The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door. The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor.

At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. “Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽”

One of the better novels out there, written in a really interesting way. It's hard to predict what happens unlike like in most novels and the main character is rather likable. The world and "lore" is also well fleshed out. It's an wonderful horror literature piece!

A very good novel has some scary moments, most of the situations he goes through are foreshadowed very subtly and you most likely won't notice it. Has become a bit repetitive at around chapter 900, though I just read its because china no likey actual horror stuff without explaining it. Ill continue reading it on and off but I cant commit to reading the rest of the 200~ chapters left.

I've never been so grateful to be married. I don't think I could possibly have gotten to sleep otherwise after binging this novel into the wee hours of the morning several nights in a row.

This was a scary-ass novel and the best part was how it managed to somehow still be scary-ass even after a good 1000 chapters. I very much like how the MC is a smart and analytical sort of dude, and the novel's been doing a good job spreading his search for his past/parents out over all... more>> the different scenarios.

The worst part is that it's somewhat repetitive, especially the bits between 'scenarios'. There are a lot of side character-development things that I really wanted the MC to focus on between ghost action scenes, and that's all thrown aside for watching various different groups of idiots slap themselves (metaphorically) in the face.

But overall I'd highly recommend if you enjoy dreading going to the bathroom at night. <<less

This is an extremely good novel with a solid 4-4.5 for me. This is primarily a horror novel - when I was reading it, it really sells you on the mystery and horror parts. I distinctly remember two novels keeping me up during the night due to the creepy feelings I would get. One was the first 200 chapters of Lord of the Mysteries, and the other was this novel.

I would highly recommend reading this, as while all parts of the novel are good, the first half of this novel... more>> was definitely extremely stand out in quality and the enjoyment it gave me. The last half, while being slightly less scary (but still very creepy) due to the MC getting more and more powerful, does an extremely good job of filling in holes and explaining everything that happened in this novel in a clear and succinct way.

The ending wraps everything cleanly. There is romance with a single heroine in this novel. I would highly highly recommend this novel. <<less

This is probably the best horror novel yet. I'm a total huge fan of it!!!

How does the author make every chapter SO enjoyable? How? Now, whenever I search for other horror light novels, I'm just disappointed... (please, if you know of one that's like this, holla at me!). I constantly get excited when new chapters are out, and it hurts my soulllll when I read it quickly😭

The settings, the characters (especially the MC and the employees😜) , the story development... too too awesome and unique😭🙌🏾

I recommended this to both my... more>> best friend and bro, and they both love the MC! They are also at the latest chap too👀

I genuinely don't want this novel to end AT ALLLLL!!!

But seriously, I'm not exaggerating in the slightest. PLEASE...I BEGOOOOO... you HAVE to read this! <<less

Some people might say that it looses the charm of horror or not much attention to the staff or he goes out a lot. But like it makes sense??? Ever since that red door first appear y’all know it ain't gonna end with him just cooped up in that horror house. Plus the whole parents is missing thing, is it not obvious that there’s gonna be more than just horror??? Ever since the beginning the staff never really got the attention anyway so I kinda got used to it.

And for f sake if y’all feel pissed that MC did less horror live stream, go find a live stream novel.

[collapse]

The only reason i’m giving it a 4/5 is because of the story pacing, like A LOT HAPPENED IN JUST ONE WEEK. Kinda felt rushed and had no anticipation in that aspect. I agree with the people that said that his ‘normal’ life is boring and that’s why story pacing is important. I wished the author could have written it better.

Anyway, the novel is a good read, the author knows how to write scary missions, some actually gave me the creeps! Give it a read! <<less

I dont why this novel is so underrated (at least in this site). The plot is abaolutely amazing. It creat a sense of mysterious and horror vibe that I have never read before. Since I live in a country that shares a lot of similarities with chinese culture, seeing a bunch of horror folklorea and beliefs make me feel greatly interested.

Many people complain the story being"repetitive" but to me, this is one of the strong points of the novel. If this novel follow the modern storytelling, at some point he... more>> will run into some organizations that know exrsocism, acquires knowledge and power, and then the story will gradually lose its charm as a horror story and become an action novel. When reading the novel, I always felt that MC is in extremtly dangerous situation and if not for his wit and courage (his cute yandere specter of course), he would die long ago. And his lack of interaction with people is also a understandable point. Follow common sense, most people that have the same situation with MC will likely go insane or die. And it is not make sense for him to drag his friends to dangerous situations unless he want them to die. Sometime he only bring like one or two people that have some experience in ghosts and they become useless immediately. Love interest is also questionale since.... yandere.... mu*der, you know what I mean.

Edit: after reading until I read over 900 chaps, a weird feeling appeared in my mind. Chen ge may be the second MC I respect (first is fang yang from reverend insanity). Their presence alone creat a great contrast with the world around them. They are both smart, calm, quickly adapt to diffucult situations and have a firm believe and unbreakable mind. But while fang yang is a darkest abyss, chen ge is a brightest beacon of light. They are like two side of a same coin. <<less

I really, really like the idea behind the story - combining game elements and a haunted house. Unfortunately, the longer the novel goes on, the more the haunted house goes in the background. At first, the MC stayed at the haunted house or promoted it with videos and livestreams, but later on he is only running around doing the ghost stories. The parts where he interacts with normal humans in the park are the most fun, but those get less and less. Also his staff has almost no presence -... more>> the girl that works with him has from chapter one appears like five times in six-hundred chapters without doing anything important. What also bothers me is the pacing of the story. It is way too fast. Everything happens day after day after day, with no time to rest.

I really want to give this a 5* or possibly a 6*, but the longer I read it, the more it bothers me. 4* <<less

It's a great novel with a original concept. But like other novels, this seems to be one of the few that peak towards the middle of the novel, then slowly drops into a repetitive general story element. But the uniqueness of each individual arc definitely makes up for this. It's light-years ahead of the usual cultivation dog cr*p.

One of the stories on this site that is deserving of it's high rating. To me, it's worthy of a 5* rating. But like all other things there's no such thing as perfect.... more>> So here are some of pros and the cons.

Pros:

  1. Great protagonist. Doesn't do anything s*upid that would piss you off while reading which is a huge plus. The protag is intelligent and can realize how to deal with certain situations in the best possible way.
  2. Each of the arcs, up to the point I've read, are extremely unique and vivid. Each mission has a certain beginning, climax, and resolution that are all different from the last.
Cons:

  1. The concept of the story itself, forces it to be a bit repetitive. The protagonist goes on a mission, fights against ghost, and gains more ghost for his haunted house. This pretty much the formula the story follows but each individual mission is as I said before, unique. So the repetitiveness is made up for.
In conclusion, it's definitely worth reading. This isn't something that'll really cause you to be "scared" per see, but it's definitely interesting and unique enough to read. It's one of the few stories that are a must read on this website. <<less

From where should I start, this novel is just awesome!!!! This novel isn't just about horror, it has mystery, suspense, thrilling situations, great world building, vivid side characters, proper direction and a neutral good MC. Best of all are the ghosts and there background stories which are full of cruel reality.

You will find naive ghosts, funny ghosts, serious ghosts, scary ghosts, all type of ghosts with individuality.. Their interaction with MC is remarkable... Horror System is kind of ingenious for a horror novel.

Our MC is neutral good and his parents... more>> disappeared due to some unknown reason leaving behind a House of Horrors and a Black Phone (system) as their legacy...

MC is trying to find his parents while clearing mysteries behind various Haunted places.

This novel is highly recommended!

One of my favorite novel. The MC has all the good things that I like on a MC. And not just that, he wasn't also s*upid and don't have ridiculously large harem, other characters also not necessary female to make the MC be surrounded by "beautiful" characters like in other novels *sigh* thankfully, it was one of the novel good points. The ghost in his possession also have their own charm and personality, not really one dimensional (like Xuyin who didn't even utter other words than "It's painful" but managed... more>> to show his character, oh how I love Xuyin) except of course Zhang ya (and his only one female employee) there's no other char that shows interest in him, and that's also great! That was already rare in my opinion because majority of novels with male protagonist in this age seems like to add harem in their genre like it was a requirement. So in all, I'll recommend this (If you want a novel who don't have harem but it still give you horror and terror satisfaction. And let me give you an advice, for better experience Read this at night~) <<less

Edit : completed! Woohoo, it was such a ride. The ending falls short of my expectations; it wasn't that impactful, feel rushed, and honestly I was hoping for something that feels more conclusive. But with the consistency in quality for 1000+ chapters, I believe I can overlook it!

Horror? More like a psychological thriller. Definitely leans toward the thriller side.

I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of horror-slash-thriller stories. You see, i've never considered myself to be a brave person in this department. This kind of genre usually... more>> gives me a shortness of breath and an unbelievable headache, and I have to take some moments to calm my breathing.

But, I just can't stop scrolling! Yes, this story is just that good. The hide-and-seeks keeps me on my toes, the supernatural elements give me the goosebumps, and the overall mysteries just begging to be uncovered! I can't resist it!

Hope that it'll stay that way <<less

This and Lord of the mysteries are my daily go to in QI.

Though it's categorised as horror, don't worry it's not that unbearably scary. It does has alot of high tension moments but the MC is really likeable and kinda broken in the head that he has ways to diffuse the tension with his quips.. making a lot of funny moments.

If you are worried that it will just be nonstop ghost story, don't worry! The author got you covered. He is really good at pacing the story and alternating the... more>> arcs with other plot. Some arcs has really chilling plot, reminding me of tales we tell to each other at night, whilst others are more like hearsay from the internet. Recent events even becomes action oriented like some kind of hollywood supernatural thriller films.

To even it out with quieter moments, in between of some nightmarish stories, you will get haunted house tycoon building game ish.

There is also a much bigger event happening in the background, promising the reader a thrilling future adventure that helps to separate this from the many goal-less web novel. I just hope they keep that promise!

Also... there is a possibility of him building a horde of yandere harem in the future.. and with a main heroine that gift him REAL soul candy and doll with REAL trapped soul who by the way also preferred him to be dead than alive.. what else do you want from this novel! LMAO <<less

Absolutely amazing! I can't wait to read the next chapter. Waiting is quite torturous, really. Even though the translators have an amazing speed of two chapters per day, it's not enough!

Instead of reading daily, I suggest waiting for a sub-arc to finish and reading it one go. Otherwise, the cliffhangers will get you like they got me.

To be honest I am not fond of horror because I get frightened so easily. The first night that I read this I was so scared that I had troubles sleeping. Well, it was daytime when I read this, daytime to night. I even skip school (whole day) just to read. The story so far is very entertaining.
First, the horror scenarios are very well done and very detailed, the background of each story is exciting and I like that each of the scenarios have particularities that make the story more intriguing.
I also love it when other people go to their haunted house, it's fun to watch them get scared.
I also like how scenarios are interconnected to form a more complex and intriguing panorama that connects with future events.
The story itself is very well written, the combination of... more>> various elements such as comedy, intrigue, scary scenes or simply the management of their own haunted house make up a story that I do not lose with many others.
Anyway, this is my first horror story and I must say that I liked it a lot and I totally recommend it. <<less

I'm not a fan of horror but that's because gore is usually in most horror. This is not one of them.

Most characters are recurrening so it's cool to know that they are in track, and are growing as a character. I like that. They're not throwaway.

Excellent story and excellent horror.

I can only say one thing:

Good kid, do not try to read this after dusk.

Spoiler

So the MC is the owner of the horror house. Maybe bcs he grew up with horror things around him his immunity to ghost is quite high compared to normal people. He even has this strong red female ghost as so-called girlfriend/yandere stalker/admirer and their first date was I abandoned school building.

And for me the spookiest ghost in this story is the one related to mirror ghost and bathroom/toilet. Gosh after I read this I even started this habit to open my curtain all day to let sunlight into my room and my wall mirror. I read somewhere (idk if its hoax or not, but u know.... just in case its true haha) that a mirror can store so much yin energy if its placed in dark area that the sunlight never touched.

The plot is scary and exciting. And im hoping for the improvement of side characters like the ghost team, haunted house employees, and that kid who can see ghost, maybe in the near future. Afterall its only 300+ chapters, too early to judge this book. But overall its a good read~

This was one of first book that I read only during night time and when everything around me was silent except rotation of fan in my room and my breathing and my heart beating. This book was one of those for which I will gladly delete this memory from my brain, consciousness, body to re-read it again and again and again.

Now lets talk about the important points:

1. The gore was handled perfectly, it doesn't felt like a story where parents abandoned there child like in most CN novels (not all)... more>> they definitely had purpose.

2. Now the mystery it was awesome for me where our 'boss' uncovers many vicious crimes hidden, many dark under currents surging in the city.

3. Characters were fleshed out I would give 9. 3/10, each character with their own purpose, flaws in them which make them more realistic.

4. Horror which is the name of the book itself this book is just awesome in this genre. <<less
