Damn.. Just.. What a ride. The manwha was extraordinarily well done, which emboldened my transition into reading the novel. I think the most apt description I can attach to this story is, it feels like a western work, in the good sense of course. The characters are varied and plentiful, the motives are clear, and the MC feels like a character driven by the story just as much as he is ironically trying to drive the story as a returnee, which is an interesting dynamic in and of itself. I... more>> felt like the romance could've been done a bit better, but generally I don't really care for that aspect of a story. The mystery and reveal were pretty nicely executed. And this is all tied together by a marvellous job on translation by mald frogs. Deffo recommend this if you're looking for a competent and human MC, interesting cast of characters who are compelling, and a very subtle endgame. Its always bittersweet when you finish a story. But I feel like I'll remember this for more time to come. <<less

One of the best novels I have read.

Unlike a huge majority of japanese isekai that does nothing with the noble-commoner narrative this novel was able to flesh it out and the MC was able to bridge the gap and lessen the hate ater years of effort.

The villains are all interconnected to the point you're questioning who's behind all of it.

The more you read the more it builds up and the better it gets there are no boring chapters and its amazing. You dont need to wait 100+ chapters for things... more>> to start going. <<less

Only one word : Amazing

This was the second novel in my life that I simply couldn't stop reading. I blitzed through it completely in just 3 days.

One thing that I liked the most about this novel that unlike most other 'Returner' novels, in this novel there were actually drastic changes as the protagonist gradually changed the past and his future knowledge was rendered quite meaningless after a while and he had to struggle through everything first-hand.

The twists were incredible. Had a wholesome reading experience overall. Romance was also quite satisfactory.... more>> (I am a bit of a sucker for romance.)

Have a good read !! <<less

All in all its a pretty decent Story. But I dont really like how the shadow worlds have Played out so far. There is very little fighting and a lot of history/politics/side quests stuff.

MC also said right at the beginning that He was only 3rd circle because He was discriminated against. Then He Returns to the past gets back the Power He had before He died almost immediately Helps other people break through to 4th circle an gets Dozens of backers and still cant improve a single bit Himself?

Well, it's an okay story I guess. There is no obvious flaws but it's not really amazing either. The plot is quite predictable. I would evaluate it as above average.

RMSBS contains numerous cliche & convenient moments and is quite plain when the story is idle; that, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's terrible.

If someone judges RMSBS solely off those flaws, they haven't actually read it. Whilst reading, one should focus on the novel's control over tension and its characterisation, which are critical aspects in every book. Every character is portrayed beautifully, and each situation is more profound than what is seen.

What's there to say but Great! Satisfying! Amazing and Blood Boiling especially the fight scene more like adventure scene. If I were to say something else though what I can say is that the novel is better than the manhwa... Also the story of using past events (history) in clearing dungeons is romantic and puts the history of the world to the readers mind of whats it's like from the past. It also introduces the major forces that lead to the changes in the world and desir with his... more>> future knowledge is not all knowing after all "a flap of a butterfly can create a storm" it can be seen that some loop holes are present now that he is deviating from the previous future that he was part of and it may be good or bad..

Definitely A Must Read... <<less

I just finished reading it and I hope this review helps you decide whether to give the WN a chance or not :P

-
1. Story ★★ - The world-build is interesting, the way the MC moves to solve problems according to his own limitations and intelligent use of the tools at his disposal is fantastic, but the problem is the PLOT and the characters in the chapter 275+ there was no need for there to be another PLOT practically in the last volume of WN, whenever this kind of thing happens, a voice comes into my head "this is going to be shit", and when it happens I'm usually right XD and it was no different in this WN, in relation to the characters....
-
2. Character ★★★ - The characters in general are pretty OK, don't expect outstanding character development, it's weak in that department, in addition to the character clichés used. What makes me a little sad is that the MC created his group and you only see about 3 characters besides the group's initial quartet participating in missions. You even gain additional information about certain characters practically at the end of the work, which is practically irrelevant to the character as it will have no influence on whether the MC knows it or not.
-
3. Enjoyment ★★★ - I was really enjoying reading it, but when it got to the chp. 275+ forward, I was totally unmotivated by the story and the way the author re-used the PLOT that he had JUST used just to generate more conflict in the story, honestly? No need to have done that, it could have ended all loose ends and power developments at that point in the story, the infamous "Labyrinth of Shadows" could have occurred and given this power development to the characters or killed character X or Y, but what unfolded for me was a tragedy.
-
4. General ★★☆ & 5/10 - What motivated me to give this rating was the PLOT of the last volume, which made me completely lose interest in the story, it is practically a Copy & Paste of the previous PLOT, even the MC confronts the character in question saying "BUT YOU ARE DOING THE SAME THING AS CHARACTER X, HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM HIM?" and the character saying that it is different and blahblah, since in essence they are the same thing, in terms of Romance it is another meh detail in the story the TAGs say "Late Romance", but it is TOO LATE the romance practically in the last chapter that this is, not that I picked up to read WN expecting to have it, but, if I'm going to do it, at least it gives a little more "content" for it to happen.

The main character is supposed to be a scarred veteran that has watched thousands of comrades die, and yet he still basically acts like a high schooler. The nobles seem incredibly shallow, absolutely despising commoners with the given reason making barely any sense. If you can get past that kind of stuff you might enjoy it, but it just doesn't work for me.

Umm, I'll just say that I enjoy it. I haven't tried to read till the end of story. The manhwa made me postponed that idea. Because there's a little different story. Little by little, gradually changing the story. Probably they'll change how it ends, I suppose. The graphic is a bit unique, by speaking of realism style. And it makes more alluring. The graphic and story, I got both.

This is pretty much just a personal bookmark but I'll also comment on the story. The story overall was interesting with a smart and calculating MC. So if your interested then read it I personally read it on wuxia. Blog but there could be better websites.

I have never ranted about the novel's story before, but this one took it. I'm utterly disappointed at how the story goes. There is no need for so much hype-building for some disappointing face-slap scenes in every fight while dividing the scenes of every battles like how Bleach did. This is worse than chinese webnovels' face-slap moments.

I don't know - moving from anxiousness to triumph to despair to new hope and carrying "the weight of 150m people" but then acting like a shy teenager in school again just doesn't convince me. Where is the PTSD, the nightmare, the blood and sweat, the tears? Instead the MC has the time to be nonchalant about everything, flirt and tease some girls and actually doing nothing but acting cool..

Just the first interaction with the noble in the hall should have either made the noble shudder in fear from the... more>> savageness in the MCs eye, as the MC has fought in despairing wars for a long time or ended with the MC utterly disregarding the noble (as he is but a tiny ant, not important for the fate of the world). Instead the MC is wandering around and wondering about minor things.

I think the attributes I would give this novel are "lacking, childish and without depth". I still give it 3* as I read the manga and didn't find it as bad, but the novel just doesn't convince me. <<less

This is a superbly written novel with a manwha and anime adaptation. I am reviewing the translated novel as I don't believe the manwha and anime really do it justice, but the English translation itself is also amazing with accurate grammar and descriptive phrases that give it a very "polished" feel. I had read the first 100 chapters of the manwha a few years ago and recently binged all 300+ chapters of the novel over 1 week.

STORY: 9/10. Overall a well-paced story with almost all major plot points explained and... more>> tied up neatly by the end, with some great plot twists. The only thing that is not explicitly explained is exactly how the main character travels back in time in the first place, although all the story devices that could explain the time travel are introduced within the last 20 chapters so you could almost come up with a complete theory yourself. Overall the world building and ending are both excellent in my opinion.

MAIN CHARACTER: 8/10. Decent likeable main character without too much complexity. Desir is "over-powered" due to his genius intelligence and experience in his past life and wins most of his battles through strategic planning and wit rather than raw willpower and simply "powering up".

CHARACTERS: 8/10. Characters are mostly well written and fleshed out with some back story and tend to have recurring roles throughout the entire book. There are very few "filler" characters who are introduced in each new chapter and killed off quickly for a cheap thrill, which is a refreshing thing in webnovels. Many characters have a decent arc and ultimate resolution, including the villains. <<less

This kind of reincarnation story has been used quite a lot of times but this novel didn't manage to make it work.

Desir is a battle hardened MC who had been battling in a Shadow World for almost 10 years. He has seen millions of people die in battle but he becomes a na

ve idiot as soon as he reincarnates. He does some foolish things - like telling people things which no one could possibly know and no one inquires about his (a student's) intelligence source which is better than a... more>> whole nations'. He also very subtle mentions his trauma to his friends and they don't want to know or help with his trauma. MC feels disgusted to tell a lie which would be beneficial to all of his plans even though it would hurt no one but his enemies.

Our MC also keeps trying to make up and complete side quests even though that's not his main goal. Okay, even if he wants to do other things to further increase his likelihood of completing his main quest he just keeps adding on to things and dragging his party around. They just go with whatever the MC has planned for them (pretty boring). MC didn't act like how one would expect someone who has been in a kill-or-be-killed for 10years.

The side characters are nothing special. Most of the time they are just there to act as a measuring scale of how much more smart or strong MC is, and other times they are there to give the MC whatever he wants. <<less

If you want an acceptable genius protagonist. Then this is the pick for you. The protagonist truly feels very mature as expected from his backstory and the author keeps it this way throughout the novel. Every character has been given a perfect amount of backstory neither long nor short. The novel always keeps you engaged and no repeated plots nor easily guessable plots.

A true enjoyment of the logical fantasy world.
