I am a voracious reader of isekai and reincarnation-type stories. Korean novels are very different from Japanese ones and are more plot-heavy with understated humor, I’ve found. This is truly a remarkable gem of a story. I fell upon it through Wuxiaworld and have continued to read this every day. The hero is really interesting, and so is the world-building. Details and characters are not forgotten, and the plot is even tighter than Toika’s previous novels. In fact the entire cast is unique.

I always read reviews of each series before... more>> I try them, and would earnestly urge you to ignore the petty 1/2 star ones to give this a try IF you enjoy an interesting RPG story and a character going through growth with very limited fan service/romance. It’s really a shounen story. <<less

It’s a funny and light hearted character in a dark world. The characters are believable and it’s not just some mindless power fantasy like so many other.

After reading 4 of Toika's novels; ICDS, EER, IRFN and finally, SFF, I can safely say without any shred of doubt that Toika has found the "algorithm" to efficiently churn out pages, satisfying the common denominator of web-novel enthusiast. The algorithm that is very commonly seen from Chinese WN authors. Disappointing.

Lets talk about the distinctive features of this novel.

  • MC
A rationale MC. Cold at times, empathetic to the plight of others if it does not benefit him, with a shred of dark humour, and with glimpses of his past humanity. A... more>> manipulator, who derives pleasure in controlling others to do his bidding. An actor at heart, with a flawless facade even the closest of allies have no knowledge of. A happy-go-lucky sociopath.

Do not read this novel if you dislike an MC with the aforementioned characteristics as this novel is very character-driven.

  • Overarching plot & side characters
Interesting enough to pull the readers attention. The light at the end of the tunnel that makes you curious of the other end during times of boredom. Fun and bright dialogues with a messed up, empathetic MC makes for some laughter. Very "Toikaesque" if you are familiar with it.

  • Translations
Other than the fact that the translator needs to desperately know the difference between the "ground" and "floor", there really isn't much to complain about. Pretty good overall. 7.5/10

  • Pacing
The worst aspect and biggest problem of this novel. The number one criminal that always made me stop reading after 5 chapters from fatigue. The same criminal from Toika's other novel, IRFN. A story without proper pacing is like walking on a road full of lego bricks, barefoot. The problem with this novel is that the pacing - or more specifically, the tension, is on a high for the vast majority of the novel.

What does MC do after completing a few dungeons and fighting bosses for 50 chapters? Immediately embark on another dungeon dive, with similar pacing to the previous dungeons. Algorithm.

  • Word padding
Not the unnecessarily long 6 paragraphs of scenery descriptions "world-building" of CNWN, but unnecessary clutter, magic engineering word vomit, LitRPG system and definitions we were reminded of dozens of times. Expositions on magic for the umpteenth time, MC and his waifu's 10 paragraphs of dialogue related to their magical expertise... add in the terrible pacing this novel has and you have a better and more organic sleeping pill. Algorithm.

Toika has transcended from the little writer with aspirations, with substance in his pen and integrity to a cookie-cutter WN author doing the rounds of churning pages upon pages of well marketed, best value and efficient pages to the common denominator. A machine with no chinks on its armour with a perfected algorithm for bang for the buck WNs.

But it does not change the fact that the novel is not that bad. Comparatively speaking to other WNs on the market, it is a decent novel. And despite the old readers of Toika's work like myself being disappointed multiple times, we are still here simply because of the "Toika-flare". A good analogy would be comparing the novels after EER to high-class fast food. Not the regular fast food you find commonly here, but despite Toika transcending to an algorithm machine, he churns out high-class fast food.

I will still be reading future completely translated novels of Toika... as I know that "he" is in there somewhere.

4/5

solid 2.5!!! Bang average compared to EER. Seems toika's quality went down. Too similar in style of writing and plot to "I reincarnated for nothing". MC has no specific goals as to why he is moving forward. Also the MOST ANNOYING rant about this novel is like the earlier mentioned crap novel all female characters for no sane reason has mental issues and wants the love from MC. while MC gives d*ck lines like "i dunno why this is happening..." blah blah. why the F cant he say he doesnt... more>> want a love relationship? but no. he jokes and flirts with them, have lap pillows with them and then tells the reader I dunno why the F the girls are like this? JUST PLEASE TOIKA. STOP WRITING ABOUT HAREM MC'S. You suck balls at this. I sometimes wish Toika and IET could mix novels. I bet you'd get something sweet when that happens. <<less

All around great. Except for one thing. A swallowed star level ending. F*cking awful. Among the worse I've ever seen and it left me, frankly, pissed off. Even the editor, who had written an April fools version of the ending, said it was eerily similar. When the reality is so similar to an April fools joke, the day of the most absurd happenings, you know something's wrong. Don't bother reading this. You may enjoy reading it, even up to the end (even though it gets somewhat boring halfway through), but... more>> the ending utterly ruins any bit of enjoyment it might have dredged up at that point. <<less

This novel, is one of the best made by Toy Car, if not the best (even better than Everyone Else is a Returnee), I love it so much, it has so much content, plot, and character development that’s totally worth to read, this is my second review, I seldomly do so, but I can guarantee that it’s actually one of the best Korean novel’s so far.

There is no s*upid plot (sometimes the plots are a little too much but pretty exciting).

Spoiler

The main character starts pretty well, as a normal person would, and he develops himself in a steady pace, not like other novels that he would just kill 1 mob and be OP then.

The MC most of the times is weaker than his enemies (and yes he is weaker than them, at least at the raw power,

Spoiler

he himself says so at the last chapter

[collapse]

) but he wins by his craftiness, and that’s the meaning of his existence.

Overall what I can say is that this is a complete artwork.

I'm not sure if it's because of the translator chopping up the chapters into multiple pieces but it doesn't feel good to read this novel for some odd reason.

The MC is OP and this makes the novel even less interesting to read because you know nothing bad is ever going to happen

It's a Toika work so you probably know what you are signing up for right now. Interesting plot that relies on twists, an OP MC that transcends the setting, and a strong comedy element that relies carries the novel. The author does a good job pushing the harem part of the story off as long as possible, but he seems to always make the MC the only competent male thus the "logical" outlet for all the female admiration. It's the KN version of a shonen manga, but that doesn't mean... more>> it's a dumb story. It's accessible, and presents everything straight to the reader, but it still keeps enough mystery to keep the reader guessing how certain plot points are going to resolve.

Strengths:

Good plot.

Relatively unique setting and MC skills

Comedy

Characters have a defined sense of identity and stick to it

Good at progressing the setting as the story progresses

Weakness:

Can info dump at time, especially regarding skills

Relatively one-dimensional side characters.

Follows similar formula for MC's growth path as his other works

MC is always able to out-think everyone else

Because characters have all lived for so long before the story, they don't really change much during the story

Author isn't good at writing romance <<less

This is pretty much the only novel you'll find where the hero gets it on with his horse.

And they're both skeletons.

Jokes aside, SFF, is a decent read. It has somewhat of a similar style to other works from Toika, but up to now it feels somewhat more fleshed out than other novels. It will take time before we can see if the character gets any development (in character).

In terms of story logic, the novel is a bit iffy. The novel is more of a casual read than a serious... more>> one, and the writing itself makes this quite clear. It is fairly well paced, although there is a danger of the MC becoming OP very quickly.

Overall, would recommend. If you're not afraid of horses, that is. <<less

The best way to describe this novel is to describe it as a burger.

A burger lacks in nutrition, yet tastes really good. Moreover, it also doesn't amount to much, leaving you unsatisfied, and thus make you crave more.

This novel lacks a ton of things. There exist many plotholes, unsatisfying character developments, a few unpleasant plot progressions, and a ton of other issues within this novel. But as I've mentioned before, this novel is akin to a burger.

The action portrayed in this novel is top-notch. Not to mention, the way the... more>> author wrote the levelling system in this novel was superb, as expected of Toika. As a result, this novel is a really fun casual read. If your preferred type of story is power fantasy, then you'll come to love this novel. However, like a burger, this novel also doesn't amount to much, and thus would make you crave more.

The ending to this novel was abrupt and unsatisfying. The author could've showed us what happened afterwards, maybe some afterstories. But nope, there was nothing. Even the epilogue, which was supposed to show you what happened after the last chapter, was more like an explanation of the last chapter. So in reality, there was no epilogue. Toika fumbled the ending really hard.

Overall, I'd give this novel a solid 4/5. I originally wanted to give it a 3/5, but I honestly think that it's a disservice to the novel, since it was a very fun read. <<less

Did not expect to like this as much as I did. Worth reading.

Because I finished almost all the good novels here I came back to ones I thought I wouldn't like, this one is one of them. I quit reading so many of them midway because of clichés but even though this one had some clichés, I still enjoyed it all the way.

Don't be afraid to give this a go.

Until the last chapter, it was a 3. Some very overused jokes, constant perfect luck, inconsistent and vague systems... it wasn't great, but it was funny and good enough to be readable. That last chapter though... the author got bored and didn't feel like writing the ending so he just wrote "the battle ended through some random bs, the end". Nothing about what happens to side characters, no resolution of sub plots, nothing.

Damn I thought I've prepare myself when I reading the review about bad ending. I was not, at all.
The ending make it look like the novel got axed mid writing or something. It left so many question unanswered, so many plot hook that not being resolve. I thought the ending was some kind of title drop joke to spite readers or something. Seriously what kind of ending is that, and it was at the climax too.

One Sentence: Great Story, terrible ending.

Story details the growth of a skeleton and how he affects the characters around him, and kind of slowly discovers the secrets of the world in a levelling up kind of style. Portrayed as always power-hungry but lacking relationship-wise as he is too focused on getting power.

One of those stories where you go ah, it was a good read. Except the aftertaste is very lacklustre.

Unfortunately, they didn't consider the ending much, if the beginning was a 10, the consideration they put at the end is... more>> a 3. Can't help but be salty about it because while the story is really trying to stop the world from ending, they were also preparing for the future in terms of how they would proceed in the world after they saved it.

Ending the story at the moment where the world is saved is like giving you ice cream that leaves no aftertaste, did I eat it? Yes. Do I remember and savour it? No.

Disappointing ending, but saw the comments mentioning this is Korean style, not really my type :' (Great story though. <<less

The novel was like..

『Mc: *Breaths*

System: YOU ACQUIRED A SKILL! 』 I think the powerups from IRFN written by the same author is more acceptable compared to this. I was excited 'cause this novel looks like it's a fun novel.. But.. Chapters 1-10 was at least good but immediately lose it after that, I got so bored that I found myself just skimming around chapters 20 as it lacks contents and all it has is dumping blessings on the mc! A hell lot of moments like 『MC doing something not-so-important』then it suddenly... more>> lead to the MC getting unreasonable powerups like he killed some BIG BOSS.

The ratio of luck and setbacks is too unbalance. It was 9:1 ratio of 9 for luck and 1 for setbacks– no probably even lower than 1 'cause even the setbacks was in truth gives him MORE benefits like.. He'll lose a certain weapon then GET several things in return or he'll be get lots of LOWKEY NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES then get a shit-ton of rewards. Hahaha really, this novel.

The MC also get something called a Special Skill which is unique and was newly invented at that very moment he got it. He "Get" it but the system made it look like the MC "Made" it, system speaking how great of feat making such skill and praising the MC.. I was like 'what did the MC even do?' The MC did nothing like so important at all, I can buy it if it says the skill was awaken but the system definitely give the credit for the MC. Toika definitely trying hard to shower the MC some greatness and making him look much much more amazing than he actually is to the point the whole thing felt forced.

The System here isn't an AI, but it's acting like an AI (with a bit of emotion) from time to time and it felt really out of place and Awkward. It uses phrases like saying "You're still weak as Toddler!", saying "You've done something Outrageous! This is unheard of!" I mean these two is fine in narration but the System is suppose to be a system but it sometimes displays a hint of emotion but the author still sticks on the idea that the System is merely just a system, sometimes it even gives the MC some praise from time to time. (Author probably done this unknowingly since he often give praises for the MC on narration, so the system's window pop ups feel like a talking narrator) This becomes really awkward to me, should've put more effort on system imo.

The system from Tensura is both Serious and Funny but it definitely has place and time for being serious and being funny.

The AI Chip of Leylin from WMW which quite cool because of it's seriousness and it really looks like a real talking system.

The System here is aiming to be a serious type but failed since the author doesn't change the way he narrates and the way the system way of talking.

The main character was said to be likable from some forum, as I was searching for a novel with "likable" character I don't think the MC is likable at all and in truth I'm more annoyed. The MC always get worked up for something so trivial like when absorbing memories then he suddenly getting angry just because he heard the a familiar name in memories he gets from undeads that he killed saying "This a**hole. Why are you so famous?!". The MC is also ungrateful to his skills and always complaining about the skill. It's an OP skill but still complain a lot.

Still with the REPEATEDLY unfunny jokes of the author makes this more unbearable. Oh I atleast give a few chuckles for the first 10chaps but well toika is famous for using one joke repeatedly. That made the novel dull.

Well maybe I'm being a bit mean. I probably just having a hard time accepting a low tier novel since I just finished god-like novels like Dungeon Def and Mushoku Tensei.

If I ignore the unreasonable power ups, corny jokes.. Well I guess i'll give this novel a 3 at most.

I'm not really into authors who put their MC on a pedestal, I prefer a more neutral author who's not sucking on their Protagonists. But this novel is good for beginner readers. Since if you're beginner you won't know whether there's too much plot-armor and unreasonable elements and can just enjoy the read. <<less

Everyone has different taste and I won't argue with that but it doesn't mean this novel is not good. For me its great and I liked it.

Every novel has its flows but it doesn't mean that because of it you wouldn't enjoy the novel so I'm just gonna list the thinks I've liked or intrigued me while reading this novel.

Spoiler

*It's not always that the protagonist of the story is a skeleton what's more his main partner is a skeleton too!

*It has leveling system, skills and titles that the MC would acquire. What I liked is how unique the leveling system is and how interesting that bones would be a big part of the MC's growth.

*The world that the story is told is quite simple but I like the surface and the underground empire concept. It feels simple yet complex at the same time.

*I liked the comedy in this novel though most of it is a cliche. Its how you use cliches at the right moment that makes your audience laugh.

*Supporting characters, villains and others are also portrayed quite nicely.

*I liked the trickery, manipulation and deceit that was used mostly in this novel and how the MC uses this skills to acquire allies or eliminate his enemies.

[collapse]

All in all this novel is a good read.

Always read a new novel with an open mind. There's no harm in trying to check it out. If you enjoyed it then wonderful, if not at least appreciate the hard work the author made.

In the end its best to just relax, chill, have fun and just enjoy reading it.

Don't think too much you'll just make it worse and hard on yourself to enjoy this novel. <<less

Good novel ruined by a seemingly rushed ending.

Classic Toika. He never quite manages to write out a decent ending.

I enjoyed 52 chapters but the 53rd one ruined the novel for me. I felt that the ending was extremely lackluster. Probably the worst ending among all of Toika's works. I thought that ICDS had a pretty crappy ending but this novel took it a step further. Shame really. Apart from the ending, I very much enjoyed reading this novel.

I was expecting a kind of Isekai novel with some interaction between some characters.

This novel should be read like a VRMMO novel, as it's more about grinding and farming (as in the gaming term).

Most VRMMO novel are not my cup of tea because they mostly focus on the game and less about the characters' interactions. Or sometimes we may find ourselves in a battle for too many chapters.

... more>> In any case, I'll try to read at least the first 20 parts.

Also; I still have no idea how he levels up, there's a caption for each drop/loot, for each power ups he goes through, but nothing about experience or levels (besides a caption saying he leveled up and his status). <<less
