With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

I've just finished binge reading the last chunk (~1100-end) of the book that I've been saving for a while.

Spoilers here are just containers, I promise there aren't real spoilers.

Some points to make:

Spoiler

While in the beginning it might seem like it, but it isn't a detective novel. It's an adventure novel.

Notice the genre? Horror & Mature. It's got heavy themes and is definitely not for people who prefer sunshine-and-rainbows novels.

I can assure you, there's no romance in this novel.

The vocabulary is extensive and you'll learn new words if you're like me.

[collapse]

The MC:
Spoiler

An intelligent transmigrator, a former Chinese keyboard warrior. Has an interesting inner narrative. He adapts quickly to his new environment, but his environment also changes through the story, so he does, too. He tries to keep his conscience while playing safe, and the result is that he can't save everyone, but he tries, alright?

[collapse]

Other Characters:
Spoiler

I'm not the best judge of character development, but over the span of many chapters, the MC isn't the only one who changes. You'll get to see how the characters change with new circumstances they face, and occasionally, their POVs as well. Their motives and personalities vary widely. Anyway, I think they were well done.

[collapse]

Worldbuilding/Magic System:
Spoiler

As fitting of a mystery/horror novel, the deeper, more concealed/horrory bits of the Beyonder world are revealed slowly. Stuff related to it is described in detail. Be patient, everything comes together eventually. The magic or powers or whatever you want to call it is arranged and acquired in an interesting way, definitely not your cookie-cutter magic system. The setting is a world which has steampunk-level tech, horrory magic powers, real deities, and hidden places affected by said magic powers. Everything is super in-depth, which some may judge as being unnecessary, but I thought it was pretty cool and honestly did not worsen my reading experience at all.

[collapse]

Plot:
Spoiler

BIG PLOT TWISTS. Closely tied to the magic and worldbuilding. There's one plot twist later in the story I felt wasn't needed, but the rest were AWESOME. You never see them coming. The story is slow-paced and only gets faster in the last 400 or so chapters.

Opinion on the ending:

Ending was a little lacking, but I'm not giving up hope for extras yet

[collapse]

Biggest flaw is the wordy/descriptive writing style. <<less

Absolutely loved it, although it's a shame that we don't truly know how it truly turns out. I hope there will be a sequel, but it doesn't feel like a rushed end at all, it just seems like the author wants to leave it to the reader's imagination.

Alright, lets begin with saying I started this story with almost no hope of it being good, however the world building and systems changed my mind in less than 100 chapters, it's very thorough and enjoyable, the only problem for me is that the longer the story goes, and the more I read, the more hate I get for the main character, it's to the point where I'm constantly cheering for him to fail just once, so that any of this makes sense....

I'll keep on reading anyways because the other... more>> characters are very interesting, and I can just skip most of the cheat protagonist bullsh*t that happens every chapter for the main character, like seriously, the stuff the author pulls off to make the main character literally never lose or get setback in any way shape or form is the most ridiculous stuff i've ever read. I initially picked this up because it's China's current top novel. Has been for two years already I think. This exceeded my expectations. Gothic fantasy mixed with steampunk, its world building is superb, with a unique (among chinese webnovels that is) magic system.

It starts off slow, very slow. But it gains momentum once you're a few dozen chapters in. Trust me on this. The finale of volume one was climatic and opens doors to more questions and possibilities. I'm looking forward to it.

Main Character - Klein Moretti is actually... more>> clever and cautious. A very good combination in an isekai universe. He's also relatable and his shortcomings are realistic. The main thing I enjoyed was to see him improve slowly, but he isnt the overpowered boring type of MC.

Secondary Characters - Fleshed out and doesn't turn themselves into caricatures. I sometimes forget names of fictional characters especially when they tend to overlap or they only appears every once in a while, but for LotM, each one is relevant and memorable.

World Building - Not vast nor as complicated as I expected, but still way better than most webnovels I've read. Complicated is not equal to good sometimes. The magic system is quite confusing at first but tends to be understandable in later chapters as well and easier to follow and visualize. <<less

Transmitigrated to another place. An era where a previous transmitigrator spured the industrial revolution (sorta). There are steam engines, horse driven carts, and beyonders, people with supernatural powers. Beyonders belong to one of 22 different paths, they take potions to go from sequence 8 (lowest) to "1" (almost the highest) --close to a god. Klein enters this world and starts on the Seer pathway. He fights crime, beyonders, secret organizations, gods and demigods while holding an alternate identity as The Fool, the head of the secret tarot card gathering. The... more>> members have hidden identities and believe he is a god or demi god.

Slow paced buildup, but I like it on par with Crossing to the Future, it’s Not Easy to Be a Man. It's more of a fantasy wild west feel.

This is a refreshing read compare to the rest of the average Chinese novel. You actually have world building, character building, person growth and an actual story with decent writing.

The story started out like a mystery, thriller and horror that can give you a creepy vibe. It later become an adventure with the MC doing some soul searching and personal growth.

The novel gives me a lot of emotion whenever the MC absorb fully his "job". It signify the growth but also the maturity of the MC. Often it comes with... more>> lost and sadness as the MC accepts the reality of the situation.

The magic system is very unique. Each person can access to a path that follows certain "job" that would give them more power as they grow. The person is also influenced by the "job" they took and it would affect their personality. For example, a "Sleepless" job would spend his time being sleepless and a "Midnight Poet" would have to make poem in the middle of the night.

Edit: going to update this review. T

This novel is becoming one of the most awesome combat novel u have ever read including all the books I read on Goodreads.

While every novel relies on cool names for their moves that do the exact same thing this novel relies on the same move applied differently.

For example, the move "Steal" allows you to steal. At low levels you just steal items. At higher levels, you can "Steal" a distance, allowing you to close in immediately. Another level would allow you to steal thoughts and make your enemy forgets what he was doing. At higher levels, you can steal ideas and concepts and make certain methods disappear. You can even steal someone's fate and become them. <<less

I rarely read web novel from Qidian, but this one is a gem, which worth my time and of course your time too.

The world background is unique and superb. The characters are well written, especially the growth of Klein and his interactions with many sub-characters. All descriptions in this novel are not waste at all, every detail, which mentioned, have its meaning. Many scenes happened in each arc are like small scattered puzzles.

When reading this novel, it feels like we run along with Klein on his journey until the secrets... more>> of the world exposed before us and blast our heart with amaze, shock, and excitement. <<less

This is one of the best novel I've ever read, the starting may feel a little slow with info-dump but it really picks ups about c20-30~ and just the ending of first book left me with so much emotions that even I was surprised.

Take your time and don't skimp through chapters like what the previous reviewer was rambling on, most of the contents are related and isn't just filler.

I really recommend it for anyone looking for genres like mystery, thriller, action, adventure, level system, a little bit horror, MC foiling... more>> plans of entity so much powerful compared to him etc. And there's no s*upid romance (actually there's no romance of yet). And yeah a transmigration story that actually really have MC take advantage of his prior knowledge of earth. <<less

All novel based on free gift from author that let MC survive.

MC is a SEER.

I certainly recommend this! The plot development and world building is so good. This not your typical chinese novel that's why even in it's homeland, it gets rave reviews.

I got hooked in this novel just from the first volume. This novel made me cry, excited, nervous and so much more.

Also, the author is really great in which I can say that this novel is truly a gem! So I can proudly say that this is one of the novels that I sacrificed my brain cells to mtl the 600+ ch... more>> that time when there is only 200+ english translated chapters. Lol. <<less

Excellent. I have nothing to compain about while reading this, aside from any characters aside from the POV not really being given enough time to be fleshed out. Its extremely unique in its world, concept, & story. The story telling all follows the central “goal” of our MC, w/ any side “quests” relating to this goal rather than random obstructions. I can only give thos story the highest of praise.

As of where I am now, I love it! The amount of care and world building put into it is amazing for a webnovel. It does feel like I am reading a western mystery novel. The mixture of steampunk, high fantasy, magical powers and turn of century detective agency is very promising. I am praying that it will continue to amaze me in the coming chapters!

For an isekai novel, the MC is slightly different because

he wants to return to his old life and he tried

He is cautious and street smart, but he doesn’t know everything so sometimes he had to lie through his teeth in desperate attempt to dig himself out of a predicament. I like it as it shows he is just like us, an everyday man.. Also a non OP MC is always a plus in my book.

I am surprised that this novel didn’t get much more publicity or higher up the series ranking. <<less

I'll split my review into part based on Volumes.

Here is Volume 1

Spoiler

tl;dr- Mixed feelings, very slow pace because of good world building, good story, decent writing. Foreshadowing so far was minor, but good. Author has potential, seen in next volumes. Give it a read, just binge it.

Coming straight to the point, the past 200 chapters are... weird. It's definitely not a bad read! But,

It was really slow paced and "slice of life (sol) " like. I felt the writing could've been better.

Cons:

The author was very descriptive when a new character or an item was introduced- which is good, because of it you are experiencing it at that moment. Bad, because the information can be overwhelming at times. All this info dump, makes the first 200 chapters longer than it needed to be. I would say that there were about 30-40 of good action packed chapters which would keep you at the edge of your seat and make you guess. I had questions, which were kinda answered at the end of Vol 1 (<213 ch) but I still have questions which I imagine would be answered in the subsequent volumes.

Secondly, the action scenes could be better if author used atleast half as much as effort as they describe the "sol" scenes but that wasn't the case till now.

Till now, most of the troubles faced by MC was easily solved except for few instances. Reason being: MC is too careful, smart.

Lastly, the translation. The translation isn't bad itself but the choice of words was. Phases "heh-heh" was really used a lot admist sentences, a bit disappointingly if I may add. But, the meaning of stuff remained fair and sensible.

Pros:

Characters: Many characters, they seem close to 3D as they seem flawed because they make mistakes. MC is a bit smart, caring and I love his relationship with other characters.

Humor: This is what gave the novel +1 star because it carried the boring parts

World: Not much is known about the world till now, it is the end goal for now.

And to my favourites, Tarot Gathering, Job Requests, Different POVs- basically everything else other than the boring slow parts. I love it immensly.

Sure it's disappointing at times but it's a decent read. Don't burn yourself out, because the last 10 chapters of volume 1 makes me think that it is worth continuing this novel.

[collapse]

If you can push yourself to read 200 chapters, with good action sequences in between then give this a try

Volume 2:

Spoiler

Now THIS is what I like.

All my previous points are still valid except for the cons I mentioned.

The pacing has improved, feels like a different novel overall.

Action scenes, they've gotten better. No/Less Slice of Life sequence, very less info dumps or rather it's written well integrated into the story.

[collapse]

If you are a speed reader, I can vouch that the first 482 chapters will be worth it. Reading only 1 chapter a day, would be boring and painfully slow for the first volume (<213) but second volume should be alright. The story starts progressing very much.

Vol 2 gets 5 stars! <<less

this is a well written story.

Each of characters, the main character, side character, villain even small character is well written. no black or white. fe. I like how Tris the demonese is written.. such villain character is not villain, at one point, I feel a sympathy for her/him. Other example, I like how miss justice character development also.

the story line is well-paced. although you must be patient and maybe confuse in the beginning of the story (first 100 chapters), because of the world introduction. but the climax of each... more>> series is wait-worthy.

the setting is awesome. the whole world of LOTM is carefully introduced. the system is thoughtful.

many wonderful quotes are over the place. even dogshit's Danitz is unforgettable. and all quote by lovely reinette is lovely... lol.

Klein might be one of my favorite Main characters of all story I read.

I have enjoy the ride from beginning to the end. In the end of the story, I cannot denied that I want more. now, I only can wait patiently for the 2nd and 3rd stories to be released.

this novel is easily become my best novel so far. <<less

I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love. At first, I was like meh... The first season was a bit boring and slow. Now that I read over half of the novel, I understand it was the framework. The author forced fed us a load of information. Then I started falling in love with the characters—the author breathed life into them. I cried I laughed, I scoffed. They have their own life and issues. And the main character? OMG. He's funny, charismatic, mature, and cunning. What I love, is... more>> that we don't have ret*rded characters to elevate the Mc's intelligence. Or the usual trop, offended young master, with his strong brother, renowned parents, elit family, reclusive yet doting teacher, etc... Which leads to the MC becoming a fugitive, then working hard and becoming stronger. Destroyed said young master's family, earned out of his league's girls, moved to a stronger city, and repeat 5 times, then the end.

I feel like I'm rambling!!! <<less
