A poor and ordinary boy from a village joins a minor sect in Jiang Hu and becomes an Unofficial Disciple by chance. How will Han Li, a commoner by birth, establish a foothold for himself in his sect? With his mediocre aptitude, how will he successfully traverse the path of cultivation and become an immortal?

This is a story of an ordinary mortal who, against all odds, clashes with devilish demons and the ancient celestials in order to find his own path to immortality.

Just read it, at first I came looking at the comments and it’s kind of half and half so I just had to write this, don’t trust what others says to you, how can you judge a novel 2000 chapters long by just not liking what happened on one chapter and when I look at these bad comments, some of them were so false that I had to scroll up to see if they were talking about a different novel, this is for that one person saying MC is s*upid... more>> and says that he will not do anything unless he gain benefits or the other person saying the MC is doing everything for the sect, this is what I will tell you, do you not know the MC, he will flee at the first sign of something he can’t deal with, but will help because he has the power to and he is a part of the sect.

and for those concerned about harem, don’t worry because he only had one wife, and will not come collecting every beautiful girl he sees. His wife is not even described has a peerless beauty.

a little something for those that want the same MC for every novel.

IT’S ABOUT A MORTALS JOURNEY, the MC is this and will always be this, if you are an actual novel reader you should f*cking know that every MC is different and comparing them will only ruin the story you are reading because if you know the MC you know what he will do but 300 chapters later you say he is so bland not shameless like MC from this novel or that novel, him being him is good. <<less

At chapter 895 I gave this novel 3 stars, now I regget it to no avail because it does not seem to be changed : (

My new rate is 5 stars.

I am now at chapter 2139 and this novel has become one of my favorites, out of hundreds of cultivation novels I have read so far.

The story and plot keep better and better, especially after he ascends. Han li is probably the most likable, neutral MC out there. He is not hypocritical like 95% of the other MCs and has... more>> his own features.

Do not give a sh*t about those reviews saying han li is blunt, they probably want MCs that go around provoking and then face slapping everyone around them. Or MCs that have ridiculous mottos like "I will screw the heavens" or "what I want the heavens will not lack" or "I will change heavens" etc.

TLDR, if you are sick of arrogant young masters, harems, MCs that think with their c*otch, constant faceslapping, provoking everyone for some s*upid reason, constant rinse and repeat plot, MCs that come from the lowest realm's lowest planet's weakest country's weakest sect's etc. And all the other cliches that make you cringe, then this novel is for you. <<less

The story is very comprehensive. It feels like the characters control the story and not the other way around. I really enjoyed the amount of details it presented and found the MC really likeable. His growth is clear to see, and his adventures helps me picture an entire world and leave me with greater desire to fill in more details. Must read!

So far as others have stated the MC is very ordinary, which I feel fits the title well. If I were to put the MC in another xianxia story, he would be the character that you would overlook. He does not have some special aid to move him through cultivation.

This is the story of the common person and not a chosen, a good read.

Edit: Drop to 2 stars. Lost cultivation again??? And in a extremely moronic way. Aaaaaand new world to start exploring all over again. And there is a set up for a even higher realm. I'm considering dropping this one.

This novel is worth reading. Let me agree at the start that the MC is kind of bland- but that is the premice. He is a mortal without backing, learning things on his own trying to survive and reach new heights with his terrible aptitude. So its kind of logical that he... more>> would be laying low, cultivating bitterly by himself for prolonged time. If that is not your thing then so be it. The main advantage the MC has is his brain. He can read the people and situations and plan ahead.

A few positives I would like to point out- there is no miraculous backing behind the MC and no heavenly expert has ever appeared when he is about to die. There is no overflow of heavenly defying items being "discovered"every few chapters. There is this emphasis every once in a while that shows the passing of time for regular mortals and how people which the MC used to know are now gone. Its not in a corny way, it just illistrates the journey of the MC and how lonely that path can be. The MC isn't some genius, even his appearance is average, there are no moments of "millions of people"gazing at his awesomness, while he is advancing a stage in cultivation, or doing battle, there have been no tournament arcs so far. There is no bloated chapters and repetitions that are there just for the sake of word count. The author does his best to provide an accurate and vivid record of this cultivators life. So I would say the name is freatly fitting the novel. <<less

I've wanted for a while now find a xianxia story with a main character who isn't 'talented' or has some sort of super-fate, or gets too damn many convenient discoveries or treasures, and this story fits the bill, with only a couple of serendipitous circumstances allowing the MC to surpass his limitation.

Too bad the story attached to it is also mediocre. Our protagonist, Han Li, is the amoral sociopathic type, the kind that doesn't care when horrible things happen but doesn't necessarily go and do them willy-nilly in case there... more>> are consequences, and at least he's not a rapist, but at the same time he's boring.

All the side-characters who are more interesting than him disappear from the page sooner or later. It's a story about a man who rides into town, gets forced to do some Maybe Good Thing, rides out into the sunset and you don't care, because the man on the horse is a boring dick. As are the other characters, too, but they are at least novel dicks, with something interesting going on.

The world is a pretty low-level one, with Han Li starting out in the 'secular' world, with a more wuxia martial arts flavor than xianxia, but things quickly escalate to magic dudes fighting magic battles. Otherwise it's your typical amoral dog-eat-dog, sect-eat-sect thing, with low-powered disciples thrown into deadly meat grinders and no one giving a shit.

The prose becomes readable, though the author has a lot telling instead of showing, and a LOT of expositionary dialogue. They also use a lot of mental dialogue to explain things, which becomes confusing when you can't tell whether the MC is muttering to themselves like a crazy person or what. The translations are perfectly fine.

========

Later:

Caught up with this again, and it gets better about some of the things. Thing is that Han Li is still pretty bland, and comes off mainly as a vaguely ok sociopath. But I kept on reading it, and even using MTL-translations to see into the future, so it's readable. <<less

A fairly run-of-the-mill xianxia that has little emphasize on any actual Taoism or Buddhism and the like. The character Han Li has a very basic personality and gets tempted by every female but is 'too righteous, ' or something to that effect, to act upon any emotion. But the author is very, very shallow in his writing of conflicts and characters.

Essentially it goes like this 100% for 500+ chapters: Han Li meets someone. Said someone wants to befriend or work with Han Li. Han Li gets betrayed. Han Li succeeds.... more>> Han Li breaks through in cultivation in a time-skip chapter.

This cycle repeats and repeats and repeats. Apparently every single person, bug, plant, and dust fleck has an insidious plan against Han Li and is physically and mentally incapable of being honest on pain of permanent death. There are literally no side characters for more than 30-50 chapters and those that manage to exist that long are unequivocally going to betray Han Li for some petty s*upid reason the author can't think of- because there is never a legitimate explanation other than the most shallow and plot-holed excuse.

Over-all it's an average, not-so-great, read with little depth. <<less

Han Li is the most reasonable MC ever born.

Most normal human being MC (although he is an immortal, well immortal and mortal is still a human race)

He is not arrogant nor hypocrite

Not a spermbrain MC

Long story short all he do are make sense

This is a tough story for me to review. The power up of a pretty mediocre cultivator is done in an interesting way. The fights are usually pretty interesting and the MC is pretty good at knowing when to be low key and when to exterminate a problem which I appreciate. My issues mostly come with the MC's interactions with other characters. He trusts no one. He has no loyalty or meaningful relationship with anyone. Not that there's been a lot of characters introduced that are worthy of trust or... more>> loyalty. Allies turn on each other at the drop of a hat. I guess that's the world the author wanted to create but it makes for a very dull and predictable read if you like interesting characters. Right now it's just a kill, steal, power up marathon. Ok to pass the time but not good enough to be in my faves. <<less

A solidly interesting story, if a bit slow-paced. The core conceit of this story is basically, 'what happens when someone who is kind of bad at cultivation nevertheless decides to pursue immortality?' If you like canny, scheming main characters, then this is definitely a story that you should check out. However, because of the main character's (admittedly justifiable) paranoia, they wind up not forming a lot of close attachments to people or ideas and this can get a little one-note. The Portal Of Wonderland, a story by the same author,... more>> has similar concepts but with a much more appealing main character. <<less

This novel is a refreshing break from the usual overpowered for no reason main characters that are seen in other popular xanxia. Don't get me wrong, I like those novels, too, but occasionally it's nice to read something different.

The only negative comment I would have with this novel is the slow start, however for the character to progress logically and without random lucky occurances, this kind of start is necessary. And it's worth it.

My advice would be to stick with the novel through the first hundred or so chapters, it'll... more>> be worth it. <<less

As of chapter 107, so far it's still an enjoyable read...

Nothing groundbreaking, just basic xianxia weak to strong story thanks to lots of luck (cheat treasure) and hard work and some intelligence on the part of the MC.

My reservations come from the impression I have that the MC may well become a psychopath dedicated to cultivation, forsaking friends and love in the process, and I personally hate that kind of MC.

Spoiler

So far, he shrugs off the killing of one friend, kind of despise another friend for falling in love, he started killing without compunction despite being a "normal" kid, and then seem to fall in "love" with the first beautiful girl he meets despite never having exchanged a word with her at this point...

I'm afraid he's going to become another "might makes right" impulsive as*hole MC...
At which point I'll drop the story and change my rating from 3 to 2
But who knows? I may be wrong, maybe it will be great!

Love it! This novel give really a "common cultivator" feeling!

Edit: Yeah I guess I was too lazy to write a long review but what I wrote above is enough to describe what I like the most about this novel.

Other novels' MC are just unfit for their true age but here we have a MC who is wise and careful, the more he is old the more he have detached attitude towards the world around him which fitting his age and cultivation. His fighting prowess is obtained because of his careful... more>> attitude, he is different from some other reckless and bratty-like MC who don't grew up mentally. Also bad guys aren't all s*upid. A funny point about this novel is how often he meet beauties cultivating charm techniques but never went deep in their relationship (beside one :P) , they are at most friends (ex: helping each other when meet somewhere) unlike some novels with their MC either wooing them or provoking them. <<less

I’ve been trying to read and really like this novel (this is the top ranked novel in Qidian afterall) but for some reason I just can’t relate at all or feel some sort of curiosity towards the story.

ISSTH was slow but there was something about it that kept me interested and which powered me through the slow start. That something for some reason hasn’t emerged for ARMJI at all. I think I’ve stopped reading it and tried to resume reading it 4 times and I’m still only at chapter 45.

Oh... more>> well, I’ll just leave it in my “To Read” for now and see if my attitude towards it will change in a few months. <<less

As a reader who don't like harem, I wasn't expecting to find one in this novel, that why I'm dropping it, like sh*t having harem in a story will ruin it and the why the ML acts 'yeah too luck' and the he behave in future chapters well I will add the way the plot become repetitive that I want to punch the author in the face.

Pathetic piece of crap. Never have I read anything which is as boring as this one.

Author has a very limited set of phrases and vocabulary. After just 100 chapters the whole novel will keep repeating itself. Battles are very boring and too much draw out.

There is no romance or comedy or suspense.

MC is just like a robot and you will never emotionally connect with him. Do yourself a favor and please don't read this.

I had believed what I heard/saw others saying. That he was no genius, he had mediocre talent, he didn't have a powerful teacher teaching, he didn't have any treasures, no mysterious cultivation techniques, no fighting skills that no one recognized the value of... In less than 40 chapters, he had:

This novel is good especially on it's early stages.

I will try my best to interpret what I felt after reading this whole novel on different portions in this review and there will be spoilers ahead (and sorry If I made some errors in my grammar).

spoilers about cultivation ranks as I will spoil some info about them in this review:

... more>> qi -> foundation-> core -> nascent -> deity -> spatial -> body -> grand

Human world: qi -> foundation-> core -> nascent -> deity

early stages: Struggle and hardships frequently occur in the early stages on this novel. Some interesting fights also take place and you will get the feeling of "you lose some but you also win some". MC isn't op and you will get into the story unless you read like a f*cking cheetah.

middle stages: this is the part where he got to nascent stage. I think this is also the part where he's starting to get powerful. He's also getting some remarkable treasures. They are remarkable as he will still use those treasure until the end of the novel.

late stages: he got to deity and started to go for a mission. His mission is to get the f*ck out and go to spirit realm because human world sucks. He is also one of the pinnacle in terms of power in human world.

Spirit realm: deity -> spatial -> body -> grand

early stages: You will kinda feel the struggle in the beginning after he entered the spirit realm, the struggle is a lot different though as he is more experience and have more treasures to his disposal if something really happens to him.

middle stages: Do you know the meaning of snowballing? That's basically what is happening on this part. Basically he is getting more and more powerful as time pass by. Getting more and more treasures and cultivation techniques where he is becoming more powerful than the same cultivation base. You could say that he is extremely fortunate, almost all of the encounters and events become win-win situation. You will not see the MC struggle at all.

late stages: This part is when he became body integration stage. This is also part where no body integration stage can manage to defeat him. The only thing that can defeat this man is grand ascension stage and it's need to be on it's prime condition and more powerful than average grand ascension stage to even have a chance to kill this man. Hmm what would happen then when he reached grand ascension stage you ask? Well it's basically game over to all of them. As for his enemies? There's only two remarkable opponents while the rest is basically sitting ducks in front of him. While reading on the last few chapters, the author skip some battles and events which is a smart move as I can pretty much predict what would happen next.

OVERALL THE NOVEL IS GOOD AND THIS IS MY BEST NOVEL SO FAR BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST NOVEL I COMPLETED AS ALL OF THE PREVIOUS NOVELS I READ GOT DROPPED AT SOME POINT SO YEAH REVEREND INSANITY IS PROBABLY THE NEXT ONE. <<less

I picked this novel up again after a long break and reading it felt like a slog. One reason is overwriting, the author feels the need to write about every little mundane event in exhausting detail. When Han Li is travelling, every place he passes needs to be described, there must also be many weak monster encounters along the way, their physical descriptions and attack moves must be included. The colour and shape of the moves that the MC uses to take care of them must be described. What I... more>> hate is that the objects of these descriptions are completely and utterly irrelevant they never show up again, or have the slighted bit of relevance later on.

This makes slows down the pace of the novel and makes scenes feel dragged out. If the MC needs to sign a contract, that will take a chapter. If The MC needs to make some regular pills and talismans you can bet that will take 3 chapters.

A few chapters will pass and absolutely nothing will happen, I just read about the MC doing some chores. I read a dozen chapters and the only thing of note that happened was he moved from point A to point B for a mission.

Not only that, but the descriptions are very repetitive. The MC's moves and treasures don't change much but every time, we have to be told every time, the colour shape etc.

Tldr The pace of the novel is dragged down by writing in overwhelming detail about trivial things and events. Pair this with the general slow pace of the action, and some arcs being pretty boring and it just feels like a slog. There are some enjoyable plots if you are willing to put up with a lot more sleep inducing parts, but I'd skip it personally. Also if you enjoyed the first couple arcs don't worry, it never returns to that style and level of quality again. <<less

Was looking forward to reading this novel but as I read through the novel, the experience gradually got worse.

What I like:

  • MC's starting point (mortal, poor spiritual root quality, cheat item is kinda 'capped')
  • MC is chaotic neutral, low-key person
  • The universe of the novel is expansive and full of potential
What I come to dislike:

  • Remember the starting point?
    Spoiler

Turns out, his spiritual root is a blessing to reach Spatial Tempering as it is necessary to have a five-elemental spiritual root. What about others' supposedly better spiritual roots? Author could only pray that no one noticed about this. He had gotten many OP items as well which contradicts his 'underdog MC' image from the start

    [collapse]
  • The author got very lazy.
    Spoiler

How to spice the novel up? Instead of incorporating tourneys, training auxiliary skills, etc. Author decided to just repeatedly nerf the MC while stringing some filler chapters. Author's laziness was also evident from how he decided to just turn many of MC's items from the mortal world into "unfathomable, rare items" that he can reuse in the Spirit Realm.

    [collapse]
  • Fight scenes were terrible. MC's enemy that is hyped up? Dead in half a chapter. That random guy who is 1-2 stages lower than MC? Two chapters. You get the gist.
  • Too many filler chapters. Compared to Martial World, this novel takes the cake.
