Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave – or the foolish – go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch!

Apparently this is one of the "classics", one of the novels many start out with...

This is the second IET novel I read (after Desolate Era), and with this I've come to love him. His books are always unique and engaging.

Like DE for me this book sometimes took a bit to long, however in my opinion there weren't too many fillers and all in all the story progressed quite good.

Good character development and nice characteristics (not arrogant, no harem/starting at girls,...). Typical IET.

The novel has amazing story development, the pace is excellent, everything plays out astonishingly well and that beautiful ending!

I like most of the characters because of their unique personalities and quirky attitudes but then there´re

I hate her to the end of the universe and back again. I understand the reason she was brouht into the story but even after so many chapters I can't think back to the story without thinking of my hatred towards that.. THING!

The reason for me not giving 4 stars is undoubtedly because of the world background, in my eyes it's perfect and easily rises CD from 4-5 stars. If I wasn't because of

I would seriously consider giving 6 stars (if it was posible :P)

I will keep this short. The beginning is slow, but I understand it was for plot development. The middle part of the novel is quite good; however, the last 1/3 of the novel was bad.

At one point in the middle of the novel, the author didn't give a crap about the world building anymore; it went right out the window. I was anticipating a grand adventure after the MC went to the higher realm, but it fell flat. Every character besides the MC becomes useless, along with Deux ex Machina... more>> in the novel. The author didn't give a crap anymore and wanted to wrap everything up. Everything was rushed and the ending was s*upid.

After finishing the novel, I enjoyed it, but no way would I read this novel again. I gave this novel a 3/5 because, at the end of the day, I enjoyed finishing the novel. Maybe it's because I hate dropping novels. <<less

Lemme just start by saying my rating for this novel is actually 3 stars and if it shows up as 4 stars it's because of my sausage fingers and the s*upid site won't let me change it, but anyway...

I'm ashamed to admit that it took me about 150 chapters in to realise that this novel is from the same author as Swallowed Star and this realization immediately soured my entire day. Reason being that I could already guess at that point exactly in what direction the story was heading. And... more>> just as I'd suspected, the plot started developing in the same direction that caused me to drop Swallowed star shortly after it went premium.

This story suffers from practically all the problems that irqued me in Swallowed star.

First is the fact that literally all other lifeforms ar naturally vastly more talented than humans and can curb stomp them at the same level.

Second is the fact that the training and strength acquisition template the author set in the beginning eventually gets dropped and ones power is then greatly reliant on their understanding of the ever ambiguous "Laws", which is honestly just an excuse for the author to keep churning out more and more powerful foes without having to properly iterate on why they're so much more powerful than the MC. "Because he is a full god while MC is a demi god". "Because even though they're both demi gods he has a higher understanding of the laws than mc".

Then there is the fact the the mc's power increases in proper order while the level of his foes keeps constantly making massive spike out of nowhere. For instance the authors keeps putting huge focus on the mc's study and improvement in speed yet the MC is hardly ever able to actually outmatch any of his foes in speed. The MC is almost always being pit against enemies far above his league who all of his various insights and gains are almost completely innefective against to where he constantly has to be saved by his more powerful allies and invincible plot armor. Halfway through the story the mc's buddy accidently ends up releasing thousands of people vastly more powerful than the MC and his squad, some of whome IMMEDIATELY decide to engage in hostilities against the MC and his squad, now the literally have to sit around and endure the people of their homeworld being slaughtered in vast quantities all over the place until their more powerful allies come back from their fieldtrip and even they are gonna need super thick plot armor to have any hopes of diffusing the situation. The process just keeps reapeating itself no matter how many insights the MC gains or how hard he trains. I honestly can't recall a single time where the MC was able to overcome an enemy a level above him 1v1 through pure skill. The MC also seems to suffer from that annoying syndrome where his overconfident keeps putting him in horrible situations yet he just never learns. When the enemy seems down for the count, go for the kill! Don't f**king wait till they use some bs self-sacrifice method to suddenly explode in power and turn sh*t sideways!!

All in all it was a decent ride but after 400+ chapters I'm gonna have to drop this. <<less

I simply loved this book.

Now I could go on and on about why I loved this book but I will name just a "few" as to why I liked it so much.
    1. The MC has a very clear goal, and the relationships he forms are very beneficial to these goals.
    1. Lots of chapters and pages. I know, this sounds simple and unimportant but many stories are just to short imo.
    1. The book never deviates from its intended ending. It almost feels like the author planned the whole book out before beginning to write.
    1. The character was super duper family/friend oriented. If they needed his help he was there, every promise he made whether it was vengeance or just plain returning favors he completed.
    1. The background information was neither too much or too little. Everything was juuuuust right.
    1. The last reason is fairly simple. The world was very well created, the characters roles were very straight forward.

One of the first novels I've read. It was okay other than the ending but after reading other novels such as Stellar Transformation it makes a little more sense. I recommend you to read it because this novel is like classic so most of people is read it and even if you don't like it, if you're planning reading on other IET novels they are all in same novel universe.

For me this novel is average

At least the MC has depth of feelings, not that racist, the story and pacing is Above average, the OPness are explainable, one of its drawback is its like the your typical Chinese Novel with Overbearing Enemies, Self proclaim Godness with full racism with too low of ideals, Plus the MC has too much of Luck factor in his life which make his full story like Bullet train with no branching of a plot line just your typical Chinese defeat this guy then the... more>> another, Plus the most disappointment is the fast End Arc of this Novel, , I mean its fast, it destroy your immersion with MC's self Opness comes from himself became I need this ORB to be godly so that I can beat this Guy and became the most powerful guy. Well when I first read this I could have rated it 4.5 but when I read lots of novel I feel this just your typical Chinese novel with few flaws....

Thats it and thnx, dont be discourage of my review and of the others... Give this novel a chance at least you can have sometime for you favorite Novels to catch up cause I know there are better ones with better story but still in progress of translation so read it..... <<less

This is one of the first Chinese novels which I have read, & I absolutely adore it! It's got variation in plot, different worlds, and unlike many novels the protagonist is monogamous! So u know that the story isnt going to be filled with useless girl chasing rubbish which does absolutely nothing for the plot except increasing the length :'D

what an amazing novel. For those who love xianxia, it's perfect. A romantic faithful main character, hard-working and not always the best. Magic and fantasy. Many cool, varied experiences wait the reader. I'll definitely start reading IET other novels.

btw. I recommend reading his previous novel prior to reading this one. It's stellar something.

I really enjoyed Coiling Dragon! Like many, this was my first proper wuxia novel (up til reading this, I was mostly reading translations for Japanese light novels) and I got thoroughly hooked. The story certainly isn't without its faults but it's a fun read regardless and I would definitely recommend it as an introduction to the genre.

Overall quite enjoyable. Dragged on a bit later on (like the whole book in the underworld and the death sovereign could have been mostly skipped) and the MC could be a bit annoying at times, but the dao-seeking parts of the story were really good, the brotherhood with Bebe was heartwarming, and the worldbuilding was interesting. The catalyst to the MC's eventual rise to ultimate power was a bit too coincidental for my tastes, and of course the ending was kinda weak, but lets be honest here, it's really hard... more>> to satisfyingly end "rise to the ultimate peak"-type stories.

Solid 4/5. Definitely a good recommendation for a first cultivation novel for people new to wuxia/xianxia and has enough depth to keep even experienced CN-readers interested as long as they're not too jaded. <<less

This story was the one that brought me into world of xianxia, and it's a good place to start. It has plenty of suspenseful action as well as hard working cultivation, as well as some valuable relationships.

However it does have it's flaws. After a while the goal of seeking power becomes a trend which may be experienced as repetitive. Also, the protagonists constant pursuit of power does get in the way of his other relationships as he gradually outstrips his family and friends. Although this conflict is briefly hinted at... more>> it is never really delved into, leaving what might have been a worthwhile subject about an absent father mostly ignored and unexplored.

Inspire of this it does have some fantastic battle scenes and scenery, with also a constant search for a means to resurrect lost friends, and above all an ending that hints towards other related series as well. <<less

This is one of the first Light Novel that i've read. Just like the others, my review is going to be slightly bias.

After reading this novel, I fall in love with reading other xianxa or wuxia themed novel.

I still recommend this novel to other who haven't read it. It is ABOVE AVERAGE in terms of story line, world building, and any others.

... more>> It has a plot armor (which is dominant in every novel) but it is better than other novel.

Just read it. The best thing about this novel is it is already complete. You don't need to wait for an update because it's already finished! <<less

First novel I have ever read and tbh its the best one I have ever read. The pace is amazing, not rushing but not slow. The MC isn't your typical harem seeking, spineless cowards who for some reason every girl on the planet is attracted to. Well id go on explaining more but I honestly think this is the best novel out of the around hundred I have read so drop what you are doing and read this. I promise you won't regret it. READ IT AND DONT STOP. He... more>> is what I look for in all main characters but yet can't find it cause all authors have boners for harem seeking main characters or MCs that are wimps but all the girls love him for no reason. The romance is built with a foundation and I not want to spoil anything so if you like romance and action and epic ness read this novel rn! After like book 4 or 5 you won't be able to stop reading. <<less

The first Chinese Novel I've ever read and the reason why I started to read a novels. This novel is one of the best novels created so far and the author "I Eat Tomatoes" a man who's leteracy works rivals others through its good morals rather than those other pe*verted works out there. This novel throughly teaches its readers to be hardworking to follow your dreams and etc. I like how The MC and Heroines role play out. Truely magnificent novel. "Through death do as part".

this novel is the first CN and xuanhuan/xiaxia type novel that I read, and so the score is based on what I thought about it then. When I first rad it it was exciting and interesting. With concepts like cultivation, qi, laws/daos and things that makes xuanhuan novels what they are.

looking back on it, from now after reading a few more of these books, I'll say that its fairly interesting in its own way. Unlike other novels where the MC struggles alot to get stronger or have random mobs blocking... more>> his way for the sake of it. Coiling Dragon doesn't have that, instead Linley been getting progressively stronger throughtout the novel without much or any trouble. And while this is something I like, it might turn off people who dislike a MC who doesn't face struggle or challanges and is seem as "strong" most of the time.

A thing that personally irks me about this novel, is the lore of it. Although the laws and their components are intersting. There is a lot of thing that IET draws ideas and locations from chinese myth and ledgends, but other than using it as a name and maybe a breif description there is not greater purpose for many of these. The lore and world building of the novel is basic and kept at a minimium with nothing explained if it has nothing to do with the story. This makes the world of coiling dragon narrow in its own way. And although it might not bothers some poeple its something that I see as a drawback to this novel. As for the lore and the link to chinese myth and other ledgends that can be forgiven as xuanhuan novels tend to not go into detail about that sort of deeper connection. <<less

This would probably be my favorite if I hadn't read ISSTH first.

The plot could absolutely not be any better. Elements of the story are introduced early on and the relevance is shown later, since the author clearly thought this story out pretty damn well. Females and friends aren't just random side characters; there's a profound loyalty shared between all of them. The arcs weren't cliche, and his vengeance for his parents and friends really fueled the story.

Linley was a good natured person unlike the ruthless try hards in MGA and... more>> TMW. Again, the plot really layed on thick so the character development was top notch.

I was happy to see an MC who was acknowledged for his brilliance instead of the ones constantly accused of 'offending some big and reputable clan'.

5/5 <<less

Very good story, characters, It is very immersive with its detailed description

Once you binge read this and really get into it, making it seem almost as if you're seeing vivid pictures of the novel. (Through your imagination though)

It is well recommended as the first novel in xianxia, but is not a must. Covers the basic terms but if you want a more detailed understanding of the cultivation world then the sequel is very good. The ending leaves you wanting more, hence the sequel.

The language is not too complex and... more>> does not require you to look up the words in a dictionary too much. (Differs for everyone)

Note that manhua differs from the novel. <<less

Coiling Dragon is by far one of the best novels I have ever read and I am an avid reader of just about anything. This story is exciting, the characters are fun to follow, and the action is at a level where it keeps you on your toes. Personally, I ended up binge reading this one and couldn't put down my tablet in my spare time for days. I love this story and I'm probably going to take the time to re-read it from the start to enjoy it again.

This was the first novel I binge-read so to speak from beginning to end, despite the mind-numbing no of chapters I never felt bored. This is a well done novel which has a consistent pace (as compared to those in the genre) but kept the scenarios refreshing.

Highly Enjoyable and a Must Read.
