A hidden gem, beautiful and simple. Well written and a good translation.

If you liked Spice and wolf, you will like Sugar Apple Fairytale too.

Praise the author.

The FMC is bubbly, ambitious, and at times she makes the atmosphere bitter-sweet and melancholic. All characters are interesting. I'm itching to read all 17 volumes to the extent of considering whether I should jump in and begin learning Japanese. I am sorry for being selfish, however, with little time in my life I sincerely hope for any translator (s) to pick Sugar Apple Fairytale again. For now, I'll look at the covers of each volume book and drool.

Since this was dropped I decided to only read the 2 fully translated novels.

And I feel like that was a valid choice. Sure I'd love more of this series, but each novel has a satisfying ending. They feel complete.

I would probably feel really unsatisfied having to stop after the first chapter of volume 3. So I'm not going to. Hopefully someone will continue translating the rest of this series in the future, and I can read the rest then.

It's a great story imo. Maybe a bit too calm for some... more>> people? There's not that much drama and misunderstandings. And what I remember got resolved quickly. It's a slow romance, in fact, by the end of novel 2 they're still not properly dating. But I don't mind that, they still have cute moments. There's more to the story than their romance. And I can picture them becoming closer as time goes on. But again, I stopped after novel 2.

These novels also take place over a fairly short period of time so... I think they travelled a few days during the first volume, definitely less than 2 weeks iirc. Then between 1 and 2 there was a two month timeskip. And volume 2 didn't take place over a long time either. So them not going from newly purchased s*ave and master to soulmates isn't exactly a bad thing in my opinion. <<less

Being a female, only one word exists for this series...... SQUEEE!

An awesome read, which will have one re-reading it over and over again. It simply describes the trials and problems of an adolescent craftswoman roaming the Kingdom. The first two published novels were said to be somewhat standalone, with the story really moving onward from volume 3 (or so the translators say). There are even hints of a grand adventure to be played soon (Read: HINTS. I have no idea how, or even if, it actually happens) (Note: For... more>> raws you can go to IcarusBride scans. Warning: Spoilers on the SAFT page, just below the raw novel links).

Be it adventure, character growth, a budding romance or actual meaningful dialog [Read = Banter], these novels have it all. Along with a slight smidgen of action and seriousness :D.

Hope you guys enjoy! <<less

Translation was smooth, making it an ease to read. The novel itself is fantastic, a bit of intrigue, romance and a great background. If only I could read the rest now....

People may be interested to know that this series (light novels and manga) have been picked up by Yen press.

This series is way darker than you might think at first glance, given that there's some sleight of hand in the main focus being on the 'good' to the point of idiocy shoujo heroine and the very predictable romance, but this is an exceedingly dark world where fairies are ens*aved by means of permanent mutilation and torture.

It's so accepted that even the heroine resorts to s*avery when it's necessary to meet... more>> her goals, although with apologies and a promise of later freedom, and in the first 2 volumes we don't meet a single human who won't allow s*avery under any circumstances. Even an ally of the heroine thinks nothing of threatening a fairy they know and recognize as free with torture and death to control them in a 'for their own good' kind of way and is surprised when called out on it by the victim, since it's nothing the heroine hasn't done--which is true.

The political world is every bit as vile, with entire noble families being executed down to the last infant, others being virtually imprisoned for being inconvenient without committing crimes.

Honestly, the center focus on the lighter aspects while the evil ones are treated as background or plot mechanics annoyed me until I thought about why the author might be doing that--what it says about the world that this level of darkness is treated as ban*l inconvenience or just how life is, even by people who are presented as being fundamentally decent.

What I want to know now is whether over the course of the 20 volumes of the series this changes and some kind of revolution occurs, or if it's all just a romance backdrop designed to cause relationship problems. I suspect that the author is using this as a vehicle to talk about far more than romance, because you don't write a world this fundamentally unfair in every way, in every chapter, by accident. Gonna need to run into a vocally anti-s*avery/anti-monarchy faction within not too many volumes, though. <<less

It is such a shame this was dropped.

I usually write lengthy reviews because I try to make my criticisms as detailed and well-supported as possible, but.

I love this series so much? I mean, if I really, really tried, I could find flaws, no doubt. And yet I don't want to?

... more>> It's just somehow so very pleasant to read, and the translating was done so well. The formatting, phrasing, etc was great.

Again, it's a shame it was dropped. Especially when there was so much left to read! The manga spin-off only covers the first volume, too.

I sincerely hope someone picks this project up. <<less

This is a really sweet series with minimal character depth. The plot developments were predictable to the point of being extremely obvious. It's nice to read for a volume, but I'll be stopping here. There is nothing new or surprising in the first volume, and the comedy is weak. The ending wasn't completely satisfying either. It is cute, but that's all it has going for it.

Spoiler

MC, aren't you at least going to get your mother's carriage and all of your clothing and belongings back?

This is by far one of my favorite light novels and I'd be more than happy to buy it if it ever got licensed but alas chances are pretty much nonexistent. I can only wish and hope for someone to pick it up because this is truly a lovely story I'd love to get the chance to finish till the end!

If anyone is interested, please pick this up it's really worth it!
