly irrelevant, painting on this wall!" Like why should I care? Give me a reason to care. Is that too... more>> much to ask?

I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere, but I just can't bring myself to skim and block out 4/5's of the paragraphs to find it. <<less

I haven't read too far into the novel, and I might read further, if I get the motivation.

The author clearly doesn't know what to make the main character. His character switches from childish and naive to wise and calculating at random moments. This on paper, makes sense considering hes only a young kid. The problem is despite it being fairly far into the novel, the main character still has the naive streak he should of lost awhile ago, considering he sees everything in numbers.
Spoiler

Early on in the story, main character got his "cheat". Something only certain elves can do or something, and he has that elven bloodline. He awakens the power of "wisdom" and "truth". Wisdom, meaning he is wise. (I guess) And truth, he can see the exact numbers of anything, his ability has more layers but they aren't unlocked this early into the story.

[collapse]
So, despite the main character being supposedly "wise", he falls for some of least-thought out plots. He clearly didn't learn from his previous assassination attempt. Imagine this: Someone who looks like he wants to kill you randomly says "hey wanna go on a trip with only 4 guards to x?" Logically, this is a trap, no matter how you look at it. Main character, despite having a "wise" trait, falls for this trap completely. How many assassination plots will it take for him to learn, jesus christ. Also, it is extremely annoying reading the main character's cuck-mentality that seemingly changes.

Aside from the main character, the first part of the novel was extremely boring. The chapters in this novel are long, so it makes it even worse when theres an entire chapter of expo-dumping from multiple different POVs all saying similar things. The main character was learning the philosophy of magic and the "basics" and for some reason, the author decided to write all this out in vivid detail.

Aside from all that, this novel is clearly above-average in quality, compared to majority of novels on this site. The pacing, for the most part, is good, as well as the other side characters. Aside from the main character, of course. World building is amazing, I can clearly imagine everything happening. Aside from the various plot holes and inconstancies, the world is great.

Overall, the novel is pretty good. I'd recommend this if you don't mind the main character.

Wow. An impressive Prologue, to kick off City of Sin. Compelling me to power through the slow start to Richard's childhood full of studying, angst and jealous young masters. Slow enough to really delve into the world's rather in-depth system of: Swords & Sorcery, Runecrafting, Deities, Ancient Bloodlines & Noble Families.

But once the adventurous tutorial is complete, the true story of Planar Warfare begins. With a lot of Army Building, Money Making and some Kingdom Building that has more in common with Dungeon Management WNs. Colonizing Planes along with his... more>> growing batch of companions, who grow and develop with him. Where Richard himself maturing into a charismatic yet flawed protagonist, with a harem of s*xual partners gravitating towards him, who all surprisingly remain relevant throughout the story and rarely as a damsel in distress.

A story where the writer occasionally gets lazy when it comes to forcing dilemmas onto characters I like. Often by morphing their adversaries into inflexible Alzheimer's sufferers, often forgetful of who they are dealing with, leading to endless conflicts. The author did do an alright job building up towards an epic conclusion, but unfortunately I'm just not a fan of endless battles. <<less

A good book to read but has its own flaw. First half of the book is truly fun and engaging but latter half is the one which has major flaw.

Most of the question raised in the novel is not answered and most of the sacrifice made just does not make sense whatsoever (major instance). Romance is not a thing in this story. You are borderline confused at is there romance? Or is there what? What is that? Totally confusion. Author starts a romantic plot and bam wtf happened,

Lots of... more>> loose ends are there and most importantly only downfall of this novel is that rushness with lack of explanation of why is way too confusing. If you are avid readers you will not want to continue cause it is the only major plot point of the series.

Well I hope there is continuation of the series otherwise I think it is a pointless series.
Spoiler

Major plot is not explained and hushed at the end. Nightmare being that was so dangerous which started the series was just forgotter. His mother's goal and why she did that was just like author wanna faunt his power of creation. Powerhouse/Major world players introduced are not used or involved and just sidelined until MC just jump to the top..... like nothing and it was always possible for anybody. We are not even clearly told why MC became that strong lol. Out of nowhere you get main enemy and it is not even clearly explained what it is like Tranformers or a freaking cyborg. But the end result of that majestic destroyers are meh...

Authors own world building was downfall to this novel he included so many unnecssary things that he couldn't fullfil at all. Lots of loose ends with 0 explanation what so ever. <<less

I've read through them all. ISSTH, MW, BTTH, CD/ST/DE, MGA (current), the Douluo Dalu novels, Jin Yong's novels, etc. But this one was special.

It's a world-building novel in the sense that the existing world is established, and yet not quite. You're introduced to the most powerful characters from the very beginning, and so that makes Richard's rise all the more believable. Of course there is going to be some very OP elements (broodmother, Nasia, etc.), but these plots are acknowledged throughout and so, some attention is directed to minimizing them... more>> as maybe these character's motivations don't always align with the MC's.

Richard himself is believable, too. His morality can be likened to you or I - not pure good, yet not pure evil either. His actions may seem too decisive at times, but as a leader of men, there's not always a need to be rational. The laws of the world also make sense, making the overall read quite persuasive and beautiful, in its own way.

It's not something I binged through and I suspect it won't be the same for you either, but sometimes, a slow burn is what we need the most to slow us through the craziness of the world in which we live. If you want the same feel as reading a high fantasy novel by Sanderson/Rothfuss/Tolkien electronically with some classic Chinese elements thrown in, this is a good one for you. <<less
