Everlasting disappointment. After such a meticulously crafted, promising 5* beginning, the author decides to go down a very generic, disappointing route. The whole arc revolving around Empress Wa is utterly incomprehensible and senseless garbage. The wise old man suddenly starts acting like the generic, self-righteous, young, naive MC of a third-rate martial arts story. What happened to the all-knowing, wise old man that I enjoyed reading about in the first arc? A great shame.

Although it's a bit early to say something definitive, I've got to say this novel has the potential to be my favorite Xianxia, this novel incorporates 2 concepts, which I love:

1) A genius merchant, someone who can make gold from dirt.
2) Starting to cultivate after his 30's, a experienced and wise old man.

This 2 concepts are nothing exceptional but I swear I thought to make an story with this both scenarios.

About the MC, he's the smartest guy I've seen in a Xianxia, he really feels like an intellectual, he... more>> can turn the tide in any kind of battlefield, has good judgement, knows how to predict people reactions and acts accordingly. The author knows his stuff when he says the MC is renowned tactician, I believe him.

Spoiler

And his cheat is a piece of Go (the game), it's kind of cool, like he has this space with 1, 000, 000 endgames.

My god! What a load of crap these 5 stared reviewers spouted! I admit that upto c165, this novel deserves a maximum 3 star. Maybe if I can be a little flexible, the chapter count can go upto c200. After that it becomes the common (stale) Xuanhuan plot. You come and kill my people, I will do the same. You slap my face, I slap yours etc etc. MC goes and makes enemies out of almost everyone he meets and yet these "enemies" seem to wait till MC becomes stronger.... more>> It's as if they have become s*upid or there is a pact somewhere to deal with mc's people later.

MC has been eulogised by many characters as a cunning and smart person and yet he makes s*upid choices repeatedly. Author even made some excuses for him such as "principled" and "I am not like them". I am 100% sure that 90 percent of the conflicts MC has with other people can be solved after a small discussion over a cup of tea. What I mean by that is for the MC and his enemies have weak reasons to go after one another's throat. World building is crap heck even some of those tr*sh Xuanhuan have much better plot than this.

Now here comes what I think about other side characters. 2 - dimensional, boring as heaven. All of these characters have forced personalities. No flexible minds or whatsoever. All the enemies MC has are s*upid and they are all waiting for MC so that he could kill them.

This novel is a major, major let down. I just don't understand why these freaking authors want to have a macho, all rounded main character for their novels. Why can't they connect their work with reality? Would it kill them? Would it earn them less money if they don't write these self righteous cucks for a mc?! These squinty bastards need to have a life to understand how the world works! <<less

One of my favorites. The MC of this novel has got to be the most intelligent one of all the Chinese novels I have read. It's so amazing that I'm surprised this novel still doesn't have a dedicated translator.

The MC is not the strongest, but he practically outsmarts every cultivator stronger than him with his experience and schemes.

I'd definitely recommend this to people who enjoy reading novels like The Grandmaster Strategist and Ze Tian Ji. Those who enjoy reading novels with wanton slaughter like Martial God Asura or Peerless Martial... more>> God should avoid this. <<less

Now this went downhill fast... the direction this potentially great novel has taken is so bad.

At first it seemed to be a well-written different novel with an actually intelligent MC who outsmarted his enemies in very unexpected ways from a bad position. (5 stars)

Then his (still well written) plans started to have unlikely outcomes but exactly as he planned "because he's a genius". That's just lazy (4 stars)

... more>> He enters a cultivation world with a high status despite low strength. Forced, but promising (4 stars)

The cultivation world is a mix of BTTH and StellarTransformation with many bits stolen from there (external cultivation, ocean+islands, going back to mortal continent to fight cultivators there, snake girl turning snake empress) recycled, boring (3 stars)

One of the 2 characters ALWAYS following MC is supposedly a genius from a small sect who got selected by a bigger sect because of how good he is. HE IS DUMB. and I mean ret*rded. low iq neanderthal. everything he does, everything he says, everything he thinks is naive, ignorant and s*upid beyond belief. this idiot endangers himself and allies ALL THE TIME because he's unable to read ANY situation in the least and cannot predict the most obvious outcome. and from a certain point on, he's in EVERY CHAPTER...... OMG (2 stars) <<less

I kinda read this one on MTL, it is very unique novel, it has great characters, great plot, a well developed MC. This novel is about conquering countries/cities/kingdoms, MC tries to create his own kingdom, I like MC, he's very nice MC, al though the way he plans stuff are sometimes very very scary

Spoiler

there was this very powerful villain that could have crushed the MC like an ant, but MC manipulated him, drove him crazy, in the end made him commit su*cide. Mc's mouth is more scarier than his power

[collapse]

That tragedy tag may put off some people, but don't worry. It's not as you think it is.

Spoiler

al though harems die left and right sometimes lol, I know it's extreme but this world is different, they reincarnate, unless the souls were destroyed which doesn't happen often (it only happens to the extreme villains that MC despises) this is sort of like Dragon Ball

This novel is great at the beginning due to different approach to xianxia such as smart planning and usage of military stratagem for success. However, it becomes cliche and one-dimensional toward the end-story.

The first few volumes brilliantly portrayed the smartness of MC. However, later on, MC rarely comes up with any smart planning. He becomes somebody relying on third party ally, luck, and treasures. On the other hand, he always get tricked by villain (especially when it come to girl-hostage situation).

I wouldn't say he's "dumb" toward the end, but he... more>> isn't smart either. From the building up the story, you'd expect him to come up with some "mind blown" planning to get out of tough situation. However, instead, you get a plot where MC has to bargain with villain OR a plot armor kick in to rescue MC.

Spoiler

MC keep using same methodology that we see in volume 1. Other than this type of planning, MC never excel in anything else. He failed many time to brilliantly rescue his girls and ended up being the loser.

It gets to the point where if MC girls are capture, MC will have to bargain the enemy. He usually follow the bargain and get "reneged promise" by villain. Sometime, he could ended up being lied to by villain many time that it ended up in injury or death of his girls (but... they can be resurrected!) OR some plot armor kicked in to save the day.

Toward the end, you can expect a lot of re-usage of plots. I can't stretch this enough. You'll find a lot of

  • Girls being captured (or her soul is captured)... happened like at least 2~3 times per girl
  • MC always get tricked when bargain with villain (they never keep promise... obviously duh)
  • Same villain keep coming back (lit. being resurrected)
  • Enemies turn into totally loyal allies
  • Friends turn into enemies (I wouldn't say allies, but they are good friends who turn into enemies for not-so-good reasoning)

It's a refreshing take away from the young cultivator as our main character; in this, the cultivator is an old fart with poor innate skills yet is a badass strategist (think: The Grandmaster Strategist, http://www. novelupdates. com/series/the-grandmaster-strategist/) who still believes immortal ascension is possible.

Given the circumstances, will our protagonist ever succeed in cultivating the heavenly dao to perfection?... only a translator can help us unveil the mystery of this magical era.

Like many novels that I review, I feel conflicted regarding my opinion of them. I remember heavily enjoying the first few hundred chapters of this novellast year and putting it on my list to re-visit, which I eventually forgot. After a while, I decided to read this authors new work Above the Skies.

To my suprise, the novel was a bit of a disappointment. Although the world-building was decent, the story seemed to lack any sort of real complexity and there were far too many annoying young masters.

This made me question... more>> whether my taste had changed that much over the year or that perhaps that this wasn't the authors finest work.

After this realization, I decided to re-read EIF and sadly my fear seems to have come true. Although the writting is interesting and the world-building is with merit, this book seems to have one large issue in my opinion.

Again, I should address that this is my personal opinion and you can disagree with it if you like, but to me it seems like... all the characters in the novel are god damn idiots.

I don't know if the author does it to make the protagonist look smart in comparison, but most of the characters in this novel would probably fall on their own swords when trying to tie their shoes.

It's not just the horrendously arrogant young masters that seem to literally spit on people that have higher backgrounds then them. Or even the characters that get their panties in a bunch over the smallest thing and constantly get manipulated. What really kills me are the characters that seem to make decisions to make it more difficult for the protagonist.

I mean I can't count on my two hands the amount of times the protagonist has warned an ally or friend not do something s*upid, only for them to go ahead to do it. Then they just beg the protagonist for forgiveness and the magnimigous saint that is our protagonist doesn't even bat an eye.

I mean every freaking time he warns a friend, you should be ready for them to the opposite. "Oh, did the brilliant protagonist that saved my life a billion times tell me to not touch this sword, guess I gotta touch this sword."

Just... sigh. <<less

Mostly all other CN I read have a brawn for brain MC which act without thinking just to run with their tail between their leg after and wait for miracle dogshitluck or plotarmor kickin. *Stares at Stellar Transformation*

This one is one of the few who have a smart MC. Maybe bc he was a mortal for 70 years, so he use his brain more often than most of those 3rd grade novels MC.

One of my favourite so far since I like that kind of MC. Hope it stays that way... more>> til the end.

IF u like ZeTianJi or similar novel, u will like this too. IF u like those 3rd grade braindead novels, stay away from this novel, rather than had u whining n b*tchin bout how this novel goes. <<less

I enjoy this-sometimes; the problem is that there are too many convenient or lucky circumstances. So far the MC has had everything going his way (even when it seems it's not) and I find myself having to stop reading for a few minutes. What I really had a problem with was how everyone who was not on the MC's side is portrayed. They are basically just there to make the MC look good. They could have been lords of hundreds of thousands of people, but as soon as they face... more>> off against the MC they are made to look like incompetent children. This is, of course, a poor way to make the MC look like a genius, and it shows inexperience. The last thing that bugged me was how the MC quickly went from knowing almost nothing about cultivation to being able to arrange arrays that could defeat people two stages higher than him. It could be that the MT was bad, but that is something to think about. It is so far a decent read, but I had expected much more (not really) after seeing all the 5 stars. <<less

A well executed story with interesting world building that thinly veils the author’s inadequacies of writing intelligent characters. Its a simple power fantasy, but its more based on how smart the MC is. Our MC is basically a genius. The problem with genius MC’s is that they’re limited by the author’s own level of intelligence. In order to make MC look smart authors make every other character seem to be dumber. And that’s the case with this novel. However, I give credit to the interesting paths of cultivation. The novel... more>> is fun to read until you notice that every character seems a bit dumb compared to MC. Still worth some time sink. <<less

Enjoyable read. I really enjoyed this. This novel is unique in its genre (not considering authors other work) . It involves schemes, plans and Influence building. World and character building is good. Every mentioned character has its own use in great plan not like other novels where many characters got forgotten with time. Most importantly ending is decent and clever, its like author considered it from start. Cultivation system is interesting. Also use of Chinese mythical characters are good. It is basically for readers who are in for scheming MC,... more>> mystery and Influence building. <<less

After reading this I shed tears of blood thinking finally a chinese author who actually puts effort and uses his brain to write a good story! Even though there are many plot Armor instances but boy you gotta give author an applause for managing of covering it up with intellect! Main character gets plot Armor and he is smart enough of knowing how to use it. What kind of plot Armor you say? Putting mordern tactics creatively in world of cultivation and make you really feel this is how it... more>> should be there really is no luck he really predicted that far ahead! It's amazing you know! Author doesn't tell you end result and it doesn't end with just MC punching and boom and be done with it, no!!!! Main character sets everything up makes situation turn into his favour and corner his enemies get what he wants and win it! He is mature enough to accept his enemies as his allies and his allies as his enemies unlike normal xianxia where besides the girls in MCs harem and few subordinates whole world is enemy! It's refreshing! I will highly recommend it those guys who thinks normal xianxia MCs as nothing but idiots or hotspot for luck and want something new. Wars are really good, till now there is no romance but smells like it will be great too! Unlike normal xianxia where MC just r*pes whatever women and she falls for him! Go ahead and try it! <<less

A good novel, enjoyable read. It involves chess, plans and schemes. Quick paced and not many chapters where you will feel bored. The protagonist is too lucky but it does not spoil the novel rather makes it more interesting. Also involves love and tragedy. The cultivation system is interesting, a little confusing in the beginning though. The concept of three immortal souls and seven mortal forms was good. The ending felt rushed but it could have been boring if not for the rush.

It's bad. I read through volume 1 and by the end I was skipping chapters like crazy. I came in with low expectation since I read and dropped Immortal (another book by the author) and yeah, it matched my expectation. The story setup is poor at best, the motivation of the MC is weak, the plot is thin and narration is terrible. Since the author intended the MC to be this genius strategist, he had to basically break down what the MC does play by play. Its very tell and... more>> not show. Every time the MC did something, you get a wall of text explaining it and the side characters always react in awe. Repeat that for 60 chapters and you get the first volume. There is no character building, the MC feels hollow, the side characters are nonexistent, no world building, nothing. The first volume thrust you into two major arc without a proper foundation and you just feel like "why do I care about anything that is going on?". It's hard to feel invested when you are thrust into the middle of the action. Overall, a very poorly written novel. <<less

(I suddenly realized I neglected to update my review a while ago, despite it being very out-of-date)

I recommend reading Chronicles of Gu Hai first, it's the prequel which explains some of the setup to this story and it's relatively short, but quite good. The ending part of it feels fairly rushed, but I think the author is still covering up some of the important events there which haven't been explained even at ch189 of THIS story. The first portion is completely about grand strategy in a conflict between... more>> two kingdoms, it has practically nothing to do with Xianxia at all. But it's actually really good! It does a fantastic job of setting up the protagonist and how fearsome his head for strategy is!

After that segment, he properly becomes a Xiantian cultivator and the story proper begins to unfold. His incredible knowledge of strategy and comprehension of human psychology never ceases playing an important role in the story, largely setting this apart from other Xianxias (or nearly any other stories at all). One of the more interesting things is that the protagonist is NOT young. Despite these stories being about people trying to attain immortality and living hundreds or thousands of years, they almost always start with teenage protagonists (which is weird IMO). He's a seventy year old man with a wealth of life experience and an extremely interesting and mature perspective.

I HIGHLY recommend this story.

(Not sure why the release schedule has gotten so slow but after a nearly 6-month drought, suddenly a new chapter was released 3 days ago! Hope for the future~) <<less

Good story, high potential to be crown as a new chinese light novel. Character development for MC have been fixed and power up is also in order. A bit similar to immortal (light novel also) but it's not boring. It's worth to read and be invested in.
