Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

I began reading the manhwa version and became a huge fan before I began reading the light novel.

As you can see from other people's reviews: some love it and some hate it.

Here's my hypothesis: If you read the manhwa first, it's more likely you'd fall in love with the art, which makes it easy to ignore the other cons about the story (OP MC, dragging plot, too many filler characters, etc.) I personally can attest to that.

If you read the novel first, all of those flaws unfortunately become blindingly obvious... more>> because there's no awesome art to detract from them.

I'd still read the novel and I'm still a huge fan of this story, despite all the flaws. I like OP characters and I don't take the story too seriously. I love long arcs densely packed with action sequences. I like the leveling aspect of it. I like that the MC is someone who perseveres, is stubborn, has strong family values, never gives up, and always strives to be the best.

It's a mindless read, and everyone needs something like that once in a while.

I recommend this!

BTW There are more chapters already translated than linked here. Chapter 135 manhwa corresponds to chapter 173 in the light novel. You're welcome.

(Note to self: Finished the manhwa. Got to epilogue 3. I think I'm still at c173 with the light novel. Some rumors that it's no longer updated?) <<less

This novel started great, but after a short while it became cruddy by giving practically no character development throughout, and the later chapters seemed very rushed in addition to all of the other issues. Plus the entirety of the novel was basically: MC spits on someone's face, they can do nothing about it or they die by our mu*der happy MC.

Solo Levelling succeeds to deliver a basic generic plot that most dudes digs because it's from weak to strong to stronger. Over hyped too much because of the art and the brain dead fans.

  • Main Character: 3/10 (Jinwoo is only interesting because he is the strongest but besides being strong, he ain't shit. He's the most boring dude I've ever read about. He doesn't need to be funny, he just needs to have more character. He's like the portrayal of brain dead teenagers who felt nothing after playing lots of games. Their personality got s**ked into the computer.)
  • Side Characters: 2/10 (I only rated 2 for Beru. Besides that, other characters who are supposed to S ranker are dry af and got stepped easily by the MC. ALSO THEIR CHARACTERS EVOLVES AROUND THE MC. They are the most unnecessary side characters I've ever read. They don't add too much to the story.
  • Plot: 4/10 (For the effort, it's not that bad if you actually have nothing to do. Man's a garu stue who quickly wipes out others existence.)
  • Enjoyment: 3.5/10 (you will rate this higher if you are new to power fantasy tropes)
  • Relationships (He did not even end up with the healer girl at the beginning who sticked with him through thick and thin. Nah, he got this girl who randomly sniffs. Also their romance is dry. Makes sense it's written by an author who probably has no experience having romance or even friends)
Also on side note, this contains some egotistical portrayal of their country. Korea - No. 1, I knew you had beef with Japan but please don't involve other countries lmao. The author ain't slick.

First off, this is nothing new. And this is pointing at the time this novel was written and published. Just another dungeon appearing on Earth for some reason and awakeners well, awakened to fight against the invaders.

From the very start, this novel limited itself by making the awakened unable to progress any further. Their power levels will stay the same forever. There are exceptions of course, double awakening but with similar concept and the number of peoples in that category is abysmally low. This butchered the ability for the power... more>> system to progress.

Then, it was told that the awakened could use artifacts to empower themselves. But, out of all the artifacts shown in the whole novel, whole part of it was just to pave the way for the MC. That's it. Also, the same case is with the runes that gives skill. It will only be shown for the MC. Nobody else.

Now that we went over the background and power system, we look at the MC. At first, he was a slightly short, scrawny brat that is the weakest awakened. Went into a special dungeon and then 'cleverly' in a forced way helped a part of the team to survive. He also gained the <System> that allowed him the privilege of 'leveling up' as an awakened. See? The whole premise of the story is revolving around the MC being special. The only special guy.

After he gained power, he became very handsome, taller and well, whatever you think of a hunk. Typical Korean MC actually. His personality took a whole turn and became a silent and edgy guy. Not really any reason for the change in personality. Only thing I can think of the MC is just that he 'cares' for his mother and sister. That's it. We don't even get to see how much he actually cares actually. I just see it as a prop to advance the story. No feelings.

Then, it's his journey to the top. Uncover the reason for the invasion and show off. He became a necromancer so obviously he won't get a team of humans. Just an edgy guy with his undead army taking everything out. Nothing else. Romance also sucks. FL got attracted to him because he uh, well doesn't smell bad for a hunter. Not much of a development. Just your typical, he is strong and I'm attracted. Boring.

Nationalism stench is heavy. I hate it when fictional books incorporate over-the-top nationalism into the story. This one really is on the bad scale.

Basically, this is one of the worse self-fulfillment story you can find these days. A hollow shell of a MC to let the similarly hollow reader to substitute into. A world that caters only to the MC, and the MC only. Only the MC can level-up. Only the MC has the brains. Only the MC would get the benefits. Horrible romance that has no substance. The only character that has a depth into it is a near-dead old president. Imagine it as a book written by a kid. Just another cliché plot with a shitty ending.

Spoiler

The ending is simply the MC reverting the whole time to the period before the invasion. He fought off all the invaders out of Earth. His feat, connections and everything that we read through the first chapter to then chapter was forgotten. Some have a little hazy feelings left but that's it. If you think that it is a good ending, you and I are really different. I see it as the author pointing a middle finger at me and say 'Joke's on you' as I finish reading the whole thing. What's the point of the whole thing I read if you simply write it off as [blank]?

A crap haha-_-

I'm sorry but can't even read till chap 20 because MC is not special ... more>>
Spoiler

I mean dumb, narrow-minded, contradicting, and dumb. Yeah, I already said that... I just cannot stand it anymore.

[collapse]
in how author (or translator) describing him.

Spoiler

He's way more than s*upid like how ignorant of him just thinking that those "unread messages" are hallucination when himself is described have this quick-thinking brain in the dungeon, like I said "contradicting."

I want to let that slide when how he thinks to use the system, HE WENT ALL IN TO STRENGTH oh my lord... I know he's not used to with these video-game-like instructions and living in hunter world, but please lord... at least use some common sense!

Oh, I remember reading his thought that his comrades leave him behind on that dungeon, can't he remember that healer girl doesn't want to but forced because she's lost conscious?

I can't stand it, really...

If he can't act wisely then at least act smartly... he's capable to do it but the author just want to describe him as edgy, and it's forced tho.

[collapse]

So tell me my friends, in forward chapters does he have character development or not? Does the wording still contradicting or not? Does the author still force to make the MC as edgy or not?

I don't want to judge this novel that most people find it fun to read as crap while I just barely read up to chapter 20, so tell me is there any improvement going on?

But well yeah, I admit this particular novel didn't meet my expectation. I want to keep my smile while writing this review and not to curse so I drop this novel (I have this feeling that if I read more before writing it, I will curse and crying over my wasted time.) <<less

I won't lie, this WN became a trauma for me. Simply put, in the beginning it seems interesting, until the MC becomes OP. The author probably has a chuuni syndrome that he projects through the protagonist. Author tried too hard to make the protagonist all cool and aloof, but he just ended up being cringey. The side characters (pretty much everyone is a non-essential character) have no job except to underestimate the protagonist and then end up being shocked by his strength. Training seems to be an important part of... more>> story, but doesn't feel anything except a little bit of muscle training. The author kept a lot of loose ends. <<less

I don't write reviews at all but I felt that it's necessary to state that the MC is a predictable dumbass. As soon as he gets a reward or something, you can bet your ass that he'll forget about it until it's convenient for the plot.

At the start, he eventually psychs himself up to finally do the "exercise quest" when he thought it was a hallucination that told him what he needed to do with a progress bar, but not bother to even check the progress after he half-asses ONLY... more>> THE PUSH-UP PART and then give up? What the f*ck makes you think you only need to do 1/5 of the quest to get a reward? What is common sense?

He even forgets about the boxes that magically appeared in his room from a quest until his eyes miraculously lead over in that direction.. How much more sh*t would I have to see him forget about if I continue reading? I was really hoping the intelligence stat would make him a little smarter but nope, it doesn't. <<less

I think the pace levelling is too fast, but when I consider that those gates opened so far is just tip of iceberg, I feel that the revealing progress of entity responsible for the system is too slow.

But, I really enjoy reading it so far, keep the good work

Overrated.

------------

Summary :

In a modern world-like setting, there have people who got 'Awakening', after becoming a Awakened, they become stronger and thus most register to become a hunter or a part-time hunter. Hunters can earns a lot easily in dungeons. MC is the weakest E-ranker 'hunter' (aka adventurer in isekai), he became an hunter because of his mother's bill and his sister's scholarship. Like any other times, he joins a random dungeon clean up party after getting a call from the Association. Because of greed, his group got nearly wiped out, as the weakest and the only one remaining in the dungeon he got a gift from "system" thanks to his courage and became an "player" like those in games : can get drop item, get quests, inventory, title,..

------------

The premise is good and we can notice that author writing style (or the translator?) is improving through the novel. For example :

Spoiler

Ch.3

Mr. Song nodded at Jinwoo.

Without looking away from the Statue of God, Jinwoo slowly rose and raised his body gradually higher and higher. Suddenly, the Statue of God's gaze fell upon him.

BEAM~!

If he hesitated even for a split second on getting back to the ground, Jinwoo would've lost a lot more than few strands of hair on his head.

Back on the ground, Jinwoo panted heavily.

[collapse]

As you can notice I think, it seems as if it missing a sentence before the "if he hesitate". We should have him getting down first, then having it told us what will happens next. It happens more than once, fortunately author seems to have corrected it a few dozens chapters later.

What I dislike the most in this novel is how bad guys, from the weakest to the strongest, keep popping out one after another to make MC stronger and stronger. He got even quests to kill people with killing intent towards him. Worst of all, those bad guys are really dumb and arrogant. No, more like everyone in the world are dumb beside MC? And, by chance,
Spoiler

one of the handful S-ranker is one of the bad guys' little bro. 'Luckily' the plot make him waiting until MC become enough strong to kill him before coming for him..

[collapse]

Also, since he became an player, he is became quite reckless. For example :

Spoiler

Ch.13

He got a key to open a dungeon, his reaction is 'I could just check it out and leave.' Man, just a few days ago you got blocked in a dungeon and with everyone nearly wiped out.. And this time he went alone.. Of course, upon entered the dungeon he notice he can't exit.. 'Fortunately', he found that he can level up and then clear for the first time a dungeon alone..

[collapse]

Finally, after 60+ more chapters, we still didn't got any news from his mother because he is too immersed into his power leveling.. And, he got many times hints about how everyone are just like a puppet created for God's enjoyment but he turned blind eye to it as if he prefers to stay as a dog and fulfill all requests from God.

Spoiler

Ch.63

He met elves-like being in a dungeon, he can somehow communicate with them because he is a 'player' and notice they are forced to repeat some sentences like NPC, they told to MC they received a message from 'system' told them to kill humans and how MC notice he isn't considered as 'human' by the system anymore but a player. 'No choice', he decide to kill them because mostly he wants to make them undead, he didn't mentioned that this is because he needs to clean the dungeon or this is to save the remaining weak 'human' hunters. Yeah he got a necromancer-like class a few chapters ago..

[collapse]

Overall, this a typical common korean novel. MC is a loner, the world building don't stand out and characters development are lacking. Weak to strong, to world's savior (?). Read it if you are bored.

Typical Korean dungeon-clearing genre. An OK read. Mainly because it's so absurdly concise it feels like you're reading a summary. I HIGHLY recommend reading the manhwa instead, which is almost a work-of-CG-art. As of Jan 2019 the manhwa has caught up to chapter 60+.

PREMISE:
It's a very simple plot device... a loser-but-super-earnest young man chances upon a "system" that allows him to level up in an RPG-like manner. There's a mysterious backstory of why the MC was awarded this power, hidden powers behind the dungeons/monsters, and typical conflict of class-warfare (E-rankers can't go in A dungeons). Very shounen, with little character growth for the MC besides powering up.

RAVES ABOUT THE MANHWA:
BUT, any good shounen relies (almost) entirely on fantastical/heart-pumping action/ecchi scenes. And that's where the manhwa delivers 6 out of 5 stars (not a typo). Not the ecchi, thankfully.

The author really lucked out in his collaboration with web artist Gee So-Lyung, the equivalent of how "Goblin Slayer" became a manga phenomenon despite adapting from a mundane novel. Think Frank Miller's "Sin City", "Batman Year One" graphic novels.

Enough said.

Here's a link to the Reddit manga meme that led me to pickup this novel again.

Great novel, 100% recommend if ur looking for a system novel with solo oriented MC.

Also be sure to read the manhwa (called solo leveling)

Its literally the same, sometimes even word to word, but the drawing is rly good. Specially the beginning felt a lot more impactful.

i read it from the manhwa and the art is so great but the plot is, pretty mediocre when I realize its just the art that makes you read it, I also read this novel a year ago and I only wrote this review to warn those who was from the manhwa. The character of the MC goes like complete 360, he was "Oh no I was weak before how can I adjust with this power" to "I will solo dungeons now hehe" in just few chapters, and guess what,... more>> he doesnt even get scared anymore even subaru who literally died many times still get scared in death and he, who just barely escaped his life everytime he goes in the dungeon must've develop him anxiety but oh well guess what, NOPE, he became a complete "Im not scared anymore" pretty quickly

Then there was something that piqued my interest and

Spoiler

I was excited when the party system was introduced in the novel, I thought he was gonna like party with other class S or help jinho become class S, since in the party system he can actually gain exp and level up like jinwoo, but I guess party system was abandoned pretty quickly and just been introduced for just that arc. Goddamn author

[collapse]

The ending was, not good.
Spoiler

he just barely defeated the sovereign of destruction now he wants to redo it? Man are you f*cking dumb?!? AND WHATS UP WITH THE SOVEREIGNS? THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE "SOVEREIGNS" YET THEY ARE SO WEAK FOR f*ckS SAKE.

[collapse]

the author just wants his MC to be stronger and stronger and stronger and stronger and stronger and just wtf is happening man. This novel should learn basic "personal development" to learn how humans really develop. <<less

It's my first time reading shounen genre of K-LN. I came to read the novel after getting interested in the webtoon. Pro: It has decent chapters (not too short and not too long), completed, MC is not annoying, and no collecting pokemon harem. Cons: The story is... boring and somewhat frustrating. Anyone coming to read the novel because of the webtoons, please, stick with the webtoons. One thing I particularly note on this novel is the hyper nationalism and political views of the author. Because of that, it could become... more>> an uncomfortable reading for some people.

Spoiler

The author really likes referring his characters by their nationality (to replace their names). Every few paragraphs, we are reminded that this guy is a Japanese hunter, or that guy is an American hunter, or that uncle is a Chinese hunter... Literally, every few paragraphs. Hey, there are many ways to describe a character. You could highlight their physical traits, their personality, or just simply referring them in the easiest way: HE. I would write it off as the author's writing style if it's just that. However, it became obvious that it's more than just writing style when, in the story, the enemy threatened to freeze only MC's country. They are other worldly beings who are going to destroy the whole planet! Why would they care about the dividing border created by humans? If the ice elf said he's gonna freeze this land, this area, or this place, that's alright. But, a country?? I don't even know where South Korea's border is, an alien is specifically going to freeze the country seems make sense. Why is it a country though? That's because the author is very conscious with his own country. Proven further in the story when it was mentioned South Korea finally being acknowledged and South Korean Hero coming to save the world. I mean, we don't need to keep saying Superman as an American (Super) Hero many times just because he is American.

The story is also giving away the author's views about other countries; Japan (bad), China (shameless, impatient, but still the respected 'uncle' of Korea. Pretty obvious by making hunter Liu as a respectful middle age man) , US (Our greedy capitalist ally who likes to do whatever means). He probably got a thing against Canada as well (rejected visa? Lol). His excessive nationalism or patriotism is ruining the story for me. After learning this, I regret that Solo Leveling is famous internationally since it would just make his chauvinism stronger.

I actually read quite past 100 but that is from the "forced locked down" translation (deemed illegal by webnovel shitheads when THEY ARE SUPERIOR compared to their translated version). Ho-boy, where to begin. First and foremost, READ THE MANHWA INSTEAD. That sh*t is the bomb! With pictures and sh*t and great fight scenes and the <filler> parts are negligible (again the fight scenes compared to the "fuel your own imagination" <novel fight scenes>) The reason I DO NOT RECOMMEND reading the current iteration of the translated novel in webnovel is... more>> that its powered by a crap of a translator "worst than google translate" who releases whenever... very lazy bum and the novel is locked in SS. Getting paid AND doing a shitty job.... great work webnovel.

I need to emphasize TO NOT READ the current "official" translation. Its sh*t and you are required to pay for shit. Look for the "unofficial" instead, they do great work but had to work in the dark. Great novel to read but unfortunately no decent translator for it. I'm rating it 3 stars just because the novel is entertaining, that's it---everything else is shite. <<less

normally I like the books better than their manhwa versions but in this case it's the opposite. He's less s*upid in the mw version and the pacing and writing are better.

i don't mind quick level ups but the MC in the beginning appears to be borderline mentally ret*rded and even when his INT goes up later he doesn't get any smarter. I'm not a fan of s*upid MC's so this story lost some of its draw for me from the start. Worse, the author tries to make him look clever... more>> by making the other characters even dumber than him, which never works well.

it's not only his every day life where he's s*upid. He's a noobs noob when it comes to games and manages to quickly mess up his stats (wants to put it all into strength so he can be more buff. Trigger eye roll). Yet while he's depicted as a noob, it's inconsistent. Like when he fights his first boss and says "as expected of a mob boss." if he's a total noob he shouldn't even know what a mob boss is, let alone what to expect from it. For anyone whose ever played any kind of an RPG game this novel will make you grind your teeth in irritation. And the authors attempt at romance was really, really bad.

now that that's said, there is a lot of action and the pacing is pretty quick, at least as far as I read (up to the locked chapters). All in all this is an alright story with shallow character build and an MC that irritates the BEEP out of me. If you don't mind idiot MCs than you might like this as long as you turn off your brain. I couldn't turn off mine so there were many times why I wanted to yell "that doesn't make any sense!" my rating up to c40 is a 2.3. <<less

You know, I definitely wouldn't call this unreadable. It just pretty creative, cliche, and stale after awhile. It is like I am reading a cheap knockoff of Seoul Station's Necromancer. I won't explain why, because it would be spoiling it, but the MC and Seoul Station's Necromancer MC are very alike, make similar actions, and the setting is almost the same.

It's not the first time a dungeon in the real world setting in a novel has been used, and it sure won't be the last. That being said, the author... more>> makes a pretty unimaginable and boring world, with few creative actions of his own.

Not terrible, but surely something you would only read on an airplane, bus, or on a boring sunday. A mediocre read that you don't need to read at all. I suggest reading other dungeon novels like Seoul Station's Necromancer or Arena <<less

I don't have the right to rate it proper since I started the novel at the point where the web comic left off, but here a some details.

Like the web comic, there are several parts which do not logically make sense. If you can ignore them it's not a big deal. However, for me it's easier to notice since the novel doesn't have the great art the comic had.

In addition the web comic seem to make a few improvements for character consistency. Web comic chapter 54 that lines up with... more>> the novel's chapter 64, there are a few lines in the web comic that make the character more badass and follows the character development made. For example, our main character blushes at some point later on in the story which really doesn't match the pain and suffering he has been through. Though, most of it is just minor details.

There is nothing too surprising or interesting about the overall story and plot. You read this novel for the badass main character and the system anyways.

Overall, much better compared to "The Returner" and "Seoul Station Necromancer" in terms of modern day and abilities.

P.S. Author seems to touch upon the social structure of the current society and how it's all locked down, but there isn't too much released yet as of chapter 92.1. Could seem interesting to learn about if the author goes more in-depth with it.

Edit: It devolves into the same power trope and main character like every other korean novel. Honestly I'm disappointed. <<less

Reading the manhua as well and I highly recommend. C50 manhua is C60 in the novel.

Thanks for translating this novel.

Eeemm..

This novel feels fresh; It's light headed and the thing wich looks ultra cool it's the fact that the plot and characters probably will be working towards understanding the nature of the dungeons

... more>> [Like the real plot is just starting, but some events are going to happen, definitely in a very interesting manner. But that's a spoiler]

[right now that issue it's not really in the mc's mind but really soon will happen. - I love this fact]

The events that happen on the start to the MC are not really about a 'plot device' wich simply aims to get from revenge to opness to finalise in compulsive character fights and mindless upgrading wich will be forgotten and taken for granted (this kind of plot sense is actively worked on, wich is cool)

{So far in my experience, that's what this novel is not really about}

What's interesting in this Novel it's like meaningful events are happening behind the scenes Wich are tied to the nature of the world.

I mean this is not simply a novel about how can we get the MC to fight more.

There's fighting but it's a part of the thing.

The main thing is the humans discovering about really why dungeons exist. Instead of taking then for granted.

Now this is the begging of the novel. And I Love short novels.

Honestly there's still potential that's the novel will turn into just compulsive fighting, but so far it's very cool development.

I like how the MC interacts with some girls the for now the human enemy's have had tr*sh mob intellect but I like how the theme and plot are interweaving.

I mean probably this novel is going to be getting significantly better for sure.

Taking about anything else is like feels like running a movie.

The novel it's entertaining and I like the way characters think about virtue.. ; This novel is not about fighting bad humans.. This Novel it's more about Human's fighting monsters. That's the vibe I get from it.

Each chapter gives me something different to look for in the next chapter. It's not simply.. When will MC gets more op. There's a significant element of that but for be the best thing is what's the mystery behind the dungeons.

And the novel really really looks like a decent honest story. Maybe the story so far looks cartoony but I really like what it's strong points are.

Man would be cool if this chapters were in a place we could comment on. Without registration. But still appreciate. Mtlnn it's awful.

Very good translation and I enjoy the notes, even try to learn Korean from them. Haha. <<less

Currently caught up on the manhwa, it's bloody awesome so far so I have high hopes for the novel. Great thanks to the translator, and to my luck for the current chapter discussion to show at top of homepage or otherwise I'd have missed this.
