Nurturing the Hero to Avoid Death

“Please, I implore you to save the world.” This is what a goddess in white says to me in a pure-white space. Such is the standard line that suggests the game is about to begin. Please say this stirring line to boys and girls with sparkling eyes! It’s wrong to direct it to someone like me, who’s exhausted from job hunting! When I declined her politely, she flew into a fit of tears; when I agreed to assist her on small tasks out of reflex, she proclaimed: “it’ll be fine if you just help in the Starting-Village Arc. Please guide the Hero!” Then she tossed me into another world. No, this is a world modeled after a game that this gamer goddess likes…

this is a really cute and fluffy novel

the romance is so sweet !

the MC is a tsunder one that might be really annoying sometimes but he remains a likable character because he is kind and really cute!!

Events are slow and there is no hero with cheat power, but I really like it !

deserves the time

MC's a kindhearted guy playing the role of a villain, can't expect himself to be anything more than that.

Despite knowing that he can't be a villain, he still wants to be able to help the hero become a great and accomplished man. MC isn't the only perspective that the story has, the hero also gets some 'screentime' and we learn of his mental struggles and how he's grateful for someone like MC being there for him, even if he acts like a tsundere. Give this a read!

I would say it is deserving of a 4ish ⭐ (idk how to make it 4 ⭐. It by no means is a masterpiece, but it is overall a nice fluffy romance, so 4. It is a fun read & I enjoy how the ML understands the mc's boundries for the most part (see spolier 2 ex 3/4). (I kinda forget about the spolier ex 2/3 event because it has really no lasting impact in the story & feels kinda out of character, but it can ruin the story, especially... more>> if you haven't seen this troupe too much or think about it as a real world event (I unfortunately have seen the troupe/know of it as a central plotline in plenty of other stories, so I am numb to it + I compartmentalize things).

The butler is an amazing side character!

It can be childish, but I see that as a positive (makes for a light fun read). The MC
Spoiler

definitely fails at being a villian & he makes it clear that he cannot act. But he has a strong will to do his best as the villian (even though he fails) & to change the fate of the village. He is kinda detached from himself in away, he fights for his survival, but will put the plot or the hero before himself. He is a giver, kind and selfless, this is most likely due to the trauma of losing his love ones in his og life. Thus the main reason he makes a poor villian is natural personality & trauma.

[collapse]

That being said the story might not be for everyone: spoliers ahead tigger warning
Spoiler

s*xual harassment & Assult could be handled better. ()

Ex 1: The brocon. The MC advoids his brother, b/c the bro is such a bro-con that if the MC let him, he would mol*st the MC. Nothing happens, but this could be triggering to some

EX 2: The attempted r*pe of MC. The top leader of a the imperial knights tries to r*pe & keep/kidnap MC, b/c he has a crush on mc's relative who he looks like. MC escapes before he is r*ped. Turns out the father basically sold MC to the creep. So the creep is of high power & related to royality; which leads him to be punished by extreme demotion to boarder stations. MC is told to keep quiet, so basic corruption of those in power (expected, but not okay) (Honestly, the creep could have gotten off scott free with his creditals, so I am content he got some punishment & it feels realistic in the sense that people of power have faced less consequences for far worse crimes). ... Ex 2.5: Now the father, MC forgives his father originally like a "staint", but when he does he didn't know it was for selling him. So it's kinda unclear if the father faces any punishment or lasting resentment from the MC (I do wish the MC was more angry and asked for something or the grandfather knew what happened to his grandson (the mc), because then he would had released all hell onto the father.) I also want to point out that some surviors struggle with telling their story for multiple reasons and this can be seen in the MC, being to embarrassed to state that he was only grouped & not r*ped. This had a level of realism that of s*xual abusers normally don't face jail time for one assult ex Dahive Vanity, US Olympic gymnastics, Epstein (the pattern seen here is these men have multiple cases against them & had certain level of authority + it took multiple of survivors speaking up of anything to occur (Dahive has yet to be prosecuted, the fbi is looking into his cases, so hopefully he will get whats coming to him).

Ex 3 this is a continuation of what happened after MC escaped so heran to the ml, ML is furious that the MC was attacked & drugged. So the MC is clearly drugged, yet still appears rational. MC helps him get off, because of how rational the MC appears, it makes this slightly dubcon as he gives constent. This is really the only time the ML is questionable as in later chapters he respects MC boundries even when he is super tempted. (I wished the ML didn't rub one out, but this is not an uncommon troupe the ML "helping" relieve their love interest. (90% of omgea alpha love stories are like this ex omega heat)).

Ex 4: ML does plenty of dubcon kisses, I say dubcon as the MC doesn't really protest & appears to like the kisses. (Definitely seen worse.)
Ex 5: The MC doesn't appear to have any long term trauma form his almost r*pe. It appears that he might have the blocked out the event or the author just threw the event in to create a reason for nsfw content.

[collapse]

*conclusion of the spoiler* It's a cliche troupe that didn't need to be in the story and doesn't really add anything to the character development, so by skipping chapters 17.3 to 20.1 the story remains fluffy & unproblematic (minus the bro-con). But I would like to point out that there is a level of realism in the effects on the creep (s) /father that can come off as making light of the event or as a reflection on how creeps like them are treated in the realworld (I have no clue if the realism was the author's intent). One postive from the chapters is the ml's anger towards the creep (s), shows his love for MC. I feel like the event was added for the readers that need nsfw early on in a book & cannot appreciate a slow burn.

I hope everything makes sense & I am not trying to diminish re-life events/survivors. I just compartmentalize book worlds from real world well, which allow me to block out the event in the story & treat it as it never occurred. <<less

In the first few chapters I really got second-hand embarrassment from Lian. Like- I can't believe that he's that bad at acting. But I'm here for it. Fluffy! Spicy! And, good characters. All I can ask for. Still waiting for it to be finished by the translators (which does a great job at translating. Ily translator) cause I'm a sucker for good translations. This is my cup of tea, I repeat- my cup of tea! Maybe not yours, but why you gotta rate 1? Lol. Anyways, Try it!

I'm really enjoying this! The character dynamic between MC and ML is pretty refreshing and their relationship is pretty well written and very enjoyable. The layout of the story is a little bizzare, events will often be repeated so you get both characters point of view which took a moment to get used to since they don't always clarify who's POV it is. The translators are doing a really amazing job and I can't wait to see where this goes!

I have complicated feelings about this novel.

1.) Characters

First off, I LOVE Lian (MC). Truly. He's a total tsundere, but I can understand where he's coming from. Since he's someone sent from the other world to replace Lian, he has to act as the oh-so-arrogant-and-likes-to-bully-people Lian. Other than that, he had a hard time accepting being bent towards the ML. Also, he has a certain insecurity that the ML is going to leave him for the heroine in the future (poor him I want to hug).

Alfred, the ML, is an okay... more>> guy. He's strong, very hard-working, and cherishes MC very much. It's interesting to see how after constantly interacting with the MC, he succeeded in tearing down the wall the MC built and becoming lovey-dovey with him. He's very grateful towards the MC that later blossoms into love and thus he continues to protect him.

Speaking of character development, the only characters which we can truly dive into is the MC and the ML since on some parts we can see things on both points of view. But other than that, the character development on the side characters are very lacking. I'm specifically talking about Lian's family. We rarely got to see moments with Lian's family. Lian's brother actually has a lot of potentials, but sadly we don't get to see much of him aside from being a pe*vert and very protective towards Lian. It makes it seem like the characters are very 2D.

2.) Story

Story-wise, the way the events are written is kind of weird...? Like, one or two events happen, and then there's a time skip. This repeats over and over again until six years after the MC transmigrated. This makes it seem like there are many things that we miss. As a reader, it makes me quite confused about how the story progresses. Since the story starts when both of them were 12 and until they're 18, I think it might've been better to make the story more compressed and make it to 3-4 years span instead and drop the time skip.

Spoiler

Also, I think it's a bad move for Lian to prepare for the horde by himself instead of utilizing his resources. He's loaded, and his father got crazy influence even towards the knight order. Seeing how he on some occasions is able to persuade his father to do things, he should've done that and persuade his father to do research instead of exhausting himself. He even got heavy insomnia and stomach pains due to this. I feel sorry for him, but at the same time, it's kind of his fault. Though, at the later part of the story he convinced the ML to help him and also the knights to help him (should've done that sooner boo... but anyways).

[collapse]

Another thing that I want to point out is how funny the title is. Yes, it indicates how the MC is nurturing the hero, but later on he's the one who got nurtured instead. I love that. It's not the usual 'ML saving a damsel in distress' kind of story, but it shows how both make an effort to make the relationship work and communicate with each other. They both have their own situation and traumas but they accompany and heal each other throughout their relationship. It's very beautiful *sniffs* <<less

I read a lot of novels, but this here really stands out from the rest. The MC is acting out the role of the cannon fodder villain to the best of his abilities and trust me it is not the usual "reincarnated as the villain character".

There is a good balance of character development, world building and fluff with sparse moments of darkness scattered through this.

I really adore this novel for the slow build up of the relationship between MC and ML. There isn't a sudden rush to just be together... more>> but rather the slow coming together of a couple we can all root for. <<less

This is really good. If you are looking for transmigration, complex characters you can root for, a light and fluffy story, and lots of cute romance scenes, this is for you. Honest to god one of my favorite BL novels. I feel in love with the MC... he baby..... but for real he's just really sweet and charismatic, and I don't want to spoil everything but the conflict of the series actually makes sense and is believable, and you really root for the characters... You can really feel the... more>> love they have for each other, and its not just "i like you. do you like me? great lets f*ck" <<less

i absolutely love the interaction between the MC and the ml, they r so cute and fluffy and stuff. The story is also progressing very smoothly. But tbh I don't rly like the MC, he seems too fragile and mild and timid and dense. But dont get me wrong, I REALLY love him. He often gives an aura that makes me want to protect him, a typical cinnamon roll. And hes just so cute.

This is a very pleasant read and is personally one of my favourites.

The main character is driven to carry out his predetermined role as a ‘villain’ to tyrannise the hero- but he doesn’t quite have a good grasp on how to bully and torment him. Nevertheless, it is still admirable how the main character tries and how comical it is that instead of bullying, he ends up nurturing the hero like a mother bird would for her hatchlings.

It is sweet and heartfelt, slow but not sluggish, genuine and gentle.

However, with... more>> all stories, it is not perfect. But to me, it’s close!

Let’s pray that the ending is just as good, too. Give it a read! <<less

It is a good novel. The MC is really wimpy but I like him. He is sweet. The ML is the typical cold ML but there is some good amount of character development. The pace is pretty slow but it's okay, you get time to appreciate their relationship grow, especially since MC was straight before transmigrating.

One thing I'd like to add that there's some amount of dubious consent in there. And also consent under influence of drugs which rubbed me the wrong way. But I'm giving it a chance because... more>> the story is quiet good. <<less

So, unpacking this story. We've got three main elements: 1) Transmigration, 2) MC's Role as a Villain, and 3) the Relationship Between MC and the Protagonist. (Note that the below aren't actually spoilers, I just did it to conserve space.)

  1. Transmigration:
Spoiler

It's easy, at first, to dismiss this novel as just another cut-and-dry isekai novel. It's got added BL elements sure, but the premise - that is to say, the MC accidentally falling into another world - is about the same. What the summary doesn't tell you, however, is the amount of world-building that went into this novel. At only chapter 9, I already know so much about the world the MC now lives in. I know about his family, their relationships, their political goals and machinations. I know about how this world works: the things that drive people in it. Most importantly, I know a hell of a lot about the backgrounds of not only our lovely main character but also the protagonist of the world he's found himself in.

It's slower paced, to be sure, and it doesn't have any face-slapping or revenge so maybe it's not for everyone, but I enjoyed (and still enjoy) it immensely. The characters feel 3D. Real. They're quirky; they have their own goals, dreams, and desires - and even if those ambitions don't always make sense, it never seems out of character. The author did a great job of presenting the characters, honestly.

[collapse]

2. MC's Role:

Spoiler

This has got to be the selling point of this novel really. Like - and this gets into spoilerish territory here (but it's a review, so go figure) - this goddess picks out the smol*st bean in the jelly bean jar to transmigrate into her failing world and get the protagonist to amp up his game so they don't all die a terrible death. Basically, our MC is supposed to be a villain, and spoiler alert: he's terrible at it! He's good at his main purpose, however, which is to get the protagonist to push himself. In short, our MC isn't a good villain, but he's also not a saint. He's a person with flaws and lots of character development, which is surprisingly rare in BL novels. (Or just online novels in general.)

[collapse]

3. Relationship:

Spoiler

Ah, yes, the moment we've all been waiting for: their relationship. Now, I know what you're thinking... "Who is seme? Who is uke?" But all I have to say to that is: Who cares! This novel acknowledged the tropes of seme and uke, accepted them, and then proceeded to add so much depth to the characters that I didn't even care that it was tropey. I usually dislike very overt tropes like 'small, sensitive uke' and 'large, overbearing seme', for example, and this novel does take aspects of that, yes, but for the most part you're too busy questioning wtf is going on and feeling bad for the characters and/or laughing at their misfortunes to recognise the tropes hidden away within their characterisations.

In essence, this novel portrays basically how an actual relationship might work. We're still in the pre-slash stages, however, so this might change as their interactions deepen in meaning, but yeah: no super tropey bullsh*t meant to fetishise gay people. (Which, being gay myself, was quite nice to read.)

[collapse]

TLDR; This is a pretty solid BL novel with plenty of world-building and anticipation. It's slow-paced, with lots of internal dialogue and very few POV changes. Most of the focus lays with the relationships between characters but the plot is still meaty enough to capture one's interest. It's a unique take on a common trope - one that I think was done quite well - and I'm eagerly awaiting more! <<less

The story was good and very satisfying to me since I like tsudere bottoms, besides it has a good world building and the romance was cute too. So the reason I'm giving this novel 2 stars is: 👇

Spoiler

The top (Alfred) is overall very plain and sometimes aphatic, but his worse part for me is how in EVERY "physical" scence with the bottom he's some how coercing or/and physically restraining the bottom, like for the first ones I could tolerate because things like this are common in novels, but in chapter 19.4, right after Lian (the bottom) escapes a >>r*pe ATTEMPT<< instead of comforting him and you known preserve his well-being Alfred straight up r*peS HIM (because ykow having s*xual intercouse with someone influenced by drugs who's REPEATEDLY saing that they dont want to do it count's as r*pe). And it's not even like Lian life was some how at risk because of the aphrodisiac, he could simply sleeped it through (like he was planning to). Anyway I didn't read past this and I don't plan to, I'm not really bothered with reading dark stuff, but it boils my blood when something sickening as this happens and they like it's was nothing or was a good thing.

[collapse]

If you don't want to read the spoiler part I will shorten it: don't read this if you don't like tops that are too coercive. <<less

MC is such a doormat and also at the same time blames alfred for being attacked first like wtf he was trying to save you? Like no gratefulness at all. And tahts a constant too.

ML is also a little pushy, but he doesnt really go overboard since he stops when really told to.

But really the characters are just a little too two dimensional. The plot progression has very little pay off. Im not really gonna conplain a lot about the smut since thats not the main focus but its clumsy,... more>> not that the characters are clumsy but the writing is clumsy.

Its not the worst thing, but the pacing is also very poor, the plot seems stale. Its just eh. <<less

The narrative doesn't make much sense. The reading experience isn't pleasant and I think I will be dumber in English if I continue reading this. It's better than mtl tho and follows the usual Japanese novel format so it might not be a big deal for others.

I don't like the character interactions and I haven't read anything gripping so far. It would've been better if the characters are more fleshed out in the beginning, even just the MC. Without knowledge of the usual tropes, this story will not make much... more>> sense. <<less

I give it 5 stars, but it could go down if the rest of the story was not satisfying.

This novel is Great so far! I like our MC who's Tsundereness is not because he has Sharp mouth or anything. Because at the beginning he has to act like the Canonfodder villain who act Bossy Highty Mighty and Spoiled Rich Boy. But he stopped act that after he finish school. Everyone know he's Nice, and they adore him.

But I especially love the ML. I'm not saying he doesn't have Flaw, but... more>> so far his flaw was barely noticable, and I really like his Personality, Character Growth and all.

Back to our MC. Our MC easily cry. Not the Bawling kind of cry. But the Emotional one where he feel Emotional he doesn't realise he look like he might cry at any moment or he actually let out tears without realise it. He's the silent cry type. We realise he cry because ML keep pointed that out in distress.

MC is Flawed alright. But the being the Crybaby one is NOT his Flaw! He rarely encounter Intense situation, so I guess I can understand why he can let his guard off. But dang that was Frustrating af. You can think of that as his flaw or not.

Seriously pray so hard the rest of the story is Satisfying ! 🙏🙏🙏 I'm so worried... 😟😥 I'm in Cliffhanger after all... Ch37p4 <<less

Well, this is a good story if you want to take a break from psychological novel that you're reading, though it has attempted r*pe, but I cannot stand the MC's pe*verted brother!, why is this common in anime and Japanese novel, it was so weird reading those paragraphs

Like this one:

No no no. No way. Hehehe. There’s no way Lian will do that...

... more>> But if he does, then... I’ll be obligated to satisfy him, am I right?

After all, he’s my cute little brother. As his older brother, it’s my responsibility to look after him and his needs. It’s part of my duties to dissipate the heat from his body.

It’s my obligation to pamper, cherish, and protect him...

Ah, my nose is bleeding again.

Bruhhhh? 😭😭😭

And don't expect too much from the MC, he acts like a child, but my standard isn't high so I think he is still cute, I just don't like the big bro😩 <<less

If you're looking for a story where the MC is at his given task (in this case, being a villain), then this story isn't for you.

MC's premise is interesting
... more>>
Spoiler

He gets dumped into the body of a cannon fodder villain, which he completely fails at being since he ends up being tsundere instead. Now normally I'd be disappointed, but considering that I knew this would be a fluffy story, I didn't mind it. The MC himself does say that he's a terrible actor and that he probably wouldn't be able to pull off being the villain. It doesn't help that MC himself is a naturally caring person, it would be completely unrealistic for someone like him to be able to pull off being the villain.

[collapse]

That said, he does manage somehow, sort of, to do what his role did for the ML. Even if ML did end up falling for him, lol.

The novel itself is very lighthearted and fluffy, and while it does have some angst and serious 'events', the focus of the novel is ultimately the developing relationship between the MC and the ML. Of course, there are some chapters where r-18 stuff happens.

As the translator pointed out, the chapters where such things happen are marked by a star (*) in the chapter title so watch out for those.
Spoiler

Chapter 19 has s*xual assault that didn't really lead to anywhere and some non-consensual things going on between ML and MC. Regardless, this chapter in particular definitely is one to be wary of if you don't like those things.

Aside from a few times where his actions and thoughts are dubious (he is a teen crushing hard on a dense individual, but still), the ML is ultimately mindful of MC and what he wants. It's rather amusing how he's able to pull promises from MC though, but around this time MC's definitely interested in him. He just hesitates because he knows the game that this world is based on as well the important characters in it.

[collapse]

I won't lie and say that this novel is perfect, I doubt there are any. The novel is long because of the long chapters (the fact that there are several parts to one chapter where each part is also long should be a clue), but this is mainly because of MC's musings, which can get tiring at times.

Despite my misgivings about the story, I found myself enjoying it! As I've mentioned before, it's a fluffy story with some spice, you can't really expect it to have what it doesn't portray itself to have. If you're looking for a fluffy story that focuses mainly on the relationship of the couple, then I do recommend you read this one. You'll find yourself rooting for the couple!

The translator and the editors are definitely allowing this story to be it's best in the English language, so thank you to them for their hard work! <<less
