I Refuse to be a Supporting Character

Description

Gu Jin, your average day-to-day worker, crossed into a novel as the supporting character and best friend and cousin of the female protagonist, Cheng Xin, who was frequently surrounded by men of status and quality. The two cousins believed they’d enjoy this friendship for a lifetime.

But soon, Gu Jin discovered that the body she had crossed into had memories of future events beyond the novel’s plot, including finding out that her marriage would end in utter failure. Her husband, the second male lead named Shao Chong, would neglect their marriage because of his infatuation for Cheng Xin. On the day that Gu Jin was kidnapped and beaten to death, her good husband stayed by her cousin’s side and accompanied her to the hospital.

When Gu Jin transmigrated into this novel world and learned of the truth, she refused to waste this new life as a supporting role for her cousin the way the previous soul had done. She refused to live her life as a spectator in someone else’s love story. No. She would be the protagonist of her own romance in this new life.

First of all, to address the m*lesting and h*rassing parts, he only touched her waist and his hard on poked her but he has clothes on. Another instance was him pressing the FL to the wall, but also nothing happened after that. The first part was problematic, but they agreed on a trial relationship. Everything that follows that trial relationship is consensual.

The FL has a good character. She's straightforward and she knows what she wants. I especially like how ... more>>

she left the ML after having s*x with him, basically treating him as a one night stand.

I also like the side stories after the main story.

It's a good read and I read it nonstop until the end. I gave it three stars because I had to deduct stars for the rushed ending/unresolved conflicts and for not using the FL's brother to its potential. While I was reading, there were conflicts opened up so I expected another story arc. However, I did not expect that the following chapter is already the finale. It's really rushed; it's like this novel was abandoned halfway so the author just went on with a time skip.

For the FL's brother, he has a sister complex and that would have been so cute if they were given more interactions, but sadly the interactions are too little and all you can read about him is him suffering grievances. <<less

This novel was a pretty nice one to read. It contained the right amount of fluff, the mystery, romance etc. I liked how the antagonist mainly the original FL was able to change in the end for the better. Although it was pitiful for how she ended up but she really deserved it. Others may call ignorance a bliss but once it’s taken away from you like from the FL it’s not as blissful as you once thought it would be. Also, I’m glad that the MC was able to... more>> make a friend instead of the usual lonely MC in modern setting novels but what annoyed me the most are the two guys mostly mentioned in the original plot. Such @$$holes they were for treating women like a toy.

Spoiler

ML eventually left the FL after causing a problem for his family. It totally felt as if he just used her body to satisfy his “missing desires” by thinking she was unique to him. Then later on he starts going out with another girl and gets engaged then goes back to the FL for forgiveness. Srsly, an as*hole that needs to be gone.

Then theres the 2nd ML AKA the orig!H’s husband who just used her as a stepping stone to get closer to the FL. Later on regrets losing her by noticing too late that he f*cking f*cked up by ending the phone call when his pregnant wife was kidnapped and killed

[collapse]

The ending was alright but it felt super rushed that it lost the good atmosphere that was built up in a flash. But I was super happy that in the end

Spoiler

We get a POV from the real Gu Jin and how she got another chance to live her life after witnessing the current Gu Jin fix it. The most exciting part was that the long forgotten awesome dude that likes her finally has a chance!!!!! *Fangirls*

I’d rate this 3.5 but since there was a siscon and the guy that likes the real GJ was given a chance then 4 <<less

Why the 3.7 stars??? Sure, nothing groundbreaking happened here but the story is a simple and relaxing read that deserve at least 4 stars imo.

I have so many reasons to rate this novel high:

  • I like that our ML is an overbearing CEO but doesn't force FL in any way. There's definitely no r@pe here! The matter regarding being in a contractual relationship for 3 months was consented by FL as well. FL could very easily reject his offer and forcefully get her bracelet back if she headbu*t him again like what happened in their first meeting lmaooo
  • FL is no weak rabbit which I very much appreciate seeing that MCs like her are rare.
  • I like that the scum ex husband arc didn't dragged on and we were even given an extra chapter to his POV in the previous life where he regretted his s*upidity big time.
  • OriFL and oriML were not portrayed as evil villains but more like annoying cannon fodders that the MCs could just ignore. Sure, oriFL and oriML didn't work out in the end but it's not because of our MCs but rather because of the consequences to their own actions.
  • I like that the original soul of the transmigrated FL's body was given a second chance to relive her life with the guy who likes her even in her first life.
  • Only has 50 chapters so no dragging whatsover. Took me only 2 hours to finish and I came out satisfied.

The beginning of the two main character's relationship and their meeting particularly are less than pleasing no matter how you try to rationalise it. The fact that the male lead never verbalise an apology regarding his almost assault of her under the influence of an aphrodisiac followed by mol*sting behaviour and blackmail induced relationship trial period is a direct no go in my books.

They do redeem him later on with over pampering behaviour and being the more passive person in the relationship but it only goes so far.

The highlight of... more>> the novel for me is the strength of conviction the female lead poses, she was truly strong, opinionated and capable woman who is not easy to bully as well as the extra chapter with the original body owner's husband regreting in the original timeline, followed by the story of her 2nd (3rd?) chance. <<less

*i want give this 3.7 ?

Actually I was hesitant to read this book when I saw its rating, but then I found a comment that said she/he was relieved to give this book a chance. So I also wanted to try reading it because I myself was bored and my reading lists out of stock. And yes, I'm glad this story isn't as bad as the one-star comments say. Indeed, sometimes there are stories where baptiers r*pe the female lead. But there are still many such readers like that kinda... more>> stories or ML. At first, I think this story was like that because someone gave a low grade by saying the matter like about being mol*sted or s*xual harassment/assault. lol there is almost no such thing as (heavy) s*xual assault as they said. (Well, yeah just a little bit (mol*sting MC) but then if you thinking and look again, their status after that was "trial lover". (Maybe some of u thought this was too much but trust me, this still better and maybe nothing other those disgusting truly r*pe ML, unless u really can't tolerance a little bit of moles/skinship ●_●) ML is jealous and possessive, but it is not as bad as those ML from other novels that become yandere. When it comes to plot, maybe this story is not much different from most romance stories but still worth reading as a time filler. The lack about this story, maybe is towards the end of the story suddenly jumped into several years later and seemed to be rushed to finish. But on the other hand if you think about it it's only natural if there are no more enemies. It's just that it seems kinda rushed. Ending, for optimis and kind Heart oe positive ones this (almost) truly good/satisfied because almost everyone got their own hapoy ending and what their are deserved. (As for me. (¬_¬) heheh I both feel yeah, okay good and hmmm... Nope this too good end for some. *idk why but my black heart want that white lotus suffering more before get her HE!

ヽ (`⌒´) ノ<(-︿-)>

My other good side, "child please calm down! Don't be villainess and pray for other chara suffering" ∑ ( ̄□ ̄;)

Also me : "but those people just got a little hardship and mild retribution. *i not yet satisfied for MC's past experiences!

( ̄へ ̄) ┐ (´д`) ┌

But yeah, my stars came from those (happy) ending for othee chara too.

Okay, I will end my words here, sorry if there some mistakes or errors since eng not my mother-tongue, and this only my own opinion so please don't be offended too if we have different opinions or taste. = ̄ω ̄=

Thank u

*btw, the truth romance not always my cup of tea but I will always give a chance for any novel (as long as not sooo damn harsh oe tr*sh) bcs sometime we surprisedly will found something interesting or our cup of tea. Or just a little snack for idle lazy time, when I need some novels yet couldn't find any for main target story for amused or just being boring want something new/other taste. <<less

I didn't mind some of the things that other readers have complained about....

But what made me speechless was this scene:

A side character hired snipers in a foreign country to mu*der the MC and ML because the guy (whom the side character loved) had to apologize to them for a small disagreement at a dinner birthday party.

So there was a daylight assassination of foreign visitors at a large public mall in said foreign country (which surprisingly did not end up on the news or become an international incident) that will become... more>> the catalyst for the ML's epic retaliation.

Wow! Not exaggerated or unrealistic at all!!!!

Forget "the straw that breaks the camel's back, " this is basically "the two-tonne-grand-piano that drops from an apartment building onto the camel's back."

Without reading the ending, I can guess that this incident is the author's perfect excuse to turn the ML into some kind of OP god who had always grasped everything in his hand but never bothered to retaliate, but now that they've threatened the "MC" as well, has become the perfect chance to exterminate his own hidden enemies including the side character (and that guy's) family's 9 generations and have them suffer for eternity while the MC lives happily ever after at the top of the world.

A+ writer of comedy.

This also cracked me up a lot:

Spoiler

Author writes: "But to someone who knew the background between the Shao family and Mu family, they can be described as comparing gold to diamond. To fools, they wouldn't be able to compare the value of a carat of gold to a carat of diamond."

Hahaha. Diamonds have no intrinsic value and depreciate by 50% the moment it leaves the store, because they're not a scarce resource and the sale price is completely fabricated. Meanwhile, gold is the complete opposite. Gold is scarce, liquid, and fungible, aka a very good investment that has always maintained its value over the long term.

. I admittedly forgot this fact after it happened since they seemed to just gloss over it, especially cause MC starts seeing him in a better light (as is common with these kinds of novels).

I've never used Mary Sue to describe a character before, especially cause I read a lot of characters that are written one dimensionally (I'm a sucker for the protags that are beautiful but independent), but god this MC took the cake for me. Not only is she from

made me a bit tired. Feels flat. I stayed for the revenge, but I think I'm gonna cut my reading journey short here.

The story has issues on jumping from location and topic to others a lot, and really I've lost all interest after
Spoiler

ML gets shot in some really random assassination attempt while on vacation and it's obvious this is the trigger to have MC spiral into feelings for the ML for being vulnerable and forcing them to spend a lot of time together. If it's not, well i'll never know I'm not reading anymore

[collapse]

3 Stars because translation is pretty good and doesn't take away the quality of understanding what's going on in the story, and I actually did enjoy reading this until the most recent chapter. I live for drama. This just kind of lacks it.

I'm gonna add that I love

It’s pretty good. I like how the MC decisively cuts out her boyfriend that loved her cousin and moves on with her plans - like distancing from that annoying cousin. Unsure about ML for now, he’s a bit annoying to me but the story is pretty slow paced.

I'd probably put this at 3 stars. Because I feel like it was slightly better than okay, but idk if I would give it a "good!" All in all, it's a decent rendition of your standard "rebirth type stories except this is a transmigration/rebirth story or something. Granted, I'd be lying if I didn't say the toxic start to the main couple's relationship was distasteful but, at that seems to be par for the course for these types of stories, I can't take off too many stars or I'd be... more>> running around one starring everything. So approach this knowing you're gonna have to deal with a slightly chauvinistic male lead who gets interested in the female lead because she rejected him and, oh my god, no one does that.

Shallow relationship aside, main couple was what you'd expect from the main couple, but I was rather disappointed with the MC's original husband and her good sister. There was strong potential for a really good plot resolving those relationships, especially since
Spoiler

her original bae actually had fallen in love with her in the original track line and was super torn up about her death and all before being was reincarnated into this second life later on

Instead, we just got to see the MC get mad, yell at them a bit, then promptly forget they ever existed. Also, the story behind the ML's family didn't really make sense- it was sort of thrown at us in the last couple of chapters and we were supposed to believe that was the reasoning behind everything.

Long story short, the plot setup would get it a 4, random character annoyances get it a 2, while the actual resolutions and the novelty of rebirth and transmigration would average it all out to slightly below or at a 3. <<less

(its my first time to do a review so.. Yah.. And this is just my rant, the reviews really isn't doing any justice for the novel)

I don't get it whats with all the bad reviews?

Like that other review I also first read some reviews to know whats gonna happen to the novel if it were a bad if good novel. If it really wasn't for that review I really won't have read this novel because of the numerous bad reviews.

... more>> Problems that has been pointed out:

  • s*xual abuse/assault - uhh first of all the ML was drugged and it wasn't like he really m*lested the fl. The ML merely hugged her it was only to restrain the (fl) stranger who entered the room his hands were in place and not in some 'other places'. And I mean even if you're a soldier u really wont be in a right mind to really do some complex movements to restrain a person especially if you've been drugged by a very strong drug..
  • Also that other time were the FL suddenly got her period- uhh he wasn't m*lesting the fl!! He only pinned her on the wall!! If he was really m*lesting her then we would have kissed or ravaged her clothes or he would have put his hand on the fl's body and start touching her!! With the ML strength the FL would have no way out..
  • As for the stalking/ background check- Hug that person to restraint the movement, ended up being kicked on the third leg.. So he got mad/annoyed. (I mean if you were to get (lets just say) punched or slapped (just so female can relate or make some sense to it) by someone you would be mad annoyed interested or maybe just want to know the person, right?) He wasn't stalking her!! He just wants to know whos that brave person who kicked him.. And remember he is also someone who does everything he wants and gets what he wants so I guess it was new to him that someone dares to do that. (If someone were to really do that you u I bet you would search up the whole social media just to know to dares.. Yah?)
  • Trial/contract/force relationship- uhh hahaa no.. Noo.. It wasn't force like what the FL always said it was 'trial' relationship, not even the FL thought that it was a force relationship so why would you guys put or judge it as a force relationship? Yes the ML started that trial. Yes ML initiated the trial. Yes ML said it like he force her and it also looks like it because he threatened the FL to not give the bracelet. But what else? That's all. The FL didn't even feel like she was force for her it was a win win for she also has her side in using that trial relationship thats why she agreed. And did the FL looks like she was forced? No! Instead didn't she looks like she enjoyed it? She even feel in love with the ML at some point..
Oh well if only some would please give this a try just until pass that part where they just discuss the trial relationship. I think it ease up alot at the start of that some jealousy part. They don't look force, because they are both playful in hurting each other. So please just give it a try..

The novel isn't that great but its a good read to pass time when bored. Some plot holes not really big just some minors but nah it's not like there isn't a single novel without one. <<less

TLDR: More than 3 stars less than 4, 4 stars with conditions

This novel exceptionally simple and basic, with very little depth, conflict or tension. That said it's still a pleasant bit of escapism that plays around with and demolishes some tropes from chinese pop ;it. You get to see the white lotus, the cold ceo, the big family, transmigration, second chance 2nd ml, all get taken apart in short and comical scenes.

In short it's not bad. Is it good? Depends what you're looking for and expect.

PS not a bad idea... more>> to straight to mtl the current translations are all garbage <<less

It's like a 2 story.

I've seen a few romance stories start with s*xual assault/ "i have been drugged (aphrodisiac) and now I will hump your leg". This what kinda starts of the romance in this novel as well. Not a fan of that.
The romance feels rushed, the engagement is super rushed. And then the kids pop out. Just feels like a big chunk of something is missing.

Yeah, you find some cute moments in the interactions, but it still won't make up for the ridiculous romance and not very good... more>> plot making?
Spoiler

what I mean by that is forcefully increasing MC's affection by making the ML protect her from the bullet. That whole story line is weird. There is this killer who wants to kill ML but doesn't. And he is super duper professional and thinks that ML's life is hanging by a thread when actually the wounds aren't that bad. And that plot point is the turning point in the relationship. Feels forced to me.

... interesting. I guess...?

Either I have read too many of these types second chance/transmigration stories... or THE AUTHOR FORGOT TO MAKE IT WORTH READING... OR! Maybe the author didn't think anyone would actually read it?! ?

Either way, I skimmed though most of it just to figure out what the h*ll happened because it felt like it was taking me on one of those boring a$$ kiddy rides at a carnival. ?

The MC was hard to figure out. All I could tell is that she wanted to help avenge the past... more>> and one up the ML... which got kind of s*upid to me. I came for romance and got childish antics. ? SERIOUSLY?!

Second, I actually kinda sorta felt bad for some of the people she wanted revenge on cause I was more interested in seeing what they would do next since they were far more interesting than the MC.

The plot... still trying to figure out where the f*cking plot peak was... it just... fizzled... ?

And the one time I thought I was going to get smut was a F*ING TEASE!! ?

SOOOOO.... Yeah, 2 stars is all you get. ? And one of those was for the good translation. <<less

This is an ok read but a tad bit forgettable. I managed to make it halfway through until I realized I’ve read it before when it was just completed a few years ago 😅

My biggest issue though would be the writing. ML and FL would be great nuanced characters if only the author could have stopped themselves from repetitive adjectives when setting the scene. It felt like author had to hammer in FL’s features at every single chapter that it was at the point of being annoying.

I really didn't get about bad reviews especially on ML (Mu Min Cheng) first meeting with FL (Gu Jin) being misunderstanding when he was set-up by someone. They might have bad start but their relationship progressed fast and later on they both got good relationship.

I'm glad that the story didn't totally focused on OG plot or OG leads than I initially thought... the plot later on focused on ML's family conflict.

Additionally, I liked that some characters also got depth and regretted some of their choices. In this story, I held... more>> most sympathy with OG Owner but glad we got a hint that she will got her own happy ending in another life.

Is good to pass the time. Though I didn't end up having a clic with the male lead (ignoring the nonconsensual bit at the start) he's not that bad as others, though not so remarkable. If I'm honest, I'm a bit confused as to when they fell in love, it was too clinical and contractual and suddenly MC says they are in love and next thing I knew they were rolling and tossing. I felt more chemistry with others than the male lead, but also the interactions were minimal.

Still, I... more>> think the one thing I really liked was the end, because it counted not only the main couple if not also the extras. The last one with the original host is the one I like best.

Overall very mild. A bit draggy, a bit cold, but still good for a while. <<less
