At best, I'd say some parts of this are kind of funny. A modernized world with cultivators out in the open, with products and advertis**ents, like spirit swords made by Nike -- I thought that was a pretty fresh take. But I wasn't able to feel much enthusiasm for "The Daily Life of the Immortal King".

For a comedy series, several chapters seemed more like uninteresting filler, without really landing any good gags. Like the character Lotus Sun giving a school speech. I saw many comments stating that it was very... more>> derivative of the manga "Saiki Kasuo no Ψ Nan", so I went to look that up for myself, and I have to agree. But in comparison, it's far less punchy -- there was never anything that made me seriously crack up in what I read of this webnovel, but in Saiki Kusuo I had a real proper laugh in just the second chapter. The manga of course benefits from being able to do visual gags, but it undeniably comes off better in a direct comparison.

You may not want to read a gag manga though. Personally, I prefer to read something with an ongoing storyline, so I tend to get tired of the disconnected chapters of a gag manga before long. But this webnovel seems even less suited to running storylines. Of course, there are many series these days featuring overpowered characters, and the good ones have all sorts of good ideas to compensate for that lack of narrative tension. I didn't see that here, except for a plot point taken from One-Punch Man. And giving the protagonist the ability to modify people's memories? I don't like it -- it keeps the plot from ever moving away from the status quo. In other words, it keeps the story from getting more interesting.

Wang Ling also just doesn't have much personality. He can be summed up with "everything is troublesome and I just want to stay low-key." This can work for a straight-man to a bunch of crazy supporting characters and wild events, but that lack of enthusiasm otherwise tends to be infectious to the people reading it. It isn't even very consistent -- he puts himself at the center of attention "just to move things along", and, sure, that will move things along -- in the direction that is least aligned with his stated goals in life.

It seems a little inconsistent on some of the finer details of the world, too, though I suspect some of this is on the translator's part. I assume "Star City" and "Songhai City" are the same place, but I have no idea. There were also blank footnotes on foreign-language terms that the translator apparently forgot to go back and fill in. So while it's in readable English, I wouldn't say this one is translated with the diligence I prefer to see. Although in this case, the series probably doesn't deserve much better. <<less

Don't expect an incredible story and plot, the MC is probably (actually not even probably) the strongest in his world, and it's just more of a comedy gag story.

It can be quite interesting since it mixes cultivation and the modern world, and if you like the kind of humor it has it's probably gonna be an interesting and fun read if anything.

But like I said, don't go in expecting the greatest plot/story (since that would probably just dissappoint you).

It is an interesting world, a cultivation world that has gone through similar changes as our society and ended up in a modern world.

However the plot is badly done. The MC has super powers since birth, is probably the strongest person in the world at 10. I don't mind this, however the plot has continuity problems. At the beginning it states one thing, then later on to introduce a new plot element it's revised on the fly.

Spoiler

Example: He draws a rune on himself to hide his power. Later it wasn't himself who did it, it was his cousin who was jealous of his power and wanted to suppress him. Next he suddenly has a power to make people forget everything about him that they learned before meeting him. However it has affected none of the previous people who met him and already knew things about him like his entrance test score.

Well, I did not read the novel yet but I quite like the anime version. I don't understand why people are so angry about this character. Maybe they are just jealous because want ling is the most powerful MC ever, more powerful than the MC we grow up with like Goku or Naruto. I'm bored about other anime' same storyline: The MC is either weak but becomes badass with time, or is average but still becomes badass or is powerful but encounters a more powerful guy/girl. Ps: believe me after... more>> goku, naruto, Natsu and they others I'm so tired. It's refreshing to watch sth where the MC is not struggling to prove himself to people, or pursuing a heroic quest, or trying to save the world, this MC is overpowering, no one can defeat him and I like him the way he is, it's not his fault he has to be quiet and a bit associal to prevent himself for destroying the universe, when people get emotional the do things they regret more often and it's the same with Wang ling. He has to be the he is. People are tired of MC that struggles to get strong, have plenty of friends, who are to joyful it's boring gosh ! The best anyways today have MC that are more quiet like Wang ling, example Kira, Lelouch, Conan etc... We are done with the old type anime MC ! It's nice to have an undefeatable MC, who leaves a peaceful Daily Life, whose day are not spent on training to get more stronger, or to prove he can become more stronger to one bullier character, and more important who is not a pity ful orphan, or whose life will not be disturbed by a silly major threat on planet earth. <<less

nice premise. but the overall is a bit mundane. no motivation and all the interesting plots is left in the "early days when the MC was still below 15 years old and demons were rampant". for someone so "powerful and OP", the MC doesn't show any interest on his own abilities: why not check out mars and see if you can terraform it? oh wait he wants to be low key and all that BS crap he's spouting. if the MC was a reincarnator I CAN UNDERSTAND HIS LAZY MOTIVATION----but... more>> he's not. you have all these awesome powers and not even bothering to experiment its limits? why not try practicing on the moon or outer space or among the asteroid belt?

and seriously, not talking to anyone? how can you live your life? if he used his telepathy then sure I can understand but NO! he didn't use squat, what if he has a question he just thinks of it and the teacher just assumes the questions he is asking by doing a russian roulette?

not to mention the translator is a yakitty yak yak yak a-hole. we get it. we already got a bunch of info dumps during the story---we don't need someone copy pasting from wikipedia as well. I'm only at the 100-ish chapters but I can already give this a flat 3 stars. very good premise... bad delivery of the author. he's pulling shat out of his ass left and right, from ch. 10 onward.

your brain needs to be a coma patient to stomach the BS the author of this novel is shelling out.

seriously. <<less

At first, this novel was exactly what I was hoping for. An over powered guy just trying to mind his own business but somehow still falling into trouble here and there through out his daily life.

However, after about 40 or chapters or so, the novel pretty much has nothing to do about him really. The author doesn't seem to have any plan or story sorted out for the novel. Instead, the chapters become their personal little episodes about random side characters all so the author can put out a joke... more>> or two. I'm all for slice of life novels, but this novel has next to no direction. Jokes including character named after one punch man and the MC from the novel otherworldly evil monarch (which ironically I just finished before starting this) have nothing to do with the novel itself or the overall "story".

Even slice of life novels need to have some direction or story, yet this has nothing. Just nonsensical one shot jokes for each chapter. <<less

I get this is supposed to be light hearted and funny but its just not. I keep reading in hope something small will change and it achieves its potential but it ain't happening.

Imagine OP is a brick wall. This story is the equivalent of watching people running into the brick wall and dying, acting all shocked that the brick wall is so hard and strong. It was entertaining the first two times. Not anymore

Yes it is similar to the Disastrous Life of Saiki! DAMMIT!.... BUT Saiki is an manga/anime and this is a novel. In my personal opinion this book has alot of more humor than Saiki (my opinion). Saiki and Lin both have brothers yes. This book is more of a cultivation and the MC isn't as OP as Saiki plus some characters can even pose a little threat to the MC in this book. Overall I loved the comedy in this book so people dropping this saying its a rip off... more>> of Saiki are missing out a lot. <<less

Wow the number of idiots leaving one star reviews for the most brainless of reasons lol

- the humor:

There are people getting mad and complaining that they don’t find the novel funny. Wow, super odd to be unable to understand the jokes within a Chinese daily life webnovel, isn’t it? It’s almost like an American traveling to a foreign country, and then throwing a tantrum because no one is speaking English and they can’t understand anything.
The humor definitely isn’t anything revolutionary, but it includes a lot of colloquial jokes and... more>> cultural habits. Not to mention, this is a slice of life, as seen in the ‘Daily Life’ title. It has action and fantasy purely because of the setting.

- the premise:

The number of people complaining that it’s a ripoff of Saiki don’t make sense to me. The novels are under the same categories??? Of course they have the same premise?? There are about a million transmigration or rebirth or villainess novels, and no one’s screaming about ripoffs there. It’s almost like genres are meant for sorting together similar novels...

- the romance:

Definitely shit. I hate the lack of personality or development the female lead has. The romance is super contrived and just seems like a forced plot device to keep our MC ‘human’. <<less

OK, at the start I would like to say that I love the story and the idea that the author used. I just love the way that MC is so OP and despite that trying to live normal life. Story progression is little bit slow and it is more of a slice of life in cultivation world that anything else. The main triggers of the story are misunderstandings that are, in my opinion, used to often-but hey, it's just me.

There is a potential for a good romantic subplot but the... more>> romance is as it is tagged - 'slow'. The MC is developing in a steady manner but, again, too slowly. As the story goes on the author develops the MC in character and in usage of strength... The starting premise is that MC is too strong so his powers had to be sealed, but as the story goes, the MC is using more and more of his powers. I hope the whole power/romance is developed in a faster manner.

All in all, if you love the concept of ultimate OP MC struggling to live a normal life, this novel is for you. There is a great potential and I hope the author will polish the story and characters more. <<less

i truly adore this story, totally in my top web novels. It is so humorous. I can’t count the amount of times I've broke down laughing LMAO. The author is good at making both funny & asinine situations, but also serious, sad, worldbuilding moments. I am enthralled by this world and the characters in it.

there are many reviews saying that this story is bad, but they are only on chapter 15 🤷🏾‍♀️ it’s totally not fair to rate a story on how good or bad it is from just a... more>> few chapters.

if you’re a fan of comedies with drama and action, I recommend. I am in love. <<less

It's a satire/meme novel. Thing is, it's been done before, like many have pointed out (ref. 'The Disastrous Life of Saiki K' + sprinkle of 'Noblesse' & 'One Punch Man').

The main cast all act like the ones from said referred anime and it's rather painful to see such a blatant rip-off.
Although it tries to be original by giving it a spin on a modern cultivation world, MC's life and interactions and slice of life bits are all reminiscent of the OG.
Even if the intention wasn't there to rip... more>> it off as Saiki-K is also a satire anime, all satirical characters boil down to the same old stereotypes and it's just mirroring off each other.
The story itself goes on for over 1, 9k chapters which rather is unfitting for satire, telling the same old jokes gets tiring eventually, not to mention for over 1k chapters.
The biggest selling point is still using meme references and sapping on your nostalgia to make it likeable.

Worst part is that the love interest is far more exaggerated than Teruhashi Kokomi, she's the overall trope of a gender bent version of ML stereotype from chinese romance novels,
your over bearing haughty CEO ('s daughter) PLUS the early stage characteristics of the 12-13 yr old Haruno Sakura from Naruto (immense ego, chases after/annoys her love interest like sakura did with sasuke, her head bubble cinemas of rage gives me the sakura - SHANNARO BS-PTSD).
By basing the novel's selling point on nostalgia, I don't think author overlooked the factor that the base mold of their female main character was the most hated fictional character back in the days...
How the MC attracted her and his followers is extremely muddled to the point where I can only use the saying 神不知,鬼不觉. Their thinking is more on an early middle school level but for some reason they're all freshmen high schoolers....
Story drags these clowns through the mud, giving the readers a laugh but suddenly injects chicken soup and feels into them with a flashback sob story to such a sudden degree that it compares to drinking water through the wrong pipe (sudden Jujutsu Kaisen X SAO move).
Spoiler

Turns out MC has become so damn lonely and desperate, he's willing to hang out with these superficial chuunibyou characters. The ending of first arc totally overlaps with Sword Art Online S1, main couple holding hands -oh the edgy overlord chunnibyou finally got a waifu while watching worlds (instead of game world) crumble and repair itself- wrap.

[collapse]

Aaaanyhow, I don't see how someone who watched all before mentioned shows/stories can enjoy this. I can see the attraction of the novel if this concept is fresh to the reader. <<less

I enjoyed the comedy but I'm taking a break now after binge reading this within 3 days. University is starting again.

Appealing characters, villains get a little boring as the speed slows down. Breaking the 4th wall every day is fun, too. Characters don't act too s*upid but aren't genius level. This is a positive feature though because it makes the comedy work.

so guys, all in all the story is kinda funny, just one of the many you can read when you feel like chilling, but I would like to ask about the slow romance tag, since I can't read anything of it in the 250 chapts I've read..

I would really like to ask if someone actually knows when it's start, I do understand it's Slow, but still at least a foreshadow of something I expected. So if anyone can tell me would be cool

I honestly think this book is underappreciated. It has humor and plot and this is one of the only books where the MC actually somewhat can keep his identity a secret although the people around him suspect something's going on.
