I have't finished reading reverend insanity as it hasn't been fully translated, and also because I haven't read more than 700 chapters yet. The reason I began reading this novel was because of the manhua/manga. As many know chinese novels can be quite 'draining' with a nonsensical world and characters, they also are difficult to understand sometimes. That is most likely the reason why this will certainly remain the only author I'll read from. (Because RI was banned he started a new novel, which I'll read as soon as it... more>> gets translated.)

Though I have some experience with chinese novels, through their manhua/manga adaptations there were few who interested me, mostly because overly beautiful women and dumb characters were omni-present in those adaptations. Reverend Insanity is something else entirely. It slowly but steadily introduces us into a world with such characters, but while there are many cliche characters many more are clever, intelligent and scheming.

Thus RI changes into a not-so-typical chinese novel. Having a different outlook and most importantly a very good MC with one goal. Immortality.

Still, it has some problems. As mentioned by many there are characters deeply introduced and shown which appear in many chapters but die soon after. An example:
Spoiler

In book 3 where Fang Yuan goes to the Northern Continent he meets Hei tribe which has many, many mortals some which we get more information about, unnecessary information.

[collapse]
. The unnecessary information which is introduced in many chapters makes this novel longer but it is filler which makes the reading experience worse. Another thing (also mentioned often by reviews) are the gender-bender characters. While on the point I'm reading there only are 2 it is quite strange that those 2 got involved with him. (Not complaining as long as there won't be a 3rd.)

Still there are many more good points to this novel. One which is plot armor. This plot armor has its own path, named luck path. That explanation was a fantastic one and I like that it isn't just 'fate' (even though that is a genuine explanation). Also the MCs cheat while used, only got used

times since the beginning, which I find rather nice as he notices the risk it carries.

Anyway all in all a REALLY nice read, mostly because of the way each book ends. With a BOOM. Or rather a plot twist. While I would really recommend this, if only because of the end each book has. As it is quite long and a chinese novel it is understandable why some would rather stay away.

Edit: I caught up to the 2000 chapters currently translated. I have to say, it hasn't gotten worse, on the contrary, I think the author got better with the years of writing. Still providing us with that nice suprise every so often. Now I think many people misunderstand or just don't know, but this is a chinese novel as I already said chinese novels are 'different' having idioms and story structures which make them confusing. With RI the 'problem' is how detailed everything is. 'Every' gain (not really, but almost) is recorded and every loss as well. The thing is, many things get explained too much and turn out to be unnecessary in the end. Here is a (kind of) big plothole
Spoiler

The MCs Attainment levels. Who has read far enough, knows what I mean. The MC gains these through various means and because of his diverse Attainment levels he also is much stronger than many others. Now the problem. He had Grandmaster and I think also Master Attainment level in blood and refinement path. Fine right? The thing though is, he had them at the point where he regressed. Which means a lot of trouble could have just been avoided, simply because of this Attainment level, after all that Attainment helps a lot with various things. The problem here is, the author only invented this concept in the later parts (not very late, but a couple hundred chapters later) and it was a completely new thing. But this Attainment kind of didn't exist before he invented it. At least the story didn't fully reflect that in the beginning. Just a tiny things, which bothered me.

[collapse]
I also remember disliking the third book because of the secondary characters being more in focus and us seeing the world from their perspective. Lastly I will say, RIs ethical and emotional outlook is an eyeopener for some. Sure it wasn't for me, but the messages 'hidden' within can help. Enough blabbering, IM DONE. (With the review, not the novel.)

And another Edit after finishing all the available content.

Much has been said and this novel is awesome overall. But I will talk about another point which I've mentiond already. Namely filler. Filler episodes especially in Anime show day-to-day life, introduce maybe strange events like for April fools day or a beach episode and they sometimes can be fun. What does this have to do with RI? RI doesn't really have filler.

It does in the form of pov changes to slightly unnecessary characters. But every action is there to further Fang Yuans goals. Every action to cement his foundation, his power or to gain allies or resources. That isn't actually bad and all that. After all Fang Yuan is very goal-focused. But now I realize. His character is kind of shallow. His entire character is literally based on a goal, the goal for immortality.

Even though his past also gets a bit revealed namely with a past life love interest, that is just one tiny detail which isn't all that much. So what I mean is, his character doesn't really get explored. Heck, we don't even entirely know WHY he is so fixated on eternal life. Sure we got a run-down. But not the entire thought process. His character is a bit of a bad point. Additionally this means he doesn't get any character progression. He get's smarter, more competent, more powerful, sure. But his character doesn't seem to have changed much after all these chapters, I didn't actually notice that part until now though, so only a detail, not exactly a mistake, more like a feature.

But lets look at the rest. There is quite a bit of humor in this novel, but there are simply too many characters. So many, that names get easily forgotten, I am guessing especially for those not familiar with chinese novels. That was the case for me at least. There comes to mind one character, around the 1000s chapter. Some future refinement genius who will become incredibly talented, the story gets told from his perspective for a bit, the plot goes on, a big event happens. He is forgotten.

The reason? The novel advances too fast. Yes, a bit incredible for a 2000+ chapter novel to go too fast, but it really does somehow. Not really the plot, but the power gain at least, that genius character was simply overshadowed by the MCs simply ridiculous advance in power.

Further thinking about it, this is a blatant power-fantasy. It is all gain, gain, gain with barely any time spent getting used to those gains, and I don't mean the power itself, I mean the people living in his giant
Spoiler

. Too much time is spent on action and not enough on fully fleshing out the characters. Well not like this review changes anything, still

Gu Zhen Ren is brilliant. The whole last part of the book is a critique of China. No wonder they stoped him from indirectly critisizing the country.

TL;DR - Highly recommended. A breath of fresh air. Outstanding in almost every way.

My specialty is criticizing the novels that others think are great. But I'll be the first to recommend this novel.

First of all, this is not the typical story with typical MC. You know how some cultivation novels have righteous and demonic factions? Well, our MC is a demon king feared even by the demonic path.

He's not evil for the sake of evil. He doesn't have a violent temper. He's not arrogant. He doesn't feel the need to... more>> slap anyone's face. He's motivated purely by his ultimate objective and his every action is for the sake of that goal. He's willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of that goal. The lives of innocents, honor, dignity, emotions, even his own life.

MC's journey is not a linear path to the top. He experiences defeats and loses out in various ways. In fact, if you see things going well for the MC, be prepared for the author to knock him down a bit. This is one aspect that I love about this novel. You gain some, you lose some. It's only natural.

Character building is great. There are lots of memorable characters. While the main supporting characters do get carried over from one story arc to another, their importance and number of appearances don't remain the same, which might upset fans of those characters.

The world building is awesome. Seriously, kudos to the author. Different regions, factions, clans, etc. All beautifully arranged harmoniously with intricate and changing relationships.

The power system is also similarly well done. Jumping levels to fight higher ranked opponents is rare in this novel, unlike in many other novels where it becomes quite common as the story progresses.

A unique and highly developed cultivation system in in place, with little in common with other novels. A definite selling point of this novel.

Someone's power is determined solely by the 'gu' they possess and how they are used, sorta like the spirits in Douluo Dalu (there are no useless spirits/gu, only useless spirit masters/gu masters).

The only thing that bothered me initially was that the main enemy of the MC was waaay too strong, making me wonder how the MC could logically survive. Well, the author doesn't disappoint. I'm willing to say the author takes a negative and turns it into a positive. I won't complain.

This should be enough to convey my feelings about Reverend Insanity. The author actually cares about writing a good story instead of being like those dishonorable folks who only care about word count. <<less

I'll let you guys know, I made my account solely to praise this novel!

A good friend of mine suggested me this, he's read well over hundreds of CN and suggested me to start with this when I was starting to delve into the whole Eastern novels genre. Mind you, I hate him and love him for this reason alone. This novel has raised the bar so damn high that no matter what I try to read after, they pale shallow and bland in its grandeur.

I'll cut down my review to... more>> 3 reasons why this novel is a must pick without spoiling much. 1. The story has almost no cliche tropes. No unnatural elements out of the blue. Everything with time gets explained given if you can sit your ass for MTLs. Some instances where you'd perceive that author has done an ass-pull to push forward plot or when MC might be having "fortuitous encounter", in actuality has a very serious and solid basis for the story later on.

What's also interesting is Human Ancestor Biography texts in between the ongoing story, it's like the Gu World's Bible with an alternate story line about a mythical character called Ren Zu who sets the mantle for generations of Gu Cultivators to come.

2. Cultivation is very unique. It's not your usual pills, treasures and martial arts booklets or AI modifiers. Here we have "Gu" insects which you "painstakingly" cultivate, utilize and refine. I emphasized the word painstakingly because just to have Gu insects doesn't make one all powerful. They need to be organized, fed regularly, needs primeval/immortal essences to work which are difficult to procure and to upgrade their level is another matter all together.

There are 5 continents and 2 heavens in this universe with diverse topography, resources, situations, politics and illustrious characters. The mortal to immortal stages for a human/non-human is divided into 9 ranks. 1-5 being mortals, and 6-9 for immortals, same for Gu insects but after rank 5, an Immortal Gu is only one.

There are many genre of Dao. With expertise and hard work in one's Dao field, one can increase their realm which are further in levels such as Common - Grand Master- Grandmaster - Great Grandmaster and Supreme Grandmaster and Quasi-ranks in between. With this attainment, one can organize Gu into formations, refining, battlefields, space/time setups, elemental powers, ultimate moves and Gu Homes as the pinnacle form. Everything has a cause and effect. Nothing in the novel is without reason. It is heavy but it is worth it.

3. Finally, the main character, Fang Yuan. You can get the gist of it by reading tags about the novel on the side but what he really is, is out of this world, quite literally! He originally was a scholar on Earth but got transmigrated into the Gu World. And later, time travels in the Gu world itself. In his previous life, he was like any other human, trying through times and surviving. He had rifts, emotions, love interest and subordinates. With his ocean of experiences and wisdom from his first life, he was cautious, smart, cunning, and decisive in the another. He's not unnecessarily bloody, cruel or insane but he's apathetic yes. His lofty goal is Eternal Life, for this he couldn't care less about justifiable means but results. Throughout the story he has literally zero character development but that's what sells it. He's unbridled and unfettered and to get what he wants, he will be hard to himself before he is to others. His schemes and plots are just among the various means on his path, if he can get what he wants through sugar talks or business deals, he'll lose all face and concede. There's no bottom line to his principles and no spare space for companionship or relations. He's a true Demon.

Reverend Insanity was one of the first wn I encountered. Needless to say based on my rating, I have, and continue to, enjoy it very much. One of the key reasons I think I enjoyed it so much was the adaptability and resilience of our MC. He understands that even if he gets a heaven defying treasure, if he can't protect it/survive to make use of it, its useless. Driven on his path, he makes use of the circumstances and his memories to succeed. Also, MC won't offend x, y... more>> and z for no reason due to a little disrespect like a fool, but bides his time and plots to hit them with a reverse sweep. The other aspect which manages to keep the story fresh is that the MC is overpowered but also weak. He knows which fights he can pick and which he should rather not. He faces real setbacks and tries to deal with them using the resources at his disposal, sub-optimal as they may be. His "cheat" (past memories) aren't absolute and it takes into account he was just strong in his past life, not unrivaled by a long stretch. You know he will find a way out somehow (hes the MC for gods sake), but this makes it exciting to see how. Many may mention redundant info or characters who became irrelevant quickly, but more often than not throughout my reading I notice seemingly minor characters or changes having significance down the line, which is often an exciting realization to come to.

->To address some of the people mentioning the author trying to "justify" Fang Yuan's actions breaking the flow, I don't really think that is the case. At the beginning of the novel it may be there to a certain extent (really can't remember too many specifics), but in the later parts this isn't present. ->The only thing I can really say I disliked was volume 3 and to an extent volume 4 (mopping up the f*ck ups resulting from 3), although volume 4 ends on an awesome note and its only been uphill from there) <<less

Alot of good reviews already, I'll try making it short

It's obvious it's a f*cking great novel

Plot? Depth? Character? Name it. There's literally nothing missing from this novel (romance maybe lol). The author and the MC sets a goal right at the start of the novel and are gunning for that goal ruthlessly.

This is not your goody goody novel, anyone rating this less than 3 obviously has read too much tr*sh novels whose plot are almost always set every other chapter and completed in 29 chapters.. That sh*t don't fly here,... more>> the world here is cruel and you don't get characters coming out of f*cking nowhere to amuse MC, everyone's got a purpose, scheme or plot. The depth is simply amazing.. No one's sitting down to hand sh*t to you, the MC after reincarnation sets into the world perfectly.

Are there negatives? Yes but the positives outweighs it so much that it's that good.

The novel has a direction set right from the get go. Long term short term plans.

Honestly the quality here is top notch.. Might be the best Chinese novel I've read. Meticulous, detailed and deep. If you have short attention span just read something else. <<less

This is one of the Xuanhuan novels I'm really into.

The MC is a transmigrating 500-year-old man (or so) who goes back in time with the usage of Gu. Gu are basically pokemon which are cultivated with a multitude of items and are strategically used to best your opponents or make life easier. The MC was never a genius, but having his knowledge, memories, and wisdom from previous experiences, he flows through his younger years once more with a cold and calculating personality.

Now, while the reincarnation theme and op MC might... more>> seem cliche, the events joined in with thrilling twists and turns along with the fantabulous execution of its storyline make Reverend Insanity a definite must-read. Additionally, the occurrences don't always go the way the MC plans, even if he has insight from his previous life or amazing predictive abilities.

While Reverend Insanity lacks romance and comedy, it fills it in with somewhat realistic behaviors of others and their psychology, expressive descriptions, and comprehensive interpretations of situations; such aspects are much more fitting for this type of story.

I've enjoyed the ride so far, I'm hoping I'll be even more impressed by later chapters. <<less

One of the best MC there is.

It is hard to find truly evil protagonists like the one here.

Even if you find one the story might not be as good.

... more>> I have read WMW and honestly I find Reverend Insanity better because everything in it keeps you interested.

Especially the plannings, schemes and politics.

While WMW is a good novel

some parts of WMW are really boring and is chore to read.

It is mostly because the MC of WMW has to do many researches and truthfully his schemes are not that interesting compared to Reverend Insanity.

I'm not a critique so I don't really know how to evaluate a novel but it doesn't really matter if the story has depth or deep meaning or character development to me as long as a novel manages to keep me interested and I enjoy reading it that is enough.

I'll leave the evaluations to experts and I'll just say that I enjoy reading this novel very much. <<less

Hm. People dislike the protagonist or dont agree with his actions, ending up doing bad reviews. Yes, he kills Innocent people; and do a lot worse than this actually. Yeap, you dont need to agree with him nor do the same thing!

Its a really good story with increbly Twists. You must pay attention so you can have better surprises. The author loves to leave the better for the end. :)

If you dont like evil protagonist; betrayal; mu*deres; matipulation; etc... Just dont read It?

Well, the story seems good and the characters seem flashed out. The problem is that none of it is interesting. The author takes too much time to explain unnecessary stuff over and over again, he tells boring folklore stories about made up Gu thingies for half a chapter, and nothing barely happens! It is a chore to read through and even skimming over the paragraphs and reading only the conversations doesn't help. Even the character interactions are boring. I pity the translators who have to translate paragraphs upon paragraphs of... more>> pointless exposition.

TLDR:

Could have been a nice novel if the author could concentrate on the story and not on useless exposition that feel like fillers. <<less

To me the strongest part of this story is the characters, especially the MC.

Most authors directly write "the main character is incredible clever and older then time and wise reincarnated" then he spends 2000pages proving himself a liar every single page since the MC ACTS like a 3 year old moron with plot armor that can stand a nuclear hit.

This story the author doesnt need to write "the main character is incredible clever and older then time and wise reincarnated".

Even the rest of the character does not feel like comic... more>> 2dimensional "old wise teacher" "evil step parents" "evil twin brother", they all feel real and lifelike and ud actually care even if the "baddies" would get killed.

I keep going on and on only about the character and the reason for this is that to me its the hardest part about finding these type of stories were I can even stand the characters. The rest of the story what there is of it is bit early to tell but the world building seems fine so far after 50 chapters. <<less

First off!

Feel free to ignore these 'insightful gurus' who read like 200 chapters and judge an entire novel without ever really getting into it. Especially these copy-pasting noobs saying "edge lord teenager readers" etc. Lol, when they probably couldn't even write a decent 200-word paragraph without ashaming themselves. No matter any novel, just straight-up disregard these types of early reviews in a bin and don't let them make decisions for YOU.

Personally, I read this novel all the way through and found it to be a great read overall. Of course,... more>> there were some parts that felt overfilled and incomplete, but keep in mind that the novel was never finished due to its ban. There is a possibility that the author could have tied up loose ends and addressed lingering mysteries if given the chance to continue.

If you're still unsure whether or not to dive into this novel, I recommend checking out the manga (which has up to chapter 96) real quick. If you enjoy it, then give the novel a try continuing the story from around chapter 130 (approximately).

Keep an open mind and enjoy the twists and turns of the story as it unfolds. Some elements may be to your liking, while others may not, but ultimately, it's up to you to decide.

Even if this isn't your preferred genre or style, it's still worth reading and not a waste of time. <<less

A Masterpiece, arguably one of the best Chinese if not the best novel on NU.

This novel doesn't shy away from violence and mature topics. It is very well-written and the world-building is top tier. And let's not forget Fang Yuan. He's one of the if not the best MC I've read till now. He's the strongest point of this novel.

So our MC can travel back in time using a gimmick that is somewhat in line with the worlds power system. It's an interesting prospect but then, MC almost never uses it - because it would be too cheap a plot device? Come on! As a result, the time travel gimmick rarely matters.

So what is left? An "evil" MC. Which is limited to letting people die, and sometimes feeding innocent girls to bears, which is described in gruesome detail. But even that is a rare occurence in this novel. Most... more>> of the time, our MC is micro-managing his cultivation resources, which is reiterated ad infinitum, so most of the novel is essentially just filler.

Key plot points that seemingly make it worth to keep reading are just too far apart. <<less

Dropped at 750.

The biggest problem with this novel, is that it's about 80% filler. I just couldn't continue anymore. Half of the novel is about FY buying resources and bargaining and another 30% is about random people nobody cares about have really intense fights against other random people. Also reading an entire chapter about some random GU worm that FY obtained gets pretty old after having read 59 such chapters before & he has like two dozens of them at any given time. Also the writer is is just writing... more>> whatever, making up really arbitrary rules just to discard them a few hundred chapters later. Fang Yuan's cultivation is also increasingly random, with a lot of minor cultivation restarts. Yes it's true that this novel has more depth than the typical cultivation novel, however there are just so way too many inconsistencies. This is absolute tr*sh compared to let's say Lord of the Mysteries.

(I don't mind that FY is evil) <<less

If you don't like this novel, I'm not sure we can be friends.

There's only a couple flaws in my opinion (they only kick in at around ch1100) :

1.) Dialogue with a crap ton of context dumps

2.) Translation with some shitty wording

Ah, and to the person who said this book was sexist, read until chapter 2200, the most OP character in the history of the entire world is female. But to be fair, the OP female characters all make me want to slap them because of how damn annoying they are.

I really really want to like this novel because it's rare to find a good novel with an evil protagonist, but good god I cannot put up with the blatant sexism and lengthy and useless critiques of society that are in this novel. In the first 30 chapters there's a scenario where the author says "women need a family and a lover, but a man doesn't need any of that, he just needs a rival" or something to that effect. What the f*ck dude? Or all of this crap about... more>> women not being able to hurt or kill people because they're women when women have equal opportunity to get Gu and be strong as f*ck. I just can't force myself to put up with it. Also there's the like half a chapter long parts where the protagonist talks about how society is just to cull sheep and crap like that that makes me think the author is just going through an edgy phase.

I really wish I could like this novel and I'm going to force myself to keep reading, please call me out if this stuff gets better later in the novel and I'll change my review. <<less

Good novel with a lot of substance. A cut above the rest of every s*upid Xianxia novel. Worldbuilding, plot, decent introduction of newer levels of power.
