I used to be a human girl, I can’t recall my name nor how I looked. All because I’ve turned into a dragon. What’s more, in a certain kingdom I am considered a sacred dragon. My diet consists of humans. It seems that after eating a human, that human’s magical power is what sustains me.

I’m a type of dragon called an “Earth Dragon”, which for generations have formed contracts with humans in a certain kingdom, leading that kingdom to victory in wars against other kingdoms. I don’t care about that any of that. I just want to live in peace. However before long my human eating escapades branded me as a “man-eating dragon”.

Growing tired of killing those sent to vanquish me, I decided to entered human society, I ending up serving in the castle, where tasty looking humans abounded.

2/5 (Gave it an extra point for the fluffy.)

It's a neat premise but the inconsistencies and extremely cliche love story ruined it for me.

Basically a moron gets reincarnated as a dragon. Biggest annoyance is that the author can't pin down how much common sense/memory the dragon has in various situations. One moment she's decently competent, the next she derps out completely.

1) She has plenty of past life memories, to the point where she can work out that eating humans --> subjugation party --> knights. And even work out a... more>> plan of action.

But the next moment she derps out completely and fumbles her secrets away left and right to everybody. (cleric, witch, probably even the captain).

2) She has no guilt eating humans wholesale & even burning them to a crisp. The next moment she has guilt about not entering a s*ave contract to save a country she isn't even a part of. Wut?

3) She basically learns she can use magic (shapeshifting, regeneration) even making a grand connection between her food source and her shapeshifting.... then does absolutely nothing to figure out more about her powers. Derp. Failure on numerous levels. (She should've at least had some memories that dragons are hunted/killed.... in fact people tell her straight up that some of the past earth dragons were KILLED. In fact she even gets blindsided several times in the story. Derp.)

Inevitably coming to bite her in the rear around 20 chapters in... and of course she completely forget about her shapeshifting powers. Derp. <<less

Dragon Life follows its genre tags fairly close: Fantasy, Romance, Shoujo.

Take what I say with a grain of salt, because I stopped after chapter 26. The initial concept was interesting, and the dialogue was at its best in the beginning. It swiftly takes all the benefits of a high-fantasy setting and throws them out the window for a slice-of-life, medieval shoujo. Honestly, I can work with this.. But the writing just is not there.

A lot of the interaction lack basic reasoning (mild spoilers). A raven back talking a dragon it... more>> just met, even though it warned its companion about the ferocity of dragons. A low class maid with a stomach ache being escorted by the prince to a legendary cleric for healing. Woman roars like a dragon at a soldier *five seconds later* soldier attacks woman for ignoring him. Carrying an injure animal, immediately spots a cabin in the woods, happens to have a legendary healer. We have a meeting in the woods with a country well known for backhanded dealing and general trickery. We will only bring our key military figures and the crown prince; it's probably a trap, but we don't feel like doing anything about it.

Either this author is going to pull something brilliant out, or he is simply bad

Frankly, the romance progression is terrible. It goes from 10 to 100% instantly, and romantic interest is also just creepy. I have nothing else to say on that. He is creepy.

The character is essential a Mary Sue with an identity crisis. The author can not make a character with common sense and reasoning as of chapter 26. <<less

Reviewed at ch25:
A girl from modern Japan wakes in the body of a man-eating dragon in some medieval alternate reality. Disguising herself as a human girl, she interacts with the local populace where she makes friends and a potential love interest, while trying to avoid the glory and duty of becoming assisting the country in its war as a legendary dragon.

The female lead is a dragon with a human conscience who adapts remarkably well to her new circumstances, although she occasionally struggles between identifying humans as friends or... more>> food (until she gets hungry). While the male lead is an airhead knight with a love for dragons and would willingly present himself on a silver platter for the MC to eat if she asked (he kind of does, only he didn’t have time to prepare the platter). His hair is kinda weird though.

The story is quite creative and very cute, with a sensible MC who sometimes loses to her dragon instincts, especially around dinner time. The humour is very well done, while the female lead is very believable and somewhat relatable. The ditsy male lead and the romance are still in its beginning stages, and hopefully as they interact more, his character and their relationship will be give more depth.

Overall it’s very enjoyable, very funny and has the potential to develop into something epic (if they go into battle... which they will since he'll honey trap her into it) although it’s still good if it follows its current tone. <<less

Ehm... my first review. As of chapter 28, I believe that this novel caught me with hook, line, and sinker (did I say that right?) I've always loved dragons for one, the main reason why I even picked up this novel. But...

Oh la la~

The romance caught me off guard. You see, of the many things I've read, the most I do is smirk or smile or cringe or no reaction at all from anything tagged romance, but this one is one of the few that made me squeel with... more>> delight (thank god I was alone at home in 'that' chapter).

Still, the translated part is too few so who knows if it will keep up to my expectations. Just that, I really-really-really recommend this one to anyone wanting a real dose of sugar in their boring life.

Author-sama and Translator/s-sama, thank you for making this story available to me! <<less

If you enjoy watching from the sidelines as a small child is led to a van by a middle aged man, then driven away only to receive videos in the mail of that child being mentally abused over and over again... then this novel is for you. oh, this was all metaphorical. I KNOW the character is a dragon, but with that level of common sense I wonder sometimes. Most of the time she is OBVIOUSLY being manipulated yet instead of resist or deny she allows herself to fall further... more>> and further from her own will. It's honestly like an intervention, but one held by a mysterious entity (yes I know what it is, but that would be a spoiler) instead of family and friends. I don't care if at the end of the novel the dragon/person/whatever ends up "happy"... The bad ends of netorare depict the victim as eventually being "happy" as well, but that person is a best a mere shadow of their initial selves... much like our dragon heroine by chapter 38. Which is incidentally the chapter where my patience ran out and I dropped this series. <<less

TLDR; Beginning is great, then gets average, finally becomes badly-written cliche tr*sh.

SPOILERS!!!

The start of this was fun to read, I mean a Dragon who actually acts like one is always a plus in my books. The switch into more heavy Shoujo tropes with the castle arc was good as well as I'm a big fan of romance and the light mystery elements were fun. The hallucination BS was painful though and the MC occasionally acting like a ditz for no reason where she acted intlligently to begin with was similarly... more>> hard to read. What killed it for me was the contract and demon reveal part. Any good will this story built up in its first part was wasted when the MC just randomly compromises all her ideals for the sake of plot and bad writing. Also Demons as the big bad after the emperor. The writing gets noticeably worse with characters falling into the 'LOL I have no interest in anything but helping the MC or being excessively evil but also ret*rded', it got too painful to read at the 50 chapters mark. Save yourself the disappointment and don't touch this. <<less

Starts nice, has a great premise and first 15 or so chapters were pretty fun, but after that started going down and now around chapter 25 it is just generic shoujo romance.
I'll probably check it again in future to see how it goes thanks to the premise, but right now there is nothing to keep me reading.

I am a massive fan of the premise. I am biased, though, anything involving non-human MCs is great, anything with dragon MCs is fantastic. If you are like me, which is unlikely, you would have preferred that the MC never learned a human form, but alas.

Despite that, the plot, although somewhat cliché fairly often, is relatively good. At least for most of the first act. The very last chapter would have been a little disappointing even if there had not been a second arc... Unfortunately there is a second arc,... more>> and it completely ruins everything interesting about the plot.

I am not sure many people who stuck through the first arc enjoyed the second at all as it completely discards the most important part of the story that drew me in, and likely others:

THE DRAGON PART

In short, I recommend the first arc for those who are interested in the premise, just know it does get a little less about the main premise as the story progresses, even before the dreaded 2nd arc, but it was survivable until then. The 1st arc ends on:

(As an addendum, thank you to all the translators, they made the ride all the more enjoyable.) <<less

The beginning starts off fairly interesting: man-eating dragon starts picking up fragmented memories of a past-life as a naive 16 year old girl. The dynamic between being a lovable unrepentant cannibal and suddenly having a human's moral consciousness if quite enjoyable, and it's definitely not something you see often. Unfortunately, the author starts moving the story in a direction that's very much expected (since he lays the groundwork for romance, moral dilemmas, and the question of freedom vs responsibility very early on) but I'd say that other readers and I... more>> were pretty disappointed by it. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad direction to take it, but it's... less interesting. All these themes are pretty common in other stories and the reason Dragon Life had its own charm in the first place was because it set itself apart from the others. The author has decent writing and a hefty amount of innuendos mixed it (which can be a lot of fun to read), but unfortunately that doesn't shine through as much with recent developments. I would recommend this, but I can't help but say I'm a little disappointed. <<less

Look, I know I'm biased. If I could bear to look at it critically, the pacing and story stagnate in the second half and should probably bring down my rating. But I love the ridiculous concept so much that I'm still hype when there's an update.

The guy is F*cking nuts. Absolutely bonkers.

The MC pretends not to notice anything that could mildly inconvenience her emotionally. On the one hand, what a mood. On the other, it's frustrating sometimes and frequently prevents plot or character progression. <<less

Great story, it's plot is the developing type which means the author took time to preplan the story arcs. It has good living characters that express their unreasonable emotions. This is a tasty story and I recommend it.

A very amusing story; whenever her more dragon-like traits come out in the narration, it always makes me laugh. The emotional developments are gradual, but have impact in the long run.

As many people have said, the initial concept is great. Person turns into dragon, eats people for food, doesn't care about morals, and then struggles coming to terms with that since she remembers being human herself. Then goes undercover as one of the very people she ate. Cool. Then it turns into a typical shoujo romance fantasy plot. Ok. That's not all that bad. For like a solid 50-60% of the story, that's the general summary of it, but then once

I'm not really sure what it is, but something about the style of writing really throws me off. I've finished off quite a few ln/wn's recently from amazing novels that I will never forget to mediocre garbage that I couldn't remember beyond the next page, but I still felt compelled to stick with them to at least find out how it all ends (or like most abruptly stop at a high note leaving me craving more yet never deliver). Here however for some reason I find my self frankly not... more>> caring. The story is actually interesting to me even with the constant contradictions of our MC Dragon that goes between being guilty and talking about how delicious humans are and whishy-washy actions and inconsistent ability to recall her past life. But that isn't really my problem with this novel, its that the way its written is unbelievably redundant. The characters internal thought monologue, for example when she is scared by something, I can tell because she ran away and is thus hiding from the issue, I don't need a 2 chapter long monologue about how she is scared and how she came to that conclusion. It came to a point where I just found it quite painful to keep reading, despite my desire to find out what happens next, I don't care enough to suffer through this mediocre repetition of borish monologues that accomplish nothing and contribute nothing. So unfortunately for those interested while I can say the premise might intrigue you, understand that the writing style is a bit well... unfortunate. Shame really. <<less

1/10, cliche love stories, bad writing midways.

The story at first was unique, but from ch 20 onwards it become a cliche love story where an indecisive girl fall in love with a dragon knight.

Moreover the writing style is bad as the author tend to put as many sentences as possible without actual story progression. Theres no way someone could think a 2 pages thought in 5 seconds only.

Very funny. Very interesting. I love how the MC is not the usual where justice is everything and whatnot. If she's hungry, she'll eat. Who cares. Well, she has conscience but she can't help it which is very cute. She's also not the type of fragile-girly-oh-no-help-me person. The male lead is also extremely adorable thing!! I repeat, adorable! I ship them~ I hope to read more of this kind of story! Awesomeness.

It’s a shame that the original author abandoned this fascinating story. You could pretend that chapter 58 is the end and just stop there. I enjoyed the world building and the balance of intensity and lightness.

Spoiler

There is some additional character growth and explanation of the mysteries and legends of this fantasy world after that point. So I read until chapter 91, and just pretended that the “next battle” didn’t happen. It was nice to hear that our dragon heroine was never forgotten by that world (for her sacrifice), her friends, and of course the romantic interest.

At first it may seem that all this novel is about is fluffiness. And I mean, it really has that. But, if you keep reading, you'll find out that the most interesting thing is how itoka or Vito thinks

I don't know, just think the conflict between her dragon and human part is what it makes it so enjoyable
