The Second Coming of Gluttony

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

Here's the TLDR of some of the things to watch out for when reading the novel.
    • First, the expedition economy is poorly thought out - A leader is responsible for researching, recruiting paying in advance to those recruits, paying food in advance, investigating the mission, making decisions and strategies on the fly as well as personal combat in confrontations. A porter is responsible for carrying large volumes of loot. Not fighting or anything else. Apparently, we're to assume not only do porters receive an equal share of the payment but also a fair say in all discussion about the mission.
    • Second, democracy has meaning in the wild? - No, it does not. Why do you even have leaders if every decision they make can be overturned on a vote? At one point the main character senses danger. He says they should leave and return, but his group of inexperienced, greedy companions decides with a vote, "brave danger." The main character and the gang almost die because of this.
    • Third, what is the motivation of the summoned and the reason to make this a job? - OK, so let's see if we can get this straight. The majority of summons are easy "s*ave-level" contracts. Corporations are willing to spend many millions upon millions for the sake of paying off debts to have a contract signed. So they thought warping in literal s*aves would be a good idea for saving that world. And why do they bother using s*ave labor? They can't mine gold and bring it back to Earth (without using mass levels of Achievement points, which they have little and should use rarely) They can only use it in the otherworld economy. The only thing they can feasibly do to profit off being in a well off position in the other world is eating and drinking. Those summoned can also come back to Earth as well. So the corporation won't make anything on Earth which leads me to believe there is no profit in attempting to monetize this, so why are they so committed to investing in it? Their time on Earth will only be wasted with no gains. Their time in this other world seems strictly optional.
    • The Parasites are Zerg - The author has been hinting at this in the novel. They use zerg tactics, they have borderline no description other than borderline mindless insectoid-like creatures whose hatcheries nests cause the land to decay.
Overall, if the author was a bit braver about writing the things he wanted and placed more thought into why someone would want to do otherworld labor it would be exceptional. Still, there's character development, growth, and the protagonist is becoming slowly (but surely) stronger in an epic story.

EDIT: Original rev for 169.

Continuing the series up to 261 gives rise to mostly interesting plots, however this one was the one that makes me wanna drop.

His closest friends whom he considers family plot against him to teach him a lesson on leadership and because he's made s*upid decisions. So they keep him in the dark about important knowledge which could put everyone in danger. Then they pretend the people closest to him have been injured.

The fact that they willfully chose to collectively keep him in the dark at the whims of his proxy leader show they weren't that close to him to begin with.

Sometimes, reading webnovels it's hard to remember what quality writing looks like. Thus far, Second Coming of Avarice displays the qualities of traditional novel-length formats - the author has mapped out in advance the backstory and their critical plot elements, and it shows. Small details in early chapters hint to a greater world, and yes, that greater world exists, and is remains consistent.

One simple example is the main character's main ability, his ability to scan items and see them colored, e.g., green for non-hostile, red for deadly threat. However, the... more>> author has wisely left this ability as partially locked, so his colored vision doesn't work on the most plot-centric characters or items; they don't have a color. However, you know the author is working hard behind the scenes, because eventually with his ability, everything has a color. Therefore, when something doesn't have a color, the author must know why. Better still, the flawed main character doesn't just passively accept his ability, he makes judgements on why something would be non-colored. He is curious how his ability works, and realizes that a lack of information in his ability is still information, and responds accordingly.

And speaking of being flawed, the main character is deliberately set up with a flaw, he's a dissolute gambler who's wasted his life away. Because he's sort of a time traveler, in that he's been bestowed memories of a future self that failed, much of his flawed self has been washed away, however despite having changed, both his flawed core personality and his future self's memories and emotions allow "bad" decisions to be made by the character without making him seem s*upid.

Firstly, his future self's memories and emotions sometimes overcome his rational, self-preservational nature. Because his future self came to a Bad End, and knows/guesses there are specific points of failure in his timeline, his future self's emotions about an event can override him and cause him to do highly dangerous activities, which would normally seem suicidally dumb.

Second, setting him up as a flawed gambler does the same, when he gambles his life, he's aware of it being a character flaw. Most importantly, very early on, he s*upidly takes on a too difficult mission and almost dies, and then, in hindsight, realizes how s*upid he was gambling his life for something he doesn't need, and this spurs a shift in his thinking. In fact, this is a recurring theme of the webnovel, where the novel attempts to reconcile the fact that being an adventurer going on quests or expeditions is inherently risky, but older, wiser characters repeatedly advise against reckless behavior. And the novel doesn't shy from death, essentially every character that's introduced there's a coin flip whether or not they'll die, which serves to reinforce the idea that competent adventurers control their risk. If anything, this happens a little too often, because to get to their Level, experienced adventurers must have taken on dozens or hundreds of expeditions on average, so for them to die on the expedition the MC's on might seem a little forced. Fortunately, thus far the author has set them up for reasons to be unusually s*upid compared to their past, so I'll allow it so far. Still, in any case it's apparent the author is extremely aware of one of the most common pitfalls of the genre: why would a MC repeatedly risk his life?

As discussed, the novel does not shy away from death, and although it's largely in the background, the novel doesn't shy away from s*x either. As one character puts it, there's no internet or TV here, all there is to do is eat, drink, and f***. So brothels are common, and very early on the MC experiences culture shock because on a carriage ride one of the adventurer pays another for a bl**job for "5 nickel coins", with the negotiation spanning a couple of paragraphs. 5 nickel coins is later established to be roughly the equivalent of $25, and the negotiation and the s*x act all take place in front of the MC, and he's treated as an obvious rookie for being surprised by it. In any case, a substantial percentage of the characters are romantically and/or sexually involved with another named character, and this colors their perceptions and actions accordingly. Additionally, while I have't done the math, I'd guess there's something like a 2:1 gender split between male:female adventurer characters. Without getting too much into gender politics, this is something like the ratio I would expect given the setting, because the majority of adventurers rely on raw strength as having a Warrior class, and characters must rely on their own capability to get through the tutorial, which is rather deadly, and it's apparent your base stats as a human are foundational for your fantasy growth powered by fantasy gods and leveling and systems. That being said, for "beautiful female character" purposes, being female instantly increases your chances of being important to the plot, and essentially almost everyone is attractive, especially if you're female, and 100% of the important female characters have been beautiful. Oh well. I guess there's just not a market for the hero rescuing 60-year-old grandmas from the orcs.

There's also an apparent political backstory going on where the human kingdom the MC is residing in is flanked by both some kind of alien menace and a coalition of demihuman nations. This is largely spooned out a little at a time as it's set up and self-apparent that the average person neither is particularly interested or informed about the geopolitics of the world. But as the story goes on it must eventually come to the forefront as the prologue establishes that the inability of the "humans" of the fantasy world to unite with Earthlings is what leads to the MC dying to his Bad End, so it's necessary for him to be the factor that causes a lasting political union between Earth factions and the primary fantasy human faction. A side effect of this choice is that the author deliberately makes the different political factions and nationalities and races of Earth to be the core reason for the ending of humanity in the fantasy world. Because Earthlings can freely travel between Earth and the fantasy world (which needs a name, dammit), they maintain factions that exist on Earth. So literally, the Mafia is competing against the Triad and Google (for some unknown reason there doesn't appear to be national government factions). Although it's unclear exactly what benefits the travelers get from the fantasy world (we can only presume they are vast, as the fantasy world lacks the convenience or entertainments of the modern world, which they can go back to at any time), the top powers are very wealthy on both sides. In any case, this means that despite being a Korean webnovel, people from across the world are featured as travelers to the fantasy world, and thankfully, there's no trace of "Korea no.1!!!" in the setting, although it's established early on that for reasons unknown to the MC at this time, Korea, China, and Germany are special regions allowed national representation instead of continental representation, and should thusly make an outsized percentage of the Earthling population. Indeed, the most powerful faction is some made-up Korean corporation. Of course this is convenient for the author's purposes of having Korean characters, but the author again establishes the necessary backstory - it isn't set in stone that Korea is powerful, it's just that the most powerful Earthling was a Korean guy, and by his merits, he essentially single-handedly made them the most powerful faction, and the author makes this an interesting political crisis, because he's disappeared at the start of the novel, and they're experiencing a crisis because of the power vacuum created from their top agent being MIA, and this directly affects the MC as he was recruited by one of their agents, so to some extent they regard him as one of their own, and regard him as a very promising rookie. As a side effect of factions being able to freely travel back and forth, this also means that power on Earth directly translates into power in the new world (and vice versa), and the novel has broadly hinted that developing nations are mostly unimportant because of this - with not a single graduate from South America, Africa, or Oceania from the MC's tutorial round. Accordingly, we can presume that the factions from these Earth regions are very weak relative to the factions from other regions. Again, this isn't meaningless backstory, as political fighting from factions from Earth are again the core reason humanity fails in the fantasy world.

In any case, my overriding point in this review is that the entire novel is well thought-out, and not mind-rendingly dumb in terms of characters, setting, motivations, economics, and politics, which is unfortunately the case of the vast majority of webnovels. It's well worth the read. <<less

I find it weird that this novel is so highly rated right now.

The very beginning of the story was arguably the best, where the MC actually had emotions, and the world building involving different worlds, aliens (its all in the prologue, so now spoilers here), etc including the MC's beginning predicament was highlighted (gambling addiction, was a scumbag, lost his ability, etc). But as soon as the MC received his future memories, he basically turned into an emotionless, quiet, boring MC that is typical of the 'I am so cool... more>> and quiet' korean MC's. The story was originally from the MC's perspective where he was very interesting even as a scumbag, but now his dialogue, inner thoughts, and emotions are a severe backdrop to the other characters. And the story is just so convoluted and confusing. I don't see how the MC's VISUAL ability makes him so PHYSICALLY strong and OP, and there are so many plot holes as well. The other characters are so one-dimensional and dry that it just further makes the novel even more boring. I feel like the the author put tons of ideas in a hat, and just picks one out at random and just uses that to further the plot. This entire novel is a complete mess. <<less

Seems like another negatif review.

Worth 2☆, the truth is that I will read this until end, tbh I only want to know how this end.

So---Why I rate it 2☆? Coz the MC, that for sure. Absolutely.

I don't understand how majority see the MC as realistic. Damm dude! How can such a Beta be realistic?? It damm a plot hole. Author only want his novels have two MC that have a very different persona (1st book MC are a complete apathetic and cunning MC, while this book well``` a Beta... more>> MC)

---Human can change dude!....I know that, but, have u ever seen someone change his persona so fast that it felt like some kind of sh*t NEET reincarnation happening???

......... It such a glaring plot hole, that even happen in the begining!............ and many says its a perfect and a relief!!

And then we all can know who the one in charge in his (Author) household, from all of majority powerful chara, be it ally and villain alike. FEMALE.....

---Hey dude, at least the battle are thrilling and MC bcm badass, damm u must see how he struggle to win, the effort dude!!........ (-.-) Struggling? Well yes! So much in fact that in the end Plot Armor decided to help MC---------MC? Badass? Yup! With HIS LIFE as a price----------effort?? Ofc he really put much effrot to training! Only to be slapped really hard in the major fights (VS 3 ARMY COMMANDER, VS SHADOW IN A HOUSE (he flee), VS HOMONCULUS, VS ARMY COMMANDER (again)) (~.~)

- The romance are good dude!.... good?? If obsessive love and (reverse) r*pe are good? Then I 'hands up' |_ (-.-) _|

Well// true to a most NEGATIF Review, ||| overrated, overpraised, wake up kid!! MC not a HUMANE at all, he is a HAREM MC-----kekekekeke!!

Rather than a review, I want to ask a very serious question as why the title suddenly shifted from "The Second Coming of Avarice (Greed) " to "The Second Coming of Gluttony (a cardinal sin completely different from what the story's premise and themes are about) "? Avarice (intense desire for something) is what drives the whole story, in other words various characters' greed and desires for something throughout leads to every single bit of action that occurs. Although I don't want to reveal anything, let's just say a certain... more>> adventurer group got wrecked when they got a little too greedy. And the MC is driven by the desire to run away from his family and to finally succeed in life, because what he wants is validation that stems from his complex that formed because of how horribly he acted on Earth. I'm obviously a noob at this, but I just have to ponder how does "Gluttony" tie in at all to what I've read, when Avarice perfectly describes the story's focus. <<less

Everytime that I read this novel it would always show me how wrong I was. Everytime that I would think that 'ahhh, why would he do that?' 'Isn't this too OOC?''Is he even thinking?' there would be a self realization on the part of the MC and he's not like those types of MCs where their goal is just to act cool infront of their femammals 'cause honestly those types of MCs are just too much. Why do authors even write those types of novels?

Well, in this novel you'll be... more>> reading how the MC finds himself and learn to correct his faults. Of course, it is still early to judge the overall effectiveness of the novel but as of now I like how it is written. <<less

One of the best web novel or should I say the best web novel I have ever read. MC is not perfect and had many flaws but that what makes us root for him, especially his relationship with people from Earth.

Liked it very much. Nothing much to say.

Quite disappointing that this novel isn't getting the viewership it deserves in my opinion, I personally love the story, the mc's sometimes dry humor and the interaction with the support cast is great as well. The start of the novel is a bit rough, I wasn't sure if I was suppose to loath the MC or be sympathetic to him, but it as it moves forward I couldn't help myself getting slightly attached to him emotionally.

Spoiler

I also quite enjoy the fact that the MC is given the "how is he doing that" treatment like most over powered protags get when they start ramping up the story, but it has been done in a logical way. He had put in the hard work and received the support of a trainer to obtain his strength when everyone else went out and simply used their base abilities and stats to progress.

[collapse]

Bottom line I really enjoy this novel but can't read Korean, so I rely on the translator. So I would love if this novel got more popular to increase his releases! ^^

PS. Cho Hong is looking right in her illustration got damn. <<less

Exceptional.

After reading fleshed-out novels such as Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, The Empty Box and the Zeroth Maria, The Novels Extra and Overlord, I find it increasingly hard to enjoy novels which don't have a certain level of character depth. The Second Coming of Avarice is a novel for all you out there who want something with substance. Go read it!

oh and @ Arkeus
1 The writing/translations are kinda dam excellent (Praise the Translator!)
2 The characterisation is satisfying enough. No character feels like a template, they all have... more>> their own personality, thoughts and morals unlike most novels.
3 MC has a unique 'cheat' ability that is original and will continue to be interesting throughout the novel but still has his own flaws and moral contradictions that he has to figure out. <<less

Really one of the best novels out there

Such a pity that it's dropped due to low readership.

The action scenes are vividly written while the story has enough pace and intrigue to keep you coming back for more.

I think the main problem is the lack of advertising. If we get it up the novelupdates rank by continuing to give positive reviews I'm sure there will be more than enough interest to get it going back on.

Thanks for the translation so far though! Excellent work!

The Second Coming of Gluttony simultaneously takes the worst tropes of both KR and JP and puts them into one novel. It's spectacular, almost. We have a sheep MC that's surrounded by a harem, isekai'd to another world, and a ridiculously OP MC that's "humble."

The tutorial is quite typical of what you'd expect from a KR dungeon novel, but what happens after is what you'd expect from an OP Japanese isekai. Everything that's fun in KR dungeon novels gets slowly s**ked away chapter by chapter.

First of all: there's no tension... more>> because everything is so easy. Unlike good KR novels, other than the tutorial stage, there's absolutely no tension or risk of death that gets conveyed very properly in The Second Coming of Gluttony. This has a lot to do with the fact that you dying in the other world basically does not affect the "Earth" you. If you die in Paradise (the other world), you just forget your memories there and return to your daily routine on Earth. That's one safety net. To make it worse, you can revive in Paradise given the requisite requirements. The other reason for this lack of tension is that despite humans having poor standings, to the point of being on the brink of extinction, all of the missions that the MC does is extremely easy, or goes all according to plan too easily. This gets even more exasperated once you realize that the MC is still level 1-2 when all of this goes down.

Second: plot armor. The MC gets all of the most conveniently placed powerups at his time in paradise. He doesn't need to really work for it, and everything is handed to him on a platter. There's even a "Post-tutorial" zone where everyone can train, and of course, the MC gets OP and gets the most powerful items because he gets the time and attention of hot women that also are powerful personal trainers... how convenient. In his missions, he always gets lucky breaks, and everything is easy going. Oh! But he's humble because he realized how close he was to dying in this one specific mission! His enemies are all but nonexistent or are easily defeated by him. On the flip side, he gets so much help on everything from people that are powerful influences in the world for not much of a reason. The MC presumably states that he hated the fact that people treat this world like a game, but everyone is basically an NPC to the MC, and the other world just seems like a game.

There's no crisis of death, all of the missions are too easy, Hot babes and other powerful people are constantly allying and helping the MC, and he gets convenient powerups for no reason. This novel's quite bad. <<less

Honestly, I feel quite contradictory about this novel. It feels as if the author is a very talented artist that painted a beautiful painting... and then decided to throw a rotten tomato at it as a form of artistic expression.

The world-building is fantastic. I love the world of Fallen Paradise, the way it works, the events and so on. The author makes combat exciting, emotional scenes impactful and so on.

But there are two big things that really detract from the experience, hence my 3 stars.

Firstly, the author forcefully makes the... more>> protagonist into a caricature in an attempt at humour. MC is intelligent, hard-working, clever and even witty. He is a 26-year-old man that already had a girlfriend in the past... but he acts as if he doesn't understand the concept of s*x and romance. Innuendos go right over his head, he gets confused when someone tries to flirt with him, and just generally behaves like he's 8 instead of 26 when it comes to women. It's so incredibly frustrating each time it happens, it's like the author pressed randomise on his personality.

Secondly, the way that Fallen Paradise is treated is simply inconsistent. The author spends time making dark and gruesome scenes, emotional bonding and highlighting that Paradise is a real-world, with real people... and the suddenly treats it like a game when they feel like it. For example, people that prefer living in this new world instead of their shitty lives on earth are treated like they're addicted! MC genuinely feels happy in Paradise, and everyone treats him as if he got addicted to a game. Even those that also really care about the world of paradise (one of them being his mentor) think of him as addicted and literally force him to return to Earth where he simply isn't happy.

I really want to love the novel, and I'm definitely gonna finish it, but those things I mentioned above really mess with my perception of it. I wouldn't be surprised as if the author had a pre-teen child and let them write pieces of the story, that's how weird it seems. <<less

The best Webnovel I have read so far, and I've read a lot of 'em.

I know a lot of people have issues with the MC, but, the depiction is realistic. Well, as realistic as one can get with World-hopping, Gods, and Superpowers. The MC was a prodigy, heavily relied on his abilities but lost them due to overuse, becomes a scum of humanity.

It seems generic, but the kicker is how the second chance is played out. There's no Gary Stu here, the process of redemption is painful and at times... more>> made me want to skip them or drop the book because it's that realistic.

The position the MC is thrust into is a favoured son of heaven, but the slog, the grind all of it is amazingly well written. And I'm a sucker for an MC who performs like a beast in wars. Complete dismissal of one's own self and a single burning desire to protect what's important.

And the MC grows with each arc, his goal is static. But, he understands and learns that there are realistic and important factors he should consider when racing toward it.

The romance is important, in the early chapters he's dense af. But, his view is still that of a tr*sh of humanity. And his escape is Paradise. The romance takes a backseat most of the time, but it's still present.

The most important part of this story is his growth as a character, his unwavering selfishness/desire to protect what is his, and the badassery he displays in a fight.

Kudos to the author, and the translators.

I could go on and on about this, but the important thing is,

TL;DR: Give this story a shot. It is a masterpiece. <<less

So... After overwhelmingly good (for NovelUpdates site) evaluation I tried to read this. And tried hard. But no. I can't anymore. After 42 chapters I dropped this. Why? Well let's see:

  1. Story: Some "gods" made a deal with royal family of other world to save them. But instead of helping them they just setup dubious nonworking system (as shown in first! chapter, their "help" was completely idiotic and failed miserably). BUT! out of nowhere there is tr*shy boy, addict s*ave of corporation who wished to go back and redo things. So he is allowed to do that (he got his emotions and memories from his death (regret, wishes and classical "romantic" asian thing) as dream which he forgets, mostly). Then it's classical story of plot armor, idiotism and repetition. He goes through hellish training called Tutorial and Neutral Zone. In both of them he is using his OP plot armor skill to win historic amout of points. Then he goes to Paradise (original naming I must say (ding ding irony detected!)). It's when I dropped it.
  2. MC: tr*sh, deplorable bastard... thats what he is called by his family. Instead of helping him with his addiction (sickness), they abandon him. His sister tells him to kill himself. Well... then he got his dream, he realizes and went straight. All in one month... Yeah, sure thats how long time addicted, depressed individuals works. NO! Getting out of addiction is a long LONG time process. Not something you can get over after a few weeks, especially when addiction is only a symptom... Well. But it happens. Did he learnt something? No... he became second-rate (from third-rate). He is weak-willed, s*upid, unable to use his power properly. He lacks bravado and bravery. Ruthlesness? Naaah, he is not favorite of one of the main devils Gula (gluttony/avarice). He acts like "saint" from japanese beta boy anime. Even Asta from Black Clover have more balls than him... Oh yea and when he wins against lvl 3 antagonist... really good... doesnt makes sense but so what!
  3. Side character: Interchangeable. They are nothing. Always the same. Cliched unnamed (I don't even remember their names. And when I was writing this it was after 15 minutes after I dropped the novel) antagonists. Supporting characters are boring as hell, classical boring supports. Nothing interesting about them.
  4. World setup: Corporations who acts towards their own MAIN combat forces like s*aves? What happens when someone gets stronger than them? The contract is just a paper without any possible ability to enforce it. There will be a lot of individuals who could raze them to ground. And corporation stronger than cartels? In real world cartels are holding superior position to any corporation, just because they will kill any people from them... Oh and I don't undestand. You have to sing a contract to get to that world? Why? Not explained. It doesn't makes sense. That system made by those devils (deities) is prove that they are powerful. Well... just one of the things that doesn't make even "novel sense".
I could completely disassemble this bad imitation of novel more and more, but no.. But it's waste of time to read this. I don't know why this novel is getting so much great marks, but it's competely off the mark. It's terrible, frustrating novel where you want to erase memories of this " novel". Read from recension from Ennei too.

-Chapter 1 to about 60 (basically the tutorial) : I originally gave 5* for its originality and just the overall quality, buteven if the tutorial was good I quickly realized how little human interaction there was.

-starting from chapter 60, the story became hollow with no real development and even 2 almost identical missions in both dev and results

- chapter 75 and 76 alone can make me rate it 1*, the nonsense in them is rather incredible

-The author basically can't write about human interaction : not only are they repetitive... more>> and boring but they're not even realistic, hard to see at first but if you focus on it, it just doesn't make sense anymore.

Then again the story is still first in monthly ranking and well rated. It is in my opinion overrated but I only read less than 100 chapters, might just get better later on <<less

TL;DR: If you like fantasy-adventure stories with dynamic protagonists, you will like this. Guaranteed. Yes, it is that good.

Seriously, just read it.

---------------------------------------------

... more>> This story is truly excellent. It is hands down the best example of isekais without the 'empire building' tag, in spite of technically not being an isekai. It simply takes everything you would expect from a good seinen isekai (non-grimdark) and does it well.

It has interesting, dynamic characters. It has epic fights. It has levels of struggle and challenge actually appropriate to the protagonist's power level. It has a well thought-out world with some very interesting alterations made to the standard premises for this genre. I could go on and on about the good writing choices that were made in this story, because there were a lot.

But for me, what ultimately convinced me that this story was worth the time was the strength of its character interactions and the complexity of the protagonist. He's not just a generic self-insert, but an honest to goodness real human being, complete with flaws, mistakes, and good points that change over time as he grows as a person. He's also the most self-aware protagonist I've ever read, surpassing even traditional genre-savvy protagonists, to the point where his self-reflections and triumphs over himself are straight-up my favorite part of this story, surpassing even the excellently done moments of badassery.

Reasons to love this story:

Spoiler
    • Dynamic, interesting, and believable protagonist.
    • All of the typical isekai tropes are done fantastically well.
    • Protagonist actually has to earn all of his best powers, rather than having them handed to him on a silver platter.
    • Why are you still reading this review? Scroll up! Chapter 1 is up there!

Reasons to hate this story:

Spoiler
    • Precisely because the protagonist is a real human being, this is not an unabashed power fantasy story. The protagonist makes mistakes, and acknowledges them when he does. And he's not the type to lord his OPness over others when there are still so many better than him. If you're here for the blatant power fantasy and lording your OPness over others, move along.
    • Many of the traditional fantasy and isekai tropes are still present, even if they are subverted or altered beyond recognition as often as they're played straight.
    • This is not a true wish fulfillment story. The protagonist is not truly OP in any way, and is certainly no genius or martial savant. Everything that he gains is earned through hard work and carefully leveraging his (incredibly underwhelming) special power to gradually expand his web of friends, allies, and comrades.
    • The romantic subplot is a well-done and exceptionally human slow play... but it's not an integral part of the story. Note the lack of Romance tag.
    • There are harem shenanigans. And they're even the cliched, typical harem shenanigans where the inexplicably oblivious (donkan) protagonist accidentally flirts with each girl enough to make them fall in love... and then proceeds to do nothing with it for hundreds of chapters. It's not focused on to the point of overwhelming the main story, but it's bad enough that this is the primary reason that the story got an overall "excellent" rating instead of a "masterful" one.

I have read web novels for the past 5 years, but this is the first, and likely only review I will make on this site.

The Second Coming of Avarice/Gluttony is what can only be characterized as a 'gem'. The MC, Seol, was born with the power to see the world in Green—an indicator of whether or not the object/person in question would bring him 'good' or 'bad'. Using this power, he gambles—and is drunk on this power—until one day, the green disappears. But he continues to gamble. Again and again,... more>> until his Friends, Family, now ex-girlfriend, don't recognize or acknowledge him anymore. He is a drunkard and an uncontrollable gambler, one that sacrifices his family for even a bit of extra cash to gamble.

When he is at the lowest of lows, he feels an emotion—a memory, of his future. One that is tarnished by his regrets. With but this one emotion and memory to guide him, he changes the course of his life.

The Second Coming of Avarice is my all-time favorite novel. It has depth. You feel the pain and emotions. It is written in a style that does not drag, but leads with a perfect pace, and at times, drops 'Easter eggs'.

I would recommend this to anyone—at least the first arc. At times, I've clenched my fists in hype, I've gasped in shock, and I've wiped my moisty eyes. It is gorgeous, and I predict this novel to rise to the top of Novel Updates in the days to come. <<less

An amazing introduction that really builds up the storyline. But it doesn't stop there and keeps building up the tension.
