I'm really disappointed in this userbase. They rather vote five stars for the generic xianxia novel where every chapter a random villain will appear and act like a ret*rd shouting tr*sh to the MC and die in three chapters because the author is milking his death. In this novel the characters aren't black and white, but between. Characters are not made for the sake of glorifying the MC. Each character has their own personality and some have more backstories than the other.

The MC is not a bloodthirsty psychopathic MC like... more>> the most MC in xianxias, he is more interesting than that. <<less

Most of the reviews say everything about Zhu Xian good point so i’ll point out reason why I don’t like Zhu Xian instead.

– There’s 2 translator and they use different name (vietnam and chinese I believe) so it’s very confusing.

– You see the goddamn tragedy tag? Yes MC is f*cked.

– Author is a f*cking sad*st and love to give false hope. I hope whatever happen to one of the main interest happen to author too lol.
Spoiler

HE LEAVE MY FAV CHAR IN VEGGIE STATE AND MC FAIL TO REVIVE HER. TRY FOR AN ENTIRE STORY AND FAIL!!!

All in all if you don’t like a lot of suffering (I don’t). You won’t like zhu xian

The author constantly makes the MC suffer, especially in terms of love. Don't know how to rate this, because writing is solid but the direction of the story is messed up. Maybe 3/5 based on my enjoyment level.

Spoiler

Adoptive sister falls in love with another guy and secretly dated him and eventually married him. Even though the MC never really confessed to her, I’m pretty sure she knows he likes her, yet she went after the cool guy. Felt like ntr.

The girl who expressed her love to him, end up in a coma and never recovered. Only after she sacrificed herself did the MC realized his love for her, thus starting his road of joining the dark side and becoming a wanted criminal.

The beautiful senior sister have a somewhat mutual love with the MC, though their feelings continued to remain ambiguous until the end. Due to the MC joining the dark side, they were like enemies similar to romeo and juliet. Also because of the coma girl, the MC couldn’t truly move on with her.

Until the end he never really acquired happiness. I know there is a Zhu Xian 2 which is still ongoing but I don’t know how that ties up to this story or whether the MC will ever have a happy ending.

You know how you have that one series you can't wait for? That one which leaves you a pile of feels after reading it? That is this series for me.

I read this after I just of how the MC of another Xianxia has just massacred a bunch of people and the awe everyone has over him.
I read this for the real human relationships that develop in this series.
I read it for the portrayal of "good" sects and "evil" sects.
Read it.

The main problem with the series is the... more>> complete lack of editing for the first chunk of the story. So expect a lot of errors on par with an MTL then the new translator changed all the names. Get past this which can be a problem I admit. And you will have read my favourite Xianxia <<less

Up to chapter 116 : I’m in a trance...

I can say that this xanxia is probably the more “accomplished” story since I begun reading chinese novels.

Almost all layouts are brought in, digested and reinvented in a new light. This story is incredible ! In fact, its so well written that I have often the sensation to read a mixt between an american best-seller and xanxia’s contents. After having read this story, I can only lament how bad, simple and childish are all the other xanxia.

In Zhu Xian, all the... more>> characters are “important”, “unique” and “unforgettable” (like in western style in which nothing written on the paper can be called “deletable”). There’s no s*upid protagonist, each one (good or bad) are well written and deeply developped in the story, they’re not fixed being and each of them evolve.

In fact, this story is so mature that it’s not always easy to see the depths of what can be called “right” or “wrong”. The political environnement and the many beliefs make this world so rich ! Many characters have to face doubts and changes.

This story is heartbreaking. I have never read, even in western novels, a story with so much emotions. I CRY and was shaken multiple times dammit ! We can observe the depth of an innocent mind falling slowly in the darkness. And a lot of well introduced emotions : happiness, sorrow, deep anger, hatred, loneliness, love, longing... I can guess this must be a first in a xanxia for a lot of people.

The storyline is incredible deep, worked, and well written. This is a xanxia who has a GOAL ! Each passage has a reason to be, I never read anything unnecessary so far. Every time, it’s extremely important for the continuation of the general story but also for the developpement, the orientation of the MC and other characters. There’s many twists that disturbe the MC’s world and that throw him in a sea of bitter tribulations, pushing his heart and his conscience towards a cliff each time closer. The progression is extemely clear and permit the story to evolve toward its goal. No confusion, nothing can be called “arbitrary”.

The author knows where his story goes and he carries his work confidently towards many profound evolutions and a long wished incredible ending which we have not yet reached.

Bad points :
The new team changed a lot of names. It was a pain in the *** to continue the story with so much new elements. Former chapters should be reissued.
And the format in which the story is posted is of rather poor quality (#forum). It would be nice to be able to repost them on a new platform or find a hosting site like Gravity Tales, Wuxia World or Novel Saga (although I understand if the translator or team prefers to work alone) . <<less

Zhu Xian is a long xianxia novel written by a Chinese author, Xiao Ding, the entire book consisted of 8 volumes. Acclaimed as the 'Later Jin Yong Wuxia Holy Bible' by the Chinese netizens. The story consistently questioned the meaning of 'What is the true/correct way'.

Do I need to say more? For me this novel is quality. I have not enough praise for this novel, the author and the translator. The only downgrade to this that I can find is that the early translation was of low quality, but it... more>> later changes to the current translator who's doing a great job.

As for the story it's not for everyone, it has a bit of tragedy and it has a lot of world building, the descriptions are long, the MC is not some gary stu that never errs, but a human with virtues and flaws.

Some people joke that it isn't a XianXia novel with romance, but a romance novel with XianXia. <<less

Only true Xianxia I’ve read. If you read Ren’s explanation of what Xianxia is, you’d understand that stories like BTTH, ATG, ISSTH, CD, and all of those aren’t really Xianxias, but Extreme Fantasy Xianxias. This one has the roots of Taoism and Buddhism in the story and has a focus of the Evil and Good factions. Probably the closest other Fantasy Xianxia I’ve read was ST, but that thing went major fantasy after the MC became a true practitioner.

A hidden gem.

The first 50 chapters does have some Editing (Grammar errors) but the translation is still pretty good.
Once you get past that annoyance, the story comes alive.

Lots of Xianxia have good sects vs evil sects. But typically this is almost lightly mentioned to create a vessel for the MC to show off his power, and defeat a whole sect of devils/ghost sect members.

This story has much more emphasis on good vs evil. Think of the Starwars.
Internal struggle vs evil, complex romance, philosophical quandaries, light side arrogance,... more>> dark side corruption.

The MC is not OP, and so far the action relies upon the group MC belongs to. (Not typical MC vs noble spoiled child)
The MC feels fresh, not one of the typical MC molds.

But most importantly, I do not know what is going to happen in the next 50 chapters. Is he going to become more evil? Will he change to a different sect?... (Better than knowing that the guy that just called the MC tr*sh will be defeated in 15 chapters, and his elder brother who is an inner sect disciple in 30, and the stuck up greedy master of the elder brother in 60 chapters because there was a tournament at chapter 45.) <<less

I find this book really annoying. Probably not a good book to read you may want to avoid it. The only good things to about say about it is that it is different than other novels of its genre. First I will explain some of the things that may annoy you throughout this book

- this book does what every Chinese and Japanese book always do bye telling the viewers how amazingly beautiful the female leaders... No my mistake every goddamn beautiful girl in the book would be introduce like this.... more>> they usual say the usual cold cold beautiful figure, what beautiful than a flower, white jeans skinny and more.

- horrible horrible appalling God forsaken Romance. In my opinion this book should be cast in the pits of hell just because of the romance.

- that one girl who keeps chasing the MC, which in my opinion has no reason to like him and he has no reason to like her. You'll see what I'm talking about if you read this. I don't know how you would feel but this especially it's really getting on my nerves.

- also very convenient situations in the book <<less

Has a decent plot but too much teenage love drama for anyone to take this seriously. The MC is also really lacking on his part, very weak minded & stubborn to the point of s*upidity.

Feels the author had a good idea of what this story was supposed to do but he executed it poorly by adding to much unnecessary romantic devices and taking too long on developing his MC.

of all xianxia type novels I have read, Zhu Xian is most likely the most well written one.

the MC has ups and downs, and as said before, MC does get subestimated and his teacher doesnt has too much expectations on him, but it is the MC own fault.

The romance aspect is one of the best I have seen, definitely the best in this type of novel, so good that I have cried when reading it. I have no idea who the MC ends up with though : (, and I... more>> wish he would just make a harem and everybody would be happy, but I dont think it will happen.

its worthy a reading, even more so if you got tired of the generic novels. <<less

Review as of “time skip”. Zhu Xian is the basis for the MMORPG game Jade Dynasty which has an English release.

This series evokes images of epics from authors like Louis Cha/Jin Yong, except that the characters can live for hundreds of years after cultivation. It doesn’t have the powers of “breaking the heavens, overturning the mountains, boiling the seas” as seen in other series listed here, but it also doesn’t limit itself to just wuxia.

The setting is the struggle between Good and Evil. Like traditional printed wuxia novels, it has... more>> orthodox and unorthodox sects battling each other, rigid within their own philosophy and irreconcilable to each other. To the reader they are merely just labels, because both factions have their own share of internal conflicts, selfishness and self-righteous attitudes. The Good are often rigid and hypocritical, the Evil are unprincipled and greedy.

It revolves around an orphan who is given the teachings of a passing stranger from one sect, entrusted with a relic from the evil faction, only to be later adopted in by the good faction. It’s a cliche that brings similarities to established fictional characters like Guo Jing (Legend of Condor Heroes) and Linghu Chong (The Proud, Smiling Wanderer), where the MC starts off naive, stubborn, adopted by a strict organization, given secrets considered heretical to the said organization and suffers emotional stress and conflict as a result of being an adopted outsider.

His simple attitude charms women from opposite factions, figures who were used to unwanted attention but were attracted to him because of his guileless behavior. There is a tragic love story in here which can be sorrowful, again reminding me of those printed wuxia novels where multiple loves are star-crossed.

Unfortunately, I decide to drop this series after the plot twist/time skip. The material is decent, but hardly original enough for me to warrant further reading. It is not helped by multiple translators who used different naming conventions, apparently using from both the Chinese source material and the official English translation of the game. As a result you get characters, items, factions, skill moves with two or more names. The initial chapters read like a machine translation. While decent, it does affect my choice in dropping the series. The translation does improve from chapter to chapter, but too slowly for me. Perhaps a devoted reader can find an unpolished gem in this series.

Conclusion: You might enjoy it if you have the time for it. <<less

I have to say, I went a little blind into this story (The synopsis' terrible to be honest), but came out pretty amazed, this is an incredible Xianxia story, translation of the first 60 or so chapters leaves a lot to wish for, huge errors on verbs and alike, the translated naming becomes a little of a pain once it was taken over by the new translator, but Owlhoot's work is simply awesome, definitely between the best translators out there.
This is a story about cultivation, romance, internal politics and... more>> a young boy tasked with huge secrets and burdens. Anyone who likes Xianxia stories should read this.

Synopsis: A terrible calamity fallen onto Zhang Fan, not only becoming one of the three survivors of Grass Temple Village, where everyone else was horribly massacred, he was also tasked to carry one of the most evil artifacts, the Sinister Bead, and taught one of the most secret teachings of the Skysong Sect, the Brahmin Wisdom. This story isn't translated well, the characters are overly pompous, their really s*upid, or, are simply unreasonable. This added into me having the least memorable reading session I have had months. Still I feel that this is the fault of the earlier badly translated chapters; anything that would sound profound ending up sounding interpreted, because of cheng-lish.

In short, the MC is s*upid--say's so himself; almost everyone else is a jerk, and this isn't worth reading, because of the bad translation. 2.9/5.

This is really good. It's just great. The only problem is the arc-games translations f*cks with the names, but it's really not really hard to understand who's who, and Owlhoot's translation is gorgeous.

This story is not standard Xianxia wish fulfillment, it is kinda like wuxia with a focus on magical techniques instead of martial techniques. Read it!

First of all, check if chapter 33-68 is translated yet. If not, you may have to have to read some MTL for like 35 chapters, and these chapters are longer than in most novels. Would not have read this novel if I knew.

This was a good story, truly a descent into darkness a bit reminiscent of when I read Renegade Immortal. However, I really wish I was reading Renegade Immortal right now because this novel just never ends its spiral into madness. And every step of the way is full... more>> of modeled romance drama that never really resolves itself in a satisfactory way.

Tbh even though I am rating this 4 stars, that's just because I can tell its relatively well written. I did not personally enjoy the way the plot went, and I certainly did not enjoy how messy the translation switching is for the first 3 volumes. <<less

Its...70% good stuffs, and the rest are quite... idk, for me, it makes me wants everything to end fast. Its tangled here and there, plus the quite 'always speechless' MC, make me lose interest. The 4 character of the old man, his granddaughter, wild dog and xiao huan (?) part makes me want to skip.

Its human nature to not see the people who really cares for you, like the MC. Man, Jingyu always there for him and yet...*sigh*

But the biggest offset is when an MC went somewhere and always has... more>> a girl with him and he always speechless. It bugged me a lot. <<less

Okay, I started this novel with great expectations and surely this is the best xianxia i've ever read. But the thing is the translator change, ever since the translator changed I feel disconnected. Sure the first one was using MTL and the sentences were broken, but so what I could still understand the feelings and I felt connected to plot. I wondered what would happen and bam the new translator came. Don't misunderstand me guys I'm not saying the new translator is bad or anything but after the name changes... more>> I feel disconnected to the story, I'm like who is who, what's happening, what am I reading this for again. And so on i've dropped a 5 star quality novel. If you do not feel the same way as I do and you think you can handle the translator change go on start this novel it's premium quality I guarantee it <<less

The story is good, but the romance is rubbish. I don't think the writer needs to force the romance in this story because it's actually very, very, very disturbing. If it weren't for this tr*shy romance, the story would be 5 stars. The only romance story that doesn't bother and deals with the growth of the MC is just the girl from the Ghost Sect, Biyao. The rest is annoying tr*sh -_-

I will make it short, this novel have a good character building. Its not perfect, some is strange and seem forced to make the story more interesting. The downside of this novel which make me stop reading is the world building. The world seem too small for such a cultivation world. The novel is too fast paced as the main character always got to conflict. The world seem so complicated but actually too simple, its just a normal old style china novel in the end. Yes the author make the... more>> story much more interesting by the character building and all this interesting plot. But there is many little plot hole scattered in the entire story, not noticeable but annoying for some people like me. Well what you can say? It was an old web novel, the prototype of many cn webnovel to come. Some novel even copy and reference many of the story to this novel, show how much appreciation and the popularity of the story. Maybe in the early days this novel is gold and very much appreciated, but quality improves, and much more detailed story exist now.

It is not perfect, but good for some people to spend time. I gave this story 4 even though I dont really like it, this novel is not for me, but maybe others may like it. Also the translation is quite bad. <<less
