Amakawa Haruto died before he’d the chance to reunite with his childhood friend who disappeared five years ago. Rio, a young boy living in the slums seeks revenge for his mother who was mu*dered in cold blood in front of him when he was only five years of age.

There exists the earth many know of and there exists an alternate world. Two people, each with their own backgrounds and values. For odd reasons, the memories and personality of Haruto, one who should have died resurrects in Rio’s body. As the two are confused over their memories and personality fusing together, Rio (Haruto) decides to live in this new world.

Along with Haruto’s memories, Rio awakens an unknown but special power. If he’s to use it, it looks as if he can live a better life, but before that, Rio encountered a kidnapping which results in involving the two princesses of the Bertam Kingdom.

After saving the princesses, Rio is given a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy, a school for the rich and powerful. His background being a poor orphan who once lived in the slums, the school full of nobles was rather a detestable place to stay at.

TL;DR version: female author + male protagonist = you know why to steer clear from this novel
To be honest, I actually liked the novel when I first started. Sure, the OP skills and techniques he got from training in his teens and university years do not make much sense, but hey, would you prefer a novel about painful grinding? The guy has power, quite intellectual and especially more rational than some edgy teenager boys who apparently has not grown even when thrown into another world (Arifu *cough*, Tate no... more>> *cough*<-- well at least this guy is not full-blown nuts). But after reading like a hundred chapters or so, I'm EXTREMELY fed up with how this guy act. Not gonna comment anything on world building or character developmen, I cannot even notice those when this guy... If I have to say, his temperament is NOTHING like a male, not to mention a man. He endured the bullsh*t nobles have thrown at him for YEARS. Nobles one way or another always hate him for a reason beyond my capability of understanding, and so far I've only seen a number of nobles who acutally act like a real aristocrat instead of being the so-called typical noble d*ck; the number can be counted with one hand, mind you. Sorry but that ain't how medieval society worked, this country should have fallen a long time ago because it is controlled by single-minded aristocrats. And also for some reason every stundent falls for those gossips. Are they like f**king apes? Well, the plot was there to make our lovely protagonist shine, right? And she (the author) screwed that up completely. What are you gonna do when people start gossiping about you? Yeah, not investigating the cause and just ignore them because you don't give a f***. You saved the princess and then got framed, what to do? Running away which equals to admitting you did that. What to do when jerks come to you and swear at you for no reason? Ignoring them, yup. Hm, and as far as I can remember (I don't bother to check anymore), the guy has not even fight in serious manner (that is, kill when neccesary). Oh yeah, and there's also this part when

he meet his crush and for the next eternity to come he will never reveal his indetity

. The author prepared a setting of revenge, but I almost forgot it if I did not read others' review. So, what have we here? A protagonist who is so "merciful" to the point of so emotionally weak to take any action and whose endurance is higher than the cosmos :| Male authors often portray female characters pretty incorrectly for many don't really understand women even partly, and this is an example of a reverse. <<less

I hate this.

Yes, let's get that out of the way. I hate this.

That's not to say I've always hated it, at first I liked it and looked forward to more. But then... sigh... I don't even know where to start.

Let's start with the most glaring problem. I don't believe in labelling anyone Beta, but if I am to give the award of Beta MC Of The Year, it would've been this guy. Despite having the power to destroy a country, he takes every abuse like a sissy. At first I... more>> justified it as just him being loyal and emotionally sterile, but the events that he went through should've made even Gandhi snap and go nuclear!

Then his childhood friend and his little sister appeared. I can understand being afraid of his little sister's hate, and I don't deny that some really timid people will not speak the truth in that kind of circumstance. Yet, his circumstance is severe, him being hated by his sister because they were separated by their parents divorce, and his little sister has been thinking of her real older brother as the worse scum ever, and he knows this, yet he does nothing. Which brother wouldn't feel pained when his little sister think of him in such a bad way, yet it was not true? Surely no matter how timid or awkward you are, you would try to correct the mistakes. But unlike normal people, he did not. He kept being there, knowing that his little sister hate his guts.

Then when given a choice of whether or not to tell his childhood friend about the truth, he instead chose to send a letter when he's been living with her for months. A LETTER! TELL HER DIRECTLY YOU DUMB p**sy! And then someone said that there would a be NTR, where the hero ripped apart his letter and his childhood friend followed the hero because the hero lied to her stating that the MC hated her.

I didn't want to read that. If even without NTR the story had been terrible, what would happen once you put an NTR in a terrible story, where you have grown attached to the pu*sy MC for the past 100 chapters? So of course, I stopped reading it.

After chapter 40 or so, there was not a chapter go by that I didn't say, "What the hell?" Reading this is a very painful experience. Not painful because of the tragedy within the story, but painful because I had to read about this train-wreck of a protagonist that is a contradiction all over the place. It's like the author just read some other people's stories and copied those scenes thinking it would work, but it didn't. <<less

Dropped at chapter 112 because it has become annoying and painful to read. (has been for a while now)

I somewhat liked it at first since I don't mind gary stu's. Besides being scared of confessing the childhood friend I don't really mind his personallity. MC is strong from the start aswell so no random power ups or plot armor.

The story itself is just rather laid back and more of an adventure and human relationships so it's good for a light read if you don't mind the anger inducing suspense.... more>> There is almost a never ending suspense because you know something is going to happen but it takes ages to get there. Around chapter 100 you learn about the whole devil stuff but I'm sure that before anyhting truly happends you'll be 100 chapters further and no idea what they are plotting.

The same is with his childhood friend, He's been with her for a while and scared to confess, which I could understand since 9 years no see and child promises etc.
The problem here is that the moment he does decide to confess everything goes haywire. So you were already reading 30+ chapters or more about them being ''together'' so when he wants to confess, of course something happens.

It makes it feel like some horror game, you hear the eerie sounds but after 1 hour with no jump scare or nothing happening you'll just be mad. Then when the jump scare happends you're not scared but more relieved it's finally over. Well like I said chapter 112 is like volume 5 or something.
Spoiler

She (childhood friend) finds out in volume 10. See the agonizing slow pain you have to wait for them to reunite?

[collapse]

So yes the unending suspense that revolves around the world that just doesn't get adressed is simply a slow agonizing torture.

If you can personally handle that said torture then I can recommend if you just want an adventure + human relation type of novel. Otherwise if you seek anything else especially some action or romance... don't bother. <<less

First, if you're thinking that this is a revenge type of novel, you're wrong. This is a heartwarming, fantasy, harem story. If you don't like the MC's attitude, if you don't like how the people around him act, then don't read it.

I can understand why some of the readers may not like the MC, because when he is still in his original world, he didn't even had a chance to confessed to a girl he likes. So what? A person who do anything to improve himself for others even though... more>> "that" person is not looking at him has a charm on it, right?

I'm not really good at putting my thoughts in words, but all I can say is I really love the atmosphere of this story. It's somehow tragic but calm. A person who is going through many hardships, even if sometimes he's running away, he still works hard to improve himself, that's how I view this story. That's why I love it. <<less

I will just going to say this out loud: most people rated this novel low because they except s*upid thing like Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari. This actually a good novel with great characters building. Dont read this novel if you expect the MC to flip out and go vengeful.

This series isn't awful but it also doesn't match with the description and/or genres. For example, the ‘adventure’ genre, the general storyline of this series is along the lines of: MC spends several chapters in city A, MC leaves city A. Six months later, the MC arrives in city B. The author does not spend a single sentence describing what happens in those six months between city A and city B. Presumably this is the adventure part, where the MC is exploring and fighting monsters and whatnot. But none of this is described or even hinted to. Thus, this is not an adventure novel, it’s a travel novel. Putting aside the adventure (or lack thereof), this novel is more like a melodrama (not referring to slice of life), like those K-dramas on tv. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that 90% of this novel is wasted on redundant and annoying exposition of the characters’ feelings and emotions.

Though by far the largest flaw in this series is the characterization of the main character. You know how some male authors are unable to write female characters properly, thus leading to dull side characters. Well the opposite is also true. The problem in this case is that the MC is a man and the author of this series is a woman. So instead of dull side characters it’s a dull main character. This MC is just way too wishy washy and is more beta than even the most beta MC. This is because the author just doesn't understand the male mind. For readers like me whose enjoyment of a novel is based on what extent to which they can relate with the MC, this novel will not be a fun read.

It started off so much better than the usualy Isekai. There's a poweful loli, but they don't spend the entire novel sexualizing, the MC is powerful but not completely OP, No super convenient status and item storage system, none of that 50% of the novel being about food. I thought we'd finally gotten a series that wasn't full of s*upid tropes, then we get to volume 2, and we have the new animal-eared loli and suddenly half the chapters are about food, then we get to volume 3 and OP... more>> gets his s*upid broken magic storage, now in volume 4, for no reason whatsoever, MC is suddenly godlike at everything because he spent two years in a demi-human village, and every new thing he's a god at is waived away as "I learned it at my time in...".

So much promise slowly reduced to absolute generic garbage, just spread out over 4 volumes. <<less

MC doesn't answer affections of many women because of his childhood girlfriend. When she come to this world he doesn't confess to her but just protecting her it's so hard to say I am... and I love you he written a letter but wonder what happened? It was intercepted by lame hero. There will be harem but we must wait another 100 chapters for MC and his love interest meet and he grow some balls to confess to her again. 183 chapter stil no confession (I mean second confession because MC tried once (Failure)) Maybe in 20 volume he will confess or author will drop this novel he will be not first and not last author that did something like this.

I am not sure. I had gotten some expectactions from Rio and the word "revenge", but...

Rio is a slum boy who lives every day with thirst of revenge towards thugs who r*ped and killed his mother not after his father died.

In another story, there is Amakawa Haruto who came to visit from another world after his own drama but ended up dying in a traffic accident.

As it turned out, Rio gave control of his body to our Haruto guy. And they live happily (n) ever after as a pacifist... more>> who just happens to be good in combat.

Plotwise, the series can get anywhere from 1 star to 4, but execution-wise, eeh, I'm giving it a 1. <<less

I have now found my 2nd dropped series ever in the course of my long reading list. Words can not describe how... atrociously painful reading this series has become. This is like NTR except the MC just takes it all lying down and then the author forces the situation to move on, away from the previously stated issue. (Disclaimer: there is no NTR in this series.) Small rant aside, here is my review:

character development has, or was, handled fairly well. Characters had decent reasons for their actions. I did not... more>> have any glaring issues for quite a while. But then their personalities started to become dynamic, and change. Unfortunately this was handled exceedingly poorly. I dropped this series (ch113) at which point the sudden "wtf this makes no sense" personality change for a few of the side characters left me gobsmacked, and not in a good way.

Action is not this series forte. Combat is short, and quickly brushed aside by MCs awesome power. Drama however is heaped upon itself to almost cringeworthy levels. While it makes sense in some situations, in others this drama is piled on itself by the author just to get a rise out of the reader. It succeeds in doing so as this is one of the most aggravating and headache inducing novels I've ever had the misconception of enjoying.

the world building is good, with plenty of scenarios and plot opportunities left open for the future. However, in retrospect with so many options a few have all but died out as though forgotten even though they seemed fairly important. Especially given how much time has actually passed since the beginning.

Grammar from most of the translations are... subpar. I have looked at many of the chapters and wondered if they really had an editor — though I clearly see editor notes in those chapters which implies they do. Plenty of mistakes and more than a few lines that I gave up trying to understand.

all in all I would say my rating "would have been" a solid 2 stars, maybe a rough 3. Basically below or around average but not necessarily bad. But while drama can be good, too much of it on top of forced situations for the sole reason because the author wants it, even if it detracts from everything that was already in place, is in no way good. Coupled with some other issues, ultimately my rating has dropped to a single star.

this series can, could, and probably will get better. Some will also enjoy it where I have not. But in the end, when I see something decent turned on it's head by the authors lack of commitmet to his own designs, I too can not be committed to continue reading. <<less

The personality that the author gave the MC is beyond infuriating. As countless other reviews have already foreshadowed, this novel is all about the author building hope for the MC and then dashing it to the ground because reasons. All the other characters don't like the MC for any particular reason other than he's a "commoner", which leads to a huge amount of bullying and the like. For some reason, our MC is Jesus/Buddha reincarnated and won't lift a finger against those who actively seek to harm him.

Spoiler

Given that he possessed the body of a boy who's mother was repeatedly and brutally r*ped in front of him when he was a child and all the rage that is fueling his very existence, there were a lot of more interesting paths the author could have taken. For example, he could give the MC a bipolar personality, calm, meticulous and aloof some times, and brash, spiteful and enraged at other times.

IMO it would have been much more interesting to see how that might've actually fueled his growth as a person. Instead, he's the perfect pacifist who barely utilizes violence to solve a problem despite violence sometimes being the only way to solve the problem.

[collapse]

Other than a boring MC who makes the reader rage at how s*upidly naive and pacifistic he is, the side characters honestly aren't that much better. Every single girl just happens to like him (for no reason in particular) and all the guys seem to hate him (again, for no reason in particular). He's beset on all sides with the harsh realities of feudal society and yet he does absolutely nothing to even improve his own situation. I get the reasoning of he's a little guy and he can't change such a morally corrupted society, but at the same time, it's pretty s*upid to also say that he has no individual thoughts of selfishness to achieve a better life for himself. He simply runs away from all of his problems instead of confronting them, which I think is the primary reason why so many people dislike this novel. <<less

So, I have read every chapter that has been translated and released, as well as finished the raw web novel chapters (the author hasn't updated in over a year). From my understanding, the light novel version is substantially different from the web novel version, so maybe some of my gripes have been fixed... but I doubt it.

I am giving this 3 stars because it's not perfect, and despite my rant which is soon to follow, it's not terrible. So, let's start with some pros first.

  1. The world is consistent. This is big to me since I am also an author and love world-building... the world and laws need to be consistent. Distance travel, laws, magic systems... they seem to be consistent in this work which is a plus.
  2. Characters stay how they are. While it is true that characters can and should grow, if they differ too greatly they don't feel real and whole. The author makes sure that while some characters can seem similar, they are consistent with who they are.
Alright, that's enough for pros.... time for cons, and I have 2 major gripes.... the main character, and the plot.

  1. Lets start with the plot. During the first couple of chapters, this seems like a darker fantasy novel with depth and grit. A teen, suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (aka, Split Personalities), who is an orphan, lost his young and his mother to r*pe/mu*der, and beaten by royalty and nobility. It has a grab... and yet it entirely seems to no longer matter come 20 chapters in! Revenge takes a back seat, the story of his parents is solved pretty damn quickly, and everything in this book happens so painfully slow!
  2. Now, the MC.... as many have said before me... this character isn't actually real. He's too perfect. No professional combat training in either life, no magic training, no education or formal training... and yet the guy might as well be Einstein. Super OP without even trying. In fact, this character is almost FLAWLESS! I say almost because he has 2 flaws; 1 real and 1 perceived. The perceived flaw is that.... the guy wants revenge. Yup, the MC views him wanting revenge as a flaw. Seriously lady (author) ? His only actual flaw is that the dude never gets mad, never asks for what is owed to him, and is seriously way to humble. I get that Japanese culture is different from here in the west, but I've never seen anybody THIS freaking humble!
    Spoiler

Save a freaking princess... not once but twice! And just "I don't deserve this much" when given a reward!

    [collapse]
The character has only ever gotten mad TWICE in the entire work, and is always apologizing or lowering his head or... kill me if I read this one more time.... awkwardly scratching his cheek. He is the most passive OP beta-male character I have ever read. No backbone, no desire, just 100% humility with some genius sprinkled on for good measure.
I'm not going to get into the mess that is romance in this. It is clearly a harem manga, with the author seemingly moving towards a large happy ending, but it's getting nowhere. Like I stated, maybe the light novel (which the author clearly prefers since there is about 16[?] novels released for that while the webnovel hasn't seen an update since April last year) fixes these issues, but since 1 is how the MC is...I don't have high hopes.

I was going to give this story two stars but I miss cl**ked but let me say that the story is pretty dissapointing. The MC is very unrealistic, its full of cringe worthy moments whenever the MC interacts with the love interests and the story is very predictable.

The MC after living in the slums got into a high class school where he is bullied constantly for 5 years and he was framed for trying to kill royalty and what did he do, he freaking did nothing at all, not to... more>> mention his attitude when dealing with nobles he would go out of his way to downplay all his achievments it made him look lika an asskisser with no pride at all.

There is also the problem with the childhood friend heroine, the MC in his past life pretty much dedicated his whole life to this girl then when he finaly saw her again he was devastated because he thought that she already has a boyfriend then suddenly she disappear and pretty much considered dead but he still dedicated to her ignoring the advances of other girls and now he has a new life but he is still dedicated to the supposed dead childhood friend whom he has not seen for atleast a decade. When he finaly saw her again he turned chicken and hid his identity and let her go without even trying to talk to her in person I was like WTF are you doing jackass!!!

Overall its a reincarnated in another world story with OP protagonist with no balls full of cliches and cringe moments and has all heroins being damsels in disterss. I only read it because I ran out of other novels to read. <<less

Picked it up after reading the manga. Thought the plot was interesting

Sure enough I try to read the WN. The plot is at least the same looking back

Mind you that I'm gonna base my review after reading Arifureta (same genre, but more fun)

... more>> It started out interesting just like manga. But this is where the problem starts. He died, yes but after that he transferred to another world and become a boy which his background is UNKNOWN until chapter 50+

Okay fair, not gonna mind that. Its gonna get better, right?

No

Somehow after being a fugitive it become a foodfest and tons of girls coming out of nowhere

I cant believe that there is 1 chap dedicated for cooking class only.

Also, the plot after act 1 is just plain mess. It gets worse at Hero Summoning, which come out of nowhere without any explanation

Im done. I tried giving it a chance after he knew his revenge target. But nope. The author just threw his revenge and replacing his revenge with harem.

Also the MC character is weak and shallow. Which makes it more annoying to read

Here I thought Im gonna get another fun action Isekai WN. But no, after act 1 it just sh** all over. Such a waste of time.

  • I dont know if its the author or the translation but the writing. In some chap you can see writer just repeating something over and over. Which makes this WN annoyingly long when you can just skip most of the part. Seriously, many parts of this WN can be skipped. Even if you skip it you can still get the gist of the things happening in there.
I hope the manga can fix the problem. But I wont get my hopes up... <<less
