In order to survive in troubled times; in order to get revenge for loved ones; in order to claim justice for all 118 people who died undeservedly in the village. Lin WanYue took the residence registration of her younger brother Lin FeiXing to join the army, and was determined to kill the Huns all over the world.

The empress died at court, leaving the 16 year-old princess and the 8-year-old crown prince to rely upon each other for their lives. Several princes older than the crown prince were greedy for the throne, and the two were in a precarious position.

To be honest the FL didnt deserve the MC at all. She suffered a lot because of her but I kinda like how the princess always know whats happening on MC via reports. I came for the fluff not in angst/sad story.

Hello, hello, so from the beginning, I enjoyed this novel very much, it's true some parts were hard to understand or better said, why would the characters do what they do. But after reading it a second time. I understand the ambitiouns and why they chose the way they did things. For me the stories was good and exciting. At the end I did cry and can only recommend this story.

A solid romance story with good court intrigue and enjoyable battles. The author does a freat job with the main character, making you feel her joys, pain, and sorrows. The side characters are also funny and do a great job of supporting the story. My only complaint would be that these side characters can oftentimes fall out of place.

Spoiler

Sanbao, Meng, and Bian. You were the bro squad, and I wish they had some follow up.

[collapse]

The princess herself is conniving and willing to do whatever it takes to see her little brother sit on the thrown. This can turn some people off of her from the romance viewpoint, but she is otherwise a very interesting character otherwise. She rarely says what she is actually thinking which can frustrate the reader as much as the main character. This can be as inoccuous as a small report that a maid had fallen into a well, hinting that this maid was the cause of an information leak that caused a previous issue. It puts up an air of mystery, but it can also make it harder to like the character.

Ending spoiler:
Spoiler

The princess fakes the general's death because she sees her little brother is going to use Wangyue the same way she did, and she doesn't want that. Great moment to show character growth, but it is muddled.

[collapse]

I'm also a little upset because it feels like the big villain got off too easy. He has no redeemable qualities at all, so anything less than a slow, painful death is more than he deserves.

The ending also feels a little lacking. In author comments you see that apparently there were a good number of people who kept complaining to the author that they didn't care about the war or court drama. They just wanted the romance. I think that is why it feels like the ending war and big political situation end up resolved a bit too quickly. It isn't a bad ending mind, just not as good as what came before. <<less

Beautiful, absolutely a fantastic heart breaking masterpiece. The undying love between two women in ancient times is so heartwarming and the author makes it so pure and loving. The plot overall is a bit rushed in my opinion as we could’ve seen a deeper development between the two protagonists and definitely more fleshed out since there were so many connections, foreshadowing, and characters that could’ve used more details. However, since this is the author’s first work we can be rather lenient as the other parts of the novel makes up... more>> for it. The romance between the two protagonists is well thought out and made me cry a few times. Absolutely still a stunning read and a great debut novel that is going on my list of favorite Yuri works.

Sidenote: For those who have read ‘clear and muddy loss of love’ this novel is very similar to it except with more action and less political intrigue. For those who read “My wandering spirit lady” or some of the author’s more lighthearted words like ‘Ugly Hero’ this novel has higher levels of angst but the author still gives a lot of fluff. Plus, more historical vibe and definitely has that added ‘homosexuality is forbidden’ since it is set in a less tolerant age. Still, if you liked the authors’ other works, you’ll definitely love this one. <<less

I loved reading this, mostly the battles. It was very exciting to read about the whole war situation that was going on. It made me root for the MC to complete their revenge so much. Also MC doesn't have the PROTAGONIST'S HALO so there are many sufferings haha~

First of all, did I liked it? And the answer is: of course!! After finishing, I can say for sure I enjoyed the ride.

However, I have to say it was a slooow way to finally win my heart.

The first part of the story is slow paced, for good and for bad. You actually get the whole picture of the characters, the military, and so the worldbuilding does not suffer. However, I think that character relationships actually did suffer. I like my romances slowburn, but this one on the first... more>> part I actually felt that instead of cooking slowly, someone forgot to put the food on the cooker. Thankfuully second part of the story remedied that. And I normally like politics and court drama on my stories, but I have to care a lot for the characters, and at that point, character development has not settled in for me to love the characters.

Speaking of the main pairing and their relationship:

MC:

Spoiler

Lin Wanyue at first is somewhat obsessive on her goals to the point of actually demonising her enemies and looking at her world in a Black and White manner. Of course Li Kingdom = Good, Huns = Bad. And I was afraid that the story will actually support her manicheistic view. Thankfully, her character development actually shatters this notion and makes her learn to compromise.

[collapse]

FL:

Spoiler

Li Xian was difficult to me to care about because she has little empathy for those who are not her brother, including Lin Wanyue in the beggining, and seees innnocent life as disposable. Every person, every single life is just another piece in her chessboard. She is so manipulative even to her most loyal servants that you can sometimes feel your sympathy for her character dropping. Thankfully, again, Character development comes to the rescue.

[collapse]

On their relationship:

Spoiler

This is a Yuri novel, you know from the beggining they end together. However, as I said before, it feels more like their relationship hits a wall and does not develop for several chapters of the story, even when they are married. While there are understandable reasons (Li Xian is a lesbian woman, not a bis*xual woman, thus she cannot fall in love with a man, and I like very much that this aspect of her sexuality is NOT toyed with), it hurts their development.

Thus when they are finally honest with each other, you can enjoy and rejoice in every momemnt

[collapse]

Overall, a good story you should give a try, knowing that it has a very slow development until the second part. <<less

This is great historical drama, it's slow burn romance develop, well written character develop. Author write MC character very well, I also like side character POV, there were lot of emotional drama in both main pairs and side character pairs.

I love how much MC love princess FL, she is devoted and loyal to her. When She die first, She went to the netherworld, she refused to reincarnate because she is waiting for Fl. FL also went to the netherworld 10 years later and also refused to reincarnate because she knows... more>> MC is waiting for her. MC and FL lived through the past 9 lifetimes with each other. They were suffered and punished past 9 lifetimes because of same s*x and their love for each other,
"Those two had struggled for nine cycles, yet they still refused to let go of each other."

As for story plot, it's well written, great read for me. The way both general and princess did realistic, MC whose family killed, she cherish life very much, She wanted protected her soldiers, friend and everyone, While FL who live in harm royal palace, she use everyone and doesn't cherish life, As a princess, she became to cruel, scheming and cold-blooded to protect herself and her brother from harm. She did bad deed to make her brother king as her empress mother wish. I actually crying reading this novel, There were so much emotionally, devoted, unconditional love. FL change herself for MC, she promise to MC that she will never killed any innocent person. This is my favorite novel. Heavy recommend this great GL novel. <<less

Good novel although I didn't like the pairing between the two of them. The princess I'll be totally honest didn't deserve the MC (female general) at all. She gives off the air of a prick pretending to be kind but that's ok because she's doing it for her brother. Personally, I believe the love story between both of them was incredibly forced and more unnatural than not. For about more than half the story the princess doesn't even view MC as a love interest. I'll be giving it 4 stars... more>> just on the basis of a mediocre if poorly developed story but good development of the MC. <<less

Just a tip if you want to change a star rating: scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where the reviews are and it will let you change it there.

This story is painful. It's well written, but I have no interest in political intrigue or fights for the throne which seems like the only thing the FL cares about. I'm surprised there isn't a betrayal tag because I really feel like this FL would betray everyone around her to get what she wants.

Anyway, there are a couple... more>> of reasons I'm dropping, but these are some of the sticking points:

Spoiler
  1. The FL has no remorse or care for anyone that isn't her brother (at this point). She had 20 of MCs fellow soldiers killed in a fake assassination attempt just to further her plot against the other contenders for the throne and MC has no idea that the FL is the reason for her brothers' deaths. I think, if she knew this from the beginning... she would hate the FL. I started being very iffy about the princess right at this moment and never stopped.
  2. FL is set to marry someone else and I don't see that not happening at this point. I don't like it. FL is relatively powerful and she could get out of the marriage if she really wanted, but she gets what she does want by marrying the guy, so she won't. The guy she's marrying is also repeatedly shown to have feelings for her.
  3. There was also a scene where one of FL's subordinates learned MC is female and decided not to report to the FL about it because if she did she knew that the MC would be executed. MC, at this point, is in love with the FL. When even the subordinates of the FL are thinking that the MC deserves better...
[collapse]

I love the MC, but the FL is so manipulative that all the feelings MC has for her seem like they're for someone who doesn't exist. It's disappointing that the FL had to be a manipulative one. MC deserves someone who can love her wholeheartedly and I just don't see how the FL can love anyone more than she loves the idea of her brother sitting on the throne. <<less

Its so worth it re reading it and I had done it too!!! I really like how Lin Wan Yue iss!!! The process of how did she become a general!! From lowest to top!! Goshh!!! My ideal. "You don't need to say how much you love me, because I have my own senses. I don't need to stick with you every day, we can each be busy with our own lives. Living is a small but steady stream. Even if I never hear "I love you" for my whole life, but as long as one day, I'm old, and you're still here, that's enough."

This was something the author put in her notes in response to when people complained that there's not enough mushy cute words being spoken... more>> in this novel. And I just want to say... if I met this author in real life, I'd probably fall in love with her no cap😂😂😂

Anyways - to me, this author is to Baihe novels what Priest is to Danmei novels. Pulls you into the plot and the characters and the world of the story. The heart-warming bits and the heart-breaking bits and the heart-in-you-mouth bits... LOVED IT.

Also, Wanyue's ability to love and be loyal in the face of betrayal makes me weep. Her ability to be kind despite seeing the worst the world has to offer inspires me.

Upset because this story is sadder than what I expected and I don’t really like sad stories. Not that this is a sad story, per se, because it does have a “happy ending”, but there were quite a number of sad moments that made me tear and the extra chapters especially made me cry like a baby. I’ll talk about the extra chp later.

First of all, I enjoyed the first 90% of this story. I think it was written well for someone who’s a college student (I think) and also... more>> working part time. This is what I gathered from the author’s notes after some chapters. In fact, the author’s notes talked about some complaints that commenters had about the story and I didn’t really have any complaints at all. I liked both FLs and understood their motivations and why they acted the way they did.

But towards the end, I got really upset at the author's choice of plot point. Pissed off, even. I think the story was really good until this plot point. I did NOT like it. Read spoiler if you wanna know.

Spoiler

Linwanyue was tortured, and tortured to the point where she tried to commit su*cide. And the events after that. Why was that plot point necessary?? It’s also not explained how we got there. Like it just happened and we read about it from Li Xian’s POV when she finds out about it and makes her way there. And I think the perpetrators got away too easily. Li Xian obviously thinks so too and wishes she could have killed him so that makes me feel better but still......

[collapse]

But anyway every time I think about that it makes me sooo mad. It seriously pisses me off. I really hated that part.

And then the ending (actual ending before the extra chapters) also kinda fell flat / felt hollow to me. Maybe it’s because I was already so annoyed by what happened before that that I was dissatisfied with the ending too. Or maybe it really was just unsatisfactory and not my carry-over feelings. It just felt kinda rushed maybe? I feel like a lot of CN novels that I’ve read, the stories are SO GOOD and then the ending is....?? These authors are good at writing beginnings and everything that happens in the middle but when it comes to endings, it’s not that good?

Now, about the extra chapters. This def contains spoilers. Why did I cry like a baby? And why do I say that this does have a “happy ending” but also not really?

Spoiler

Because we read about when linwanyue dies (and also Li xian afterwards). I haven’t cried like that for a story in so long, and I think it’s because I don’t usually read stories where the main characters deaths are written and also the circumstances regarding her death were really sad.

For me, a happy ending / good ending is when they solve all the problems and then finally get to live happily together. If you give me a story where they live happily together but also show me their deaths, that’s no longer a happy ending / good ending to me. That’s bittersweet at best. Even if they ended up together at the end and in the underworld, my whole mood is ruined because they died. I guess this is just personal preference for stories. I don't wanna read about MC deaths!!!

[collapse]

I was just not prepared for how sad this story was gonna be. I don’t really like reading sad stories so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped. I was really looking forward to it : (it’s so hard to find nice yuri stories. Why are they all sad!!! The only sad story that I "enjoyed" was Mistress, I want it~ but at least that story didn't pretend to have a happy ending. It was sad, through and through. The ending was damn freaking sad, but I gave it 5 stars.

I don’t think that was the purpose of THIS story but it made me sad, so it’s a sad story to me. As in, it made me sadder than it made me happy. Get it?

TLDR; this story can be considered to have a happy ending but to some people (like me) it’s not exactly a happy ending. I guess my version of a happy ending is that I don’t see their end. To me, happy endings are when the story is completely ended, they’re still living happily together, still living their lives. <<less

This is a love story - of women, to women, by a woman.

Following the very straightforward title, is this very straightforward story about a young girl who grows up to be a general, desiring only revenge against the Huns who massacred her village.

And a princess too embroiled in court politics where she must navigate the obstacles on the way to establish her young brother as the next Emperor.

... more>> Two people with different paths, different methodologies, yet possessing a similar goal of wanting their family safe.

I loved the slow and steady character development of the MC Lin Wanyue, and how she navigates the army of men as a woman and slowly goes from being a desperate vengeful soldier to a calm and thoughtful general.

The book does not make her "macho" or "manly", it acknowledges all her advantages and disadvantages as a woman and then progresses despite all of it.

Eldest Princess Li Xian, on the other hand, is a cunning and ruthless woman with little to no scruples as she moves people around her as chess pieces. Her development as a person only finally happens when she realises that the chess piece she had wanted to control was not hers any more.

When she finally wanted something she couldn't have, she learned to trust and wait for things to fall into place instead of moving them as she wished.

This story contains lots and lots of beautiful, badass women with their own backstories and desires and wishes. Characters are nuanced, varied and well developed. Everyone has their own motivations, their own struggles and thus their subsequent endings.

It also talks of the difficulty of two women being together without suspicion, and at the same time tells us of their happy endings. But most importantly, it asks us:

"When have women ever lost to men?"

Finally, the translation needs to be mentioned. It is wonderfully done and also includes lots of relevant author notes that should not be skipped!

The MC (Lin Wanyue) disguised herself as her dead twin brother (Lin Feixing) with the only purpose of joining the army to kill 118 enemies to compensate the number of lives lost in her village. She kept a record of making a mark on a wooden board for every kill, planning to burn the board once she had reached her purpose.

The FL (Li Xian) schemes and plots to pave the way for her younger brother (crown prince) to be the next Emperor. Her goal to visit the army is to... more>> garner the support of her uncle which she fails but she has met the MC and began to sent spies to follow 'his' every action.

Spoiler

I like how the author split the story into 2 parts- how 'Lin Feixing' became aware of 'his' feelings towards Lin Xian while rising up the ranks in Military and 'his' protective nature to Li Xian being developed.

The second part is where all the angst came in. Lin Xian made use of 'his' feelings to hide from the public view while operating secretly. The various troubles and pain the MC has to go through such as losing 'his' first friend, her first friend, getting more scars on her body, being punished for failing to track the military supplies, etc.

When the MC knew it was all the FL's doing, she felt hatred and anger, even crushing the jade pendant gift she had prepared for Li Xian. Refusing to return for years even though her gender identity was exposed prior to that moment and the fact that they are already married.

I admit that I cried too much during that arc, for both Li Xian and Lin Wanyue.

To be honest, I was anticipating what everyone has been saying in the comments about how the Female Lead was cruel towards the Main Character, or that Female Lead turned gay soon after she found out MC was a girl...?

LMAO (Sorry to those that said that......................)

Spoiler

Just my opinion but do you really believe that the Female Lead would be that cruel to the Main Character almost to the point that she would've left her at death's door? Also, do you really think that just by one revelation that the MC showed towards the FL that she suddenly fell in love with the MC?

I think not. Sure, she only "seems" to neglect the MC just for gain but I pity the female lead. Just think about it, the story is set in ancient China and the female lead has to endure certain assassinations towards her and her little brother just for the sake of keeping themselves alive. Also, for reasons that she showed such a distant coldness towards the MC was because both of them were struggling with what they're feeling and with what they're dealing with! This story is set in ancient China people!

Please carefully read the story again

[collapse]

In any case, to the readers that has caught a glimpse of this story.

Don't judge a book by it's cover nor what people says.

This kind of book doesn't have that "shiny~, and glittery~, sunshine~" stuff. I advise you to savor what is written in this story and I guarantee that you will also be like me that stayed up two nights just to binge read the story. LMAO
