Simply one of the best xianxia novels out there. The novel is good because:

  • The name of the novel and the content of the novel matches
  • No unnecessary face slapping. No one comes to harass the MC just because he breathes!!!
  • The world building is decent and has good variety
  • The MC does not go on to ensure that every relative he has also becomes immortal. Every character (including mortals) have their path and the MC has its own.
  • He is not unnecessarily ruthless and acts with proportion
  • The romance is bit forced, but even then as it is not focused upon in the novel, it is ok
The novel becomes a bit repetitive after chapter 1200, but that is only for those who binge read it like crazy. For those who read some chapters a day,... more>> it wouldn't matter much and they can enjoy the novel

Hope this helps. <<less

Novel is a bit boring, slow and full of loose ends.

Author introduces the characters, builds up the intrigue and forgets about it. MC's motivation part and priorities are hard to understand. Writing feels unclear and world feels inconsistent as if author isnt sure about his own priorities.

MC is mediocre and is struggling, there's less cliche situations and no good/evil in the world, rather the shades of gray, the world is relatable, so that makes me read further.

But still there's lingering impression, that MC is too bland and lazy, and could... more>> get much more things done. <<less

This novel was surprisingly flat. It's very far from the novels where the MC has an early meteoric rise. For those who only read the beginning and disliked it, I understand! In the world, there is humans are like that : normal people, martial art practionner, cultivators. The beginning is in a martial arts sect. That's it.

For romance fans, better be aware early. The romance is subtle, rarely written explicitly, and 'long separation' tag isn't here just for show. Don't hope for the main woman and MC to be togheter... more>> most of the time.

For harem fans and haters, both will be disappointed. Strictly speaking, the MC does not really have any interest in other women except one. He's very clear about his relationship, doesn't play around or has interc**rse left and right, doesn't hang around with women when there is no need. The ' harem ' tag is understandable, but don't get trapped by the many novels where 'harem' tag means 5 women around all day.

Personally I really liked it, MC being focused mainly on his cultivation, his wife is the ' dao companion ' by the definition, they are both mainly focused on ascending. While adventuring, he encounters many many people. Some come back later, some die, some are forgotten. Has fights, goes undercover, runs away, offends people but not too much, some face-slapping was done but it was rare. I said flat, because you feel how long it is, how he changed with his growing age and encounters, cultivation and knowledge of the world.

I didn't read many cultivation novels that were this long, so I can't compare with others. I would still like to recommend it. <<less

2.5/5 boring characters, boring plot, no character development since beginning. Typical cultivation novel setting, but at least there's closure to people beside the MC other than they died of old age after MC cultivated for 10000 years, and will revisit characters once in a while through the constant loss in cultivation level

Lol han li is truly a tr*sh. His cultivation talent is so lacking that you will be suprised how hard it is for our MC to reach where he is now. Really he has the talent so low that he should have never made past Qi condensation.

This novel is father of all xianxia as you know it is really popular in china and it was written long ago. This has very likeable MC like that of WMW but little bit soft with girls. Romance still hasnt appeared yet but our... more>> MC has sealed the deal with a beauty. It isnt harem from what I have heard so maybe she is FL. Overall this is very good and slow. Like you will root for our MC more often then not and he is really coutious not like Hootblooded MC who is very reckless. So you will not feel extreme emotions of hotblooded MC but at least its more mature that way and better.

About cultivation and arcs it is kind of similar to Renegade immortal. As this came out earlier er zen might have taken some inspiration but MC here is completely different than wang lin as he is very cautious some might even say coward unlike wang lin who is hotblooded sometimes definitely less mature than this MC but real flaw with this MC is, he immediately contradicts himself if he sees a beauty and is really a pe*vert. Romance is horrible classic "rape" to get the beauty. <<less

I gave this 100 chapters to get my attention, but while I admit the story is good so far, the pacing is terrible. The first 40 chapters show years of character development, but then you get into a 20 chapter fight. The whole first volume only has 2 confrontations.

Beyond the pacing, I have other, more personal, issues with the novel. The first is that the author tries to convince us the MC is weak and has low aptitude, but in 100 chapters he is already capable destroying armies by himself,... more>> is a supreme doctor, a master of poison, a specialist is the most difficult martial art, and obviously a genius as well, let's not forget he also has an indestructible zombie bodyguard and a cheat item that gets him infinite money and ultra rare herbs. Even in the most self indulgent power fantasies a character would take a few good 600-700 chapters to get to this point.

The second issue I have is how mundane the world feels. To me the charm of these types of novels is in the fantastical nature of the worlds they present, but this one is a little too low fantasy for my taste, nothing about the world feels fun, I don't feel like getting lost in it's intricacies. <<less

u want to read the best novel? This is for u. A record of a mortal journey to immortality and lord of the misteryies are the best novels u can ever read. Considering the current translation speed we need at least another 4 years to translate completly the rest of the first book and the second one, so enjoy the run,

Lots of reviews claiming MC as a coward, personally I wouldn't call him brave either but is there a middle ground we can go with? I'm seriously suspecting that others are just too used to the usual 'brave' (Muscle brain, hot headed, plain s*upid, ridiculously over prideful) MC's that rely heavily on plot armour to keep their arses safe that are found in many xianxias, wuxias or just novels in general. As for the person who complained and said they are dropping this because harem is starting up... MC... more>> has slept with only one woman and that relationship started from a mishap one night stand due to trusty plot mechanic aphrodisiac. Seriously, there's plenty of women who like him but he doesn't give them the time of day, he has a 'concubine' that he hasn't touched, some disciples which aren't all female but still hasn't touched the female ones, and there was even one woman (actually might have to go back to check but MC might've had one night with this particular woman) that he actually wanted to be with but she turned him away because she didn't want to have to share him with another woman, said woman being his Dao companion (wife kinda) that he had to take responsibility for after that drug induced night despite there being no prior relationship or feelings between them, just the good old case of "I slept with you therefore you belong to me". In any case my point is romance is lacking and good romance is basically null in this novel which is probably the biggest downside but still a great read nonetheless. Steady and consistent story telling, world building and power ups. No young masters that I can think of, at least not any generic arrogant ones. Interesting fights that sufficiently are complex to keep your attention. Some might complain about the MC locking himself up in isolation for cultivation too often but hey, did you check what genre of novel you're reading? If want want non-stop action then go watch bleach or something (Not dissing, actually a pretty good story itself).

Definitely worth a read if you like the genre, how does it compare to others of the same genre? Well obviously the answer will vary person to person but it's a top ten for me personally despite its flaws. <<less

I think this is maybe one of the best xuanhuan novel that I ever read. I stop reading this novel because at the later chapter the MC is changing for something that I didn't like. The romance for this novel is horrible and when the MC is starting to collect his harem I dropped this novel immediately

Weirdly dry. I don't know how to describe it, but I just don't care about this MC or his problems. It is actually an interesting story, but I just don't care. Interesting powers, development, and MC, but the story is only the sum of its parts. Dull writing I guess? For those of you with the patience to read a lot of details, I highly recommend this! I was like that once but years of awful writing in awful stories have broken that habit. I don't have the patience for... more>> such stories anymore and that's a shame, because this story rewards it!

There's a lot to enjoy here, but you need a little patience. I lack that patience, but new xianxia readers should give it a shot. Well thought-out, interesting, and some good action. The problem is: it's an amazing story with a mediocre writer. I highly recommend this, but I am going to grade it as a proper novel as a result.

Tl;dr: great xianxia (xianhua? I'm not great with these genres). But with great quality comes harsher judgement. Definitely give this a shot if you like cultivation novels. Especially if you like to read details and learn lore. If you're new to the genre give this a shot. Plenty of good things to say about this story, just not my cup of tea. <<less

Has an properly written story arc at the beginning, at the level of western novels.

He starts out as a peasant son and has to use his wits through realistic hardships / death threats to get into the cultivation scene.

pro:

  • decent world building
  • proper power level pacing
  • "only" a support cheat device
  • limited amount of romance
  • introduced side character don't just disappear
meh:

  • still slow paced after the well written beginning
  • get's real repetitive once he grows "stronger" core+
  • no proper character development
    • some previously kept convictions seemingly thrown away after an "mood" change

I do not know how for others but for me was reading a little average at begin, but more and more worse and worse. Hard to explain without spoiler but all story was at begin with details then it loosing even this point.

For me it was, At begin it should be 3stars at 100c it was 2stars and at 200c only 1, at 209 tr*sh.

Spoiler

For example instead of finish and kill some women which is Han li enemy he will r*pe her, and she even enjoy it instead of kill him, because for one from the elders is not it shame?

But I think someone will like this so whatever if you like this novel just read it. <<less

So... I loved this novel to begin with, it was slow paced but seemed to be of higher quality than a lot of the other stories out there.

However as the chapters progress things start to get a little stale. The cultivation side of things is still very interesting as of ch562 however there is a lack of positive consistent character interaction, most of the time our MC is on his own and is very anti-social. This is the case in a lot of these types of novels and so maybe... more>> I should have expected it. However the cultivation storyline to date had impressed me so much, I guess I expected other aspects of the novel to be better.

This lack of emotional investment makes my rating sit at 3.5. I'll give it 4 stars for now, we'll see if this drops or rises as the novel progresses. <<less

I'm waiting for more chapters to pile up because I want to binge read once it gets to the point where our MC can finally stop hiding and laying low. I like that he uses his brain, but I'm annoyed that he's at the mercy of those stronger than him at times. It might a trope when the MC is expected to beat up people, but this is one of those times where I am really anticipating the beat down he's gonna give to all those people that go against... more>> him. <<less

It's pretty much a slightly inferior version of I Shall Seal the Heavens. Opening couple arcs is mixed, with some really good arcs (struggle against Master Mo) mixed in with a couple of underdeveloped ones and a few plot holes. As this was the author's debut work, the writing and story plotting can be a bit rough at times. Story picks up steam after ch 200 though and then turns into ISSTH where the MC is just exploring and fighting nonstop, but without the intricate underlying overarching plot of ISSTH;... more>> MC just basically fights and kills a bunch of dudes randomly and gains power ups from each fight. MC is also super similar to Meng Hao as both are have a cheat item (copper mirror vs jade essence bottle), become pill masters, and are solely focused on cultivation and don't build harems. 8/10 <<less

You can say up to ch 100 it was the prologue, a pretty damn long prologue but isnt that bad... sure it starts super slow and you cant even see the direction of the freaking story but once it picks up (around chapter 50) it hooked me up, if im going to compare it to another series it would bee like on ISSTH the 1st arc on the reliance sect, ok im not saying this is godlike like ISSTH but the aftertaste its similar to the 1st arc, if you... more>> are bored and without anything to read give this a shot <<less

Reviewed at c66, rated 4.

This one started off... surprisingly normal. No reincarnation or transported or transmigrated MC here, just what you would expect when any ordinary cultivator or sect member began his journey. So far, the plot armor was pretty thin, save for a fortuitous encounter. It is indeed the record of a mortal journey to be an immortal.

The novel’s character development and world building was also good. Readers can feel how the little Han changed in his behaviour, thought, and psychology as he grew and the plot advanced. Furthermore,... more>> the narrative was well-paced and quite well-done. No ramblings on unnecessary details, but all the necessary description was carried out properly.

However, considering the MC character and the world’s construct so far, I feel like the novel will not be going higher in the future. It is lacking some hook that could make many readers addicted, and the plot twists was fairly predictable (or is it just that I’ve read too much novels of this genre? who knows). Still, there were thousands more chapters left before the novel ends, so the possibility that my murky forecast will be proven false is high. <<less

This novel can get slow pace at times. I had to take more than a year break half way through. I feel the novel is not complete after the last chapter. There's a lot of room for continuing MC's adventures. Perhaps RMJI the sequel.

Overall, the novel was enjoyable read. I would certainly read the sequel if that ever came about.

Lucky lucky Han Li.

This is by far the biggest complaint I have with this story. There are so many times where he just so happens to find exactly what he is looking for, in a world thousands of times larger than our own. He constantly runs into characters he met previously, because it's lucky.

My favorite example is when a guy just so happens to die on his doorstep, which is must add was in the middle of the woods, and that guy was carrying a cultivation technique that would become... more>> Han Li's most important one for over 1000 years

That being said I did finish the story, so there was stuff I like. While most of his powers could be considered the result of extreme luck, it was rare that the battles were a result of luck. He wins for a reason, even if that reason is build on luck.

I also believe that he is as powerful as the book says he is, besides his magic power being several time larger than average in the latter half of the story. It's lucky that he has the powers he has, but his ability to utilize his powers makes sense.

There were a few things that were retconned and forgotten, and there were enough characters that I got confused a few times. But I very much enjoyed my time reading it.

If you don't have anything else to read, read this, otherwise find something better. Now I'm off to reread coiling dragon for the 5th time. <<less
