Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

This novel is great for 12 year olds, ticks all the boxes

  • Poor MC who's looked down on suddenly gets overpowered cheat ability☑
  • Chad body transformation ☑
  • MC becomes cold edge lord wannabe ☑
  • Best looking girl with the personality of a blank sheet of paper loves the MC ☑
MC becomes so strong there's literally no point for any character to exist except for the MC himself. After MC reaches S rank You will enjoy amazing dialogue each chapter like ''oh my god he's so powerful' When there isn't dialogue expressing how powerful the... more>> MC is the author likes to mention how powerful S Ranks are and how they hold authority, unfortunately now than the MC is 100000 times stronger than pretty much all the S ranks combined they are completely useless except for being used as cannon fodder <<less

Very poorly written garbage. I've read fanfiction better than this.

MC starts as the lowest of the low, and works his way up to be the strongest Hunter, and you would think he grows and develops as a character along the way, but not really. He remains the same, just ups his levels. All the while everyone starts to admire him for no other reason than the fact that he is strong. Wish fulfillment much.

His system was poorly explained and I think the author tried to make it fit in within... more>> a larger plot, but was not successful and the explanation just made me more disappointed in the novel.

Spoiler

His system was apparently the tool that that mega OP being whose name I forgot Fragment of Death or whatever, designed so MC can become the new him and take his position? So they can became one? But not in a sexy way. So it's like the Holy Trinity where they are one and the same, which still doesn't make sense cause the Holy Trinity doesn't make sense either despite Catholics trying to figure it out for 2000 years already. Anyway, he becomes OP very very quickly, so OP that no one else in the world is his opponent. Which makes for a very very boring read because once you've reached the top there will be no growth or development, it's pointless. Not that there was any growth or development along the way anyway...

The ending.. oh man the ending was juts a slap to my face. After trudging through all that crap, author thinks it ok to just basically erase everything that happened by reversing time and then letting MC do everything all over again, this time where no one dies?? LIKE WTF??!!?! I just felt that was really insulting and lazy on the part of the author. If you can't write well, then don't write at all.

ALSO.

I was blindsided by that romance. Came out of nowhere. Like a drunk driver running a red light and then killing you. Ok I mean I guess I could have predicted it seeing as there were literally only three somewhat, and I say this very sarcastically, "well developed" female characters. By that I mean that they are the only ones that have names. And two of those characters are related to MC, so ovbs the third girl is gonna be his love interest. But still. There was no romance or ANYTHING to suggest that they liked each other. And then BAM they like each other after like 2 short sporadic interactions. Also very insulting to me as a reader.

[collapse]

In short, don't read this book unless you have literally, and I mean literally, nothing else to read and don't mind being insulted with poor and lazy writing. <<less

Ok... started reading it as I heard it is like the gamer but "better"... The MC is one of the s*upidest people ever to live. Actually everyone is an idiot in that story, sometimes others act more s*upidly than the MC so that he can look smart in comparison.

Also the setting here is vastly poorer then the gamer. The MC here is a true loner with zero interesting NPCs, allies, friends, mentors, or any real challenges.
Spoiler

The temple scene was just cringy as nobody was able to figure anything out when it was literally spelled out for them. "oh, you mean we need to follow the instructions written on the giant glowing tablet!". Duh, that was obvious from the very beginning. But it took the MC forever to figure it out and inform people. And literally nobody else was able to think at all out of this 16 person team. How? they all spent time examining the giant glowing tablet and reading its instructions.

The MC vows to be forever selfish based on his experience of being betrayed... except he seems to forget that not everyone betrayed him. 3 ran away to save their own life abandoning their benefactor to his doom, while 2 others were literally trying to sacrifice their life as well at the end. (MC convinced the other guy to let MC sacrifice himself, saying MC is crippled and cannot carry the girl to safety. If the other guy sacrificed himself MC would be unable to carry himself and the girl out, meaning they all die)

The MC ignoring the first daily quest explicitly telling him there will be a penalty for non compliance. This is after he had previously accepted the deal from the voice in the temple, was told what happened by those who found him, has a navigable UI, sees his first inbox message is repeating the things the voice in the temple said, and there being no conceivable method of him surviving the temple other than him really being given a boon like the voice and his UI inbox say. And he just ignores the UI saying he will be punished. (its not like the quest was even hard, it was the saitama excercise routine)

And then the MC shits away all his points into strength like a moron. And actually justifies it with "As he was not yet sure about the effects of other stats, he had focused all his points toward strength for now." (ch12). This is after initially he spent 6 points on strength to test out what it does, but he refuses to test the other 4 stats and explicitly cites his own ignorance for putting the next 15 points into strength too.

You put 21 points into strength you utter freaking moron, you could have easily put 1 point into each other stat to test what it is that they actually do. Moreover you explicitly argued earlier that you are certain what strength, constitution and agility do from their description and only intelligence and sense are vague to you. Yet now you are claiming that because of your ignorance you are not putting any points in there.

Also, after discovering the ability to develop and level up skills during the penalty he proceeds to... not use them? why! MC is one of the dumbest characters ever

Agree with basically all the other low reviews, particularly the ones that say to stick to the manhwa version.

The plot/pacing/story problems with the manhwa version were already evident (eg. MC apparently "cares so much about his family", but his family never really shows up after he gets a miracle cure; MC getting surpressed by higher rankers but turning it around so fast that all the stronger rankers become irrelevant in front of him; MC bot grinding to infinity; OP MC with a constantly diminishing amount of character traits and less... more>> and less personality over time; no side characters with substance (or use, as everyone is x^xxxx weaker than MC)), but the manhwa has truly beautiful, gorgeous art that distracts you from the fact that the MC is a walking sheet of OP blank paper.

The novel does not have that art.

But seriously, I think the MC loses personality traits as the story goes on. It's kind of incredible. I don't even care so much about the Korea #1-ing, but the lack of substantial character development, cardboard personalities that got worse over time, s*upid time travel arc, filler plot cycles, brainless side characters and braindead MC... well, it's really not great.

I suspect that reading the manhwa and then the novel made me feel worse about the novel than I would normally, because at least the manhwa was a gorgeous hot mess, but this is just not good. <<less

Well, this certainly doesn’t deserve a 1 star but no more than 3 though, but after rethinking over the entire story and to counter some of the blinding 5 stars, I ended up just rating a 1.

The way I will be rating this story is like this: a star for plot, a star for world-building, and 3 stars for the characters.

1. Plot: The plot is pretty average. There certainly was some mystery as well as some pretty epic moments, but that was about it. The plot mainly focused on the... more>> MC without much care for other characters.

2. World-building: Not terrible to say the least; in fact it’s actually quite well done. Having some basic information about the world getting a clear understanding and picture about world, definitely would give this area a point.

3. Characters: Now this is where the novel just pummels and lost all of its stars. The characters are... flat. With only the MC getting any kind of development at all it seems. I understand it’s a story about him but this makes the world feel... dead. It doesn’t feel alive with just a focus on one person in a world of millions if not billions of people. This makes the rather great world-building dull down and creates a world that’s hard to really connect with at all.

The MC’s development also was terrible. He becomes like every other OP MCs forgetting about his humble beginnings and the friends he had during his roughest times. One of those people who would get revenge for hurting his friends and family, and while that is a noble ideal, disregarding all those who does need his help because he doesn’t want to help is not noble at all.

Honestly, he becomes an arrogant prick who looks down on those who were in his shoes. Like goddamn, it’s so annoying and I swear, if he wasn’t the MC, he would have been the perfect villain in someone else’s story.

Speaking of villains, the villains in this novel are nothing stunning. In fact, they seem and feel flatter than a cardboard that got repeatedly ran over by a car. They’re brainless and really only there to serve as a way for the MC to show off his powers.

The MC’s allies are also flat with little to no development at all, and this just really makes this novel not feel alive.

The novel is great if you want some short term screaming and fangirling/fanboying over the adrenaline inducing scenes but that’s about all. I’m rating this after a couple months/almost a year after finishing reading, and I recently skimmed through it again and I can certainly tell you that the impression just doesn’t stick. It wasn’t alive enough to stick, there was no emotional attachment at all, and after the adrenaline and impression of that adrenaline- there is nothing that remains. There isn’t even a little bit of hype for anything related to this novel anymore.

Anyways that’s the end of my rant/rating. I understand that many people disagree with me, but this is what I’ll be rating it, and it’s going to stick. I am also in no way an anti SL fan but I just feel that SL is way overrated. <<less

Stopped reading it around the chapter where the author started bringing the dispute between Korea and Japan in real life into this novel. I've been wanting to drop this because the fights are boring, the plot armors are boring, the characters are boring. But hey, I continued to read hoping it turns out to be better. But the author just had to make it worst. Seems like he is one of those anti-Japan type of Korean. Can't get over WW2? For god sake, it's been what? 70+ years. And not... more>> forgetting the Korean youths were eager to join the Japanese military at that time. It's only because of the current government spreading those propaganda to those who did not experience the war that Japan was a symbol of "enemy" in Korea. Well, I can clearly see this novel is aimed at Korean and Chinese target audience. <<less

I say author doesn't have talent in this field. Does he even check his novel at all. The plot is all over.I thought MC is complete newbie to game because he doesn't even know how to open message box. No I was wrong. It says he played rpg before. WTF someone who has played game before dosen't even know how to read message. Are u kidding me author. And if he played mmorpg before he should be familiar with stats properties. But author make MC so s*upid. He put all... more>> stat points to strength. He didn't even try to put one of his points into other stats like agility or intelligence and says he doesn't know what other stats do. It just happened between ten chapters.I say even as a fan of game elements, I am diappointed. <<less

I wish I had read the reviews here first before picking this up. Too late, at around the 100th chapter, Jeju Arc, the author reveals how much he hates Japan and every other country (but mostly Japan) you can see it in the way the Japanese were written in that arc.
Spoiler

You can straight up see the author's blatant hate for Japan when he writes all Japanese as selfish, back-stabbing, conceited people, looking down on others and S. Korea, then proceed to degrade the Japanese even worse in the aftermath of that arc.

[collapse]

Next up is the story. I find this a slog to read through. Nothing interesting ever really happens. Most of the content is spent on describing the MC and side characters' thoughts, feelings, at that point in time, along with the environment descriptions, instead of actually moving the story along. Add to that the various descriptions of the characters like: "[Name] is the leader of [impressive top guild], yet [Name] is here to meet the MC?!" Repeat that (including [Name]'s short introduction) multiple times for every single character that appears in every chapter and you get the completed webnovel of Only I Level Up. I feel like an idiot realising this after spending so much time reading to this chapter I'm on now (133).

The tons of other negative reviews here should be able to better explain the faults of this WN better so do check them out as well if you find my explanations lacking in clarity.

If you are reading this review, I can only recommend you to not even pick this novel up as you will just be wasting your time when you could have read other better webnovels out there.

edit (completed a few days after writing the above at c133) : not much different from what was already written. MC continues to overpower all crisis faced by other Hunters and from other countries. No character developments happen to MC either, other than a fellow S rank female Hunter falling for him because of his smell (I Kid You Not) and overconfidence. Author continues to demean other countries while praising The Great and Glorious S. Korea (you can tell this by looking at how the author even bothers to specifically state the nationalities of the Hunters he seek to bring down, example of said nations would be China, America, Germany, Russia, etc basically the big ones you can think of). As for why MC can overpower his enemies: because the author from The Great & Glorious S. Korea makes it so the MC would always by chance have (barely) higher stats than his opponents (if tension is needed in the fight, his stats would just be higher by a small margin), making this a numbers game [i.e. If your stats are high, you win, just like a game :) ]

Spoiler

Even after the system gets removed from MC since he becomes the "Dark God" that was possessing him (said "Dark God" being one of Nine, who were fighting against the "Light Gods"; the backstory is something like a classic story whereby the original one "God" created "Light Gods" and 8 "Dark Gods", making them fight each other, once they found out they were being used as entertainment for "God", "Light Gods" rebel while only 1 choose to stay loyal but gets killed along with "God". The loyal "Light God" awakened his Death powers upon death and became one of the 9 "Dark Gods". Fast forward and that "Dark God" had to possess a human on Earth which was to be the new battlefield against the "Light Gods", just as the other "Dark Gods" had done. But his and another "Dark God's" powers were too great for normal humans to handle so he created a system to let MC get a body capable of fully housing the "Dark God".), the power levels become broken by that point since no satisfactory explanation is given to why MC's powers as a "Dark God" is stronger than everyone except the Last Boss "Dark God". You are just expected to accept it and move on.

Then the final battle: MC surrounded by enemies, decides to use an AOE stun skill in the presence of Last Boss, Last Boss was unaffected but was grabbed on the wrist by MC so that they can teleport to a secluded location for some lovemaking (just kidding). Last Boss, instead of killing MC at the moment he was groped on the wrist, choose to let MC teleport them away. Finally, MC manages to break the barrier between worlds to let the "Light Gods" in to kill exhausted Last Boss.

MC then asks for one more time-reversal so that he can go back 10yrs in time before everything began to kill the other "Dark Gods" so that everything that has happened so far doesn't happen. (Dungeons and monsters appeared to inject mana into Earth as "Light Gods" wanted humans to get strong enough to survive the upcoming war between "Light Gods" and "Dark Gods" on Earth. Why choose Earth of all places? Because the author from The Great & Glorious S. Korea say so.)

Novel then skips to the fact that MC has succeeded in killing all other "Dark Gods" and Earth is at peace thanks to this Korean MC who sacrificed 30+ years killing the other "Dark Gods". The End.

Side stories (aka After Stories) : It is revealed that MC could cause bad things to happen to the world while attracting other "Foreigners" from other worlds due to his existence in a normal world without Magic. MC doesn't care, choose to hang around instead of copying what other novels do where they create a separate consciousness with a normal human body to inhabit Earth. MC also able to easily defeat the "Foreigners" that were coincidentally weaker than him just because; so no harm done there.

Good early chapters, absolutely boring afterwards. A common example of how a bad handling of OP MC can ruin everything. No emotional attachment to anyone at all. Classic Korean novel and their tr*sh 'Japan is bad only Korea good' propaganda, sigh just stop with the propaganda and I'd actually give it another star. Everyone is useless except MC, even the healer woman from the early chapters weren't mentioned at all at later part, but rather the MC gets on with this other woman he met just a bit and apparently... more>> she is the only good one because everyone smells bad except the MC, yeah yeah whatever. Overall just bad, I wouldn't have read it if I had known how bad it will become, too bad I've gotten too far. I thought Seoul Station's Necromancer was bad, but oh boy was I wrong about it. <<less

The novel was good before Jeju Island arc but after that arc it goes completely into political propaganda and became an utter garbage. I don't mind reading novels with politics infact I love novels with politics but this one is utterly terrible. The author was like a 14 year old who doesn't know sh*t about politics and at the same time, every country except South Korea is greedy. I laughed so hard at this, be it the USA, RUSSIA, CHINA and JAPAN are all greedy and evil if you're not... more>> South Korea, especially JAPAN that the author vividly described as evil and scummy people when in fact in real life Japanese people were the most polite and kindest people that I have met in life, far from the Koreans unmannered attitude, by this point this novel pretty much became a propaganda. I hate novels like this it looks like it was written by a kid. If you don't know how to write a decent politics then don't write, else it will end an utter garbage.

Lastly, this novel will hook you up in the first 100 chapters in the Manhwa but DON'T FALL FOR IT! After that it will become shit, the stronger the MC gets the edgier he becomes, even tr*sh Isekai novels has more plot than this, the fights are dull and dragged and the side characters are all plain and robotic, they became amazed by the MC even for the smallest of things literally to the point when the MC does something irrelevant they became amazed and overreacted with 1 to 2 paragraphs of words explaining why the MC is so amazing. To those who's planning to read this, don't bother because this series is a joke. <<less

Flat characters. Cliche plot. Only for people who wants to satisfy their chuunibyou desires. The webtoon's art made this interesting. Everything's get handed out to the MC. Besides being OP, he's the most boring MC I've ever read about. I bet the reason why the author got surprised this got popular is because he's just venting into it like a teenage boy. 1. I read the manhwa first got interested and continued to read the novel, I'm disappointed. The plot Armor doesn't attack relentlessly but takes it time the story was good if you overlook things below.
  2. The power fantasy gratification these type of korean novel put is just on another level. Every time the MC does something, BA THUMP there will be pages worth of information about how good and great Woo jin is it gets onto your nerves in, I threw up my mobile once when there was a chapter detailing just how great MC is.
  3. Second the author unnecessary tries to force perception by aggressively using BA THUMP. You will find it atleast 5 times in every f*cking chapter.
  4. The plot Armor always hangs in the background normally it's a good thing. Good novels try to use good world building as move it along with plot Armor. Instead the world building in this novel is putting through our brain that MC is f*cking great and Korea is a power house.I don't mind the Korea power house thing but the author heavily tries to throw out other countries like Russians are this and Americans are that lets not forget what happened to poor Japan.

The Story is nothing extraordinary, but its good. Korean novels generally have almost no fillers in them.

Anyway, 25th chestnut got hit my C&D by the author, and he stopped translating. The manga (or whatever you call the korean ones) scans also got hit with C&D, so EVEN they stopped translating.

But all is not lost, the manga was quickly picked up by another group, so it'll slowly roll out in the future.

AND the brothers and sisters over at reddit joined hands, to translate the chapters ! Chaps upto 99.1 by... more>> chestnut are there. As of now upto 104 has been translated ! Took me a while to find this novel! I was reading the comic before this, and recently it started updating less frequently (I couldn’t find the novel because it goes by a different name). Randomly scrolling through the new updates I came across it, and I’m so glad I did! One of the best I’ve ever read, up there with Overlord in my opinion.

I was reading ORV when I saw this Solo Leveling is being recommended alongside it. Since ORV was satisfying despite having an open ending, I decided to binge this one. I was so wrong, I shouldn't have done it. Solo Leveling is a huge disappointment. Especially after the Japan Arc, it went straight downhill from there. I advise you not to waste your time on this work just like I did. I can no longer get those hours back, but you can still save yours.

Spoiler

First, I felt like MC lost his personality quite fast. He was initially relatable and easy to empathize with. But later on, he's more like an over-powered machine that's just going through the motions like seaweed in the ocean. I saw myself not invested in his story anymore and I started not caring whether he wins or loses in a fight (he wins every time anyway)

Second, the side characters easily lost their charm and are discarded once the plotline is already done with them. MC's FL, Cha Hae-in is also disappointing, she only had a crush on him when he's reawakened, "smells nice" and had abs. But will she show the same interest in him prior to his reawakening where he was small, an E-level and smells bad like other hunters? Of course not. Juhee could've been a better FL tbh, she was there at his worst, when nobody else was. But like I said, the author loves to waste potentially good side characters.

Lastly, the ending was obviously lazy and rushed. Time travel. And undid all the good things left that was good in this story. I just want to roll my eyes.

I began reading the manhwa version and became a huge fan before I began reading the light novel.

As you can see from other people's reviews: some love it and some hate it.

Here's my hypothesis: If you read the manhwa first, it's more likely you'd fall in love with the art, which makes it easy to ignore the other cons about the story (OP MC, dragging plot, too many filler characters, etc.) I personally can attest to that.

If you read the novel first, all of those flaws unfortunately become blindingly obvious... more>> because there's no awesome art to detract from them.

I'd still read the novel and I'm still a huge fan of this story, despite all the flaws. I like OP characters and I don't take the story too seriously. I love long arcs densely packed with action sequences. I like the leveling aspect of it. I like that the MC is someone who perseveres, is stubborn, has strong family values, never gives up, and always strives to be the best.

It's a mindless read, and everyone needs something like that once in a while.

I recommend this!

BTW There are more chapters already translated than linked here. Chapter 135 manhwa corresponds to chapter 173 in the light novel. You're welcome.

(Note to self: Finished the manhwa. Got to epilogue 3. I think I'm still at c173 with the light novel. Some rumors that it's no longer updated?) <<less
