Characterization? Flat cliché cardboard. No, even worse, people lose all reason and behave extremely impulsive, emotional and with a total lack of restraint. A common theme among this sort of novels, e.g. Bringing The Nation's Husband Home, Perfect Secret Love, and so on. The main character is an innocent fairy, she's naive so her eyes bulge all the time from being surprised. Flat as a f*cking pancake.

Plot? We start with an aphrodisiac ploy right off the bat. It's not that there's no interesting elements. The female lead is getting courted... more>> by someone that is not the male lead and he seems to be (very) slowly succeeding. Interesting... but I don't trust the author to not make that someone a cheating scumbag somehow. Who knows, maybe we'll get a surprise? It happens sometimes!

Prose? Who am I kidding, prose in a webnovel? No seriously, some do have prose, are beautifully written. But not this one, I can assure you. It's run-of-the-mill writing.

I'm still reading it though. Cheap and easy crack. Says more about me than it does about the novel though, unfortunately for me. <<less

I was hooked onto the story despite many cliches. But then came Chapter 132 -

Xin Xinggao was in Team India's uniform and was chatting happily with an Indian man. Zhao Quan followed Gu Nianzhi's gaze to them and said quietly, "That's her boyfriend."

"Hmph!" Gu Nianzhi snorted disdainfully. "Let her reek of curry for the rest of her life!"

What kind of statement is this?! Being an Indian myself, this is very offensive.

Pretty racist overtones in this novel. I've read a ton of novels so far and I've seen all sorts of negative stereotypes such as body shaming, tendencies to whitewash, classism, sexism, etc. But this is the first novel where I've seen different nationalities looked down on. Direct quote from novel (said by FL) :

"“Hmph!” Gu Nianzhi snorted disdainfully. “Let her reek of curry for the rest of her life!”"

I found that pretty disgusting and created an account solely to raise some awareness about the total garbage this novel... more>> is. I kept on reading past that point because I was hoping the novel would do a call-back and maybe show some improvements in the FL character but frankly she's pretty garbage.

Someone already talked about how she's frequently described as someone with wide eyes and good looks. Her value basically starts and stops there. Flat pancakes is an overstatement. It starts of with non-consensual s*x (as a lot of novels do tbh) and goes on from there to try and showcase how great and smart the FL is, how cool and suave the ML is, how far reaching this "Huaxia Empire" is, etc. All of which I could live with which speaks more to my taste than anything else, but it quickly goes downhill with the racism prevalent. Any other female who even deigns to talk to the FL or oppose her in anyway is obviously scheming to get one of her men and is quickly destroyed in the name of nationalism or whatever other reason the ML or FL can come up with. Women are either her big sisters or being destroyed by her basically. Please spare THE WORLD (and me) your one-dimensional rendition of women! *barfs*

If you're looking for action with strong FLs, go check out Rebirth of the Strongest Empress, My Master Disconnected Yet Again or Quick Transmigration Cannon Fodder's Record of Counterattacks. The last one in particular has pretty nationalist sentiments for those who enjoy that but is still wayy better than this garbage of a novel. <<less

Story: 5/5, translation: 4/5

I am surprised to find that the plot is fast paced and action packed right off the bat. Veteran readers of e-novels will know that many qidian authors love to drag out key story arcs excessively with mindless dialogue-padded scenes to increase their word count, such isn't the case for this story. The writing is super solid and the plot pacing is very good too! Please read this addictive story!

I'll try my hand at summarising the premise and keep it spoiler free:

ML is a high... more>> rank military man, he holds the position of General Major of the Empire's 6th division. 6 years ago, he was assigned to young, orphaned and amnesiac FL, and had taken on the role of her legal Guardian before she comes of age. FL's past and family background is a mystery that the government wants to unravel.

I highly recommend this story for ppl who likes their romance sweet and steamy ?with a huge dash of blockbuster style action and political intrigue. Forget about low level face-smacking w a bunch of sheltered white lotuses, I'm talking about civil unrest, compromised state cybersecurity, cross border missions, lawsuits, etc. Core characters are all high society, influential elites and professionals with brains and/or money.

It's a very complex and well written plot. Every arc is new and refreshing, it will leave you on the edge to find out what happens next.

The story concluded after 2263 chapters, it's pretty much a given that their romance is a slow burn. But I promise when the time comes... you'll explode.

The older, taciturn and self proclaimed war-machine ML insists the naive but intelligent FL address him as Uncle. Outwardly, he treats her as a mission he has to fulfil and keeps a distance from her, employing his trusted men to safeguard/ care for her while monitoring closely from afar. Lonely FL is dependent on ML for emotional/familia support but doesn't realise her romantic notion for him right away as she is young and inexperienced in matters of love.

WARNING: There's a controversial and medically questionable scene at the very beginning, where FL was poisoned with a lethal drug that had aphrodisiac side effects and the only relieve was to have s*xual interc**rse. The ML being the best and safest option did the indecent deed unwillingly whilst the FL is unconscious. I can see why many is turned off by this. Personally, I feel that the scene did contribute greatly and set the tone for the overarching story. For us readers, It revealed a layer of the disciplined and inexpressive ML that would have otherwise been left hidden and untouched forever. Perhaps that unpleasant incident was the catalyst/ turning point for the ML.

If you're ok with the above, IMO try and read till the FL's USA internship arc to decide if you like it or not, as things are a lot more exciting from that point on. From chapter 186 onwards, is where the main MCs' romance picks up and it's also the start of one of my fav arc. Yay

Edit: In the end, I directly downloaded the Qidian app. I'm listening to the book with the preset audio function. Its my first audio book (听书) experience and its so relaxing.

The author is v witty and has a way with words, her eloquent descriptions are so emotive!

Honestly the large amount of chapters are a little daunting but I must say, I'm really amazed by the author... she updates twice daily for 3 years. How is she able to concoct such a complicated and well thought out plot that is equally entertaining? She is an idea bank and writing machine. As I'm only 20% into the story I just hope it doesn't get too draggy and messy further along. <<less

tl;dr: Author can only make main character stand out as smart by making everyone else completely s*upid.

Mary Sue is usually a 'perfect' character - no matter what you can do, she'll do it BETTER. But what if an author ALSO wants her to be a 'cute, innocent little uni student, who sometimes makes mistakes and needs to be protected by prince charming'? Well, if the author does it poorly, you get this novel.

There is a good example from around where I got fed up and dropped (150-ish?). A team of... more>> best lawyers, a really elite, cream of the crop team, didn't (possibly couldn't) check if their client is a legal adult or a minor. And she felt entitled to call them and their proposals 'tr*sh', for that reason. The author could not decide between 'best in the world' and 'utterly incapable' lawyers, so decided to go with both. I was neither impressed nor amused by how she felt way superior than those poor doormat characters, just because she knew her own age.

Basically, if you expect engaging battles of wits from this law student, don't bother. The author is not smart enough to write that. <<less

Hello author, I really like your story but you are seriously biased towards other countries and treat them like idiots.

I mean your knowledge of India is atleast 30 years backwards, since you are writing so much about law you should also know that putting forward false information is also slander.

Which country messes up guard of honour. Please do not slander other countries based on your misconceptions. If you writing stories on other countries then research properly.

In 5 star restaurants how can there be just one platter of food, this was... more>> not even true 30 years ago what more is now. So please if you like food of your country that is good, but don't throw hate to other countries food, everyone like their own.

And if you want to write so much, do not use country names it becomes really unpleasant with time. If your country is so capable and the rest are tr*sh then why don't you just descend to heaven.

I mean in India it is alright if you wanna say something but atleast research first. The clothes you described are traditional wear which is hardly worn in new delhi or even through out the country on normal days. Mostly only on special occasions do we wear traditional clothes. Even if they wear their is nothing wrong with it.

The power cut in hospitals of metropolitan cities have not happened in last 15 years.

How can even hospitals smell of curry do they cook food over there are you alright in your head.

And if you don't know about the technological advancements of India then please search first their is no need for this much poison.

Do not discredit each and every indian woman in a powerful position by saying that they are mainly there for the sake of satisfying western feminism.

Every country is lacking but that doesn't give you the right to provide wrong information and if you do so then please be brutally honest and do tell about you own country as well. <<less

I've read to ch 657, then skipped to 711 before trying again and made it to 728...

Several ongoing irritating male characters, like a itch you can't scratch, placed in prominent roles, they wear on my hope that they improve their characters, get humbled or kicked to the curb. (at least to 728 that is not the case)

My deal breakers are contained in the spoilers:... more>>
Spoiler

I had my irritations earlier on, but they didn't quite pass my threshold until another cookie cutter character was introduced. (hence my skipping to 711 to escape "Als" arc)

But the final straw is "Chapter 728 - Marry Me".
I've read my fair share of Chinese novels with arranged marriages, but here we have the FL trying to break up with the ML.. he proceeds to literally forcefully marry her through physical force and has his subordinates be the witnesses and even tickles her to get a smile for the wedding photo!

I consider his action to be a violation of her physical, and psychological will.
And he is supposed to love her!? He does what he wants, never listens to her desires. And it seems almost every decision she makes, whether it be important or mundane, gets overridden by his will.

Can she buy a house by herself? Nope
Can she buy a scarf of her choice without input? Nope
Can she go to a restaurant of her choice? Nope
Can she discharge herself from a hospital without the ML or a Rival character's permission? Nope

During her attempts to break up she moves home, he insists on preparing security for her, she accepts but asks not to be spied on... so he sets up cameras all around her house instead of inside it without her knowledge... stalker/voyeur much?

(oh and don't forget the creepy lawyer/Professor "He Zhichu" that sticks to her)

I started reading this novel because of the genre; it's quite different from the rest of the novel I read from WN (Hidden Marriage, Genius Doctor, yada yada). At first I was just curious about the development between GNZ and HSH after they goes to the capital, so I start MTL-ing.

And damn I'm hooked.

The story and characters are all great. The development of the plot is sometimes unexpected but not unpleasant. And by the end of the story my heart hurts for HZC..

The love story between MC and ML is... more>> quite good. At first you may think that the MC is too childish and dependant to the ML, and the ML is too much of a wood in their 'love' relationship. But believe me, they learned, later. Through many challenges and hardships, they'll learn slowly.

The MC learned how to be independent, how to stand her ground, and how to love herself before giving her all for the MC blindly.

The ML learned (the hard way) on how to appreciate and love the MC.

I love this story. This is the first story I finish MTL-ing. <<less

I am writing this review as there is none so far. Story is still in its infancy. FL background is mysterious and we only know ML is a major general. The characters are not explored deeply yet. But we can expect more based on the hints. MC is likeable, cute, bold but sometimes timid due to her amnesia, not cowardly, cautious. Both MC still haven't realised their affection for each other. An incident triggers ML affection towards her. Bcoz they have an age gap of 10 and he met her... more>> when she is only 12. So he is refusing to let any romantic thoughts in the slightest while FL is worshipping him and consider him to be her only safe haven and thus fail to notice that only when she is talking with him, she is most happy.

Story is paced slowly but interestingly. Author is using the clichés and turning them into unexpected events. Story is very interesting so far. If the story progress in this similar fashion, it will be one of my favourites. <<less

The premise of the story is intriguing, but there are a lot of aspects of the characterization, world building, and stereotyping that is on the uncomfortable side.

It's a very xenophobic plot. All the villains are portrayed as mostly of foreign descent. And even when the foreign characters aren't the villains, the stereotypical behavior is uncomfortably disturbing. There's a lot of language that criticises or stereotypes foreigners.

So why did I bother reading to the finish? Because I do like some aspects of the plot. Or possibly, some aspects bother me too... more>> much, so it made me want to complete it to the end.

The FL is the categorical character with heroine FL halo. All women who meet or see her will automatically hate, envy, or attack her. With just a random few characters that give an occasional glimpse that she can have a normal female relationship. As for the men, all men are hot after her, and of course the ones that pursue her must be hot looking and all around almost perfect. The ML is a super secret top military agent & hacker; her in*estous half-brother is a hot military leader, lawyer, & hacker; the top German spy is also a hot all rounder chasing after her heels, and there are a couple of other "hot characters" that surround the FL. Basically, with the heroine halo, the FL can do no wrong, and everyone will love her.

One of the main issues I have with the FL, is her ambiguous relationship or behavior with others despite her rabid jealousy of other females around the ML. In particular, her relationship with her half-brother is just downright disturbing. No matter what, if a man half strangles you in abrupt anger because you don't remember him, you should steer clear of him. However, she conveniently ignores it and treats him like normal. Even when he keeps pampering and chasing her, she doesn't quite reject him cleanly. In this way, I feel like she always feels entitled to being spoiled by whoever. If not for this ambiguous behavior, she would have been a more likeable character.

As for the lawyer aspects, while the court cases are interesting, and the method she uses to solve them are also interesting. Her mouthy sarcasm and snarky comments during court sessions are downright childish. It's truly both annoying and unprofessional.

The whole parallel universe is a bit new, but seemed kind of unnecessary. The majority of the story mostly circled around others trapping the FL and trying to kill her, while the FL tries to outsmart everyone.

The story starts out like most Chinese romances where the FL is infected with some dangerous aphrodisiac, and must do the deed or she'll die. As the story progresses, I did like the way the FL grew up and how she innocently pursues her childhood idol, the ML.

Overall, most of the plots were interesting enough to complete. It's just some of the details about the xenophobic characterization bothered me. As well as the side character half-brother that kept obsessing over her began to irritate me to no end. If there was character I wished that didn't exist the most, it was that character. He was such a jerk, and I don't understand why anyone would like him. Nor did I understand why the author insisted he take up so much of the story and even to the extent of giving him an afterward. <<less

The Americans (aka me) being slapped in the face after already being upset that this novel keeps insulting the U.S as well as many other countries with the line:

"Americans were all like that, you had to argue the point to death. They assume you are afraid of them and ignore you if you're cordial. It would be alright as long as you didn't raise a ruckus."

I sure hope I'm not like that. I haven't read much other racism towards any country except Russia I think, which is funny because China... more>> and Russia I thought were allies. Maybe I'm wrong, idk. I haven't made it very far though and by reading what the other reviews are talking about (especially about insulting India), I can't say much. I haven't been there, which is probably true for the Author of this story too, so she/he has no right to bash it either. And even if you actually had knowledge about India you shouldn't bash them down, they're probably doing just alright without your racism and the whole 'bring myself up by putting others down' crap. Damn, if it weren't for the fact that this novel is different from most I've read in terms of plot I'd long be gone. And one more thing, Gu Nianzi or whatever her name is is 17 at the beginning, but she's already going to a University...!? I'm kind of confused if anyone can help me out a little <<less

Great book! So good that I eventually gave in and started reading the machine translation because I couldn’t wait to read the rest. Very different plot. Lots of intense arcs. Love the super smart, capable MC who grows from young and overly dominated by the ML to being a strong woman I her own right. There is some science fiction aspects mixed in with the romance but I enjoyed that too.

So far, I'm liking the story, but I'm still in the early part of the novel. The characters are okay, particularly the military subordinates of the ML... I think although the FL is almost 18, she still acts like a 14 or 15 year old in some aspects. She acts rashly for someone who's supposed to be extremely intelligent. If she doesn't get attention she has a tanny fit... Her guardian is in some secret military force and if she can't get a hold of him after being told she... more>> doesn't have security clearance, she goes on a hunger strike... ohhhh please grow up... But as I said earlier, I'm only in the early stages of the novel... I'm hoping she'll get better... <<less

When I first read this novel I thought I'm too bias since I read lots of similar novel like this.

Plot start with similar cliché FL got aphrodisiac and ML is there to save the day.. But the more you read it the more you would get annoyed by this novel. Author portray FL to be the most top in everything.. FL got good looks, she got brains, she is brave, she is innocent, she got the man that everyone droll over.. And she also got top PTSD. No one can... more>> claim No. 1 if FL is no 2.

but all of this thing got recycle.. Too much dragging, and the FL is TOO innocent. She already have ML love but still okay to be close with 2 other guy who like her. Even if the author make it beautifully look like she is "unwilling" to follow them.. She still did.

And Her oh so called Innocent trait get her in to trap. Even though 3 chapter showed to her that her enemies going to do something to her, she still "Innocently" followed them and cry out loud AGAIN just to be save by ML or 2nd guy.

but if any of y'all like this kind of Mary sue novel.. You may proceed to read it. <<less

This is the story I think of when I try to explain to people that Chinese webnovels have propaganda in them.

I'm not surprised when Chinese novels dislike certain countries, and allude to things that happened in history, because I know people IRL who are still very upset about things like that. But this is the first story I've read that laid it out so openly and so crazily. They name other countries directly, have whole conspiracies about WWII, and of course China is always the pitiful one acting in self... more>> defense.

The part that boggled my mind the most was when they straight up said "that country was jealous of our superior genetics" like WHAT THE HELL? There's nationalism, and then there's straight up blood superiority and eugenics. I get that it's important to the plot setup, but I can't imagine saying that my race is genetically superior to the rest of the world with a straight face. The conspiracy victim complex was just the cherry on top to gross me out.

Also not sold on the romance aspect. It always felt to me like the FL was still childishly infatuated with the ML, who accepted her because she's hot and useful. The final straw for me was when the love rival finally challenged the ML, and this guy couldn't justify why the FL should stay with him. If he had said he loved her the most or knows her the best, I would have at least been able to give him something but he just stood there all silently angry that someone dared to challenge him.

2/5 because I can at least say that it's an interesting read and the plot is complex and clearly thought out. <<less

Honestly, I think this is the BEST chinese novel i've read so far. All of the part in this story are relevant, there's no dragging feeling, and the author is SUPERSMART! Gosh, this novel is a serious work! I believe there's a lot of research needed for making this serial, it just fantastic! You got action, sci-fi, drama, and sweet sweet romance. It's like a complete package.

There's no shallow drama with in-laws or other women/men. Every subplot is believable and necessary. The chemistry and progress between the CP is just... more>> right, and what most important is, you can see how their relationship evolve and grow.

I strongly recommend this novel, and the MTL is quite good, too! <<less

First off if you want to get to the good part of the novel you have to ignore the racism, the cliche 'MC hurt with aphrodisiac and the ML saves by sleeping with her', the fact that she was underage with he slept with her, and the Chinese nationism.

With that said this novel has a very well planned and logical (if you consider the rules of their world) plot. There are many plot twists and interesting plot points. The MC accumulates power in a reasonable way, has suitable golden fingers... more>> (not too many) for the plot setting, and suffers many setbacks, a few are pretty major. Overall I really enjoy the plot even though it can be a little overwhelming sometimes. The MC and ML's relationship is full of ups and downs; they meet setbacks and grow emotionally together. The MC is a bit of a Mary Sue and the ML is also pretty Gary Sue-like.

Taking this all into account I would rate the novel right in the middle of the scale with a 2.5/5. The main reason comes from the problematic stuff I mentioned in the beginning. I still rounded up since at the time that I read it, it was fairly enjoyable. <<less
