Five hundred years have passed since the humans went extinct at the hands of the fearsome and mysterious ‘Beasts’. The surviving races now make their homes up on floating islands in the sky, out of reach of all but the most mobile of Beasts.

Only a small group of young girls, the Leprechauns, can wield the ancient weapons needed to fend off invasions from these creatures. Into the girls’ unstable and fleeting lives, where a call to certain death could come at any moment, enters an unlikely character: a young man who lost everything in his final battle five hundred years ago, the last living human awakened from a long, icy slumber.

Unable to fight any longer, Willem becomes the father that the girls never had, caring for and nurturing them even as he struggles to come to terms with his new life, in which he feels the pain of helplessly waiting for his loved ones to return home from battle that his ‘Daughter’ once felt for him so long ago. Together, Willem and the girls gradually come to understand what family means and what is truly worth protecting.

This is a story about a man who lost everything. His home, his people, his friends, his loved ones..... all lost in the passages of time. As the last human on the face of the world he has to start a new in a strange new world ruled by creatures unfamiliar to him. He has to cope with loses and deal with wounds that will never heal, physically and mentally. Until one day he meets a group of girls who has to face the same fate as he did 500... more>> years ago. There he has to face his past and once again step forward.

Spoiler

Do not get this wrong. This is NOT a harem novel series just because he is in the middle of a group of girls. I got some spoilers from other forums and he sticks with one girl. I think this is worth the read because it is a story that will pull at the heart strings as you find out what the MC has to go through. I will update this review as the story progresses.

[collapse]
Edit 1: Boy does this novel have interesting twists and turns. Questions as to why the world came to be are clearly spelled out to you and make a lot of sense. Not only does the MC have a sad fate but so does the Heroine. <<less

This is a story of suffering and darkness with the glimpse of light and heart warming. This is a story of a man who has lost everything, who was broken, who tried to get up just to be put down again, who desperately try to find hope just to lose it again.

This is a great story, but a very sad one. It can't make it to my top 3 but definitely in the top 10 of all the novels I have read.

Edit: just finish the book and have to say... more>> as expected for the most part. Still hasn't make it to my top 3 thou. <<less

Telling of a young (or not so young) man Willem's encounter with a group of peculiar girls preordained to a tragic fate, SukaSuka focuses on Willem's spiritual journey to rediscover his roles and responsibilities after being thrusted into a future world both foreign and hostile to him. As Willem attempts to forge his bonds anew and confronts his dark past, the story simultaneously delves deeply into what is considered "good" and "evil", what is justice, what it means to be a hero, and how to cope with the overwhelming sense... more>> of loss.

This light novel reveals that, underneath the thin veil of a facade that is so often used to simplify a character as a "trope", are complex emotions and thought patterns at work. A little girl carrying the burdens of the future of a people may be both a battle-worn veteran and a tender romantic at heart; a man-eating troll of outspoken-borderline-aggressive personality might as well have a maiden's heart; a bulky lizardman with an austere presence may likewise have a compassionate and fatherly side to him. Each person is a clumsy assemblage of contradicting traits, and that is exactly what makes them connectable from a reader's point of view.

I suppose quite a few of us had picked up a book of fables when we were small and immersed ourselves within stories of otherworldly charm and enchantment, which undoubtedly serve as the foundation of our imagination.

Correspondingly, SukaSuka is a light novel that is inspired by the classics, that imitates the classics, and appeals to the readers' penchant for the classics. Reminiscent of the Greek mythologies which I was so obsessed with during my days of adolescence - tales of Oedipus, of Hercules, of Odysseus, of Orpheus, or of Eros and Psyche - SukaSuka strikes me as a story that merely seeks to convey itself with the utmost grace and sentiment whereas the audience's enjoyment is secondary - it is an attribute that defines quality literature as opposed to quality entertainment. In witness of how the plot unfolds I cannot help but retain a sense of awe towards the penmanship of the author, for SukaSuka is a work that I have yet to see another of such caliber in the medium. It is, in my honest opinion, nothing short of a masterpiece. <<less

This LN is a very refreshing read. It is a story of someone who simply yearns for what he has lost. And he is very frightened of having to experience that sense of loss again that he could fall into despair. One of the scene that instantaneously captivates me into reading this novel is the very first scene that author shows us. Specifically, the first chapter of the first volume. It is a portrayal of warmth. That is all. A warmth of being with your family members or someone dear... more>> to you. It is a very ordinary scene. The MC is just having dinner with a family member of his and they are having a chat to pass time. Simple yet so meaningful that I could actually feel this fuzzy warmth in my heart.

Another lovely aspect is the MC's interaction with the children. The children that I'm referring to are the Leprechauns. Their idiosyncrasies makes them truly adorable and Willem handled them splendidly. The scenes displaying their interactions are some of the enjoyable slice of life part in this LN.

I like how the other readers describe the MC as "broken" which ties back to his experience of losing something. It is a very accurate description of him and a driving motivation for me to read the LN in order to understand more about Willem's "broken" personality. In the 2 volumes that I have read, the author would give a revelation in their final chapters. A revelation that foreshadows the overall plot/setting. Hinting a darker and much crueler fate that awaits Willem or maybe other characters. I think other people has already described how this LN criticizes the theme of being a Hero. It brings the a unique concept which contradicts many stories about heroes who are an epitome of hope. In contrast to this LN, the Hero of Heroes are an epitome of despair.
Spoiler

The LN describes that those who are chosen as the Hero of Heroes (Main hero of Regular Brave) are people who had lead a miserable, tragic and horrible life. These elements of negativity are their driving will to live on. So that they could take revenge or inflict punishment to those who have wronged them.

[collapse]

After reading 2 volumes, I tried to correlate from my reading with the LN's title and the LN's cover page for every volume until the latest one. Consequently, I felt as if my heart was wrenching. Almost every cover page is illustrated with character (s) who are crying. It may be a symbol of tragedy/drama genre heavily influencing the story. Trying to understand both of the titles; "What Are You Doing at the End? Are You Busy? Can You Save Me?" (Prequel) and "What Are You Doing at the End? Can We Meet Again Once More?" (Sequel), they just scream of bad omen. Not that it means that its going to be bad. But, it made me more intrigued to confirm my theory and speculations in reference with the "revelation" in each volume. It is another driving factor of mine to read this LN, to know what kind of fate befalls these characters.

I have understood that Suka2's style is to convey the emotional impact subtly and cumulatively. As for me, it tore my brain and heart. How it finally got me is just from an expression of honest words (Indeed, the "feeling" has been accumulated overtime throughout the volumes). The story pricks the heart bit by bit until it reaches the climax (which may vary with individuals). IMO, those who actually understand the circumstances of the characters can truly enjoy the story. To do that, just allow yourself to get engrossed in the entirety of this LN. I dunno about others but I'm sure many of us readers ran out of tissue while reading the LN. Kudos to the still standing warrior who continues to struggle to read until its inevitable end. <<less

Shuumatsu is one of those novels that I new right away that I would like. From the first chapter (yes the first chapter), I new that there was going to be a detailed story about some unavoidable series events that lead to a tragic story with a bitter sweet taste throughout. I was right.

The main character Willem is the last human in existence. Due to some (acceptable) circumstances, he was frozen for 500 years. He's not OP, he is strong but definitely not OP. He can't even fight anymore, but... more>> that's okay because the story isn't about him fighting, it's about finding a place to belong to and accepting tragic events. His task isn't to fight, it's to give solace to those that do fight.

The main reason I read this was because of the Romance tag, and I was glad to read something that didn't scream Fantasy Harem. The romance is cute and believable. In a sense it isn't a strong force in the story, but it's there and greatly appreciated.

I don't really want to spoil it so I've talked as vaguely as possible, but I recommend you try it out for yourself. You'll know whether you like it or not after the first chapter or 2.

If you do read it, get ready for them feels! Because they are strong in this story.

PS: The novel is a million times better than the anime adaption, though the adaption wasn't terrible. <<less

Reading through the ending.. It really hits me.

The story of past hero that unable to fulfil his promise to his daughter. The struggle of past hero finding a place to where he belong. The harsh world, the twisted world, the dying world. Where upon he wakes up. Nothing is left.

Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte li desu ka? Is a novel sets on Fantasy World where magical swords - Carrilon, Dug Weapon - and Gods existed. It is a story of clashing wishes. It is story of... more>> tragedy. And yet, it is a story the romance of a man and a girl which destined to die young. No, it begins a little in the past, the story of a promise, and the story of a sacrifice.

Whats this, my brain in shambles.

SukaSuka is basically a tragedy filled story with great concept and world building. You will keep asking, why things like that, why it turns this way, why and more whys. Do not be shy, the author really write a great tale with such details that captivate anyone who read this. The story is also well balanced, where our hero won't always get what he want. Well written and the flow is just great, there is no info dump or just delusional monologue. It is just a masterpiece to shatter your heart, and glue them together just to be shattered with the bitter sweet end.

Despite that, I envy Willem (our MC) a bit. Just how many lolis attached to him. It is tragedy, but it had so much sugar that you will start puking rainbows. SukaSuka is such novel.

All in all, it is too good. Even I was in shame for not writing a review on this piece. All I can say is, it is a marvelous ride. Even a journey of a great explorer should met an end. Even the story of a salaryman will eventually ends. It just that kind of story.

Thank you Fgilan-sama for translating this gem. Thank you Anri-sama for suggesting this gem. <<less

This is honestly one of the best light novels out there right now. In a market that’s saturated by reincarnation fantasies there are few genuinely good fantasy novels out there. It’s a breath of fresh air to see a light novel that isn’t just a summary of the main character’s stats. SukaSuka, however, goes beyond that benchmark with great world building that slowly develops over the course of the series. The world actually feels lived in with characters whose lives actually make sense. Not to mention the mythology and lore... more>> behind the series is great. The MC also isn’t a overpowered badass like in other series, but he’s not a pushover either. He struggles with just about everything and doesn’t always win, which makes him much easier to root for. Once again I can’t stress enough how good a series this is. It doesn’t stick to common light novel tropes, but it’s also not a too edgy for it’s own good subversion of the genre. Instead it focuses solely on being a good fantasy series, which is why it works so well. <<less

This is a great novel. The characters are well-fleshed, and while there is some romance the novel largely limits itself to the father-daughter dynamics between Willem and the fairies. The plot is interesting, but not dragged out. In fact, for later volumes it is even a tinge fast, especially volume 4, but it avoids becoming an info drop.

The downside, however, is that it is depressingly sad. There is a balanced mix of feels, but the author always makes sure that following a heartwarming moment, he sinks you into the throes... more>> of loathing despair. The guy has a vendetta against his characters, and unlike those novels you can trust in the MC to succeed, they drop like flies. You should read this novel. It's interesting. But you'll end up empty and begging for more. Curse that author. <<less

This is a real gem hidden amongst the piles of mediocre, average and occasional tr*sh story on Novel Updates.

The premise is quite unique with humanity already extinct and the remaining races stuck upon a limited number of floating islands. The Beast's that roam the surface are still a clear and present danger to the inhabitants of the isles and that is where the fairies come in. They are the only thing that can deal with Beast's but the mortality rate is high.
Spoiler

Only by self destructing can they hope any guarantee of winning.

The MC was a former pseudo Brave from an orphanage whose body is now broken beyond repair.

Now enter an amazing story filled with gut punch feels, awesome narrative, great character development and the best LN romance I have ever seen. This is one hell of a emotional rollercoaster. Honestly, this series is one of the best I have EVER read.

Started great but descended into a blubbering I'm-not-sure-I-can-finish-this nonsense by volume 5. So edgy you will bleed tears of goddamn anger.

Skip it, run away, the other reviews are a lie.

The first volume is very good. This is a trap common in Japanese entertainment where in the beginning everything is vague enough you can imagine reasonable explanations and, like an imbecile, trust the author to have good explanations for the rest.

We have seemingly an adult character post serious trauma taking a shine on a bunch of orphaned children whose life... more>> story is strangely similar to his own.

There is surprisingly good dialogue, like (not really a spoiler) :

Spoiler

"Come on, something's wrong here. You're not supposed to doubt their victory!"

"It goes against my principles to look away from reality."

"I'm saying, you're not supposed to look away from hope and dreams! A believing heart might have some mysterious power, y'know!"

"Everyone struggles because it doesn't. You can't return to reality when something unexpected happens if you desperately convince yourself it does. I need to be able to accept whatever happens to them, especially since I do believe in them."

[collapse]

All of this is a facade. The "adult" character with every subsequent volume becomes more and more an unbearable edgy teenager. Apparently he is actually 16 and not 25 or older, which on discovery made me cringe so much I pulled a muscle. He treated the 15 year old female war veteran that fell in love with him as much too young for him and immature. You are basically the exact same age you damn dork.

Of course every single female in the series falls in love with the MC almost immediately. At the same time, he is a basically a human slug that isn't interested in love or romance, but only in wallowing in the darkness of a musty cave while simultaneously looking at the moon. I just don't understand this trope in Japanese/Korean entertainment. Why do this ? If you don't want romance, just don't add it to the story. Why this inane trope Japan, why ?

The story goes nowhere that actually makes sense, logically or emotionally. The first volume might make you think there is a point and a carefully planned trajectory... Nope. Nada. The end is a horrible horrible mess. I feel an effort was put into making it insulting to the readers.

For example : (Spoiler, but not a big one)

Spoiler

Characters die tragically multiple times. How can a character die tragically multiple times you ask ? You kill it in one volume "off screen". Resurrect it temporarily and have it sacrifice itself again. And then you do it again. You think this cheapens the whole thing? Naaahhh.

[collapse]

The plot twists are increasingly ridiculous. The last volume felt like a particularly bad and condensed season of 24. We had amnesia, monster transformations, multiple suicidal terrorist organizations (multiple!), a corrupt military organization and the dumbest and the most morally bankrupt "self-sacrifice" I ever saw. All of this and much more in about 250 pages. Oh how I struggled to finish the book.

Very major spoilers from here about particularly egregious plot holes:

Spoiler
  1. What the hell was that "I will make them kill me for publicity" stunt Willem did in the end. It makes so little sense :
    1. He actually almost killed the children. The fact he didn't is not due to him holding back. Why is your "defeat in a fake battle to the death" not actually fake ?
    2. He made 10 year old girls kill their own father figure for no reason.
    3. Why would this even work ? It isn't like it was broadcast live to the whole world, and even then any corrupt government, which it was already demonstrated as, can spin the story however it likes. Plus, it is actually a lie.
    4. He doesn't even die in the end, but remains as an immortal soul (How did that happen ?) talking to a stone whose only conscious wish in life is destruction and is unable to communicate anyway. I'm just lost here. What is going on ? Didn't we just do a bit on how he "deserves rest". The oh so sweet embrace of death. That was the previous page. Why is it cancelled ? The least he could do is die. I basically hate the guy at this point. Top 5 anime villains, easy.
    5. Ah, this also means that not only he picked the stone beast over a normal life in some other planet with his master, he picked it over Nephrin, which now remains as the only immortal half beast being in the world wandering alone forever or until one of her sister child soldiers mu*ders her.
  2. If humans are fake beasts transformed by the visitors, and the beasts are just the original inhabitants of the planet, where did all the other races come from ? What is going on ? This is plot whole you can drive a missile cruiser through.
  3. What kind of all powerful beings decide they want to immigrate to a world completely unfit for them and full of mu*derous immortal beasts ? Like why ? Just go somewhere else. You can sleep and have the AI do everything, which is what happened anyway, but with the dumbest plan ever.
  4. Ah, the plan. Of course the human population would increase, why wouldn't it ? It isn't greedy or evil. Just nature. At least leave instructions on the danger of passing the arbitrary population limit or some form of magical population control. Anything. And why would you leave the child behind ?
  5. On a side note, it obviously would have made much more sense for the faeries and the reasonable part of the Winged Guard to split off. The faeries are probably still the mightiest military strength on the islands, they can and should fight for the basic rights of their race. Conquer the forests, etc.

I have very mixed feelings with this one. I really want to read it, but after watching the anime (which I absolutely loved) I'm not sure I have the heart to go through that a second time. I will keep this tab open until the day I can get passed my torn heart and read it. Despite all of this, I absolutely loved it. I love it so much that that is all I can say. There are no words to describe my feelings for this story. There is a... more>> quote I heard a few months back that I think fits this novel so well. It goes.

"There are so many stories where some brave hero decided to give their life to save the day. And because of their sacrifice the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a b*tch."

So far it's one of the best light-novels I've ever read. At first glance it might seem kinda cliche, with all that loli-warrior-harem stuff, but actually it shows us a really cruel setting. The protagonist, who only suffered troughout his whole life, the girls, living in... well actually they aren't even living... So yes, definitely worth reading. The translation quality is great (perfectly understandable, and easily readable), and it is one of those books, which if you start, you just simply can't put it down until the end. Wow, really amazing (in terms of light novels) it can stand up there with other bestselling novels (imho) outside the light novel demographic, heck I'd even recommend it to people whove never reas LNs before. As long as they get the general idea of heroes and stuff.

From the illustration I thought it was gonna be another battle harem with op MC but after I read the synopsis I was happy being wrong. To anyone reading this novel, it is ridiculously heavy (figuratively and literally), even if you are used to reincarnation stories from chinese webnovels. It dosen't ignore the emotions from the past and it carries them over (mainly due to the fact that it isnt a 'restart'). There is so much packed between the lines and I applaud the author for being coherent with what he has written down (something I find lacking in jp authors) and I greatly enjoy unpacking the little things the author wanted to convey. I havent even started about the drama, by which came down like the fury of a thousand suns (again imho) but I wont say much besides the fact that the drama (a little forced but seriously what drama isnt) is written well enough with good reason along with chracters that feel alive and not some 2D shite.

All in all, if you're out of stuff to read and want to wrench your heart a bit with some drama or looking for a fantasy based novel (the world building is subtle but great) with a focus more on character development and interactions (sadly not too much action but I have a feeling author knows how to write em well) cuz of boredom, please give this one a go.

If anyone wants to discuss things about anything send me a holler.

It is a good novel (as far I can see for now). This is a bit different than your average jp novels that you can find in this website.

This isn't about a OP protagonist who lives a happy life with his harem. Rather, it's about a [Broken] character in this new world. In fact, this is basically the novel's main selling point.

The summary describes him well in this regard:

A young man who lost everything five hundred years ago, the last living human awakened from a long, icy slumber.

Spoiler

The story might flare up your emotions as you progress your reading, with how bleak and depressing it can be. I don't think it's at the level of some tragic masterpieces, but it is more darker than your average japanese fantasy novels

It took me a long time to finish this novel, not because it's bad, but because it's too sad. Finally this month I decided to finish it and that was the correct decision.

In my opinion, this story is a perfect mix of fantasy and reality. It's fantasy because there's magic and stuff, but even with those stuff, a lot of things doesn't go as one wanted, hence realistic. As mentioned by others, the main plot revolves around struggle. How the MC keeps trying to do something, but (in some sense)... more>> fails in the end. I think many people, including me, could relate to that a lot.

The pace of the story is perfect, it's neither rushed or too slow. Whenever I read it, I could never stop until I finished the chapter. The character development is really noticeable too.

Overall: a really nice Light Novel. I'm really glad I didn't drop it. <<less
