After the nuclear warfare, massacres started to spread throughout the entire world. The order between humans completely collapses, and the strong eats while the weak gets eaten becomes the #1 rule.

I have been reading chinese novel for 4 years. But this is the first time I am writing a review. Acutally I opened this account to write this very review.
Spoiler

Now, it started kinda slow but alright. Very beautiful writing there at first. Nice world building. But when he got chased by the strong private army it became irritating. The army kept killing people who met with MC. But MC didn't fight back, he got his chance to kill many of them as a sniper and run away later, but he didn't do that. But he kept leading the army to army other people to get killed. Later, he killed a single of the pursuer, he actually didn't want to kill but it happend like an accident. The army ran away. He found the traitor who gave him up to the army but he just made love with her. Later he stole some weapon from that bit. Ch's boss, he didn't finish them, because he needed the army to kill some more innocent people. So he leave them and they report him to the army. Again chase start, army again keep killing children, woman, old and others because he lead the army to them and didn't try to kill them back although he got the chance. He found a valuable base with water. But he didn't slef destruct it, coz the great army needs the water. He even show around a army sl. Ut in the base in exchange of teasing. Then the army start chasing him again.

MC is the worst MC I have ever seen. This much s*upidy is sure to come frome its creator. The author is the real human scum to creat something so disturbing.

Typical case of an author specialised in writing beautiful chapters, but unexciting stories.

The plot seems really well made, the author seems to have put lot of work on this novel, and thoughts of a lot of things. But ultimately, it's not enjoyable, it's not boring, but too strenous to read.

After reading four volumes of this story, I have to say that it is fantastic. It is incredibly frustrating how underrated this novel is in comparison to all those other tr*sh Chinese post-apocalyptic novels out there. It has great characters, spectacular fights, and extremely competent villains.

It is great at building suspense, and has one of the smoothest and most natural story progressions I have read for a Chinese webnovel. It has great foreshadowing and manages to keep most of the named characters relevant rather than dropping them after an arc.

I... more>> can't believe that the top rated review is from someone who didn't even get past the first sixteen chapters. Especially since most of what is said in the review is nonsense. It sounds like the person who wrote it merely skimmed over the story without understanding the nuance.

In fact the character nuance is one of my favorite parts of the story! Enemies don't always remain enemies when alliances are based off benefit and large organizations are composed of different factions, so of course one group might want to kill you but another would want to save you.

Anyways, this story is definitely a buried diamond. I highly recommend it and hope readers will stick through it, the later volumes get pretty crazy.

Also to address a previous reviewer's negatives

1.
Spoiler

The logic behind strengthening perception is because MC is primarily a firearms user, so perception greatly helps with his accuracy and dodging. He supplements his lack of strength with advanced weaponry, and in most parts of the story, even if he increased his defense, most of his opponents would still tear through him like wet paper.

[collapse]

2.
Spoiler

Smarter doesn't mean wiser. It just means he can think faster, but he can definitely still make bad decisions. In fact he is very unlearned in quite a few areas, which he leaves his subordinates to cover.

[collapse]

3.
Spoiler

He doesn't collect battle spoils because he has no way of using them. Most of the tanks are damaged and he can't repair them, he has no way of producing ammo for the guns of his enemies and he needs money way more than weapons because of his serious debt, and he literally has no opportunity to collect s*aves most of the time. However he actually does use some later on in Volume 4. The whole reason he can even sell them is because his organization is researching the tech, not actually using the gear.

Post-apocalyptic novel that has better writing than your average chinese web novel. Not nearly as good prose as novels like Grandmaster Strategist, but way better than basically every wuxia/xianxia. Another thing I always look for in a novel (that this has) is if the author is willing to write from the POV of other characters. If this is present, then you typically get better world-building and character development for side-characters.

This is only strenuous to read if you aren't willing to read something that remotely resembles an actual novel. If you... more>> have the English ability of a teenager, you're good.

MC is the typical strong and mysterious type. Early on you are introduced to what his overall goal should be though he is working more towards survival and growth.

This actually deserves something between a 4-4.3 but I rounded up. I'm definitely drinking the kool-aid a bit on this one but I'll probably update the score once the honeymoon phase of a new, decent novel wears off. <<less

Absolutely enjoyed it!

MC is strong, but not OP. He have goals, but knows compromise. He can hate, but not indiscriminately. You can sympathize with him, not just ride along and watch him level the world like the usual these days.

What I most enjoyed though, was the world building. Makes you think that if apocalypse did happen, maybe the world would not be stranger to this.

... more>> I’d highly recommend this to people tired of the mainstream train, train, train, win.

PS

to anwaya1’s review, did we even read the same novel? It doesn’t seem like it. All I saw was a narrow-minded, skewed, and biased reading. Like, how the hell do you do reading comprehension? I don’t mean to demean, I was just that surprised at your “summary”. I just can’t even... :/ <<less

One thing to note is that the main character has sniping abilities in a fallout world with evolution. Cant think of another apocalypse world with a lone wolf sniper "hero". Which does make the main character a little more tactical and less moron/suicidal with plotarmor.

So far its a very polished story but its still rather early, my only issue so far is that its a story that is better when one reads many chapters at the same time. Find 1 chapter at a time to be more unrewarding then similar... more>> novels.

Hoping it keeps the quality, the translator gives a steady feeling very doubtful he will abandon it lightly if one judges from the perfect world record of steady performance over a very long time which is a HUGE plus <<less

I definitely recommend this story, well thought out and incredibly immersive.

Nevertheless, I find a few bad points to this one which makes it hard for me personally to continue reading.

  1. The MC is always weak. He never had a fight in which he won (at least for the last volumes) without getting incredibly injured. More reasons:
    Spoiler

In this story there is a type of thing called evolution points, which can be used to gain new abilities like combat abilities, perception, mind and more. MC keeps putting everything to perception because he used to need it in the wilderness (to see danger first). That is incredibly s*upid, because somehow every one can still find him when he hides, and it is much worse than actually being stronger and having more ability to defend himself. But the author keeps making the MC more perceptive.. But why? Maybe for future plot. But currently its a s*upid choice

    [collapse]
  2. The MC keeps making bad decisions despite being called "smarter then regular human".
    Spoiler

He goes to the middle of a battlefield because "instincs said so" and almost loses all his troops. He keeps fighting enemies he is not equipped to deal with (just find another war front.. Get stronger, and than go fight stronger enemies.. ≫<")

    [collapse]
  3. Spoiler

Why does MC never collect battle spoils? Weaponry, tanks, even s*aves (for manpower) ?
he just keeps buying and in the author words "after selling everything from battle MC gets 600000yuan and afterwards buys wepons and utils 20 people and he is out of money."

    [collapse]
Anyway is it getting really frustrating at this point. If there is no change I will also drop this.

Hope it helped you decide whether to read it or not.

There aren't many chapters out at the moment, but the story is pretty interesting so far.

The story is slow yet fast at the same time if that makes sense at all, but it isn't bad (at least for now) and is probably the most interesting story I have read in a while. It has had a lot of action and the main character is being developed fairly well. There are already quite a few moments where you can really tell what does and doesn't affect the main character's conscience.

Hopefully, it... more>> will stay good and won't become s*upid and full of plot holes or at least s*upid actions like a lot of other novels.

This is my review for now and I may edit it down the line once more chapters have been translated. <<less

Don't listen to the people who have rated this novel low. This is an absolute gem among a multitude of other post-apocalyptic novels, even compared to most of the top xianxia novels.

It has depth, the characters have their own distinctive personalities, women aren't some weak 2d vases and the story itself is truly well fleshed out. It's almost at the level of the epic fantasy western novels.

Just make yourself a favor and read at least through the first 1-2 books, it won't take you too long, you won't regret it.

Among... more>> hundreds of novels I've read throughout the past decade, this can take a part of my top 10 or so, mostly because of the heroines in the novel.

Cheers, have a happy reading!~ <<less

Excellent and thrilling story so far. The first 15 to 20 parts are kind of slow, but those slow chapters built a solid foundation for a good, well written story to develop on. The first few chapters were lacking in the fact that as a reader, I felt like the story was just happening. I did not feel the connection with the MC nor was I emotionally involve in the story, which despite all the its depths, felt shallow. I continued do read because I craved some decent writing, breaking... more>> from all the tr*sh I have been trying to ingest lately. To my pleasant surprise, the pathos side of the story I was looking for popped up, from then on, it became perfect. I strongly recommend it. <<less

I registered on this site precisely to review this story.

This novel gives off a similar vibe to Stephen King's The Stand.

However, it's so much more complex, subtle, and yet so much more comprehensive.

... more>> There are certainly flaws and inconsistencies with it. I won't spoil too much and say where they are, just that you'll know them when you see them. That's why I can't give this novel 5 stars, but I would give it more than 3.

I suppose I got so caught up in writing the review that I missed giving it a star rating. Perhaps a 4.

Suffice to say, the loved ones of the primary characters, more often primary characters than secondary characters, don't have random plot armor. They aren't protected by the author. If they live, it's for a clear reason. If they die, it's also for a clear reason, one that could have been avoided if only the primary characters had made different choices, ones they were clearly aware of. And when they die, nine times of ten, they won't come back.

Think Game of Thrones, but better.

[collapse]

The Author communicates exactly the message he was intending, despite his shortcomings.

This novel is not an ego-stroking power-trip story or a massive ret-conning reincarnation story.

Maybe A Step Into The Past could stand up to the caliber of this story.

It is a story that gives a heavy glare into the darkness of Life, and the light that can arise from the extremes of darkness, not just humanity, but Life as a whole, and bares it for all to see, if you're willing to look.

Easily one of the finest stories I've ever read, but not a story I could easily ever reread. <<less

Excellent novel. I have stopped reading, probably temporarily, because I've needed to focus on classes and partly because I became a bit annoyed at the MC. That isn't to say that what annoyed me isn't reasonable in the setting of the MC's world and personality, but for me it is annoying. Simply put, the MC is incredibly naive when it comes to the people he trusts and it bothers me.

I recommend the novel if you enjoy a well written and translated novel with good world building. The MC is cautious... more>> and clever, when he strikes he goes for the kill. He isn't blockheaded and does have s*x with the women; there are definitely signs of a harem but it is not annoying. (Coming from someone who is very annoyed by harems) There is no pointless face-slapping. <<less

The quality of the writing is very good. The prologue was very well written and it set a very dark, seedy, every man for himself tone for the apocalyptic world. The first ~10 chapters setup the MC very well, explained some powers decently, explained the environment and the monsters and the society. It was a really really gripping start to the story and very promising.

Then the author decides to throw everything down the drain with a 50 chapter plot sequence of complete absurdity. Some people are interested in the MC's... more>> mutant powers, they start chasing him, they go to the shelter where he stayed and proceed to destroy it and slaughter the people inside, even though he's not even there and they didn't do anything to help the MC. The MC runs, the group of people keep chasing and keep killing villages where he stayed. The MC manages to turn the tables and kill some of the bad guys, forcing them to retreat. What do the bad guys do? Get even stronger reinforcements and keep chasing. The process repeats, follow MC, slaughter some town he stayed in. MC defeats the bad guy team. The bad guys get even STRONGER help to hunt the MC. "Face palm". Whats funny is that the MC is forced the joint the same organization that was hunting him down through a really weird and unbelievable way.

I would have given this story a 2, but after the MC joins the organization, the story does improve somewhat. <<less

The overall story is interesting for me but the thing bothering me is that the author moves on the story without even mentioning about MC (probably 15 chapter something). And I do not understand that logic. If MC is not in the story, how could I regard "Su" as a MC.... this happens in the previous chapters but this time (I am mentioning the v6...) this is way too long and actually I stop reading. I just check if MC is in play or not.

As someone who has read the complete novel, the writing is extremely good, the characters are extremely well written, no one is an insignificant NPC that will never appear again and the world-building is really complete.

The plot is beautifully packed with action and serene parts with everything following logical reasoning. The best post-apocalyptic novel I've read. Some instances are really impactful and thought-provoking.

Most of the criticism that I've read about this novel is about how unrealistic the events and the characters are. Which I would argue is exactly how people... more>> would live in a post apocalyptic world where survival triumphs all. The best analogy I can give is Game of Thrones, where in the first episode Ned Stark dies. Really absurd isn't it? But that sets the tone of this world. Those who can set their imagination to model this world will really enjoy this novel. Characters will die and you will feel sad but no death would be unreasonable and unjustified, after all, if anyone faces a canon, they WILL die. This is that type of story, which just deepens the setting of this world in your mind.

Another criticism is that there are too many mysteries and questions without answers all along the storyline. All I can say regarding that is to sit through it and you will get the answers with that "Ah!" moment.

Finally, the ending will give you a sense of completion, which is truly rare in such long novels. Another praise to the author. <<less

I struggled to finish this. I was hoping to get better all the way until the end, but hope died in the end too. The plot was s*upid most of the time. The only reason I kept reading was because of the whole idea this novel was built on. I hoped it would get better, but it never did. The ML is pathetic, the FLs are great honestly and the ML should not get any of them. It was frustrating and a pain in the ass to keep going, but... more>> it kept me hoping.

Read it only if you have nothing else to read, and if you have a strong heart. Also a lot of r18+ scenes, way too many.

P.S: The title makes no sense. <<less

Not as bad as the most-liked review said for sure. This novel is the earlier work of CoS' author.

While the novel started off strong but the fights are honestly too much and repetitive. The change in POV from MC's to a side character's is also kinda annoying as the side character is not exactly prominent and relatable to readers.

Decided to drop it as I gradually find it not exciting.

The most liked review is quite unfair so I ought I'd leave a rating to balance things out, not really going to talk about the novel itself but just know that even though it was quite lengthy in the end, it really was an enjoyable read.

So far it is an amazing read for me. I put on hold reading the story for a long time due to the reviews here actually. Luckily I give it a try and I find it to my liking. The story is dark and gloomy. You cannot find a single comedy here. Even the romance are poor compared to other action novels that has romance. It is definitely not for everyone. Every chapter is content heavy. MC has no motives or end goals apart from surviving and want to protect... more>> the people he cares about. So initial part of story feels more passive despite how deep the story is. But the writing style of author is very good. World building is clear but slowly revealing. There are no major plot holes or cliches. Every action MC and the other characters take are consistent and logical with their personality and the world setting. One should give some time to truly love the story at least 20 chapters Here I must say while every reviews are based on personal opinions and preferences, reviews should be made at least after understanding the chapter. Especially review made by anwaya1 made me confused. The review is totally misguiding and it has 82 likes. I find it too shocking.
Spoiler

Initial a female side character Li was going to capture a base where she met MC and liked him bcoz he is beautiful and he did a thorough body check on her for safety. So she wanted to harass him more. So she and her troops chased after him to capture him. But during the chase no other person was harmed. Later they will make a one on one match where MC will won and he will r*pe her which she wanted to do to him and they will end their grudge there. But Li will take his gun as a memento but a colleague of her will run a biocheck on the blood sample of MC he find on the gun to research MC genetic abilities and to develop the formulas of them. But they will find something more valuable which will attract a major army to chase after MC. MC was not aware of it but he will sense danger so he will run far away. But one psychopath in the troops will kill people every where MC stopped to resupply. Until then MC never killed any of the soldiers only escaped bcoz as long as he escaped problem solved but if he killed them. They will never let go of MC. But after seeing the dead bodies MC will start to hunt them and will kill the psychopath and then he will also kill Li's subordinates but Li never knew anything about the danger MC faced bcoz of her colleague and thought he betrayed on the deal between them instead

Setting is dark. Women are treated as reproductive tools and s*x toys. Anyone weak can be killed or s*aved. This is common sense. So all the strong women character in the story will exhibit fierce, dominating and sometimes thirsty and will take what they want in a forceful way. Otherwise if they should a bit of weakness they will be turned into toys for men. If anyone can't accept such a world setting, then this story is not for you <<less

Highly descriptive, illustrative language that carefully paints the picture of the situation. A lot of effort is used to show a world where everything is either crumbling or rotten with corruption.

You might have a problem if you are uncomfortable with a work where the main character gets knocked around... a lot. This is focused on 'surviving' rather than 'dominating', at least in the volume I've seen so far.
