The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door. The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor.

At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. “Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽”

I have to say that this book renewed my outlook on horror genre. On the first look, this looks like typical MC with cheat system, just tackling the ghosts. But in reality, it is not a system at all. Good MC, good characters, good plot, good world building. Everything is good. At first, many things seems to have plot holes and MC has a thick plot armor. The world building have many questionable aspects since everything is happening in two maybe medium size cities, let alone the whole china. But,... more>> as I continue to read, the questions are answered one by one. All the plot holes and plot armors I think previously are actually part of a bigger plot. I think mc's cheat will also be explained in the near future as it turns out, the cheat we think of is not mc's strongest ability. Maybe, MC may even be the scariest being in the whole book. Just patiently continue to read and you will be amazed again and again by the finely built plots disguised as plot armors. <<less

This is a nice horror novel. Nowadays horror game/film/moving comic rely on jumpscare and those thing only, well, scared u. It doesn't plant a seed of paranoia inside ur heart, causing u to look over your surrounding twice and fear for the nonexistence being under your bed. That's what this novel did to me and I love it to bits!

My only gripe is that Chen Ge tried so, SO hard to convince us that he's a nice guy. I don't mind if the author describe that trait in a paragraph... more>> or other character's POV. But when Chen Ge said that with his own mouth, he doesn't sound like a nice guy but a narcissist.

So, in short. Chen Ge is not a kindhearted man with a cunning streak. But a cunning man with a kind heart :'D

4/5 Cuz the writing of the novel/translation sounds amateurish sometimes (like my own review lol! English is not my main language, sorry) and at one point, it even break the fourth wall. That one instance honestly crushed my concentration wth. I don't remember at which chapter, but it was around 600. Just my personal nitpick, is all. This novel is still good, so please read it~~ <<less

God I haven’t slept at night in a week from how scared I am. This is a masterpiece. It seems very simple but there is no obvious “scare” more like a slow creeping shadow. It’s very fast pace, each night is basically a whole adventure. No s*upid sappy romance, the romance in this story is cute but spine shivering. Everything is connected and the info isnt just thrown in your face all at once in the beginning. Highly highly recommend but I advise you to read with your lights on.

a very great read. True, it might seem repetitive with finishing the missions or confusing with all the stuffs happening, but everything are connected to one another. I like how this story is full of suspense and mystery, and a lot of questions that needs answer. The writer doesn't provide all of the answers in one go, and if MC found one answer another question will pop up. Overall, this novel is very good, the characters have depth to them and the story is something that doesn't fulfill the reader's... more>> gratification and curiosities in one go, but it's a gradual development that makes the plot thicken the longer the story goes <<less

Honestly I don't know enough about the Chinese horror genre to know if this is truly original, but it doesn't matter, House of Horrors uses a solid framework of a young man who has inherited a past-its-prime haunted house from his vanished parents and a System to alternate between ghost stories, building the haunted house with horror scenarios that the main character experienced himself, and long narrative arcs pitting the main character against a variety of insane serial killers and supernatural spirits.

In a feat of narrative finesse, the author links... more>> up individual locations/scenarios into a tightly woven chain of events that logically leads to the main character and the reader discovering more about various villains and how the supernatural elements operate. Each individual story is a mini-arc with rising tension until the case is solved while the same is true for the greater arc. After it's completed, the scenario is slotted into his haunted house and there's a satisfying if somewhat repetitive sequence of his customers getting terrified and passing out from horror.

The MC is given sufficient motivation by the desire to simply survive the night, for his Haunted House to succeed against the odds, and to discover what happened to his parents. What's more, as the story progresses, it becomes obvious that the MC is, for lack of a better word, not normal. He is haunted by his own past; initially he's presented as just being mentally tough because he grew up with a haunted house as a playground, but it becomes obvious that his past and his parents' past is more complex than that.

Sometimes the story can seem a little awkward because too much is happening too fast; the MC only sleeps a few hours a night and expands his Haunted House virtually every week and since pretty much every arc is about one or more mu*ders, it can seem a little strange that one person can get into so much trouble. Of course technically we know that's because of his powers, but the story plays it for laughs that his contacts at the police dread his calls because it always means more work for them since he's stumbling across mu*ders three times a week. Also, it's a little too convenient that everyone who witnesses his supernatural powers ends up dead or suddenly gets amnesia somehow. Still we understand that this is the necessity of the narrative framework, and to be fair, there are actual serial killer masterminds, supernatural forces at work, and a System running around so much of the absurd probabilities are actually not coincidences in the end. But really, what My House of Horrors has going for it most is simply that it's very well written, and obviously the overall plot is planned well in advance, which is vanishingly rare for the web novel genre. It's clearly a labor of love and I can't recommend it enough. <<less

4.5/5
(probably the best rating I will ever give to any LN, it is short of a 5/5 cuz I didn't find it entirely captivating but can be argued to be deserving of it since I don't usually read horror or mystery and am bias against it) Having said that, this is probably the best LN I have read and will read from this website. Easily top 3 for me.
Good read, nice balance of horror and comedic moments, creative story.

A unique story in this entire LN website that... more>> knows how to jack up tension in its most intense moments and knows how to be comedic and relaxed in its down-time moments. An incredible well thought-out narrative flow that has the reader chasing chapters. Negative comments:
Spoiler

It falls short on character development; not that it didn't have any but in the sense that I feel like it could have been better. The uniqueness of this LN meant that the hidden missions of solving the specters' inner problems would allow a deeper understanding to their character to be conveyed to the reader. However because there was almost no pay-off at the end of these trials or re-evaluation by either party in terms of the way they communicate except for superficial things such as specters being creepier or a change in relationship status from the black phone, made these side ghost characters feel more robotic and programmed to me. This is why I found myself skip reading chapters because the idea of a guy getting new haunted house scenarios or ghosts felt more like a guy playing a mobile game than actually solving the mysteries of his own ghosts. I found myself skipping chapters just to read the rewards for the end of the mission or the hilarious pay-offs where people enter his haunted house rather than being interested in the narrative constructed by the haunted mission because I found myself just not caring at all about those characters.

The greatest strength of this LN comes from its narrative flow of combining mystery with comedy almost perfectly beat by beat. But this is partially due to the narrative set-up resulting from the black phone. However the lack of the author in tying character development and relationships properly into this unique narrative flow, is its weakness. Not to a point where I would find it to be glaring but definitely giving me a feeling that I am missing something when I read.

[collapse]

Overall it is a good read, interesting and well written with an incredible and unique narrative flow that other LNs would b hard to mimic. It will have you captivated- scared to death when it wants you to be and laughing in its down-time moments - all due to the skill of the author in crafting this story. <<less

So far I am really enjoying reading My House of Horrors. I binge read all the chapters in one go because I could not put it down. I'm still craving the next update. The plot starts off mediocre but once the paranormal activity starts I assure you, you'll start seeing things in the dark.

Love it. MC has a great personality. And personally I actually found it pretty scary, especially reading it late at night. Obviously it's not completely perfect or anything and has some small issues as well as some tropes, but it's just a webnovel; so on the enjoyment scale it's a 5/5.

Probably the best (most entertaining) Horror book I've ever read. Nearing the end it may be a bit too much over the top, but generally, you can almost feel the tension building up with absolute monsters continually pushing our MC to new highs. Kind of an adaptation of a cultivation novel in a horror setting, and that it does marvelously.

I finished this about 3 years ago if I remember correctly.

While not the most eye-catching with the cover art, it surely pulled me in. I remember waiting for chapters and reading them first thing in the morning on the way to school. I'd sit there, with goosebumps and anxiety, and tune out everything else on the school bus.

Some say that it gets repetitive, and that's true, but there's only so much you can do when you focus on one concept. Which is why it ended where it did and didn't... more>> continue on and on.

I cried at least once in my reading because I was so invested in the story. This was my way of ignoring things around me. While I read other novels throughout school, this one stuck with me the most.

Coming from a reader on a website in a language you probably don't speak I just have to say this. Good Job author for being one of the best novels I've ever read. You really changed my life throughout High School. I'm not exaggerating and I'm not lying in the slightest when I say that I love your work so much. <<less

This is the rare cn webnovel where its length actually feels justified. There are definitely a couple of moments where the story gets a little boring, but they are the exception to the rule. This novel isn't for everyone, but I think that anyone who likes webnovels should at least give it a try.

I should mention that while this is horror its not super scary, its more entertaining horror if anything. Don't get me wrong, it has a good atmosphere and plenty of thrilling and haunting sequences, but it also... more>> has a lot of horror comedy. Around 700 chapters in China put heavy restrictions on supernatural horrors fiction, this caused the novel to go in a somewhat different direction in terms of style, but I don't think it was worse and in some ways it kept things fresh. It ended up going for a more urban fantasy feel that you might find in older japanese light novels while still keeping horror aspects. This novel also has plenty of mysteries, intrigue, and scheming. Its all surprisingly well done and the reveals are generally satisfying with maybe a couple fumbles.

While I wouldn't say the characters are the main draw of the story, there are some standouts, including the protagonist and the main villains of the first two parts of the story. There are also plenty of side characters that are memorable. The recurring characters in the haunted house sequences are pretty funny.

The romance is also fairly interesting, though maybe not for the reasons you would typically suspect. It starts out as kind of a comedic horror element that isn't super prevalent, but it has some pretty bittersweet moments especially in the last couple hundred chapters. I wouldn't go so far as to call it good romance, especially with how minimalist it is, but it has some good heartfelt moments that make it justifiable and honestly pretty touching at times. Even if some of the feelings involved appear seemingly out of nowhere.

This novel is ultimately pretty flawed but so is basically every novel you can find on this site. It's the peaks that make webnovels worth it, and the valleys for this one are sparse and not so bad. <<less

I love this novel very much. It is one of the few novels in which the main character is distinguished. The rest of the characters have a role and are also loved. Also, this novel discusses many social issues mixed with psychological horror more than bloody horror.
The writer was able to amazingly depict the MC's surroundings and make him so close to the reader that he made me feel as if I was living with Chen Ge in Jiujiang (the city where the MC lives). Speaking of forensic university... more>> students, I remember that they are the most frequent visitor to Chen Ge's horror house (lol).
The scenarios of the horror house are very diverse and of a nature that makes me want to try entering it, the most fun seasons are the ones in which a group of arrogant cynics come to enter the horror house, it makes me laugh a lot 😂😂.
The horror here for me lies in the anxiety that I feel in the thoughts and actions of the madmen in this story. It is not horror in itself, but rather it is like fun to know what this madman will do. The way the narration is what makes this fun.

There is also the mystery that makes the background of the MC unclear and makes the puzzles here interesting and interesting. The mystery of the scenarios and characters is also very wonderful, especially when the black phone gives scenarios to try it. Chen Ge has to decipher all this mystery and solve the interlocking puzzles to reach his goal and in Often times to save his life.

After all, I would only advise that you give this novel a chance because it deserves it.
Forgive me for the mistakes, I have tried to use my English as best I can. <<less

I love this book.

I've always been a fan of horror, and when I discovered this book, I didn't sleep for several nights. Not because I was afraid, but because I was too eager to read the next chapter. I didn't stop reading even when I was working, it was that good.

The MC, Chen Ge, is shameless and a sarcastic bastard which I love. His shamelessness has made me laugh several times in the story, and I do think that some of the author's description of him being warm, sunny, upholding... more>> justice, etc, was a kind of subtle sarcasm because Chen Ge is a total opportunist. If it could benefit him, he wouldn't stop at nothing to achieve it. And if it creates some good deeds in the way, then he'll also use it to create a reputation of being an upholder of justice.

There are several pros, the haunted house (which I love), the live streaming, the foolish visitors that make fun of Chen Ge's haunted house and gets fainted by the scenarios afterwards, the characters... in other words, I really love the setting, the worldbuilding, everything. But the reason I am writing this at 5 am in the morning is that I suddenly realized everything have gone a bit downhill.

I agree with everyone here that says after the School of Afterlife, it became boring. It really did. Even when visitors challenged the Haunted House, it was skimmed, and it wasn't scary at all. The horror factor practically disappeared. It dropped even more at the cursed hospital arc, which I'm reading now. I usually savor the chapters, but I found that I've been skipping chapters more often than not. Chen Ge, the MC I love, was also starting to become boring.

Spoiler

And the thing with Zhang Ya... I didn't even know when Chen Ge transitioned from being scared of her to practically going head over heels for her. Zhang Ya only appeared occasionally, during moments of great danger (and even then was often asleep, leaving Chen Ge to face it on his own) so I didn't have much of an impression. Xu Wan was mentioned more than her, hell, Chen Ge had more of a bond with Xu Yin than Zhang Ya. Every time their love scene appears, instead of feeling touched or sweet, I just feel uncomfortable, as if it was being too forced. So at the cursed hospital arc when Chen Ge nearly lost himself and gave up everything just because he could live blissfully with a flesh and blood Zhang Ya, I was really shocked. It felt as if both of them became OOC just for the heck of having a love story in the novel.

[collapse]

One thing that's also a con for me is the repetitive description of the author that Chen Ge was warm, compassionate, just a few mere words with fancy nouns can convince a ghost that he was a good person. Sometimes he didn't even need to speak several words at all, his tone basically managed to convince them that he was trustworthy. Also, there was the repetitive description that although he wasn't handsome, had a normal face, he had a charisma and charm that pulled in people to get close to him.

I also really wish that the MC wasn't in a hurry most of the time and spent time more with his ghosts. Like Xu Yin, I really wish he paid more attention to him. I feel like Xu Yin is really pitiful. Along with Ol' Zhou and Duan Yue, who never really received much gifts from Chen Ge or being prioritized just because they were baleful spectres. It was a kind of bias against lingering spirits and baleful spectres in the latter part, most of it focused on Red Specters. Xiaoxiao was also starting to get pushed aside. Understandable, because the MC was always running or fighting for his life which is why I wish there were more breaks in between to let us enjoy his daily life.

And lastly, where the heck did Xu Yin go??? At least include him in the ending! My favorite character is him QAQ <<less

I give up, I can't force myself to read any longer

This is not a horror novel, is a face-slapping one.

This novel is not only extremely repetitive, to the point where I feel I'm trapped on a infinite loop, it's also so, so boring, and all over the place.

Anyone who says this is a horror novel can fight me. This thing is so s*upid. And the "horror" only happens to characters who are so comically villainesque, it's not even funny.

Spoiler

Everyone, to the arrogant horror house visitors, to the opposite theme park workers, to even the freaking ghost society members, all get face slapped in the same way by the MC, or better said, his ghosts (because despite the MC saying all the time he likes to do things himself, he never survived anything by his own power), to the point they ALL faint and get sent to the hospital.

[collapse]

This thing is so badly and carelessly written, with so many plot holes everywhere you see, you start to feel confused if you are the one reading too much into things. But no, it's just carelessly written, and painfully dragged beyond its survival point. And I'm only at ch485.

And the amount of filler... No, I don't mean filler-chapters, because the whole thing feels like a filler chapter, I mean fillers within one chapter, to the point one chapter is just one character thinking how to react to a situation, all in 0.5 seconds, and this sometimes gets dragged on for Multiple chapters. It's simply unbearable.

If I kept listing all the things I didn't like, I could go on forever, so I'm just gonna stop here <<less

I actually wanted to give it a 5 stars overall but the plot quality undeniably drops after about 300 chapters, mainly because it transitions into an action novel with horror elements. But even after that it is quite enjoyable.

Up until the middle 200s, it truly felt like a horror novel. It perfectly captured the fear of the unknown in every single story, be it the ones lived by the protagonist or stories he read/heard from somewhere. Any threat was potentially fatal and MC had nothing truly effective to deal with... more>> his opponents. In my opinion it could've stayed like that for longer, even if the general plot was repetitive it didn't feel old because the stories were interesting and scary.

However at some point MC grew used to it and learnt how to deal with it, which in itself is quite strange. The relative strength between him and the other spirits diminished and it stopped being scary. I kid you not the MC eventually turned into the active party, chasing ghosts left and right and scaring them instead.

It would've been boring if author didn't play the card that MC was abnormal to begin with, quite late unfortunately but it still salvaged the plot somewhat. But it didn't recover that sense of horror. Some stories continued to be scary but they were played from the perspective of others, as I've explained MC became quite fierce. In my opinion the power scale was responsible for the transition from horror to action with horror elements, and the more fantastical elements which kept being upscaled helped to consolidate this notion. The ghosts didn't need to get stronger, they just needed to keep being a massive threat and the MC shouldn't have so much power, to maintain the horror element. Like someone said, the live streams and nightmare missions which were some of the most interesting parts got drastically reduced which I didn't appreciate, even though it made sense considering you can't live stream yourself invading private property for instance, or going around smacking people in the middle of the night. At some point even the guests at the haunted house become different, focusing more on clearing the scenario rather than truly enjoying it. Overall it's enjoyable, 10/10 recommend. Even if you don't finish it's worth the time, well written and interesting. <<less

One of the best web novels I've read so far. Usually I just can't finish cn novels but this one was different. Extremely satisfying ending and a great journey towards it. I don't usually read horror novels but I am truly glad I made the exception with this one. Obviously there are things that are not perfect. But among the sea of tr*sh with spineless jp protagonists and mind numbing cn/kr copy pasted novels this is a rare gem absolutely worth sinking days into.

Great story with great characters. The other 5 star reviews have said everything I want to say.

The translation gets 4 stars. There are a lot of careless mistakes that would have been caught of the translator just proofread their work. If they hired an editor, that editor isn't very good.

Lastly, the plural of ghost is GHOSTS, with an S!

or rather MC's ghost employees power-up

[collapse]

is also nicely done and the power system is not complicated at all.

MC himself is highly likable. He gives off madman vibes, being inhumanely brave

Spoiler

That one scene where he's the one chasing the mad mu*derers while waving his hammer and they are the ones actively running away was hilarious

[collapse]

He's also cunning/smart, rational/calm when necessary in making decisions, can be ruthless if needed. Yet he still has morals and bottom lines, and his heart is warm and kind despite everything. This mix of MC is honestly ideal since the mad/cunning side makes him non-frustrating (doesn't make dumb decisions) and entertaining (the comedy moments in this novel are honestly hilarious) and the kind/warm side makes him likable/rootable (the touching moments are truly sweet) and you understand why his ghost employees are loyal to him/likes him. I give MC 10/5, would read him in any story.

One of my favourite parts (due to it being my favourite trope obviously) is definitely the relationship development between MC and his ghost employees towards a friendship/found family sort of vibes. It wasn't instant (or at least for the major ones it wasn't) and I appreciate that. All of the ghost employees are likable in their own right.
Spoiler

My favourite though is definitely Xu Yin what basically grew alongside MC in terms of power and is boundlessly loyal towards the MC and eventually formed his heart that turned him into a Red Specter through protecting MC with his life on the line. Their relationship definitely falls under bromance category and I like how the MC doesn't force/manipulates Xu Yin and actually does appreciate and genuinely care about him. One of my favourite scenes is when the smiling guy tells MC to just order Xu Yin alone to carry the flyer away to distract the enemy and MC outright rejects this and says he wants to share the burden together with Xu Yin

[collapse]

On a side note, while I am not a fan of romance, MC and Zhang Ya's interactions were interesting (since Zhang Ya is basically a double edged sword and MC's most OP trump card) and not cringey/romantic, and the development was mostly subtle and well done. I'd say even if you are a romance avoider, I'd still recommend this book since romance isn't the main focus at all (and also there's no harem) (and the late romance tag really means the "late" part do you don't have to feel wary of it). <<less
