Fu Jia wanted him.

Fu Jia was unwelcome in this house, so much that even the servants were allowed to scold him as they wished. His father’s wife hated him to his very bones but he wasn’t bothered at all. They could try to make him leave the house with all their might but that would never happen. As long as he remained here, he would still be undefeated.

The first warmth Fu Jia felt in this house had came from Lu QiAn. Although they have never spoken to each other before, and Lu QiAn had no idea who he really was, Fu Jia couldn’t help but wanting to get close to him because of that one trivial matter…

This is a story of how the gong taught the shou to court him from start to end.

This is a story of how two children found redemption in each other.

The two lead's character constructs never moved beyond their presets. I read almost to the end--there is absolutely no character evolution or growth. Further,
Spoiler

I greatly disliked the story resolution, hugely loathed the ML's actions, and, by last act in the novel, no longer gave a F about what happened to the MC

So I decided to Mtl this after reading the first translated chapter. I usually have a hard time reading mtled text for too long, but I ended up reading Slow-Witted in one go without stopping. I tend not to be an overly critical reader and I'm sure a lot of was lost in translation, but for me the story was an enjoyable one and I thought the author did a great job at writing it.

The first half of Slow-Witted is the MC (shou) chasing after the ML (gong). The MC... more>> in the this novel is very active in the relationship. He's the one who confesses first, after being rejected he tries different strategies to court the ml, and he's also the instigator for the more s*xual side of their relationship. Of course, the ML doesn't stay passive, but it takes a little while before he comes to terms with his feelings for the MC and realizes that he wants them to have a future together. The story is written mostly in the mc's point of view but from what little we get of the ml's inner thoughts you can tell he's pretty possessive and maybe even a slight bit yandere. If that's not your thing though that's fine because he never acts on those thoughts.

I have to admit that I cried a few times while reading this. There's a few parts of the story that are pretty sad, but the fact that I cried is a good thing because it means that even through Mtl I was really able to get immersed in the storyline. And speaking of crying, this is probably one of the few bl novels I've read where the ML actually cries. It's only once and it's not a full on sobbing but man it really hit me hard.

Even though I really liked the novel I've given it four stars because I felt like something was missing. And I don't know if it's because I didn't read the extra chapter but I also felt like the ending was good but not enough and that it didn't completely satisfy me.

All in all Slow-Witted is an enjoyable novel and I definitely recommend it. <<less

Hi everyone,

I'm dreaming mooncake, the new translator for this novel. It's my first time translating and I'm doing it as I read, so I have no idea where this story will go (beyond skimming a few spoiler reviews). But I fell in love with Fu Jia's character and seeing as this project got bounced around four times in the span of of 3-4 years, I really hope to help give English readers some closure.

Please do give this novel a try if you like angsty 1v1 HE stories. The author... more>> does a great job at conveying the main characters' emotions, and she really knows how to deliver an impactful scene. Oftentimes, male leads are a bit of an one-dimensional prince charming, but I don't find this to be the case with Lu Qi'an, who is every bit as sincerely flawed as Fu Jia (our story's national treasure).

Please do note, however, that this isn't a face-slapping novel. There is karmic retribution to multiple characters, but justice will not always be served. The author likes to torture her readers as much as her characters (ಥ‿ಥ) <<less

If it was just on romance and smut alone I'd rate it a 5, but the story itself is very... frustrating. The series of events kinda pissed me off, actually. Like readers before me said, MC simply suffered too much, and for once it's not really ML making him suffer. Its life, its plot, it's the other characters, it's the author.

Spoiler

So in the beginning MC was already in a pretty crappy situation (honestly no wonder he clung onto ML wouldve) and he saw ML as his only light. He was pretty miserable and I felt very bad for him. As the story continued, things got better when ML and him got together (by the way theres nothing rlly wrong with ML you'll prob like him actually it's just the plot was destined to fck MC over, ML was powerless).

This period of time was very cute but ig was also kind of uncomfortable because it was going so well, it was destined to go wrong. In the end sht indeed hit the fan, MC future that he finally got on track was ruined, and ML was shipped off. Its blurry in my head but they were separated for many years until ML got enough foothold to go to MC. In this time he tried to convince his parents about the relationship and still failed, but decided to be with MC anyway. With this being said I feel like ML couldve gon to MC earlier idk. But he never did anything wrong to him in any case. On MC side his life rlly fell to sht. Prob what made me mad the most wasnt the separation but that after MC finally got his grades together, bc of all that happened it went down the drain and this showed in the future prospects like his job and lifestyle.

His character also underwent a drastic change. From a proud sunny boy to someone very withdrawn and sort of going through the motions of life. The change was really too drastic for me I didn't know how to feel. Even the fact that it was revealed that ML sending people to help MC during the separation made me sad, because like that meant even MCs friends were arranged for him. So like your an adult with bad job prospects living in a small apartment, no family, arranged friends, and have not talked to your only lover in years. MC got the short end of the stick no matter how I thought about it.

Even when ML came back, MC was still very somber and sad. Like someone before me said, it felt like the happiness he achieved later wasnt proportional to the sadness he went through prior. It was just a drop in the bucket. Again, I dont blame the ML he was really helpless and he never did anything wrong. It was more the author said he had to suffer so he did. Very exhausting. Tbh the ending was a HE, but it didn't feel like one? MC and ML reunited, but MC lost just about everything else.

I'm just here to give a very kind forewarning to not READ THE COMMENTS unless you want spoilers. People really be throwing (sometimes misleading) spoilers without putting a spoiler tag T_T.

Anyways...

My head kind of hurts because I sobbed a little too much. So I'll make it brief.

Pros:

  • A very heart-wrenching but sweet-inducing love with some nice ~steamy~ moments.
  • A very likable MC --> You just want to treasure him
  • ML has flaws--he is not perfect, or can beat anyone that stands against him. But he loves MC unconditionally and is willing to give up anything for him. He is MC's pillar and love.
Cons/Complaints:

  • Wish the author went more into depth and tied up the few loose ends. First spoiler is about MC "family".
    Spoiler

AKA wish that wretched family got retribution for what they did to the MC. I can sympathize with them, but I will NEVER FORGIVE them. They threw MC away in a dark room and had him treated worse than a s*ave. He was condemned at and physically abused (used to get burned by cigarettes regularly). I have never agreed with the motto that because you are related to someone, you must suffer the retribution. I really wish the author went more in depth with this, because the MC for sure has scars that need to be addressed.

    [collapse]
  • ML is not perfect and has flaws. Some of which, I'm not a big fan of. At all. First spoiler is about ML relations with MC "family". Second spoiler is more major (and at the bottom of the cons, but remember it still applies to this bullet point), so read at your own risk.
    Spoiler

Look, I'm not expecting ML to completely give up his family, but he has to acknowledge his family are all cruel human beings. His aunt allowed and encouraged the abuse of the MC. The sick/terminally ill cousin that ML cares for is also one who encouraged the beatings and abuse of the MC and isolated him. He's a terminally ill person? So. The. f*ck. What. All he does is crib and not take his medicine and complain about his life. If you're really that determined to live, stop acting like a spoiled brat who doesn't take his life at face value. I get he was bitter about his tragic life (this was caused by MC's mother), but there was NO need to make someone even live worse than you because of that. God, what a black heart. And if we get started on ML's father... Whew... My blood pressure will rise. He is. even. worse.

    [collapse]
  • This novel made me completely treat MC as my own child who can't suffer grievances. I feel like I have a filter in my eyes where I believe no one is good enough for the MC. I agree with the reviews here that MC suffered so much. So frustratingly much without any good resolution for those who made him suffer. Sure, that's reality. But I'm reading a book for god's sake T-T. I took off a star because of that.
Spoiler

[This is continuation from the second "con" spoiler] Why does ML still associate himself with these people? Sure he gradually distances himself off near the end (and even planned to break things off gradually/completely before the separation), after realizing this family would never be convinced to love the MC. But... In my opinion, they have no right to even look at the MC. Another question. If ML noticed MC from the beginning and took his terminally ill cousin to the courtyard just so MC could see him from the servant's quarter and it would be a "mutual interaction", why not investigate MC's situation further? Especially since he considered him a friend at that time?

In my opinion, it wouldn't take effort for ML to find how badly treated the MC was. It was obvious, and the family did nothing to hide it. But he just stood there and proclaimed himself as a "objective bystander" who neither hated or liked the MC. Like how contradicting is that? If you really considered him as a friend, then you would've TREATED him as one. To top it off, ML stood in the sunshine pampering the cousin while MC just watched in the shadows. What. The. f*ck. Of course, ML acknowledges that he just wanted to show off his good sides to the MC in the courtyard because he knew MC was watching, but then later realized how depressing that must have been for the MC... But like.... Can we talk about the severe dependence and inferiority complex that developed in the MC as a result? I just wish all these issues were addressed. It makes me infuriated. Sure ML makes up for his past actions through his unconditional love and pampering for the MC later, but that makes me all the more upset.

Why didn't the ML notice sooner? Act sooner? Especially since he saw him as a "friend". I just feel there's a little bit of a characterization hole here. ML said that he asked MC to move out (of his wretched family's home) so he could get out of the shadows and stand by himself because he wanted the best for the MC... But why was the ML so much of a bystander when he literally went to his aunt's house and played with his cousin the courtyard just so he could silently feel MC's presence (which, also I may add, cured his insomnia).

I get he is cold and taciturn, but I can't use that archetype to justify his actions when he supposedly thought of the MC and was comforted by his presence. It just doesn't make sense, and I honestly think this is a fault in the author's writing rather than the ML HIMSELF. I really like ML--and I reluctantly accept him as MC's lover because ML treated and treats MC very well once MC moved out of the house--but his beginning actions were VERY contradictory, especially as he opens up later in the novel about how he felt about the MC from the start.

[collapse]

Conclusion

Pretty good if you're looking to read a nice heart-wrenching story. I enjoyed it. BUT the HE isn't fully HE. It leaves you a bit unsatisfied. Sure MC and ML attained love, but at what cost for the MC? He got happiness but also suffered with no resolution. The abuse is never fully addressed and no one really atones, which is one of the reasons I'm a little frustrated with this novel despite my enjoyment.

For me, it was probably the best chinese novel I read in a while. Though as Legend already mentioned I also had a feeling of something missing in the end. Though I'm kind of surprised by the rating (4, 2??) because it's much better than other better rated novels

Spoiler

The end is satisfactory, but with what both protagonists went through and the clear signs of PTSD that Fu Jia depicts I was certainly missing more communication and healing. There were some loose ends that could have been solved in regards to the family situation. But I really liked that the ML was considerate and consent was thematized repeatedly throughout the novel. Lu QiAn as the ML diverts from the general overbearing garbage ML without character depth or development. He, as well as Fu Jia, is a well rounded character with a backstory and agency. Though their love has some co-dependancy problems, it was in line with their life/love drama.

[collapse]

All in all its a very beautiful read (even with mtl which is normally hell) and the love story touched me very much (I cried a lot >_<) <<less

I don't know why people would just base their ratings on the first chapter only!

This story has a good background and the writing style is calming and soothings with a tinge of mysteriousness in it.

The plot, by no way, is it hurried, and is the perfect pace for a story where the MC and ML will gradually come to understand each other.

... more>> And the novel description merely hints at it, but our MC, Fu Jia, is reincarnated.

The characters are well developed, not too OP or anything, and they have reasons for acting the way they do so.

I believe that you can't base this novel just by the first chapter.

After all, it's only the beginning of a masterpiece. <<less

This story is a good thing to start with if you're fedding up with cliché story line. While you might be thinking that it's cute and beautiful, at the same time it's very wrenching. It's not that bad though, but if you're an emotional person yourself, crying isn't an exception.

There are some unsatisfactory from me as well, anyway I decided to put it into spoiler. Maybe it's not actually a spoiler.

Spoiler

after finishing the story, I feel that the anguish and suffering of the MC doesn't have enough compensatory for it. I just feel like he suffered so much, so much that even the love of the ML cannot refill that hole.

Beautiful realy beautiful

Though it seems is not for the weak hearts like me but seriously I cried buckets because of the story the MC I wish I can take him in my arms and coaxe him till the end of time but come on he doesn't need after there is the ML by his side and I am realy happy and reassured for that (I can sleep with my mind in peace) I know it's nothing but fiction but I realy felt like I was there in each moment... more>> I felt the sorrows of not understanding how the MC could not feel the sadness and how his EQ was like a child since he had no one to teach him and how he found his only pillar in life I also felt the angst of separation for those 7 years and how much the MC suffered and how he dealt with being apart from ml.

I felt the ML was everything for the MC a mentor a father a mother a brother a friend a boyfriend a lover and finaly a family his supporte for the MC and the mc's support for him
like how his teacher liu said in one the chapters how they have only their each other in their eyes and how there is an air of exclusion around them when they r together

I wish that there is more but what can we do we should only thank the author for giving such a beautiful story so for those who r not sure if they should read this and for those who r like me unwilling to read a sad story I tell u just give it a go don't stop by the first chapter but continue it gets better by each word

That's it though I feel like I can write more :p but let's stop at this

Ps: thank you to the translations for the early chapters though I m sorry I had to mtl it since I couldn't wait for the rest <<less

Wow, I really liked this novel! Not often that I manage to read the entire thing in Chinese since I usually give up halfway.

The MC was not a pushover and his directness and courage was really great to read. For once it's not the ML doing the chasing but the MC and that resulted in some really sweet scenes.

There's fluff but there's also a lot of angst esp regarding MC home situation and ML history. When the drama came for them, I wanted to throw rocks at those people.

The one... more>> thing I didn't really like, and I also notice that it's a popular thing to happen in CN BL novels was that
Spoiler

there's a separation towards the ending of the book and a reuniting after like 7 years. There's always a major conflict resulting in a separation for YEARS before we can get that happy ending. It's happened in at least 2 other CN novels I've read and I don't like it. I wanted them to overcome everything together and go on their merry way, not to SEPARATE.

[collapse]

But that ending was a satisfying HE. Just 1 last questions lingered
Spoiler

like what was lin fengxun's response to all these, was he even still alive at the end?

[collapse]

Overall plot was refreshing and there was never a dull moment. Love it. <<less

This is one of the novels, if you leave it halfway it'll come to haunt you in your dreams because you'll not know what might have or haven't happened to the characters.

The writer has put some cliches in this but other than that this novel is tragically beautiful. The main characters emotions, the background story, side characters... They all are so well put together.

This review is to remind myself, whenever many years later if I encounter this novel again, to HOLD ON. This novel is imperfect and depends on anyone's taste. Red flags exists and for now, I'm a color-blind. My outlook in life influences the stuffs I read. Even just a little grievance is something I hate and will choose not to bear or endure. But this novel just made me realize again that if I hold on, it will pass eventually. I have read hundreds of danmei novels, lots are on my fave list, but because I would normally not let myself suffer, I will prefer not to add it. After many years of reading, I finally created a NU account. Only this novel stimulated me enough. Or I was just too lazy in the past years as a silent reader. Lmao. My tolerance for angst is low unless it's a crematorium-type. So that's why the first few parts of the story were such a struggle to me because of my personal views. So I'm gonna rate it 4.5 but cl**ked a complete 5 stars as round off. There might be SPOILERS ahead so read at your own discretion. And I wrote this review quickly so the tenses might be inconsistent.

Spoiler

I have read so many novels with MCs having 'dignity' and not holding onto people who trample onto them. But when I was at the middle, I realize that a term called 'unreliable narrator' quite showed when it comes to the MCs relationship with the ML in the early parts. I was also not into the ML because first, I cannot accept how covetous and obsessive the MC is over him. I thought the ML didn't deserve it. Second, it's unrelated but I have read so many danmei, primarily, novels with MCs who later on decisively cut off and stay away from people whether they indirectly or directly cause grievances to them on their own choice and of course, like it that way. Third, I'm probably projecting myself, that if I were the MC, I would not do the same thing. I dislike angst! But that's the point, I'm not him so I'm interested in how things will play out.

I was so disgusted with the situations that occured to him. I lost count at how many times I rolled my eyes at some scenes. It was so unbearable to me who decided to never let anyone trample on me. But again, I held on. I cannot keep calm and want to know how the MC will survive everything. And of course, thanks self for doing it because the next parts are sweet that I thought all the pain and suffering he went through are negligible. I won't blabber more as to not spoil the reading experience. All I can remember is I cried so much just a few moments/hours ago when I was reading it through the end. I think that the fact that ML has flaws in terms of his actions in the later parts made the novel quite realistic.

Also, I have read enough face-slapping from other novels that I actually didn't thought of finding it in this novel. All I wish is that the MC and ML to be free from their shadows and live forever in peace and happiness.

This novel is a gem!

MC is not OP at all, he is impulsive and academically s*upid, but he is pure and innocent. whereas ML is a calm and smart person, but actually he always thinks a lot and has a dark desire for MC.

there are some antagonists here who actually have a reason they are evil, it's MC's stepmother, I actually feel sorry for her and her child... even though MC's stepmother is always bad to MC, it's because she also suffers. there are real antagonists, they are the ones... more>> who make MC suffer, the people I hate the most are MC's biological mother and ML's best friend! they don't take revenge from MC directly, but their life is bad, just a little bit!

The dynamics of MC and ML are quite close, they really need each other. they separated in high school for 7 years, it was the most tragic in MC's life. then, after 7 years, ML returned directly to MC, but MC did not immediately accept their relationship again (that's because MC gave ML time to think whether he was sure he wanted to stay with MC) and MC actually already accepted ML in his heart. <<less

my heart hurts for the MC. The translation is great but it's not being updated now. Maybe it's because I'm just at starting point (from the other reviews it seems so) but I don't like the ML for now. He's a bit too cold blooded (or is it kudere?) for my taste. Still, looking forward to the rest

It is one of those novels which will stay with you. It is one of my most memorable reads and in fact was immediately followed by reading another novel by this author (that is how much I liked it).

[MC is Fu Jia and ML is Li Qu'an.]

It's an angsty novel with a unique tone. The author definitely has an interesting writing style. The story is full of these heart-clenching bittersweet moments. It's a story about love and hope tied together with a thread of melancholy. Trust me like I said... more>> above, you won't forget this novel which I think is the strongest sign of a good novel.

Their initial relationship begins with... a cold unattainable person and a stubborn child chasing after the moon. But when the moon looks back and shines on you. The moon that was in fact, waiting for you to catch up.

Lu Qi'an is a sweetheart and an interesting boy. Cool headed elegant but at the end of the day still a child but everything he does and willing to do for Fu Jia will fill your heart to the brim. Their love story has so many moments etched in mind even though I read a lot and I am writing this review several months after I finished reading.

"This was the reality he had to face——even his dreams were stolen from Lin Fengxun."

They are each other's salvation. One might be in the light and the other might be in shadows but both are drowning covered in darkness. The unconditional love these two have for each other. Fu Jia's love is vast and deep. It feels like it is worth every sacrifice. You know as the reader you almost feel grateful and thankful for the way Lu Qi'an loves Fu Jia. You thank the gods that after everything he is been through at least he gets to have just this one thing. The only thing he wants the most.

The psychological scars these two carry from their parents. They worry that they might become monsters just like them. Oh the dog blood. It will stab you. My heart will never stop being bitter and pained by remembering that

Spoiler

Fu Jia didn't get to complete school. He worked so hard and was so excited. He had only just started walking in the light before he was pushed back into the deepest hell.

[collapse]

Their reunion. I screamed. Just casual but so cool! However, I think mentioned in other reviews, I agree that the ending feels a little rushed (my only criticism too I suppose but it's not too bad plus the author has an extra which will just casually stab you when you least expect it).

Give it a read, one thing is for sure that regardless of whether you like it or not, the novel will definitely make you feel a multitude of emotions. <<less

The translator's summary said it had some dog blood... it's not some, one suffers... a lot but MC is just as relatable as it can be. He's life is full of darkness with just one apparent source of light but when that's taken away, he still proves to be resilient and have a very strong survival instinct. Both MC and ML had no one to model their behaviour after and seem to do a lot of things wrong. And manage to come together even because of that. ML seems to... more>> come out as heartless but there wasn't any person around him to show him how to be otherwise. There might be many things to criticise but not having enough character depth is not one of them. It's well written despite which way opinions go. For me that makes it a good read. <<less
