Honestly speaking. If you're reading this, please note my advice.

If you're here searching for a romantic-comedy, fluffy story with the cute relationship developments in the middle of the palace, don't try to read and judge bitterly afterwards. If this novel doesn't live up to your expectations, you're in the wrong assuming the wrong genres reading the summary.

But if you want a realistic story, the battle of survival within the palace, scheming that taken years to built, some self-satisfactory, masks that has to be worn, and the weariness to choose the... more>> right person to trust, you're in the right page.

They did wrong and hurt you, so you hurt them. They wanted to kill you, so you have to kill them first. In order to survive and protect your loved ones.

But in the middle of cold-blooded war, there was haven. The person you could trust, the person you could love and love you back. Which made a nice ending.

The main characters are cunning. The writer is, too. <<less

the male lead and female lead knew each other when they were kids and they were doing their best to survive in their lives... while the male lead was aware of his love to the female lead, she didn't know of it until later... the personality of the MCs are pretty funny and smart... the novel was interesting in the opening... until certain parts of the novel makes me want to ragequit... the epilogue is pretty good...

Entertaining read but the dialogues were horrible. The conversations felt stiff and forced. The sentences were almost crude like it was put together just for the sake of having them. I don't know if it was because of the translation or the author just couldn't be bothered. Every time I encountered conversations like "I'm hungry" "You did not eat?" "No" "Okay, here food." "Okay. Thanks" I wanted to quit reading then and there.

The first time I read this was 5 years ago (2015) and now I'm here again rereading. The old time plot of historic battle of thrones and the ever messed up palace.

Still a classic when NU is not yet plagued with reincarnated and transmigrated stories. Those were the days LoL

It's certainly not well written. The conversation flows are stiff and robot-like. There's a lot of plot-hole, the schemes are crude, characters are shallow and 1D, no development, etc. The selling point is only smutty scenes

I can't help but compare this to other works with similar plot, and thinking this is a downgrade version. I don't see any point to continue reading this novel cause it's quite predictable with mediocre writing style.

The overall story is nice, but there are a few inconsistencies that prevent it from being really great.

It starts fairly well, with decent character and writing, but it suddenly changes towards a "revenge" plot, when the main characters had stated they wanted to live freely.

When it nears the end, everything starts to speed up a lot, to the point where you can ask if it wasn't intended to be quite a bit longer at first.

What's a bit sad is that in all of this, the main characteristics of the two... more>> main characters are mostly stripped, making them much less interesting characters.
Most of the "opponents" end up having unsatisfying death too, so much so that it contradicts the "revenge" motive for the killing.

Aside from this though, the story doesn't try to elongate situations pointlessly just to have 500 chapters, and there are very few characters that pop out of nowhere just to make new enemies, so it is a bit refreshing.

The translation is more than ok, and the decision to leave out the chinese "speech parts" (like 'bewang', 'nubi' and other terms that are usually used in these novels), making it much easier to read normally.
Obviously, leaving those out also costs it a bit in giving us a better understanding of how every character talks to each others, but too many of those terms really detracts from the flow for people new to them.

All in all, a very correct novel that is completely translated and very much worth a try, even if just for the parts before the "revenge" turn. <<less

Average novel, nothing outstanding but also nothing that puts people off. I would say that the only dumb thing in the novel is how oversimplified everything was.

It's okay. The characters nor the plot are as cunning, intelligent, or as analytical as the novel wants you to believe and the main reason for that is because the author doesn't understand "show not tell". Everything is spelled out for the reader, rather than dropping clues about the conspiracies of the palace or the plans of the protagonists, the author will simply have a character state them. Is character A cruel? Well rather than show the character behaving in such a way, the author will just have a dozen... more>> people call character A cruel instead. Is the mystery slowly unravelling? Well the next chapter has the mystery revealed from the perspective not of the protagonist. It's completely unsatisfying to read.

As for the MC and ML - the relationship is cute, the banter is sweet as first but the characters are both so, , dull. I wouldn't mind the dullness but they
Spoiler

do things such as mu*der or revenge if you want to call it that

[collapse]
and it has little impact on them outside of a sad paragraph. In fact, despite all the horrific things that happen, the MC and ML hardly react or change. MC and ML's problems are solved relatively easily with money, connections, and easy access to medications and poisons. No matter how serious the threat they face is, it doesn't feel all that serious because the way it's solved and reacted to (by MC and ML) is simply boring.

TLDR; I'd recommend the story to people who are new to stories of Ancient Chinese political novels or those who want to read about a messy family story line. <<less

Enjoyable, up until it wasn’t. For some inexplicable reason, the author decided to focus on “revenge” later on. The male lead was much the same for the story, but I ended up completely disliking the heroine for her actions in revenge. The characters just became too petty for me to continue reading.

40% smut and 60% political. I can't say I like it but I also can't say I dislike it. The political drama isn't that deep compared to others and can be easily seen through. Not much character development for MC and ML.

Kind of disappointed with MC because at the start of the novel she seemed strong but as the story progress she became a weak woman who needs the protection of a man, but that's also understandable since she's not a reincarnator nor transmigrator.

Also, is it just me bothered with... more>> the dialogues starting with an apostrophe instead of quotation mark lol. <<less

I can only blame myself that I finished reading the Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir just befire I started reading this story.

In comparison thus story's political intrigue seems like child's play, the characters one-dimensional, the romantic progression no depth, and the people too modern for ancient China.

Really, do yourself a favor and read Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, or Empress with No Virtue if heavy political intrigue is not your thing. Your welcome.

this was fun to read. Though I do wish the author had more scenes for FL to display her two-faced character as in the summary. ML on the other hand, was more in tune with his character and I felt like the FL kinda faded off the background while the spotlight maintained on ml. Their relationship is adorable, really liked their bantering as well as the second couple. Plot wise, it's quite good with how cunning most of the characters are, and the author does throw in several plot twists... more>> that I didn't see coming. A solid read, and its not too lengthy that things become boring. <<less

I like the relationship between the main leads and the (*cough) smut (*cough*).

The schemes and resolves were rushed... and the ML's decisions and moves were sometimes confusing. His reasons, motives and goals were all unclear.

I think almost of all characters lacked depth... some and cannon fodders and some characters' endings were tragic.

Spoiler

Among cannon fodders of this book, I sympathized with Pei Lam and Shi Ting... Pei Lam (crown prince) only want to be free but was forced on his whole life and when he thought he'll be free, he was imprisoned (why did Pei Jin did it?) and forced to end his own life...

... same as Yan Shi Ting, she never really did something wrong (except being snobby and flirty) but bc forced to follow the elders, in the end became crazy and died by the hands of the person she thought that loves her.

Even Pei Khan (13th prince) got bittersweet ending as emperor with Pei Jin's family leaving him.

Though I enjoyed this novel at first... I can't unsee the (many) plot holes anymore. Usually I ignore plot holes as long as they didn't make my brain churn with question marks, but this one does.
Spoiler
    1. In one chapter, the emperor's POV showed that he and ML didn't have a deep bond but he thought ML is a reasonable person. He did fulfilled ML's requests and his attitude towards ML was like an amiable but distant father. Even then, the emperor wouldn't let anyone look down on him though the ML's just an unfavored and powerless prince with no support. But the later chapters complicated their so-so relationship. I suspect that the author initially didn't plan to branch out this subplot, but decided to expand the drama, since the emperor didn't show the appropriate hostility towards someone whom he 'should' hate so much he wished to chew his bone.
    2. MC's parents. The parents might be divorced, since the mother moved out after the father married the princess. She gave birth to MC in the countryside and never returned to the capital. Then she died after years of working hard from pneumonia. The father rarely visited them because of his strong new wife, but why did he regretted it? It's unrealistic that an ambitious but poor man who has chosen power over love would regret his decision, and it was clear that he rarely cared about MC even after bringing her to the capital, with how the MC was treated by the stepmother showed
    3. Which brings me to this point, why would MC returned to her father's new household? She doesn't want to be there, the stepmom and half sister doesn't want her to be there, and even the father was reluctant but guilty. She just wants to fulfill her mom's wish of being fed, clothed, and live peacefully. And she's supposed to be a smart girl, so why would she live in the capital (with its poison and all) while she knew that everyone who looked down on her or hated her wouldn't let her live peacefully? She was even secretly poisoned. MC doesn't seem to be someone who cared for material comfort of the capital from what her clothes choice reflected, so why would she chose to return? What kind of smart, resourceful and unmaterialistic girl who'd rather suffer in the new family over making her own way? Author shouldn't have given her these traits if it wouldn't be used much, it's simply wasteful since ML looked more like the main character anyway. And I've never read a historical novel where a child from a broken marriage would return to the living parent's new household after the other parent's death
    4. And ML was described as someone who doesn't care about the throne, so why wouldn't he ask to live in his own fief after the marriage? He could've made it clear to the emperor and the princes that he didn't want to be involved and be an idle prince but he went on, faked his father's writing after all those palace politics happened (like father, like son) and be the next emperor. Incorrect characterization annoyed me
    5. The main couple's relationship. In MC's own words, she predicted that living with ML is scarier than death since she'd live with a bully. But ML married her under the pretense of saving her from catastrophe. And then, ML's POV showed that he smiled sarcastically after obtaining emperor's permission to marry because he couldn't wait to tease and torment the little lion (MC). When they truly got married I was like ????? because a bickering couple is only enjoyable to me if I knew that they bicker because they cared about each other, not for the sake of bickering. Who the heck would marry for the sake of bickering for life? By the end of the story, they already had 3 kids but still bickering as usual. As someone normal I neither would want to watch my parents bicker all the time nor marry someone who'd intentionally humiliate me verbally that doesn't care about my opinion. Did no one noticed that MC's soft and obedient mask was because there are people like ML whom she couldn't afford to offend but they intentionally lie or belittle her? And people called it teasing *rolls eyes* for pete's sake, read MC's POV again... she already called out that ML is a bully and a liar, and you'd rather believe that ML is teasing while the MC's reaction to him is like someone who met her bully whom she couldn't offend? Crazy.
    6. I was already confused when another ambitious prince was introduced who seemed like he wanted to marry MC for her father's support when everyone in the capital knew that she's an unfavored daughter whose father would be unlikely to support, so whyyy??? I don't believe that the ambitious prince was that s*upid.

The writing was full of holes, the overarching plot wasn't well-thought, and the characterization was subpar.

TL;DR: Fun main pair, short. Surprisingly bloody and grim at times. Recommended.

The main pair's relationship is based on teasing and being a bit difficult, but they are childhood friends and both clearly like each other so the relationship is all fluff. No drama. Justified further by the fact everyone else looks at them as prey so they really can't afford it.

There is a bit of a mismatch between the rom-com like interaction between the leads and their happy and loving relationship and the world in which they live, which is... more>> full of poisoning women and children, betrayal of spouses and family as well as a truly merciless struggle for power. The body count here is damn high. Translation quality is also high.

I have to say the story is a bit sparse, which isn't a shock given the short length of the novel, each chapter is quite short and there aren't very many of them. This makes the story feel somewhat rushed in the later parts and the ending is almost abrupt, there are only few minor loose ends left though.

Smut wise, there is a quite a bit of it and it is alright, not great, but it really isn't the focus of the story. There is a smut warning before each such chapter and you could skip or skim it and still have fun. <<less

Great novel! I enjoyed reading it😊 usually I don’t really like politics in novels but here it was interesting 👍🏼

Some scenes are really funny (actually laughed out loud) and the characters are likable ❤️

The only thing that I consider missing is the full appreciation between the main characters for each other.

I don’t understand why some reviews consider the main character cruel, if you live in a cruel world you need to take precautions and measures to survive or at least protect your loves ones. I personally feel like some... more>> of the reviews are harsh.

All in all, great plot with smut (and not the other way around (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)) <<less

It was good read. Some people might not like it some might. Every stories are like that. This story contains some gruesome scenes and smut scenes. Slow progressing story about their romance however they got married quite early in the story. The ML outshine the FL in the story, their interactions were fun to read. Had read it few years back than re-read it again.

It's kind of a waste that the story build up the FL as capable and clever but didn't give her many chance to show it.

Also, I hope the FL realised what the ML has actually done for her.

Spoiler

Like how FL thought the ML is bullying her by forcing her to study with him, but by doing that the ML was able to trick her into learning how to write and read

I honestly love this book. Warning, this is of historical setting; the palace, the throne, the imperial households, the power struggles of ministries and other plotting are the large center of the story. I don't understand why someone says its plot suddenly took turn into "revenge" path. It is in the summary, MC and FL is not as they seems, they wear masks. The story line never had been a revenge for MC, and the MC clarified it at the end. I can only call it karma for the Emperor... more>> and cursed fate for MC. The story line had always been revenge for FC, and she got her wish in the end. Also karma for her greedy yet weak father, and the cheap stepmother (seducing some else husband yet pregnant with other man's child tsk tsk)

Spoiler

When the Emperor asked at the end if all he had done; killing his brothers (which he never did directly), plotting against him, uprooting imperials household are all for the throne. MC denied and it is proven when in the epilogue the throne goes to his 13th brother. MC said all he had done is for his father recognition, to be his son. Since if you read the novel you know that MC had been rejected as early as he is conceived and where is the karma slapping the Emperor in the face? It is when MC answered him, it shows how similar they are in their pursuit of their ambition and out of all his son, MC is indeed the most similar to him. Without FC and their son (at this point), MC undoubtedly will behaved exactly as the Emperor had once. I also see how in control MC is with his deed, if Emperor had recognised him as his son earlier, all the tragedy can be evaded. Unfortunately, MC also had depth understanding of his father, so the story spins the way it is.

[collapse]

Every character got justified and their endings too. The author never forget or suddenly abandoned a character. Most important, every character stay true to their designated character. Once each character fulfilled their role, we can exclaimed "Ahh, so that is how it is", or "That is his truthful self. The retribution is acceptable."

I love the FC, she is cunning, tough, clever and can be tricky when she wants and for MC, don't even mention it.
Spoiler

They both had clear grudge; who they want to be dead and who they actually sympathize as victims of their revenge. Like FC stepsister. FC does not like her but don't want her to ends up crazy like that and even planned to take care of her forever since the grudge she had had always been towards that stepmother and her father (too bad that sister is doomed to be killed by the hypocritical crown prince). The MC had never spilled any of his brothers blood, directly and also didn't do revenge due to his beloved imperial uncle death by his father's hands. He wants to be a son to his father and he indeed manipulates many people personalities until the end to attain this (no one tells him why his father doesn't like him, what her maid mother had done; all the backing he got is when he was small, his uncle and adoptive consort mother protection towards all the unsightly things). The crown prince su*cide because he could never ignore his hypocrites sides and continues the act as white lotus once the reality is doused on him, his other imperial brother become too greedy making him easy to be lured but ultimately the ever suspicious Imperial Father strikes him with his own sword (I hate this ruthless Emperor so much). With such father, it is not surprising how all sons including MC got their wicked way of living

[collapse]
Since the beginning everything had been planned by him and even when he is about to be swayed until forgetting his original intention, he stay unperturbed, thanks to his wife and son (crying son). The black-bellied couple are very lovable in which they clearly aren't overpowered (no immediate backup such as family that stands behind them, need to work off in rural region in order to gain loyal subordinate). And their couple banters/jokes are the most precious gem of this book. The book is quite rushed towards the end but still enjoyable enough for me. <<less
