I will acknowledge that there are many problems with this novel, and some of those may turn people away, but the amount of enjoyment I got by reading this series is enough for me to give it 5 stars because it’s just a fun ride, and I’ll stand by that.

This novel had great potential. The first 300-400 chapters are great but it rapidly declined for me and just became a joke.

The novel started off "serious" enough that a mature reader can get into it. The MC had a very low quality personality, he was practically neurotic. But it was fun to read about him growing to become a better adult and human being. This took about a couple hundred chapters. He still had remnants of his old personality so it was fine. I assumed he would grow out of... more>> it.

He didn't.

It is quite jarring when the MC makes smart, insightful decisions in one side, but makes absurd and s*upid decisions in the next moment. There is no consistency. This is especially glaring when he treats some people nice then turns into a as*hole to others. In the end, he gave up one toxic behavior for another and it seems to be his modus operandi for the rest of the story. He stops growing as a person.

As a fact, the entire story stopped being serious and it took on a strong spirit of humor. Whatever people do or say is commonly misunderstood, but it always works out. Plot armor is thick and fortune strongly favors the MC.

If none of what I said is a big deal for you, then this story may be enjoyable to you. Otherwise, reading the first couple hundred chapters is worth it, but you will have to reevaluate the story afterwards if it suits your taste. <<less

as*hole characters are fun. Better then generic mary sues. Its fun, scratches that itch. And gives a cool sense of progression as both mc's powers and personality grows. You get a lot of warning about him being a d*ck till 100-120 but he's fine? Its a video game, git gud. Also the writing isn't great for those first chapters but it cleans up and the author gets better at dialouge.

I will admit that this is a good novel. But the thing that I really hate in this novel was the fact that the MC's growth was so f**king slow, to the point that even in chapter 500+, he was still somewhat s*upid. He just have a tremendous luck to the point that he received many blessings and good things but he did not use this blessings and good things in a wise way.

For example. He have a powerful pet like Noe. But he always keep Noe in the pet... more>> inventory, to the point that because of this, their monster instinct was already so f**king dull. If you read every chapters carefully, you will noticed that even though Noe was powerful, in most battles, it easily died, because its monster and combat instincts was already dull. Noe doesnt know how to attack timely and it couldnt properly fight because Grid only let Noe fight alone or together a few times. And he didnt even command, teach, lead it in a battle. Thats why Noe cant fully unleashed its potential.

Also his skeletons, even though he heard from Braham that the two skeletons have great potentials, he just put it aside for a long time because he thinks that the skeletons are weak because its fragile. He didnt even bother to examine it carefully, but he's lucky to discover that it can learn many skills. Only then he somewhat pay attention to the skeletons a little.

For those who said that he reached his current self because of his perseverance, not because of his luck. You're wrong about that. Its also because he's so goddamn lucky that he reached his current state to the point that it doesnt make any sense at all. But he cant use those blessings wisely. <<less

This novel is pretty much a clone of the Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, but better. Tbh I didn't like the novel that much in the beginning. When you start reading, you are greeted with a pathetic excuse of a human being with an IQ of about 20 points. However, he changes slowly but surely and finally becomes what you can classify an average person around chapter 300. However, he continues to grow throughout the whole novel. After MC stops being pathetic the novel becomes really great.

The story is fairly decent. It... more>> is quite interesting, with a good mix of reality and the game. The world is great and there isn't anything that's too nonsensical. The pacing is also great. This is probably the first novel where I can't say anything bad about the pacing and maintains multiple points of view at the same time. The best thing about this novel is probably character development. All characters are growing and there are always hidden sides to them and complex personalities. The things that I don't particularly like in the novel can be attributed to the way characters were built, which is great btw. Also we don't know many details about characters, we know enough about the ones who are important.

Overall it is a pretty good read, but you will have to tolerate bad MC until about 250-300 chapters. <<less

This novel is one of the worst novel in MMORPG genre I have read.

MC is nobody in gaming world even after 900 chapter, he is popular but not to the extent of everyone respects him. Everyone knows MC is popular only because of his class and overpowered equipment.

MC doesn't becomes proficient in game control even after 900 chapters.

... more>> More importantly MC doesn't have leadership quality (MC is selfish, arrogant, In the beginning MC was naive but after few chapters he turn arrogant), but everyone follows him.

The concept how a game can build a persons personality is nice, but the way it is taken is poor. <<less

The story was rather interesting though the MC was kinda too much of an idiot at the start (still is, just better) and had a terrible TERRIBLE personality but managed to be overpowered through luck/bad luck and his perseverance. Though it gets better, it took a while. After around chapter 300, it started getting really good but before I had moments where I felt like dropping it. Glad I didn't though.

The start would be a 2 or 3 star and later on a 4.5 as I really enjoyed it.

This is a novel that only very big fan of this genre can survive to read it, because if you just general reader or not vary big fan of this genre you will think this story is a tr*sh, not because of the world building or scene, but mainly because how the MC at the beginning of this story have no trait that can be liked by reader, most of his trait are trait that bring hates from reader

An enjoyable power fantasy novel where MC becomes OP.I just read to see the journey of Grid to become one of the best.

Interactions with rivals is nice but the lack of personality of the players is annoying. Khan the NPC seems to have more personality and was more interesting than most of the other players.

I did not really mind the 2 female players liking the MC for being strong and dependable but it just becomes annoying at how he does not notice and how forced everything feels. Literally everyone thinks... more>> the 2 players like Grid but he is too dense to notice. Ladies falling for dependable MCs is fine and all but it is feels so forced specially when the writing details how the 2 players like Grid when it all does not matter. They just say the good things of Grid that the story already conveys (dependable, strong, cares for friends, etc). Remove their drooling parts for Grid and make it into guild comradery then it would feel less forced. <<less

I don't get why people keep giving this a 5 star when it has a lot of fault. Sure it gets "better" (from salt of the earth to that obnoxious kid), but it still has it's faults. Why waste your time to see that transition?

I tried to give it a chance despite already reading the reviews for it. I thought, since a whole lot of people are saying "it gets better", then it must be better! Unless you really love Gary Sues, then you'll probably like this alot, but for... more>> me I tried to like it and it's just shit. <<less

You really need to be pacient for reading this novel because the MC is a d*ck, childish, and greedy for a few hunded chapter. But the good thing about this novel is the MC growth in his personality from being a really hateful guy to less hateful and finally a decent/nice guy that liked by his friends and the others. The thing that I dont like about this novel is the nationalism.

Also I think this novel is kinda inspired from LMS because they have many same thing for it to... more>> be a coincidence. <<less

The recipe for overgeared:

-Take the legendary moonlight sculptor

-Alter the tone and general atmosphere from dramatic and sometimes dark to comedic and somewhat cringy

... more>> -Decrease the tension by about 90%

-Replace the main character with a mentally handicapped person

-Replace the strange sculptor class that is challenging to master but has incredibly high potential with a class that essentially starts out as a master blacksmith that can forge expensive items with no effort or training and allows the MC to forge legendary items and gain godlike battle skills with a little bit of effort and training. The MC would literally be a millionaire within a few month of getting his class if he weren't an idiot.

No one who's read the moonlight sculptor can avoid seeing the connections and a lot of people are calling it a rip-off or a watered down version. However the actual experience you get from reading this novel is completely different. If you like comically overpowered and shameless MCs going on mostly light-hearted adventures then you will enjoy this fic. I've heard it changes a lot at some point but I've passed the 100th chapter and I haven't noticed any major shifts other than the fact that the MC now has op battle abilities to match his crafting ones and that he is slightly more careful. <<less

I would like this story except for one thing: the MC is terrible.

The MC is remarkably dense. He doesn't seem to know much about the game despite being one of it's earliest players.

He's also greedy and cowardly, to the point where he will sacrifice or cheat people close to him. In real life he acts like a child.

I'm curious where the story goes, but at the moment it's kind of a drag.

I might be biased because I love this novel.

it has the same basic concept with LMS but with better character progression. The story might be unbearable at first because of MC character. As the story progress, the MC character really did evolve and improve. However, the evolution just seem out of nowhere (e.g one day he's a buffoon and the next day he's Einstein), and this happens a lot with our MC. Another thing, the evolution didn't stop with his demeanor, but also with his intelligent (this also seem out... more>> of place, no one can change one's intelligent overnight).

The MC itself is pretty badass, really considerate towards his companions, and typical Korean novel dense MC. He's not one of the intelligent MC that can scheme something smart. He's just trampled everything with a brute force.

MC started as a miserable person, then found love and respect in the game from NPC. So the MC really see the game as his 2nd world. That leads to a touchy and funny moment throughout the novel. However, the author didn't really track the novel universe itself, so something might just popped-up in a chapter then forgotten for the rest of the novel. <<less

At first the MC was a defeated bug, but as the story goes along he changes into a likeable and charismatic character. It is a change that makes sense and feels natural. The writing is great as well. Just a well crafted novel.

The MC actions in the first ~100 chapter are geatly "inspired" by LMS. They even share the worst character traits (greedy and ignore the game mechanics).

The character development goes from good for nothing brat with the IQ of a stone, to not yet a "normal" person. While introducing too many players and npcs. The few that have a personality, especially the female love interests, loose them pretty quickly.

The novel would probably be much better if the author just focused on the guild of the few elites and how they get... more>> to the top. Instead we get no drama, slice of life kingdom building with some fights. <<less

First of all, this is my first time writing a review, that mostly contains my own personal opinion.

MC - Personally, it doesn't matter what character trait the author gives to the main character. Even if it's a greedy, blatantly s*upid, villainous character, it is fine if and only if it satisfies my criterion:

1. The character stays true and real to its character, be it in dialogues and interactions with other characters and the story.

... more>> - From my perspective, the novel does manage to do this.

2. The presence of character development, even if the story emphasis on the character's main static personality.

-This a check for me as one of the main reasons I stick to this novel is the character development.

World- Now, for me, this trait is entirely dependent on the author. As for what number it achieves on a scale of 1-10; it depends upon how creative, imaginative, wondrous, interesting, and thought-provoking it is. I also have a set of criterion I work with when it comes to World:

1. It reflects the story. It's entirety and purpose.

- Well, for starters, I discerned that one of the main purpose of this novel is to be enjoyed. The novel's world does allow the convenience of the story being enjoyed, so it's fine for me. However, there may be contents that'll do so otherwise to other readers. Overall, this factor depends on what kind of reader/person you are.

2. It is interesting, creative, full of imagination.

- This is a challenge faced by all authors when making a novel. For me, the world in this novel does satisfies the requirements. Though, it does have it's deficiency as well.

Story - this is the heart and soul of the novel. As for my set of criterion:

1. It must have a purpose of which must be of benefit to the reader.

- it can be of any form, enjoyment, acquiring new knowledge, etc. The novel is simply for the purpose of bringing entertainment to its readers. Since it does manage to bring me entertainment, then it's fine.

2. It is interesting, creative, thought provoking.

- For me, the novel does satisfy this. Though, there are certain lacking parts.

3. It brings you to another world.

- This depends upon how the story is weaved, and relayed to the readers. It does however, manage this but there are lacking parts.

Finally, to remind anyone who is reading this. This is my first time making a review, of which, contains purely my personal opinion.

Note: In stories which involved tons of characters, it is common for some to be forgotten. <<less

I was leaning more toward a 4.5, but given the bad reviews I rounded up to a 5. It is true that true MC is quite despicable in the earlier chapters. I was really irritated with him and aghast at his though processes. But as the story progresses, so does the MC. He learns what family is and how to value them. He learns to choose his friends wisely and loyalty becomes a major factor in the story. I've read up to the latest chapter, and I'll be a... more>> testament that the later chapters are indeed much better and more satisfying than the earlier ones. The current Grid is caring, strong, loyal, but still a bit greedy. Nevertheless, the things he becomes greedy about have changed, making him a great ruler and king rather than a great solo player.

Edit: 6/23/20

So It's been almost 2 years since my first review on this, and my review hasn't changed. I've noticed that most of the negative reviews for this WN are written by readers who have not read the majority of the chapters. As I said in the first review, Grid is not really likable for the majority of the early chapters, but as he comes grow to love himself and those around him, he develops into a decent human being. As of chapter 1242, the character development has kinda leveled off, but it is still an enjoyable read nonetheless. <<less

If you like system based novel, you should read it because at present no novel which is better than this... It's funny, good world building, excellent fight scenes, fast release and nothing like many other novels where long and lengthy daily life explanation are given.

I have read many novels, started it till 50 if it's good you will be hooked if not, push it, read till 100, like I read "I said make my abilities average" or "I reincarnated as a sword", or "the death mage who doesnt want a... more>> fourth time" first of all these stories are so so so slow and repetitive you will get bored (they will explain even walking, eating, travelling every fking time just to increase world and some bullsh*t fillers) and secondly you will get confused by the translator how the story is progressing or who is talking. And finally you read till 90-100 then you say what will happen, where is this going, where is excellent fight of MC.

But in some novels it's perfectly explained, some suspense is left for future from the beginning and the translator quality is perfect like in overgeared or some other novels on WW.

PS: I said make my abilities average have a high rating don't know why... Well I see most of the japanese novel have high ratings and high readers... Maybe they like all novels equally. <<less

It's too early to do a proper review, but after reading so many posts about how this story is a grind until chapter 100 or so, it's not true for at least the first 14 chapters. There were a number of moments I laughed out loud and there's nothing extremely obnoxious yet.

Will update this review as I progress until it's ultimately completed.

  • Chapter 458 Update*
After reading a few hundred chapters over the last 5 days, I have a much better understanding of the novel. The first 100 chapters aren't hard to... more>> read at all. In face, it's basically a slightly altered LMS (moonlight sculptor). The MC in both are practically the same and honestly, the entire story so far feels like a variation of LMS and not really it's own true story.

It is a fun story with lots of action, but at times the story feels like a teenage boy's wet dreams and makes you go wtf, this wouldn't happen. All the most beautiful women in the world love you simply becaues you try hard. Such a sad trope and honestly detracts from the story. The plot and character development is also too forced. Too many situations where the author writes something that is so obvious to lead into another point it feels pretty lame. I'm guessing this is the author's first work and there will be improvements in the future. Although, I did love Reiden's farmers arc with Piaro and capturing users to be farmers. That was original and hilairious.

There is no tension in the story because he's OP from the start. And the author pasting in all the weapon stats all the time is also annoying. He should only write out the specific stat that's being discussed and ignore the rest.

Will continue reading to see what obstacles Overgeared face later but already skim reading it because the dialogue is predictable and pretty bad.

  • Chapter 787. Up to date as of this edit. 3 stars. There were some fun moments before, but, honestly, the writing and characterization is pretty tr*sh. The national olympics arcs are horrible and written simply to make Korea better. It's one of the failings of many Asian webnovels (to be a superstar is worse) where the author is too nationalistic. Dislike the way Grid was written as he was a loser and he's now amazing simply because he swung his hammer a lot. People don't beomce smarter and more wise simply because they try harder. Would rather see him stay in character and rely on his team to drive overgeared forward. Too hard to believe he could make so much improvement. Will stockpile and skimp read for action but will skip all the rest.
Darkanlan expressed my view perfectly. Stopping around 500 is not a bad idea. <<less
