As expected of Gu Man's novels. It's very good. Its still ongoing so I can't say much but I like how the story is progressing right now. FL is the strong-headed but cute type. She is beautiful but does not have many talents so she supplements it with hard work. Meanwhile, ML is not the typical domineering I-want-to-conquer-the-world CEO. He is one who chooses dreams over money and power but later, social pressure comes biting him.

Spoiler

Female lead has a crush on male lead during highschool but he rejected her. His reason was like: "I want someone who can strive together with me." Like accompany him to accomplish his grand dream.

ML is an awesome top student at that time. FL is not good at studying. ML got together with a top student during college.

Ironically, his gf broke up with him because he does not want to give up his dreams-- something related to aerospace, and gf does not support it.

Years later, FL became a famous actress while ML is thinking of giving up his job at aerospace. The job is awesome. They do amazing things like launching rockets but it is not for a realist. It has very low pay and he literally has no vacations. FL and ML meet again as he became her gaming coach.

ML feels weird because FL is the only one who thinks giving up his dream and resigning from the aerospace institution is a waste. All the others, including his ex-gf were goading him to accept high-paying jobs, which were more realistic. They were like: "You are the most outstanding in school but you waste your IQ in a difficult and low-paying job.

I like the lesson the novel gives to ML: The one who can accompany you to your journey might not be the one who is as outstanding as you, but the one who supports and believes in you.

Oh... The FL is similar to the ML in one aspect. FL also broke up with ex-bf because he wants her to retire being an actress. I quite like the second ML actually.

This novel is a combination of comedy, gaming, angst, and fluffyness. When MC met the ML again I dont think she was still in love with him: it has been like 10 years or something since they met. Her reaction towards him was more on reminiscing her old feelings towards him and actually using that knowledge to entrap him since she does need him for something lol.

Im very fond of the MC for the following reasons:

  • Not OP: everything she currently has because she is very smart and hardworking. Her smartness leans more on the streetsmart since she survived showbiz and is in the very top
  • Mature: she takes her job seriously and diligently
  • Knows what she wants and actually goes for it: she knows she needs ML to teach her so she slyly went for it (and succeeded!) and actually made the first move in confessing her feelings (TWICE!)
  • No angstly oh I like u but cant tell u cuz im shy boohoo: as I said, this girl takes the first move. And I find her feelings actually more pure than the other MC out there since she actually takes the time to learn about what the person she likes to better understand them. Its a bit pitiful tbh but also wholesome in the same time
And the lovely ML. This ML is... more>> not overbearing and sht. His feelings for her is actually realistic. He never liked her back then and when they saw each again it was more on the acquaintance side. And when he did realize his feelings he wasnt possessive or any of that shit. All he thought about was her well being and future.

I think the best thing about the ML is his growth as a person. He had a lot of internal problem and without giving away too much details: he is stuck between continuing his passion or letting it go to have a stable income since he is pressured by society to take a much more stable income.

There isnt a lot of angst in this fic since it is quite short but does well in balancing their life with the gaming aspects. Everything just felt right with these two. Nothing felt forced or anything like that. A great read if you are looking for something short and fun. <<less

This must be Gu Man's most mature work to date.

Perhaps it was my own turbulent emotions, but I actually spent the majority of this book shedding many many tears while enjoying the bittersweet feelings during the ups and downs of Jing Jing and Yu Tu's story.

(It's actually not that sad! But I was very affected!!) (˃̣̣̥ω˂̣̣̥)

Behind the fluff and sweetness of a beautiful star hard at work, the story touches on our modern society's prejudices, gender roles, and obsession with economic success as an indication of... more>> self-worth. I was really touched by the characters and found their struggle for acceptance, confidence, and self-respect resonant.

Since I'm still currently in the honeymoon phase with this book, I would unreservedly recommend this, 10/10. There is also the rare childhood friend/high school reunion trope (!) and economic role reversal (!!) in this story that is rarely seen among other novels here at NU. Really lovely.

Many thanks to the translator for doing an amazing job with it!

Spoiler

If this one gets made into a drama too, and it stays true to the book, it would be a m a z I n g!!

Gu Man never dissapoints. Although this story is only halfway, I can feel it quickly becoming one of my favourite c-novels. Everything about the book is beautifully written and in such a great style. Please, give this novel a chance and don't miss out. (An excerpt included below in my review to get you interested!)

The FL is charming and endearing. She reminds me of a puppy, super cute and scheming (in an entirely good way of course) when they want something. She isn't naive or air-headed, something I greatly... more>> appreciate, or a cold-faced beauty. She's warm, vibrant and hilarious.

The ML isn't your typical cookie cutter handsome man who is either facially paralysed or a big flirt. He reminds me of Xiao Nai except a bit more realistic and flawed.
Spoiler

His main flaw comes from the frustration he has after pursuing his life long dream in aerospace but eventually coming to the crossroad of abandoning of his dreams for financial stability.

[collapse]
I love this flaw because it's something that just resonates with me as an individual. ML is also extremely caring and witty

Spoiler

My favourite moment comes from when the ML goes to the FL's house after she asks him to help fix her air purifier via her gaming ID and he meets her for the first time in years.

"...." Suddenly Zhai Liang remembered an important question. "By the way, is Cotton pretty?"

This time, Yu Tu contemplated for a while, then answered him: "She can be seen everywhere on the street."

Zhai Liang was a little disappointed, but he still righteously criticized Yu Tu: "Isn't your mouth a bit mean? How can you say that of a girl?"

Yu Tu: "I spoke the truth."

Much later, when Zhai Liang finally saw the true face of "Cotton"..... he was so impressed he wanted to kill Yu Tu... This face... could indeed be seen on the street everywhere, couldn't it?

[collapse]

Translation quality is also extremely well done. The translator puts extensive notes (and pictures!) about the game mentioned in order for you to comprehend what's going on, even if you have no prior knowledge with MOBA sort of games.

Tldr; Great romance with wonderful character build-up and pacing. Only flaw is that the translation isn't complete :P

Do I recommend it? Well, since I stayed up to read this even though I have a test the next day, I cannot stress how much this novel should be read. YES! Please don't decide to not read this because it seems 'uninteresting' because I can tell you now, it's definitely not. <<less

I can't believe it, how does this gem hide from me all these years ?!?
It was so so good, the most realistic love story in any novel I ever read
I can't wait for the adaption to drama to come out!!

I feel like the main character in this novel is Yu Tu, the story are more to Yu Tu problems and how he struggle, with Jing Jing as his savior.
With Jing Jing too, he came to know what is love. There's a character development, both couple change for... more>> better than their teenager self.

When their first kiss happen, it really came out of nowhere, like, boom! It happen, made me squeal so much and run laps around my house to calm down myself, haha

I'm the kind of person who hate angst, the angst really minimal and not too long, they were sweet and fluffy before the angst happen, after the angst happen, they become fluffier and sweeter, almost made me choke on dog food. The fluffy part are not cringy, it's very mature, slice of life kinda fluffy.

But if it's me, between dreams and money, I will choose money, maybe I just don't have any dream like Yu Tu, he's so passionate about his dream, when his dream come true, he look so dazzling, makes me feel kinda jealous of him at the same time, I'm truly happy for him, hehe

I really truly love this novel
Thank you translator for introducing this novel to me
Long live the author to make more novel like this! <<less

This is different from other romances. Here, the guy isn’t a super rich CEO, rather he is a science guy who is conflicted between following his low paying dream which he had followed for years and a high paying job in finance. The best part is FL being one of the handfuls who wanted him to pursue his passions rather than something that literally everyone was doing. She fell for him because he loved space and stars and she is going to bask in his glory once he reaches them.
It’s beautifully written tale and well translated. A must read.

I love this novel more than the other novel of the same author. Both novels are great but you can feel this novel is realistic and well written about the characters. You can feel the pain, happiness along with the main leads. I really love the main leads personalities and their love story. Actually their love story doesn't felt forced, which I really liked that in this novel. We can understand the thought process of both characters mainly ML and it is very well written.
FL is not s*upid nor... more>> dumb in fact she is clever (not as much as ML in terms of studies), more down to earth and she knows her values and mischievous and quick witted, she is probably my favourite female character. ML is smart and intellectual but not rude (maybe little when he was young), he has his own principles and values, very hardworking towards his goal, not rich, he has his up and downs, he is not perfect guy but a mature guy, he has some flaws but he reacts more like human and quick witted.
Spoiler

He may have rejected FL in his school days because he didn't even know her (I mean he knows that she is his classmate but I'm talking about her as a person), just think if someone who you don't know suddenly confessed what you will do? He didn't rejected her ruthlessly but he respectfully declined her.

[collapse]
and I admit he is idealistic about his opinion on his type but he learned from his mistakes and I absolutely respect that. Overall he is a good person. Both FL and ML are perfect match, feels like soulmates.

I highly recommend it to those who love gaming, who are passion about their dreams, who love astronomy and space science and acting, fluffy (considerably) and realistic love story. The novel is mainly about their life along with the gaming. There is no misunderstanding but hardly have 2 fights (these fights are before getting in relationship) and no breakup and they have a healthy relationship. Epilogues are soo cute.

By reading this novel, one can understand how hard it is to fulfil our dreams, there will be so many obstacles in the path of our dreams but one who are clear minded about their path and strong enough can achieve the success. There is a saying "Never give up desire to be what you want to be. Stay focused, persistent and relentless" so keep fighting.

I don't know why this novel hasn't given much attention, its clearly a gem. <<less

Alt title: How to bait your first love

If you're looking for a light romance with minimal angst & no dog-blood plot, you have come to the right place. The premise is pretty simple: FL is a celebrity who happens to be the ambassador for the game, King's Glory. Too bad she sucks, but this fact is usually kept under wraps, that is, until a video of her crummy gameplay leaks out. Now she's agreed to play a live tournament alongside professionals & has only a month to seriously level... more>> up her gaming skills. Determined, she makes an alternate noob account to practice & encounters her first love, who of course is an expert at the game. Light bulb! She asks him to coach her ;)

AHH- it's a bit cliched, but I think it's fun & adorable. I was very pleased to see how spunky & bold FL was. Despite the fact that she was once rejected by ML, there's no bit of hesitation- she goes for it & I appreciate that straightforwardness. She's earnest, kind, & a bit of an idealist, which is a rather nice match to ML's more standard way of thought. I'm a bit sad to see it be so short, but the epilogues were cute. No bun tho... SIGH

Also, this is being adapted into a drama & it stars Yang Yang & Dilireba! I CANNOT WAIT ;A; <<less

This is still my go-to novel to immerse myself in gaming + romance.

I highly recommend that you read this, just take enough patience to go through the gaming info if you're new to that. Maybe even watch a few e-online games on YouTube so you could understand what's being introduced here. Aside from that, enjoy the raw emotional ride between the male and female lead.

Other reasons why I would recommend it:

... more>> 5/5 well-written and well-plotted story by Gu Man

5/5 translation/editing: Peanuts and Hoju are a great duo! I enjoy all their notes and comments, as well as anything that could clarify any points in the novel

5/5 plot (you'll have to read the whole thing to fully understand)

5/5 Male and Female Leads (either they drag you to empathize to their cause/goal or turn you into their 'reader'-friend who are witnessing their love story grow--you might even feel compelled to make speech at their wedding!) <<less

I really like that the male lead had a relatable problem. At least, he's more human than most MLs in most eastern novels that I've read. He's vulnerable, and he's insecure, I like that.

Some reviews said he should choose money, but for me, I envy people with dreams. Money is not easy to earn but dreams are harder to achieve and even harder to have. I would love to have a dream, but alas, most people strive in mediocrity.

Also, the female lead is endearing, I totally totally get why ML... more>> would fall in love with her, heck, I would fall for that her too.

Overall, this is such a relatable novel. <<less

It's been a while since I read this, but I still vagualy remmeber my opinions on this.
The ML initially looked down on MC when she had less prospects than him, and then proceeded to look down on himself when their roles were reversed.
It was an understandable mistake from his youth, because he didn't feel love, thus didn't care about it. But the second time, it seems that even after falling in love, he didn't learn his lesson. Love has nothing to do with status and money. Moreover, as... more>> MC said, when you love you're impulsive and don't think much about it. But to be fair, he was probably impacted by seeing what his colleagues and their family members and his own family had to go through and he didn't want MC to suffer through the same by being with him. He still gave up without even trying though.
I do appreciate tho that he was initially a very logical and rational person, but he later changed and went with his heart in both his work and love choices.

Lastly, to be honest, between my dream plus hard work VS easy money, I would choose easy money. ML enjoys the work he does, but he's both very busy because of it, very tired and gets little money and no time to spend with his loved ones. While his second option is also something he's still very good at, much easier for him and would earn a lot of money. I would go for the second option if I were him, he's sacrificing too much time, effort and money for his dream. Maybe I can't understand what it's like to have a dream you're so passionate about, but to work that hard for it, and be so underpaid, it's not worth it, and spending more time with my close ones is more important for me. It's his choice tho, just saying what I'd do in his shoes. <<less

Skipped a lot of the gaming technicalities.. Real fluff at the end plus the epilogues. Love the MC and ML is the nerdy hot guy but didn't feel too off and feels more human.

Overall, a really good story. Lots of quotes I saved from this one because they pierced right into the heart. ^^ Don't give up and continue reading, it's worth it!

This is so good. Full of melancholy feels. I was interested in this story when I heard that the drama I was watching, based on a web novel. I was kind of emotionally vested in the drama because the plot was that good. So, I wasn't that surprised when I heard it was an adaptation. This story is so realistic that I was wondering whether there are people like that. Been watching the tv drama adaptation before finding out about this great novel. What can I say? Both works are superb. The original novel version was so great. I love this novel, probably my favorite from Gu Man's works (so far). The plot was actually quite simple but it's so sweet and heartwarming. Both FL and ML were likeable. Well, to be fair, I disliked ML a bit at the beginning because what he did to FL in his youth but ML's dedication to change to be a better person for FL later was worth praising (really unlike that He Yichen from Heyi Shengxiao Mo). FL also had her own merit. She was adorable, slightly innocent (but sometimes... more>> could be mischievous too), and witty. In term of IQ, she maybe couldn't compare to ML but for EQ, she was better than him; so I think they really complemented each other.

Actually, I watched the drama first before reading the novel version. There's no difference between novel and drama version, only the drama version was a bit more detailed compared to novel version. Yang Yang and Dilraba could really portrayed Yu Tu and Qiao Jing Jing perfectly. Their chemistry was also great.

I really couldn't have enough of this story. I wish I could read about their child but I know it's wise for ML and FL to delay having kids till the end since they were both quite busy. At least on the drama, it was implied that FL and ML planned to have a baby after they were both less busy. <<less

I like this story more than A Slight Smile is Very Charming (another author's work) because I feel that the characterization is more grounded here, especially the ML.

ML is an ace of all trades who has options for career path. However, exactly due to this reason, he is uncertain of which path he has to choose. There is difficult trade-off between money and dream, and while he spends his time hesitating, his age isn't getting any younger. This uncertainty makes him feels inferior to MC. Not in jealous way, but... more>> more like he isn't confident enough to stand by her side.

Meanwhile, MC is bright and charming. She used to be looked down upon by highschoolmates, especially by ML's ex-girlfriend, but she turns out to be the most successful among her peers. In spite of this, she is actually still humble and dedicated to her job. She takes innitiatives in regards to her relationship with ML and never belittles his current (financial) condition. She is also very supportive of him too.

As RPG player, this story's type of game is unfamiliar to me. Despite that, I still can enjoy the gaming aspect.

I also like how author subtly connect MC and ML's professions with their love life.

Spoiler

MC is a celebrity. Another word for celebrity is star.

ML is an aerospace engineer. His ultimate goal is all about reaching for the stars.

Similarly in their love life, her feeling for him is established early on. After that it's his journey to close the gap between them, to reach for her.

Just like the actual star, she is set as his goal.

Hence, she is his glory.

[collapse]

This is the very example where subtleties done with justice. It enhances the beauty of the story.

In conclusion, this is a pleasant read. Totally recommended. <<less

Worth the read! Two excited thumbs up.

Initially, I was a bit disinterested in reading this cause I was put off by the gaming tag. I'm not a big gamer nor do I have any specific interest in games so even though it was in my reading list, I'd been ignoring it for a while. But I had some extra time on my hand and I wanted to read something that wasn't to long and was already completed so I gave it a go. Best decision ever. It's a very sweet... more>> story filled with enough fluff to keep you reading. The main characters aren't over the top. Their character concepts are relatively simple and believable. They don't get into any situations outside of logic and their character building is smooth. The conflicts that the characters struggle with are relatable to the average person.

Spoiler

The male lead struggles with the concept of not living up to expectations, earning as much as others and being able to provide for his family. While he likes the MC, he ends up rejecting the idea of them being together as he feels like he's not good enough for her and won't be able to give her the celebrity lifestyle that she's accustomed to. It's akin to him being insecure about his role as a man.

[collapse]

The MC is very likable, completely unlike the Mary Sue's or otherworldly genius. She's a hardworking, witty and has a natural charm to her. Most importantly, her personality is consistent with her character.

My favorite parts in this novel are the interactions between the MC and ML. They're dialogue is never seems forced or boring, the characters exhibit a natural chemistry with each other that sometimes left me blushing.

All in all, it's a great novel. <<less
