The Second Coming of Gluttony

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

Writing this review olny for mature reader who have read quite a martial arts light novel, as they can tell what I m trying to say.

So with that said this novel is not bad but the powers our MC have are too broken for this kind of world like he can see stats and also predict danger level etc.

Also what with the s*upid reason author gave to make most intelligent person (yes talking about that contractor lady in the beginning) for giving him MF gold ticket which didnt appear in... more>> the world for long time for what exactly (dont tell me u believe that sorry excuse) and then things get little interesting as some action and story building starts, when suddenly you realize that fck it is same old sh*t of hero being the only mentally capable person in the whole world (which btw dont knw how to use his power).

then after all this he become 10 year boy who didnt got his testosterone yet so dont knw what does a women want when she approaches you seductively.

Gods who only have name as god are not even seen pulling any string or any hidden plot of there yet they r jst ornaments.

Women are only for to get h**ny audience and men are just exist because you jst cant leave them behind.

Overall this world is totally fine even if all people got change except Our MC as they are useless, brainless and have non existent part in the story. It doesnt deserve this rank 1 it have.

Thank you, <<less

Honestly the best novel I've ever read. It's an emotional roller-coaster the whole way that makes you want to hold on. The character relationships feel realistic, the world building isn't lacking or too large to grasp, and the MC doesn't have plot armor to save him. The MC is just an average person with a slightly useful skill, everything he's gained was payed for with blood and sweat, and not once does he feel unfairly overpowered or that he has an unfair advantage. The novel also has a fair bit... more>> of s*xual innuendo's that stop just as it's getting good, so if you want to feel hot and bothered and emotionally satisfied at the same time, this is the novel for you. <<less

The MC is very weak when placed in such a world but he is still stronger when compared to newbies. He has many believable flaws. He is just like a normal human. There are some really good training arcs and it always feels like he earned his little strength. The character growth is done throughout the series, you will see him grow little by little from every situation he encounters. The MC only gets a small part of his future memories and mainly the emotions of regrets remain which makes... more>> it a fantasy story with a little twist on usual themes.

Pros:
MC is weak and struggles a lot yet the action is short paced and is not uselessly stretched.
There are main characters deaths.
There is no nationalism or something like Korea is the best.
Dialogues between characters are realistic and enjoyable.
Character personalities make them feel like real people and they have their own opinions, morals on every matter.
Game elements are used rarely and properly.
MC is not a loner and has fun teammates.
MC power is very unique.
The world-building was done in a way which makes you get absorbed in the book.
And finally, the character growth was a joy to read.

Cons:
The starting use of the tutorial is too Korean-like.
In the early chapters, MC is not likable and indecisive. He takes time to grow into a better person.
There are graphic and disturbing scenes.
MC is not interested in girls so far despite it being a harem novel.
There are very few action scenes in the first 100 chapters so it might be slow-paced for readers who are not used to reading western books.

Overall it was a very solid read and I would highly recommend it. The story developments so far also point to some incredible future scenarios that I am excited to see. <<less

Pros:

Story, Plot, and Characters are all really good and mature. Nothing childish or really predictable.

If you like TNE's style of character interaction, this is somewhat close to that.

... more>> Cons:

549 chapters (completed) but rate of translation is only around 2 chapter per week. This means at this pace, it's gonna take 5 years to complete the translation...

I understand that the chapter length is around 2 times longer than general web novel chapters, but it's still too slow, I'm hoping at least 4 chapters translation per week, but beggars can't be choosers... <<less

Top tier novel imho the thing is the slow translations, I have nothing against the translator it's just the fact that I have seen some great novels die due to slow updates like Kotb, 2 chapters per week is slow considering the fact that the novel itself is 500+ chapters meaning it will take 250 weeks ? That's going to kill the novel itself as ppl will forget details about what is what and how the MC gained what he have and stuff like that, some other ppl will wait... more>> for more chapters to binge read them and by the time the novel reach 200 chapter, they would have already lost interest in the novel or stopped caring about it, I may be presuming too much but yea I have seen it happen before and don't really wish to see it happen to this 1, other than my fears about slow updates the novel is 1 of my top 10 so far. <<less

It seems like a wish fullfillment harem novel in a dark fantasy setting.

Pro:

  • to some extent dark fantasy (killing off of introduced characters, gory, etc.)
  • may have solid worldbuilding (many hints)
  • a few decent fights & dialogues
Con & inconsistencies (some) :

The entire setting of "redemption" in this case is ridiculous. The MC starts as scum of the world cheating, stealing and begging money from his family and ex-girlfriend while beeing an alcoholic. Then through magical "feelings"memories of his past life, a life and death experience from a paralell world tutorial and... more>> giving back the cash he owns his family, the author depict him as redeemed. Even his ex-girlfriend which he "damaged" the most with his behaviour, shows interest in him again when he joins the parallel world. Which she seemingly is also part of. What a great character development, right? By the way the MC starts out with the cheatskill magical eye of wish fullfillment. He abused it, lost it, got it back and now has a paralell world wishfullfillment experience. With at least 8? Different powers that he can unlock. What is: useful in his environment, dangerous, deadly, helpful in the future and so on. It's not a deus ex machina skill, never! He sure has to still think sometimes, but what a nice power to have to see the world like a questlog.

Consistency wise the magical "feelings" and his "chaotic" charactertrait are the worst. In both cases the author just use them as plotdevice when he needs them, in all other cases they seems to be "inactive".

This was a real hidden gem. I honestly regret not reading this before. I was putting off it before because of low chapters and later found out that it actually has very big length chapters which would be equal to like 150 chapters of the normal novel. It has enough content to make you feel satisfied yet hope for more.

I also was wanted to correct some misunderstanding regarding shops in the neutral zone. There was only 1 vip shop in the neutral zone which sold expensive items. Other shops such... more>> as equipment, spell book, restaurant were categorized under normal shop. It was a 30% discount for every shop. The free services which were mistaken as 100% were just getting free food from the restaurant. So MC does use other shops too not just vip one. Buying and selling using 30% discount is not really practical as the profit would be too low and waste time which was more important to MC than the points itself. <<less

The novel starts out great. It was really good until about chapter 300+, during which the MC and his team still require co-operation from other organizations and their help still matters. I would give the novel 4.5 stars for these chapters, as there are a few bad ones among them. But after he became the strongest in the other-world, things went downhill fast for me. So fast that I could only care as much as skimmed through each chapter, even skipping a few. And dropped it at around chapter 430... more>> while there are only like 60 chapters left. I don't even want MC to win at this point. I even wish that his whole team would be massacred and the bad guy wins at the end. Reasons as follow:

Spoiler

The MC was chosen to wield a holy spear (appear at very later chapter) which only accepts those who are lawful good. That said something that you could expect from the MC and how the MC had been in early chapters. This is why I love the story at first.

[collapse]

Spoiler

But, as soon as he gained enough power, he started purging. At first, against those with bottom morals, which is ok. Even though they even torture people for fun, a bit excessive, but ok, it often happens in Korean novels. Later reveal that 70% that die in the otherworld will also su*cide in the real world, the rest either become crazy due to memory loss or live with suicidal though. His team knows this, but still, they are happy to kill just anyone and so does MC. Later on, he would kill the whole Organization because their top brasses do not want to accept his rules. The chapter even named "You're Either With Us Or Against Us." Remember, most of those people will die in real life, too. So which he and his team did is as close as mass mu*ders. And they did it happily, like a way to reduce stress. Yes, seriously, they itching to go out killing humans, knowing what would happen to them in real life. Well, it's not mentioned, though, those who were killed are background characters, but still, after investing so much time in this novel, I just have to think about it. This is so much the opposite of lawful good and righteousness. What worse is that it was pointed out later for the MC, too. But just that, a few lines, and the MC is portrait as an ideal, again.

[collapse]

There is more.

Spoiler

Early chapter, the MC will always mentions Golden Commandment. Do good, receive good. Do bad, receive bad. Kind of like that. Well, it's never mentioned again once he gained strength to overpower the whole Paradise. And Gods forbid anyone does him bad. He and his team brutally torture and kill sh*t load of people? It's ok. Someone almost killed his sister? It's going to be a shitstorm. Yep, Golden Commandment. At this point, I began to hate most of his team members as well as the MC himself. As the point of development has taken the opposite path as it started.

[collapse]

Next up. The bad guys

Spoiler

The bad Earthlings to be precise. Earthling level up by contributing to Paradise. They need to do good for human society over there. The Goddess will "take note" and give them level up, granting them new power and such. So you can see, unless you contribute, you won't level up, forever remain a weakling. At the same time, you can view those that got to the higher level, reaching a top few, as people who contributed a lot. Yet they suddenly decide that they would betray the whole human race in Paradise. Betray the Gods that give them the means to travel between the 2 worlds because they think the enemy, the Parasites, still has the upper hand. What benefits are there for them to do that? You cut off your road to go back to your real-world for what? Basically, just a reason for the MC to be cool with killing people. It is just s*upid.

[collapse]

Spoiler

To make the battle with bad Earthling somewhat balance, they even throw in a level 7 and few levels 6. Which can be counted as very few, come in less than a few dozens. Early chapters would count them as "precious" and "crucial" as those are the only few that can actually contribute to the war against the Parasites. In the early chapter, at the battle where they have to face about 3/7 enemy commanders, they only have 3 levels 7, and the only 2 levels 8. This is to show how few there are. Well, those bad guys all got killed in the end, and it does not affect the human's power scale by even a bit.

[collapse]

I could say that there is "close to none" character development in the later chapters, only excuses to make the MC looks good. Just a few points that made me absolutely quit this novel before finishing it. Because if they liberate Paradise from the Parasites at the end, it would be a bad ending to me. <<less

Let's start by saying that I loved the setting of the story and the prologue and starting chapters set up a very interesting background. The fights, action and main plot are very interesting but damn... The MC is ridiculously s*upid.

He was 27 year old who had a girlfriend, gambled and betrayed everyone around him, even stealing from his family and extorting his gf. Then suddenly he becomes a beta male blushing when a girl looks at him. It's like two different people from the start of the novel to when... more>> he enters the other world.

Disclaimer: I love romance and harem when it is done correctly. I hate it when it's a placeholder for word count. The author makes every girl love the MC when all he has going for him is hard work, and the MC doesn't realize a thing. The world is a harsh setting where people fck because they have nothing to do and it is considered normal for women to give bl**jobs even in front of other people. People get r*ped, toyed, ravaged, tortured, but the MC behaves like a 15 year old who hasn't left his hometown. Be mindful that he even stole his sister's car. And suddenly this dude.... Ugghhhh.... I can go on forever.

If the author handled romance well or it didn't consist HALF the story, yes that much, then it would be a 4/5 because the action is really well thought out and continuous. But the MC change of heart/mind/soul (a different person actually) ruins things for me.

What I don't understand is how can you create such a cool cruel backstory and setting world and then drop a Bomb and change your so well thought out character with a generic Japanese beta male protagonist.. I guess the author must have gotten criticism for his other novel MEMORIZE and tried to pacify the crowd with a character they would find easy to digest while throwing all the cruelty to the side characters. <<less

I enjoyed the novel at first until around 170 or when the first war happened, after that is when it started going downhill and the people that don’t recognize it must have on rose tinted glasses.

Plot: Interesting concept ruined by lackluster planning. It’s bad when the novel about second coming makes the readers rather read his first life.

Romance: There is none, I don’t consider the so called “romance” in here to be an actual one considering the MC is super dense or ret*rded. (Would’ve been better if there was none)... more>>

Villains: The author f*cked up on this no doubt about it. For the Parasites that managed to destroy the Empire (Strongest force with peak magic engineering that no one can replicate) to actually fail to take out the others is just poor plot. Earthing weren’t even summoned yet but it just seems like they gave up to wait for Earthings to come.
Doesn't help that they do wave tactics instead of being smart for some reason.

MC: This is where it’s hard to say. We are constantly told he’s strong then weak over and over, without Mana anyone can beat him yet with it he’s super strong? Thats a plot hole since without Mana he has no technique, Thrust/Cut/Strike which anyone can parry but add mana and it seems like no one can match him. I understand mana adding power but it doesn’t cover up lacking experience and technique that enemies would take advantage of.

While it’s an interesting novel I feel like if a better author got ahold of it then this novel would no doubt be 4-5 stars. <<less

Great novel so far. The first chapters may push some readers away because of the MC personality but that's for the development of the character (like Overgeared's Grid). There are some cliches like other Korean novel (hard work yadayada), but it's one of the few works I've read where the protagonist (for the most part) thinks through his actions. Definitely a rising star and sadly undervaluated.

Honestly I'm kinda of baffled when it comes to this novel to why it is so highly rated. This is generic as hell. I mean wtf guys it follows the most boring plot route ever for character development.

Sad/Broken man -> death game time -> character is unfeeling badass that makes ladies panties moist -> character sees the pure evil dude try to r*pe a girl -> CHARACTER IS NOW PROACTIVE! -≫ cue training nonstop -> training complete? BADASS TIME

The thing is, is that there is no one real issue with... more>> the novel, it is just mediocre. It sucks as a death game to be honest spending a lot more time on every other aspect of the novel than the actually death game aspect. The romance is trying hard to rear it's head but MC is a beta male so have no hope (he is even called gay for f*cks sake by another chick for not making a move when she keeps sleeping in the same bed as him).

People keep saying this story sucks them in and I want to know how because it sure as hell is a grind for me. People are long winded as f*ck and it kills any naturalness in conversation and the author has an elementary ability when it comes to describing the scene. <<less

So where to start with this...

Firstly if you just want to know if this novel is worth picking up or just are curious about the high score it has, let me tell you: Go read it.

I read a ton of CN novels but then discovered KN, which I felt had better writing and not so repetitive plot (not 1000+ chapters of ongoing "plot" with minimal story). But even under KN this sticks out! My fave KN to this point is The Novels Extra. Why? Because you just don't know what... more>> will happen next. The world building is extraordinary and the side characters are fleshed out with distinct personalitys.

So why do I think it's up there with TNE? It's the writing! It's just so too good! The MC's motivation and choices make actual sense in this novel. Characters do behave like actual people!

There's so much more I want to say about it, but the best way is to just check it out!

Also if you feel like it please come back here and leave your opinion. Since the chapters are 2-3x the word count of other novels, the translator currently doesn't get good return for all the hard work he is putting in it. So to simply put it, we need more readers so he can put even more time into the novel. But let me tell you, once you started you will love this novel :) <<less

A really good Webnovel. Pity that there aren't many readers. The MC was tr*sh of tr*sh an addict to the gambling. He had strange power on which he relied to win at Gambling which led to addiction. And then his power also left him but the addiction remained. His family had given up on him and so did his Girlfriend. Too real for a novel. He blamed everyone but himself. But then he got a ticket to another world and eventually died realising how wrong he was and all he... more>> had were regrets. He asks to go back and his wish is granted. He wakes up from a dream and thinks that all of it is farce but still realises that he needs to change. Then things starts to happen as he had dreamt of.

The novel doesn't break any new ground (Hakamori, S&W or Oregairu) nor its revolutionary (kind of SAO which brought VRRMO/Isekai to the forefront) but what it does is reaches all of your expectations when it comes to Isekai. It uses cliches and fills in its world with interesting characters (with realistic personalities). I thank the Translator who even though is on Hiatus because of less readers and real life still chugs out chapter here and there for the English Readers. Thank You. <<less

This novel was unexpected.

It surprised me as I thought that the story would have the same content as every other novel with the same genre. However, it surprised me instead. I'm not going to delve deeper into the story as this was already explained by the other people who have reviewed before me, therefore, I will just put my thoughts of the thing I liked the most.

The thing that I've liked the most is the struggle of the MC to become a decent human being, he fell into gambling addiction... more>> and lived a life worse than a scumbag. He is trying to redeem himself as he awoke with a dream of his future self and the regret he felt from his past actions towards the people he loves. Unlike other stories with the same plot, the author took the time and care to explain the MC's emotions and the little changes that happen as he grows as a better person. He is still discovering himself one step at a time. <<less

I thought the protagonist would be an useless as*hole at first but thank God he got better and better along the story, the character development for his personality is really good, although he got seriously good innate ability it is not overpower and the power up he got is not instant for he has to train to the bone to get stronger, a really good gem so far, I hope it can maintain it's interesting story until the end

so far this is pretty interesting, though admittedly we're not far into the novel yet. The MC isn't a total a**hole or insane, nor an eldritch horror in a human body, which is good; one Yi Ji-Hyuk is enough (The Returner). He's not a goody-goody or a beta male with an overblown sense of justice that will get all his friends killed, either. Yes he has cheats but at least his come with consequences (he can access the other hims experience but his body can't really handle the fighting techniques... more>> so he pays for it physically). Can't really say much on the story yet since they're all still in the starter city and he's still building up his basic fitness levels. I'm curious about whats going to happen once he heads out in the world and how things will change since he's Invited rather than Contracted now.

edit:
I'm disappointed that this turned out to be yet another harem novel. That wasn't in the tags when they first started translating and I feel tricked. It was decent until then.

edit 2:

the MC suddenly changes from jaded and worldly to naively idealistic and dense and it really doesn't fit with his seedy backstory and character. Idealism is something he's already lost through time and experience and it's not something a person can just suddenly regain. It's like he de-ages and loses all his negative experiences (except when the writer wants us to feel sorry for him and drags up the family situation) and even the other characters his own age start talking about him as a promising youth instead of a 26 year old grown man. <<less

    • Way too over-rated. This novel started of very promising and then quickly became tr*sh.
    • I like the author's world building and second chance as a reformed scum aspect but the MC doesn't act like what he's described. Instead, he acts like an innocent (a scum who can steal and coerce large amounts of money from his family and GF is innocent, really author? He acts like a beta teenage virg*n instead of a grown man with an ex-GF) dense moron.
    • The harem was also very bloated to the point that it destroyed the interesting parts of the story by forcefully inserting new girl after new girl in every plot. Except for 1 or 2 girls, the rest are just bland and annoying. The ending destroyed any hope of salvaging this tr*sh of a novel and made it an even greater tr*sh.
    • The site is glitching. I'm upset that it changed my rating to 2 stars when I only gave it 1 star. Now I can't change it in edit.

It started pretty interesting, but after a while the actions of the MC get pretty uncharacteristic and it pissed me off so much that I dropped it. This is an adult that had a hot girlfriend whomst he undoubtedly banged, was rich as f*ck, became an abusive alcoholic gambler, had the balls to extort money from his ex to fuel his gambling, and now acts like a virg*n teenager in front of females. It's the wimpy Japanese MC syndrome, and it doesn't even make sense because of his backstory.

Anyway, I... more>> liked the main character a lot from the start, so the author suddenly changing his personality to that of a wimp made the story go from a solid 4 to a 2 for me. If you don't mind the wimp Japanese MC syndrome, go right ahead, this is the story for you. <<less

It was a great novel. Not something I'll re-read countless times, but entertaining, with some very intense moments.

Then why just 3? The side-stories (which happens after the story has ended), completely ruined it. If I could send a message back in time, I'd tell myself to just stop after the last chapter and skip those side-stories.

Basically, if you like action novels, then it's a great one as long as you don't read the side-stories.

... more>> If you want more details: three things really destroyed it for me. Mild spoilers ahead.

First: A girl drugged and r*ped a man, and pretty much everyone acts like that's no big deal. Even the girlfriend, soon to be wife and mother, berates her harshly for a minute, then some chapters later says that it was fate and that there was no way to fight it... I'm not against heavy subject like r*pe in stories, but the way the characters I loved in this story acts just makes me hate them.

Second: The author introduced characters from the same universe but from another story he wrote (or so I read in the comments, I haven't read it myself). While it might be exciting for those who know them, they basically trampled on all the main character's achievements, like it was no big deal.

Third: The main character's exceptional ramen making skill was just a nice new trait to know about him. During the main story, that is. In the side-stories, it is shown that it is so amazing that he could have resolved the whole plot in 10 chapters if he had just used that instead of fighting, so yeah, again, trampling on all the story so far, thanks, author. <<less
