The World of the Future, Virtual Idols PK Real Idols

“Every time background music plays in my head, I feel like there is nothing to be afraid of.” —Fang Zhao

Toward the end of the apocalyptic period, Fang Zhao lost his life. However, instead of dying, he found himself 500 years later in the body of a young and aspiring composer who shared the same name. Having received a second chance at life, Fang Zhao sets out to achieve the previous owner’s dreams.

Armed with the experience of living through an apocalyptic age and his profession as a composer before that period, Fang Zhao uses his talent, wits, and knowledge to make his mark in the entertainment industry of the future.

For the reviewers those who rate this low, heres their problem:

-The novel doesnt have direction. Aimless no goal.

-Music he compose are baseless, illusional, pick from out of nothing and making epic music everytime like cabbages.

... more>> -The Dog is Useless, not so important and unecessary.

Fang Zhao is a composer. In Apocalypse time he doesnt have time to write, compose and make a music. When apocalypse near ended fang zhao is dying. He regret and envy those who can live in the new era. Regret he cant share his music and talent.

After his rebirth, his only goal is to spread, teach and share his music. His music is not randomly composed or to say pick from the past era like a cabbage and make it his own. He compose music base on his own present life experience. Some readers complain why the arc of this novel is off, going too far from what he want to do. They hate the dog storyline arc. Some reader dont know or they just skip reading some chapters. In this novel it is not only Fang Zhao but also Curly the small dog.

Spoiler

Curly is the reason of Fang Zhao rebirth. I think the only wierd one is that dog. The genre fantasy maybe because of that dog. The dog can eat tons, it can eat whales, metals and humans. The dog is an esper. Dog has strenght and can speak. He can control electric based things and this dog Luck is over the top, I mean he can control Luck. Fang Zhao bodyguards worship this dogs paw. Haha

[collapse]

After that dog arc he compose a music about his experience of this arc. The author made this story line, so the readers can feel or what his music related. Its not a random or baseless music. He travels alot to make music. Inspire to compose.

Again, Fang Zhao compose music base on his current life experience. <<less

This is a very solid novel, 80/100. The writing style is good, it flows well and it doesn't feel tedious to read even though each chapter is pretty long. The story is about a hero (also a composer) of the apocalypse that is reborn 500 years into the future. I think the initial plotlines are quite interesting and very unique. It is obvious that the author is breaking the mold. The novel has a mix of several elements, including show biz, sci fi, gaming, and apocalypse.

I think people should try... more>> it to see if they like it. I really liked it, up until about chapter 300 but ultimately decided to drop it, not because its a bad novel but because I lost interest due to some quirks.

Pros:

  1. Good world building - the post apocalyptic world where mankind has mastered interplanetary travel and are exploring the stars is quite cool.
  2. Good characters that pop out of the page and don't seem stale - The author likes to include a lot of side characters but he spends enough time to make them seem memorable even if for a short time.
  3. Strong beginning - Some low key humor splashed with good writing and good plot.
Cons:

  1. The over arching plot is a bit stale - The MC wants to be the best composer in the future since he wasn't able to be one in his past, since he had to kill monsters during an apocalypse. This ties in a LOT of showbiz elements such as composing songs for movies, TV shows, commercials. Its pretty unique in the beginning but I found myself losing interest later on and just skipping them. The result is that the overall plot after 300 chapters is still just a mashup of plots with no master plot. It lost me.
  2. Individual elements are well done but they are held back by Con #1. There are two major sub genres in the novel, VRMMO gaming and sci fi planetary exploration. Both are actually quite well done. I actually enjoy both genres if they are done well and they are done well in this novel. But they are both just small side quests to show how awesome the MC is in him quest for Con #1. I simply want more of them but the author always goes back to Con #1.
  3. The MC's character and his OPness kind of gets old after a while. He is basically a Gary Stu. He has some mysterious powers that make him basically a savant at everything, composing music, gaming, fighting, mining, raising a dog, giving advice, acting. He doesn't show a whole lot of extreme emotions. He's usually too cool for school unless he's killing people. Then he becomes the stereotypical 'genocidal death god'. There is zero romance in this novel. The MC doesn't even form any meaningful friendships. After a while I got bored of him.

I really enjoyed this book. Some people complain about the randomness of all the things the MC does, but I enjoy it. It breaks up the monotony that sometimes happens in longer novels. There's also a lot of teased mysteries that keep the book interesting. The further you read, the more it's clear that the author has more to show you. I also just the love the grandfatherly way the MC acts towards people who appear to be the same age. I'm excited to see where it goes.

I read this book around June 2019 and so far... I didn't touch it again.

I.. don't know how to say this but..

I enjoyed the first few chapters but halfway through (I'm not even past chapter 50) I already noticed that the story is becoming different than what I expect.

Spoiler

The MC is ridiculously becoming unbelievably OP beyond musical belief.

Especially on the part of the virtual idol *cough cough Vocaloid *cough* Tree.

[collapse]

I continued, for the sake of maybe it's going to get better... Besides it's really good at the first 25 or so chapters. But it just became too much of a fantasy and MC being too OP.

The English translation is decent and smooth no doubt about it. So kudos to the translators.

Try reading @triggerk's review he almost said everything that I noticed on the book whilst reading. <<less

This translated novel is the story that has made me give CN a chance just when I thought I could never find a great slice of life CN. Later on it was this novel that got me hooked to the author's other works.

This novel is an amazing work. Truly beautiful. I got so into this novel that I finally made an account with webnovel and hoarded stones after stones just so I could be up to date with it. :) Til now I still keep on voting for this novel... more>> and happily throwing my stones for every chapter. <<less

If you come here expecting top management novel, then you will get a knock off sci-fi version...

Thinking you will get gundam or macross with the war and idol? Nope! The mecha is just in a very tiny bits of the story... just mentioned in the passing in the beginning.

Futuristic world building? the setup is interesting but things get glazed over so much in favour of praising glory of the MC.

There ain’t much action nor goal in the book. Seriously it felt more like I’m reading a bible to praise fangzhao... more>> cult. There is not much struggle nor character growth.. it’s just OP MC.. worship him. The better arc is still the beginning, things get so all over the place after that. Also the author doesn’t explain many things eg why music and war is important in this world. Or why the war happened/what happen exactly during the war. Then again I dropped it at 100.. perhaps get better later on but nah no thanks.

In conclusion don’t read it if you come with the wrong expectation like me.. Honestly I felt it’s such a waste.. the world setup is interesting but the author chose to instead focus on the unimportant things and I GET IT ALREADY the MC is awesome.. stop repeating it. <<less

I love this series. It is the only series that I didn’t get bored with after 50 characters. The chapters are substantial and both the writing and translations are good. On that note this series is not a serious one. If is amusing and doesn’t run out of new materials.

The MC lacks much character development (he is over 100 years old) and is extremely op but his stoic nature is amusing in contrast to the supporting characters’ reactions. Overall it is a good read.

I like this story isn't about music all the time. Someone wrote a review criticizing this, because he expected just "music composition". Although the music part isn't bad, but I think it would be incredibly boring to read about this throughout the entire novel.

Also there is a justifiable reason, why the MC is good at all the things he has done in this novel (at least until chapter 135). Yes he is a music composer, but he had to survive and train in an apocalyptical world. So yeah, he can... more>> handle a weapon very well and has good fighting skills. I especially enjoyed these parts of the novel the most.

What I didn't like is MC's behaviour. He is somehow more like a robot and not like a human beeing. He doesn't feel "alive" for me. I can't pinpoint exactly why I feel this way though.

There is also a lack of interaction. He doesn't has as many dialogues as I expect from a MC. There is only the bare minimum of conversation between MC and other characters, just enough to fulfill his duty. Of course, the talks contain "business" related topics most of the time.

I need more emotion. I want him to be more alive.

I can't even imagine him to have something like romance going on. By the way, there was no romance at all. If there is a girl in the future, I think the romance would feel forced and artificial or the author decides to give him a completely different personality.

Either way, both things are bad.

The story is okay and the fighting related parts even got me excited. Everything was fine, until the dog arc. This is maybe one of the worst, awkward and most uninteresting arc I've ever read in a chinese novel. Worst of all, there is no conclusion to the dog arc until now. It is intertwined within the story and pops up suddenly between other arcs. It is like the sword of Damocles.

The dog arc is about sheep herding and yes, it is as interesting as it sounds. No, maybe it is even worse.

Also I didn't like the seldom, but occasionally descriptive story progression. I don't want to read a history book :D Okay it isn't as bad, but I didn't like the manner it was handled. <<less

The story is getting better and better. Yeah no romance, no drama much, but I really enjoy the story. It's not comedy either, but I laughs on certain part. This story become something that I cannot miss to read everyday. See what others surprise that appear to the others.

Of course not all part is interesting. Sometime how the writer explain things are too much and too long as I don't care about it anyway, so I skip reading those. But yeah, nice story.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. This... more>> is how I understand him. As I survive workload and work stress on the pass, suddenly the new challenge seem small. Even it's almost lead me to depression, but now I'm so thankful for that. <<less

Fairly interesting premise but the content-to-filler ratio is bad once the MC becomes a bona fide celebrity. It's a slice of life without much of a plot beyond building up his celebrity empire, so continue reading only if you enjoy that or the filler-esque scenes of flaunting and face-slapping.

Every time he does something notable, the author has to let us know the entire world's reaction, like every other generic entertainment world novel. Not only that, but everyone remotely related to him has to have their moment too, like his grandparents... more>> boasting to others. It gets old.

If I wanted to read page after page of praises from sycophantic fans and petty drama between celebrities (and their fans), I'd stick to stalking the Kardashians' social media. This isn't what made me get into the novel.

Nonetheless, it's surprisingly enjoyable when I stock up and binge-read. That way my annoyance with the filler is spread out over multiple chapters instead of concentrated in one update. <<less

Sadly at some point the story starts going off track really far. MC used to be music composer and when he reincarnated into new body he started off with that and that portion of story is just great... best off all it makes perfect sense that as someone who lived through "that era" he would make perfect musical pieces that would reflect that era. Sadly while music remains the front note for the most part we suddenally get "dog days" arc, which was still alright as it was MC's dog being in spotlight while MC was doing his composing in the background. Still at point which I reach and started to write review, the story suddenally switched to gaming for whatever reason. I understood MC wanting to blow off the steam perfectly and wanting to relive the old days by killing some things but just few chapters ago it turned into MC inviting players to form up a team for the gaming competitions. In this moment I am like WTF?

- From Ziki

Yeah, I stop reading it around that gaming thing.

Waiting for future news/release..

i was expecting something like a music version of True Star (without the BL) or God of Music but this is something different. not bad, just very different from what I expected and kind of... random. like the writer just started pounding away with a vague idea and then went wherever they felt like with no actual planning or outline to follow.

lots of slice of life. its not really a 'struggling up through the ranks to become famous' kind of novel but for all its randomness and its MC who... more>> can do everything well it's an entertaining read. <<less

  • I really like his genius dog
  • A good dose of humour
Cons

  • The pacing of the plot got really slow & boring during acting arc

so imma write this "review" to spit on triggerk, the man knows how to write a lot of tr*sh and nothing of substance, would make a great CN author here on NU.
dude wrote how he expected everything-be-music, yet the dumbass couldn't imagine music that the protagonist makes, lmao it can't get better than that can it. Dude writes how MC starts being military and all and stops music, f*ck off moron, none of that happened, MC literally left the military, the only reason MC even was in military was... more>> because it is COMPULSORY due to the world setting. I agree that the entire dog arc is tr*sh though, the novel would be so much better without the tr*sh dog pet, but the author loves adding tr*sh pets in their novels so nothing to be done about it. Now numbskull calls protagonist a composer and not a 5-star general, well damn how did you know? MC was a composer before the CALAMITY started, then he spent a f*cking HUNDRED years waging war, you expect him to still be a composer and not a super good soldier-general? Have you seen anyone spent a hundred years practicing a craft day and night and not be good at it? In truth MC should be a super general, and just a mediocre composer, cause he spent his entire life waging war, not composing. Next this dumbf*ck calls MC acting like MC is 1000years and all, that is until MC actually meets people that are older than him, then you see how MC does not act like an immortal sage, but who cares, everyone knows how to hyperbolize anything and everything, it's not like a person who lived through endless war for a hundred years and saw countless friends die wouldn't attain a zen-like state that helps him persevere through fire and ice or something. Then this total racist ret*rd gets surprised and excited about how everyone speaks chinese and there are no other languages, all the while forgetting how he just wrote that there are 12 continents in the world and that the world is obviously not OUR world but a different world with humans on it. F*cking moron take a look at all those sci-fi alien movies in which everyone and their flerken speak english. But hey I can't just erase all the other cultures now the way this f*cker did can i? So from what i've read, there are other cultures or at least they existed at some point, other languages, you can see them in the names sometimes, but ofcourse chinese is predominant.

anyway enough ranting, I just saw that review and it pissed me off so much cause it's filled with blatant lies and bs.

for an actual review, well I wanted to finish reading before writing a review, but eh life works in mysterious ways. It's pretty good is all I can say. If we can ignore that piece of sh*t tr*sh fortune stealing dogass, there is a reason why chinese like to write "dogs and blacks ain't welcome" it's cause it's derogatory, the dog feels like sh*t that MC just has to deal with. But that's just my opinion, in truth the dogsh*t is not so blatant, I just dislike the entire idea behind its existence.

The one thing that is of some importance is that the name is "superstarS of TOMORROW" but at least up to 320ch there are no actual superstars of tomorrow in the novel, MC is like a shinning supernova and there are no other stars around, maybe they'll get introduced later but idk. The ones that are supposedly stars are just side-characters, there is yet to appear someone who can be anywhere close to mc <<less

I liked the story for the most parts.

The MC is a reincarnated veteran with a passion for music/composing. Because he died old and reincarnated as a young man, he has some problems to connect with his peers and has an easier connection to older people. In his new life he tries to stick to music, but sh*t happens and he uses his old skills as an op MC.

There are some supernatural elements which are more or less explained near the end. But it's a reincarnation story, so yeah what have... more>> you expected.

Often the MC knows/predicts something because of experience. It's probably better than using flawed reasoning, but after some time it's gets old, so I can't really give it 5 stars.

I liked the aspect of music/composing in the story and how the MC gets his inspiration from the experience of his old and new life. It's nice to see that even though the MC is op he still needs to learn a lot (at least in the context of music). Simply because of new technology, technics and a change in music preferences. Imagine a reincarnated Mozart who tries to adapt his style to techno and pop. Unfortunately it's not easy to convert the same feelings through text as it's possible with music.

You can skip the rest of my comment, because there is a spoiler, but I don't think the information is problematic.

Spoiler

I have a problem with the last sentence of the MC "I came from the past and I belong to the past".

All in all it's a cool scene. But it doesn't really fit the development of the story. My assumption is that the scene was written relatively early on and simply staid that way.

For me it would be more impactful, if the MC paid homage to the sacrifice of his old colleagues, how far the descendants have come and that he will try to accompany them as far as he can, instead of his old friend or something like that

This was great story!. I love Fang Zhao everything about him. His dedication and his personality. Truly a wonderful journey for a martyr reborn After 500 years to see the all his sacrifices paid off and see the new world.

He isn't just a musician, he dabs into gaming, acting, military, investments, music, branching out, it was written so naturally because he has 100 years of skills and experiences.

I love the side characters they all have their personalities, I find them enjoyable. Some characters usually be very annoying in other novels... more>> but was well written here that you love them. I am glad also hardly any cannon fodder villains that hates you for no reason doesn't exists here much. So refreshing

The only problem was near the end too much focus on the dog, things were rushed and it was kinda annoying, it ruined it abit.

This is such a masterpiece, the journey of Fang Zhao is so serene and contemporary with past and present. I wish more people known it was him but it was also good in that way. I was emotional how he left his past and embrace the future as he goes through the motions. Well written

I really love this novel but honestly, In all honestly it's probably 4.5/5 since it's not a perfect novel. I didn't know what to expect at first. The story itself I'd say is well done. I only feel it's lacking in goals, MC doesn't have a specific purpose which weighs how the ending will end up. I also thought we'd have more stories from 500 years ago like a full-on flashback.

I really like how he describes the music it is almost like you're actually listening to it. (Man I wish... more>> tho)

the novel doesn't have that deep drama MC kinda brushes things off which really makes his character kinda alienated in a way, (but then what do you expect he's from the past)

sorry for the really messy thoughts! Highly recommend. <<less

It's a good novel to read, but half the time, I feel like there's too much fluff during the downtime and you want the story to just move along. It is to the point where I would actually fall asleep, or have to read in parts than do something else and come back to read through the slow part. When things are actually moving along, it is actually a pleasant read.

TLDR; Good novel, horrible pacing. It's a 3.5 for me.

If you read this work to the end, it will leave a good taste in your mouth. As an aspiring writer, these are the kind of stories that resonate with me the most, but I know more people will like it regardless. It knows when to be a serious story, but it also knows when to have a few flashes of comedy. There is progression and progress, but it feels realistic, always maintaining consistency. Even things that seem inexplicable or seem to feel somewhat out of place or very convenient... more>> to the plot are actually well thought out and explained later. This is a story where everything fits with everything, and manages to have a pretty good and decent ending, which despite not being the eighth wonder of the world, I can assure you that it does not pale against other worse endings, since it knows how to close a story round, which feels complete. Really with this type of Chinese web novels you feel that you can understand these people much better, and you also start to think about the sci fi aspect, and compare it with the present, and you wonder if something like this could happen in real life in the future... If something like that happens, that would be great. To finish and not go on too long, when I finished reading it left me thinking about many things, and I really enjoyed the protagonist Fang Zhao's dog, and when Fang Zhao strayed from the conventional. I wish you all success in your lives, and I hope that humanity continues to prosper and improve, reaching the light in our hearts.

Spoiler

: I agree with StoopidAddic, "The MC is complex and full of experiences. It's all connected and reasonable, the story may be about music but it's also about life and humanity's survival/advancement/expansion. Thankfully the masses can agree this was an outstanding read", He is right in saying this, however I don't hate StoopidAddic, I can understand why he doesn't think so highly of the story having only reached chapter 170. I was able to read it in a marathon, and the experience was comforting. All the novels I've read I've read them like this, and that's how you enjoy not only this story better, but also many others. Keep that in mind, and if not, take a break from this story if you think it's necessary and then keep reading. Do not have high expectations, and let yourself be carried away by the story. Thus, you can enjoy a good dive. It doesn't matter if you read fast or slow, this story is worth reading until the end.

pretty good. Tldr of story is musician lives and wakes up in the future where shis is digitalised asf. He becomes literally a superstar as novel title says

besides being a musician, he dabbles in as a gamer, acting, military army, commercial etc. You could say being a musician is the main quests while the rest are side quests.

... more>> A LOT of face slapping but actually interesting plot. This author got good ideas/plots but weak endings where it feels like its an abrupt narrator summarising type of ending

still fun to read tho, might drag a little here and there in the arcs but I wasnt bored at all <<less
