ExR’s summary:

An average, ordinary university student had his first life burned away in a painful death from a fire, causing him to transmigrate into a prince of another universe. However, never did he expected that his younger brother, who he fiercely protected and ultimately brought to the throne, would be the one to betray him. Upon being on the brink of death after suffering three years of torture, he was thrown into a river.

Scarred physically and mentally, he ended up being washed up at an eccentric yet peaceful place he had never heard of before. Having nowhere to go, he began working as a helper in the government office, apathetic about his life.

Will he be able to heal from his traumas and rediscover the beauty of life?

Tldr: A healing story of a transmigrator who slowly recovers from his trauma, finding happiness and fluffy romance in a strange yet peaceful place.

Author’s summary:

An average, normal university student transmigrates into the royal family in another world, where he becomes one of the successors of the throne. Life in the palace is inevitably difficult though, what with all the scheming enemies around him. This man’s only wish in this world is to be able to protect his “younger brother,” and for that, he’ll do anything–whether by hook or by crook–to ensure his brother’s safety and have him succeed the throne.

The man never once expected, though, that the person whom he swears to protect would be the one to stab him in the back. He got locked in a dungeon where he was tortured for three years. And when he was on the brink of death, his body was thrown away into the river.

When he wakes up, he finds himself in an eccentric and peaceful place, where everyone is suspiciously more than what they seem…

From the author's final notes: "Hope Nan Ge Er and Mo Shu can still be an inspiration for everyone to believe there are many things delightful in life."

This note sums up the value of the novel very well.

I loved the setting, the pace of the plot, the plot twists and the pace at which we receive information, slow burn just how I like it.

There's more fluff than angst but when you think about the premise of the MC, they balance each other out actually.

Spoiler

This is one of the novels where the MC needs to rely on the ML for a lot of things, but while in other novels this is an irritating features in my opinion because the author implies or says that the MC has strength and resolve on his own and they magically disappear once he gets a bit infatuated, the author makes it clear from the beginning that the MC is a normal guy who first rose to a position with a certain power then plummeted to the bottom of society. (There are graphic mentions of torture so beware of that.) So with this premise I wasn't irritated when the MC started to rely on the ML for his happiness because the MC was so throughly depressed and suicidal I myself wanted to take care of him and let him see the delightful things of life bit by bit until he recovered. So the co-dependency of their relationship didn't bother me.

[collapse]

In conclusion, the novel is short but very sweet, nicely paced, with good characterization and at times it's very psychological. I highly suggest reading it on E/R website and to indulge in the comments, it helps processing some of the most emotional, psychological chapters.

For the thirsty readers:
Spoiler

there're a few kisses here and there, so so sweet, and a bit of smut at the end, with everyone still in-character. I enjoyed it very much and I think you will too.

I truly love this novel (o´ω`o) it has this heartfelt feeling since MC is gradually recorvering from his traumas and wounds through the help of the people surrounding him and finding 'peace' and 'warmth'. The outlook in life is deeper too, it's really heartwarming since MC and ML accepts and still love each other no matter their 'flaw', I'mma emphasize that one b*tch, which author-nim really penned well since reading this thoroughly I find myself immersing in it through the bones. The characters are fleshed out, no plain or flat... more>> ones, every character has this significant value, creating this deep link and heart warming interaction with both MC and ML. The novel also leans more on 'slice of life' and has the town mystery kind of thing which is resolved quickly. The sweet fluffs and domestic life of MC and ML just gets me diabetes lol. No major ups and down and just a road with bumps, furthermore I just want to say new experience because of the unique plot. Gosh, to be honest, this is a straight out GEM although not so magnificient nor flashy, it's penned well and cut out intricately ((≧⊿≦) I really want to say more to compliment this short novel cauz 54 chapts only but it still flutters my heart and makes me tear up. I praise author-nim, I really do (′▽`〃) <<less

This is a very well-written story about healing and finding oneself after tragedy, pain, and betrayal. I loved reading about Nan Ge Er's healing process, the relationships he built within the community, and his growing romance with Mo Shu. The mystery behind the city adds another dimension to the whole story. In a genre dominated by cliches, revenge-driven characters, dog blood drama, and romanticized depictions of abusive relationships, this novel stands out and takes another approach to the "MC transmigration to another world" trope. I love everything about this!

Moreover, the... more>> translation is very good - easy to read with minimal issues in grammar, syntax, and diction.

Translation: 5/5

Plot: 5/5

Characters: 5/5

The summary doesn’t give you much of an idea of what’s coming, which is nice, cause the story is a journey of fluff.

Spoiler

Potential spoilers!!! MC is a transmigrator who gives his all to scheme his younger brother into kingship. The younger brother betrays MC, who is imprisoned and tortured for three years before being thrown off a cliff. Dramatic, but succinct. That’s not the story though. MC gets rescued and finds himself in a weird town of strangely skilled folk ruled by a flighty spendthrift, who is even more skilled and handsome to boot. Meet ML. It’s a long slow roll as you find out more about the mysterious town and it’s inhabitants, with most of the focus on MC settling into a simple, but happy and peaceful life. ML is also there to look nice and dote on MC. There’s some suspension of disbelief needed, but the plot is nicely done, with tragic bits as MC comes to terms with his past and learns of ML’s past, mixed with the two throwing dog food and learning to trust each other. There’s not much conflict, it’s just about acceptance and loving each other given the conditions you have. There’s tears, laughter, joy, sorrow, and love. Like MC said, ‘what a blessing’ this story is.

I finished this book in a day, just what I wanted and needed.

Much of this book hits my sweet spots. Concise but still with a bit of mystery surrounding the characters and places. It's focused, and in its shortness achieves much with little. Its exposition is a mix of show and tell, which while I prefer showing more, its not extremely detrimental to the story, and in fact can be considered a part of the theme itself: the past is like a story, another world that exists without you. What's... more>> more important is now, the present. Even though the beginning was a bit of an information dump without any actual exploring, it makes sense. The entire point was that it has passed, and is over. A new life in a new place with a new identity. Even if it haunts Nan Ge Er, he has to slowly accept it's not part of him anymore.

The Slice of Life genre is a (one of the many) soft spot of mine, especially if it has a twist, like, y'know, performing mundane tasks and daily activities in a strange unknown environment.

Spoiler

The fact the people of the town are all extraordinary is showed through hints and protagonist observations, with the ultimate secret being that the people are essentially chosen ones, special ones.

I consider that place to be literally Paradise for Nan Ge Er, as he died twice already. Paradise in the way that the place, as the last few lines of the book say, is untouched even as the rest of the world is in chaos. Paradise in how the people are chosen, and outsider mortals are considered beneath them, ants beneath Mo Shu's feet. Its a bit of a twisted paradise but the point stands, and its not like the book ever tried to convince you otherwise. From the beginning to the realization of Mo Shu's complete disregard of human life, and own trained inability to understand why he should care, brought up as a beast since birth, hidden behind a smile, Nan Ge Er notes how terrifying and unnatural it is, but accepts it eventually. Because he is finally in Paradise.

[collapse]

In this place, he finds the will to continue living, and accepts the good and the bad equally. Lucky with how he washed up still barely alive, given the freedom of living in Guang Tian, and well deserved with how he desperately, without neither a clear goal nor concrete ambition, still desired to survive. I think overall, this story is a great example of showing what it wants to say in the most balanced way possible, with acknowledgement to the downfalls of life and treating oneself and one's loved ones above all else. A story of healing, if you may. Of forgetting and rebuilding. Now, that comes down to the characters. Who I'm regretful to say, didn't quite stick with me as much as other novels. The main character is fine, but not incredibly new or memorable, and I have personal morally ambiguous feelings about Mo Shu. The characters overall weren't my favorites, but I personally didn't find them painful either.

Spoiler

I will say though, that the surrealist aspect is a bit of a double edged sword. It creates a weird environment for the main character to fufill basic slice of life activities in, which is a plus for me. But can be considered a bit dissonant with the overall theme of the story. I think that Mo Shu's backstory is almost satirical? The intentions of the author is a little unclear on that point, though I personally interpreted it as a sick twist and acknowledgement on selfishness of hapiness and being ignorant to a world that wouldn't be able to understand you either. A lot of moral ambiguities in this, and I'm not sure if it's done intentionally or not. But I still did enjoy the story overall.

[collapse]

Slice of life or a slice of lung.

Finished it on one day! ♡

I want to thank the people who picked and translated this novel. You guys are awesome!

The tenderness and the peacefulness of this story made me feel satisfied. There was no angst or anything that would make me frustrated and then just go on a rampage. ? I really like the MC's way of thinking. The ML is very caring. ? (He does have some possessive tendencies but the MC understands it. I understand it.)

So glad I read this book. ♡ Super meng. ✨

Now, that was new. The story had an interesting mix of fluff and some things in between that made it quite satisfactory. I agree that the description is a bit misleading. Just for reference, if you're looking for a story about power struggle and transmigration hero trying to make a change in the world this is not that type of story.

The angle of the plot is interesting, it's the first time I've encountered such setting. The pacing was good and the flow of events was well-timed. Although there wasn't much... more>> deep impact when it comes to character development, their path was pretty much straight and laid out cleanly, it doesn't leave the reader lacking or empty. This novel is such an amazing, satisfying read. It actually took me two tries to get into this novel - the first time I hadn't read many Chinese novels, but when I had more experience with the stories and characters, I fell in love with this one.

I cried, I laughed, I wished it would never end. There's something special about just going along on a journey with a character, following as he learns to feel, love, and live again.

The translation is also wonderfully done, with obvious care and dedication. I... more>> hope there's more out there by this author I can read in the future! <<less

Really great novel, with a very sweet progression for the MC both in his mind and with his partner. I think where some people struggle with this one is that they are taking the setting more literally than I think it's intended. I believe this is very much a fantastical setting meant as metaphor, as a backdrop to the mental healing process for the MC. I won't go too deep into for spoiler reasons, but I just personally think it was a very fun and ingenious choice on the part... more>> of the author. <<less

I was very skeptical of many things in the story at first. But when I realized that the premise did not promise me any action or angst, I started to adjust my mentality to read it as the soothing healing story it is. And when I did that, it became amazing. I feel healed from reading such a nice, fleshed out but still kinda supernatural story. It is not like other novels where things are at extremes at all times, it feels balanced (although the setting is pretty extreme, I... more>> still loved the idea of a country like Guang Tian existing). It is indeed not a perfect story, however, I loved reading it and for me that is all that matters. Recommended! <<less

A very calming and healing story!

Even tho they suffered so much, both in their own ways, I'm really happy that both our Nan ge er and Mo shu got their well deserved HE in the end! ❤ This story is very good to read if u want a break from other more hectic stories. It's a fun slife of life with a lotta comedy in it. There's also a very cool plot with interesting elements.

All in all, I definitely recommend this story to everyone! It was a nice journey... more>> and I'm very satisfied with the end.

5/5 Slice of Life, Healing, BL.

A lot of the negative reviews seem to focus on how MC doesn't take revenge on the people who betrayed him, and how there's no face slapping.

And there is a simple reason for this: it's not a revenge novel.

... more>> Its about MC trying to live his life after everything that he went through, from his first death to the three years of torture that he went through.

After going through so much he's kind of tired of it all. He doesn't try to live but doesn't try to die either. The story is about how bit by bit, he begins to want to live.

Beautiful story, 4.5 from me. Amazing translation.

I've already read it multiple times and I just can't get enough. <<less

My comfort danmei. Always reread this whenever I'm on reading slump.

I love the ML so much, he might look like he doesn't care at first but he's that kind of person who talks less do more.

I love MC's journey on how he sees life, meeting people are kind to him, fall in love with someone, trusting someone despite of what happened in the past.

his personality had a very wide gap from a sweet silly and kind person then to a split cold blooded killer in drop of a hat! Just kills innocent ppl like nothing. The author did explain why and how he become like that and given his back ground environment, but still it’s abit of wide gap for me

This story was wonderful. It started a bit confusing for me as I didn't even know the protagonist’s name for 3 or 4 chapters. It was sad to read all the hardships and cruelty that Nan ge er had to go through. But then he arrived at a mysterious place, Guang Tian, a peaceful county where everyone seemed to be happy. He was taken care of by the people there, he was given a place to stay and work. He was clumsy in his job, but the people didn't mind, and instead of getting mad at him they helped him. He was disfigured because of torture, yet no one didn't even mention his appearance. And then he met the magistrate Mo Shu.

I really liked the interactions between Mo Shu-shiansheng and Nan Ge Er. They started as complete strangers, the employer and the employee, and they gradually got closer to each other. I loved Nan Ge Er's inner dissing, it was always so funny. And their relationship grew naturally until they both fell in love with each other.

Along the way the revelation of both main characters' background and the hidden truth that Guang Tian held added to the story and made me care even more for Mo Shu and Nan Ge Er. It was a lovely story and I enjoyed reading it a lot.

What can I say, other than I totally and completely loved this novel!!! The word healing comes to mind when I finished reading this novel. The MC's transformation of going through the motions to actually wanting to live was just fantastic. It was paced nicely by the author.
