Liu Ming, since he was young, lived in a savage prison named Savage Island where the prisoners aren’t controlled by any guard or security. When the island sinks due to “mysterious” events, only a handful of people survive – those survivors are then pursued by the government.

On the other hand at another place, two practitioners are worrying about what will happen to them because the young master that they were supposed to protect had died.

Their young master just so happens to look nearly like our hero…

What will happen? Where will Liu Ming ends up and what will he do?

Normally don't review this early, but I'll update it as I read.

First few chapters I almost gave up on this novel, but it picks up at chapter 5. I'd encourage anyone like me who wasn't feeling this novel in first four chapters to at least read until 6.

Stays pretty interesting throughout. Don't miss out on this novel.

So, I finished reading this novel just a moment ago on machine-translated chapters (even though I only scroll through or skipped the chapters near the end of the story, around ch. 1300 - 1549, and then again I start to seriously read ch 1500 - 1552). So, I'll just put spoiler tag to it in case I write too much and spoil the fun for those who don't want a spoiler :D.

Spoiler

The story starts off interesting with a good background with MC being an escapee from a savage island, where from there we know that the MC has a good survivability skill and a mutation skill that makes him able to dual-task. The MC will use this dual-skill at the beginning of the story and then slowly this skill will be forgotten in the future and only mentioned again one time in a later chapter.

Sadly, MC's background from the savage island also isn't well developed as it only described a few times in later chapters and basically hold no significant effect on how the story progress.

What's good about this novel is the side-character and supporting ones were not as dumb as characters on other xianxias (although some of them will be just forgotten in time. Yes, even the ones that had good potentials such as the one with Earth Spiritual Pulse, he was never mentioned again in the later chapters). But, while most of the side and supporting characters are well-written, the main characters such as the MC and his potential lovers are... disappointing.

MC was basically described as a low-key person but sometimes he can't be a low-key person (;¬_¬). Sometimes he can be a smart person while sometimes not. While the potential lovers were well-introduced at first, later on, it feels like they were just simply plain, like the author was just writing them as side characters or even just supporting characters. As someone who likes romance stuff, I can say that the romance in this novel is simply not satisfactory. Well, it's not 'all girls will fall for MC' but still half of them will, AND only a quarter of those that fall for him will end up with him. Imagining those broken-hearted girls I can only smile bitterly. You who says that the romance is not that bad and you haven't finished the novel means you must cherish what you just read, because if I'm not wrong, one girl at most have only one sweet moment, and later on she will be a plain character, trust me ;D. P.S. Not all girl even get that one chance to have a sweet moment (T - T). I'm seriously left disappointed in romance aspect.

The pacing at the start is nice and good but will become so slow (especially around Crystal Stage) until MC reaches True Core Realm. And after MC got to Heaven Imitation Realm, he got powered up like crazy in just about 100 chapters. These 100+ chapters he will get powered up by 2 big realms.

I don't know if it's just me or what, but later on the story, I feel like 'talent' in this novel is messed up. At the end of the story, the cultivation speed of a 'supposed to be genius' like Ye Tianmei only differ a little with adopted little sister of MC (Qian Ruping) who is supposed to be only 6 spiritual veins. And place in the story makes cultivating speed differ by FAR F A R F A R F A R. An Earth Spiritual Pulse in the first continent can't even compare to an outer sect disciple of Midheaven Continent.

BIG SPOILER ALERT!! (romance ending)

Spoiler

A reminder for you who loves and seeks romance, this novel may not satisfy your needs and expectation. There were some sweet moments but most of the time the romance will just be there out of the blue! It's still acceptable if it's just that, but out of the 5 girls that I like (YT, JL, YJ, ZQ, ZX), only 2 (YT and JL) ended up as his wives (He will only have 2 wives). I am disappointed as I prefer YJ and ZQ over YT and JL. Out of the 5, JL is my least favorite girl and out of the 5, I feel like ZX (Heaveanly Moon Sect girl, Zhang Xiuniang) moment was the most romantic as MC multiple times (7 times exactly) becomes her most intimate person in her dream (She enters a dreamland because of an insect). Sadly, ZX and MC was never meant to be in this story, poor ZX : (. Other girls were basically dumped by the MC in an indirect way of the MC running away from their feelings and often shift the topics.

The story's quite good. It's not your typical Xianxia novels with the underestimated/ crippled MC who becomes OP and ruthless after having bitter struggles, fighting one scumbag to the next and making out with pretty harem members in each place he visits (*insert amused laughter over the generic Xianxia story line).

Although lacking in humor since the MC is sorta the serious and hard-working type but it really focuses much on his adventures and the diverse plots are exciting.

Initial impressions as of Ch.73.

70 chapters in and still initial impressions? Yes, because it's very, very slow paced. It's because the author is the type that can write multiple continuous chapters about cultivating. Putting the dreary stuff aside (at least for me, I know there are readers who enjoy reading about the 'process'), it has an interesting premise that sets up a lot of intrigue for future plot development. An escapee from a hellish prison island, the MC was fortuitously picked up by two cultivators who were looking for a... more>> way out of their own predicament. Their charge was unexpectedly killed and they decided to use the MC as a stand in for him to be sent to a distant sect.

Thus Liu Ming the prisoner became Bai Cong Tian, young master of the Bai clan and now, acolyte of the Barbarian Ghost Sect. To complicate the story even more, Liu Ming's own background is murky and shadowed by elements of conspiracy that had killed his father.

Thus far 70 chapters in the story is quite basic xianxia, typical of the genre. Much of the story is about entering the sect, going through the tests, getting contribution points and cultivating. Combat is descriptive and a little different as it has more on spiritual energy and taming of beasts/monsters. The writing is decent, but the story is quite dry as the author stretches the mundane quite a lot. Characters introduced aren't given much depth yet.

Decent, but not really memorable as yet. <<less

Fairly good novel, the writing style is similar to RMJI (same author), so if you liked RMJI you will like this one.

The story development is well planned, with minimal plot hole, the transition from arc to arc is natural.

MC is neither OP nor UP.

Spoiler

MC's ass is on fire, he is always on the run for cultivation resource and with a good reason, since if he doesn't upgrade his cultivation level he will die due to his cheat.

[collapse]

One of the main point that makes this novel likeable, is the lack of crowd, rarely the MC fight in-front of a crowd, and even if he does, they aren't here to tell how awesome the MC is.

as for the bad point:

Some arc tend to get to your nerve (for me), while other are kind of shallow and somehow rushed.

Romance:

Spoiler

while the MC has 2 wife (and another one playing the tsunder game), there are very little interaction between them, even the time spend with them is very little, (around like a year before he ascend, never to meet them again) it doesn't even come close to bad romance.

So far it's a good novel, the MC personality is good, he is low key and hiddes his trumph cards. Even if he's strong for his level he's not overly OP. Also the amount of different skills and weapons used on the novel are way broader than your typical xianxia novel, which gives it a refreshing taste, although it might also make some fights confusing.

It had a great start but as chapter's go on it becomes boring. The MC is introduced as a kick ass character and from the moment he joins the sect he will become a joke of MC with very little fights, and the author tries to make the MC as low key as possible it starts to hurt the reader. I am a person who is rational and I do not want a novel where MC kills anyone who messes with him but this has very few moments you fell... more>> the MC is awesome.

The author tries very hard to make the side characters as awesome as possible and you start feeling that whether MC is the true MC or the side characters are the true MC. <<less

To add and repeat to some of the other reviews for this novel i'll also say that it's a decent novel if not bland. MC is almost as boring as the MC from Dominating Sword Immortal and he's pretty damn boring.

Now the romance? Harem? Refer to above, it's bland and boring. MC tries to avoid everything related to women, and when there is something he shrugs and goes "Meh ok"

Now what is important to me atleast, is that after chapter 800, I really felt the novel starting to go downhill and starting to degrade, it's kinda hard to explain but if you binge read it, I think most people would notice aswell... The author also kinda starts throwing away a bit of what made the MC different/special and he kinda becomes the standard Xianxia MC type, not that he loses all that made him special atleast.

Gonna mention the deal breaker for me next up so spoil at ur own risk.

Spoiler

What really ruined this novel for me happens at chapter 1250. What happens is that the MC is preparing to breakthrough the next realm, so he has been collecting stuff to help him breakthrough - but his % of succeeding is still pretty low and he would never try to breakthrough normally.. Now suddenly he hears the news that X chick he met in a secret realm, that he had s*x with due to some circumstances where they weren't in control of themselves, then never talked to after that point (like at chapter 600) and she is suddenly in danger... Now what does Liu Ming/MC do?! Of course he's the usual cool headed guy we all have known for the last 1250 chapters that wont act unless he's atleast sure he has some chance / huge payout, or he's atleast forced to have no choice but to risk it all cause he's forced into a corner, not to mention atleast gather plenty of intelligence.. right?! Well, haha screw 1250 chapters let's have the MC breakthrough with 30-40% chance (Sounds like a lot, hint hint its really not) He fails obviously, with a pretty big chance of his cultivation future being ruined.. But Bam! Plot armor! All this happens just to force the plot a bit and introduce a new guy that also just so happens to be able to save his ability to cultivate in the future.. Man this whole part made me want to drop the novel right then and there. It felt so braindead and I still cant belive the author did it..

But guess what, what awaits you is a poor finish to a buildup and plot that the author probably had planned differently, but the whole ending was pretty rushed and it kinda just ended in a whole mix of useless chapters of MC saving the beauty and lots of characters and wars etc that is hardly relevant and follows the trend in the later part of the novel of having useless chapters written about other characters.. Just to end this with a loose and hardly satisfying ending..

[collapse]

So in terms of total rating i'd give it 3, being pretty average. Volume based i'd say 4 for volume 1-8, I'd rate it 3 after that and after chapter 1250 i'd rate it 2 as it felt super dreary in the later chapters and I ended up skipping a lot of it sadly.. In the end this is personal and others might find it interesting but as mentioned, it does feel really rushed towards the end, ruining an otherwise decent novel.

If I had to describe this novel in one word it would be dry

I'm at Ch 265 and so far not a single scene has stirred up any emotion in me. The way this is told is more a like to a report of some kind than an actual story. The MC is obviously on the boring side and has no friends and no real over arching goal or any sort of base motivation other than just get strong for no apparent reason but he is calculating and strong and... more>> the story does progress albeit at a slow pace. Personally wouldn't recommend reading this if you have other things to read but it is passable <<less

All treasures which are worthy of being called treasures will fall into the hands of Liu Ming. So will the most outstanding cultivation techniques. No one is worthy to be compared to him. In any case, he is possessed by a demonic being of outstanding power, so what if the enemy is stronger? The demon will pop up, and the enemy shall be no more.

The world will shove Liu Ming onto a pedestal, at the expense of our intelligence. There is nothing enjoyable about reading the rise of someone’s power... more>> when the process is clearly fabricated.

I wanted to like this novel, there is plenty of good stuff in there: bloodthirsty mermaids, nasty demons, scorpion ghosts, flying swords, and an abundance of cultivation techniques. But the luck of the protagonist makes me very tired.

Don’t get me started on character development, because there is none: Liu Ming has the best possible temperament to thrive in the cultivation world, so why would he change? <<less

Great novel! It is one of the best currently translating novels. MC reminds me of Meng Hao. Story has good action, writing style is good, pacing is great (by chapter 156 a lot happened already and some hints for future were shown), other characters other than MC show some personality. Some comment said that it was similar to World Of Cultivation... I do not like World Of Cultivation much, but I do like this one. Dark, Deep, a worthy read.

An escapee from the martial world (Jianghu) due to chance, embark the road of immortal (devil) cultivation.

Good read, Good MC development. MC was smart, cautious and calculative at times. He was truly exceptional. He has things that other MC from other novel lack.

... more>> BUT, However, this novel is seriously lacking at the side character development side. I dont know if its just me but I somehow cant remember some character sometimes, they seriously lack presence and appear then dissappear just like that.

Thats the only downside that keep this novel from reaching 5/5

Anyway their is more chapter in the future, hope some changes happen. <<less

I rather liked the novel, until it reached the last part. Because of that I give it 3 stars.

There are no obnoxious second generation who continuously appear to create trouble for MC and almost no people who just want the room or seat MC has taken in a restaurant (the last thing does happen twice if I remember correctly, but are just small episodes).

MC has a lot of luck in finding treasures, but which MC in cultivation novels doesn't.

MC is constantly underestimated by people from his own sect because he... more>> has 3 spiritual pulses, which is the lowest talent someone can have. They continuously think he won't be able to improve his cultivation to the next level even when he becomes the strongest disciple in his own rank. This is until he has done a lot for the sect and an elder accepts to become his master (who didn't want to accept him for a long time) later on and other people from the sect regret not taking him in when he continues to grow. This happens in both sects. He doesn't get a lot of support from his sects even after becoming first in contests.

MC is a loner and does not talk a lot. Most of the time he goes out alone. Everywhere he goes he tries to stay under the radar as much as possible, but does go after treasures he wants when he meets them.

He is overpowered in the sense that he can fight others who are above his level, but he is never the strongest in his area. There are always stronger cultivators.

Spoiler

MC decides to practice pill making when he is locked up inside the treasure he got that swallows his Fa Li (Qi). In there the medicine he needs for making the pills are automatically replaced once they are used up. He is not naturally talented in pill making, but thanks to being able to make hundreds of attempts in making the pills, he finally learns how to do it.

He decides to sell them outside of the sect. And even there disguises himself when selling them. At first I wondered why he did not show his sect why he could make pills, but then later on it is mentioned he is afraid of the sect letting him only make pills and stopping his progress in cultivation (which he needs to keep up with the swallowing of Fa Li and life force by said treasure). He only makes pills he can use himself for his own cultivation.

[collapse]

It has a harem tag, but he only creates his harem in the last few chapters. There are several women who like him and whom he likes as well, but they don't all become a part of his harem.

Spoiler

Ironically, the 2 women he sleeps with in the novel don't become part of his harem.

He gets 3 women in his harem, all 3 coming from the sea area where MC grew up and started his cultivation journey. MC only lives with them for 2 or 3 years before ascending to the upper realm and leaving them and 2 newborn children behind.

[collapse]

MC ends up on other continents by accident through space cracks and other means an awful lot of times. Partially because of this he spends little time in the Tianxin sect which he later joins.

I found it kinda sad that he felt the most at home when he stayed with the Qin family on the demon continent.

I personally didn't really like the last part on the demon continent and what came after.

Spoiler

Later on MC makes an agreement with the spirit of his treasure, that it will no longer swallow his Fa Li. In return MC will not be able to enter it's internal space to practice. I don't understand why the spirit would not limit the intake of Fa Li so that it would not kill it's owner. It might be because the spirit was unconscious but this is never really explained well.

It is also sad that when MC returns to his sect after he became an immortal and saves humanity from an invasion by the insects and Yao Ji he is betrayed by them (even his own sect).

They try to imprison him because he used demonisation to beat one of the immortal invaders. They want to pry his secrets from him to improve their own cultivation.

The same thing happened to the immortal who saved humanity hundreds of thousands of years ago. I guess the body parts MC met in the beginning came from this person.

[collapse]

The novel ends with MC ascending to the upper world and a short conversation of the women he met and had been interested in when they see the signs of his ascension.

I would have liked to see how he is doing in the upper realm, but we don't get to see that.

Overall a nice novel, but not one I would read again, which I do with novels I really like. <<less

The story is one of the most refreshing ones.
    • The Author doesn't go for cliches. For real.
    • You would see refreshing story lines and characters.
    • The cultivation is decently paced.
    • The MC is
        • Smart/cunning. Doesn't make dumb decisions. Doesn't take the initiative to kill but doesn't leave anyone if somebody tries to kill him.
        • Is very straight forward. Very few people can actually force him to do anything.
        • Doesn't like to leave the control of his life in other people's hands. In fact, he is okay with mutual destruction than living under somebody's thumb.
        • really humble and modest. Doesn't look to attract attention but isn't too secretive to loose a chance to get resources from the sect.
    • There are a lot many spells/techniques the MC learns. Most of them are something that become mute later on but MC keeps acquiring new skills and uses them wonderfully in battles.
    • The "Villains" are not your cliche ones. They have their own sides and in fact, most of the times, they are just fighting for what they believe in and are not much different from other characters. The young master troupe is literally non-existant and any friction that the characters have with MC is logical and most of the times is resolved sensibly.
    • This author really knows what it means to say that only a small number of people go from one realm/stage of cultivation to another. Unlike other novels, here many people might be stagnated in their own realms without any chance to advance.
    • Apart from a few instances, most of the time, the author does a lot of time skips to make sure that the MC doesn't encounter legendary/weird stuff simply because he is MC. Obviously, the latter still holds but the skips make it more believable.
    • As shown in the synopsis, the MC has a secret background. Since, he is from a very remote location, the background is revealed pretty quickly in the story. Some readers may not like it, but I feel this makes the story much more believable. Also, there are still some other aspects that are revealed later.
Now some cons:

    • The first and major con is translation. Till 280 something chapters the translation was very good. But then it suddenly changes. After that, it got better around 350-400ish chapters. But here and there the translators might be changing as they used different nouns to describe things like name of cultivation stage etc. After 1000, the translation quality dips a lot more and it is better to wait for other translators to translate. I have stopped reading at around 1300ish chapter because here the translation is simply unacceptable.
    • The MC doesn't focus on Romance which is fine. But as mentioned, there is late-romance tag and harem tag. So, obviously things happen but the MC is weird in Romance. The Harem also feels forced. Apart from the main girl, the rest are literally forced.
      Spoiler

For instance, there is this girl he is kind of in "love" with. Okay, he may have some affection for her but considering that he doesn't care about anyone else at all. The difference speaks volumes. Anyways, he loves this girl (who is in the same sect) and then during a battle he suddenly disappears. He returns to the sect after hundreds of years and doesn't even go to her once to meet and alleviate her worries.

      [collapse]
    • Since, the story is very big, there are obviously high and lows. There are some patterns that emerge from many arcs. It may be monotonous for some readers. Read the spoiler if you want to know what I mean by monotous
      Spoiler

The MC is either doing things on his own which is missions/gathering/fighting/training etc. Which is the most interesting part. The rest is either the MC is fighting in a war or the MC is in a competition of sorts. This happens a lot of times. Although, each competition is different it is still a little boring.

      [collapse]
    • The descriptions of attacks are mostly pointless. However, this is something intrinsic to chinese novels, so yeah.
    • MC's motivation for cultivation isn't too clear apart from trying to save his life. As usual, the MC does have something special but it forces him to cultivate quickly otherwise he will die. Apart from that, the MC does other things because of some promises.
      Spoiler

Specifically, he has a treasure inside him that helps him cultivate a little better/faster but it takes a lot of energy periodically and the demand increases exponentially every time it activates. This forces the MC to keep increases in cultivation. The other thing is the MC sometimes makes oaths with some entities in exchange for benefits/his own life.

Slow burner. It feels like one of the games where you're grinding at different intervals of this journey with the MC, and the pay-off is worth it. Clever MC with minimal plot armor. Circumstantial hero, if there is nothing in it for him, he keeps it moving. Just an awesome read. (I sucks at this, but I love this novel enough to write this.)

Okay so I have seen a lot of reviews saying that it is boring. And that the MC doesn't do anything and that there isn't a plot.

These are monkey brains who have probably never read an actual novel in their entire life and love the same old xanxia where the MC starts a fight every 3 chapters because being a confrontational as*hole is somehow ideal to them.

This novel has great characters, a deep plot that extends throughout the story. Setups and payoffs don't happen within 10 chapters of each other.... more>> The MC is careful and thoughtful about his actions and isn't handed everything on a golden platter, he isn't the chosen one with perfect talent and also the best artifacts. He has good stuff and he is powerful but it isn't due to the world's greatest luck where everything falls into his lap.

Don't bother picking it up if you have a monkey brain and always skip all dialog in games. Otherwise it is a good deep novel.

The translation does become ass after a while though which means reading it is an ordeal on its own. <<less

Wonderful novel.

what pains me is that the most liked reply is from a tard who is simply the ultimate contrarian. He has this and reverend insanity as 1 stars and martial god asura (the objectively shittiest novel to ever be written) as 5 stars. Such a disgusting failure in their formation of opinions renders any opinion they might have invalid. If I were king of the world he would be given a 20 years in jail.
