Welcome to Freia. A continent perpetually torn by war. Hundreds of years ago it was ruled by Magi, people capable of magic who viewed themselves as superior to those who could not. For thousands of years they ruled over common people… but times change.

Magic is a finite resource, and with its steady depletion, the magi grew weak. Eventually they were overthrown in a great war that saw them made all but extinct. Magic fell with them, becoming taboo in every way, the object of villainy in the novels of romance and heroism.

War is a human condition, however, and it has continued to wage unerringly between the successor kingdoms and empires as the common man fights to become master of the world left behind by the magi.

Magic has gone, but power remains, now wielded in the form of firearms and manpower. Muskets echo on the fields and cannons thunder on the ocean, even more so now that the greatest kingdoms on the continent have pushed out to colonise the far-away land known as Nubissia.

Born into this world of chaos is a young man, reincarnated from a salaryman in 21st century China. Lacking the prejudice against magic, and possessing a hobbyist’s knowledge of firearms and tactics, our young protagonist forges his path in a world where magic and musket war.

this is just bad there is so much fluff that I even got tired skimming the main character is annoying and somewhat ret*rded and has a personality of a wet rag. This is a slice of life novel with some shitty action and low level magic every fifty chapters it's like the lacroix of novels but watered down just in case someone accidentally got interested. Don't bother reading it unless you like watching paint dry or reading encyclopedias.

Features of this novel: Blatant and veiled (though very lightly) sexism, some very wrong stereotypes and ideologies, beta males to highlight the alpha male protagonist, actions that betray the portrayal of the protag being "good", lots of girls he's cheating on, a lot of paragraphs on explanations of firearms I'm not willing to fully read (but I guess that's the theme of the novel), decent amount of text describing everything, oh, and magic and warfare.

Overall, it's a decently good novel. It's got the quality (read: style) (not the best,... more>> but still good) of a well written novel. There's multiple perspectives at times that shows that the protag can be wrong (a lot), which is great. The plot is there, but also not, like, it keeps going on. The length is also there. The pseudo-science (read: misinformation) is, of course, there.

(Alcohol doesn't make your warm. It can even kill you! I thought that was the most commonly busted myth.)

Recommended for people who want to see how badly misogynistic/chauvinistic/sexist one can be. Some are directly thrown at you. Some are shown by actions. Some can be read between the lines.

If you want guns and warfare, I'm sure there are a lot of other good ones. Look for JP ones.

If you want—idk—face-slapping, look for those CN xianxia ones.

If you want other straight male's dream power-trip that's less of a cancer, go look in Royal Road. They've it got all covered, both harems and monogamy. It's native English though, so for the style you'll have to adjust.

If you want em-dashes breaking up dialogue with description though, look no further.

// Came back to visit this novel and realised I haven't left a review? Or was it deleted, but I don't think I broke any guidelines. Anyway, I wrote this on a rant when I dropped this some time ago. <<less

Would rate maybe 4 star.

It's very detailed with unnecessary filler, but I like the story overall.

I actually like it better after the war starts, unlike what another review said. I'm very unsure what the first ~150 chapters is supposed to be. If this were a published novel about war, I'm pretty sure an editor would shorten it down to like 10 chapters at best. I think the problem was I was expecting a "Tales of the Reincarnated Lord" again but it's very different.

Only rated 5 star because I think the... more>> overall rating is low and props to the translator team/my love of TRL <<less

Good attempt at something that is not like the usual copy/paste garbage we get en-mass with the exact same cliche's and badguys, unfortunately the needles info-dump filler material kinda ruins what could have been much better, this has "LOTS" of filler material that other novels often like to splash down then end with "but the MC didnt care about any of that", so why dump all that useless to the reader then.

The MC for the most part is ok, certainly is not the carbon copy MC you tend to get... more>> with just a name change, however I do dislike the fact the MC thinks he is morally superior to others even tho he himself is no better, his attitude screams" do as I say, not as I do", he quickly judges others and finds them distasteful yet the MC is quick to go on killing spree's, cheat on his girldfriend, as if his own moral standards does not apply to himself, only other.

Later chapters I ended up skipping huge parts simply because there is soooooooooo much pointless filler material, it becomes a chore reading it, esp when its all throw away material, you could easily delete the filler and be left with little to read on many chapters.

It's pretty good overall..... right until the MC goes off on his military career, then the story just grinds to a boring halt with no real character progression and all the magic stuff nearly all vanishes, the whole military arc side of things feels like 1 massive throwaway chunk of irrelevant story, its dull, boring, goes on for far too long and still is, also does nothing for the MC's growth. Good effort in places, high praise for not being a copy/paste novel, but seriously let down due to needless filler and an amazingly glacial slow pace, hopefully the precursor to something better. <<less

This novel started really great. The MC was really logical and someone you can really relate to, every chapter was exciting and full of mysteries. That's why it was really disappointing when the MC drastically change his attitude in chapter 200 something. He became so conceited about him being a transmigrator and a Chinese, he talk about morality and such while giving the attitude like he was so self important that he sound so hypocrite. In the end I have to drop it because it became so toxic that it... more>> became unbearable to read. <<less

2 stars Bec of world building. okayish plot progression (we were expecting it to be a bit slow). but seriously... This novel is far inferior than the enjoyment I got from tales of reincarnated Lord, the author's previous work. It's hard to like the MC for me. One way acting really good the next just plain s*upid, the way he does his choices are pretty unbelievable as well and makes one often wonder just what kind of sh*t does the author intend to do with this character. The guy was... more>> a mature transmigrator for crying out loud but his actions and decision making doesn't even reflect this on him.

It doesn't help that the plot progression just feels dragged out too much that it borders filler levels that the author just wants to increase his word and chapter count. Anyway, it might be best to just ignore it till it gets more chapters in the future to see if it redeems itself but as it is now it's just meh. <<less

Chapter 430 Ooooh boy has it got spicy he became a general and there is traces of kingdom building because of some unrest in the kingdom I am not going into details but he has managed to create modern rifles and even trains it is a bit rushed if you don't pay attention to the timeline but this whole process took over 4 years so it's believable but a bit of a stretch and it is obviously a story and if you go throught it again you find that there... more>> is plot armour but not too thick would recommend for kingdom building ; there is no kingdom building yet at all but it is building up to it and it is very exciting

The novels has some resembalence to tales of the reincarnated lord after all they got the same author I enjoyes trl and I am enjoying this too the story is slow but if you get into the moment you will find it fun it is not action paked focusing on the more realistic life of what could actualy hapen if you went to a different world I find it hard to belive how other novels handle modern day people traveling to different world and becoming conplete psychopaths. This is a niche novel it is suited to a small group not general population of webnovel readers up to chapter (134) <<less

The writing style of this author is definitely not going to appeal to everyone, but personally I like it very much. There are lots of mundane details when the MC is doing mundane things, but some story or character development happens so detail is justified, if not really necessary. Spending time on the details slows the pacing down a bit, so the pacing is 'middle' speed, not super slow or fast. The secondary characters are decently well fleshed out as they interact more with the MC. I think the Author... more>> does a better job this time of not 'over' explaining the MC's rationale of why he does what than he did in his last series. I won't give it a rating yet until the plot gets further along, but I have read ahead pretty far on the Chinese version and so far I'd give it a solid 4 of 5. <<less

It's very wordy about mundane, boring things. Barely any action or conversations between characters, it's mostly the author "telling" the story instead of using words to "show" the story.

Reviewed 01/13/2019 at Chapter 56,

tl;dr has potential but hasn't hooked me yet

I was a Tales of the Reincarnated Lord reader and I enjoyed the kingdom building, warfare and politics the most.

Black Iron's Glory (as of Chapter 56) is still world building but it's full of potential. The setting is similar to Europe during the beginning of Imperialism. BIG takes place in a powderkeg of a continent with many countries packed closely together with ambitions for expansion. A new continent has been discovered and these countries are in a race... more>> to establish stable colonies.

Colonialism + pre-WW1 tensions is the current situation as of Chapter 56.

The main character is very, very flat and boring at the moment.

Webnovels need constant cliffhangers to tempt you to read the next chapter and in that aspect, BIG is currently failing but the world building is top class. <<less

It’s an interesting premise, and from the description, I thought it’d be a good novel about a guy going into a new world and coming across magic and delving into it for whatever reason like Throne of Magical Arcana, but I was totally off, it’s taken 120 chapters for something even slightly major to truly happen. There’s also been almost no progress when it comes to him using magic and progressing in it, it took like 50 chapters for him to actually get a journal that had magic in it,... more>> and he doesn’t become able to cast a spell till in the 80s, and even then he doesn’t use magic yet. The progress for how long the chapters are is way too slow for the kind of novel it’s description is trying to make it out to be. <<less

The plot has potential. But I've read through 100 chapter and more and it just seems like a bunch of info dumps. Maybe I'm just not the kind of reader for this, but it was very boring. The MC isn't anything special either.

This would be great for army enthusiasts. Very much recomended if you like wars and battle strategies as well as politics in its mix. If you're not, well obviously you should hurry and move on. Yku'll know if you'll like it after 60 chapters or so. You'll get familliarize with the pacing and MC's personality.

The family life of the MC is also realistic in a way. MC is practical, very, and it comes with good and bad repurcussions. For me, the only downside is that althought I like outstanding battle... more>> or war scenes, the war is too long for continous reading. I had fave chapters and honestly, chapters I skipped (war scenes). <<less

Pretty mediocre. It starts out kind of interesting. But then the war happens, and by god is it incredibly boring. Pretty much, after he leaves the town, the writing goes down hill, and in the end becomes generic harem fest.

In general, like many series, it start off okay and interesting, but slowly became more and more boring.

Just another average power creep harem fest. I would have rated it 3.5, but since harems are terrible overall, -.5 stars.

... more>> Anyways, *** adventures ho~~~~! *Rolls eyes*

Overall, I would say if you really, really need a filler series, then read this. If you have plenty to read already, skip. <<less

First of all, the translation and command of English is really good. As for the writing, the author sometimes goes a little bit too overboard with the info-dump and there is almost no dialogue, which makes it rather heavy to read.

The world building and character building is well done, but after reading some of the other reviews about the MC being morally bankrupt, a hypocrite beyond reason and someone killing without reason and remorse, I was a bit hesitant to continue reading. But I'm giving it a chance since I'm... more>> only at chapter 16.
That being said, he loves his younger siblings and cares for his parents and friends, just not his older brother who's an idiot anyway. And a person who loves and cares for his family and friends can't be all bad, right? <<less

Was a good start, but then it deteriorated. The MC's superiority monologues is a huge turn off and the guy doesnt act like a modern man at all for his previous age.

At ch. 85 the MC is showing signs of becoming more and more like the MC, Leylin, from warlock of the magus world - A person who doewnt care about consequences of his actions. The difference between Leylin and Claude is that one isnt a hypocrite, while the other does what he wants without superficial words.

Except for that, I... more>> would say the world building is great and there is a nice and slow pace. Good descriptions, which allows us to imagine the different events <<less

I see someone else has already posted a review about this but I'll still put mine up too. The spoiler section below is the reason why I've rated this story two stars and moved it to my Never Again reading list. It's two stars instead of one because up till this point, I was really enjoying this series. I didn't get super excited for new chapters but this was a quality story with a rare, slow pace. It was kind of a breath of fresh air in comparison to most... more>> of the translated works I read. That said, the slow pace and slice of life aspects kinda dragged on me. Some people love slice of life stories but at least for me those stories live and die by their execution. This one wasn't great or terrible on that front.

Another issue I had with the story revolved around some of Claude's choices. Although he was for the most part a very believable character and I've learned not to underestimate the level of s*upidity humans can reach, some of Claude's choices didn't feel believable. I just wasn't always able to suspend my disbelief.

Inspite of this story's flaws, I had 138 chapters worth of entertainment. In comparison to most of the stories on I find on NU, that's already pretty good. If you can move past the flaws I've described then I highly recommend Black Iron's Glory. If what I've mentioned makes you think you won't like it, you're probably better off not wasting your time unless you just can't find anything else to read.

Spoiler

He was reminded of all the novels he'd read back on earth. He usually found himself disbelieving the ability of the antagonists to actually be so ghastly. He doubted people were capable of such bestiality. He'd discussed it with his old boss, in fact. The discussion had been somewhat more abstract, however, concerning the different fundamental values between the Chinese and most foreigners.

His boss felt their own values were obviously superior, so much so, in fact, that merely suggesting they could be compared to foreigners was an insult. Claude had questioned how he could believe that if the stories about their behaviour so frequently showed they behaved much better than the average Chinese.

His boss had quite literally spat that he should not believe so-called experts. Sure, the Chinese were far from perfect, he knew no one who claimed they were, but they had a moral baseline, a fundamental set of axioms and principles that were to be adhered to at all costs. The foreigners did not. The Chinese had two thousand years of civilisation which taught them the proper decorum of public life, such as to respect their elders. He'd never seen a single foreign teaching that taught the same.

They were barely any better than savages. They did their neighbours in for the smallest profit and dragged people to court of things as insignificant as sneezes. They harped on about 'democracy' and 'freedom' but all they had, and wanted, was the freedom to do everyone else in for their own benefit. If he doubted anything his boss said, he could just look at crime statistics. The absolute numbers were several times worse for them despite their population being much smaller than Chinas. It was clear as day who was superior.

Claude could not argue with the man on the spot. And his experiences in this life, while having failed to discredit the foreigners' values, did validate his own. He'd respected his parents and elders, cared for his siblings, and stood with and in defence of the family in its time of need. His wretch of a borther, however, had done nothing but try to enrich himself at his family's quite literal expense.

The bastard was barely more than a dog. Arbeit, at the very least, was no fool, Claude had to admit. He knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it with the least amount of effort on his part. He'd gotten his job with Sir Fux by riding his father's coattails, after all. He'd contributed only the tiniest amount towards earning his position.

He'd remained the filial son only on the service, and only because at the time he'd believed he would eventually suceed his father as the town's chief secretary and inherit the lion's share of his father's wealth, as well as the mansion.

He was not happy with the lion's share, however, which was why he hated his siblings with a fervor even religious fanatics wold find frightening. They were nothing but leaches stealing his rightful inheritance. He'd feared his father, however, and that had kept him from simply killing them. Later, his fear of his younger brother and added to that and it had driven him out of the house.

The moment his father was arrested, however, his dreams were smashed. He knew his brother and mother would bleed his entire inheritance to get him back or do anything for him, so he panicked. He had to find a way to get his inheritance before they had a chance to throw it away. First he had to break away from the family so he wouldn't be dragged down with them, however.

If his father had been tried and convicted of endagering the crown and lost his status as a dignitarian, he would be stained as well. If he were still associated with his household at that time, and tried to maintain the facade of the filial son, he'd have to take over his father's role in the household and look after his mother and siblings using his inheritance. He'd lose everything.

He'd rather die than do that, however, and his only other option was to break from the household entirely. To disown himself and form his own household. Each male adult had to register his own household and pay taxes for said household. If his father was executed however, the Ferd household would have no adult male beside him, and so he would have to step in as its head. If he refused to however, and registered his own household, he would have no responsibility for their financial burdens. In doing so, however, he would also lose his claim to the household's inheritance, and his entirely life had been an obsession of it, so he would not accept that either.

He had to wait to hear what would happen to his father before he could decide whether to break from the household or not. In the meantime, however, he could beg, rob, and steal as much money from his mother as he could so that if he did have to break from the household, he would not leave empty-handed. He could only get to his mother's things, however, such as her personal fund and her jewellery.

The majority of the house's money, and the mansion itself, was own in his father's name, and would have been frozen the moment he was arrested, so he could do nothing with any of it, and couldn't even get his hands on most of it, frozen or not.

Ideally for him, his father would be executed, or sentenced to life in prison, but his assets and family would be spared. In that case he would take up the household and claim his inheritance, then kick Claude out. Once he was gone, he could do with the money what he wanted. He knew how to twist his mother around his pinky, and his younger brother and sister were too young to do anything.

He'd turn his sister into his servant, which was all she was ever going to be good for, anyway, and kick his little brother out the moment he turned eighteen. The snowhound could be turned into cheap meat for the slums, or sold off in the market if it was obedient enough.

The thought that his father would emerge from the whole ordeal, legally at least, unscathed had never even crossed his mind. It was the worst possible outcome, especially considering the course of action he'd started taking. He'd spent the whole of the previous night figuring out what to do, and had finally decided to play the fool and beg his parents for forgiveness for his s*upidity at getting 'scammed'.

He knew his mother would lap it up. That old wench believed anything that preserved him in her good graces, but he didn't know if his father would. He knew Claude wouldn't believe him even if everything he said was true, but all that really mattered was that his parents got back on his side. He knew that, as much as Claude distrusted and hated him, he would never do anything that went against their parents' wishes, so as long as they accepted his apology and forgave him, the little brat's hands would be tied.

Okay, finished all the translated parts and I feel like strangling the author for going on an hiatus.

The book is as many have said, interesting and worth the read.

Some would say there are info dumps, yeah for sure, but they aren't important info, so you can skip those parts. The author repeats info that are important when they are needed anyways.

Some would say the MC is an hypocrite. Lol. Okay. But he, on several occasions said he doesn't feel anything towards the people on this world. Like, to him they... more>> don't feel real Real. He even said it that it feels the same way it would feel if two Chinese men that went to the same school meet each other abroad. To him, these people, even those that he is close to, are like strangers deep down. I think he only felt real connection to only one person later on.

Is this a kingdom building book? Well, kinda.

He joined the army and worked hard, and had a few good luck. But he soon got embroiled in the politics of the kingdom without his own active actions. And he ends up trying his best to not end up as cannon fodder or used by these powerful people. With the way the book is going... he would end up ruling. Currently he is already controlling his own territory and yes, this is where the kingdom building starts from.

OP and Magic... Nah. He isn't OP, almost got killed several times. He does learn magic but magic is banned by the general public and he is in the army, there is no way he is using magic without getting caught... And funny enough, humans already wiped out magi, no matter how strong he is, he is mortal in front of a gun anyways, so he doesn't really get far with magic, he focuses on tactics instead and it served him well. So, he isn't OP.

Spoiler

Harem? Hmm in a way... He doesn't get all girls that come to him, but while at war, you get posted all around the continent and even on another continent and during these times, getting laid is normal. He later meets only two out of these women he laid... and he holds on to them, mainly because one of them had gotten pregnant after they split and the other was the only lady he actually loved... His actual married wife was someone he married because she was wife material and he won't have to be worried about his household while away at war...

[collapse]

So, I guess that covers most of it.

As for how good the book is. 4/5.

I took away a star because info dump, while they can be skimmed through, are still a pain to read sometimes. <<less

i made an account to write this review, it’s a good story generally speaking and the world is complex and interesting.

the problems however are many,

... more>> the pro China stance anti foreigner stance that the MC takes of ‘they’re all worse than me’ is one, but hey that’s a character flaw I can ignore it but not the author doing it.

my main issue however is the mistakes the author has made about their own story, sometimes within a couple paragraphs a detail will be given only to be overwritten and forgotten in a later paragraph, this has gotten worse as it has progressed. The MC has a holier than thou attitude to people and complains about his cheating ex but strings along a girl at home and sleeps with multiple others without concern, which hey fall in love but just write a letter and say, hey it’s over, sorry, or have the decency to say don’t wait for me.

at one point MC is asked if killing haunts him, he says it doesn’t, internal monologue he explains that it’s because they’re not the same kind of human as him. They aren’t earth humans so they’re different (implied worse) Now that raises some flags.
so yeah I mean, don’t read this is my advice it’s probably not great to support this kind of author in my mind <<less
