Absolutely ruthless.

The MC has no human sense of compassion left, so you won't see a villain that makes random positive moral choices because he felt like helping people. Author isn't being inconsistent about writing an absolutely heartless character, his moral value is at minus through and through.

MC also has no cheat in a sense, an extremely limited use of his cicada and his extremely low luck always keeps him in the red most of the time.

it's good, but i'd like it even more if the author was not being a pus*y.

if you are writing about a villain, write about the villain, why worry about others opinions,

if you are cowardly enough to give 2 chapter explanations for every evil act the villain commits, why do it? why can't M.C. Be a be scum bag or an a**hole, why does he need to have lofty indifference about life & death. And the temperament of Budda, just to be a piece of shit? if the author was... more>> more un-apologetic and wrote as he pleased, not giving a F*ck about the reader's opinions, I would have liked this more.

.

but, as Buddha ones said: "If you are eating from your parent's earnings you should STFU and listen to them." The same goes for all authors when it comes to their readers, so it can't be helped.

*****

that said, it's a really good story, it get's better with time & and the author stops giving such s*upid reasons / excuses for M.C.'s actions. Me like :) <<less

This novel is good for me because it portrays real life psychological mentality of human such as succumbing to greed and etc. It is bloody hell for it involves a lot of battle, killings, and death. The world in here involves cultivation, creation and setting the Gu, monsters from low to high class, schemes, unfair business/trading, and especially the greedy and intelligent humans. I personally hate the MC yet at the same time love. I hate some of his decisions but there are times when I am thrilled with his... more>> schemes. Betrayal and etc is common for him, but I think that he is being Psychopath. The novel has some flaws and the question of whether you'll like the novel depends if you can digest his actions especially killing and unfair trade. I somewhat hate his out of nowhere killings and unfair trade with allies. Though I can understand that he is being careful and meticulous, human psychology is different. Being allies and taking advantage of them because of the circumstances instead of having a both equal benefit relationship, I wonder how the MC will die. <<less

Starts out promising, then gets boring, then gets amazing, until about 400 where the author suddenly loses his touch.

Spoiler

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the next 200+ chapters were excruciatingly dragged out, with lots of cheap, out-of-the-blue setbacks (like the MC uncharacteristically getting distracted and his one-of-its-kind mythical Gu getting snatched away, etc) that will make you grind your teeth. Most series have plot armour but here the author throws in disasters for the sake of realism, even if they don't grow organically out of the plot and feel like BS.

For now I'd say try to endure the first 100 chapters. The story picks up after the MC gains a bit of strength in his village and finishes his year in the academy. Then the story gets better and here. But if you're like me, you'll probably start to dislike the story after 400

The MC mentions tons of stuff that'll get you excited but it'll shock you how long it takes for the story to get they're and it's all handled in a really disappointing way

Not bad. Reading this you can believe that protagonist is reincarnated 500+yo. (In some novels you can't believe. Especially when reincarnated 1000+yo doing things rashly, and you only can think that he/she just spoiled brat with wisdom on same level with 8yo.)

But what is wrong with this absurd cultivation system? Especially "feeding gu".

We don't see storage rings (at least in the beginning), and author say that petals for feeding moonlight gu whiter after 10 days. That means that cultivator of moonlight gu can't leave village for longer that 10-12... more>> days period? (If something delayed you gu will die? O_O).

Then again wine worm gu need 1/4 vial of wine per day. If cultivator goes to the mountains for purpose, he needs to take "beer truck" along. Or if cultivator moves between towns (which far from each other) and happens to brake container with wine, will wine worm gu just die? (Than how possible for cultivator of 4-5 realm to "roam continent"? With train (caravan) of different goods to feed gus?) <<less

Spoiler

In the opening act of the story we follow Feng Yuan, supposedly a peerless cultivator.
The cultivation system is based on gu (bit like pokemon) that the cultivator uses, they're stored in his inner energy container. They feed on various foods and they can be evolved.

It starts out interesting as Feng Yuan is a scheming and cruel character with a library of memories from his past life and his viciousness grows as time goes on.

He extorts, bends the rules to his own advantage and operates in such a way that he gets the maximum benefits without crossing peoples bottom lines.

However he is still human and makes mistakes and this propels the story forward.

It has this Death Note'esque element and mindgames. IT's FUN!

Post- Yue Village
Spoiler

After the first act The MC experiences a reset. (lvl3->lvl1) Super frustrating. Get used to this.
He relies on his enemy for survival, as he grasps some of his weaknesses. Altho the weakness is actually laughable if you think about it.

The story is still very good. I enjoy this bit because we get to know Bai Ning and his feelings more, we get to observe the the MC from his enemies perspective.

However the story starts showing inconsistencies.
It's basically an entire arc about Feng Yuan showing (teaching) his enemy Bai Ning, how to kill him. s*upid s*upid s*upid.

[collapse]

Post-Bai Village
Spoiler

I enjoyed the Caravan/Battle arena arc as the MC finally catches up with his previous cultivation froom 100 chapters ago, he finally goes ahead instead of backwards.

The culmination of the 2nd act of the story however is confusing as heck and makes very little sense.

The alliance between Bai and Tie Rue Nan makes no logical sense as Tie Ruo Nan knows Bai has the same amount of sins as Fang, does. Namely Slaughtering Tie Clansmen and slaughtering Bai clan and more.
The co-operation to get Feng Trapped, does not wash away any sins. It makes absolutely no sense for Tie clan to let Bai go after.

In other words Bai makes an idiotic move and that basically equates to shooting himself in the foot.

Post Imortal-gu refinement

Spoiler

So Yuan snatches a blessed land for himself, a very important one at that as it is the best for soul-stone production (gut stones).

At this point we start to see a major flaw showing up.
At first this is very cute as, he struggles to defend his land, attracts the wrath of elite sects and starts
"farming".

However we get bombarded with a tone of information. It's not tragic at this point, but that will soon change. Thankfully this piling of information stops as the blessed land gets corroded and yuan sets out to find a cure.

This turns out to be quite a journey as he goes to another continent under a disguise and takes part in a war.
Meanwhile he is developing another PATH of cultivation. This leads again to constant dumps of information as various tribes and characters get introduced over and over.

We see less creative scheming.

It feels a bit like a short Total War:Three Kingdoms Campaign.

[collapse]

Eighty Eight level

Spoiler

So the crux of this section, is the exploration of another blessed land in the pursuit of inheritances.

This quickly get's CONFUSING AS FFFFFFFFF, there's too many influences and to many complex relationships.

You see at this point every character is kinda relevant and important and they all have their own backgrounds. The problem is in the fact that we get to learn too much about those characters and the story does not progress.

On top of that there's also a lot of lore, that is being revealed at the same time as well as side-quests so to speak.

AND Top it all off, Fang Yuan get's invaded by a will that messes with his mind.

This tries to emulate "coming together" moment as in 2 previous acts, but it fails.
It's too messy and various characters are running around like headless chicken without rhyme or reason.

[collapse]

Post Collapse

Spoiler

At this point I stopped enjoying this novel.
Firstly again in similiar fashion Feng Yuan experiences ANOTHER setback, his cultivation get's frozen as hi turns into an undead.
Undead can't cultivate further.

The novel turns into info dump central and 0 progress.

The story slows down to a crawl as more and more complexity is piled on top.
At this point Feng is studying Refinement, Strength, Dream, Ens*avement, Transformation and god knows what, each requiring ingredients evolution, new characters to trade or to rob.

However to me it feels like a chore.
If I were to speak in an analogy.
It is like eating banana, eating banana to me is enjoyable, when eating appropriate size with each bite.

If I eat a piece that is too large or too small, the experience is not optimal.

The chapters are filled with crap, fragmented into more and more pieces lazy dialogs and repeated content. over and over...

The MAIN point of the story becomes about things that the MC can't do, as opposed about the things that he can do.

He can't do this, he can't do that... he can just sit and wait for other people to get him.
sad

I recommend this novel to anyone that loves reading about evil main characters and hates cliches. If you're tired of the typical self righteous MC that only boast about how he doesn't bully the weak or women, then this novel is for you. In fact I should say this now. The MC ruthless, so may it ether a women, male, or child if they get in his way he has no problem killing them. So if your not ok with him killing women etc then don't read it then. Also... more>> not everything goes his way. Theirs plot armor in the novel but then again what novel doesn't? The MC won't get every treasure or magic artifact. He often gets many setbacks that ruins his plans which he has to think and adapt to the situation. There's no harem so if you're looking for that kind of thing you won't find it here. Try Warlock Of The Magnus World/Grasping Evil if you want a evil MC with a harem. I think I actually wrote a review of this novel before, criticizing the translations. That all stops around chapter 70. All in in all this pretty much my perfect evil MC. Honestly the thing I dislike about after reading this is that it made me set a standard in my mind for evil MC's novels. It's heard to find a true evil MC so I treasure gems like this. <<less

5/5 novel. The plots here are phenomenal. Everything just clicks together at the end of every book.

But my favourite part is the characters and enemies. Reverend Insanity's characters get more cunning and smarter the higher their cultivation is unlike other novels where their IQ just stays the same regardless of cultivation. The phrase "there's no eternal enemies/allies, only eternal benefits" is the motto of everyone here. They don't care about reputation if enough benefits is placed upon them. Ofc it's not just about the present benefits, but the benefit it... more>> brings in the future as well.

The characters here also get recycled. Important characters you see in the early chapters reappear later on in the novel and doesn't just get thrown out, despite how huge the gap is compared to the MC. Every character here has a part to play. <<less

Probably my favorite webnovel so far, the quality throughout the whole story is just excellent such a shame it's currently banned so it stops at chapter 2334 but still well worth the read even in it's incomplete state.

Great story, cold blooded calculative and cool headed MC, very unique cultivation system, but hard to read.

I have read all of the chapters as of now. I have to say that the journey was very good. I am satisfied with the story, although I had to skip nearly 1/4 of the chapters.

Author keeps talking on useless side characters that are going to die/ become obsolete in 10 chapters. Or the author keeps repeating himself throughout the story, spewing useless information. It becomes boring real fast.

the cultivation system is very... more>> unique. People living in this universe need to use gu worms to manipulate dao. Even if you are a venerable (universes maximum cultivation level as of now) without gu worm you are nothing. And, you need matching gu worms according to your cultivation level. Upgrading gu worms is risky because if the refinement is a failure there is a risk of gu worm dying. And if you are not a refinement path master refining gu is about %0.1 or lower.

Aside from that people and gu worms require constant feeding. Every gu worm requires different food, finding correct food for gu worms is a hard process.

İn my opinion, Authors keeps making cultivaiton harder arbitrarily. For example, gu worms requiring food. Or, the manipulation of dao through gu worm. Like why?

gu worms are unique and to refine new gu worms you need wisdom and refinement path attainment. And sometimes non existant resources.

ı read the story because of the MC. And his achievements. But it was a hard reading for me <<less

One of the best novels I have ever read!

The MC is "evil" (and maybe that's make some reader uncomfortable with some of his act) and have solid ambition. Really recommended for people who look for new experience, MC that stay true to his character, no romance, and full of new perspectives.

P.S: The Renzu (Gu) story is also good!

People who have read it will know why I stopped here.

But it's not because the MC is evil.

It's because the author preaches to me about my hypocrisy for having normal human emotions and trying his best to disgust me. Seems like a barely disguised fetish of the author after all the pretty girls that turn into gore.

I also don't see much of a reason to continue reading, all other characters will obviously either die or be left behind by the story. The MC won't ever care about anyone but himself,... more>> and any nice relationships will seemingly only be included to be destroyed and repulse the "weak" readers.

Other than that it's a decently well written story, with an intriguing cultivation system and mostly clever characters. <<less

The story is filled with complex characters, intricate schemes, and intense action scenes that keep readers hooked. Fang Yuan is a unique protagonist who is not afraid to be ruthless and manipulative, which makes for a refreshing change from typical heroic characters. The worldbuilding is also well-done, with an intricate cultivation system and various factions that add depth to the story.

One of the standout features of "Reverend Insanity" is its focus on the philosophy of cultivation. It explores the idea of power and its corrupting influence, as well as the... more>> concept of destiny and whether one can change their fate. The story also tackles themes of betrayal, revenge, and the cost of pursuing one's ambitions.

While the series may not be suitable for all readers due to its dark themes and graphic violence, it is a well-crafted story that is sure to entertain fans of the cultivation genre. The manhua adaptation is also beautifully drawn and captures the intense action and intricate details of the story.

Overall, "Reverend Insanity" is a gripping and thought-provoking series that stands out in the crowded cultivation genre. It is highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy and complex characters. <<less

Okay! A great novel but I think there's a screw that our MC has that's loose the f*ck it is demonic way he says whatever he does is demonic way okay if that's the setting of the novel that's good but the f*ck writer reminds us of it in every chapter. I don't know what demonic way is but whatever the MC did isn't demonic that's for sure it's just selfish and it's not like I am complaining about that it's what I like about it but rather in the... more>> chapter whenever I read it rather than what MC is thinking or scheming it's more like an 8th grader saying I'm demonic it ruins the fun in the novel going against heaven and all MC feel like half hearted and chanting it like mantra to make up his own mind "if "this" is demonic than I am a demon reigning hell". Bro I got it focus on story focus on plot focus on whatever you are going to do. Let me get it over with my ranting. Now review

Story:- great 5 stars

Characters:- 4 stars (cause MC is an 8th grader)

1. Mc:- According to me is an 8th grader cause author chants "demon" "Demonic" " Demonic nature" Like mantra. Other than that quite in depth character being greedy I quite don't mind it. Schemes umm I think they are good not long term but short term. A bit of control freak but hey which MC isn't be it righteous or demonic.

Side characters: I think most of them are great.

World building:5 stars (Indepth)

Power/cultivation system: 5 stars (it's just great.)

Story telling: 3 stars

I don't like that 8th grader syndrome that MC has. Now let me say why I think it's 8th grade syndrome everything our MC does is for himself and goes against the rule of society but which MC im Chinese novels doesn't and being selfish is human nature. And being ruthless to others and himself that shows resolve of that said human.

Novel overall 4.1 stars these 4.1 stars are of course because of world building and that very well exiquted cultivation system and story. But let me tell you the story telling is horrible it's just like word fillers in evry second chapter saying it's demonic that's demonic I'm demonic F*ck demonic. Writer treats reader as a fool or I don't know what just to make MC look good but as I said he is a fu*cking 8th grader that returned from future. <<less

to be honest this novel has left me wowed and baffled although there are some boring parts I'm a sucker for when the story speeds up and weeks pass by and it's just the protagonist growing in strength which made some of those parts more bearable this novel is the best wuxia novel I have ever read I'm a bit biased to the genre I don't like the cliche bullsh*t novels like chaotic sword god that novel was horrendous although I'm not much of a fan of the MCs dark... more>> do anything and everything to achieve a goal its a bit much but the 2 endings of the first 2 novels were so good I had to keep reading this is the only novel that got me so hyped for these volume endings I love the autumn cicada and the way the author uses it to just make readers go wow although I heard there aren't any great wow moments after the first 2 endings this endings make it worth it especially the 2nd one that one was dope and the connection to the legends of Ren Zu make it even better although legends of Ren Zu is slightly redundant at certain times the way the author used it for the 2nd ending was fire. I hope the novel for me gets better as I continue reading but if anyones looking to read this just read the first 200 chapters and if you like it keep going. I hope in the later chapters the author uses more wow moments that don't rely on the autumn cicada as eventually it will get lazy and I hope he makes more wow moments that are even better then the end of the 2nd volume <<less

I'll give this 4.5 stars: it's a very good novel. It does however get a little repetitive sometimes, the side characters sometimes are a little forgotten/underdeveloped.

Reverend Insanity starts out as the common reborn protagonist, trying to make use of their future knowledge to go further ahead. Plot twist: the MC is extremely calculative, and his actions are ONLY based on his gains. This, in itself, is a very refreshing twist from other light novels. The author actually makes a point that the MC is not good nor bad, but in... more>> the world of the powerful, everything is about gains and losses, including other people besides the MC.

The cultivation system: it is a mix of the usual "gets more powerful within tier, advances and breaks into another power-level tier" and "Gu". Now, the beauty of this Gu cultivation is that it starts very simple and concrete, and, over time, starts getting close to "Dao" (or "to comprehend the world"). Quite an interesting twist on the usual "I'm lacking cultivation comprehension to go from martial-saint level to martial-immortal level, lets sit here and comprehend the world until I can break through and forget about this". What the author also adds in between the machinations of the MC (and simply wins me over) are the chapters on "The Legends of Ren Zu". On those chapters he goes on about this supposed mythical story, and it gives a lot of flavor to the novel and backstory to the world.

Overall a very good read! <<less

What I love about this story is the way the plot progresses. This is a rare case of the world affects the MC while the MC affects the world. In later chapters, it is revealed that a major proportion of the plot is the result of other characters in the background. And some say it invalidates the success of the MC but I think on the contrary it validates certain aspects of what the MC was able to achieve. For example in a certain arc around chapter 600 when he... more>> could have used his trump card but decided not to.

All in all, Fang Yuan is trying to achieve his main goal, and will not be opposed to doing anything if he finds that it increases his chances to succeed. He is not evil for evil's sake, and he is not good for goodness sake.

I find the morality of the characters is largely influenced by the world they live in. Although the author would like you to believe otherwise, the world these Gu Masters live in is vastly different from ours, with very limited resources and which are very hard to acquire in certain aspects, which naturally leads to competition and the hypocrisy of the righteous path.

Even then its sometimes dealt in a good way. In general most righteous path people understand that most people in the demonic path aren't 'demonic' for the sake of mu*dering and bloodshed, rather due to circumstance. That is why they are sometimes willing to compromise.

Well, overall the story feels fluid, and the author seems to have thought about the plot, not just pulling bullsh*t out his ass, like most light novel authors do. <<less

One of the best novel I have read. To understand this novel everyone should first understand MC or should know how MC became demon cultivator in his past life. (Here demon cultivator is not referring to actual demon but to a person who is selfish, who doesn't follow rules of the organisation.)

These organisations are called righteous faction (there are demon faction also who kills humans for resources but most of them hides this point and try to be righteous on top) even when they are scheming. But as long... more>> as they follow rules and regulation in the open but break them in the dark they are righteous faction.

Second we should know this is survival of fittest world, unlike other wuxia/xianxia where strong is respected, here it is different. Mortals are considered ants and can be killed without any hesitation, clan wont punish you. Actually its very difficult to explain the world building of this novel in few sentences but please know its different. There are rules, schemes, survival of fittest etc., This applies to all not only to MC, to everyone in this novel from a mortal to clan leader.

If you people like TTNH or I am Supreme then you will like this novel because of MC's wits and acting.

There are so many thing I want to say but I am lazy to type, but know this unlike other novels you people will be on the edge with fear, anxiety because you people will be asking whether the MC will kill this person or spare him/her. If there are new encounter and the person is innocent you people will always fear what will MC do to them in future.

In this novel there are no young master going around picking fight with MC, they should just prey that MC doesn't go after them.

But whenever MC is killing someone know this everyone (MC/ other person / his faction) as their plots and schemes for MC so to move forward MC kills them. If the person is not scheming or plotting on MC then MC won't kill them. <<less

This novel is pretty good. Overall its a good read but the arcs became too tiresome for me at 3rd arc (when he went to another continent). Just got ready bored. This novel upto that point really is about just cultivation and improving himself, no absurdly strong mortal enemies, no romance, just plain cultivation to the top. If you are into it read this one.

i used to think that these type of novels are more like reality in a cultivation and would reallly like to read these types, but I... more>> guess this is one for me that should have stayed as a dream. <<less
