The Heavily Armoured Noble Girl Monette: How To Break a Curse You Don’t Remember Casting

Description

“As if I’d marry an ugly woman like you!”

Monette, a noble daughter of the House of Idira, was hurt deeply by what her fiancé, Prince Alexis, had said.

To rub salt on the wound, her younger sister was then made Alexis’ fiancée instead of her. Unsure just what part of her was ugly, Monette develops a complex… and begins to cover her whole body with iron armour.

And so, Monette researches magic alone in the old castle… until one day, two men come to visit her…

“Monette, break my curse!”

This is a story of Monette, who wears armour from the top of her head to the tip of her toes; Prince Alexis, who suffers under a curse of bad luck that forces him to stick his foot in a bottomless swamp at least once a week; and Percival, a worrywart knight who spoils people when he’s tired. It is a story of their journey as all three of them think respectively:

I’ve got the most common sense here.

I can’t decide whether I want to continue reading this or not. I like the MC, and I find the premise interesting, but I rather hate the two male characters—not for the way one of them acted in the past, but because of the way they treat the MC in the present: extremely rudely. There seems to be an incronguity between one of the character’s reputation along with how the MC thinks of him with his actual behavior. I understand it’s supposed to be comedic, but I don’t find their... more>> behavior that funny. Maybe I’m just in the wrong mood to appreciate it. As it stands, I would really hate the MC to fall for either character, although the cover picture seems to give a lie to that hope. <<less

When I first started reading this I had read through a couple of reviews and all of them said the same thing. "The prince and his retainer are horrible people and the MC is the only good one." Well, I believe I have read far enough into this novel to give my own opinion on this matter.

The prince is not nearly as bad as everyone makes him out to be and I would go as far as to say he's the ultimate victim of the story while yes he does... more>> have what can be described as bad manner sometimes that argument immediately goes away when you think along the lines of him being the crown prince, in fact, he's one of the nicest characters in this story so far. Described pre-curse to be the perfect prince the only reason readers have a problem with him is how it's described he first interacts with the MC, but guess what he tries to apologize to her MANY TIMES and she rejects every single one of them. My theory is that the prince was just being shy and acting like boys typically do, nothing more to it.

Finally the MC, In my opinion, this MC does not deserve any praise or sympathy and her personality is semi-rotten from bitterness that's unjustified. Yes, she was called ugly by her fiance when they first met but people do not break down like that it's like she's choosing not to move past it and instead is looking for an excuse to wallow in her own self-pity, as I said earlier the prince tried to apologize but she was too stuck in her own self-hatred to acknowledge it. She chose to shut herself in that armor, not for any good reason but because she got her feeling hurt. Yet, She still blames the prince for this entire situation. The only reason why I don't hate her entire character is the fact that she still elects to help the prince after her "so-called tragedy".

This MC is her own enemy, not the prince and not anyone else's. <<less

Monette is a very charming and funny MC, she lives her life without issues other than her childhood trauma of being rejected and called ugly by her former fiance Prince Alexis, as a result, she has taken to hiding her self beneath an enchanted armor to protect herself from further harm. Years later the Prince is now engaged to Monette's younger sister and was living quite happily till he was recently cursed, the bad luck that befalls him is rather creative, and if you are a kindhearted person, you may... more>> think its undeserved.

The prince is rather generic, he's noble, handsome and works hard for the people, yet that blemish to his character remains regarding his treatment of Monette. Given the nature of this curse, Monette is the number 1 suspect, during her self-imposed exile, she has learned witchcraft, it is Alexis who thinks she is the culprit.

While denying her involvement the Prince and his bodyguard decide to impose upon her, as she is able to ward off temporarily the effects of the curse, begging Monette to accompany them, she agrees under certain conditions, if they are not met she won't help them, as they journey together we get to know more about Monette and the other 2 characters.

Personally, I can't stand the Prince or Percival his guard, I would rather they go DIAF. However... Monette is an endearing character that will have you cheering and crying for her, the amount of suffering she has endured might seem small, but it affected her quite deeply. I find myself constantly telling Monette to leave this troublesome duo, that she deserves her peaceful life away from such annoyances, I can only hope that she finds a cure for his curse so she can finally get rid of them.

Only one chapter so far, but so far....

Well-written, and great translations. Definitely has promise. Honestly, this first chapter from Kimamani has possibly one of the best translations that I've seen linked on this site, and I'd read it for that alone. The story looks to be rather absurdly comedic with plenty of ridiculousness coming up.

Update: 7 chapters in, and my opinion still stands. Really hoping that someone picks this back up!

What this novel is all about in a nutshell...

"I'm sorry Monette. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry"

"It's not ugly, it's a kitty cat!!"/"Ohhh it's a cute kitty cat!"

... more>> "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry"

"Ohhh hi friendsy friends! Roberston, ATTTACK!"

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry"

* Bodyguard goes into random moe mode for 15 minutes

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry"

* Constant narrations of Monette doing stuff that cannot be seen due to her armor.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry....."

........

Cue in 16 chapters later and the plot still hasn't advanced yet. Sure, the translations are well done. But while the chapters are rather lengthy, filling them with complete repetition have now annoyed me to no end. The tone of the first 10 chapters is very depressing due to the amount of times the two main cast apologized and how they carry themselves. For the novel's comedy, I have seen better and more fluid comedy attempts in anime before, so for me personally the Prince's "bad luck" events were not that funny. Giving this novel a drop. My motto when it comes to reading is, that, if you cannot get to the point within the first 10 chapters, it's not worth my time. <<less

Admittedly, I was able to guess the main cause of the curse, but the reason for the curse, I thought, was very unique.

Overall, I would rate it as a 4/5. Story wise. It serves lightheartedness, trauma, comedy, romance etc in small doses. The doses were probably too small for me or maybe Google translate just wasn't able to communicate the story well enough, but I did like it. I thought the story was cute.

I can totally sympathize with you, Monette. Although I don't have the same trauma, I also like to hide away most of the time. Although, in her case, it's more reasonable.

Percival and Alexis have been nothing but trouble, even going so far as forgetting to say thank you and imposing heavily on her; but they've redeemed themselves recently. I also like that Monette did not easily forgive him (although you do feel some sort of pity for the prince later on). Overall, I grew to like all 3 characters, especially... more>> Monette, and I'm hoping that they resolve the mystery behind the Prince's curse and Monette gets her long-awaited peace. <<less

First of all, this isn't your type of novel where they face multiple enemies per chapter, the pacing is slowish but it isn't a bad thing, since it would've bothered me if she had said yes right away and it seems more realistic that way.

The characters are pretty good as well but I noticed many reviews criticizing the characters and their decisions without finishing the novel, and while I understand their opinions, throughout the novel you get to know them more and the reasons for their actions. There aren't too... more>> many characters and everyone that is there has a purpose.

Monette is a shy girl with little to no friends. Her personality is not easily fixed just by saying "get over it and go out to meet people" and it is understandable that she wouldn't want to help the chair breaking prince that had previously been the reason for her main trauma, however she takes advantage of the situation and helps them while also doing something she has wanted to do for a while.

The prince is a very hated character from what I've read in the comments, but he is not a bad person. There was the trauma thingy (although we know more about that towards the end and even if he did, they were children and he probably wouldn't know the consequences that comment would have in the future). He isn't bad, but troubles Monette to help them, however you have to take into account that he is quite desperate, plus he thanks/apologizes to her a lot seeing that she is helping them a lot.

This isn't necessarily bad, but I would have liked to see her be actually ugly or at the very least average instead of a beauty, since I kinda wanted to see the love be "you are beautiful to ME, and that's what matters", or "it doesn't matter how you look like, because I love you nonetheless" or smth... but it isn't something that bothers me, it's just a thought.

All in all, a great and imo short novel with great pacing and funny characters that I could empathize with. <<less

Maybe I'll add some part later on my review, but well, for now I'll say that were I Monette, I wouldn't forgive the prince nor help him ever, not because that childish and simple grudge of being called ugly, but because he practically ruined her life. After all he was the crown prince, after being rejected by him not only her family disinherited her, but her future chances of getting married were voided, since no noble will want a woman rejected by royalty and no noble family will want a... more>> commoner entering in their bloodline, even if she is an exile. Said that, since her life was destroyed from childhood, I can't accept commentaries treating her as a petty woman, because even like this she helped them all the same

Edit c48: All in all the cat is out of the bag (not gonna spoiler), but I still say that Monette should hold at least part of her grudge on the prince and the knight, even if their relationship has improved (not gonna spoiler again), anyways, I'm already wishing she that she can cast off that armor

Edit2 Completed: It was a good ride, I liked that she didn't forgot her roots (as character) even if her revenge got reduced to childish pranks, and the wedding' scenes were certainly funny and nice to read <<less

Very nice story, pleasant to read and a good translation. I hesitated between 4 and 5 stars, but decided on 4, because at some point the story is predictable and I'm not quite satisfied with few details of the story.

Small inconsistency in the story:

Spoiler

At the beginning both Alexis and Percival were surprised at how Monette eats in the armour, but Percival is a witch slayer, so he should be able to see her mouth normally. I assume that at this point the author haven't planned yet for Percival to be immune to magic.

[collapse]

A little disappointment:
Spoiler

I was disappointed with the armoured wedding. There were many other possibilities instead of just wearing a dress on top of armour... She could've voiced her wish to go without armour, but somehow everyone started treating her as if she was the armour and she didn't manage to voice her thoughts... How?? There was also an option to have a dress made so that it covers her from head to toe instead of armour, but I guess nobody thought about that and that irritates me.

[collapse]

A small "I want more":
Spoiler

I would love to see a bit more of the story where Monette learns to live without the armour, for example first time she peals off the whole armour and Percivals reaction or the moment she goes into the city without at least the helmet and so on.

I really like this novel. The characters are fun, the premise is good and the comedy hit the spot.

I love Monette, she is humble, but snarky and a bit bitter even with her weird traumatic past she still manages to grow as a snarky but also a gentle person and I really respect that.

The prince, Alexis is not pleasant, dense and insensitive, tho he doesn't really means it, but I enjoy watching him suffer throughout the story. He is actually the most gentle person in this series but kind of... more>> lack common sense and tact, he is an idiot prince through and through.

Percival is bitter, rude and prone to unnecessary remarks towards Monette, but he is slowly changing and starts appreciating her good deeds quite soon (but not her sense of art). And plus- Monette already find his weakness so she can tease and bully him whenever she wants to.

Their combination are fun and enjoyable, their banter are funny and it makes me curious how the curse breaking will unfold. This novel has so much potential! And it is not that long to boot! I hope the translators find the strength keep doing the good work!

The thing that bothers me the most is... How the novel change the pov, from third person pov, and then to someone's pov every few paragraph. <<less

Clever and Funny!

This is one of those light novels that I categorize as "Clever" the way the story is told. The character specially the main and the 2 other sub main character are well structure. I will not go into any major details since that would ruin your experience. 3/5

The light novel took me few hours to finish and I find it easily digested, simple, and amusing. The main focus of the story is as said in the title. With light spices of fantasy and historical elements, we will get through a journey in which the protagonist finding a way to dispel a curse of the befallen. It may sound serious, but we will be entertained with 'several' interesting events and funny exchange between the main characters. Since I relied on MTL, I will only disclose about the plot... more>> and characters in the novel.

Plot

Spoiler

Driven in the first point of view, the story is fast paced and feels like a short fairy tale, about an adventure of a protagonist trying to break a curse of the his/her loved one. But this is a reversed version in which the protagonist is a noble witch who is 'requested' to break a curse of her ex-fiancé/prince, who was the cause of her being heavily armored. Sounds ironic but interesting. The whole story isn't that complex but still refreshing. However, the sequence of events is a bit anticlimactic from the beginning until the mid point plot. Because it's mainly focuses with the events that caused by the cursed prince and how the protagonist came to learn and respond to it. But the premises also tells us the protagonist journey to gain her self-worth and confidence in which had been wrapped quite wholesome at the end. Aside of that, the romance elements is a bit forced because how fast the love plot developed. But considering this is like a fairy tail, I believe it was intended. Unfortunately, it would be nice if there was a flashback of the protagonist before she wore an armor in an extra chapter. Because I feel that there are some parts in which the story has yet clarify.

[collapse]

Characters

Spoiler

Meanwhile, the main characters, an insecure heavily armored witch, an unlucky prince, and his odd sleeping habit knight, are unique and dynamic. The odd squad curse dispeller contrasted to that of the typical tale of a kind-sweet princess, a lucky-charming prince, and a strong knight. Focusing on three main characters on their journey toward dispelling the prince curse, a unique bond was created among them as they began to learn each other perspectives. Some of the main characters might be shown as a disagreeable at the beginning. But, as the story progresses, the interaction, belief, and prejudices in which each characters held on each other slowly change into positive route. For the character building, I feel the author could do much more about the main characters and giving them a chance to have a full clear arcs. But then, the main focus in this story is based of the protagonist's point of view.

[collapse]

Favorite Part

Spoiler

Robertson and Concetta. These two cute familiars are someone I need in real life. I really like their interaction with the protagonist. They are pivotal characters in revealing the protagonist's vulnerability and innermost thought, which also gives a break from all the unfortunate events fallen to the prince.

Last but not least, the heavily armored protagonist. She might not be the OP character you found. But what drawn me is her unprejudiced attitude and her confidence with her skill (except her insecurity). I do like how she is not completely recovered from her insecurity at the end. It was quite realistic and relatable in real life.

[collapse]

In conclusion, the light novel has been entertaining. It is a simple reading to break off from heavy story, which I've done. I had hope some extra story added to give a scene when the protagonist decides to wear an armor. Nevertheless, I'm quite satisfied with the wholesome and unique ending. <<less

This is surprisingly good. In fact, I don't place so much hope in this story but fortunately it's quite enjoyable. Now let's talk about the characters.

MC:

Spoiler

After being called ugly by the prince, she never dare to show herself again in front of all other people. That's why she wear an armour whenever she goes to town or when she meets other people. She always feels anxious, inferior, and insecure but she's also not that timid (it's shown in her interaction between prince and also Percival).

[collapse]

ML:

Spoiler

I don't know whose gonna be ML until in the middle of the story. At first, I thought the prince would be ML but it turns out, it's Percival.

In his first meeting with MC, he's a bit rude. Maybe because he's wary of her identity as a witch and also because he's anxious about the prince's safety. But he improves his behaviour over times and he slowly falls in love with MC even he doesn't know her true appearance.

But still I feel a bit pity for the prince. MC was originally his fiancee and he doesn't mean the words he said back then (it's the effect of the curse) but the damage was done. He always feels guilty towards MC even after all those years. And worst of all, his current fiancee is the one who cursed him even though he always cherised her. I hope he gets his happy ending too (maybe with Gina?).

[collapse]

The villainess:

Spoiler

I feel a bit complicated about Emily. She's not aware that her prayer would become a strong curse that affects many peoples. But she's not that innocent either. She turned a blind eye when her sister was casted aside by the prince and also her family.

I don't know if she deserves her ending or not but maybe it's for her own and also other people's safety.

[collapse]

Although I really enjoy this story, I'm a bit disappointed by the ending.

Spoiler

I wish MC could get rid of her armour once the curse is solved. But she still wears it even after her wedding. And also, why her parents never show up till the end? They still owe MC big time even though it's not entirely their fault.

Well... read this was pretty good.

I saw a lot of people saying that even if MC was really good, the other 2 male characters were like tr*sh. In my opinion it's not like that at all.

At first is a bit hard to sympathize with then, I'm not denying that (that's also because I didn't liked Percival at the start) but they are good characters too.

The Prince was really hardworking and he knew how cruel were his actions towards Monette.

Spoiler

I mean, he send her so many apologize gifts and tried so hard to make sure that he would never commit the same mistake

[collapse]

And Percival have his owns circumstances too. Since nobody is perfect, humanized characters shouldan't be like that too.

That being said, the good points of this novel are the really funny scenes. It also have a good plot (the type it's elaborate and if you pay attention you can discover the culprit before they say who it is but can't guess everything), the interactions between MC and the others are great and funny, the personality of the characters are solid and we can see how they became mature in the end.

I also think that story make us learn how to accept ourselves and that sometimes we need help because we can't do everything.

The story is really good so give it a chance.

P.S: I recommend you to not read it in a 'one go' (like I did) because we have long chapters and sometimes it takes time to advance in the story. So it's better if you read this and another novel at the same time.

Hope this review were helpful to you. <<less

At ch. 10:

It's good. I jumped to conclusions before reading too far (oops :P) but I can honestly say the author did a good job with the character set up. All of the characters are reasonable- you can't hate any person in particular as you can understand why they all do the things they do. It's not often you find a light novel that has a narrative woven around such reasonable characters (especially within the first 10 chapters). Looking forward to how it continues~

After completing:

Ugh what a disappointing ending! I... more>> hate these types of conclusions where

everyone is an innocent victim and even the villain was only bad against her will/without realizing. It feels like such a cop out; what's the point of making the bad guys white lotuses? We can't give them even a bit of malice?

Honestly, I'd give this 2 stars at best if the initial characterization wasn't so well done (despite it being super repetitive after chapter 10) so I'll settle at 3 stars for an alright story overall.
