Foreboding clouds raced across the skies above the city.

Three years ago, as a consequence of Commander-in-Chief Jiang Ting’s error in judgement during an anti-drug operation in Gongzhou, a chain of explosions occurred at the scene and caused the Narcotics Division to suffer heavy casualties. Now three years later, Jiang Ting, whose flesh and bones should’ve faded from existence after dying at the line of duty, actually miraculously woke up from a vegetative state.

His heroic soul could not rest – he must return to the mortal world from the depths of hell and exert all that he has in order to bring the bloody and inconceivable truth to light.

a book executed so perfectly, it will leave your toes bloody. (yes)

Po yun is possibly one of the best thriller-crime-action novels I’ve read, it’s absolutely captivating in every way possible. A hair-gripping plot with a bit too many secrets to uncover, if the end wasn’t satisfying enough- at least your hair would be tangled by then.

Pros:

CHARACTERS:

  • Our MC is an actual treasure, literally the best boy. If you’ve read Erha you’d know where these two MCs fall into. He’s actually really mysterious for most of the book and his actions seem questionable a LOT of times, but in the end he’s badass and you’ll only love him till the end.
  • ML is actually a bit out of favoritism for a lot (the straight-man syndrome) but he’s so funny and it’s obvious shang jie is doing it for the laughs, so laugh it off! He’s your rich police man (and he will not hide it)
  • Side characters will have to include Yan mama and papa because I want them in my life.
  • the antagonist, oh dear... he is so so
    Spoiler

    just saying!
PLOT

  • So. Well. Written. Mysteries are so hard to write because you got to sprinkle the perfect amount of hints, keep the story fresh while also baiting readers to read more. This book does all that flawlessly.
  • The story is actually really interesting and is pretty realistic too.
ROMANCE

  • The romance didn’t take up much of the book but the undercurrents are there. Lord you can feel the tension and the absolute amount of pain, this isn’t just ‘love’ but trust, understanding, position, and the future.
  • Both characters actions can be understood but this isn’t some angsty dogblood romance but a genuinely heart wrenching love story so get your tissues ready.
cons:

I actually find every aspect of this above expectation so I can’t really pinpoint anything that would put readers off except for Yan xie’s male chauvinism lol.

Overall rating: 5/5. Personal rating: 5/5

SPOILER

Not sure if this is a spoiler but Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey is constantly playing subconsciously in the background in the early arcs. As someone who is obsessed with this song, I was super excited about how this would be interwoven into the plot. I liked the song but got obsessed after I watched The Great Gatsby so I was personally looking forward to how this song would come into play as the plot progresses, especially since the song lyrics was heavily scattered throughout the earlier arcs.... more>> But I was really disappointed when my expectations weren’t met. It seems the author just liked the song and wanted to put it in like a bg music? I suppose some words that the main antagonist said in the last arc could refer to the song but compared to how rampant the song lyrics was written in, during the earlier arcs, I was honestly expecting the song to be be more significant in the story. I kinda felt like the author forgot about it as the mystery got thicker. Anyway, this is just my personal opinion as someone who loves the song and was excited for the author to do something more but was left disappointed. If anyone thinks I missed anything, some hints, some implied meaning or some finer nuances that I missed regarding this point in the novel then I hope I can find your comment in the reviews or discussion forum. (I was today years old when I realised you can’t reply to reviews here.)

End of Spoiler

Plotwise, it was fun and gripping enough. The cases were beautifully linked together and the mystery keeps you excited and wondering about the reality behind the happenings and Jiang Ting’s personality. The gong might be a tad annoying trying to constantly keep the heteronormative agenda and certain comments about women. But I guess it’s also funny cause he’s kinda like a “ hysterical woman” at times. <<less

Totally recommend it. The cases are well-thought out, the twists are unexpected, and it gets unexpectedly hilarious at points where it should be serious.

Especially Yan Xie (the gong) 's mother Zeng Cuicui.

"When your son was 18, I felt that him marrying a princess was enough and to spare. When he was 25, I felt that if he just found a girl from a good home he could more or less pass his days. Come thirty, my pathetic requirements have already fallen to female, alive, and younger than me."

Mother Yan then took out a white paper from her bag, slamming it down before Father Yan with a bitter and hateful air. "Right now? I've even begun to self-study "The Problems of Gay Marriage"! What else can I ask for! You tell me, besides supporting him with a gold-plated shovel, what else can I do?!"

THIS IS A GREAT NOVEL. A MUST READ.... sorry I lost there.

the cases are very well-thought, intriguing, and connected to one another! this kind of plot device should be more appreciated. also, the plot twists are so amazing, I almost got misled. but eh, as prolific mystery lover, some things just can't fool me :p

thing that I notice much is the pace. the pace is good, not too fast, but not too slow so readers just want to read more and more. and indulge in this novel, not able to... more>> stop. the jokes are also fresh, lightening some heavy and depressing scenes. yeah... this one also has many knives, aiming toward your heart. Captain Jiang, you are just.... *sobs*

i really feel grateful to the author for making a gong as bright as Yan Xie, to complement the ice queen (?) Captain Jiang Ting. they're really a pair matched by heaven. ofc, at first it's not like that, but after several life-death situations, they really become a pair that understand each other, able to guess other's mind just by glancing or deducing the actions. you may think, because the shou woke up after a long coma so he was weak af. nope, nope at all. he still could do crazy shits, not to mention he's smart and tend to challenge death. or thinking maybe the gong was just all muscles with no brain. still nope. he was smart in his own way, added to his perfectly healthy and strong body. if not, how can he find out Jiang's intentions? in short, they're a perfect example of power couple, a great tag indeed.

not to forget, there's still smut. me like, me approve (◡‿◡✿)

A contemporary urban crime story about a handsome and charismatic gong that can participate in every event of a decathlon, can shoot someone's head off from a hundred meters away, can dismantle a bomb bare-handed, and loves to show off when he has nothing to do & a shou that is calm no matter what because he's already prepared to meet his end at any time.

This series blowing up among international readers will just be a matter of time when there are enough translated materials published, so make sure you keep it bookmarked ;)

You're looking at one of my favourite bl couples here, and among the Chinese bl community, the ML Yan Xie holds an honorary title as one of the "Four Great Coquettish Semes/Gongs" (四大骚攻). Despite having a pretty heavy plot with many cases to solve, the romance is interwoven into the over-arching story nicely and the book satisfies both my cravings for... more>> action and romance. I've also read the sequel called "Swallowing the Seas" (吞海) and am waiting eagerly for the third book! <<less

It's a crime-solving story, with a super smart, brilliant, ice-cold beauty x also smart annoying rich as*hole but kinda competent cop.

I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. The MC and ML both are interesting characters whose chemistry is believable and entertaining. It's a slow burn for sure: ML and MC only kind of get it on at the halfway mark of the story. It's much more a detective novel, with the MC and ML solving a series of cases together (which all end up being tied together in the... more>> ending lol).

My favorite part is actually the epilogue haha

Spoiler

They get married! It's a happy ending, surrounded by friends and family. I definitely thought Jiang Ting wasn't gonna make it at several points in the story, but he f*cking made to the end and gets his happy ending with a hot ass boyfriend. *Sobs*

i finally finished this....

this is a detective bl story and it's very well-loved in china. I really enjoyed it at first but I had a lot of problems with this.

what I liked: this is set in modern times and I actually picked up a lot of chinese internet slang reading this, lol. mutual physical intimacy (a bit less dubcon than usual lol), desire, realistic ages (everyone's 30+) that correspond to their job ranks, the humor and the characterization (I thought Yanxie was going to annoy me but he was quite... more>> cute).

what I disliked: instalove (or more like instalust), the imposition of heteros*xual dynamics onto an m/m couple, casually ignorant jokes and comments, the intense angst and almost excessively emotional scenes... <<less

If there's only one word I could use to describe this novel it would be "Brilliant".

But what an understatement it would be.

Because "Brilliant" wouldn't justify the show-stopping tension that Huai Shang created in Po Yun. It wouldn't do justice to one of the most iconic couples I've ever had the fortune to encounter. It would be wrong to close this book with a "Wow! That was brilliant" and move on with my life. It just wouldn't.

... more>> Because...

Po Yun wasn't supposed to be my type of novel. It's too hectic, too insincere. I read books to escape from the miserable reality, why would I want to bury myself in another pit of a twisted story, where the ugliest of the society were presented and laid bare? My heart yearns for something warmer, something more tender, something that makes me feel utterly defeated by the time I close the book. And Po Yun was none of that.

But the funny thing is

I am still wholeheartedly enamored by Po Yun. I still love each and every single syllable in this novel so painfully. It's artificial. It's over the top. It's a story about a handsome rich guy pursuing another handsome rich guy, which I've seen about a gazillion times. But god damn, how could this worn-out trope lure me in so easily and beautifully?

Maybe because Huai Shang is an excruciatingly talented writer and she just planned everything so well. Her storytelling ability is exceptional and while her words might not be the most soul-wrenching, she got to the point and wasted no time drowning you in the fictional world she so meticulously created. Once you're in, oh darling, there's no way out, cos this author, and I'm saying this with the nicest intention possible, is cunning.

Or maybe she just so happens to write a main character so incredibly self-destructive that it's hard to look away from (Yan Xie, I'm looking at you). It is simply a miracle how he grew up till the age of 30 without anyone smacking the day lives out of him yet, but despite that, I love him, them, each and every single one of them. Po Yun started with Jiang Ting, the fragile-looking ex-police officer who just woke up from a three-year coma and boy oh boy, this Jiang Ting kept surprising me from one chapter to the next. He's cool, smart, cunning, and was described by some of his peers as even frightening, but at the same time, even with the implied knowledge that he might not be at all what we all thought he was, I would trust him with my life. Cos, that's how Jiang Ting makes me feel. Safe. He makes you want to entrust with him all your secrets, despite the fact that deep down you know, he is one deeply unreliable character.

And as the story went on, the once very very punchable existence in the name of Yan Xie also slowly and subtly grow alongside us.

This is a story that is packed with twists and turns accommodated by perfect characters build up. A pretty darn cold case solving novel, filled to the brim with warmth, emotions, human feelings and their tendencies to react in certain circumstances life throws at them.

This is a story about drugs, chemical substances and exciting technologies yet never once forgot to provide a home for the softest spot of our hearts. For our characters, for all the art appreciators.

It's Jiang Ting and Yan Xie's stories and everyone in between... <<less

Great cases, bad romance. I cant believe I'm saying this but, romance wasnt needed here. Idk why but Yan Xie as a cop is a great guy, but as a seme, esp beung pushy af and not taking Jiang Ting's objections and wishes into consideration. I get that he is supposed to be a 2nd gen chaebol who has been getting away with stuff and that's a part of his charm but that's exactly the kind of black belly CEO male protagnist I hate.

Another thing is how he treats Jiang... more>> Ting in their personal life. He respects JT professionally but his "jealous boyfriend" shtick is really getting annoying esp when JT even talks to other officers and colleagues, esp female ones like Yang Mei or Xiaomei. Not to mention, him calling JT as "pretty, fragile, weak, flower, wife" etc. The guy is a decorated officer and your former CO, for chrit's sake. I get that he is being "protective" but him acting like JT is a brain-damaged infant is really irritating.

This is probably the first BL where I want a bromance/censored adaptation because the cases are too good and I want to see JT being a badass while not being treated like damn broken doll. <<less

I loved the novel so much I just had to make an account and say something about it. It's just amazing and it truly deserves its popularity.

Plot: as everyone else has already pointed out, the author really did put a lot of research into the novel, so the cases are fascinating and their outcomes are always unpredictable, often leaving you on the edge of your seat.. And sometimes leaving you questioning whether this novel truly has a happy ending. So please start the novel without reading any spoilers (it'll make... more>> the knives stronger too ^o^))

The characters are charming and multi-layered, which makes even the side characters memorable and "strong" enough to carry their own novel.

As for the leads, the main couple is what happens when you pair a rich police vice-captain, who happens to have a circus living in his head, with a mysterious "cold" ex-captain, who is presumed to be dead and who, for some reason, is willing to help him. I feel like giving away more wouldn't be fair, but there's much more to them than meets the eye and the main couple is very popular for a reason, both as a couple and as characters. A fateful meeting which would make the former find the person he'll treasure and risk his life for.. And would save the latter in every sense of the word. "I used all of my luck in this life, to exchange for you. Thank you for bringing me back to this world, Yan Xie."

I really can't wait for the translators to start translating arc 2! <<less

The investigation part is good but the romance ruined it for me because double standard strikes again.

Yan Xi gets jealous even when Jiang Ting talks to girls but he himself has got no problem letting bar girls sit on his lap and kiss his neck. (In swallowing the seas).

It's the same old story, the ML / Seme can wander outside but authors will still defend them and say it's a plot requirement and arrange various excuses.

While the Uke / heroine can't even talk to others.

Brilliant writing, plot is intricate and pacing is excellent, increasing heatedly at the end for an explosive (lol) finale! Super intense cop drama focused on crime solving, although all crimes the cast happen to investigate point towards a major international drug kingpin with unexpectedly deep ties to the ML... Both MC and ML are very smart and determined (and tall, rip).

Extremely well-written and well-researched; a fascinating web of everyone both in the criminal world, and in police departments across the country, good characterization and a cast of many well... more>> developed characters. Female characters do not take the back seat, are as complex as other characters, and play important roles in the unraveling of the plot.

We dig into the ML's past to unravel the real story. The cases are intricately and inextricably linked, from the first few paragraphs of the novel to the end. The continuity and tightness of the plot is phenomenal.

This story digs into the themes of control, isolation, (medically defined) psychopathy, orphaning, the damage caused by narcotics, crime, corruption, etc. All of the cases and scenarios are extremely detailed and well-planned. All the characters are deep, and as we continue to unravel the story, HS reveals the different histories and motivations masterfully.

In short, I highly recommend this novel. I hope the rest of it gets translated soon, as this really is a gem in the world of danmei.

Side note: I read the raws for this one, so this is largely based on the raws. I did look at the translation by BBTL, and it seems to be pretty good. The MTL version reads a little awkwardly.

Additionally, I will note that the R18 scenes of this novel are enjoyable, although a bit jarring in their supposed context, due to pacing and style. I would recommend treating the censored version as the full novel, and throwing in the R18 as extras. <<less

I finished the rest chapter by mtl. Some parts are difficult to understand, but still, it was an intense reading.

This novel has quite similar vibe with Mo Du (Silent Reading), where the MC is deeply entangled with the villain. While the ML is the leading investigator.

But in my view, this novel is more intense in the action parts. And I have to say that the ML is really a tough nut to crack, his body is so resilient & his luck is very good! This story is actually fantastic? I love the two mains. Their personalities are very contrasting yet harmonious. The flow and pacing of the plot is great too.

You can tell the author did a lot of research for this novel. I also suspect they might have studied advanced chemistry or undertook pharmacology as they understand pharmacokinetics and effects on neuromodulators.

Sometimes I feel that MC is quite OP and things fall into place easily, but hey, still digging it ;)

3.5 rounded off to 4 just for that rating bc its not That bad

an enjoyable and mildly satisfactory read. Loved how all the cases were intricately woven together. The characterization was pretty good and the pacing was just right, absolutely perfect for this novel. I liked that good balance of intense action, investigation and thrill with a tap of mystery. The twists and turns caught me off guard here nd there but tbh, the flow was great so I wasn't "surprised" by half of the things but the plot points... more>> went over really smoothly and I like good writing so I won't complain that I predicted a couple things. The aesthetic of the setting was so obvious I just cant not predict half the things. Nonetheless, the story was good. It held my attention. That is enough.

tho I was absolutely sick at that constant imposition of heteros*xual dynamics to the point it delayed my reading. I had to put it down a couple of times bc I was absolutely sick with the word "wife" and "daughter in law" and "male hormones" "alpha aggressive" idk sh*t among other things. The blatant misogyny and like jiang ting's comparison to a "woman" in a fetishistic and misogynistic context had my mood ruined tbh so like meh would never read the sequel or anything else by the author. Also while am at it, meh to casual racism too.

anyways the story was great. I had fun every time yan xie my beloved got hurt badly it was satisfying tho nothing cathartic in this novel (he was too OP in that regard which sed, jiang ting's character got ruined bc of reasons but I was hoping till the end for yan xie to get hurt SOOOO badly but nah op went the boring and predictable jiang ting route which ok thumbs up) even if the premise and the story tried building up to it. <<less

Yes. Read it. Go read it

Whether it's plot, romance or characters, they're all well written.

Jiang Ting... oh boy. He is a VERY mysterious character. You'll never find out the whole truth about him until the last book! How the hell did the author pull that off? Idk... He also cared so much for Yan Xie!

Yan Xie. His 'straight disease' was annoying at times and as other reviews had said, he made some... not-so-nice comments about women and also keeps saying that Jiang Ting is the wife... Still... with his character,... more>> I'm not sure how much of it is just some dumb stuff he says without thinking and what he actually said with seriousness. Bcs at the beginning, he was actually intimidated by Yang Mei. And also, in my opinion, he treats Jiang Ting well. Also, keep in mind that most of his straight disease stuff comes from his parents and how he was thought by them. Bcs they also call Jiang Ting daughter-in-law... so yeah, if you want to blame someone, you can blame them. But I like the fact that they didn't even care if Jiang Ting was a man. They just wanted Yan Xie married lol. In my opinion he is a good person, that even after his best friend betrayed him, he still couldn't hate him fully. Which brings me to Qin Chuan... his best friend... their friendship is tragic man... but I love them both. As friends and individual characters. Qin Chuan is very intelligent. A very interesting character.

I would also like to add for fav characters: Chu Ci (let my boy be happy), Han Xiaomei (the biggest Yan Xie x Jiang Ting shipper! Also, Yan Xie, give the girl a break), Ma Xiang and Yang Mei (her and Yan Xie are the definition of Frenemies! They bicker but they help each other when needed)

Now, the romance. Both Jiang Ting and Yan Xie risked their lives for the other multiple times. I could feel how much they loved each other. But... I could also feel that they didn't trust each other fully until the end bcs of Jiang Ting being too secretive... I don't blame him for that tho.

Plot. It was interesting! The main antagonist, The King of Spades, is so annoying! And I love it! Bcs I hate it when I love the villain when I'm supposed to hate him you know? So yeah, he is hating material. He is interesting... more or less anyway... He's an awful awful man

Conclusion? Read it. It's a good one! <<less
