Trash of the Count’s Family

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

I really like the novel and I just started reading the manwha version and I been reading this almost a year now since my inconsistence ass can't stand to read a long novel but this novel is so good that's why I'm pushing my self to read it.

Amazing novel tbh!

I've been reading it for quite a long period of time and honestly? I love it🫡

Pacing at the beginning of the novel is a little bit slow, but after reaching around the early 200's of V1, everything only gets better from there. The relationships between characters are so heartwarming and Cale's self destructive character traits make me wanna bash my head in!😊

Anyhow, highly recommend this if you like calculative MC's, great antagonists, and silly little scenes between the cast😋

The negative aspects mentioned in the few stars reviews do exist.

MC knows what'll happen, so every time he goes somewhere new we, the readers, are being told what is supposed to happen here. And the plot will go "wrong" since the MC's actions change the story he knows. That's what I like. I like seeing him think "I don't want troubles to come my way, I'll be still" then watching troubles get in his way and how is is "forced" to act. Because no matter what he said (don't want... more>> to be noticed, wish for a peaceful life) this MC doesn't let the people around get injured. He doesn't realize how nice he is and always justify himself ("Ok, I may be acting now, but it's for xx reason, it's advantageous on the long run"). Watching him like this is fun for me, but that won't necessary be the case for everyone else.
And I really like the dragon. Anyway, reviews are quite subjective to begin with.

10/22/19 Edit: I've been reading this novel daily for a whole year now, and the story went above and beyond my expectations. The authors is a god at foreshadowing future events with details you don't notice. We went from a nice show of a MC who knows the future and tours the world, getting powerful all in order to be a slacker, to an epic tale including all the powerful leaders and foes of a world with a rich past and lore. But all things Cale does is for the sake of his slacker life!
The story is very self-centered on him, yet the side characters get to have their own personality and development. You cannot not ending up loving them.

09/04/21 Edit: So, I'm still reading this novel, as soon as a chapter is out I jump on it. I failed to stock-pill every time I attempted to. It's difficult for a long running series to keep being interesting. They tend to get repetitive. Here, the author (may they be blessed) has taken this story to a higher lever by perfectly merging all the usual loose ends together. In the comments, someone once said the author was shooting at us using a "Chekhov's sniper gun" from like 100+ chapters ago. Each new story arc unfold naturally, delivering the epic tale of the most busy slacker in the entire world. I won't say more, I'd be happy if more people come to like this series, just be prepared for a long ride, because in the 700th chapter, the author announced that in less than a year, we'll reach the end of PART ONE. *Sigh* and here I thought Cale would finally concretize his dream... <<less

In my opinion the novel has a big issue with "show, don't tell" aspect. The MC tends to spoil everything in one go, and the novel tends to put in too little effort on developing the story and characters properly, making it feel too fast. Too little content is placed in to make it feel more like a slow burn, as the author skips around with describing certain scenes. It really makes you not care about the side characters.

  • Spoiler

The chef that's actually a torturer seemed interesting at the start, but it feels like the author didn't put in enough development for me to become invested in him. Same with those cat children, interesting premise, but it fails to keep me hooked because the author didn't seem to intend to develop them very much.

When I first read the title and synopsis of the novel I thought it was going to be one of those read when there is nothing else to read kind of novels. When I read a little further and saw his self-described lazy and "only wanted to live peacefully" attitude I thought I'm going to hate this. However, I felt myself getting drawn in more and more. Granted there's only 25 chapters so far but the story telling in my opinion is pretty well done so far. Jass's review has... more>> a fair point when it says that some of the side characters aren't really fleshed out yet. The author seems to forget some of them in favor of introducing new side characters every once in a while, but for the most part each of the characters plays some kind of role and I believe that some of these forgotten characters will have much bigger roles later on. I really enjoy the MC. At first I thought I would hate his lazy attitude, but the author does a good job of progressing the story and adds a fair bit of conflict and intrigue. The MC has an attitude of avoiding trouble and not really trying to get strong. Even though he strives for a peaceful life and he himself is pretty weak, he will inevitably end up becoming strong based off of the characters around him as time goes on. He doesn't want to be a hero in fact he does everything in his power to not be the hero, but still finds himself in exciting situations. Instead of brute forcing like many other novels, he embraces his limitations and plans certain things accordingly and thoroughly. His being reincarnated has almost no influence on the story so far. There is no implementing future technology or government reforms, it's literally just there to set up the fact that he has read the story that he was reincarnated into. Background wise there really isn't any. We get told of some places, but the locations haven't been flushed out by the author yet. Likewise the different species inhabiting the world and the overall countries and demographics really haven't been explained. In many of these novels the author spends time setting up the different gods or kingdoms, etc. But there isn't much if any of that yet. The translation quality is superb. While reading, I couldn't find any mistakes and there are no clunky phrasings or anything else like that added. I look forward to future chapters and have really enjoyed the ones released so far. Thanks miraclerifle for translating another quality story.

UPDATE: Ch. 193

Still loving the story. Many of the issues that I had like the side characters and world are being addressed. They are a lot more fleshed out as expected after almost 200 chapters. I find the story still enjoyable. One thing is that the MC turns out to be pretty powerful. He still is super lazy and mostly plans and relies on his subordinates so it's not just a one shot enemy situation. The situations are still very interesting and the translation is still one of the best. <<less

I'm addicted. I can't stop reading this novel. And I MUST explain why YOU should read it or at least GIVE IT A TRY.

I'll repeat the words of fellows who like this novel like me have said about it many times, over and over: TCF is really well-planned and well-thought novel. The "negative points" you find in the comments and reviews are mostly personal tastes, and that's why I'm writing this review for those who are hesitant to read TCF, be it your first novel or not. In fact, it would be for the best if you read this novel before reading the reviews, 'cuz if you give up on it before even trying to read at least ~100 chapters, you may be losing a incredible jewel of art.

So, there... more>> are mainly five things you should be wary about (specially if you are the impatient type of reader) :

  1. There is no romantic development
  2. The plot is slow paced in a sense you keep on your toes to discover what is it the MC or the enemy is plotting
  3. The fights are not so well described (I mean, there is no explosive, breathtaking power ups or endless battles) so you'll have to rely on your creativity to capture some scenes as epic as possible
  4. The MC isn't a reliable narrator about his own motivations
  5. Some phrases may come as repetitive along the story ("the children averagint X years old" becomes a joke for itself after 200 chapters)
BUT those four things that some would consider as "errors" or "points the author should have done better" can be easily ignored if you know about the main qualities of TCF:

  1. The family and friendship building are beyond satisfying: the characters have their unique personalities, their relationship progress is heart warming to watch, and their interactions do not come as superficial or awkward... it just feels so natural!
  2. Tension building. Hangcliffs. The author NAILS at it. Every little action, every little movement, as boring as you may think, as useless you may consider, is made to give you serious GOOSEBUMPS at the end. Be it a mindblowing revelation about the enemy or the protagonist schemes, or be it a plot twist that expands the world without disposing the original informations about it, it's a EXTREMALY pleasant reward after all the patience you spent on reading those details.
  3. "The fight scenes are lacking": those who have read "Sole Leveling" or another well written (mainly) fight novels may think TCF is a piece of sh*t, but don't be fooled. As I said before, the lack of "epicness" is balanced by the author's recipe: tension building>> plot reveal, PLUS the POLITICS involved in it are the main dish. In short, the author focus on the purpose of the battle, not the battle itself.
  4. If you know anime troupes, you may think Cale Henituse is a tsundere, kind of cool, yet regular type of character HOWEVER it's actually not that simple to define this man. He is the representation of human contradiction. He is lazy, but hard-working. He is blunt and rude, but gentle and warm. He is physically feeble, but emotionally strong. He is smart when dealing with business, scams and people in general, but s*upid about his own reasons to act on something. He is not God. He is not good. He is not bad. You will have to come to your own conclusions about him through the other characters opinions, his own actions, his reasoning and his past. It's up to you to decide what is real and what is not about him. And that's what make him incredibly likable.
  5. I dunno if this is a korean language barrier thing, or something asian language have in general, or something novels consider as necessary or passable, but you will find repetitive phrases along the story. Personally, I think it's a way to fuel the comedy in this novel (which is another reason that I highly recommend read TCF), but it can be easily ignored or fast read. IF you are a sensitive literary person, if you never have read novels and only classical or decently written books, you may find it a bit hard to read. But that's why it's a novel, not a common book. Believe me, there are worse things than a repetitive phrase amidst the reading in this world of novels.
EXTRA: THE PLOT IS CONSISTENT. THE CHARACTERS ARE CONSISTENT. THE UNIVERSE IS CONSISTENTLY EXPANDING. THE KIDS ARE CUTE.

Now it's up to you. Will you join our faction? <<less

This novel is a hidden gem!

Everything from character development to the execution of the plot flowed flawlessly. With the addition of a hint of underlying humor and sarcasm, this novel is beautifully written.

Character:

The MC, as suggested by the title, is a Korean who transmigrated into the body of a tr*sh noble in a novel he was reading. The goal of the MC is to live a peaceful life as a wealthy hermit and avoid all conflicts. But in order to do that, he needs to avoid the hero of the... more>> novel, who had beaten up the tr*sh in the original storyline, and find ways to protect himself. The MC is a very rational individual who values his life above all else, so he ends up looking for ancient powers to protect himself with as well as earning money, because money is the only reliable thing in the world. Along the way, the MC picks up the hero, who is another transmigrated Korean, and ends up raising the hero to be a pretty upright gentleman. The MC also helps the hero gather his strong sidekicks ahead of time in the hopes the hero would leave the MC alone, but of course, the hero starts to get attached to the MC (the hero is like those full of justice type of characters and feel the need to help the weak) as the MC ends up saving people and animals left and right. Even though the MC comes off as an aloof individual, he is more of a softie as he time and again display his caring side. The MC is not op, but his companions are very op, like the hero, black dragon, beast people, etc. Despite the fact that the MC is the weakest within his group of companions, the interactions between the MC and supporting characters are very amusing and heartwarming.

Plot:

The storyline is fairly cliché with the MC's tr*shy personality turning into a cunning character as he grows stronger. From saving the kingdom from terrorist attacks to helping the beast tribe, the MC is embroiled into an epic conspiracy that he slowly unravels. Despite the fact that this is your typical "the unsung hero's adventure" type of plot with the MC pulling the strings from behind the scenes most of the time, there is no romance or harem! I repeat, there is NO romance or harem! It is so difficult to find a good transmigration story without romance or harem in it, so I am very satisfied with the development of this story so far.

Overall:

This is a great novel that completely stole my attention away. I finished all chapters within a single day because I was that addicted to it! I am eagerly waiting for new chapters to come out, so it goes without saying that I highly recommend this novel! <<less

tr*sh is my replacement for Death Flag. And unlike Kazuki/Harold, our tr*shy young Master Cale actually makes use of the people around him instead of being a stubborn moron who insists on walking alone. To others, Cale is a helpless weakling that needs their help when in truth he’s a manipulative simpleton.
Spoiler

I mean, his obsession with gathering Ancient Power to protect himself actually has him interact with key people from the Plot. He treats powerful people well because he doesn’t want them to have a reason to hold a grudge against him. He doesn’t avoid confrontation and begrudgingly devises plans to derail the villains simply because he doesn’t want to be responsible for the lives of the innocent.

[collapse]
He’s such a failure on his role as tr*sh, I can’t help but laugh at him. What a tsundere. This cowardly trouble magnet can't do lowkey and that's what makes the series so funny.
Spoiler

I bet he'll encounter those crazy mermaids and the Whale Tribe on his "sightseeing trip" after the events in the capital.

I can see why this novel is ranked No1. I can understand the criticism it gets. But I really really enjoyed reading this novel. There's something really charming about it.

It's not a perfect novel, at some points it has plot holes but the author put a lot of work into creating a world and characters. For me it was a smooth read. I'm really glad this is not a harem novel. The relationship between all the characters and the care they have for each other is really charming.

tr*sh of counts family is kinda representing how are the downfall of most korean novels in NU.

It has amazing start, pretty good premise, n interesting MC. But slowly, the lack of main plot development, the repetitive plot progression, the lackness of challenge/tension, and the shallowness of supporting characters traits, tookover and ruining the novels.

tr*sh of counts family, The Novels extra, EER, Tutorial is too hard, LMS, n so many awesome korean novels suffer and ruined in later chapters because of those aspects. I am kinda sad because I actually really... more>> love all those novels before their downfall. <<less

Goddamn, finally a super awesome novel who diesndo have HAREM in it!! And actually focuses on building loyalty through friendships.

It feels like I just came out from s kindergarden event and came across a refreshing, calm and mature breeze. That's how this novel makes me think after reading so many similar genres.

The plot is absolutely thrilling with no loopholes so far, everything naturally connects and the charatcha growth of each and every person are logical and mature. It feels great to finally be able to read a piece of Art... more>> that is intelligent and doesn't just follow the popular demand.

I do hope that it will continue like this and not turn into some shabby harem with everyone at the Beck and call of the oh-supreme-one.

I actually not only FERVENTLY WISH for it to NEVER have harem, but I also think that it should continue without any romance as well.

It's really a very refreshing and exciting read!

PLEASE AUTHOR, DONT BREAK MY HEART AND ADD HAREM <<less

Definitely over rated. The story itself is boring, every problem is easily solved by one deus ex machina or a convenient super rare item that is specialized specifically for the problem hes eventually going to encounter. The author gave the main character a op deus ex machina dragon servant which trivializes every conflict he ever enters. The main character's personality has the potential to be interesting if developed, but instead the author chooses to fill the novel with worshiping the MC. The supporting cast is boring and lifeless, I see no potential anywhere for interesting developments.

The plot so far is boring and predictable as the author reuses the same storyline over and over. The MC gets some treasure, then a problem happens that requires this treasure, then he gets worshiped by every character in sight until the next treasure appears. Repeat about 5 times then that explains the plot of chapter 1-100

2/5 stars

Of the first few chapters, the prologue probably was the best. What waits afterwards: redundant or very awkward dialogue, unnecessary repetition, badly placed descriptions, et cetera. This author lacks some basic writing skills. A big black mark against the novel.

The first little bit of story didn't impress me, but it wasn't bad. The protagonist knows where the overpowered character will appear, and provides for him in the hope that he'll profit off of it. I liked how the overpowered character was suspicious of him and didn't feel like being indebted.... more>> Imagine: you lie in a remote dark alley, hungry and tired. Suddenly someone approaches you and says he'll feed you and invites you to come with. Reminds me a lot of a white van and delicious candy. It shows some promise in this aspect: the accent does not lie on violence. Something others mentioned already is that in this novel, conflicts are resolved through other means. It's probably the strong point of the novel, but...

Ironically I still have a problem with smaller elements of the story, tying in to the writing skills again. The way the writer writes about the protagonist's actions is awkward. The author can't pull off dialogue all that well. No, it isn't because he just transmigrated. It's specifically the way it's written. Also, this novel frequently infringes on "Show, don't tell" as another reviewer pointed out. Another black mark against the novel.

I really liked the premise, but execution was sorely lacking. I rarely do not give a novel a fair chance, but this one I really couldn't read any more of. Portraying actions adequately and writing dialogue well are necessities for any self-respecting author. Two stars, because it has redeeming aspects. I've read bad translations and repetitive writing, read through real dumpster fires, but I couldn't stomach this. I don't trust the author to design an excellent plot on the long term either: writing a transmigration story well actually isn't easy. <<less

Definitely something you'll want to give a go. The plot is slow to pick up but as you read, the more interesting it becomes. Missing pieces from the puzzle that the author scatters throughout the chapters come together to form a beautiful story filled with beloved characters. When the plot slows down, focus is placed on character interactions and it is what keeps me engaged the most. They are heartwarming and most importantly, genuine. Characters aren't forced together and really do seem like they belong.

Another highlight for me is the... more>> wide grin on my face as I read the schemes and plots of the protagonist, Cale and also when his ultimate goal of being a slacker just gets further and further away from him as he takes on more and more responsibilities.

One thing I noticed about other reviews is the complaint in regards to the lack of romance. I do agree that the relationships developed throughout the course of this novel are purely platonic (though shippers may disagree), but not all novels have to have romance in it to be enjoyable. These platonic relationships are endearing on their own and the novel doesn't even have the romance tag on it so *shrug*

You end up truly caring for these 'great and mighty' characters and fall for their unique charms and personalities. Thus, I highly recommend giving it a go! <<less

Its... okay. Err... how do I explain this? After a while it just gets... boring? Its not like anything is wrong with it, it just feels like things start to drag on longer than necessary. The most interesting parts being the ones that involve the 'elemental powers' the MC received/is receiving while everything else just feels kinda dull and makes me wanna skip.

Maybe it needs an actual love interest? Or maybe not making all the emotional parts that don't include the dragon feel so... forced and unnatural?

Idk, I have complicated... more>> feelings about only giving a 3 when I used to enjoy this novel so much. :/ <<less

I'm loving the story so far, but it wasn't until about chapter 15 that I got really into it. I would suggest you stick with it at least that far before deciding to drop it.

The novel is still in the very early stages, so it could go bad, many novel have a good start and later turn to garbage, but I'm optimistic about this one. The novel is very well written and well translated.

The MC is very interesting, very manipulative, but not in an as*hole kind of way. He just... more>> wants to live a comfortable and peaceful life, so he tries to give side characters a helpful push into the glorious path of becoming heroes, while trying to remain unnoticed, but it looks like fate might have other plans for him.

I can't wait to see if the novel lives up to my expectations, I will be back to update this review in the future.

------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: So far this novel is a "feel good read" there arent many enemies for the MC to confront, so far it feel like a story about an MC traveling the world making friends with important or powerful people, collecting them like pokemon. This isn't a bad thing per say, but im hoping that the stakes are raised in the future. It is still relatively early and it feels like something is brewing in the background, but we only get glimpses of it, so I'm still optimistic.

------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT 2: Lost interest. The novel has some cool moments, but the build up to said moments is bland, and the dialogue gets repetitive making it a tedious read. I may come back after more chapters are translated to speed read the boring parts. <<less

I hate this kind of story. MC is a pushover choosing hard way involved in all short of problem he didn't have to despote expecting to lived a peaceful life. I don't know if anyone saying MC character is 3D shit, in my opinion autjor forcing the story goes with all kind of MC's confusing monologue which absolutely contradict everything MC done. Reading the story so far I cant find any uniqueness to either the story or the character presentation. It just reincarnation story where the reincarnated became absolutely flashy... more>> and advantageous.

Honestly I feel it rated at 3 star. But I just rate it 1 because the undeserving high rating. <<less

Wow. This is a novel where the MC is subtle and clever without the author stopping for half a page to explain things. Of course, that means you might miss some clever moments, but I personally prefer this. The author doesn't tell you, he shows you.

Having said that, there's a lot of people claiming the opposite. However, they seem to be missing the point. The story isn't about the hero's original journey, although the MC mentions it a lot. It's about the MCs careful social manipulations.

No obvious spoilers but hints.

I've found my inner sad*st & fell in love with the sheer wholesomeness; for those looking for a regular mind drag to burn time, this is not for you. If you liked Omniscient Reader, this is in your lane. Platonic & as*xual characters make this story so iconic for me. No romance harems. No filler side-stories. You understand these characters & their circumstances. Everything is connected, and the plot gets so well fleshed out. The development is smooth and though there is a lot of comparison... more>> explanations; it all benefits the readers' better understanding behind characters, developments of relationships to character growth, & parallels/ foils between worlds.

For those that complain about MC, he's clearly just not your type, which is valid. I enjoy his unique narration, and our slow realization as readers that we should not trust everything from his perspective, at least when he talks about himself. He starts off as aloof & alike to Classroom of Elites Kyotaka Ayanokoji. But, he's more genuine. Similarly, they appear numb & cold with their high intelligence & seemingly OP abilities. If you don't read between the lines, he easily looks a little cliché. But you slowly realize how well he fits in, how emotional he gets, & how psychology plays a big role in how him & others become codependent.

He's "lazy, " but you realize he's just tired, especially considering his past experiences (trauma). He's lazy in the sense he genuinely wants to stop surviving & working himself to death. He wants to live, actually enjoy life. He wants to enjoy retirement life, and does everything in his power to work towards it, differently yet similar to how he fought for it in his original world. With his strategies & authority, while taking everyone's free will into consideration, he manipulates them to synchronize with his goals because they all trust each other to move towards a future where they share peace together. <<less

I was immediately hooked due to its similarity with The Novel's extra, and I really enjoy this. I find that most of the characters lack certain aspects that would make them memorable, however, there is a solid foundation so that they can develop with the story.

Although at first I was taken aback due to the MC's constant "spoiling" of the story, I soon came to realise that this is no longer the story of the Novel, but of his adventures. So anything the MC may say shouldn't be taken at... more>> face value as within days of his "transmigration" the story of the Novel had already changed drastically.

I really enjoy this premise of someone entering a Novel's world, or Game world and would recomend this to people who enjoy The novel's Extra, The Breakers and also The Rise of the Shield Hero. The editing could use a little work, just simple mistakes like a misplaced letter, however, overall the quality of the translation is amazing compared to some I have read before.

the way that the Stories' characters notice the chamge in the MC is, in my opinion, hilarious, and the fast pace of the Novel leaves me in anticipation of how the story will develop in the near future

English is not my native so keep this in mind.

4 - is max rating for this novel and I can explain you why:

Plot itself is good, characters are good, MC is kinda good. When you read it and you feel like its a really good novel, despite the fact its about another one transmigrator cliche, but you begin enjoy it really well after you survive constant reminders of MC, how he got beaten by another MC in novel, so if you survive 10 or so chapters without rejection then you... more>> will read it till the end... or until you will find out shoking truth:

Spoiler

THERE IS NO ROMANCE IN THIS NOVEL AT ALL. Not like MC has to have romantic relationships, its totally understandable if author doesnt want MC have any girfriend\wife\harem etc. Its okay to be whatewer MC is because author is korean, so I assume MC will be virg*n forever, but the problem with this novel is that nobody in this novel has any romantic relationships at all, even some distant side characters.

When you realize it, you wont find this novel entertaining anymore, like it was when you started to read it. And now you cant unsee my spoiler.

Basically we have here a world, where author did his best, but forgot essential points:

  1. Half of the world problems were because of womens. No offence here ladies, we all love you and thats why sometimes we do some crazy sh*t here and there, because love or lust or libido or whatever there is making our IQ decrease by 30-40% minimum. But exact same thing making our life fun and entertaining, colorful and bright, happy and blissful. None of this represented in this novel, except some funny moments on kindergarten level.
  2. Since god knows when noble families always planned future of their heirs, and marriages were MAJOR instrument in their disposal. Here we have MC, who by 18 doesnt have any fiancee. Ok he is\was tr*sh, but even so, he is RICH tr*sh, his father could find for him someone even for political marriage etc. I just cant belive it imo.
  3. OK, I accept the fact that mc`s father is richest man in the world and he doesnt want more money or power, and our MC is korean, so s*x and this there overall wasnt in his vocabulary from the start. But where gone all those poor nobles with their daugters, golddiggers, nobody wants to have silly rich young lord who seems to easy to manipulate? nodody wants to "upgrade" their status and become a noble? Nobody comes to our MC with that intentions. how "lucky" he is.
  4. MC have curious little dragon, who looks after our MC 24\7 for about 1, 5 year and there wasnt even one funny moment when Raon could see MC polishing his spear. Probably because our MC has monk class or because he is korean.
  5. Imagine a world without internet, where tiny gossips always transforming into huge news that all folk discussing. Secret lovers, shameful brothel stories and so on doesnt exist in this novel. So nobles are pure AF and the dont even talk about any dirty gossip so far. Yep, another one unbelievable fact here. Author is either child himself or this novel dedicated for audience between 6-12 y.o.
