Kim Dokja does not consider himself the protagonist of his own life. Befitting the name his parents gave him, he is a solitary person whose sole hobby is reading web novels. For over a decade, he has lived vicariously through Yu Junghyeok, the main character of the web novel Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse (TWSA).

Through Junghyeok, Dokja has experienced secondhand the trials of repeatedly regressing in time, in search of an end to life-threatening “scenarios” that force people to act out narratives for the amus**ent of god-like “Constellations.”

After reading 3,149 chapters—long after all other readers lost interest—Dokja finally resigns himself to the story ending. However, he receives an enigmatic message from the author, stating that the story will soon be monetized, before his surroundings suddenly go dark.

He swiftly realizes that fiction has become reality and he is now living through TWSA. Although he is the singular omniscient reader of the events yet to come, his success in the scenarios is not guaranteed—but perhaps his advantage will empower him to step into the protagonist role that never suited him before.

this is made me question whether this story was actually Shounen AI... I mean, there is too much bromace here.

Well, for now the stories was well written but nothing ground breaking nor special about it, it just well executed. The phase, the story plot (don't get mistaken with the MC plot armor tho), the interaction was well balanced, though it's a bit remind me of The Reincarnator which is similar type of story except from side-character POV.

I might recommend it if you're looking something that not too heavy but not... more>> too light either, a well balanced dish. I rate it 4 stars because it's average and I'm a bit biased to rainbow turtle, hehe <<less

This is good. I don't have much to say. But if you like story that builds on character and finds reason on the actions of people, then read this. Not every character they meet is "overbearing" like in chinese novel. Sadly it's only on chapter 27 for now so it'll take a while before anything repetitive shows. But at least it isn't like most chinese novel which is a set pattern of

  1. Found enemy
  2. Fight enemy
2a. Too strong - retreat and power up
2b. Too weak - blows them away and slaughter you path through.
  3. Go to next location
  4. Repeat.
Can't say every Korean novel isn't like this too. But if there isn't a realistic objective, then it just feels repetitive.

This was an absolute masterpiece on a thematic level. Of course, plot and characters were great as well but what I loved the most was the theme. As an avid reader of fiction, I loved how the writers developed the whole story around the theme of readership and how readers' interpretations of stories mold those very stories. I just can't squeal about this series enough. Highly recommended. I am still waiting for an official English publication. I want this in hardbound.

Repetitive. Previous world building falls apart as new concepts are introduced. Conflicts are solved using plot armour.

Was okay until roughly chapter 350, then slowly went down the drain.

Huge letdown.

I read this story without any expectations and it was amazing. It was my first novel and it started one of the many I would read. I love the MC and how he loves reading, I also love the way the other characters are willing to sacrifice the world for him, literally. The MC kills people without hesitation and he also kills himself multiple times. Although it's a little depressing, it's still amazing.

This is not for the light of heart. This novel is freaking long. Took me 2 months to finished it. But I am not impressed with the ending. First half of the book is great! Page turner and every page keeps you wanting more. The world building and storytelling is epic. A unique storyline that keeps me wanting more. Although the plots are cliche, it is still good.

Until the part before the ending where it confuses me. I no longer know what is happening. Seems like the author throw some... more>> shits and dazzling to make it more sense, but it's just a fancy plot to make it sure it is still interesting.

What strikes me the most is that the main role of MC is to

sacrifice himself every single time

This is my two cents tho <<less

One of the best novels I have read.
At first I wasn't expecting much, I'm the type that immediately drops a story if the start or summary didn't interest me, but this one really has me hooked. Just the way the story goes and how every chapter you're swarming with curiosity is so good. One of things I liked the most are the characters, how much they develop throughout the story. The author did really well on writing this story. I love the characters, even the villains. They were so... more>> good. I don't exactly have too much words but I enjoyed reading this a lot :) 11/10 <<less

A novel that make me value my role as a reader :)

Other reviews already describe how good ORV is. This is a story about 'story' itself. Sooo meta and have tons of foreshadowing that I only realized after rereading it. Honestly, ORV hits hard when u rereading it 😭

ORV always has a special place in my heart, it's a love letter to us (readers)

It all makes sense in the end. It's great. One of the only few novels to have actually made me like shake and quiver when reading the novel out of excitement. Some of the fights are underwhelming however, but it's great.

A grand, sweeping story best read when it's completed.

The most important thing to remember is that "Dokja" can mean both "individual/alone" and "reader".

Always keep that in mind so that you don't get lost in the story and the multiple layers of meta and tragic events in it.

By the standards of a webnovel this is an excellent read. It has great characters and character development, a powerful plot that ties itself together within its own set of established rules and takes advantage of the meta-ness in unexpected ways later on.

The largest reason I didn’t give it 5* is that the flow of the latter portion of the novel is extremely repetitive. It would likely be different if I read it as it came out, but binge-reading this novel made the last 100~150 chapters just feel awkward. There’s... more>> several fights that felt like they would qualify as a final fight, complete with tropes like revisiting and reminiscing over their journey from start to finish. At some point it just started feeling unnecessary and lost a lot of impact with the epilogue especially going over the same points and themes multiple times.

I can basically recommend this novel to anyone familiar with webnovels and specifically the tropes this novel utilizes. <<less

I have read this novel more than twice— and I want to say it didn't disappoint me. I don't know what's with others but this was a very fun read to me. Although, maybe it's because I find it fun when people suffer. It's a light read, 10/10. From my experience, this won't affect you much. Finished reading this book in 5 days everytime I read. :)

I read this a while back but it is still one of my most favourite stories ever. It is a little slow in the beginning, but it is a world with rich well written characters, dialogue and worldbuilding.

There are no other novels that I know that are like it.

It is a bit better paced than the manwha and is more impactful in my opinion.

This is literally the best webnovel ever written. Anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

As much as I like things like female protagonists, cute sidekick animals, villain protaginists, romance, and all those tropes that this novel doesn't have, I still can't find anything that measures up to ORV—even if not in writing, definitely in the plot. (I'm saying this hypothetically, because the writing is actually so f*cking good, but it's true that the translation lost a few nuances; for example, "my heart" should actually be translated to something like "it's... more>> my prerogative".)

I don't even know what else to say but that it's too f*cking good. I read this years back and still remember it, but it's still just as good rereading it each time. No one could ever regret reading this novel. <<less

I dont think I even need to tell people to read it since everything I wanted to say is written in other reviews.

This is one of the best novels ever published, no wonder it's so popular.

The amount of chapters may scare you but once you read it you realize that it is even kinda short.

Anyway read it if you still haven't.

Its been a while since I dropped this novel at chapter 535.

Today I suddenly feel the urge of writing a review for this novel.

For new readers who don't want to read my long ass review on how I feel about this, I can simplify it to:

... more>> "Just go f*cking read it if you're a true reader"

I found the manhwa for this one around an year ago when I was looking for some Solo leveling kind of sh*t and I loved the artstyle. So I thought "might as well give the novel a try". And so I did...

Now, it hurts. It hurts when I see those epilogue edits. I never read to the end because I didn't want to face what the author had in store for me. I had seen all the fanarts and fanatics (like me) low key going insane after reading the ending, I could already guess how it would end after being only 10 chaps away from the ending.

The ending is painful and is no normal one that you would find in any novel.

Spoiler

GOD it was a surprise when I read yoo joonghyuk's reason for regressing

[collapse]

The fact that the you won't be seeing all the characters again after 551 made me stop right there because there are no side stories either and I don't see the author writing another chapter and giving the novel a seal...

This is definitely a novel that's different from what you find on this sight. By different I dont mean its got a completely unique and stuff. Thats a big no.

The execution, the pacing, the characters, the language, the humour. Thats whats different from your usual murim or I level up by clearing dungeons bullsh*t where characters do not have defined personalities and well you know about the execution part.

I bet after a few years after finishing the novel ya'll gonna Be like me, looking back and thinking:

"Damn now that was a great journey"

Wow. This looong journey is finally over. I don’t even know how to review this. This was one hell of an emotional roller coaster.

Even though the MC had the usual tropes of transmigration (OP, foreknowledge, etc) the scenarios were still nail biting, especially with the MC being such a freaking sunfish- even though he cusses out the protagonist for being one of them, sigh.

The last set of chapters wrung me out. When I thought it came to an end, but that were still a surprising number of chapters left, I... more>> had the ‘oh-oh’ moment where I realized something was gonna go wrong.

The happenings after the end reminded me of that novel Predestination (highly recommend btw). Everything tied back to something in the past, like an ouroboros.

While I rec this book, I have to admit that it’s definitely not for everyone. The Story telling concepts as a form of power, constellations, stigmas... they are...a lot. But, once you push past the writing style -which can drag on a lot- it’s worth the read <<less

Punching the air crying I'm so happy.

I've finally found it. THE book to curb stomp all other books. Is this it? Is this the best book I'll ever read? What a strange feeling, knowing I might never read a book better than this one. But that's okay, if I could only ever read this book again that would be enough for me. 10, 751 pages is a lot, after all lmao

Out of all the stories that I've read, ORV is definitely one of the best. While I will say that the story does seem to drag on a bit more so as time goes on, and that the ending was very obviously rushed to hell, I find that the smaller things in the story are what get me to keep reading.

One of the aspects of the story that the author got right was the characters. Of course, there are some that seem quite one dimensional like gilyoung, who most of... more>> the time just seems like his purpose is to be attached to his hyung. But a lot of the other characters actually get some development or are actually interesting to the point where I really like them. That's mostly for the side characters though, Dokja does seem to be one dimensional also when you read it.

The story development (plot) was pretty wonky to be honest, but there is one thing I would like to praise it on and it's that at least it's connected and goes back on itself pretty nicely. I've seen too many stories where they just explain that the MC is some sort of omnipotent being or is supported by one because. Though, I guess there is quite the plot hole when it comes to the connection b/w teen Han Sooyung and teen Dokja, and there's no real explanation for it.

If that was all there was to the story, I probably would've rated it a 3-4 at this rate. It does some things better than most stories, but that won't make me rate it 5 stars would it? Here's the thing, the reason that I'm rating ORV 5 stars is because of a quality that 95% of other novels or manga/manhwa/manhua like it don't have. It's that feeling of innocence.

Now, this is quite hard to explain and maybe innocence isn't the right word to describe it. Generally, it's better to call it a feeling. Do you know that feeling when you get so into a story that eventually, you may start crying when something bad happens even though you may not even mean to? ORV is like that, and while I will say that reading stories like it (with constellations and apocalypses and systems, that generic stuff) may actually degrade that experience at certain times, it still has that punch that although you may not cry, you will feel pained not because "Oh the MC died, " but because Dokja died, and the other characters are also dying inside as well. The problem I find is that you have to be open to reading the story without thinking too much in the first place, which I find a lot of people having a hard time to do. When I read stories that I know are going to be generic and I see that they are, I'm not going to be invested in the characters and the story because I know what's essentially going to happen. At those times, I'm of course going to be judgmental. But ORV is a story that has to grow with you, and after you get through some horrid beginning and middle parts, you get back to the emotional story that makes ORV so precious to many. I cannot truly emphasize how much the ending truly touched me (with the exception of the epilogue, which was rushed). But I still recommend that you read through the epilogue as it essentially wraps the story despite that. <<less

It's one of the best things I've ever read, and I really wanted to finish it, but around this chapter the translator started messing with the names (literally renaming everyone) and I had no idea what's going on. I haven't read it in like 2 years so they may have fixed it, but it was almost unreadable in that state. Great novel though, highly reccomend.
