Everyone in the City of Jing thinks that bestowment of marriage between Xian Junwang and the daughter of the Yi’an Marquis House is to insert a fresh flower into manure.

Xian Junwang was that fresh flower and the di daughter of Yi’an Marquis House was that manure that was not liked.

It is said that what is heard is false, seeing is believing. Who knows what the truth really is?

Up to c11. The MC seems... flat. She doesn’t have a personality besides being lazy; what’s her motivations, what are her opinions? I just don’t get it. She’s s’posed to be reincarnated? Where’s the modern thinking? This has great ratings, so I’m hoping her personality comes out later on, but it’s been almost a dozen chapters. I’m going over to the ‘original’ Virtuous Wife, to see if the MC is any different. Will be coming back to this afterwards! Maybe?

After reading this I just felt disappointed. This story and To Be A Virtuous Wife (which I haven’t read yet) had so much hype that I started reading it with very high expectations. I’ve read Job of an Imperial Concubine, written by the same author and that story has got to be one of my favorites, which really made me believe that I’d get something of the same caliber. Unfortunately, this story bored me so much I’d rather watch paint dry and I couldn’t bring myself to like the MC.... more>> A good MC carries the story, even if the plot is bad or if the ML and side characters are one dimensional, as long as you care for the MC and want to see their journey, you’d struggle through to finally read their happy ending. Lazy MC’s are great sometimes, especially if they have to struggle against the world to maintain their laziness but the MC is so dry and blasé about almost everything that it appears as though she were apathetic to everyone around her. I think September Flowing Fire’s works focusing on Ancient China and fights for the Imperial throne are more worthwhile to read that 8TT. <<less

easily my favourite historical josei of all times. If you’re hesitating to read this, well worry not cause this is the sign for you to start reading.

MC (Hua Xi Wan) is one of my fav female leads (alongside with Qu Qingju from To Be A Virtuous Wife and Mu Xiaoya from My Husband with Scholar Syndrome) yes she is lazy but only at appropriate times. She’s the type of “if I can just say three words why say four?” kinda person or more like “if I could just smile and... more>> nod why speak?” and I think it’s very cool and admirable lol I wish I could live leisurely like that zzz. While she is lazy, she doesn’t abandon her responsibilities and she is also smart, calm and quick at making decisions.
Spoiler

my favorite scenes are probably when MC and ML act in front of others especially the crying scenes lolol

[collapse]

ML (Yan Jin Qiu) is literally the embodiment of black belly gentleman. I feel like ML and MC are quite similar in many ways. Both are good at acting, scheming and calculating. Both are quick witted and have the “filial” persona. However compared to MC, he seems a bit dull. But together, they fit each other so much and they understand each other without having to say a lot- simply harmonious.

it’s not that I like this novel just because of the main characters but also because of the side characters. For a story set revolving around the palace, there is never a shortage of vicious and cruel characters. And what I like the most is how author made all of them came to life, even the cannon fodders.

for example, the Crown Princess. I feel really bad for her
Spoiler

especially because she married that kind of slag crown prince and not enough with that.. Her father-in-law (the emperor) is just the same slag man who imp**gnated his own daughter-in-law. She was even raised as a crown princess, instead of being able to experience a normal childhood. Sigh, even after becoming the crown princess her misery just never ends. Plus the evil mother-in-law

[collapse]

and ML’s brother (Sheng Junwang) ’s wife.
Spoiler

same case as crown princess, married the wrong guy. Her husband doesn’t love or care about her and only cares about himself and his position in court. Even when she miscarried, he was apathetic

[collapse]

this novel is full of palace schemes and political issues. It centers around the fight for the throne between 3 major people (with the Emperor who is hostile towards two of them, minus one only because it’s his son) so you have to pay attention to every single details since for some reason ancient people really like to talk flowers and never straight to the point. Really a big headache, I could only be thankful I was born in the modern era.

10/5 for story. Love it~~~ i’m probably eight treasures trousseau solo stan <<less

? Not Bad...

The MC is super lazy, which gives this story a different feel. I would have liked to know more about what happened in her past life that made her so jaded. And how the heck did she transmigrate... did I miss that while reading??

... more>> The plot was slow paced but interesting enough. However, I always felt like the MC was only watching a play the whole story and everything major happening was going on in the background as she waited to reap the benefits. ?

But the biggest problem I had was the descriptions... I was tired of hearing how beautiful she was and how perfect they looked together. And that's basically all this story was about. ?

So yeah, I didn't love this story, but definitely didn't hate it. ? <<less

Reading till chapter 8 now. And I still dot know what or where is the theme of this novel? Since, the fresh flower aand manure thing is already solved within several early chapters, it's not really the best idea for intriguing arrow in a novel unless she wears iron mask till the middle of the story.

We only know she's a rebirth or transmigrate there yet nothing so far.

And if ML loves FL just because of her face and really falls deep by the time their first morning comes........ tell me,... more>> where's the interest in this novel.

Dull. That's all I can say about this novel. I'm all for slice of life novels with no action, as long as the story itself is interesting. However the MC in this story feels like a side character. Most of the events don't even involve her, and she just hears about them later. Her laziness was at first endearing, but eventually became boring. There's just nothing in the story to replace the mc's usual ambition, whether it be revenge, conquering, or production. She just lazes about,... more>> semi flirting yet guarding against her husband. I'll probably go back to this novel and finish it eventually. When I do, if it becomes better I'll change my score accordingly. <<less

One of best novel. I like this novel more than TBVW because MC is smart, caring, strong and fiercer unlike TBVW MC, she is caring toward her cousin and isn't b*tches MC from TBVW.

I don't like TBVW because MC is b*tch, seduced and ML is only care MC because he find her interesting and beautiful different from former girl. He is playful and immature guy who think interesting thing is more important than wife. I like ETT MC and ML they are perfect couple and care each other because they... more>> are husband and wife. <<less

Translation: 5+/5

Plot:4.5/5

Characters: 4.5/5

... more>> Laziness: Peak

Basic plot, MC is transmigrator into ancient times, gets decreed into marriage with ML, they feel each other out, plot happens, happy end. Plot is pretty straight forward, MC is talented, super beautiful, and skilled, she takes down obstacles when they purposefully comes her way and is too lazy to bother scheming. ML is handsome, highly positioned, cultured, etc., but secretly ambitious and coldhearted, but eventually warms up to MC since they're fated. The two start off married, but their relationship develops over the course of the story in a subtle and believable way. It's strange, there's lots of tropes, but you still end up cheering for them. Some of the major plot movements happen in the background or is glossed over, especially near the end, but I liked that things weren't dragged out. The translation is amazing and contributed greatly to my enjoyment of the story. Recommended read all around. <<less

Does this author write anything other than awesome stories?

I cl**ked on chapter one after another poster noted the ML’s torture chamber. I was not disappointed.

So, so many solid, strong women. I pour one out for Hou-shi and the Crown Princess, whose lives were a damn shame.

Secondary characters were fire. The Hua Xi Wan Acting Troop was a stroke of genius. Note to self: I need to find someone who ... more>>

I very very highly recommend this.

I’m holding out for a sequel featuring the life and times of Mu Tong, the greatest right hand man ever.

I also salute the commenters on the translators website. There was some subtle wordplay that I think was missed translating from Chinese to English (always a shame). Translation was solid throughout.

It's quite hard to read this because about 30% of the text (at least at the start) is describing how beautiful the main characters are.

If you hate harem, this is for you.

If you hate s*upid FL, this is for you.

This is a beautiful Romance story with the right mix of scheming and politics.

... more>> The protagonists are somewhat passive on the surface but do a lot of shady things. There are scenes where they have to face other characters and prove that they are not easily intimidated but it was always done swiftly and not cringey. Like for example, the FL doesn't have to dance and sing in front of everyone to prove herself.

I also think the translation was good enough. <<less

I had big expectations about this. It's not that I was disappointed or have negative feelings—it's more like it went 'okay'.

I thought this was going to be fluffy, full of passionate love, possessive kind of ML and schemes all over the place but as it turned out, it was simple.

There's nothing wrong about it's simplicity but for people whos looking for fluff and with those complicated stuff then this is not it. It has schemes about succession but not handled greatly in my opinion.

I also do not have strong feelings... more>> about the MC and ML. MC is lazy and not meddlesome with matters she knew she should not meddle, and I like that part of her. ML is also faithful although I kind of hoped there was more challenge in their relationship to emphasize growth but oh well it's still fine.

What I am disatisfied with is the ending. I don't really care with Rui He and I bet not many people do so why write the ending in her angle? I would understand if it's just a side story. I want to read at least more details narrating the couples life in the palace and how their family slowly grow. There's also no side stories available. Sigh. <<less

This story has the atmosphere of the slice-of-life genre even if it isn't tagged as such.

The political schemes are subtle and the romance is simple.

Good read if you want a simple romance in the historical setting to pass the time.

I personally didn't enjoy this novel, but I can 100% see how so many people love it.

Audience this is for

This novel was definitely not made for a casual reader like me (I read webnovels to mainly relax) because the author uses a ton of double-speak, or words that could be interpreted so many different ways from different perspectives. As I said earlier, I read for fun and don't like to spend mental energy trying to think about the novel but enjoy it instead, so the way that this novel was... more>> written made me feel like I was missing something. The author doesn't really explain much either, so it was hard to know exactly what was going on. If not for translator notes and comments by readers, I would not have understood what was going on. Idk, maybe I'm just dumb.

Tldr: This novel is super well written and translated so if you aren't lazy and dense like me love an intriguing plot with so much foreshadowing and hidden meanings, this novel is for you!

Plot and characters

I love reading about lazy characters and Hua Xi Wan is wonderful. She is smart, and knows when to stop caring. The transmigration part of her doesn't affect the plot too much. YJQ is handsome, cunning, etc. Docile on the outside and sly on the inside. HXW doesn't shy away from it and their masks aren't removed for the entire novel pretty much. Plot is great and there are so many nuances and play on words that may be hard to understand.

Tldr: Good plot, solid characters.

Complaints/Final thoughts

Personally, there wasn't too much going on directly happening to the characters, and if the ML did something, the reader would only be told something vague and this novel was just a bunch of: this happened to minor character or so and so died, and the main leads kept their mask on of being kind and uncaring basically the entire time. Basically, we don't see them actually doing things (FL just lazy, ML wants to keep his mask on), just them reacting to rumors spreading. There was no "hype" and "build-up" of seeing the main characters plot something and hoping that it works out. I just didn't have that strong connection to root for the character even though I wanted to so bad. If they did plot something, we would just skip over it happening and cut to the result and the effects of it. I thought it was sooo boring, but you can have a totally different take on it.

Additionally, this is my 2nd time reading it (I forgot that I had read it before/partially read it) but turns out I finished it before and completely forgot. That's how memorable it was. <<less

Can't say this is a romance novel, can't say this is a palace intrigue or family scheme warfare either, each sentence might have a deeper meaning or it might have not, leaves room for reader to think which is probably the only upside of this novel and that kept me going and finishing it.

Characters are rather realistic, they don't go full IQ-nerfed and cannon-fodder-mode facing main characters, some might be dumb but they'll get even schemed against other cannon fodders. To me, everything was written very passively, by the time... more>> some event occurred, it's mostly how it affected people afterwards. There rarely was a big event that happened in the moment. Mostly, this passive style has to be blamed on the lazy MC that really can't be bothered to go places and do things.
As to why I didn't feel this was a romance novel;
Spoiler

She deeply swore to herself with a clear and sober mind that she'll never give her heart to a man and from the beginning til end she stuck to that. She did mostly everything to protect herself and the family that raised and loved her with all their hearts. The only touching moment when she stood up for the male lead was when the sister came to bully the two.
Novel revealed along halfway through how ML felt about MC, but honestly, it made no sense to me, as it could very well be just infatuation due to her uniqueness and nothing else. It might be also due to her overwhelming beauty but meh, all I felt from this couple was pure respect and cooperation. There were a lot of sweet and pampering moments but all in all, far from actual romance. (Heck, if you didn't put names in, I could imagine him spoiling a pet instead of a human being, excluding the very very subtle rolling in the sheets hints. No srsly, the s*x was so subtle, I doubted for a long time that they even consummated their marriage on their wedding eve.)
Additionally, there were things ML had done at the risk of MC's reputation and before they revealed the private thoughts of ML, I could definitely imagine him tossing her to the wolves, figuratively speaking.

[collapse]
The story is overall enjoyable and a nice read but in case you are here for the romance, I'd rate it 1star. It just doesn't feel like it ever had a main genre.

About the schemes and plottings;
Spoiler

While the writing was overly passive so was the scheming of ML&MC, everybody falls hook line and sinker for their plots while they dodge matrix style from everybody else's. They played an observer role until the finishing move for a big table turn that, guess what, also was passively narrated. So all ML and MC had to do most of the time is to act the heck out of their white lotus roles and then strike in the end, they didn't even round up a couple most annoying roles like the Zhang aunt and ML's female cousin.

Even though I have not read too far, like others have said, this novel is very boring and is mostly everyone talking about how pretty the MC is. I somewhat like her character (lazy, practices martial arts a little, not really interested in society, likes to read, slightly cold but not mean) but the story is so boring I don't want to keep reading it.

This novel was truly wonderful, and forever will be one of my favourites. From the scheming to the underlying messages, this novel has been one hell of a ride. The FL has such character strength and a broad mindset that you'd be pulled into fawning over her like the ML. As a modern woman, deep down in her bones, she knows that she has the strength and free will to retaliate - to express her opinion. I believe that is the true selling point of this novel, and one that... more>> makes it timeless. This is one of the things that are absent from many other novels although they try to highlight it and fail miserably.

To be honest, when I first started reading this novel, I wasn't highly invested in it and found it quite boring. However, if you keep reading and watch how the plot thickens as well as the growth between characters, you'd be able to truly enjoy the novel. The cast of characters is on a small scale but does not take away from the story at all. If anything, it allowed the author to more exquisitely explore their individual motivations and personalities. Though the FL is quite OP in another sense, she is a human with many flaws - this is highlighted though subtly through the text.

From beginning to end, this novel has been amazing. The ML and FL are so cute together, and I truly respect stories where monogamy is in place. Stories with harems in them are quite lackluster, to me at least.

An outstanding 5/5 from me <3 <<less

Just finished binge-reading this, I found it really interesting and satisfying.

If you read and liked To Be a Virtuous Wife, then you will probably like this, too.

When I first started TBaVW, I found that story was really interesting, but it strained my brain a lot. Primarily, all of the Chinese terms/honourifics/titles, but also the detail and dense meaning of the writing. I paused that one and went and read looooots of other, more light-hearted Chinese novels of various genres, before picking up Eight treasures Trousseau. This time, I found the... more>> same type of writing much easier to read.

While this is a modern woman reincarnated into an ancient-China-type-era story, it is not the lightweight and easily-digestible writing you might find in ones such as Black Bellied Miss, Transmigrator vs Reincarnator or Doomed to be Canon Fodder. The writing here is more like reading Jane Austen - the details of etiquette and small talk might seem trivial, but, in fact, they are full of meaning and this is where the plot is actually developing. As I said, this became easier for me to understand after becoming a little more familiar with ancient Chinese culture, and so it became interesting and intriguing.

I liked the MC because she has strength and intelligence but she does not use it much and the story does not rely on this too much (well, perhaps the rarely-displayed-but-impressive physical ability is a bit too Mary Sue) ; Unlike similar novels, she's not actively scheming or brilliantly face-slapping all the time (although she's capable enough), instead there's an overarching plot unfolding of political intrigue and machinations as various factions vie for power.

I found the fact that the MC remembered her past life almost unimportant, as it is not overtly utilised as in some stories where the MC will use her special skills, knowledge or experience. However, it does mean she is viewing things through the dual perspective of someone born and raised in an old-fashioned era who has also lived independently in the modern era. This means that her values are more in line with the readers' values, which is more satisfying to read. I did find it uncomfortable to be supporting an MC and ML who are fine with the harsh way enemies and even out-of-line servants are abused, but at least the author had her grow up in the era since birth and therefore she had a realistic rather than idealistic attitude to a lot of the things that should outrage someone who had only just transmigrated. The MC is also not without some genuine compassion and kindness, although she is not a bleeding heart.

As well as the intricate writing, I also really enjoyed the balanced and realistic way most of the characters were treated. There were actually nice characters. Especially, many of those who behaved antagonistically were not completely without good qualities, and we even saw how some purer characters were gradually corroded by the toxic environment of plotting and manipulating.

Also, the translation was, while not flawless, of a high quality that really made reading enjoyable.

In the end, my ratings are always primarily for how readable & enjoyable a story is. This is not quite the mindless, easy read of some others of this genre, but I still found it smooth, interesting and engaging. I wanted to keep reading (and I did, on and on).

(I almost never give five stars; it would have needed to to have just a tiny bit less literature-like heaviness - it's not very heavy, though - and probably have MCs that never did anything that jarred with my modern-day principles at all. Small things, though.) <<less

The entire novel is rather subversive. Underneath the surface romance/plot, it felt like the author was thumbing her nose at all those stereotypical historical plots and MCs/MLs.
Spoiler

The author writes the ML literally as a complete psycho while the MC is too lazy to even feed herself. Instead of trying to change circumstances/rebirth, the MC just goes along with everything and tries to live as comfortably as possible. The ML is helplessly trying to get her to care about his ambitions. It's hilarious.

[collapse]

This is a subtle and slow story. There aren't a lot of direct actions and might appear boring to some people. It's definitely not an instant-gratification or "love-at-first-sight blinding obsession" type plot/romance, which I personally thought was one of its strong points and greatly differentiated it from other novels in this genre.

All the characters (except some of the cannon fodder servants) are well-written and have way more complexity than your typical scheming cast. No one is "clean" or pure, which makes sense in this time period, especially relating to the imperial family and struggles for the throne.

It's nice to see complex and sympathetic female villains for once. And it's not just the females who are scheming (thank god).

I did have to read the comments frequently in order to understand many of the subtleties in the interactions between the characters, which wasn't a bad thing in my opinion. Schemes were pretty deep! The subtleties and foreshadowing definitely make this book re-readable.

Other things I enjoyed:

    • the MC is the one who is "valiant" and able to physically protect herself. ML has the reputation as the scholar type. Really rare to have that kind of role reversal!
      Spoiler

Even though it's hinted that he knows martial arts, he never actually uses it in the story.

      [collapse]
    • the MC's feelings for the ML were realistic for the time period, as the power imbalance between men and women were so skewed. MC treated ML well because he treated her well, but she was careful not to fall into the common pitfalls of the poor women of the time.
      Spoiler

That made the ending super sweet when she decided to "gamble" on the MC and let herself fall in love because he had shown her his sincerity so well.

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

I'm usually not a fan of HEAs where the MC/ML become emperor/empress because it's just so unrealistic. I know fictional stories are idealized and meant for entertainment, so this is just my personal tastes. Emperor/empress in ancient china + happiness/truelove are such polar opposites, it ruins the fantasy for me (haha). However, this book is the exception. It's pretty clearly represented that the imperial family doesn't bring happiness, so it's surprisingly subversive.
